Apple Surpassing Android With Businesses Writing Custom Mobile Apps

When it comes to supporting mobile devices, businesses tend to allow both iOS and Android devices.

The latest report from Good Technology shows a slight gain sequentially for iOS, which accounted for 72 percent of devices activated in the quarter, with Android-based hardware making up most of the rest of the devices connecting to its server software. On the tablet side, iOS continues to account for nine in 10 device activations.

But, perhaps more importantly, more than 95 percent of custom apps developed by businesses are written for Apple devices. The number of such apps rose more than 42 percent from the prior quarter, as businesses start to incorporate devices more heavily into their workflow.

“We see especially robust internal development activity focused on tablet applications and business transformation,” Good Technology CEO Christy Wyatt said in an email interview. “We are delighted to continue to see amazing growth with a 60 percent increase in device activations year over year, and with this growth comes increased investment in secure mobile app development within our global customers.”

Though iOS grew its share from a quarter ago, that was likely due to the arrival of the new iPhones, as Android has been gaining ground in recent quarters.
