Viral Video: Russian Dash Cam Samaritans

Dashboard cameras are ubiquitous in Russia due to rampant insurance fraud, which has created an astonishing — and well mined — trove of material on YouTube. Google the phrase “Russian dash cam” and witness car crashes, tank test drives, fist fights and even a plane crash. Much of the footage of the meteor that exploded over central Russia on February 15 was captured by dashboard cameras.

But it’s not all road rage and mayhem. Devour has posted a compilation of the softer side of Russia viewed from the dashboard — strangers lending a hand to fellow drivers, helping seniors and babies out of harm’s way and stopping so cats and other creatures can cross the road safely. Definitely worth watching, even if you have to mute the orchestral soundtrack. (via Kottke)

Just as the atom bomb was the weapon that was supposed to render war obsolete, the Internet seems like capitalism’s ultimate feat of self-destructive genius, an economic doomsday device rendering it impossible for anyone to ever make a profit off anything again. It’s especially hopeless for those whose work is easily digitized and accessed free of charge.
