Qualcomm Aims at New Mobile-Chip Segment, Roiling Rivals

Qualcomm is already the biggest player in chips for mobile phones, with annual revenues topping $19 billion. Now it is invading another major chunk of the market, spooking investors in several other companies.

The San Diego-based company is best known for baseband processors, which manage the overall chore of communicating over cellular networks. These are digital chips, handling data in the form of ones and zeros.
