<p>Today, <a href="http://www.businessweek.com">Bloomberg Businessweek</a> is releasing <a href="http://www.businessweek.com/reports/lifestyle/the-second-annual-how-to-issue">its second &#8220;How To&#8221; issue</a>, in which the magazine asked over 60 well-known people how to handle &#8220;real world problems big and small &#8230; from how to make coffee at home to how to save Greece, and even tell readers how to buy a supertanker and a dinosaur.&#8221;</p>
<p><em>Okey doke!</em></p>
<p>My favorite is one from Carol Bartz, titled <a href="http://www.businessweek.com/articles/2012-04-12/how-to-speak-your-mind-carol-bartz">&#8220;How to Speak Your Mind,&#8221;</a> which made me dearly miss the mind-speaking stylings of the ousted Yahoo CEO. Well known for her ability to toss off a curse like it was breathing, she knows of what she speaks.</p>
<p>&#8220;Agreeing is easy,&#8221; she says. &#8220;Disagreeing takes more guts.&#8221;</p>
<p>Word. (That&#8217;s her above giving me the business at our <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20090616/yahoo-ceo-carol-bartz-the-full-d7-session-unexpurgated-2/">seventh <strong>D: All Things Digital</strong> conference in 2009</a>.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s her priceless advice on the subject:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>If you&#8217;re going to be a straight talker, you have to believe that it&#8217;s a virtue, that it&#8217;s an attribute you want associated with yourself. If you have an opinion and you just state it, it allows the other person to either try to change your opinion, to agree with you, or to agree to disagree &#8212; they have an action they can take. If you are quiet, people think you agree. How can you then further the conversation when you&#8217;re at different points and it&#8217;s not really exposed? Agreeing is easy. Disagreeing takes more guts. Several years back, when I was CEO at Autodesk, there was a very senior-level woman who was very smart and well-spoken, but she did not wear appropriate clothes. It was distracting and she was not being taken seriously. I said to her manager, who was male, &#8220;You need to tell her.&#8221; He said, &#8220;Oh, no way.&#8221; So I called her in and frankly stated what I thought was happening. I told her, &#8220;You&#8217;re not getting the respect you deserve.&#8221; I said, &#8220;Go to Nordstrom&#8217;s and get a personal shopper. Just say, &#8216;I&#8217;m a senior businessperson and need help dressing like one.&#8217;&#8221; She came back, and honest to God, it was a different person. She said she felt really good. And her currency went way up. Early in my business career, if people asked me a question, I&#8217;d try to answer it honestly. And that was rewarded. I had managers who wanted me around because I would actually tell them what was happening. I was raised by my gram, and she was a pretty straight talker because she thought you could handle it. My advice is, dip your toe in. If you&#8217;re honest and truthful, what is somebody going to say, that you&#8217;re stupid because you believe something? Being honest and truthful is part of being a good friend, a good associate, and a good leader. It&#8217;s also why I know I could never be a politician.</p></blockquote>

<p>Dag Kittlaus &#8212; the co-founder and CEO of the company that created the Siri voice control feature, which Apple launched to <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111011/the-iphone-finds-its-voice/">much acclaim</a> recently &#8212; has left the company, according to sources.</p>
<p>There were several reasons for the departure, which was amicable and has been planned for a while, sources said. They included Kittlaus&#8217;s family being in Chicago, a desire to take time off and an interest in brainstorming new entrepreneurial ideas.</p>
<p>Kittlaus has led the speech recognition efforts for Apple since <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20100428/apple-snags-siri/">Apple bought Siri in April of 2010</a>. He had been Siri&#8217;s CEO since 2007. Before that, the Norwegian-born Kittlaus was an Entrepreneur in Residence at the Stanford Research Institute and had also worked at Motorola.</p>
<p>Kittlaus apparently left just after the launch of the iPhone 4S, in which Siri&#8217;s speech recognition technology was the highlight, but sources said other key execs from Siri are expected to remain at Apple.</p>
<p>I have queried Apple PR and am waiting for a response.</p>

<p>Given all that has happened to the once promising Palm mobile platform this week, via the <em>strategery</em> machinating of its current owner Hewlett-Packard, it is long past time for a good laugh.</p>
<p>Ergo, Silicon Valley venture capitalist and pundit Roger McNamee, who always provides. </p>
<p>(He&#8217;s shown in the above photo pointing out the most excellent lady feature &#8212; a mirror, cuz us gals like to take a gander at our lipstick now and again &#8212; of the Palm Pre).</p>
<p>Mirror notwithstanding, here is the <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20090528/d7-video-jon-and-roger-market-the-palm-pre/">spoof video</a> done by McNamee and former Palm CEO Jon Rubinstein, which was shown before their introduction to the stage at the seventh <strong>D: All Things Digital</strong> conference in 2009.</p>

<p>In it, they are trying to figure out the right marketing message for the new Palm Pre, hindered only by <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20090310/palm-put-a-sock-in-it-mcnamee/">McNamee&#8217;s penchant for telling tall tales</a> about technology.</p>
<p>It is very, very funny and but a wee taste of a time of hope for the innovative mobile operating system. As everyone knows now, HP kicked Palm&#8217;s webOS to the curb earlier this week.</p>
<p>Along with the mock commercial &#8212; which remains better than Palm ever did seriously &#8212; is the <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20090710/elevation-partners-managing-director-roger-mcnamee-and-palm-chairman-and-ceo-jon-rubenstein-the-full-d7-session/">full video of the interview</a> the pair gave at <strong>D7</strong> and also <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20100108/rubinstein/">Rubinstein&#8217;s solo stage</a> appearance at <strong>D@CES</strong> in early 2010, in which he talks about <em>not</em> using an Apple iPhone. </p>

<p>When Microsoft introduced its refurbished search service called Bing two years ago&#8211;at the seventh <strong>D: All Things Digital</strong> conference, in fact&#8211;there were a lot of raised eyebrows about whether it could make any headway into a market in which it was a mere pip-squeak.</p>
<p>And, while it has been a costly effort, few can dispute the fact that the innovative, interesting and cleverly marketed Bing is a perceptual and perhaps even actual hit for the software giant.</p>
<p>Now, can Microsoft (MSFT) do the same with <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20101011/live-from-new-york-windows-phone-7-launch/">Windows Phone 7, which was launched yesterday</a>?</p>
<p>It will be an interesting effort to watch, given how indisputably late Microsoft has been to the smartphone party now dominated by offerings from Google&#8217;s (GOOG) Android and Apple&#8217;s (AAPL) iPhone.</p>
<p>BoomTown is no reviewer, nor have I spent a lot of time using the Windows Phone 7.</p>
<p>That said, it seems to have been born in the same green-field spirit of Bing and looks like a welcome entrant into the arena.</p>
<p>And I love the whole cool font thing.</p>

<p>That&#8217;s the same way I felt about Bing when it was released, especially since the idea of Google dominating search so completely and dictating change is a prospect I relish about as much I do the idea of living in a small South American banana republic.</p>
<p>Which is to say, not at all.</p>
<p>So, bring on the much-needed competition, even it comes from a company that invented, patented and was sued silly due to the concept of monopolistic domination in tech.</p>
<p>And, for all the daily slog of it, Microsoft&#8217;s Bing has been a bright spot in tech and for the company.</p>
<p>The service, which was built from scratch, has improved market share, added a plethora of worthy features and has even made Google sweat a little bit and work a little harder.</p>
<p>And now, due to a search technology and online advertising partnership with Yahoo (YHOO), Microsoft is poised to make some significant headway in its efforts to get into a strong No. 2 spot that could eventually give it the scale and size needed to make some bank.</p>
<p>Of course, the battle in the market for smartphones is even more uphill and difficult to pull off.</p>
<p>Microsoft needs developers to make apps, has to keep innovating on features and cannot acquiesce to wireless carriers, even as it must also get their cooperation for distribution.</p>

