Apple’s Domestic Mac Sales Slip ’N Slide in September Quarter

The summer doldrums aren’t yet over for Apple’s Mac.

According to new market data from NPD Group, domestic Mac sales were flat year over year during July — the first month of Apple’s September quarter. Based on this early indication, Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster — who shared NPD’s numbers in a Monday research note — expects September-quarter Mac sales to be down five percent year over year.

Hardly a surprise: Apple’s domestic Mac sales slipped five percent year over year in the June quarter, as well. And they fell 12 percent year over year for the month of June alone, despite the introduction of new MacBook Airs based on Intel’s Haswell processors that same month.

Clearly, Apple, too, is suffering a bit from the overall PC market, which is currently down, and has been for some time. Another factor likely weighing on Mac sales: Consumers in the market for other Macs in Apple’s portfolio — Mac Pro, iMac, etc. — holding off on making purchases until those machines are updated (or in the case of the Mac Pro, actually released).

But the bigger picture here, as Munster notes, is that the Mac, while a core piece of Apple’s business, is becoming an increasingly smaller one, whittled down by shifting consumer interest and iPad cannibalization. Indeed, the analyst predicts that by 2014 the Mac will account for just 11 percent of Apple’s business, slipping to nine percent by 2015.
