Viral Video: “The Watch”

Aliens, a space ray that blows up cows, and a bunch of dopes. What’s not to like?

Viral Video: "Another Earth" (Another Life?)

For anyone who loves the idea of a doppelgänger–someone out there who is you except different–this trailer for much-anticipated indie film, “Another Earth,” is for you. It’s about astrophysics and accidents and aliens and alienation, on the occasion of the “discovery of a duplicate planet in the solar system.”

SETI: The Search for Extra Terrestrial Income

Good news for alien privacy advocates. After more than 50 years of hunting for alien radio signals, the Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence (SETI) has been called off–not because it hasn’t made contact, but because it can’t make budget. Last Friday, the SETI Institute shut down its Allen Telescope Array (ATA), a field of radio dishes in northern California it had been using to listen for alien radio emissions, while it searches for $5 million to help cover operating costs for two years. For now, the ATA has been put into “hibernation,” SETI CEO Tom Pierson told donors–and this just as planet-hunting progress is booming.

Viral Video: "Super 8” and "Portal 2” Interactive Movie Trailer

Though BoomTown was dubious, this trailer for the upcoming J.J. Abrams movie “Super 8″ is pretty cool beans. It is in the style of an interactive video game–in fact, Abrams worked with the creators of the recently released “Portal 2″ to embed it right into the video game.

Viral Video: "Attack the Block" and BoomTown Debut at SXSW

Like many a geek–and after a decade away–I’m headed to South by Southwest later this week. To get in the mood for the well-known multimedia festival in Austin, here’s one of the films making its debut this coming weekend. It’s called “Attack the Block,” and has the best tag line ever: “Inner City Versus Outer Space.” Which is just about how I am feeling about SXSW!

Viral Video: "Battle: Los Angeles"

This movie looks like a special-effects doozy. In “Battle: Los Angeles,” like all in this genre, the aliens want to kill us. With lots of explosions, natch. Here’s the noisy preview, in which it is not looking good for the human race.

What's Really Behind the Rupe-a-Dope With Google and Microsoft? Here Are Five Possibilities!

There certainly is a lot of noisy swirl of late around the escalating fight between Google and some traditional media companies over content online. The loudest voice in this fight has clearly been News Corp. kingpin Rupert Murdoch, who seemingly has not met a television interviewer of late he did not regale with tales of the search giant’s nefariousness. Murdoch has also tried to get Google’s biggest nemesis, Microsoft, involved in what has become a wrestling match over the future of news. But what’s really happening here? Here are five possibilities to consider.

"V" Is Very, Very, Very V-abulous, but Not Online

ABC certainly has been taking its sweet time in releasing the first episode of “V,” a sci-fi television series that debuted earlier this week on the Web in any substantial way. The premiere of a redo of a 1980s miniseries about a lizardy alien invasion disguised as a peace mission by outerspace hotties turned out to be a big broadcast hit, but it is hard to watch online. Until tomorrow, that is.