<p>And, of course, it has to convince consumers to switch, which is no easy task, and to feel the need for new phones to replace their recently new phones.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s a good thing then that <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20101011/windows-phone-7-launch/">Windows Phone 7 looks like Microsoft has at least anted up table stakes to play</a>, delivering a phone that looks pretty good at first glance, much the same way I felt when I saw Bing for the first time.</p>
<p>&#8220;Microsoft did <em>that</em>? It&#8217;s so pretty,&#8221; I said to a long-suffering company exec when I got a demo. &#8220;It&#8217;s actually <em>good</em> good and not just Microsoft good.&#8221;</p>
<p>That was actually a compliment&#8211;one I hope to be able to pay again soon.</p>

<p>Cuban&#8211;who is always up to some kind of amusing stunt (for example, see <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20070828/mark-cuban-already-knows-how-to-tap-dance">his dance stylings on &#8220;Dancing With the Stars&#8221;</a> in 2007)&#8211;actually has already been in two episodes on the premium cable television service and it looks like he will also make the finale.</p>
<p>The story line has Cuban vying to nab a tequila company in Mexico out from under the nose of a very befuddled Turtle.</p>

<p>&#8220;We’ve been working hard to bring the world’s first product based on plastic electronics technology to market&#8211;and have decided that delaying the device a bit longer will result in a better product for you,&#8221; Plastic Logic CEO Richard Archuleta said in a message to pre-order customers. &#8220;With that in mind, we need to let you know that since your unit will not ship on June 24 as planned, our automated ordering system has automatically cancelled your order.&#8221;</p>
<p>Archuleta didn’t specify a new ship date, which was probably wise since the Que has now missed <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20100406/you-still-cant-buy-plastic-logics-que-e-reader-want-to-buy-plastic-logic/">two of them</a>. Nor did he offer any detail on the company’s rationale for further delaying the product. </p>
<p>A spokesperson for Plastic Logic, however, insists the company is simply refining it. &#8220;The market for e-readers is changing rapidly, and they want to make sure that the product they deliver is the right one for their target business customers,&#8221; she said. &#8220;They continue to refine the product, technology and features.&#8221;</p>
<p>Let&#8217;s hope they continue to refine the price as well. At $650 and $800, the Que seemed a bit pricey for a standalone e-reader, even one targeted at enterprise. Now, with Apple’s (AAPL) iPad redefining user expectations for multipurpose e-readers and <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20100621/its-an-e-reader-price-war-amazon-trumps-barnes-noble-with-189-kindle/">Amazon (AMZN) and Barnes &#038; Noble (BKS) dropping prices on the Kindle and Nook</a> to well below $200, Plastic Logic seems to be pricing itself out of a market it hasn’t even managed to enter yet.</p>

<p>The controversy around minerals from the war-torn Democratic Republic of Congo that are used in a variety of popular consumer tech devices seems to be getting another round of much needed attention.</p>
<p>New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof, for example, penned a piece titled <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2010/06/27/opinion/27kristof.html">&#8220;Death by Gadget&#8221;</a> this past weekend, with the opening line: &#8220;&#8216;Blood diamonds&#8217; have faded away, but we may now be carrying &#8216;blood phones.&#8217;&#8221;</p>
<p>The article was prompted by new grass-roots efforts by activists to revive the issue, including the new video below, titled: &#8220;I&#8217;m a Mac&#8230;and I&#8217;ve Got a Dirty Little Secret.&#8221;</p>
<p>The goal: To get big tech companies&#8211;such as Apple (AAPL) and Intel (INTC)&#8211;to promise to monitor the sourcing of the minerals they use in their devices, such as smartphones.</p>

<p>John Lilly, the well-regarded CEO of Mozilla, is preparing to give up his post at the open-source software nonprofit foundation, which is also a for-profit start-up.</p>

<p>Lilly (pictured here) is moving to Greylock Partners as a venture partner, sources added, although the affable entrepreneur could eventually end up doing a start-up.</p>
<p>In a post on his personal blog about the <a href="http://john.jubjubs.net/2010/05/11/whats-next-for-me-but-not-yet/">change</a>, Lilly said:</p>
<p>&#8220;Venture investing is what I’ve wanted to do for quite a long time&#8211;I&#8217;ve been involved in many startups, even building an incubator a decade ago, and have interests that span enterprise, open source, and the broader web, among others. I&#8217;m incredibly excited to join an amazing team there, and the firm that I&#8217;ve noted to be incredibly strongly oriented towards entrepreneurs&#8211;it really matches my sensibilities as an operator quite well.&#8221;</p>
<p>Lilly became CEO of Mozilla in early 2008, after serving as its COO. <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080730/mozillas-john-lilly-speaks">He took over</a> from Mitchell Baker, who remained the company&#8217;s chairman.</p>
<p>A search is on to find Lilly&#8217;s replacement in what will be gradual transition that will last many months. Lilly will stay involved at Mozilla and continue to serve on its board of directors.</p>
<p>While Mozilla makes a number of products, it is best known for its Firefox browser, whose share has steadily increased since it debuted in late 2004.</p>
<p>According to a <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20100504/internet-explorers-market-share-melting/">recent survey</a>, Firefox had a 24.6 percent share, well up from its 11 percent share in 2006.</p>
<p>Microsoft&#8217;s (MSFT) Internet Explorer still holds the lead place in software to navigate the Web with a share that just dipped below 60 percent. The Chrome browser from Google (GOOG) is in a distant third place.</p>
<p>Mozilla just announced that it will ship a beta of Firefox 4 next month, with a finished version coming out in November. The new version is slated to have a slicker interface and speed improvements.</p>
<p>By dislodging Internet Explorer from its dominant market position, Firefox has proved not only that open-source projects can provide better software but that it&#8217;s possible for a particularly well done one to become an everyday consumer application.</p>
<p>Despite its success, Mozilla still has to keep up its innovation and technical prowess. But given its unusual status as both a profit and nonprofit, it is hindered in that it is not likely to go public and shower its Silicon Valley employees with giant gobs of overhyped stock.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s Lilly&#8217;s email to Mozilla staff</a> (he also has a <a href="http://john.jubjubs.net/">post on his own Web site</a>):</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>Everyone,</p>
<p>As my five year anniversary at Mozilla approaches, I&#8217;ve decided that it&#8217;s time for me to move on to my next role sometime later this year. This won&#8217;t happen today or tomorrow&#8211;I expect to be here and working for several months yet, and I&#8217;m planning to stay on the Board of Directors.</p>
<p>This is a tough note for me to write&#8211;I feel so incredibly lucky and humbled to have worked on such an amazing project, with such spectacular people, for the last few years.</p>
<p>But I&#8217;ve always been a startup guy at heart&#8211;Mozilla was originally going to be a quick volunteer effort for me, but quickly turned into a full time job, and at the beginning of 2008 turned into the CEO job that I have now. I&#8217;ve really been missing working with startups, and want to learn how to invest in and build great new startups, so am planning to join Greylock Partners as a Venture Partner once we transition here.</p>
<p>I&#8217;m in no rush, and the most important thing to me is to build the strongest Mozilla we can, with the best leadership possible. So my plan is to stay through that transition&#8211;we&#8217;re starting a CEO search now, and plan to do it in as transparent a way as possible&#8211;which means I&#8217;ll continue in my CEO role as normal for several more months, at least.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ll have more to say on the transition as we figure things out more clearly, but for now, business as usual. We&#8217;ve got Firefox 4 to ship, and Firefox on multiple mobile platforms. We&#8217;ve got our web services like Weave to stand up and make available to millions of users.</p>
<p>For now, though, I really want to communicate a deep gratitude to each of you&#8211;over the past few years we&#8217;ve done an amazing amount together, and changed the world in so many meaningful ways. 400 million users are directly touched every day by the work we&#8217;ve done so far, and many, many more are using better browsers because of our work. There are many more contributions and victories to come.</p>

