			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Headset maker Jawbone thinks it has found another nifty use for its electronic earwear. The company is using <strong>D: Dive Into Mobile</strong> to announce Thoughts, an iPhone app that lets road warriors dictate a quick thought that gets delivered as an audio file to whomever they like. If the recipient also has the Thoughts app, they can get messages delivered there. If not, the program can send either an email or text with a link to the recorded message, or even a computer transcription if they need one.</p>

It&#8217;s really convenient for senders. With just a press of a button, they can dictate the equivalent of a text message and know that it will reach the person. It&#8217;s like sending a voicemail without having to listen to that annoying message or&#8211;heaven forbid&#8211;talk to someone. You can even share your thought with various groups of people.</p>
<p>As for the recipients, I&#8217;m not sure how they will take to an influx of &#8220;thoughts&#8221; should their friends or company really start digging the new messaging option.</p>
<p>In any case, Thoughts is a free download due shortly at the App Store, so it won&#8217;t cost a thing to try it out. You don&#8217;t even need a headset, though it integrates well with Jawbone&#8217;s gear and software. However, the goal of the software is to make headsets more versatile.</p>
<p>Plantronics is also trying to expand the device&#8217;s utility, in its case expanding from a cellphone-only headset to one that can talk to Skype and enterprise phone systems, in addition to cellphones. </p>

<p>He says they love voice because it is the oldest method of communication. &#8220;It&#8217;s better for expressing emotion,&#8221; says Rahman.</p>
<p><strong>4:20 pm</strong>: He opens Jawbone Thoughts on his iPhone 4. </p>
<p>The app is a hybrid between texting and voicemail&#8211;quickly sending a voice message to an individual or group.</p>
<p><strong>4:21 pm</strong>: Rahman sends a message, and now we switch to the receiver&#8217;s phone. </p>
<p>The interface is slick, and avatar-driven. Feels like playing song demos in iTunes&#8211;just a snippet to get a quick idea.</p>
<p><strong>4:23 pm</strong>: The app also has a text-to-speech engine for text messages. </p>
<p>Kara asks, &#8220;Can you control it with voice&#8230;so no tapping on the screen?&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;Soon. We are waiting on some APIs,&#8221; says Rahman.</p>
<p><strong>4:25 pm</strong>: The app can also send voice messages or texts to people who don&#8217;t have the app. It just sends a text message or email.</p>
<p>The demo ends with a mention of version 2.0 for the app.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>In April, Cisco unveiled a wide-ranging collaboration with Aliph&#8211;a San Francisco start-up that is famous for the noise-canceling Jawbone Bluetooth mobile headset&#8211;to put its software and device in Cisco&#8217;s IP phones in the enterprise.</p>
<p>It launches today.</p>
<p>The Cisco (CSCO) deployment is a big win for Aliph, since the networking giant is a dominant player in the arena to provide telephony solutions to businesses, part of its <a href="http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/sw/voicesw/index.html">Voice and Unified Communications</a> division.</p>
<p>The idea is to use the Jawbone device and the software that manages it to allow workers to move around an office and have the call move with them, echoing increasingly mobile consumer behavior. That will even include jumping from office phones to mobile devices.</p>
<p>To do this, Cisco will be using Aliph&#8217;s technology, which the start-up is calling a &#8220;wearable platform.&#8221;</p>
<p>The company was formally launched in 2004&#8211;in fact, at the <strong>D: All Things Digital</strong> conference&#8211;by Alexander Asseily and Hosain Rahman, who met as Stanford University undergraduates.</p>
<p>It is funded by Silicon Valley venture powerhouses Khosla Ventures and Sequoia Capital, as well as smaller investors, who put in a total of $43 million.</p>
<p>With the stylish and innovative Jawbone, Aliph has turned a lot of heads in the wireless headset space, aimed directly at high-end consumers.</p>
<p>It is prominently featured, for example, in Apple (AAPL) retail stores.</p>
<p>Now, it is finally in the workplace.</p>

<p>Since it <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090705/new-vc-marc-andreessen-speaks-about-the-dark-side-and-more/">launched almost exactly a year ago</a> with a $300 million fund, the venture firm of <a href="http://www.a16z.com/">Andreessen Horowitz</a> has cut a rather high-profile path through the Silicon Valley investing community.</p>
<p>And it&#8217;s clear the firm has been aiming to make a big splash in the sector&#8211;from its involvement in the fractious fight over the spin-off of <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20091106/all-is-forgiven-its-a-clean-slate-says-andreessen-about-lawsuit-mad-skype-co-founders">Skype</a> to its funding of a series of high-profile start-ups (<a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20091218/zyngas-mark-pincus-talks-about-big-funding-offer-ad-controversies-and-more/">Zynga</a>, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20091124/asana-gets-9-million-no-its-not-yoga-stance-its-a-new-start-up-from-former-facebookers">Asana</a>, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100422/exclusive-kakai-stealthy-no-more-its-a-kindle-for-students-and-much-more/">Kno</a> and Rockmelt) to its most recent aggressive moves to finally win the top spot in investing in hot social location site <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100629/location-location-location-foursquare-nabs-20-million-in-vc-funding-at-95-million-pre-money-valuation-plus-blog-posts-of-course">Foursquare</a>.</p>
<p>Now, according to sources and after spending about half its kitty, Andreessen Horowitz is poised to begin another round of fundraising to further bolster its clout.</p>
<p>While it is unclear how much the VC firm will raise, sources expect it to be much more than its first fund.</p>
<p>In its last go-round, the firm had a quick completion of the fund raising, in the midst of a national econalypse. So many assume the next try will be a lot easier, especially given its knack for grabbing hot deals.</p>
<p>A spokeswoman for Andreessen Horowitz declined to comment on future fundraising plans.</p>
<p>The firm is going to need the money as it <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100614/outcasts-wennmachers-joins-andreessen-horowitz-as-partner/">expands its partners</a> and ambitions to change the venture landscape, as iconic entrepreneur Marc Andreessen noted when he founded the firm with his longtime business partner Ben Horowitz in July of 2009.</p>
<p>Andreessen said then that he was essentially professionalizing the active angel investing that he and Horowitz had been doing.</p>
<p>Over the last several years, either together or apart, the pair have invested in a large variety of innovative start-ups, such as Twitter, Aliph, Digg, LinkedIn and many more.</p>
<p>Andreessen is on the board of Facebook and an adviser to Twitter too.</p>
<p>In an interview with me last year, Andreessen said that unlike many VC firms, Andreessen Horowitz will invest in companies at any stage of life&#8211;from early stage to late&#8211;and of any size and in any kind of digital sector and will focus on companies led by tech-savvy founders.</p>
<p>He also expressed a disdain for the way the venture business was run.</p>
<p>&#8220;For the first time in my life, I am crossing over into the dark side,&#8221; said Andreessen at the time, in a joke about VCs being like Darth Vader.</p>
<p>At the time, he also noted that money talked. &#8220;It&#8217;s important to have more capital,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Sometimes having a huge checkbook is a great thing.&#8221;</p>
<p>Well, we&#8217;ll see if Andreessen Horowitz can make that checkbook even larger.</p>

