<p>Among his picks: Tangle-resistant ear buds; an Apple iPhone beer-bottle opener and consumption tabulator; a wireless USB drive; and the latest Ultrabooks to compete with the MacBook Air.</p>

<p>Here&#8217;s another interesting wrinkle to the <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110902/crunchfund-unethical-ventures-pigpile-partners-no-matter-what-you-call-it-its-business-as-usual-in-silicon-valley/">ongoing saga</a> of AOL, TechCrunch founder Michael Arrington and his nascent venture firm, CrunchFund.</p>
<p>Since the controversy erupted last week, Arrington has reached out to AOL CEO Tim Armstrong, as well as others in Silicon Valley, about buying back his popular tech news site.</p>
<p>Sources said Arrington needs funding to do so &#8212; <em>irony alert!</em> &#8212; and told them over the weekend that he planned to use his blogging bully pulpit to force AOL into giving up the site it <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20100928/youve-got-mail-mike-arrington-aol-buys-techcrunch/">bought for more than $25 million</a> almost exactly a year ago.</p>
<p>But sources said &#8212; at this point &#8212; AOL is not inclined to sell the site, which has prompted Arrington to pen a <a href="http://techcrunch.com/2011/09/06/editorial-independence/">blog post</a> on TechCrunch, not-meant-as-a-joke-titled &#8220;Editorial Independence,&#8221; suggesting they do so.</p>
<p><em>Quelle surprise!</em></p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>We&#8217;ve proposed two options to Aol.</p>
<p>1. Reaffirmation of the editorial independence promised at the time of acquisition. Given the current circumstances, that means autonomy from Huffington Post, unfettered editorial independence and a blanket right to editorial self determination. To put it simply, TechCrunch would stay with Aol but would be independent of the Huffington Post.</p>
<p>or</p>
<p>2. Sell TechCrunch back to the original shareholders.</p></blockquote>
<p>Arrington used an image of the Spartans from, I think, the movie &#8220;300,&#8221; on the post. Memo to Mike: All the Spartans died in the end, however valiant. It goes without saying &#8212; this situation is not valiant and you are <em>definitely</em> not King Leonidas.</p>
<p>&#8220;It is at a stalemate, so this is the result,&#8221; said one person with knowledge of the pugnacious effort by Arrington to take back his baby.</p>
<p>Which, of course, he sold in the first place.</p>
<p>AOL has stated it will not allow Arrington to remain its editor or have <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110902/mike-arrington-aol-employee-wont-have-influence-on-coverage-says-aol/">&#8220;influence on coverage&#8221;</a> while also doing a venture fund.</p>
<p>Thus, some of Arrington&#8217;s staffers, such as <a href="http://techcrunch.com/2011/09/06/the-end/">M.G. Siegler</a>, have already been plowing the ground ahead of Arrington&#8217;s post.</p>
<p>Siegler, for example, penned a weepy diatribe about how unfair it all is and how different the site operates from slow-footed meanies at big media organizations such as the New York Times. The Times strafed Arrington in a David Carr column yesterday.</p>
<p>Wrote Siegler, in what can only be described as soap-opera <em>fantastic</em>: &#8220;TechCrunch is on the precipice. As soon as tomorrow, Mike may be thrown out of the company he founded. Or he may not. No one knows.&#8221;</p>
<p>Tune in tomorrow to see if AOL&#8217;s content chief and Arrington boss Arianna Huffington will use that gun in her pocket. Or will she use the razor-chiseled cheekbones of Armstrong to slice her new nemesis?</p>
<p>(<a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110903/viral-video-me-and-my-crunchfund-shadow-on-bloomberg-west/">Alls I can say to add to what I have already said</a>, at this point: <em>Good lord.</em> But, wait, isn&#8217;t there a TechCrunch Disrupt conference next week to hawk and make it all about Arrington and not the entrepreneurs? This explains everything!)</p>
<p>While Siegler is trying to make it all sound as if it is so very unfair, since the site is presumably so very special, <strong>AllThingsD</strong> operates in a similar quick-edit way to TechCrunch &#8212; where I will underscore there are some terrific journalists.</p>
<p>But &#8212; because it is simply flat-out wrong on every possible scale &#8212; neither Walt Mossberg nor I would ever consider being editors of the site while also running a venture fund.</p>
<p>(In fact, it is now a standing rule at <strong>ATD</strong> that, if we ever did such an unthinkable thing &#8212; which of course we never would &#8212; our writers tell us we stink rather than praise us.)</p>
<p>Meanwhile, we&#8217;ll be busy breaking some actual tech news on this site, like <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110906/google-goes-big-with-its-hulu-bid/">here</a> and <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110906/as-yahoo-continues-to-wobble-investors-and-board-eye-options/">here</a> and <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110906/exclusive-longtime-yahoo-front-page-editor-liz-lufkin-out/">here</a>, while TechCrunch presumably faux-burns and AOL fiddles.</p>

<p><em>Yes</em>, this is <strong>AllThingsD</strong>.</p>
<p>A whole new redesign of <strong>AllThingsD</strong>, that is. </p>
<p>The new look is the third since we launched the site in April of 2007 and&#8211;<em>trust us</em>&#8211;we think you&#8217;ll like it a lot better.</p>
<p>There are a lot of reasons for a redo of any site.</p>
<p>In this case, there are many&#8211;from wanting to keep it fresh to figuring out a better way to feature the incredible journalism of our many new reporters who have come on board in the last six months to trying to give the reader a more visual experience and much improved navigation.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s a good thing, since the site has been bursting at the seams for a while now, as we have steadily and dramatically increased the number of stories we post every day.</p>
<p>So naturally, we&#8217;re pretty excited to launch a redesign today that enables us to better display the depth and breadth of our coverage and to showcase the talent behind it. </p>
<p>And, after months of kibitzing with our longtime and most excellent designers at Mule Design in San Francisco, we think we have done that and more.</p>
<p>Some major deets: </p>
<p><strong>BOOMTOWN IS DEAD, LONG LIVE ALLTHINGSD:</strong></p>

<p>As you will see, in the new set-up, all blog posts belong to <strong>AllThingsD</strong> and no longer operate under a variety of column names.</p>
<p>We thought long and hard about this change, which entailed moving all the content from the various blogs under the single <strong>AllThingsD.com</strong> moniker.</p>
<p>This will make everything look more cohesive from a branding standpoint. We&#8217;re <strong>AllThingsD</strong> now, and not the blogging nation states of BoomTown, Digital Daily, MediaMemo, Mobilized, NetworkEffect, eMoney and NewEnterprise.</p>
<p>While we liked all those pretty names, it&#8217;s become clear that it&#8217;s gotten a little confusing to readers that we are one single news organization. </p>
<p>Thus, as hard as it is for me personally&#8211;I have been writing under the BoomTown name since before there was a Google&#8211;out they go. </p>
<p><strong>CONTEXT IS KING:</strong></p>
<p>One big focus: More contextually relevant opportunities to view our content! </p>
<p>Real people translation: All of our content is now categorized under the list of topics that runs across the top of the site, which are News, Reviews, Mobile, Media, Social, Enterprise and Commerce.</p>
<p>These lead to dynamically-generated category pages. Since our coverage is rarely confined to just one of those, any given post or column will probably appear under more than one category. </p>
<p>Of course, there are rabid Peter Kafka fans, as well as those who cannot live without a daily dose of Ina Fried. Luckily, you can still view posts by writer by using the convenient &#8220;view by writer&#8221; link at the far right of the navigation bar.</p>
<p>And if that&#8217;s not enough context for you, the content on display can be further filtered by the most popular tags of the previous 30 days by clicking on &#8220;Trending Tags&#8221; on any category page or &#8220;Kara (or any other writer) by Topic&#8221; on any writer&#8217;s page.</p>
<p><strong>BIG AND BEAUTIFUL:</strong></p>

