Salesforce.com and Workday Team Up in the Cloud

Interesting news on the cloud-software front today. Salesforce.com and Workday said they will integrate their platforms in order to enable joint access to their customers.

These two companies share a lot of customers, and often approach them together mainly because they complement one another so well. And the CEOs — Marc Benioff of Salesforce and Aneel Bhusri of Workday — are pretty good friends.

Salesforce is best known for its cloud-based customer-relationship-management applications, around which it has sought to build a huge cloud ecosystem.

Workday has been doing the same thing with human resources software, and recently has been expanding into corporate finance applications and then analytics of all that data on top of that.

Both companies said they’ll standardize on each other’s applications internally, which will also make it easier for customers of one to have access to the other.

The two execs will provide more details in a conference call this afternoon, and at Salesforce’s Dreamforce conference later this year.

Salesforce shares are down slightly in pre-market trading, though they’re up by more than 18 percent this year.

Workday’s shares were up by eight cents, to $78.20 a share. The shares have risen by more than 60 percent since Workday’s debut on the New York Stock Exchange last year.

Just as the atom bomb was the weapon that was supposed to render war obsolete, the Internet seems like capitalism’s ultimate feat of self-destructive genius, an economic doomsday device rendering it impossible for anyone to ever make a profit off anything again. It’s especially hopeless for those whose work is easily digitized and accessed free of charge.