<p>The move will make her one of a handful of women at high-profile venture outfits.</p>
<p>At Andreessen Horowitz, she&#8217;ll focus on bringing marketing expertise to the firm and its portfolio companies, starting in September.</p>
<p>&#8220;For me, it&#8217;s a chance to build a top-notch VC firm and work with talented entrepreneurs, so what&#8217;s not to like?&#8221; wrote Wennmachers in an email to BoomTown (who got off a horse in Wyoming to write this).</p>
<p>Andreessen Horowitz has made a big splash since it was created a year ago with $300 million in funding. Its portfolio of high-profile companies includes Skype, RockMelt and Zynga.</p>
<p>Wennmachers got to know both Marc Andreessen and Ben Horowitz when they hired OutCast to <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090612/andreessen-completes-raising-dough-for-his-300-million-venture-fund-let-the-investing-begin">launch their firm last year</a>. Andreessen Horowitz will continue to be an OutCast client.</p>
<p>OutCast was founded 13 years ago by Wennmachers and Caryn Marooney. It was bought by Next Fifteen Communications in 2005, but has been operated independently ever since and will continue to be.</p>
<p>In fact, Marooney will continue to run OutCast, which has more than 80 employees in San Francisco and New York.</p>
<p>Its clients reflect a breadth of Web and other companies&#8211;big and small, public and private&#8211;also including AdMob, Aliph, Amazon (AMZN), Autodesk (ADSK), Bloom, VMware (VMW), salesforce.com (CRM), Code Advisors, Cisco (CSCO), Zimbra and Netflix (NFLX).</p>
<p>&#8220;OutCast is the best in the business. Between VMware, salesforce.com and Facebook, they have an outstanding track record of working with the best companies and making them more valuable,&#8221; said Andreessen. &#8220;We are thrilled that one of the founders has decided to join our firm. Margit&#8217;s experience in building brands will be a big asset to Andreessen Horowitz and our portfolio.&#8221;</p>

<p>Today at a partner event, Cisco will unveil a wide-ranging collaboration with Aliph&#8211;a San Francisco start-up that is famous for its noise-cancelling Jawbone Bluetooth mobile headset&#8211;to deploy its software and device in its IP phones in the enterprise.</p>
<p>It is a big win for Aliph, since the networking giant is a dominant player in the arena to provide telephony solutions to businesses, part of its <a href="http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/sw/voicesw/index.html">Voice and Unified Communications</a> division.</p>
<p>The idea, said sources, is to use the Jawbone device and the software that manages it to allow workers to move around an office and have the call move with them, echoing increasingly mobile consumer behavior.</p>
<p>BoomTown had heard rumors of intense interest in Aliph by Cisco (CSCO) months ago and assumed a purchase to add to its growing consumer portfolio, such as its recent <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090319/flip-flips-to-cisco-for-590-million-in-stock">acquisition of Pure Digital&#8217;s Flip camera line</a>.</p>
<p>But that did not turn out to be the case&#8211;instead it is more a partnership, said sources, to use Aliph&#8217;s technology.</p>
<p>The company was formally launched in 2006&#8211;in fact, at the <strong>D: All Things Digital</strong> conference&#8211;by Alexander Asseily and Hosain Rahman, who met as Stanford University undergraduates. It is funded by Khosla Ventures and Sequoia Capital.</p>
<p>With the stylish and innovative Jawbone&#8211;the most recent of which is <a href="http://solution.allthingsd.com/20100119/connecting-with-your-inner-earpiece">reviewed here</a> by The Mossberg Solution&#8217;s Katherine Boehret&#8211;Aliph turned a lot of heads in the wireless headset space, aimed directly at high-end consumers.</p>
<p>Now, it is apparently pivoting into the workplace.</p>
<p>While Rahman confirmed the collaboration, he did not give a lot of details, although he did agree to sit down with me last night to broadly sketch out the new relationship.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Apps are hot. These are the small programs that can be installed on a digital gadget to get it to do more than what it did when you bought it. Apple&#8217;s (AAPL) iPhone and iPod Touch are the best app platforms right now thanks to the company&#8217;s App Store, which offers an estimated 125,000 apps. Research in Motion (RIMM), Android, and Palm (PALM) devices also work with apps.</p>
<p>But why should smart phones have all the fun? Yahoo (YHOO) Connected TVs from Samsung, LG (LG), Sony (SNE), and Vizio allow people to load app-like &#8220;widgets&#8221;—including Facebook, Twitter, weather and stock quotes—onto their big-screen TVs. And GPS navigation devices take advantage of apps for information on fuel prices and traffic. </p>