<p>As you can see, <strong>All Things D</strong> now has a wider layout and a better ability to display videos, photos and embedded documents.</p>
<p>The new wider layout is better suited to big, bold graphics and videos. All of our videos will now be streaming to you at 640&#215;360, and while we&#8217;re not giving up on LOLcats any time soon, they will be coming to you at a much higher resolution, and they will occasionally be augmented by professional photojournalism from Getty Images and other services.</p>
<p>But fear not: <strong>AllThingsD</strong>&#8216;s epic Photoshops&#8211;such as the recent Skype-tastic image of Microsoft&#8217;s Steve Ballmer above&#8211;will continue unabated. </p>
<p><strong>LOOK AT THE PRETTY BOXES:</strong></p>
<p>On the new <strong>AllThingsD</strong> site, we&#8217;re no longer confined to bringing you our content in a chronologically reversed river of posts.</p>
<p>Of course, that&#8217;s still available if you scroll down to &#8220;Today&#8217;s Posts,&#8221; and you can even filter that view by clicking on any of the writers to the left.</p>
<p>Our new featured content box at the top of the homepage gives us the latitude to highlight the most important stories as well, and to give them the prominence, longevity and visual impact they warrant. </p>
<p>We&#8217;re sure you have a lot more questions and it will take some getting used to the new look. So, the whole staff at <strong>All Things D</strong> is here for you with any questions, comments and, of course, complaints.</p>

<p>Would it surprise you to know that BoomTown doesn&#8217;t really care anymore if TechCrunch editor Michael Arrington sidelines as a blogger while he makes investments in tech companies his tech news site covers?</p>
<p>In a post yesterday, titled <a href="http://techcrunch.com/2011/04/27/an-update-to-my-investment-policy/">&#8220;An Update to My Investment Policy,&#8221;</a> Arrington made his seemingly cogent arguments that plenty of disclosure made it all &#8220;fine,&#8221; took one of his typical look-at-me swipes at anyone who dared to question this logic (apparently, we&#8217;re crappy &#8220;direct&#8221; competitors, so we haters have no standing to comment!) and presumably went on his merry investing way.</p>
<p>While I was first irked&#8211;because it was an appalling show to many of us cranky standards-insisting whiners&#8211;I soon realized Arrington had made a good argument about who he is and, frankly, who he has always been.</p>
<p>In other words, it&#8217;s a kind of there-he-goes-again thing, vaguely icky but hardly surprising and completely genuine.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, his new boss, AOL content head Arianna Huffington, pointed me to his post in an email.</p>
<p>When I asked her for an on-the-record comment, as usual, she politely and quickly complied, writing in support of Arrington:</p>
<p>&#8220;TechCrunch is committed to transparency. Michael has written about the guidelines he follows&#8211;that he rarely writes about companies in which he is an investor, and that, when he does, he clearly discloses this information. The same rules apply when TechCrunch’s writers cover these companies.&#8221;</p>
<p><em>Hold the phone.</em></p>
<p>Because while I kind of understand where Arrington is coming from, what I don&#8217;t understand is how this kind of convenient and on-the-fly rule-making can govern a much larger company whose strongly and repeatedly stated goal by Huffington herself is to create quality journalism.</p>
<p>Since I believed Huffington&#8211;whom I like very much as an Internet figure and as a friend&#8211;I was confused at what the rules for the whole of AOL content were now.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s why I sent her a long new list of questions to answer, which are:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>1) What are, if any, the ethical guidelines about making investments for the editorial staff at HuffPo media group properties?</p>
<p>2) Since Arrington now seems to have permission to do so from you, can other editors at AOL properties do the same&#8211;that is, make very adjacent investments to what their site covers, as long as they disclose it? For example, can an editor who runs the entertainment site make investments in entertainment companies she/he has coverage responsibility over? (By the way, did you give him permission to make these investments? Did he ask?)</p>
<p>3) Is there anyone who polices what is fair coverage of competitors&#8211;i.e. companies competing with companies your editors invest in?</p>
<p>4) If an editor makes investments in a company and someone who works for them writes about that company, does that editor have to recuse himself from the story? Is that even possible?</p>
<p>5) Since you just fired someone for what you called an ethical breach&#8211;asking freelancers to work for free and also seemingly defending an attempt to curry favor with an advertiser/client&#8211;why is this not an ethical breach?</p></blockquote>
<p>I had a lot more questions, still unanswered by Huffington, but you can see where this is going.</p>
<p>Simply put, does AOL, which is touting itself as a 21st-century media company, need to have 21st-century rules of the road? Or perhaps not so much?</p>
<p><strong>UPDATE:</strong> Now, it is a real clown circus at AOL, with the company declaring that editorial personnel cannot make investments, <em>except Arrington</em>!</p>
<p>&#8220;As a rule, in order to avoid conflicts of interests, AOL Huffington Post Media Group editors, writers, and reporters may not have a financial interest in a company or industry that they regularly cover,&#8221; AOL said in a statement to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/aol-says-reporters-are-not-allowed-to-invest-in-companies-they-cover-except-michael-arrington-2011-4#ixzz1KqjAqGPL">Business Insider today</a>, even though I nicely asked for a comment on the issue yesterday. &#8220;Arrington operates from a unique position.&#8221;</p>
<p><em>And how!</em> Where do I get such a faboo ethical hall pass from Content Principal Huffington?</p>
<p>I suppose I should go all slouching-towards-Bethlehem here,  and wring my hands over this unusual ruling, but what&#8217;s the use?</p>
<p>As you might have read: &#8220;The best lack all conviction, while the worst are full of passionate intensity.&#8221;</p>
<p>How did this all start, especially since I feel like this ridiculous tempest in a Silicon Valley teapot over Arrington&#8217;s investment-making might actually be my fault a little bit?</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s why:</p>
<p>On Tuesday night around 10 pm (just when I start getting revved up), I wrote a testy email to Arrington&#8217;s bosses at AOL&#8211;Huffington and CEO Tim Armstrong&#8211;as well as the Internet portal&#8217;s sharp PR head, asking for a response about what seemed to me to be a glaring conflict of interest at TechCrunch related to new investment activity by Arrington and the site&#8217;s coverage of those particular companies he had invested in.</p>
<p>It was all disclosed, of course, but it still felt, as I said, <em>icky</em>.</p>
<p>And, given the recent and loudly stated goal of promoting quality journalism by Huffington&#8211;including the recent dismissal of AOL&#8217;s Moviefone site editor over what the company considered ethical lapses&#8211;it seemed pertinent to ask.</p>
<p>Mostly because I don&#8217;t think they actually knew much&#8211;if at all&#8211;about Arrington&#8217;s increasing investing action. Armstrong said as much in an email to me, and Huffington assured me they were going to check it out tout de suite.</p>
<p>But rather than the answer I was waiting on, up popped Arrington&#8217;s missive yesterday, which I assume came after his bosses asked for some info on this.</p>
<p>In it, he explained his controversial decision to go back into investing again, in what is clearly a more significant manner.</p>
<p>It was a practice he had abandoned years earlier, apparently after being pecked by detractors for it.</p>
<p><em>But, dear readers, no more! Let Arrington be Arrington!</em></p>
<p>And that seems to be a talented blogger with a flare for the dramatic, with a clearly sharply-honed news nose and sassy writing skills, but a scribe who much prefers to be a <em>playah</em> than just an observer and chronicler of that play.</p>
<p>And, after more reflection, I thought: Well, maybe it is a better idea for Arrington to go play with all the boys in Silicon Valley, which would probably be more fun than taking flack for lack of traditional journalistic ethics he never ascribed to in the first place.</p>