<p>Last week, BoomTown was in Washington, D.C., my old stomping grounds for 15 years, from attending Georgetown University as an undergraduate to covering the beginnings of the Internet at the Washington Post.</p>
<p>I miss a lot of things about living there, but most definitely not the poisonous political partisanship that you get sucked into from the minute you arrive.</p>
<p>Most recently, for example, it was ugly battles over financial reform, some tough remarks by President Barack Obama toward the GOP and&#8211;I swear&#8211;the &#8220;controversy&#8221; over some airbrushing of House Majority Leader Nancy Pelosi on a magazine cover.</p>
<p>In other words, it does not take much for the denizens there to descend into the mud-slinging swamp the city was built on.</p>
<p>But it&#8217;s almost a relief to be in D.C. rather than in California, given how increasingly hostile the atmosphere is getting as a range of companies wrestle over a range of issues both key and trivial.</p>
<p>The hostilities especially center on the three main powers of Silicon Valley today: Google (GOOG), Apple (AAPL) and Facebook.</p>
<p>And, specifically, the conflicts include Apple versus Google and Adobe (ADBE) and HTC and the First Amendment; Google versus Apple and Facebook and Microsoft (MSFT) and the Federal Trade Commission and&#8211;oh, yes&#8211;China; and Facebook versus Google and Twitter and anyone who gets in the way of its Manifest Destiny of Like-buttoning the Web.</p>
<p>Even Yahoo (YHOO) is entering the fray, with <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100430/yahoo-ceo-trash-talks-web-rivals-but-that-wont-stop-the-companys-troubling-brain-drain">CEO Carol Bartz taking please-don&#8217;t-forget-us shots</a> at Google and Facebook recently.</p>
<p>The Apple shooting match with Adobe over its Flash video technology is perhaps the most riveting, especially because it is the computer giant&#8217;s CEO, Steve Jobs, personally and relentlessly conducting the assault.</p>
<p>Jobs called <a href="http://www.apple.com/hotnews/thoughts-on-flash/">Adobe technology shoddy</a>, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100411/exclusive-video-adobe-cto-lynch-smacks-back-at-apples-protectionist-strategy-calling-it-bad-for-consumers-but-hell-swing-chickens-if-forced">Adobe execs called Jobs controlling</a>, the blogosphere erupted.</p>

<p>While issues around the use of Flash are a lot more complex, of course, they illustrate just how much the digital sector is at a critical inflection point.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s especially true as the game moves from the laptop/desktop, Web-centric world to one more social, mobile and focused on innovative new devices, such as smartphones and tablets.</p>
<p>This means the potential for a shift in power, obviously&#8211;which, in turn, means more wrangling among and between the digital powers-that-be.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s the top of mind as the next <strong>D: All Things Digital</strong> conference approaches in less than a month. In our eighth foray out, there have never been more overt power struggles among the various players who will be onstage.</p>
<p>Last year, in our opening essay for <strong>D7</strong>, titled <a href="http://d7.allthingsd.com/20090526/welcome-to-web-30">&#8220;Welcome to Web 3.0,&#8221;</a> we made a prediction.</p>
<p>&#8220;So what&#8217;s the seminal development that&#8217;s ushering in the era of Web 3.0? It’s the real arrival, after years of false predictions, of the thin client, running clean, simple software, against cloud-based data and services,&#8221; we wrote, specifically referencing the growing popularity of Apple’s iPod and iPhone as the harbingers of this important trend.</p>
<p>We continued: &#8220;But this is not just about one company, one platform or even one form factor. No, this new phenomenon is about handheld computers from many companies, with software platforms and distribution mechanisms tightly tied to cloud-based services, whether they are multi-player games, e-commerce offerings or corporate databases.&#8221;</p>
<p>Looking back over the last year, we think we got it pretty right, as companies of all kinds and in all arenas raced to be part of the social, mobile, cloud-centered action.</p>
<p>This fusion and, really, collision of key trends will be at the heart of what we’ll be focusing on at <strong>D8</strong> as the major companies in tech and media try to figure out how consumers want to conduct their digital lives going forward and with what devices.</p>
<p>And inevitably, that has begun to cause some major rifts among and between the powers that be throughout tech and media. It’s clear to us that a major realignment of consumer expectations and desires is taking place, along with a fundamental shift in how we all relate to computing.</p>
<p>Still, with all the changes, it&#8217;s important to keep a respectful tone, which seems to have gotten a bit lost of late, especially now when every tiny shift and disagreement enters the digital echo chamber and quickly moves from loud to strident.</p>
<p>Such noise inevitably makes the whole competitive necessity of Silicon Valley&#8211;which is one of its greatest assets, of course&#8211;seem tinny and small, much like what you hear out of Washington all the time.</p>
<p>One of the reasons I moved out West  was that it always seemed that&#8211;whatever the rivalry or wrangling&#8211;Silicon Valley was much better than that.</p>
<p>So even though healthy and robust competition is what makes it all work in tech, as Sergeant Esterhaus of &#8220;Hill Street Blues&#8221; used to say in the trademark phrase, which you can see in this video, &#8220;Let&#8217;s be careful out there&#8221;:</p>

<p>After an <strong>All Things Digital</strong> report last week on Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) being the most likely suitor for Palm (PALM)&#8211;despite multiple reports of intense interest from HTC and Lenovo from China&#8211;CEO Jon Rubinstein jokingly asked how we knew about the deal.</p>
<p>We didn&#8217;t! <em>It was a complete guess, Ruby!</em></p>
<p>Actually it was a <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20100423/palm-hp">very informed one by Digital Daily&#8217;s John Paczkowski</a>, but his cogent analysis of the synergies between Palm and HP is pretty much what Rubinstein said drove the action.</p>
<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve got great intellectual property with webOS and a great team assembled,&#8221; he said, in an interview with BoomTown this afternoon after the <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20100428/palm-folds-goes-to-hp-for-1-2-billion/">$1.2 billion acquisition was announced</a>. &#8220;HP is the largest tech company in the world and they are now going to invest in driving it to scale, which we could not do at Palm.&#8221;</p>
<p>Getting its innovative webOS mobile operating system software to scale&#8211;or, more precisely not being able to at its size&#8211;was one of the major issues that Rubinstein pointed to in doing the deal (and, it goes without saying, Palm&#8217;s struggles).</p>
<p>&#8220;This industry became much more competitive very quickly than we had hoped or could have predicted,&#8221; he said, referring to the giant investments in the space by Google (GOOG) with Android, Apple (AAPL) with the iPhone and even Microsoft (MSFT) with its new Windows Phone 7. &#8220;We did predict the right marketplace and thought the smartphone market was going to explode, so it was the right direction.&#8221;</p>
<p>Now it will be up to HP to drive Web OS, although Rubinstein said he expects most of the team at Palm&#8211;including himself&#8211;to move over intact.</p>
<p>Rubinstein, who once worked at HP, said more details over who the rivals to nab Palm were will be revealed when regulatory documents are released, although he declined to comment specifically now. Now, it is up to him and HP to <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20100428/live-hp-pitches-the-1-2-billion-palm-deal/">sell it to Wall Street</a>.</p>
<p>He said he expected the deal &#8220;should not attract significant&#8221; government scrutiny, given the high amount of competition in the space.</p>
<p>Which he predicted would be heightened now that HP is backing Palm as its new owner, rather than struggling on its own, as it has been.</p>
<p>&#8220;Certainly from a tech point of view, the ability to compete is now profound,&#8221; he said. &#8220;I think this is a logical and natural match and the synergies are obvious.&#8221;</p>
<p>As to missteps, such as its <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20091112/creepy-lady-thankfully-absent-from-new-palm-commercials/">creepy lady advertising</a> and questionable marketing, Rubinstein said no CEO likes to focus on those.</p>
<p>Which is why when I asked him about the silly exchange I had with Silicon Valley VC and Palm backer Roger McNamee about last year&#8217;s <strong>D: All Things Digital</strong> conference about the mirror on the back of the Palm Pre that the &#8220;ladies&#8221; would love, he joked that&#8212;even though McNamee was now out&#8211;the overly loquacious Elevation Partners investor would be brought back from time to time to liven things up.</p>
<p>As to Rubinstein&#8217;s own controversial quote to me in an onstage interview at a <strong>D</strong> event at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in January, where the former Apple exec said <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20100108/rubinstein">he had never used an iPhone</a>, he quipped: &#8220;I still haven&#8217;t touched one.&#8221;</p>
<p>In truth, Palm never really did.</p>