<p>This week, I tested a Bluetooth earpiece that also can be made smarter with apps: Aliph&#8217;s $100 Jawbone Icon (http://us.jawbone.com). Like many other wireless earpieces, it connects to your Bluetooth-enabled phone so you can talk, hands-free. Unlike other Bluetooth earpieces, the Jawbone Icon can be plugged into a computer and loaded with different settings and apps. This works using Aliph&#8217;s Web-based software platform called MyTalk (http://mytalk.jawbone.com) and some apps enable more than hands-free talking. </p>
<p>For now, there are only two apps that truly expand the functionality of the earpiece, in my opinion. But MyTalk is a good start in making this tiny Bluetooth device more sophisticated and encouraging more hands-free productivity.</p>
<p>The idea of connecting an earpiece to a PC is helpful in two respects. First, it turns the Jawbone into a dynamic product that can be updated and enhanced over time, rather than never changing from the day you buy it. Second, it lets users more easily adjust the settings of a device that&#8217;s too tiny to have its own screen, thus eliminating the need for more confusing buttons on the device. Over time, these earpieces could become even simpler and smaller as more of their settings are adjusted on the computer.</p>
<p>Since the Jawbone Icon and its MyTalk software platform launched this week, only five &#8220;dial apps&#8221; and 10 &#8220;audio apps&#8221; are available for synching to the earpiece. The former are apps that perform functions by dialing out on your phone, like hands-free text messaging; the latter are settings to adjust the voice making announcements in your ear, like telling you that the battery needs charging. As of now, only one of each app category can be synched onto the Jawbone Icon at any given time. Aliph plans to make the Icon capable of simultaneously running multiple apps sometime this year.</p>
<p>If you ever used one of the earlier Jawbone models and thought you weren&#8217;t hip enough to remember how its hidden earpiece buttons worked, the Jawbone Icon&#8217;s refreshingly simple design will bring a sigh of relief. It uses two easily detected controls. One is an obvious button on the top of the earpiece that controls the earpiece&#8217;s functions. The other is a tiny on/off switch on the inside surface that couldn&#8217;t be easier to use. </p>

<p>The Icon comes in six models with catchy names that match the &#8220;persona&#8221; of the  audio apps: The Hero, The Rogue, The Ace, The Catch, The Thinker and The Bombshell—each literally has its own distinct voice. Each device weighs less and has a wider and shorter design than previous Jawbones. The Icons come in shades of black, silver, white, red and gold, depending on the model&#8217;s persona, and resemble handsome jewelry. </p>
<p>Each earpiece has a short, gray bendable USB connector that allows for easy  access to a PC&#8217;s USB port. This is used for synching and charging the earpiece, though a separate wall charger also comes in the box. </p>
<p>I tested my Jawbone Icon by plugging it into both an Apple MacBook Pro and a Dell (DELL) running Windows 7. I logged onto http://mytalk.jawbone.com and requested an invitation to use the MyTalk software by sending Aliph my email since it&#8217;s still in a &#8220;private beta&#8221; or experimental phase. You&#8217;ll have to do the same until MyTalk comes out of its private beta stage sometime in the next few months. </p>
<p>After setting up an account using my email and a password, I followed on-screen instructions to get started with synching apps to my earpiece.</p>
<p>MyTalk&#8217;s dial apps include five programs that help you do more with your voice, so you don&#8217;t need to look down to type on a mobile device. Once synched with your Jawbone Icon, the app will activate as soon as you press and hold the earpiece button. </p>
<p>For now, only two of the five dial apps are really helpful for the headset: Jott and Dial2Do. Both let people use their voice to send themselves reminders, send tweets on Twitter, and send text messages—assuming the programs correctly interpret what is dictated. I had pretty good luck with this, though one test of the text-messaging function thought I said &#8220;needle&#8221; when I really said &#8220;noodle&#8221; and another interpreted &#8220;blinds&#8221; as &#8220;blind.&#8221;</p>
<p>Of the two, I found Dial2Do a little easier to use. Its Basic Account is free but is limited to sending yourself reminders, while a Pro Account costs $40 a year or $3.99 a month, and offers social-networking, emailing and text-messaging, among other things. Jott can only be used free for one week, but requires a credit-card number for signing up and will charge $2.95 a month after the trial week is over. </p>
<p>MyTalk&#8217;s remaining three dial apps aren&#8217;t too exciting: &#8220;Directory Assistance 411&#8243; and &#8220;Voice Dial,&#8221; a feature that only works if your phone has built-in voice-dial capability, which most do now. Another app called 1-800-FREE411 lets users get 411 information without being charged carrier fees. </p>
<p>MyTalk&#8217;s audio apps include six playful voices, three in different languages (German, Spanish and French) and one plain, unaccented English voice. Each of the playful voices has a coinciding photo and name when you&#8217;re picking settings on the Web site. One called &#8220;The Bombshell&#8221; is represented by an attractive, blonde woman who speaks in a sexy voice. A voice called &#8220;The Rogue&#8221; says, &#8220;I am ready for my assignment,&#8221; when the earpiece is turned on. During most of my testing, I kept my Jawbone Icon set on &#8220;The Ace,&#8221; represented by a woman with a smart British accent who said, &#8220;They can wait,&#8221; when I declined calls. </p>
<p>The chosen audio app voice speaks every so often, like when the device is turned on, when you query the headset&#8217;s remaining battery life (an indicator light also tells you the remaining charge), when an incoming call is received or when you turn the headset off. But the Voice Dial app uses the standard voice that comes with your device&#8217;s voice-dialing capability—not the fun audio app voice you&#8217;ve chosen. </p>
<p>Another downside to the headset is that it isn&#8217;t yet able to tell you the name of whoever is calling even if you have them as a contact in your phone; instead, it only reads the phone number aloud. If you&#8217;re like me, you don&#8217;t know have many numbers memorized anymore, so this isn&#8217;t helpful. Instead, it forced me to look at my phone for the caller ID, defeating the purpose of a hands-free earpiece. Aliph hopes to fix this problem within a year.</p>
<p>The Jawbone Icon is the first earpiece to use a software platform for adding apps, and MyTalk makes synching easy. Although Aliph plans to offer more apps and software updates for the Jawbone Icon (and subsequent devices), there will likely always be some activities that are simply too difficult to perform using voice alone. But MyTalk is a good first step toward making the Bluetooth earpiece more useful.</p>

