Facebook Suffers Site-Wide Downtime for Some

Facebook underwent a period of downtime at approximately 6 pm PT on Tuesday evening, according to multiple reports from users across Twitter.

Several members of the AllThingsD staff — including those on the East and West Coast — reported the inability to access the site from their desktop browsers, as did users claiming the inability to access the site from outside the U.S.

From the browser, navigating to Facebook.com returned a “Sorry, something went wrong” response on a mostly blank Web page. When trying to access the site from an iOS mobile device, I received a “network error” message, with a button prompting me to try loading the page again.

Other users reported the ability to access the site, albeit with very slow page load times.

While Facebook is generally considered very reliable for its sitewide uptime — far from Twitter’s early “fail whale” days — the social giant’s website has experienced some significant periods of downtime in the past. Most notable were Facebook’s issues this past February, when a bug caused many major sites using Facebook plugins to redirect to Facebook.com.

We’ve reached out to Facebook for comment, and will update the post as soon as we receive a response.

Update: At approximately 6:30 pm PT, Facebook seems to be operating normally for many, with some lingering slow loading issues. Facebook PR has yet to return a request for comment.

Update 2: At 8:45 pm PT, a Facebook spokesperson provided AllThingsD with the following statement:

“Earlier today, an internal issue in our web infrastructure caused the site to be slow or unavailable for a brief period of time. We resolved the issue quickly, and should now be back to 100%. We apologize for any inconvenience.”
