Samsung Plans First Broad-Scale North American Developer Conference for October

Samsung is announcing plans Monday for its largest-yet North American developer conference, a multiday event to take place Oct. 27-29 in San Francisco.

The Korean electronics giant was short on details, saying only that the conference will allow developers to “Engage with industry leaders,” “Collaborate with fellow developers,” “Learn about new Samsung tools and SDKs,” and “Create what’s next.”

While Samsung isn’t saying what’s on tap beyond those hints, a source said it is more about creating ways for developers to create software across Samsung’s many product areas than about signaling a new direction for its mobile efforts.

Registration sign-ups and more details are expected later this summer.

Samsung has been boosting its U.S. presence in a number of ways, expanding its own operations here as well as adding various incubators and accelerators designed to increase the company’s ties to start-ups and other American tech companies.

I think the NSA has a job to do and we need the NSA. But as (physicist) Robert Oppenheimer said, “When you see something that is technically sweet, you go ahead and do it and argue about what to do about it only after you’ve had your technical success. That is the way it was with the atomic bomb.”