<p>The week that took us from August to September was one for the books over at BoomTown, especially if you’re 12.</p>
<p>Kara spent <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090831/kara-visits-guitar-hero-hq-for-a-sneak-peek-of-gh5-band-hero-and-dj-hero/">Monday morning</a> at Activision Blizzard (ATVI), where they are pushing forward with the entire Guitar Hero line, even as the game industry faces a nearly 50 percent decline in U.S. sales this year. Kara got to play hero to several of the forthcoming releases, including previewing the much anticipated <a href="http://video.allthingsd.com/video/a-sneak-peek-of-guitar-hero-5-band-hero-dj-hero/EE932085-F34B-414B-A63D-C1195B5DEB28">DJ Hero console</a>.</p>
<p>The youth movement continued with the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090903/fancy-bar-graphs-of-the-week-zero-surprise-the-youngs-love-new-media-more-than-the-olds/">fancy bar graph</a> from Forrester Research’s annual &#8220;State of Consumers and Technology,&#8221; which drove home an important fact of life for media outlets. All the money being spent on new media expansion is a fight for the young; older consumers are sticking to more reliable fare.</p>
<p>BoomTown wasn’t just about the kids though, as 23andMe co-founder <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090904/23andme-co-founder-linda-avey-leaves-start-up-to-focus-on-alzheimers-research/">Linda Avey announced her exit</a> from the gene-juicing business to focus on a foundation related to Alzheimer’s research. Avey co-founded 23andMe with Anne Wojcicki in 2006 with early money from Genentech (DNA), Google (GOOG) and New Enterprise Associates, as well as Wojcicki’s husband, Google co-founder Sergey Brin.</p>
<p>While BoomTown was keepin&#8217; it real with the kids, Digital Daily was abuzz with a spate of iPhone news. John started Monday off on the topic of the <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090831/its-official-apple-announces-sept-9-event/">Sept. 9 iPod event</a> with confirmation that music, indeed, will be center stage. In the Apple world, that means iPods and iTunes, though <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090831/want-to-play-with-the-beatles-but-dont-want-to-pay-for-rock-band-try-jamlegend-soon/">Beatles fans</a> are keeping their fingers crossed.</p>
<p>Readers got a compare-and-contrast of Apple’s (AAPL) foreign and domestic policy when John covered a potential <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090901/apple-in-iphone-talks-with-second-chinese-carrier/">two-carrier system in China</a> and the long-awaited stateside <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090903/att-iphone-mms-on-sept-25/">activation of MMS</a> features in the iPhone OS3. Meaning that while China may get the iPhone carrier flexibility so far absent in the U.S. market, American consumers are just about to get a new feature that’s been standard on every smartphone for a year or more.</p>
<p>MediaMemo covered a fluid week in the world of media giants and Top Chefs. Disney (DIS) went off to the mines and instead of seven dwarfs, found <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090831/spidey-meet-mickey-disney-buying-marvel-for-4-billion/">Marvel</a> and the rights to its 5,000-character portfolio. <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090831/live-disney-marvel-call/">Disney CEO Bob Iger</a> didn’t think $4 billion was too much to pay to bring Iron Man and friends to the happiest media empire on earth and is sure the company will benefit from such &#8220;rich intellectual property.&#8221;</p>
<p>If the Disney vault got 5,000 new friends this week, <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090901/sold-finally-ebay-ditches-65-of-skype-for-19-billion/">eBay said goodbye</a> to one long-time partner. Peter reported that the long, difficult breakup between eBay and Skype was finalized when eBay sold a 65 percent stake in the VOIP juggernaut to the internationally mixed bag of Silver Lake, Index ventures, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090705/new-vc-marc-andreessen-speaks-about-the-dark-side-and-more/">Andreessen Horowitz</a> and a Canadian pension fund.</p>
<p>Peter rounded out the week of motion with lots of changes in Google’s ranks. The search giant shuffled the chairs with <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090902/google-still-shuffling-sales-force-self-serve-exec-david-fischer-steps-aside/">David Fischer moving</a> out of the self-serve ad business with no sign yet of a replacement. <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090904/google-swaps-out-china-bosses/">Google China</a> saw the big chair turn upside-down when Kai-Fu Lee announced that he’d leave the company this month to begin his own venture. Lee will be replaced by the tag team of Boon-Lock Yeo and John Liu, who will oversee engineering and business, respectively.</p>
<p>Not all Google’s shifts were outbound though. &#8220;Charlie’s Café&#8221; at the main campus got its <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090903/googles-top-chef-leaves-las-vegas/">Top Chef </a>back after Preeti Mistry failed to make the cut on the Las Vegas iteration of the popular TV show. Regular fans of the show <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090821/googles-top-chef-tripped-up-by-shellfish/">weren’t surprised by her dismissal</a>, but at least Google can put one in the plus column this week.</p>
<p>Over at The Mossberg Solution, Katie took aim at a possible answer to a question plaguing all image-conscious technophiles: <a href="http://solution.allthingsd.com/20090901/bluetooth-headsets-that-up-the-chic-factor/">Yea or nay to the omnipresent Bluetooth earpiece</a>. Plantronics (PLT) and Aliph, maker of the Jawbone, both say yea and are upping the ante on the recently reviled symbol of cellphone userdom. Katie reviewed the fashion-forward <a href="http://video.allthingsd.com/video/mossberg-solutionboehret-tests-two-phone-headsets/8AD52747-E975-4890-8B2D-306A3D2B590A">Discovery 975 and Jawbone Prime</a>, each designed to separate its users from $130. In exchange, they&#8217;ll get redesigned outsides and some new features that might even put one back in Brad Pitt’s ear.</p>