<p>I once jokingly <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20081218/techcrunchs-yertle-the-turtle-tantrum-over-news-embargoes">nicknamed Arrington Yertle the Turtle</a> after the Dr. Seuss book on one dubious king of one small pond in Sala-Ma-Sond, after he went particularly nuts on the topic of news-embargo breaking.</p>
<p>That diatribe on how he saw news rules&#8211;which is to say, there aren&#8217;t any that bind him&#8211;was vintage Arrington, too. And, after reading his latest post, I suddenly realized that it&#8217;s pointless to give a turtle a hard time for not being a fish.</p>
<p>But Huffington is another story. She has put herself in word and deed right into the center of the debate on where news is going on the Web, especially after <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110206/youve-got-arianna-aol-buys-huffington-post-for-315-million-in-cash">AOL paid $315 million for her Huffington Post</a> news and opinion site.</p>
<p>Huffington has certainly taken a lot of hits over the years as the HuffPo has grown, some deserved, but she has clearly led an impressive effort.</p>
<p>In fact, I think the cute-kitten and celebrity-loving angle played up by her detractors to dismiss her is silliness, because she and the Huffington Post are clearly more than that and are obviously having a major impact on the future direction of content in the digital age.</p>
<p>But that power she has sought also gives her a responsibility to say exactly what that means on a real and granular and consistent level, beyond the platitudes of wanting to make great journalism that she declares all the time now.</p>
<p>In other words, very specifically: What does Arianna Huffington stand for in regards to journalism? What are her rules and standards and codes? And, perhaps more importantly, what does she <em>not</em> stand up for?</p>
<p>These are questions I hope Huffington&#8211;who is really good at smacking back at criticism, too (See: the <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20110310/arianna-huffington-to-bill-keller-who-you-calling-oxpecker">New York Times&#8217; Bill Keller</a>)&#8211;will address in one of her patented blog-xplosions and many times over, too.</p>
<p>Until then, here&#8217;s a link to <a href="http://allthingsd.com/about/kara-swisher/ethics/">my very long and very detailed ethics disclosure</a> on <strong>All Things Digital</strong>, which is exactly how our little site thinks it should be in the digital age.</p>
<p>In short, besides signing the <a href="http://www.dowjones.com/codeconduct.asp">Dow Jones Code of Conduct</a>&#8211;standard at The Wall Street Journal and other DJ publications&#8211;all our editorial staff is required to also pen their own in-plain-English personal and detailed account of disclosures that are pertinent to their job.</p>

<p>My <strong>ATD</strong> disclosure is probably the most detailed of all of them, since I gay-married Megan Smith a dozen years ago. She later became a VP at Google, which I cover from time to time, especially related to other companies I focus on more, such as Yahoo.</p>
<p>Most of the time, if you care to read my posts on Google, I am probably tougher and snarkier than not, mostly because I know the search giant from its earliest days.</p>
<p>And, even though I once wrote extensively for the Journal about Google since its founding and before Megan arrived there, I thought it wise to lay it all out in detailed detail.</p>
<p>(By the way, if you want to try to tweak me by asking what News Corp.-owned Fox News&#8217; ethics rules are, I don&#8217;t know, as <strong>ATD</strong> belongs to Dow Jones, which has had them forever. I will say, though, that Roger Ailes often freaks me out.)</p>
<p>In any case, as Arrington preaches, the more disclosure the better, and perhaps I should say even more so here, given the current swirl, by noting explicitly that I garner exactly <em>no</em> financial benefits from my relationship with Megan.</p>
<p>That might seem odd, because she certainly earns more. But I don&#8217;t know how much nor do I ask, since we have separate bank accounts and she always pays up&#8211;well, <em>almost</em> always&#8211;when half the bills are due. While it sounds painfully un-romantic, we only spend overall what each of us can afford equally in an exact 50-50 split.</p>

<p>In addition, I also legally signed away all rights to inheritance&#8211;although I had no such marriage rights in the first place, being gay&#8211;of Megan&#8217;s assets, which are in a trust for her relatives and our sons (for when they are too old to have any fun).</p>
<p>More to the point, I believe this makes me the only person to marry an exec at a hot Silicon Valley company with no prospect of any gold-digging.</p>
<p>Thus, I clearly would make the worst investor <em>ever</em>&#8211;not that I ever invest in tech or plan to while I am a reporter covering the sector.</p>
<p>Thank god, I suppose, that Michael Arrington is there to take up the slack.</p>

