For Verizon customers, waiting for “the one” — the HTC One, that is — has been an exercise in patience. But the carrier finally announced this morning that HTC’s flagship device will be available on Aug. 22 for $199.99 with a two-year contract.

Introduced in February, the HTC One offers a 4.7-inch 1080p HD touchscreen, 4G LTE support and a quad-core processor. It also features HTC’s UltraPixel camera technology and software.

The smartphone has been lauded by tech reviewers and customers alike for its high-quality construction and solid performance.

But with the delayed release on Verizon, HTC One is facing a lot more competition than when it launched five months ago on AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint.

The new Motorola Droid Ultra and Maxx are set to go on sale two days before the HTC One, while the Droid Mini will follow on Aug. 29. The Motorola X and LG G2 are also coming. Plus, we’re likely to see the new iPhone make its debut on Sept. 10.

Whether those who have been waiting for the Verizon HTC One will stay the course or jump ship to another device remains to be seen. But the HTC One has helped the struggling Taiwanese phone manufacturer regain some lost ground. HTC said that the One is its most successful product launch to date.

Still, HTC has a way to go to catch up to the likes of Samsung and Apple. Most recently, the company signed actor Robert Downey Jr. to star in a new campaign. HTC also plans to release a midrange set of phones later this year.