<p>With rumors flying hither and yon about the sale of Palm&#8211;likely to an Asian company, such as HTC or Lenovo&#8211;BoomTown is getting all misty for those days of hope that the little innovative smartphone pioneer might actually prevail against the giants.</p>
<p>Not for the creepy lady in the advertising for the Pre, mind you, but everything else.</p>
<p>Thus, here are three videos in which the dream was still alive at Palm (PALM).</p>
<p>The first, below, is an interview BoomTown did with <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090112/kara-talks-to-roger-mcnamee-about-the-palm-pre">Elevation Partners&#8217; Roger McNamee</a>, who sank $425 million into Palm and talks about the sky-high prospects for the company at the 2009 Consumer Electronics Show, where Palm was the belle of the geeks.</p>

<p>The second is from the seventh <strong>D: All Things Digital</strong> conference, where <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090710/elevation-partners-managing-director-roger-mcnamee-and-palm-chairman-and-ceo-jon-rubenstein-the-full-d7-session">McNamee and Palm CEO Jon Rubinstein appeared</a> in June 2009 to talk up the launch of the device.</p>
<p>In it, McNamee pooh-poohed the idea that Apple (AAPL) would care about the Palm Pre mimicking an iPhone in iTunes (which Apple did care about <em>a lot</em>) and had a delightful cat fight with me about the mirror on the phone for the &#8220;ladies.&#8221; It begins with a mock video Rubinstein and McNamee made for <strong>D7</strong> in which they make fun of McNamee&#8217;s proclivity for telling tall tales about the Pre.</p>

<p>The long-running telenovela that has been MySpace over the years took yet another dramatic turn late today when News Corp. Chief Digital Officer Jon Miller fired MySpace CEO Owen Van Natta, whom he had hired only nine months ago to turn around the troubled social networking site, according to several sources.</p>
<p>(The pair are pictured above in happier times, with Van Natta on the left, during an interview Walt Mossberg and I did with them at the seventh <strong>D: All Things Digital</strong> conference in May. You can see the full video below.)</p>
<p>While <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20100210/that-was-fast-owen-van-natta-out-at-myspace/">News Corp. tried to paint the departure</a> as more mutual in its official statement, it was most definitely not, as problems among top execs finally came to a head today.</p>

<p>Among the issues were tensions between Miller and Van Natta, as well as growing tensions with his top two execs, COO Mike Jones and Chief Product Officer Jason Hirschhorn.</p>
<p>Miller hired Van Natta, but the CEO didn&#8217;t bring in the two executives directly beneath him: Both Jones and Hirschhorn were hired by Miller, along with News Corp. (NWS) CEO Rupert Murdoch, who signed off on both men.</p>
<p>Sources also noted that Van Natta, a former Facebook and Amazon (AMZN) exec, had begun to bridle at not being able to select his own execs and at increasing meddling in the MySpace turnaround by Miller.</p>
<p>&#8220;There were three senior thinkers put in place to fix MySpace and it became clear that not all those voices were needed anymore,&#8221; said one person close to the situation. &#8220;So, Owen was the odd man out.&#8221;</p>
<p>And out he went in a flash, with Miller flying to Los Angeles early in the week to deal with rumors that it was Hirschhorn who was on his way out.</p>
<p>In fact, the well-known media exec had been vocally complaining for months about the harder-than-expected struggle to right MySpace&#8217;s once innovative business and had told many he was contemplating leaving within the next few months.</p>
<p>Today, several sources said, he conducted an all-day review of the plans Van Natta, Jones and Hirschhorn had been working on to revive MySpace and morph it into an entertainment and music hub.</p>
<p>After it was over, multiple sources said, Miller met with Van Natta and told him his tenure at CEO was over.</p>
<p>The move came as a shock to the staff at MySpace, as it was not expected, although it was clear that top execs at News Corp. were aware of the decision made by Miller.</p>
<p>&#8220;Simply put, it was a power struggle and Jon won,&#8221; said one source.</p>
<p>Miller has not returned my emails or phone calls about the situation, and a News Corp. spokeswoman declined to comment.</p>
<p>Ironically, after fixing a range of technical and product issues over the last several months, MySpace was beginning to see stabilization in the bleeding of users.</p>
<p>Comparatively, rival Facebook has seen explosive growth, reaching 400 million global users this week.</p>

<p>While many thought it would not sail through regulatory scrutiny easily, and it has taken a year, the merger of two entertainment industry giants&#8211;Ticketmaster and Live Nation&#8211;can go forward as long as a certain set of conditions is met, the Department of Justice said.</p>
<p>And while DOJ&#8217;s antitrust head, Christine Varney, told reporters today that she warned the two companies that the federal government was prepared to litigate if necessary, it&#8211;<em>well</em>&#8211;did not.</p>
<p>“We concluded the transaction as originally proposed was anti-competitive,” said Varney, a statement that was pretty much negated by her decision not to block the merger, given that the conditions she set were not a stretch for the parties to meet.</p>
<p>Still, Varney noted: &#8220;The proposed settlement allows for strong competitors to Ticketmaster, allowing concert venues to have more and better choices for their ticketing needs, and provides for anti-retaliation provisions, which will keep the merged company in check.&#8221;</p>
<p>We shall see about that&#8211;many are expecting even higher ticket prices and &#8220;fees.&#8221;</p>
<p>The companies also reached an agreement with 17 State Attorneys General as part of the U.S. consent decree, as well as with the Canadian Commissioner of Competition.</p>
<p>Not surprisingly, shares of both West Hollywood-based Ticketmaster (TKTM) and Live Nation (LYV) of Beverly Hills, Calif., were up about 15 percent today, even though the deal still has to undergo public comment and be approved by a judge.</p>
<p>But after today, Ticketmaster investors will get Live Nation stock, valued at $15.49, and with its ticker retired, Ticketmaster shares will no longer trade.</p>
<p>Now the combined company will be able to do everything from selling tickets to booking artists to selling their T-shirts and more.</p>
<p>And all Live Nation and Ticketmaster have to do to operate like this is sell off a college sports ticketing unit to Comcast (CMCSA) and license ticketing software to Live Nation&#8217;s nearest competitor, the Anschutz Entertainment Group.</p>
<p>Also, for a decade, the merged company cannot play dirty, blackballing those who decide they don&#8217;t want to use its services.</p>
<p>With 75 big venues across the U.S. under the purview of Live Nation, that&#8217;s a lot of places the world&#8217;s largest concert promoter could apply pressure.</p>
<p>And because Ticketmaster is the dominant player in ticketing for sports and entertainment events, as well as the manager of a spate of major acts that play at those Live Nation venues, it&#8217;s clear you have a very powerful entity.</p>
<p>It will all be led, in part, by Ticketmaster CEO Irving Azoff, who can be seen below in an <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090612/ticketmaster-ceo-irving-azoff-the-full-d7-interview">interview with BoomTown</a> at the seventh <strong>D: All Things Digital</strong> conference last May.</p>
<p>One of the most influential behind-the-scenes movers and shakers in the music industry for a long time now, Azoff talked about with me about the merger and digital forces buffeting the entertainment business.</p>
<p>Azoff will be the executive chairman of the merged company, which will be called Live Nation Entertainment, as well as CEO of Front Line artist management. Longtime Hollywood and Internet mogul Barry Diller is set to be chairman, and Michael Rapino will be CEO and president.</p>