<p>On some level of journalism, I guess anything <em>could</em> happen.</p>
<p>At least that&#8217;s according to a recent article by Business Insider&#8217;s Henry Blodget about an alleged &#8220;mole&#8221; at Twitter who was allegedly spying for Google, specifically about an exec the microblogging service was trying to poach from the Silicon Valley search giant.</p>
<p>In a decidedly splashy, hello-traffic, ALL-CAPs headline&#8211;<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/twitter-mole-john-doerr-2011-4?op=1">THE SEARCH FOR THE &#8220;TWITTER MOLE&#8221;: All Eyes On John Doerr</a>&#8220;&#8211;Blodget pointed his <em>J&#8217;accuse</em> finger at the legendary venture capitalist as the culprit.</p>
<p><em>Based on&#8230;</em></p>
<p>Well, based on nothing, it appears, except rank speculation and what appears to be no attempt to get Doerr to comment.</p>
<p>And, while it&#8217;s not my cup of tea, <em>whatev</em>, I suppose.</p>
<p>Except when I read down to the bottom and landed on this gem:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>We have talked to several sources familiar with aspects of the situation. Thus far, we have not been able to confirm either assertion.</p>
<p>First, no one has even confirmed that Google was tipped off in advance of Twitter&#8217;s poaching effort, much less by a Twitter mole.</p>
<p>This doesn&#8217;t mean it didn&#8217;t happen.</p></blockquote>
<p>And later still:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>So we haven&#8217;t been able to confirm the &#8220;high-level mole at Twitter&#8221; story. And we think there&#8217;s a good explanation for why there might not be a mole at all.</p>
<p>Secondly, we have talked to no one who has any evidence other than the logic above that, even if there is a Google mole at Twitter, the mole is John Doerr. One insider we spoke to, in fact, dismissed the idea out of hand.</p></blockquote>
<p><em>Say what?</em></p>
<p>It&#8217;s kind of like thinking that a sparkly Civil War-era vampire falling in love with a moody chick in the Pacific Northwest and flying through the pines all day and mooning over their cruel fate was real.</p>
<p>Okay, that was a Hollywood movie called &#8220;Twilight,&#8221; but <em>that doesn&#8217;t mean it didn&#8217;t happen!</em></p>
<p>Thus, Doerr&#8211;a tough customer to be sure, capable of all kinds of sharp-elbowed behavior&#8211;is guilty until proven innocent?</p>
<p>Or just not guilty at all, but let&#8217;s just say he might be anyway, without a shred of evidence, because it <em>could have happened</em>!</p>
<p>(Courtroom confession: It was <strong>All Things Digital</strong>&#8216;s Liz Gannes, who did it <a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/20110114/google-holds-onto-product-vp-sundar-pichai-after-daring-twitter-talent-raid-attempt/">on the blog with scoop</a> on the Twitter talent raid effort of Sundar Pichai!)</p>
<p>Speaking of evidence, less than a week later, Javert&#8211;oops, I mean, Blodget&#8211;was back in another kangaroo court performance with another terrifically loud headline:</p>
<p><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/facebook-lawsuit-paul-ceglia-new-evidence-2011-4#">&#8220;The Guy Who Says He Owns 50% Of Facebook Just Filed A Boatload Of New Evidence&#8211;And It&#8217;s Breathtaking.&#8221;</a></p>
<p>Breathtaking, I guess, if you are in that fantasy teenaged girl mode, but deeply suspect if you are anyone with a modicum of journalistic responsibility.</p>
<p>It is perfectly fine for Blodget to dredge up the copious emails from a man named Paul Ceglia&#8211;who alleges he possesses a contract that he struck with Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg at the time of its creation&#8211;and analyze them.</p>
<p>And it is certainly notable that a credible law firm, DLA Piper, has taken on the case for Ceglia and it does seems unlikely that it would have done so without doing some level of due diligence.</p>
<p>In fact, in an interview with <a href="http://amlawdaily.typepad.com/amlawdaily/2011/04/dlafacebook.html">Am Law Daily</a>, DLA partner Robert Brownlie, international co-chair of the firm&#8217;s securities litigation, said: &#8220;At first I shrugged it off as incredible. I would not have gotten involved and DLA would not have gotten involved if we had any doubts about the facts or evidence in the case.&#8221;</p>
<p>That was, of course, countered by Facebook&#8217;s lawyer Orin Snyder at Gibson, Dunn &#038; Crutcher, who said in a statement that the Ceglia allegations were part of &#8220;a fraudulent lawsuit brought by a convicted felon.&#8221;</p>
<p>By the way, in fancy-lawyer parlance, that translates to a liar-liar-pants-on-fire defense.</p>
<p>So, microwave the popcorn and get ready for the drama, because no question, it is clearly going to be juicy all around with a whole lot of social networking poking!</p>
<p>In fact, such a case is tailor-made for Blodget, who has always been a very gifted writer with a nose for sharp-edged analysis.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s too bad, then, that he did not hone his knife to such an edge when it comes to Ceglia, giving him much too much credibility based on what could be fake emails, especially since they come from a man with a history of fraud.</p>
<p>History, in fact, that Ceglia is depending on in this case, since Zuckerberg most definitely has one in regards to partnerships gone bad.</p>
<p><a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2011/04/imgres-11.jpeg"><img src="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2011/04/imgres-11.jpeg" alt="" title="imgres-1" width="147" height="64" class="alignleft size-full wp-image-42630" /></a></p>
<p>Thus, Zuckerberg has been sneaky before, ergo he&#8217;s sneaky here.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s no surprise as a legal tactic, of course, and I threw in the &#8220;<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ergo">ergo</a>,&#8221; since I too want to play Perry Mason in a blog.</p>
<p>But. More to the point, while Facebook was certainly hard-nosed in dealing with both protracted and high-profile legal challenges from the Winklevoss twins and also Eduardo Severin, I don&#8217;t think I have ever seen the company explicitly say evidence was completely fabricated, as it is alleging Ceglia&#8217;s emails are.</p>
<p>As I said, I have no idea if they are or they&#8217;re not, but I do know this: While those emails are certainly bombshell in nature, they are designed to be so precisely because it is a lawsuit in which the principal is trying to shame Facebook into settling.</p>
<p>None of that seems to concern Blodget, who concludes at the end of the post:</p>
<p>&#8220;In short, to us at least, the emails don&#8217;t read &#8216;fake.&#8217;&#8221;</p>
<p>In short, to me at least, that&#8217;s for fake-email experts and the courts to decide.</p>
<p>The real fact of the matter is, who knows? I certainly don&#8217;t, although I do know it&#8217;s terrifically easy to file a lawsuit and claim just about anything you like.</p>
<p>And the same seems to be true&#8211;more and more these days and not for the good&#8211;for blogs too.</p>
<p>As for me, I need to get back to my goal of proving that sparkly vampires <em>do</em> exist.</p>

<p>Today, BoomTown braved the floods and skippered <strong>All Things Digital</strong>&#8216;s S.S. Minnow through a Noah-like rainstorm in Silicon Valley to visit the HQ of Pulse.</p>
<p>Last summer, you might recall, co-founders Akshay Kothari and Ankit Gupta of the nifty visual news-reading app got <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100608/popular-pulse-news-reader-ipad-app-gets-steve-jobs-praise-in-morning-then-booted-from-app-store-hours-later-after-new-york-times-complaint">publicly picked out by Apple&#8217;s Steve Jobs</a> in a speech about third-party innovations on the iPad.</p>
<p>It was a high point for the pair of Stanford University students and newbie entrepreneurs&#8211;except that the very same day, the New York Times slapped them with a cease and desist for misusing its RSS feed.</p>
<p>Dramatic, for sure, but they have made nice with the Times since then and have also raised more than $1 million in funding from a range of notable venture players.</p>
<p>Compared to a similar start-up&#8211;<a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110323/pretty-flipboard-fundraising-at-an-even-prettier-200-million-valuation/">the social news-reading app Flipboard</a>&#8211;that&#8217;s a very small budget for Pulse, which was making a profit on a paid app but, since it went free in November, it&#8217;s not making a profit now.</p>
<p>The move&#8211;while it will require a new business plan at some point&#8211;allowed Pulse usage to explode, hitting three million users today from 250,000 paid users only four months ago.</p>
<p>A lot of that growth has been on Apple&#8217;s iPhone and Google&#8217;s Android smartphones, rather than on the iPad tablet, where Pulse began.</p>
<p>And, although the Android mobile operating system was the last platform to be introduced, it is the fastest growing one, with over one million users on it, Pulse said.</p>
<p>Pulse launched a 2.0 update for the iPhone and Android today, with &#8220;enhanced performance, new content sources and improved sharing with social feeds and news discovery features.&#8221;</p>
<p>That means the app is speedier, has more news offerings in more categories and a bigger dollop of social content and sharing tools with Facebook, Twitter and other social networking companies.</p>
<p>Pulse now has eight employees squeezed into its small offices in downtown Palo Alto, CA&#8211;complete with the required start-up garage door.</p>

