NBA Refs Wearing Google Glass? “A Great Idea,” Houston Rockets Exec Tells Reddit.

“Okay, Glass, call a foul.”

NBA referees wearing Google Glass? Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey doesn’t think that’s such a crazy idea.

In a Reddit AMA (Ask Me Anything) interview on Friday, a Redditor asked Morey the following: “Do you think Google Glass could ever be integrated into live games, for example by having the officials wear them and letting the TV audience see what they saw?”

If you know anything about Morey, a computer science major and MIT grad whom ESPN’s Bill Simmons has affectionately dubbed “Dork Elvis,” you probably won’t be surprised by his response:

“This is a great idea! Ask Adam Silver,” Morey wrote, speaking of the NBA’s deputy commissioner, who will replace retiring commissioner David Stern in February.

Since snark and sarcasm are commonplace on the Web, I asked Morey on Twitter whether he was serious.

Chances of this happening? If the NBA’s reaction to one of its rookies filming behind-the-scenes footage with Glass at the NBA draft is any indication, not likely. And there’s probably not much good that could come from fans getting a closer look at bad calls by refs.

But if the league thought it would help ratings, that’s a different story.

Here’s the NBA draft video, produced by The Verge.

The problem with the Billionaire Savior phase of the newspaper collapse has always been that billionaires don’t tend to like the kind of authority-questioning journalism that upsets the status quo.
