Barry Owen
Associate Editor
Barry R. Owen started his editorial career in San Francisco as a freelance proofreader for a periodical called PC Magazine in the early 1980s. After Ziff-Davis purchased it, he moved to New York to become managing editor and then executive editor. Returning to California in 1989, he wrote "Personal Computers for the Computer Illiterate," published by Harper-Collins in 1991.
Since then, he has worked mostly as an independent editorial management consultant, overseeing both print and Web launches and other projects for Ziff, IDG, Apple, Microsoft, and a variety of other clients.
Periodically returning to staff roles, Mr. Owen has also been creative director for Fluent Communications, a custom-publishing company in Seattle, and a vice president of content for MarketMakers.com.
Mr. Owen graduated from the University of California at Davis, with a degree in English.
Ethics Statement
Here is a statement of my ethics and coverage policies. It is more than most of you want to know, but, in the age of suspicion of the media, I am laying it all out.
The greatest potential conflict of interest, if not the only one, related in working for a Web site that covers digital technology is ownership of stocks or other interests whose value might be enhanced or otherwise affected by what appears on the site. I do not own, either overtly or blindly, any technology stocks related to personal computers, digital technology, the Internet or media of any kind.
With my brothers, I do own a fractional interest in mineral rights to fossil fuel-producing properties in Texas that yield periodic royalties. The wells on these properties are owned and managed by Pioneer Natural Resources, a global company based in Midland, Texas.
Beyond the issues discussed here, I also abide by the Dow Jones Code of Conduct, which can be found here.
