Amazon Unveils $299 “Prime Fresh” Membership as It Expands Grocery Business to Los Angeles
Amazon today acknowledged the expansion of its same-day AmazonFresh grocery delivery business to certain neighborhoods in Los Angeles, making L.A. the first AmazonFresh market outside of Seattle. The L.A. service is available to Amazon Prime members as part of a 90-day trial, the according to the AmazonFresh website.
After that, these Prime members will be upgraded to a new — and steep — $299 “Prime Fresh” membership, which combines access to AmazonFresh with the normal benefits of the Amazon Prime program.
AmazonFresh is the company’s work-in-progress attempt at making a dent in the business of to-your-door grocery delivery. Orders placed in the morning are supposed to arrive at your residence on the same day. Delivery is free for orders over $35. I’m waiting to hear from Amazon on whether all deliveries will be free for Prime Fresh members — no matter the order size — or whether the $35 cutoff will remain.
