Square Hires Former Obama Cabinet Member Demetrios Marantis

Commerce startup Square landed another key hire Wednesday, tapping Demetrios J. Marantis to oversee its international and regulatory policy. Marantis, a former member of President Barack Obama’s cabinet, served as the country’s top trade official before making the leap to Square, so he’s particularly well suited for the job of overseeing government and policy work related to the company’s international expansion. Marantis’s hire is Square’s second high-level appointment in as many weeks. Last week, Alex Petrov, a former PayPal exec, signed on as the company’s VP of Partnerships.

It’s especially hopeless for those whose work is easily digitized and accessed free of charge.