<blockquote class="memo"><p>LOS ANGELES and WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif., Jan 25, 2010&#8211;Live Nation, Inc. and Ticketmaster Entertainment, Inc. today announced that they have reached agreements with the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) and with the Canadian Commissioner of Competition, clearing the way for the merger of the companies. Upon closing, the company will be renamed Live Nation Entertainment, Inc. to reflect the combination of Live Nation&#8217;s concert promotions expertise with Ticketmaster&#8217;s world-class ticketing solutions and artist relationships.</p>
<p>Under the terms of the proposed final judgment filed today in U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, the companies have agreed to divest Ticketmaster&#8217;s self-ticketing subsidiary, Paciolan, to Comcast-Spectacor and to license the Ticketmaster Host technology to Anschutz Entertainment Group, Inc., as well as to other terms that protect competitive conditions in ticketing and promotions. Seventeen State Attorneys General also participated in the matter and have joined in the U.S. consent decree. The parties&#8217; consent agreement with the Canadian Commissioner of Competition is on substantially equivalent terms.</p>
<p>As previously announced, in connection with the merger, each issued and outstanding share of Ticketmaster common stock will be cancelled and converted into the right to receive a number of shares of Live Nation common stock such that Ticketmaster stockholders will receive approximately 50.01% of the voting power of the combined company. Subject to final confirmation, the companies expect each share of Ticketmaster common stock to be cancelled and converted into the right to receive 1.474 shares of Live Nation common stock in connection with the merger and for Live Nation to issue approximately 84,613,661 shares of Live Nation common stock to Ticketmaster stockholders in the aggregate.</p>
<p>The combined company will be led by Michael Rapino as CEO and President of Live Nation Entertainment and Irving Azoff as Executive Chairman of Live Nation Entertainment and CEO of Front Line. Barry Diller will serve as Chairman of the Board of Live Nation Entertainment. The Board will consist of 14 directors, seven from each company.</p></blockquote>

<p>But BoomTown was swanning around the Sundance Film Festival in Utah this weekend, went partying with those boozy Hollywood types and ended up in Provo with the crazy gals from &#8220;The Runaways&#8221;!</p>
<p>I <em>wish</em>! Actually, running away from issuing any grade for deal-making for Bartz is a pretty good way to put it.</p>
<p>Because today, after much thought, I have to give the Yahoo leader an incomplete for deal-making.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s because the only deal that truly counts&#8211;the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090729/microhoo-deal-finally-official-its-the-lite-version-but-is-it-still-tasty">search and online advertising partnership</a> with Microsoft (MSFT) struck in July&#8211;has still not been approved by regulators.</p>
<p>More to the point, no one will really know what it means for Yahoo (YHOO) until the company finally embarks on the biggest bet of its recent history.</p>
<p>And that answer is many, many quarters away.</p>
<p>I began <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100120/the-one-year-report-card-of-yahoo’s-carol-bartz-product-innovation-d-from-readers-a-from-sheila-and-c-from-boomtown/">handing out marks to Bartz</a> recently, after she gave herself a B- for overall performance for the year since she took over the troubled Internet giant.</p>
<p>But I decided to be more specific, splitting the grades for Yahoo in 2009 into five categories: Management, financials, product innovation, deal-making and moxie.</p>
<p>I awarded Bartz an A- for management, a C+ for financials and a C- for product innovation so far.</p>
<p>And as much as I would like to give a definite grade for deal-making, she has made no other deals of major consequence on which to base a grade.</p>
<p>The deal to <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20091202/yahoos-project-rushmore-begins-with-massive-facebook-connect-deployment-across-internet-giant">integrate Facebook Connect</a> and Twitter? A catch-up long past due and not as impressive as similar ones by Google and Microsoft. The <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100112/like-boomtown-said-vmware-buys-zimbra-from-yahoo-plus-the-full-press-release">sale of Zimbra</a> and other assets? Essentially, cleaning up. A few minor acquisitions? No needle-movers in the lot.</p>

<p>Thus, the <em>only</em> deal has been with Microsoft, which is indeed a very big deal.</p>
<p>And it is, as I said, incomplete, although not to everyone.</p>
<p>Some thought the deal, which Bartz said she should have made sooner, was the best that Yahoo could pull off after the disastrous attempt by Microsoft to buy Yahoo for upward of $40 billion collapsed and left egg on everyone&#8217;s face.</p>
<p>With Google (GOOG) and Microsoft gearing up for a costly search war and no chance of Yahoo ever regaining any kind of tech advantage, the argument in favor goes, Bartz opted to get some kind of leverage while she still had some.</p>
<p>On many levels, that makes a lot of sense. And if it works, the deal will surely help improve Yahoo&#8217;s bottom line, cutting expenses in the search technology arena drastically and, the company hopes, giving it the ability to compete better in the marketplace by combining Yahoo and Microsoft search against the Google behemoth.</p>
<p>Presumably, if Yahoo can innovate in search experience and add to share, all is not lost.</p>
<p>But a lot of people certainly don&#8217;t like the deal, citing a variety of problems, especially the fact that Yahoo has essentially turned over all search monetization to Microsoft and traded away a big part of its business with no financial guarantees.</p>
<p>In fact, Bartz said in an interview with me at the seventh <strong>D: All Things Digital</strong> conference&#8211;months before she struck it&#8211;that she would want <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090731/boatloads-of-money-brings-boatloads-of-trouble-to-yahoos-bartz-the-video-plus-how-the-deal-almost-sunk/">&#8220;boatloads of money&#8221;</a> in any deal with Microsoft (see that video below).</p>

<p>At the time, most people thought she meant a gigantic upfront guaranteed payment for handing over search to Microsoft, which she did not get in the final deal.</p>
<p>Wrote one Internet exec in a long email to me, expressing a typical sentiment I have heard time and again:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>She would have been much better off to simply have sold the current Yahoo search biz to Microsoft along the lines of the deal Carl Icahn tried to broker the summer after the acquisition bid was pulled. The cut over could have happened much faster (just start running Bing results on Yahoo) and Microsoft would probably have given a revenue guarantee that would keep Yahoo whole on revenue per search for the traffic they generated. That would also have eliminated the sales overhead immediately, providing greater cost savings&#8230;She chose a middle-ground (classic Yahoo) and will end up with lower returns for the declining search business than she could otherwise have had.</p>
<p>Only reason she doesn&#8217;t get the F that [former Yahoo CEO and Co-founder] Jerry Yang obviously earned on this topic is that she did actually make a deal.</p></blockquote>
<p>And, indeed, Bartz had to play the cards she was handed by her predecessors, and they were not good ones.</p>
<p>Still, Yahoo is now depending on Microsoft to innovate in search technology. If it does not or cannot, look out below in that category, even if Yahoo recovers in its stronger display advertising arena.</p>
<p>So, with <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20091218/what-does-yahoos-search-decline-mean-and-more-to-the-point-can-it-be-stopped/">Yahoo&#8217;s search share declining of late</a>, even as that of Microsoft&#8217;s Bing grows, it is right to start worrying and be nervous.</p>
<p>Nonetheless, as much as I like to dole out grades and as much as Bartz&#8217;s detractors would like to say it is over, it&#8217;s probably fairer to wait and see what happens.</p>
<p>One thing is certain: Bartz has shown either amazing guts or an astonishing lack of foresight here.</p>
<p>But let&#8217;s save that particular grade&#8211;moxie&#8211;for tomorrow, on the day Yahoo&#8217;s fourth-quarter earnings <a href="http://yhoo.client.shareholder.com/results.cfm">come out</a> and Bartz is front and center in the earnings call.</p>

<p>Although BoomTown completely enjoyed having dinner with entertainment agency overlord Ari Emanuel last week&#8211;hey, it was a Hollywood party at the Consumer Electronics Show, so name-dropping <em>is</em> required&#8211;I have little interest in the money and scheduling machinations that broke out last week over NBC Universal&#8217;s late-night television talk shows.</p>
<p>But I do love the roundelay of online videos this Tinseltown mess has created.</p>
<p>It all has to do with Jay Leno stinking up the joint in his newish 10 pm time slot, which has caused NBC affiliates to revolt, which&#8211;in turn&#8211;has sent broadcast network execs into a decided chicken-with-its-head-cut-off panic.</p>
<p>Thus, their big and cloddish idea to reschedule Leno back to late night, while trying to hipcheck Conan O&#8217;Brien from his 11:35 pm perch, all without incurring a big contract penalty fee. Jimmy Fallon, who comes on after O&#8217;Brien, is also part of the shovefest, as is after-Fallon host Carson Daly.</p>
<p>And, of course, all of them got to comment on all of this on&#8211;yes&#8211;the late-night comedy routines that open their shows.</p>
<p>Here are Leno and O&#8217;Brien riffing on the silly crisis&#8211;as well as ABC&#8217;s late-night host Jimmy Kimmel weighing in with Daly&#8217;s help&#8211;at the GE (GE) unit that was just bought by Comcast (CMCSA).</p>