<p>Fashionable or not, more people are wearing these wireless headsets for making phone calls in the car and in everyday life. This week, I reviewed two that look stylish enough that you won&#8217;t mind being seen wearing them: Plantronics Inc.&#8217;s Discovery 975 (<a href="http://Plantronics.com">Plantronics.com</a>) and Aliph&#8217;s Jawbone Prime (<a href="http://Jawbone.com">Jawbone.com</a>).   </p>
<p>These Bluetooth headsets cost $130 each and use the best technology from their respective companies, including impressive-sounding features like AudioIQ 2, WindSmart, NoiseAssassin 2.0 and an Acoustic Voice Activity Detector. Each headset aims to deliver clearer incoming and outgoing sound.</p>
<p>After using these two headsets in an office, while walking through noisy city streets and as I drove a car with its windows open, I found that I liked the Plantronics Discovery 975 more than the Jawbone Prime. It felt more comfortable and stable in my ear, and its longer boom fit my face better than the Jawbone Prime&#8217;s stubby build. I was able to hear people more clearly while using the Plantronics (PLT) earpiece. But on the other end of the call, friends said the Jawbone Prime did a better job of muffling noise.  </p>
<p>The Plantronics Discovery 975 also has something that the Jawbone Prime doesn&#8217;t have: a carrying case that holds the earpiece and charges it on the go. This charging case can triple the device&#8217;s talk time from five to 15 hours, and it holds its charge for a week on standby. A display on the case shows how much battery remains both in the charged case and on the earpiece itself when it&#8217;s held in the case. </p>

Aliph’s Jawbone Prime</div>
<p>I liked using this case because it meant I didn&#8217;t have to think so often about charging my headset. It also gave me a place to keep the small Discovery 975 earpiece, making it harder to lose in the bottom of a purse or large work bag. Though people who don&#8217;t carry briefcases or purses wouldn&#8217;t likely use this case, it&#8217;s convenient to have the option.</p>
<p>None of the Jawbone models come with carrying cases, though stores like Best Buy sell some cases that will hold Jawbone headsets. In the future, Aliph says it plans to make its own cases that will hold and charge its Jawbone headsets.</p>
<p>Aliph&#8217;s Jawbone has always been one of the most stylish Bluetooth headsets, thanks to its compact form factor and disguised buttons. The Jawbone Prime follows suit with a design that makes it appear slightly smaller than its predecessor. It comes in seven colors, including four especially bright &#8220;EarCandy&#8221; hues: Drop Me a Lime, Lilac You Mean It, &#8216;Yello! and Frankly Scarlet. The Prime maintains the original Jawbone&#8217;s namesake design feature: If worn properly, it touches your face near your jawbone and removes background noise. But a new feature also uses sound to detect the speaker&#8217;s voice and eliminate extraneous noise, so the headset doesn&#8217;t always need to touch the face.</p>
<p>The design of the Plantronics Discovery 975 ups the company&#8217;s chic factor by replacing its former model&#8217;s triangular boom with an elegant boom made of a single thin metallic sliver. It reminded me more of jewelry than a tech gadget. Like the Jawbone models, it looks less geeky because buttons are disguised, and it doesn&#8217;t emit a blinking blue light while in use—an improvement for Plantronics. The Discovery 975 comes only in graphite, though AT&#038;T (T) stores will carry it in silver. </p>
<p>I started testing the Plantronics Discovery 975 and Jawbone Prime from my quiet office, without any distracting background noise. There, the Plantronics headset sounded better than the Jawbone, making my voice sound crisper, according to the person on the other end of line; likewise, his voice sounded louder to me. He also said he couldn&#8217;t tell I was using a headset while I was on the Discovery 975, but definitely knew I was on a headset while I used the Jawbone Prime.</p>

<p>Next, I walked along the streets of busy downtown Washington, D.C., chatting on each headset while standing steps away from the squeaky sound of car brakes and taxis honking. Here, the Jawbone did a better job of fading that street noise into the background, compared to the Plantronics headset. </p>
<p>I also took turns using the Jawbone Prime and Plantronics Discovery 975 while driving through the city with all four car windows open to test the antiwind capabilities of each. Here again, the Jawbone Prime sounded better to the person on the other end, though the Plantronics didn&#8217;t sound bad. My friend said it would have been impossible to guess where I was while making the phone call using the Jawbone Prime. But from my end of the call, I was able to hear slightly better while using the Plantronics Discover 975.  </p>
<p>While using the Jawbone, I accidentally hung up on friends in midconversation a few different times because the place where I pressed to secure the earpiece in my ear was also the Talk button. I tried each of the Jawbone Prime&#8217;s three fit earbuds, three round earbuds and its included earloop, but none of these felt as comfortable as the Plantronics headset.</p>
<p>Both headsets are capable of using Multipoint technology, allowing them to connect to two Bluetooth devices at once. They&#8217;re each lightweight at .28 ounce and .35 ounce for the Plantronics and Jawbone, respectively; the Plantronics case weighs 1.27 ounces. According to each company, the Plantronics headset takes one-and-a-half hours to fully charge and lasts for five hours of talk time; the Jawbone takes 50 minutes to fully charge and lasts four and a half hours of talk time.</p>
<p>When both headsets were in front of me and I wanted to make a hands-free call, I reached for the Plantronics Discovery 975 because of its overall fit and feel in my ear. It stayed in place using a soft, gel insert that wasn&#8217;t uncomfortable, even after long conversations.  Its sound quality was good enough for me.</p>

