Google’s Dusty Gingerbread Still Dominates Android Installs

androidchart

Jelly Bean, the most recent version of Google’s Android operating system, has finally ousted its predecessor, Ice Cream Sandwich, in installed base, but it’s still the second-most-popular version of the OS.

As of May 1, some 28.4 percent of Android devices were running Jelly Bean, slightly more than the 27.5 percent running Ice Cream Sandwich. A welcome and long overdue reversal for Google, which seems to have a lot of trouble transitioning Android users to the most current version of its mobile OS. To wit, Gingerbread, which was released in winter of 2010, and still accounts for the majority of Android installs — 38.5 percent.

Given its recent gains, Jelly Bean will likely overtake Gingerbread in the coming months. But by then, Google will have almost certainly rolled out the next generation of the OS, throwing yet another mile marker in Android users’ upgrade path.