<p>Overall, the conference call boiled down to one quote from Morse that seems to have been selected as the Yahoo (YHOO) buzzword of the moment:</p>
<p>&#8220;The theme for third quarter was stabilization.&#8221;</p>

<p><strong>2:02 pm PDT:</strong> Investor stuff from guy who sounded like a robot that I completely ignored, since I was much more interested in a conversation between two women about a bad date this past weekend, which I eavesdropped on in its entirety while liveblogging from a Starbucks (SBUX) in San Francisco.</p>
<p>By the way, the man whom the ladies are ripping was a <em>very</em> unstable date!</p>
<p><strong>2:04 pm:</strong> Morse jumped on and gave everyone the bad news about Bartz being sick and the good news about the better-than-expected net income, while also updating all the various happenings of the quarter.</p>
<p>&#8220;I am happy to report that our Q3 revenue came in above our guidance range,&#8221; said Morse, who sounded somewhat jaunty.</p>
<p>Morse reeled off numbers, numbers and more numbers, some stuff about the new marketing campaign ($18 million spent so far and $45 million in the next quarter!) and other stuff about the cost cuts and fourth-quarter guidance.</p>
<p>Also, no sale of the company&#8217;s Alibaba in China or the Yahoo! Japan stake, thank you very much!</p>
<p><strong>2:12 pm:</strong> Morse also gave a <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20091007/microsoft-yahoo-deal-regulatory-update-eh/">quick update about the search and online advertising partnership Yahoo has struck with Microsoft</a> (MSFT).</p>
<p><a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2009/10/pagerank-algorithm.jpg"><img src="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2009/10/pagerank-algorithm-250x179.jpg" alt="pagerank-algorithm" title="pagerank-algorithm" width="250" height="179" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-19724" /></a></p>
<p>His message: The Silicon Vally Internet icon is <em>not</em> out of search, because it is not about the algorithm, but a better search product.</p>
<p>Tim, you might want to roll that claim back, especially since you also might want to notice how well Google (GOOG) has done with its giant math-brains in the search business.</p>
<p>Morse tried mightily to channel Bartz on search, using a comparison she has made about the Intel (INTC) chip, which is widely used by computer makers. Said Morse, it&#8217;s the &#8220;differentiation&#8221; that matters!</p>
<p>I wonder if Yahoo will keep repeating that one, even as its search share continues to decline.</p>
<p>But Morse did make a funny about how many ex-Yahoos are on the Microsoft payroll now, so the partnership transition should go smoothly.</p>
<p>Well, there&#8217;s <em>that</em>!</p>
<p><strong>2:28 pm:</strong> Morse mentioned Yahoo&#8217;s analysts day next week, and then opened up the call to questions.</p>
<p>Analysts always ask very dull questions at earnings calls and this one proved no different.</p>
<p>The first was about display run rate and about the search market in comparison to Google.</p>
<p>What&#8217;s the good word? Stabilization, of course!</p>
<p>The next question was about eBay (EBAY), which seems far from the point.</p>
<p>Morse agreed and cut it short.</p>
<p>Then, a question about guaranteed placement and stock buybacks. <em>Zzzzzzzzz</em>&#8211;even Morse sounded bored.</p>
<p>The Starbucks lovelorn ladies had left by now, so I was too.</p>
<p><strong>2:37 pm:</strong> The next question concerned the affiliate business and how it might be affected by the Microsoft deal.</p>
<p>I immediately summoned the barista, since it was clearly time for a double espresso!</p>
<p>A question came next about when the display ad business would recover from the econalypse. Morse: Stabilization!</p>
<p>Then, a query about gross margins and whether they can be maintained. Morse was not saying, except to point out that there was a &#8220;good, old-fashioned, get-your-hands-dirty&#8221; attitude at work at Yahoo now about watching costs.</p>

<p>I was suddenly worried about dirty-handed Yahoos, just when the CEO is sick!</p>
<p>Use Purell, please&#8211;or suffer the wrath of Judy!</p>
<p><strong>2:43 pm:</strong> Another question on ad sales and quality. Thus, I moved onto mainlining coffee beans en masse. I long for a visit from Juan Valdez!</p>
<p>Then, a question about Q4 guidance, which was not good enough for one analyst, who wanted more.</p>
<p>Morse did not really bite, although he talked a lot.</p>
<p>Next, a question about slow-growing page views and what was Yahoo planning to sell of its various assets.</p>
<p>Morse tried to be all silver-lining about page views and would not talk about specific divestitures (nor did he mention the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20091021/yahoo-hires-new-ma-head-but-whither-greg-mrva/">appointment of a new head of Yahoo M&#038;A</a>).</p>
<p>&#8220;We continue to look at the landscape,&#8221; he said.</p>
<p>What about more job cuts or hiring, since Yahoo added 200 people in the quarter? Morse noted Yahoo was staying strong in tech talent and was &#8220;putting feet on the street&#8221; in advertising.</p>
<p>Also something about paid inclusion, but a new person at Starbucks was having a really good cellphone argument, so I zoned out of Morse-talk for a second!</p>
<p><strong>2:56 pm:</strong> A question about premium and nonpremium inventory. Looks good on premium, said Morse.</p>

<p>The next query was about the different metrics between the new and old homepage, as well as a request for more info about the analyst day next week.</p>
<p>Morse refused to &#8220;steal my own thunder&#8221; on what is going to happen there. But, there will be <em>thunder</em>? I am always dubious when it comes to Yahoo and thunder.</p>
<p>As for the homepage, Morse said Yahoo was still evaluating the performance.</p>
<p><strong>2:58 pm:</strong> Mobile. Aaaaaghhh, another chance for Morse to say not much about anything substantive. Morse: Better and more established! Translation: No moolah yet!</p>
<p>A head count question. Will improvement come from cost cuts due to the Microsoft deal or revenue improvements?</p>
<p>Three guesses and the first two don&#8217;t count. Thanks for the <a href="http://d7.allthingsd.com/20090527/yahoo-ceo-carol-bartz-well-sell-search-to-microsoft-for-a-boatload-of-money">row-boatloads of money</a>, Microsoft!</p>
<p>Something about bookings and small-to-medium businesses. Morse did not understand the question and neither did I.</p>
<p>Next, a question on search monetization, which has weakened. Answer: Stabilization!</p>
<p><strong>3:02 pm:</strong> A question about the new $100 million branding campaign. Morse: &#8220;It&#8217;s very, very early.&#8221;</p>
<p>Some deal question and then one about behaviorial targeting, which Morse said will apparently be a &#8220;lifeblood&#8221; of the future.</p>
<p>Incredibly, Morse has gone hog-wild chatty with Bartz laid low and is asking for more questions, without making one good joke or salty remark yet.</p>

<p>I was completely losing it when it gets to ad exchange details and not as coffee-saturated as I needed to be.</p>
<p>Finally, the LAST question: Another one about divestiture and acquisition.</p>
<p>As if Morse was going to answer, referring instead&#8211;as he has many times in the call&#8211;to his &#8220;script.&#8221; Yahoo will buy stuff, Yahoo will sell stuff, but pretty much a no-comment!</p>
<p>And on that note&#8230;Carol: Please, <em>pretty please</em> GET WELL SOON!</p>