<p>As it turned out, BoomTown did not succumb to hipster poisoning on my sojourn this past weekend to Austin, Texas and the famous South by Southwest festival.</p>
<p>The annual gathering, which has interactive, music and film elements, started last week and is still going strong&#8211;fueled, as far as I can tell, by beer, blogging, empanadas and excessive start-up hype.</p>
<p>Actually, it was a good time had by me, despite assertions from some longtime attendees that SXSW had somehow jumped the shark.</p>
<p>I personally saw no shark-jumping, but there certainly were a lot of free t-shirts and fake tattoos.</p>
<p>Here is a video of a variety of scenes from the weekend, from all over SXSW, from our very own <strong>All Things Digital</strong> party (I now can retire, since I had a drink named after me) to encountering a giant cheddar cheese sculpture of cats.</p>
<p>Yes, it was that kind of SXSW.</p>

<p>In any case, despite my lack of hipster cred, I will be there for a party hosted by WordPress with drinks by The Wall Street Journal Digital Network and <strong>All Things Digital</strong> on Friday, as well as to interview Flipboard Co-founder and CEO Mike McCue on Saturday in an afternoon session with the subtitle: <a href="http://schedule.sxsw.com/events/event_IAP000328">&#8220;Game-Changer or Passing Fad?&#8221;</a></p>
<p>NetworkEffect&#8217;s Liz Gannes and The Digital Solution&#8217;s Katherine Boehret will also be at SXSW, so expect plenty of coverage from Texas.</p>

<p>&#8220;All Things D has become a particular sort of powerhouse in the overheated space devoted to tech news. It&#8217;s part of Dow Jones, so it&#8217;s got that gravitas. But it&#8217;s got the speed and humor of a blog.&#8221;</p>
<p>Yes, quick and funny and very <em>heavy</em>&#8211;that pretty much sums up <strong>ATD</strong>.</p>

<p>Here&#8217;s what&#8217;s happening at Myspace, the troubled social networking site owned by News Corp.:</p>
<p>It&#8217;s for sale, as has been widely reported, along with that intent being <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20110202/live-news-corp-talks-about-the-daily-myspace-and-earnings/">declared recently by top company execs</a>.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s hired Allen &#038; Co. to sort out potential buyers and other options, as has also been reported.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s hardly begun the process and is pretty much at square one, which means making lists, sorting out inquiries both crazy and valid and lining up its proverbial ducks for Myspace.</p>
<p>What it&#8217;s <em>not</em> doing is taking bids via press release, as happened in a decidedly odd fashion last week when MocoSpace, a Boston-based mobile social networking site, issued one.</p>
<p>Titled &#8220;MocoSpace Reveals Itself As Interested Party to Potentially Acquire Myspace,&#8221; the look-at-me attempt to suck up some attention from the media was riveting and appalling at the same time.</p>
<p>&#8220;MocoSpace, the largest entertainment destination on the mobile Internet, is today announcing their interest in acquiring Myspace from News Corp.,&#8221; read the press release.</p>
<p>And, of course, in the email from its PR rep: &#8220;Their CEO [Justin Siegel] is revealing their interest and is available to chat with you to discuss why.&#8221;</p>

<p>While an amusing tactic, <strong>All Things Digital</strong> declined the generous offer.</p>
<p>Soon enough came another PR entreaty: &#8220;Wanted to provide the update that today Newscorp contacted MocoSpace and they are now in conversation.&#8221;</p>
<p><em>Oh, really?</em> So, BoomTown phoned some sources there close to the situation and found them very perplexed at that characterization.</p>
<p>One source laughed at the gumption behind the MocoSpace press release, although added that the company was very much wanting to dispose of Myspace in the best possible way.</p>
<p>&#8220;No legitimate offers ignored,&#8221; said the source, who said a sale was more likely than bringing in new investors to recapitalize it. &#8220;But nothing has happened yet.&#8221;</p>
<p>Another source noted that the company had only sent an acknowledgement to MocoSpace, as it did for anyone who expressed any interest.</p>
<p>MocoSpace was kind enough to send me these emails, including one from News Corp. deal exec Jack Kennedy, which was entirely rote and referred Siegel to Allen &#038; Co. &#8220;to fill you in w/respect to how the process may develop.&#8221;</p>
<p>Added another source: &#8220;Nobody at this point that can be considered &#8216;in conversation.&#8217;&#8221;</p>

<p>Thus, more email spin from MocoSpace PR: &#8220;We never said that Newscorp contacted MocoSpace first. After MocoSpace released their statement, Justin Siegel did receive an email from Newscorp.&#8221;</p>
<p>And: &#8220;It seems that you may have misunderstood my email when I said they were &#8216;in conversation.&#8217; I simply meant that after MocoSpace made their intention public, Newscorp did contact them&#8211;hence &#8216;in conversation.&#8217;</p>
<p>And: &#8220;I did not mean to imply that they were in any sort of negotiating conversation&#8211;if that is something that you took from the email, it was an assumption, and I am sorry for any confusion in the wording there.&#8221;</p>
<p>How ever could I be confused after all this mishegas?</p>
<p>Finally, Siegel weighed in via email, noting in part:</p>
<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s been brought to my attention that there&#8217;s some confusion and frustration&#8230;.In addition, I&#8217;d like to clarify that this was/is not a publicity stunt. We made our interest in MySpace public. The interest it&#8217;s generated is surprising. To every person I&#8217;ve spoken to directly, I&#8217;ve made it clear that I&#8217;ve had no direct conversation with either MySpace or Newscorp regarding the sale.&#8221;</p>
<p>Like I said, no sale. Yet.</p>

