Will Yahoo Be In Play Again? Here's a Few Scenarios (That Could Be More Than Just Scenarios)

One of the results of Yahoo’s weak earnings report earlier this week has been the renewal of chatter about possible changes in its leadership and even ownership. And continued investor discomfort with its troubled stock price and the level of renewed grumbling by major institutional shareholders is causing some key players to go back to their PowerPoints to reevaluate various options.

Exclusive: Ex-Yahoos–Plus Chief Yahoo Jerry Yang–in New Morado Ventures Fund (That's Spanish for Purple, Natch)

A new $10 million micro-venture fund, led by former Yahoo top engineering exec Ash Patel–called Morado Ventures and funded by a group largely made up of ex-Yahoos–is about to launch, according to sources close to the situation. Expected limited partners in Morado, which means “purple” in Spanish, include former Yahoo CEO Terry Semel, former COO Dan Rosensweig and former sales head Greg Coleman. Ex-Yahoo President Sue Decker is also considering investing, said sources. Also on deck: Yahoo’s two founders Jerry Yang and David Filo, both of whom are still at the company.

Where in the World Is Owen Van Natta? Try Zynga…

After longtime Internet tech exec Owen Van Natta was ousted from his job as CEO of MySpace last February, he seemed to drop off the map a bit to chillax and regroup. Not for long, though, as the former Facebook COO and Amazon exec soon began doing mentoring and unofficial consulting work with various Silicon Valley start-ups. Most especially, according to numerous sources, that effort has been largely focused on Zynga, the red-hot social gaming company, where many think he might eventually land as a top exec.

Fred Davis, the well-known entertainment and digital media lawyer, will join CBS Interactive head Quincy Smith at a new banking and advisory firm in Silicon Valley, according to several sources. Along with Davis, sources added, Smith is collecting a high-profile group of advisers to the still-unnamed firm, including Danny Rimer of Index Ventures, former Netscape CFO Peter Currie, and David Golden, EVP of former AOL CEO Steve Case’s Revolution LLC.

Chris DeWolfe Likely to Step Down as MySpace CEO; News Corp. Talking to Facebook Veteran Owen Van Natta

MySpace CEO Chris DeWolfe is likely to be on his way out of the company he helped found, and News Corp., which bought the social network in 2005, has a single potential successor in mind. Sources say that person is former Facebook COO Owen Van Natta, who is currently CEO of music start-up Project Playlist. People familiar with the matter tell me that DeWolfe and News Corp., specifically new digital boss Jon Miller, are discussing a leadership change today.