<p>For the past few months, the Huffington Post has been on a bit of a tear&#8211;both in terms of traffic gains and in its hiring of some big talent for key positions.</p>
<p>Now, those execs are focusing on using that consumer momentum to achieve what has eluded the Huffington Post thus far: Making some serious bank from the privately held news and media site.</p>
<p>How to help marketers to better understand the site and, therefore, spur this significant monetization will be his main focus at the Huffington Post, said <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090916/former-yahoo-and-aol-ad-exec-coleman-poised-to-join-the-huffington-post-as-president/">Greg Coleman</a> to BoomTown in an interview over the weekend.</p>
<p>Coleman&#8211;a former Yahoo (YHOO) advertising exec, as well as one for Time Warner (TWX) online unit AOL&#8211;was named president and chief revenue officer a month ago by Huffington Post&#8217;s new CEO, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090615/boomtown-interviews-arianna-ken-and-eric-about-huffington-post-exec-changes-bam/">Eric Hippeau</a>.</p>
<p>Hippeau, who was himself just appointed in June, is another well-known online media exec and has been a big investor and board member of the Huffington Post. (You can read a thorough <a href="http://paidcontent.org/article/419-huffpo-ceo-eric-hippeau-we-are-now-in-the-big-leagues/">interview by Staci Kramer with Hippeau</a> on paidContent.)</p>
<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s important for advertisers to know how big we have gotten, while also highlighting this amazing audience of influencers we have gathered,&#8221; said Coleman, in his first media chitchat since taking on the job. &#8220;I think it is the beginning of a tipping point.&#8221;</p>
<p>Well, of course, Coleman <em>would</em> say that, as the guy looking to drum up interest among marketers in spending their money on the Huffington Post.</p>
<p>But stats seem to indicate that consumers are increasingly liking what the Huffington Post is creating, because it is starting to surpass some well-known media icons on the Web in traffic.</p>
<p>While more of this increase is going to be due to a socialization of the news&#8211;the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090816/huffington-post-and-facebook-go-social-with-connect-on-steroids">Huffington Post has an aggressive deployment of Facebook Connect called HuffPost Social News</a>&#8211;the growth is more about building a brand people trust and seek out.</p>
<p>According to recent reports from both comScore (SCOR) and Nielsen Online, for example, the site just became larger than several online brands of big media companies, such as the Washington Post (WPO), in terms of unique monthly visitors.</p>
<p>In its September report, Nielsen clocked the Huffington Post at 9.47 million uniques, up 26 percent, while the Post site was at 9.2 million&#8211;a drop of 30 percent.</p>
<p>According to the Nielsen, the Huffington Post is within spitting distance of USA Today&#8217;s Web site (9.9 million), a Gannett (GCI) property.</p>
<p>And, it is bigger than Hearst Newspapers Digital (7.9 million) and the BBC (7.2 million).</p>
<p>For September, comScore has the Huffington Post (at 6.83 million) besting the Post (6.77 million)&#8211;as well as WSJ.com (6.7 million), a unit of Dow Jones, which is owned by News Corp. (NWS).</p>
<p>(The Wall Street Journal site, to be fair, makes a chunk of its revenue from subscription fees, rather than relying solely on advertising from traffic like the Huffington Post. And full disclosure: Dow Jones owns this site.)</p>
<p>In any case, big traffic is key for most news sites, and internal numbers from Google (GOOG) Analytics that Huffington Post execs cite are higher, as is typical for most sites, pegging traffic at about 27 million monthly uniques with more than two million reader comments per month.</p>
<p>Huffington Post co-founder and blogging icon Arianna Huffington attributes the recent boost in traffic to the site&#8217;s proclivity to &#8220;start conversations&#8221; that interest readers, such as her recent suggestion that Vice President Joe Biden should resign.</p>
<p>&#8220;We are aiming to go beyond just facts, to create a narrative,&#8221; said Huffington, who thinks the speed of news helps attract visitors to the site. &#8220;We think bringing journalism to a new level is exactly what people are looking for.&#8221;</p>
<p>Perhaps. But, even if traffic increases continue to bear her theories out, she and others have said that the Huffington Post still has not been regularly profitable despite doubling annual revenue&#8211;mostly in advertising&#8211;to what some estimate to be about $8 million in 2009.</p>
<p>While the site is aiming to invest rather than focus too hard on showing profits, Coleman said he would like to make revenue seven times larger in the next years, building on the performance of the site to vaunt past old media giants online.</p>
<p>&#8220;This kind of thing is a milestone for the marketing community,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Our goal is to be the top Internet newspaper, and this points out that we are on our way.&#8221;</p>
<p>To do that, he will have to spend some of the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20081201/huffington-post-nabs-25-million-in-funding-heres-an-exclusive-boomtown-interview-with-oak-investments-fred-harman">$37 million in funding</a> that the Huffington Post has raised from venture investors.</p>
<p>While the edit side is using the money to expand the number of news categories, Coleman said his focus will be on building a higher caliber team of sales and marketing execs with deeper relationships to big clients.</p>
<p>&#8220;Unlike selling an auto page on Yahoo (YHOO), our site has a more complex sales process that takes some time for people to understand,&#8221; said Coleman. &#8220;But once they get it, it should be an easier sale.&#8221;</p>

<p>Carol Bartz, <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090114/carol-bartz-the-all-caps-ceo/">Yahoo’s all caps CEO</a> has been <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/pressRelease/idUS134100+13-Oct-2009+BW20091013">tapped to deliver a keynote address at the 2010 Consumer Electronics Show</a>.</p>
<p>What’s Yahoo (YHOO) got to tout at a consumer electronics showcase? Could be an update to <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090109/jerry-yang-and-sue-decker-talk-about-yahoos-connected-tv-at-ces">Connected TV</a>, the same Internet-to-television platform the company debuted at CES last year. Or it could be something else entirely.</p>
<p>Either way it’s likely to be an interesting session. As Bartz’s F-bomb-dropping performance at <strong>D7</strong> demonstrated (see video below), she&#8217;s nothing if not colorful.</p>

<p>Yahoo <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090922/live-from-new-york-yahoo-introduces-you/">introduced its new $100 million marketing and branding campaign</a> in New York today with &#8220;It&#8217;s Y!ou&#8221; as the new motto, making use of the Internet giant&#8217;s famous exclamation point.</p>
<p>Sure, it&#8217;s clever and all, but BoomTown felt the need to jump in and help Yahoo (YHOO), since our posts have been a little tough when it has come to the Silicon Valley icon&#8217;s tumultuous ride over the last two years.</p>
<p>So, while CEO Carol Bartz (pictured above as a giant lady on the Nasdaq Jumbotron in Times Square) explained&#8211;as reported by MediaMemo&#8217;s Peter Kafka&#8211;that &#8220;Yahoo is the only site where you when you wake up in the morning and you want to know what’s going on everywhere about everything, you can find it one place,&#8221; I&#8217;d say there&#8217;s more to the brand that just that!</p>
<p>In fact, there&#8217;s Bartz herself, a sassy and ofttimes salty exec whose pugnacious utterances have become legend quickly.</p>
<p>Today, for example, when asked about a comparison with its search rival, she noted, &#8220;Why not be cynical about <em>fricking</em> Google?&#8221;</p>
<p>That was mild in comparison to her cursing me out at the seventh <strong>D: All Things Digital</strong> conference when she thought I was insinuating she was too old to be an Internet exec (you can see that exchange in the video below).</p>
<p>Thus, please take a gander at our branding effort for Yahoo below.</p>

<p>In any case&#8211;reminding BoomTown simultaneously of an unfortunate haircut I had at seven years old, those sticky sticks of powdered candy and, of course, Tinkerbell&#8211;Pixi seems to be a smaller, less featured and cheaper version of the Palm (PALM) Pre device.</p>
<p>Except super-adorably skinny and featuring &#8220;Sex-and-the-City&#8221;-style fashionable back covers by artists.</p>

<p>Pixi uses the Palm webOS platform and other software from third parties, such as Facebook and Yahoo (YHOO).</p>