<p>In a bold and definitive move, AOL is paying $315 million, mostly in cash, to buy the Huffington Post, one of the Web&#8217;s most prominent news and opinion sites.</p>
<p>As part of the deal, Huffington Post co-founder Arianna Huffington (pictured here)&#8211;who was derided by some when she co-founded the left-leaning site in 2005 with investor and well-known communications exec Kenneth Lerer&#8211;will become president and editor in chief of the Huffington Post Media Group within AOL.</p>
<p>The deal was signed late this afternoon, and the board of directors of each company and shareholders of the privately held Huffington Post have approved the transaction.</p>
<p>In an exclusive video interview BoomTown conducted earlier today in Dallas, just before Super Bowl XLV, both Armstrong and Huffington were jovial that the whirlwind deal, begun in November, actually worked out so quickly.</p>
<p>Perhaps giddy, they hit upon a common motto:</p>
<p>&#8220;One plus one equals 11.&#8221;</p>
<p><em>Get it? </em> One and one next to each other is the number 11!</p>
<p>Let&#8217;s move on, shall we?</p>
<p>AOL said it is expected to close in the late-first or early-second quarter of 2011.</p>
<p>Once culminated, it will put Huffington in charge of all AOL content and other properties, including well-known names such as Engadget, Moviefone, MapQuest and TechCrunch.</p>
<p>She said she plans to move to New York from Los Angeles, although she will also maintain her longtime Brentwood home there.</p>
<p>And content for all these sites will be integrated deeply into the Huffington Post, giving it a huge new infusion of editorial material.</p>
<p>More to the point, the flashy acquisition&#8211;which essentially came together in less than two weeks in January&#8211;will become the linchpin of AOL CEO Tim Armstrong&#8217;s aggressive, if risky, strategy to focus the long-troubled company as a content and advertising powerhouse.</p>
<p>For AOL, the deal gives it a popular branded site that is very good at generating lots of page views and impressions very efficiently&#8211;which is the company&#8217;s whole thrust these days.</p>
<p>That means lots more ad inventory to sell and an injection of content talent, giving AOL the scale it desperately needs.</p>
<p>The move also obviously gives AOL a much-needed editorial identity and cohesion, which it doesn&#8217;t really have.</p>
<p>In fact, many think AOL needs a rallying point to bring clarity to its hodgepodge of recent acquisitions that all center on the notion that a strong company has yet to emerge in the premium content space.</p>

<p>While it all makes for a riveting narrative by the charming Armstrong, AOL still has not delivered the business turnaround promised after its spinoff from Time Warner in 2009.</p>
<p>Wall Street, which has given Armstrong a lot of rope, has become more impatient of late to see results&#8211;especially more robust increases in its display advertising business, as its access business dies off&#8211;after AOL spun off from Time Warner in 2009.</p>
<p>In its quarterly report last week, AOL reported earnings of 61 cents a share on revenue of $596 million.</p>
<p>But, as <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20110202/aols-ad-turnaround-still-isnt-here-yet/">MediaMemo&#8217;s Peter Kafka</a> wrote:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>The bigger picture is that Armstrong&#8217;s turnaround is still in progress. Ad revenue was down 29 percent in the last quarter, although that number is worse than it looks. A big chunk of the decline comes from moves AOL has intentionally made that will cut revenue in the short run in return for more profitable sales down the road.</p>
<p>A more representative data set for Armstrong are his display ad sales, which are down 14 percent overall and eight percent in the U.S..</p>
<p>The bad news is that the rest of the Web ad industry is well into rebound mode; the good news is that AOL has trained Wall Street to expect numbers like these. If you&#8217;re waiting to see positive sales numbers, Armstrong said during AOL’s earnings call this morning, wait until the second half of this year.</p></blockquote>
<p>In any case, the move is a good one for the Huffington Post since it will vault it to the next level of growth.</p>
<p>Other companies, such as Yahoo and NBC Universal, had looked at the company as a purchase target, and many expected it to eventually sell out to a larger company.</p>
<p>Sources close to the Huffington Post said that that outcome seemed the most likely, and the recent expansion of the site and its audience made it a good time to do a deal now.</p>
<p>Talks with Yahoo last year went nowhere, sources said, but Armstrong was not as slow to act.</p>
<p>Indeed, the actual deal happened quickly, said Armstrong and Huffington in a video interview with BoomTown earlier today (<a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110206/aols-tim-armstrong-and-huffpos-arianna-huffington-talk-about-deal-touchdown-from-super-bowl/">which you can see here</a>).</p>
<p>The pair started talking in early November of last year at the Quadrangle Conference in New York and continued their discussions through the holidays.</p>
<p>Armstrong made the official offer to Huffington by phone in January, while she was at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, and he was snowed in in New York.</p>
<p>Five time multiple to the Huffington Post&#8217;s upward of $60 million in expected revenue for the coming year, and nearly 10 times the $31 million for 2010, the offer was accepted quickly.</p>
<p>AOL used cash for $300 million of the purchase and $15 million in stock for the rest.</p>
<p>&#8220;The idea of turning a fire hose of traffic onto our content made enormous sense,&#8221; said one person close to the situation. &#8220;Everything is changing so fast, it seemed like the time was right.&#8221;</p>
<p>An IPO was also considered for the Huffington Post, sources said. But since the site only recently moved into profitability&#8211;although barely&#8211;such an event would have been farther out.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s despite the fact that the Huffington Post has seen fast-growing traffic and influence, spurred in part by Huffington&#8217;s larger-than-life persona in both the mainstream media and blogosphere.</p>
<p>The wide-ranging site&#8211;which has added a number of content areas in recent years beyond its flagship political offering&#8211;currently has almost 26 million unique monthly visitors, according to recent stats, moving in close range to established news organizations such as the New York Times.</p>
<p>That kind of success seemed unlikely when the Huffington Post launched on May 9, 2005, positioning itself as as a liberal counterweight to the popular right-leaning Drudge Report.</p>
<p>But the Huffington Post&#8217;s heady mix of celebrity bloggers, personality and voice, as well as aggressive curation of links from other sites, quickly caught on.</p>
<p>To fund its efforts, the New York-based online media company has raised $37 million from angel investors such as Lerer&#8211;the largest individual shareholder, followed closely by Huffington&#8211;and venture firms such as Greycroft Partners, Softbank Capital and Oak Investment Partners.</p>
<p>The growth has not been without controversy around issues such as lack of payments to bloggers who contribute and accusations that the site uses too much content from other Web sources when linking.</p>
<p>And Huffington herself has also been a lightning rod, which has been both positive and negative for the site.</p>
<p>But, there is no question she is one of the Web&#8217;s most prominent players, along with writing books, appearing on television frequently and being a fixture at high-profile events in New York, Los Angeles and Washington, D.C.</p>
<p>That includes a never-ending panoply of parties that feature a potent mix of movie stars, corporate poo-bahs, glad-handing politicians and lots of journalists from all over the media.</p>
<p>In fact, full disclosure, I was at one of those parties this past weekend for actor Colin Firth and others involved in the making of the Oscar-nominated film &#8220;The King&#8217;s Speech.&#8221; (Apropos of nothing, actor Helena Bonham Carter is as smart as you would expect, but much more delicate.)</p>
<p>As part of the AOL deal, CEO Eric Hippeau&#8211;who has been integral to professionalizing the business and will be joining Lerer Ventures&#8211;and Chief Revenue Officer Greg Coleman will leave the Huffington Post.</p>
<p>Ironically, Coleman was replaced by Armstrong as head of ad sales at AOL after he took over as CEO. Coleman got a big payout and will now apparently get another.</p>
<p>But the rest of the 200 Huffington Post employees are moving over to AOL with Huffington, who Armstrong hopes will be the company&#8217;s ace in the content hole going forward.</p>
<p>There are likely to be changes to come too at AOL, within weeks, especially in its content-side management and site staffs.</p>
<p>AOL provided some quotes in support of the deal from prominent Internet figures who know Huffington well.</p>
<p>&#8220;Arianna is one of the preeminent authors and editors of our time, and Tim has a remarkable track record of business success,&#8221; said Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg. &#8220;Bringing them together creates tremendous potential for AOL.&#8221;</p>
<p>And Twitter co-founder Biz Stone said:</p>
<p>&#8220;Editorial vision and leadership are essential in order to transmute our shared cacophony of voices into a valuable dialogue. Arianna&#8217;s expertise, empathy, and entrepreneurial enthusiasm forms a kind of alchemy turning mere words and phrases into powerful expressions of humanity.&#8221;</p>

