Ankit Jain Departs as Head of Search for Google Play Store

ankitJainAnkit Jain, Google employee of the past three years, left his position as head of Search and Discovery for the Google Play Web store last week.

Before leaving, Jain’s position entailed maintaining the Google Play storefront infrastructure and helping build the search backends for finding apps, music, e-books and movies on the site, according to his LinkedIn profile.

“It’s time to start the next 5 years by giving myself a chance to build something from the ground up,” Jain wrote in a post on his Google+ page. “It’s another unknown journey, but if it’s even half as good as the one I’m about to complete, I know I’ll be a happy man.”

Prior to his time leading search for Google Play, Jain was a senior software engineer at Cuil, a search-engine startup that was shuttered in 2010 after Google “acqhired” the core members of the company’s team (including Jain).

Outside of hinting at creating another small startup, Jain did not specify exactly what he’d be up to next.

Just as the atom bomb was the weapon that was supposed to render war obsolete, the Internet seems like capitalism’s ultimate feat of self-destructive genius, an economic doomsday device rendering it impossible for anyone to ever make a profit off anything again. It’s especially hopeless for those whose work is easily digitized and accessed free of charge.