<p>It&#8217;s finally official: Marc Andreessen has crossed over to what he once called &#8220;the dark side&#8221; and is now a venture capitalist.</p>
<p>Several weeks ago, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090612/andreessen-completes-raising-dough-for-his-300-million-venture-fund-let-the-investing-begin">BoomTown broke the news that the Silicon Valley legend and serial entrepreneur</a> (pictured here) and his longtime investing partner, Ben Horowitz, had completed the raising of $300 million for a new venture fund.</p>
<p>And, indeed, the new firm&#8211;which is made up of just the two of them&#8211;is now launched and called Andreessen Horowitz. It has $50 million over the $250 million the pair had initially planned.</p>
<p>In an interview with me last week, Andreessen said that unlike many VC firms, Andreessen Horowitz will invest in companies at any stage of life&#8211;from early stage to late&#8211;and of any size and in any kind of digital sector.</p>
<p>That will mean about 60 to 80 seed investments, 15 that need following rounds and two to three late-stage companies.</p>
<p>In addition, the firm is able to take large equity stakes in public companies.</p>
<p>&#8220;We are unafraid of investing in 400 people instead of 40 people,&#8221; said Andreessen. &#8220;And we could invest $50,000 to $50,000,000.&#8221;</p>
<p>He noted the new firm would aim for areas the founders were more familiar with, such as the consumer Internet and mobile.</p>
<p>One certainty, though, was that the firm would focus on companies led by tech-savvy founders.</p>
<p>&#8220;We believe in entrepreneurs and those who live and breathe the tech product that they have created,&#8221; said Andreessen.</p>
<p>Andreessen said several major institutional investors&#8211;universities, for example&#8211;have invested large chunks in the fund, while a spate of tech luminaries has put in smaller amounts.</p>
<p>The quick completion of the fund raising, in the midst of a national econalypse, is a good sign. But the reputation of both longtime entrepreneurs seems to have helped.</p>
<p>Andreessen co-founded Netscape&#8211;the iconic browser company that was key to introducing the modern Internet to consumers in Web 1.0&#8211;and a lot of other start-ups.</p>
<p>He has also morphed into a mentor to many Web 2.0 entrepreneurs.</p>
<p>Andreessen made news when he <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090220/marc-andreessens-new-venture-fund-project-a">announced on the &#8220;Charlie Rose&#8221; television show in February</a> that he was creating the new fund.</p>
<p>&#8220;For the first time in my life, I am crossing over into the dark side,” said Andreessen at the time, in a joke about VCs being like Darth Vader.</p>
<p>Andreessen said he was essentially professionalizing the active angel investing that he and Horowitz had been doing.</p>
<p>Over the last several years, either together or apart, the pair have invested in a large variety of start-ups, such as Twitter, Aliph, Digg, LinkedIn and many more.</p>
<p>Andreessen is on the board of Facebook and an adviser to Twitter too.</p>
<p>Now, as a VC, he is upping the ante. &#8220;It&#8217;s important to have more capital,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Sometimes having a huge checkbook is a great thing.&#8221;</p>
<p>But, more important, he said, was to develop a knack for investing in successful companies with a fearlessness he said he learned from well-known VC John Doerr.</p>
<p>&#8220;John is always swinging for the fences,&#8221; said Andreessen. &#8220;I want to get into a cycle of backing radical ideas.&#8221;</p>

<p>Incredibly, this is the <a href="http://d7.allthingsd.com">seventh year of the <strong>D: All Things Digital</strong> conference</a>.</p>
<p>We feel <em>very</em> lucky to get here, especially in the midst of what our own site&#8217;s <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com">Digital Daily scribe, John Paczkowski</a>, has so perfectly dubbed the <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/category/econalypse/">&#8220;econalypse.&#8221;</a></p>
<p>Ironically, <a href="http://walt.allthingsd.com">Walt Mossberg</a> and I planned to launch the very first conference in the middle of the last major downturn for tech, in 2001. But, in the carnage of the Web 1.0 meltdown, we actually held off for two years, with our first <strong>D</strong> gathering taking place in 2003.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s been a real winning streak since then for <strong>D</strong>, due in large part to our great speakers&#8211;such as Microsoft (MSFT) icon Bill Gates and Apple (AAPL) legend Steve Jobs.</p>

<p>But, like the digital industry and the innovation our conference focuses on, we also like to lean forward to try to figure out what the Next Big Thing is around the corner, whether it comes from Silicon Valley or not.</p>

<p>That&#8217;s why we&#8217;re kicking off our conference on May 26 with two of the founders of Twitter&#8211;Biz Stone and Evan Williams&#8211;who are riding high on tech&#8217;s latest hot thing, which might turn out to be either a rocket ship or a shooting star.</p>
<p>They&#8217;ll be followed up over the next two days by a plethora of interesting players, from the leaders of several major mobile companies to content execs hit hard by fast-moving digital forces to a new Internet leader like Yahoo (YHOO) CEO Carol Bartz, who is trying to turn around one of the Web&#8217;s great icons from its more recent lackluster path.</p>
<p>And, as we always do, we will be featuring a spate of demos too, trying to see if we can unearth that next <em>next</em> thing.</p>
<p>In the past, the <strong>D</strong> stage has seen the debut of start-up products like Sling Media&#8217;s Slingbox, Aliph&#8217;s Jawbone and Pure Digital&#8217;s Flip, all of which have gone onto glory. And also some, like Palm&#8217;s Foleo, which did not.</p>
<p>While not everyone can attend <strong>D</strong>, our crack staff is committed to bringing all the action from this year&#8217;s conference to readers of the <strong>All Things Digital</strong> site via up-to-the-minute blogs, photos, videos, tweets, digs and more. <p>Wireless cellphone earpieces can make people look faintly ridiculous as they stroll down the street or around the office, seemingly talking to themselves with ugly appendages sprouting from their heads. The pulsing blue lights on these things can make people look like robots. And these battery-powered gadgets, which use a power-hungry wireless technology called Bluetooth, are just one more thing to charge.</p>

<p>But such headsets are becoming more necessary, at least in the car. A growing number of cities and states are requiring all calls made while driving be conducted in a &#8220;hands-free&#8221; manner. Two more big states, California and Washington, will begin enforcing such laws in July. Unless drivers in these places have cars with costly built-in Bluetooth speakers and microphones, many will turn to wireless earpieces to make calls legally.</p>
<p>Now, two of the most important wireless earpiece makers are bringing out new models that attempt to make their products more attractive and functional. One is a new version of the Jawbone, which has become a leader in the high-priced end of the market. The other is a new model from <a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=plt'>Plantronics</a> (PLT), which vies with Motorola (MOT) as the top seller of wireless earpieces.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ve been testing both the new $130 Jawbone, and the $150 Plantronics Discovery 925, and both work well, despite some drawbacks. Each worked properly with both an inexpensive Motorola Razr phone from Verizon (VZ) and a sophisticated Apple (AAPL) iPhone from AT&amp;T (T). But I preferred the Jawbone, because of its technology and design.</p>
<p>The new Jawbone, made by a closely held San Francisco company called Aliph, is 50% smaller than the original Jawbone, which I reviewed in 2006. It continues to boast the original Jawbone&#8217;s signature feature: a remarkable ability to suppress background noise and isolate the wearer&#8217;s voice.</p>
<p>Jawbone performs this feat by using a sensor that touches your skin lightly to identify your voice through the vibration of the bones in your face. Using this information, its microphone can more easily distinguish your voice from background noise, and accurately suppress the latter.</p>
<p>This feature, originally called &#8220;Noise Shield&#8221; and now theatrically renamed &#8220;Noise Assassin,&#8221; really works. When the company first showed off the original Jawbone, it made live calls standing in front of things like weed whackers and boom boxes, and then turned the bone-sensing feature on and off to show the dramatic difference.</p>