<p>AOL has agreed to purchase The Huffington Post for $315 million, approximately $300 million of which will be paid in cash funded from cash on hand. The Huffington Post is privately owned by its two cofounders, as well as a group of investors. The proposed transaction is subject to customary closing conditions, including receipt of government approvals. The boards of directors of each company and shareholders of The Huffington Post have approved the transaction. The transaction is expected to close in the late first- or early second-quarter 2011.</p>
<p>The Huffington Post over-indexes on educated, affluent users, reaching the key decision makers in C-suites around the globe. The Huffington Post speaks to this influential audience via a host of prominent voices on its group blog. <p>* AOL passed Hulu in unique viewers on video in the fourth quarter of 2010; video views on AOL are up 400 percent year-over-year.</p>

<p>Today, Sprint Nextel CEO <a href="http://emoney.allthingsd.com/20101207/sprint-ceo-dan-hesse-at-dive-into-mobile/">Dan Hesse</a> talks about battling the leaders for dominance among wireless carriers.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s not easy being No. 3, but Hesse has tried to mind the gap by beefing up Sprint&#8217;s customer service and investing in the prepaid sector to attract a wider audience during the economic downturn. Going forward, Sprint looks to its 4G strategy for growth through its ownership stake in WiMax-provider Clearwire.</p>

<p>To say BoomTown is not a person who likes to hear when I arrive at a vacation spot, &#8220;Have a magical day,&#8221; is an understatement.</p>
<p>In fact, if I were a Disney character, I would be an unholy mash-up of Cruella de Vil, Grumpy and Scrooge McDuck.</p>
<p>Yet, here I am for the rest of the week&#8211;after just barely escaping snow prison in New York&#8211;at Disney World in Florida, with the wife and kids and a lot of preternaturally peppy folks from all over the world.</p>
<p>In other words, it&#8217;s a small world after all, instead of just a smaller Yahoo via layoffs and exec departures. Or, Pirates of the Caribbean and not Pirates of Silicon Valley.</p>
<p>You get the idea.</p>
<p>(Although since Walt Mossberg and I will be interviewing Disney CEO <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20101009/when-you-wish-upon-two-web-stars-ceo-bob-iger-talks-about-the-next-digital-direction-for-disney-2/">Robert Iger</a> at <strong>D: All Things Digital</strong>, our ninth conference in June of next year, it&#8217;s <em>kind</em> of work-related.)</p>
<p>In any case, I won&#8217;t be posting much&#8211;except for putting up the last of the <strong>D: Dive Into Mobile</strong> full videos&#8211;until a week from now.</p>
<p>But, all week, <strong>All Things Digital</strong> writers will be weighing in on the year past and the one ahead, starting with MediaMemo&#8217;s Peter Kafka later today.</p>
<p>When I return, I&#8217;ll be setting the stage for the upcoming Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas (my kind of theme park!), where we will be putting on an afternoon of interviews with big names in tech for <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20101215/dces-what-happens-to-twitters-dick-costolo-in-vegas-stays-on-atd/"><strong>D@CES</strong></a>.</p>
<p>After that, it&#8217;s right into the expected move of Apple iPhone to Verizon and more, since the tech parade&#8211;just like the Electrical Parade on Main Street in the Magic Kingdom&#8211;never seems to stop.</p>
<p>So, until 2011, have a magical day. And I mean that in the Cruella-ist way.</p>

<p>In one memorable episode of the famous old short films &#8220;The Little Rascals,&#8221; after not getting invited to a party, the Our Gang little dudes decided to form their own group, comically called &#8220;The He-Man Woman-Haters Club.&#8221;</p>
<p>In other words: <em>No girls allowed!</em></p>
<p>While it was wink-wink cute when Spanky, Alfalfa and Buckwheat huffed and puffed about keeping out Darla&#8211;which they never ever could do&#8211;back in the last century, it&#8217;s not quite as adorkable when it comes to the boards of all the major Web 2.0 hotshots these days.</p>
<p>That would be Twitter, Facebook, Zynga, Groupon and Foursquare, none of which have any women as directors.</p>
<p>As in <em>zero</em>.</p>
<p>What&#8217;s most remarkable is that most of these start-ups are run by what I consider enlightened and open-minded entrepreneurs, mostly young enough to be part of a generation more inclined to value equality and diversity in the workplace.</p>
<p>In addition, each of these companies has a massive base of women consumers, in some cases well over 50 percent of its audience.</p>
<p>Thus, it would seem logical that in casting about for those to help guide these companies, one or two women leaders might slip in.</p>
<p>To be fair, it&#8217;s not for lack of trying, but of completion, as was the case with Twitter&#8217;s <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20101215/exclusive-twitter-raises-200-million-at-3-7-billion-valuation-adds-mccue-and-rosenblatt-to-board/">recent addition of three new board members</a>.</p>
<p>They were longtime Silicon Valley exec Peter Currie, Flipboard CEO and co-founder Mike McCue and former DoubleClick leader David Rosenblatt.</p>

<p>All are deeply qualified for the Twitter board, which is obviously prepping for its next stage of growth and maturity.</p>
<p>But in its search, the San Francisco microblogging site did not manage to cast the net quite wide enough.</p>
<p>While sources said at least one prominent online woman exec was considered, there were some legitimate issues with her appointment, and it was not completed.</p>
<p>Still, one might imagine Twitter could have tried harder to find other workable choices.</p>
<p>Currently, the Twitter board is made up of the new trio, as well as Benchmark Capital&#8217;s Peter Fenton, Union Square Ventures&#8217; Fred Wilson, Bijan Sabet of Spark Capital, CEO Dick Costolo and co-founders Evan Williams and Jack Dorsey.</p>
<p>Things are not any better over at Facebook, which has several prominent women execs running the show, most especially its high-profile COO Sheryl Sandberg.</p>
<p>But, inexplicably, though she does attend board meetings, she is not yet a director of Facebook, nor is any other woman.</p>
<p>In fact, here is Sandberg on topic at a recent TED event for women, in an eloquent speech titled &#8220;Why We Have So Few Women Leaders&#8221;:</p>

