A decade ago, Japan was known as the land of uniquely advanced mobile phones with Internet capabilities and various other features rarely seen elsewhere in the world. But those days are long gone.

The mobile industry’s shift to smartphones has dramatically changed the fate of Japanese handset makers. Most of them have failed to expand their smartphone operations outside of the domestic market, while global brands like Apple Inc. and Samsung Electronics Co. have gained popularity among Japanese smartphone users.