<p>In my tests of the new, much smaller Jawbone, I stood a few feet from a roaring vacuum cleaner, while on a phone call. The person I was calling could barely hear me with Noise Assassin turned off, but could clearly make me out when I turned it on.</p>
<p>By contrast, the Plantronics Discovery failed my noise test. It was useless anywhere near the vacuum cleaner. This was obviously an extreme case, but it served as a stand-in for other loud noises likely to be encountered in real life, like large trucks, or construction gear on the streets.</p>
<p>The biggest flaw in the original Jawbone, in my 2006 tests, was its performance in wind, which was poor. The Jawbone did much better in my latest tests. During a Jawbone call from a car with all the windows down and the sunroof open, my voice was easy to make out, according to the person I was calling. The new Plantronics earpiece did just as well in this wind test.</p>
<p>Plantronics claims its headset also enhances the voice of the person you are calling, a claim Aliph doesn&#8217;t make for the Jawbone. But, while voices sounded fine on the Plantronics, I couldn&#8217;t detect any difference between the two on that score.</p>
<p>Both gadgets are meant to be more stylish, and both will be available in multiple colors. But, while the Jawbone is just a smaller iteration of its original slab-like form, Plantronics has done something more radical with the Discovery 925: It has tried to make it look like jewelry. The Discovery&#8217;s electronics are housed in the diamond-shaped portion of the device that goes on the ear, and the microphone sits at the end of a long, V-shaped boom that is open in the center. Plantronics says the design is suitable for both genders, but admits it is a bit more aimed at women and at fashion-conscious men.</p>
<p>I believe some men wouldn&#8217;t feel comfortable wearing this new Plantronics model. It&#8217;s also longer than the Jawbone. But I did find it more comfortable to wear, since it doesn&#8217;t protrude as much into the ear.</p>
<p>The Plantronics claims longer talk time &#8212; five hours vs. four hours for the Jawbone, but the Jawbone claims longer standby time &#8212; eight days, vs. seven days for the Plantronics. The Jawbone weighs more, at 10 grams, compared with 8 grams for the Plantronics, but neither felt heavy on my ear.</p>
<p>I did prefer the Plantronics&#8217; controls over the Jawbone&#8217;s. The former uses obvious buttons, while the latter employs unmarked, hidden buttons whose location you have to learn by touch.</p>
<p>Both of these earpieces do the job, but if you have to choose one, I&#8217;d pick the Jawbone.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Wireless earphones are becoming quite common. You often see cellphone users walking down the street with the alien-like appendages protruding from an ear. And even in the world of iPods, where the famous white earbud cord still rules, a half-dozen or more wireless headphones have been introduced.</p>
<p>But there are problems with going cord-free. In the case of cellphone wireless headsets, loud street and crowd noises make it hard to hear. And the wireless iPod headphones have been big, bulky units of unremarkable audio quality.</p>
<p>Now, some wireless earphones address those problems. For cellphones, a new wireless headset called Jawbone promises to filter out all that background noise. For iPods, new wireless earphones called Ety8 promise to bring small size and great sound quality to the wireless category. Both products use Bluetooth wireless technology to transmit audio from the device to the ear.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ve been testing these two new products and have found that each lives up to its claims. Both are advances that have real advantages over the more standard cord-free competitors. But each also has some drawbacks that might deter some folks from using them.</p>
<p>The wireless Jawbone is a sleek, futuristic-looking gadget made by a small San Francisco company called Aliph. It will be sold, starting Dec. 21, for $120 by Cingular Wireless. The earphone will work with any Bluetooth cellphone, not just those on Cingular&#8217;s network. Aliph will also sell the new Jawbone on its Web site, <a href="http://www.jawbone.com" rel="external">www.jawbone.com</a>. The Cingular model will be silver colored. Aliph will offer it in red and black, too.</p>
<p>What makes jawbone special is its noise-cancellation feature, called Noise Shield. You can stand in front of a blaring boom box or a weed whacker with a Jawbone, and its technology, derived from military research, will almost entirely obliterate that background noise. You can also hear the other party better.</p>

<p>This effect is achieved through multiple small, built-in microphones, including one that rests against your cheek, detecting the vibration of your voice through the bones in your face. The gadget uses that reading to help identify and cancel all other sound that isn&#8217;t your voice.</p>
<p>In my tests, on a Palm Treo from Verizon and a Samsung Blackjack from Cingular, the Jawbone worked well. On a downtown street, it silenced the sound of traffic and crowd noise. In an office, it blocked out loud music only a few inches away. The noise cancellation is far better than on any other cellphone headset I&#8217;ve tried. Battery life is up to a decent six hours.</p>
<p>But there are two downsides to the new Jawbone. First, it can&#8217;t defeat wind. Even a mild breeze made Jawbone calls noisy. Second, it has some user-interface problems. The same button that turns the Noise Shield on and off also raises and lowers the volume, and the beeps of the two are hard to distinguish. I also found it hard to get a comfortable fit, though the unit comes with multiple behind-the-ear loops and rubber earbuds.</p>
<p>If you&#8217;re an iPod lover, the Ety8 wireless earphones may be just the thing to replace those trademark white earbud cords. Unlike other cordless iPod earphones, the Ety8s aren&#8217;t large, over-the-ear headphones. They&#8217;re light, in-ear earbuds. They&#8217;re made by Etymotic Research of Elk Grove Village, Ill., a high-end audio company whose wired earphones are highly praised.</p>
<p>The Ety8 earphones cost $300 from the company&#8217;s site, <a href="http://www.etymotic.com" rel="external">www.etymotic.com</a>. That includes the headphones and a small adapter that plugs into the iPod to give it wireless capability. You can also use the earphones with other devices with wireless capability built in. For that, you can buy earphones without the adapter for $200.</p>