<p>Palm said the Pixi is scheduled to be available exclusively from Sprint (S) in time for the holidays (you can read more details in the full press release below).</p>
<p>But the launch today is clearly a happily-ever-after play&#8211;one that will surely cause Palm to catch all kinds of flak, if anyone actually pays any sustained attention today to Pixi given the outsized focus on whatever innovation in the iPod or iPhone or iTunes that Apple (AAPL) might or might not announce.</p>
<p>And, if Jobs does appear, all geek hell is sure to break loose and Palm staffers can pretty much quit for the day and go see &#8220;Julie &#038; Julia&#8221; to familiarize themselves with the Pixi demographic.</p>
<p>By way of explanation, a Palm source wrote in an email to me last night, &#8220;timing&#8217;s a funny thing,&#8221; noting that this event has been long-planned to align with the demo debut of Pixi at Palm-sponsored Fashion Week in New York next week.</p>
<p>While one has to admire its minuscule chutzpah at going up against the Jobs-fueled juggernaut&#8211;a move even Google (GOOG) mobile plotter-in-chief Vic Gundotra wouldn&#8217;t attempt so overtly&#8211;let&#8217;s not hope the Pixi gets lost in the Apple sauce.</p>
<p>(Okay, sue me, but that line was too good to resist.)</p>

<p>Unlike, according to a <a href="http://blogs.wsj.com/digits/2009/09/03/dads-rants-become-a-twitter-hit/">very amusing article in The Wall Street Journal yesterday</a>, Justin Halpern&#8211;who has been tweeting wacky quips uttered by his dad without him knowing much about it, under the handle: <a href="http://twitter.com/shitmydadsays">@s—mydadsays</a>.</p>
<p>And, lo and behold, with only 28 tweets, the cranky 73-year-old has attracted almost 250,000 followers, after a spate of media attention and retweeting.</p>
<p>Some tweets included:</p>
<p><em>&#8220;Don&#8217;t touch the bacon, it&#8217;s not done yet. You let me handle the bacon, and i&#8217;ll let you handle&#8230;what ever it is you do. I guess nothing.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;You know, sometimes it&#8217;s nice having you around. But now ain&#8217;t one of those times. Now gimmie the remote we&#8217;re not watching this bullshit.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;What are you listening to?&#8230;I know who Hall &#038; Oates are god dammit. It&#8217;s the mustache guy and the gay man.&#8221;</em></p>
<p>The tweets have caused such a hubbub that Halpern has been approached by book agents, publishers and producers.</p>
<p><em>Rut-roh</em>, since my brother and I did the same thing at Walt Mossberg&#8217;s and my <strong>D: All Things Digital</strong> conference, typing up my mother&#8217;s observations of some of Silicon Valley&#8217;s poobahs and more in 140 characters.</p>
<p>We did so after she <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090807/the-outage-aftermath-louie-swisher-hearts-facebook-but-twitter-not-so-much">expressed her distaste of Twitter in a video</a> I showed before interviewing its founders, Biz Stone and Evan Williams, onstage (see below).</p>

<p>Some of her 40 tweets (which, I hate to admit, I have not updated since mid-June):</p>

<p>&#8220;Just met the twitter guys. They are so cute. I&#8217;m embarrassed.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;Oh my god! Kara put my wedding portrait as my twitter picture. Then again, I did look fabulous.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;Steve Ballmer just announced the name of his new search program. Bing! I don&#8217;t like it. It&#8217;s stupid. Reminds me of the Sopranos.&#8221;</em></p>
<p>Obviously, to catch Mr. Halpern, I am going to have to up my game and start stalking my mother for spicier fare&#8211;because from the mouths of parents, ofttimes come gems.</p>

<p>Eve Ensler, playwright, activist and creator of V-Day, appeared at the the seventh <strong>D: All Things Digital</strong> conference in late May to talk about the links between what goes into making mobile phones and human rights violations.</p>
<p>There, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090618/v-day-founder-eve-ensler-the-full-d7-session">Ensler (pictured above) shed much needed light</a> on the dire situation in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, where some of the worst atrocities are now being committed on the population in a terrible civil war.</p>
<p>She predicted it would get worse without massive international intervention.</p>
<p>Tragically, she was right.</p>
<p>Yesterday, the <a href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/08/10/AR2009081000492.html?hpid=topnews">Washington Post reported</a> that rapes of women were escalating dramatically&#8211;if that is even possible considering past devastation&#8211;in the Congo.</p>
<p>Reported the Post:</p>
<p>&#8220;An already staggering epidemic of rape has become markedly worse since the January deployment of tens of thousands of poorly trained, poorly paid Congolese soldiers, with people in front-line villages such as this one saying the soldiers are not so much hunting rebels as hunting women.&#8221;</p>
<p>It follows another <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2009/08/05/world/africa/05congo.html?_r=1&#038;scp=4&#038;sq=congo&#038;st=cse">recent report by the New York Times</a> about the rise of rapes of men too.</p>
<p>Today, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was in the Congo, where she <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2009/08/12/world/africa/12diplo.html?hp">unveiled a $17 million plan</a> to battle sexual violence in the country.</p>
<p>She said the situation was &#8220;evil in its basest form&#8221;</p>
<p>Ensler’s aim is to end the use of rape as a weapon of war there, which is, in part, a consequence of the region’s coltan trade. Coltan, or columbite tantalite, is a mineral essential to the manufacture of a wide array of consumer electronics, such as mobile phones and laptops.</p>
<p>Clinton mentioned these &#8220;conflict minerals&#8221; during her visit.</p>

<p>Yesterday&#8211;in a somewhat rambling but also riveting blog post about charging for content&#8211;serial entrepreneur and perennial gadfly Mark Cuban made a very important point that execs at every large media company should take to heart as they try to cope with the digital challenge.</p>
<p><em>Use your noggins, why dontcha? </em></p>
<p>Cuban aimed the piece at News Corp. head Rupert Murdoch, who has been the most vocal media mogul of late about the issue of getting paid online for the copious amount of original content the various parts of the media giant he runs make.</p>
<p>(Such as this site, which is owned by Dow Jones, which is owned by News Corp.)</p>
<p>&#8220;Rupert, you didn&#8217;t ask my opinion on this, but since when has that ever stopped me,&#8221; wrote Cuban in his post titled <a href="http://blogmaverick.com/2009/08/08/my-advice-to-fox-myspace-on-selling-content-yes-you-can/">&#8220;My Advice to Fox &#038; MySpace on Selling Content&#8211;Yes You Can.&#8221;</a> &#8220;First the good news. You can sell content on the internet. People pay for content on and off the internet every second of every day. It&#8217;s easy to do. If you do it right.&#8221;</p>
<p>Then, Cuban followed up with a long series of suggestions&#8211;in general, Cuban had more interesting ideas in one post than I have collectively heard in a while.</p>
<p>Like all good brainstorms, some are defensive moves, some offensive, some very interesting and some probably unworkable.</p>
<p>But, in this time of massive change, all are well worth considering because Cuban&#8217;s piece had the feel of throwing a whole bunch of ideas on the table and just knocking anything around&#8211;with the goal of creating a more important sense of discovery and entrepreneurialism.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s kind of like that great scene in the movie, &#8220;Apollo 13,&#8221; when the engineers had to come up with a solution for a dire problem, so they threw a pile of doodads on the table and started tinkering fast.</p>
<p>I dearly hope that is precisely what&#8217;s going on inside all the various media companies as they seek to maneuver the storm-tossed seas of change they find themselves in instead of the more typical inclination to throw blame in a time of crisis.</p>
<p>The problem, as it always turns out, is that industries in trouble always tend to shoot down ideas as they arise rather than embrace even the truly insane ones&#8211;one of which might turn out to be the innovation needed.</p>
<p>As Cuban correctly pointed out, that is often due to infighting at big corporations.</p>
<p>To the negative, I saw that up close and personal a half-dozen years ago as AOL was systematically dismembered at Time Warner (TWX), due to very real wounds from the disastrous merger, at the exact moment when everyone should have been pulling for it.</p>
<p>To the positive, it is clear that the many failings of Microsoft (MSFT) in the search game were what finally got it to take a greenfields approach with its recently announced Bing, which is finally a competitive product.</p>
<p>I like that kind of gumption, and it was nice to see that in just one blog post Cuban could come up with at least 10 ideas, many of which would doubtlessly not fly.</p>
<p>In fact, after one, Cuban wrote: &#8220;I don&#8217;t know if it will work, but it is sure worth exploring!&#8221;</p>
<p>It sure is.</p>
