Yahoo’s Flickr Gets New Leader From Google — Longtime Mayer Favorite Bernardo Hernández
Yahoo has hired former Google exec Bernardo Hernández González, a longtime favorite of CEO Marissa Mayer when she was at the search company, to lead its Flickr photo-sharing unit. Hernandez, who most recently ran its Zagat property at Google, announced the new job on Twitter. The Spanish entrepreneur joins another Mayer loyalist, Dylan Casey, who came to Yahoo from Path several months ago and had previously also worked at Google.
Sources said Hernández has been at Yahoo for some weeks, but did not have a specific role until now.
That changed after Brett Wayn apparently resigned from that role at Flickr within the last week, after helping lead its dramatic redesign that was much touted publicly by Mayer as part of Yahoo’s new innovation push. It’s not clear why Wayn — who has worked at a range of Internet companies, including AOL and Microsoft — is leaving the company.
Hernández, who has strong online product skills, has an unusual and wide-ranging resume, as both an exec and an investor. He has been an active investor and founder of many Internet companies in Spain, including StepOne, Idealista.com, FloresFrescas.com and 11870.com.
