Best Buy Announces Nine-Day iPhone Trade-In Deal

Best Buy’s one-day-only iPhone trade-in event earlier this month was so successful that the retailer is doing it again — this time for nine days.

Beginning today, Best Buy is once again offering a $150 trade-in credit for any working iPhone 4 or 4S, enough to cover the cost of a new 16 gigabyte iPhone 5 — after a $50 instant rebate.

Customers hoping to avail themselves of the promotion must be eligible for an upgrade, willing to agree to a standard two-year wireless contract with Verizon, AT&T or Sprint, and ready to foot the bill for any applicable sales tax and carrier activation fees. But otherwise, the deal gets them a “free” iPhone 5.

Best Buy’s rationale for rebooting the promotion? The retailer tells USA Today that the one-day-only iPhone trade-in event it held on June 1 was its biggest day ever for its used electronics trade-in program.

Best Buy’s iPhone deal, which is available in-store only, will run through June 29.

Just as the atom bomb was the weapon that was supposed to render war obsolete, the Internet seems like capitalism’s ultimate feat of self-destructive genius, an economic doomsday device rendering it impossible for anyone to ever make a profit off anything again. It’s especially hopeless for those whose work is easily digitized and accessed free of charge.