<p>Like some other high-end earphones, from Etymotic and from competitors like Shure, the Ety8s are meant to go deep into the ear, and come with rubber and foam tips for a snug fit.</p>
<p>The Ety8 also has tiny buttons on the right earpiece to wirelessly control the iPod. You can adjust the volume, play or pause music, or skip ahead or back &#8212; all without touching the iPod, which can be 20 or 30 feet away.</p>
<p>They work with the current full-size iPods, the previous generation of full-size iPods, and iPod Nano and Mini models. Battery life is six to nine hours. The adapter draws power from the iPod&#8217;s battery, so it will also reduce the battery life of the iPod itself.</p>
<p>In my tests, the Ety8 earphones worked great, both on a new full-size iPod and on an older iPod Mini. They produced excellent sound and were comfortable to wear, once I got used to a cloth-wrapped cord that connects the two earpieces and is meant to be draped behind your neck.</p>
<p>The big downside of the Ety8 is this: They are ugly. They are relatively large, black rectangles that look like matchbooks pasted onto your ears. If you can get over that, the Ety8 wireless earphones for the iPod are great.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>It&#8217;s a confusing time for computer buyers, and that makes this annual spring buyer&#8217;s guide to desktop computers harder to write than usual. Microsoft&#8217;s Windows XP operating system is in its last months of primacy, yet the company still hasn&#8217;t issued final guidelines for the hardware you&#8217;ll need to run Windows Vista, its successor, which is due in January.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, Apple Computer is in the process of revamping its entire Macintosh line to run on Intel chips. It has now made it possible for the newest Macs to run Windows as well as the Mac OS X operating system, so you can buy one machine for both worlds.</p>
<p>I believe every mainstream consumer doing typical tasks should consider the Mac. Its operating system already contains most of the key features promised for Vista. However, the Mac doesn&#8217;t really need a buyer&#8217;s guide. It has only two consumer desktop models &#8212; the gorgeous iMac and the low-end Mac Mini.</p>

<p>So, as I did in my last guide last fall, I&#8217;m going to direct this one at people shopping for standard Windows desktops who would like to buy one now that could be upgraded to Vista later. Despite the lack of final hardware specs for Vista, Microsoft has put out some new information, and I have been talking to sources there to glean further details. These specs also apply to laptops.</p>
<p>If you want a new Windows PC, my best advice is to wait until January and buy one with Vista preinstalled. If you can&#8217;t wait till then, you&#8217;ll still have a good chance of upgrading to Vista if you follow these guidelines.</p>
<p>There&#8217;s a problem, though. Running Vista with all its features enabled will require a major increase in hardware power, and that means a costlier PC. So Microsoft is essentially taking a two-tier approach to the hardware specs. To soothe PC makers who want to offer low price tags on some models, it is quoting lower specs that it says will allow running Vista in a sort of stripped-down mode. The company is also offering higher specs for running Vista as it was designed, with all features turned on.</p>
<p>The main difference between these two tiers is graphics performance and look and feel. If you have a computer with the weaker specs, Vista will still give you enhanced security and built-in desktop search. But you won&#8217;t get the dramatic new graphical look and feel that makes Vista look more like the Mac OS. Your computer will look like an evolved version of Windows XP, and it will probably run only the wimpiest edition of Vista, called Home Basic.</p>
<p>Vista performance will depend on how much memory your PC has and what sort of graphics hardware it contains. If you have enough memory and good enough graphics hardware to meet the top-tier specs, you will likely be able to run the Home Premium and Ultimate editions of Vista.</p>
<p>Some computers will carry &#8220;Vista Capable&#8221; stickers, and Microsoft has a Web page on Vista-capable hardware specs at <a href="http://www.microsoft.com/technet/windowsvista/evaluate/hardware/vistarpc.mspx" rel="external">www.microsoft.com/technet/windowsvista/evaluate/hardware/vistarpc.mspx</a>. But be careful. Some &#8220;Vista-capable&#8221; machines, especially those under $600, may run Vista only in stripped-down mode.</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Memory:</strong> Microsoft suggests 512 megabytes of memory, or RAM, for stripped-down Vista, and it will probably recommend one gigabyte of memory for full Vista. But based on experience with the company&#8217;s guidelines, I strongly suggest doubling those amounts. Even on a cheap machine, I&#8217;d get one gigabyte of memory, and if you want to run Vista with all its features, I suggest two gigabytes.</li>
<li><strong>Video:</strong> Stripped-down Vista can run on any graphics hardware that can support what&#8217;s called SVGA, or a resolution of 800 by 600. The hardware should also support a Microsoft technology called DirectX 9. This includes many integrated graphics systems, which do away with a separate video card in favor of graphics chips bolted to the mother board.</li>
</ul>
<p>Full Vista will be best with a separate, or &#8220;discrete,&#8221; graphics card that has at least 128 megabytes of dedicated video memory. These cards also need support for DirectX 9. In addition, however, they must also support Microsoft software called &#8220;WDDM&#8221; and &#8220;Pixel Shader 2.&#8221; If your eyes are rolling right now, don&#8217;t fret. Microsoft officials say nearly all discrete graphics cards on the market today meet these specs, as will the latest integrated graphics systems, such as Intel chip sets labeled 945 or higher.</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Processor:</strong> For stripped-down Vista, a processor running at 800 megahertz or faster should be sufficient, according to Microsoft. For full Vista, the speed rises to one gigahertz. I&#8217;d edge higher if your budget allows, but you don&#8217;t need the fastest processor.</li>
<li><strong>Hard disk:</strong> Disk storage is already copious enough for Vista, and buying large amounts is cheap. For stripped-down Vista, I&#8217;d go for at least 60 gigabytes of hard-disk space. For full Vista, I&#8217;d boost that to 160 gigabytes, to accommodate lots of music and video.</li>
</ul>
