LCD TV Prices Take A Surprising Upward Leap in July

Consumers have gotten used to a steady downward slide in prices of LCD TVs. And with the economy not exactly rosy, there would seem to be plenty of incentive for additional price cuts. But that’s not what happened in July, iSuppli says.

The research firm says the average U.S. retail price for LCD TVs that month jumped 7.2 percent from June–the highest increase in at least a year–after sequential declines the prior two months. The average price of $1,136 was up 2.8 percent from the year-earlier figure.

It’s not that consumers are clamoring for a new television, allowing manufacturers and retailers to raise prices on their inventory of TVs. Far from it.

“Demand has definitely slowed down,” says Riddhi Patel, director of television systems research at iSuppli. “Everybody is worried that they have not been able to move units like they would like.”