<p>Instead, the Facebook board is all men, all the time, composed of CEO and co-founder Mark Zuckerberg, prominent techie and venture capitalist Marc Andreessen, investor Peter Thiel, Accel Partners&#8217; Jim Breyer and Washington Post head Don Graham.</p>
<p>It is no better at three of the most prominent recent Web 2.0 start-ups, which one source attributes to the lack of woman VCs, who are often the first board members after major investment rounds.</p>
<p>At Zynga, the hot social gaming company in San Francisco, it continues, with an all-male board, despite a very heavily female audience for its casual social games.</p>
<p>That would be co-founder and CEO Mark Pincus, COO Owen Van Natta, investor Bing Gordon of Kleiner Perkins, investor Reid Hoffman and Brad Feld of the Foundry Group.</p>
<p>The same is true at woman-targeted&#8211;spas, spas and more spas&#8211;social buying site Groupon, which has an unusually large board for a start-up and made up of&#8211;as per usual&#8211;all men.</p>

<p>The list: Co-founder and CEO Andrew Mason, Accel Partners&#8217; Kevin Efrusy, former AT&#038;T President and COO John Walter, New Enterprise Associates&#8217; Harry Weller and Peter Barris, former AOL exec Ted Leonsis, 37Signals co-founder Jason Fried and early investors Eric Lefkofsky and Brad Keywell.</p>
<p>And, much smaller, is Foursquare&#8217;s board, which is the trio of co-founder and CEO Dennis Crowley, co-founder Naveen Selvadurai and Union Square Ventures&#8217; Albert Wenger.</p>
<p>New investors&#8211;Ben Horowitz of Andreessen Horowitz and O&#8217;Reilly AlphaTech Ventures&#8217; Bryce Roberts&#8211;have observer status and both are, needless to say, dudes.</p>
<p>There is no question it is tough to make sure there is a good balance of qualified women leaders to men in tech&#8211;it is an issue we wrestle with every single year for the program of speakers at our own <strong>All Things Digital</strong> conference, although we are most excellent on this issue on our Web site and conference staff.</p>
<p>But it can be done, especially at public tech companies. Google has two women on its board of nine directors; Yahoo has three of 10; even Oracle has two of a dozen.</p>
<p>But a grand total of zero at the leading companies of Web 2.0 is not just a coincidence.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s a shame.</p>
<p>Tomorrow, BoomTown will post a list of great women who would be superb directors for any of these companies, but until then, let&#8217;s not follow in Spanky&#8217;s steps:</p>

<p>In Europe, the popular service offers unlimited tracks for free, or users can subscribe for an advertising-free version.</p>
<p>Ek talks about all this and more in his interview with MediaMemo&#8217;s Peter Kafka.</p>

<p>Flipboard had resisted adding feeds because its mission is to curate content through social channels. However, said co-founder Evan Doll, the company decided Google Reader wouldn&#8217;t be too much of a compromise, because it is synched through the cloud and has social sharing features.</p>
<p>Also, now that Flipboard has access to RSS feeds, it will display the full text of many articles when they are shared by a Flipboard user&#8217;s contacts on Facebook or Twitter.</p>
<p>(If publishers provide only excerpts in their RSS feeds, that&#8217;s all Flipboard users will get. If publishers are part of <a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/20101202/flipboard-partners-with-web-publishers-for-full-content-full-disclosure-including-atd/?mod=ATD_search">Flipboard&#8217;s Pages program</a>, their stories will be displayed in specially formatted &#8220;magazinified&#8221; pages no matter where they appear in the app.)</p>
<p>(Full disclosure: <strong>All Things Digital</strong> is a beta partner in the program.)</p>
<p>Flipboard is also adding Flickr feeds, something that had long been on the company&#8217;s list, said Doll. For users who curate their Flickr contacts and favorite pictures, viewing them on Flipboard will be a &#8220;personal life magazine,&#8221; as Doll put it.</p>
<p>The other big change Flipboard is making is that it will load full Web pages as soon as a user clicks on a story, rather than asking users to take the extra step of clicking a &#8220;read on Web&#8221; button.</p>
<p>And for good measure, Flipboard will now allow readers to update Facebook and Twitter (as pictured), rather than just consume their content.</p>
<p>Now that Flipboard has caved and added RSS feeds to its app, I asked Doll if it would ever add search to complement social discovery.</p>
<p>&#8220;That&#8217;s a great question,&#8221; he said, before not really answering it.</p>
<p>Flipboard launched last July and has received wide acclaim, including being named <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20101209/top-ios-apps-of-2010-flipboard-hipstamatic-plants-vs-zombies-and-osmos/">Apple&#8217;s top iPad app of 2010</a>. However, it has not yet disclosed user numbers.</p>

<p>After our successful <strong>D: Dive Into Mobile</strong> conference last week, the <strong>D: All Things Digital</strong> train keeps chugging away and is now headed to Las Vegas just after the new year.</p>
<p>There, we will do a second <strong>D</strong> event at the <a href="http://www.cesweb.org/events/digital-ces.asp">Consumer Electronics Show</a>, which will take place from January 6 to 9, 2011.</p>
<p>It will, natch, be focused on the consumer electronics arena, and the big trends impacting it.</p>
<p>Unlike our other conferences, the <strong>D@CES</strong> program is only one afternoon, on Friday, January 7, at the Venetian&#8217;s Marcello ballroom, followed by a party at the hotel&#8217;s V Bar.</p>
<p>Last year&#8217;s tech execs onstage were Palm CEO Jon Rubinstein, Netflix founder and CEO Reed Hastings and Google&#8217;s Android chief Andy Rubin.</p>
<p>This year, the trio will be: Twitter CEO Dick Costolo, Nvidia co-founder and CEO Jen-Hsun Huang and Dean Hachamovitch, who heads the Internet Explorer team within the Windows unit at Microsoft.</p>

<p>Costolo (pictured here), a longtime entrepreneur, took over from co-founder Evan Williams earlier this year and is charged with turning the microblogging service into a real-live boy, um, company.</p>
<p>Twitter is making a big push into the mainstream and also wants to be present for all the many devices shown at CES.</p>
<p>BoomTown will be grilling Costolo. Well done, I hope!</p>

<p>Nvidia&#8217;s Huang (pictured here) is leading a big change for the company. Although known for its PC graphics chips, Nvidia is shifting an increasing amount of focus to other areas, such as mobile chips with its Tegra line.</p>
<p>Huang will be interviewed by Mobilized&#8217;s Ina Fried.</p>
<p>Walt Mossberg will take on Hachamovitch (pictured below), who heads the IE team at Microsoft.</p>

<p>We thought bringing his voice was important, since Hachamovitch has been focusing on privacy using the browser, an increasingly key topic in tech.</p>

<p>The first extension of the event, it produced some very newsy sessions. We&#8217;ll be posting them all this week and next.</p>

<p>Here&#8217;s the first interview on opening night with Google Android head <a href="http://mobilized.allthingsd.com/20101206/googles-andy-rubin-dives-into-android">Andy Rubin</a> (pictured here), conducted by Walt Mossberg and me.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s full of new stuff, such as the fact that Android is profitable (exactly how profitable, Rubin declined to say) and that he thought Google&#8217;s ubiquity strategy for its smartphone operating system was more akin to that of Linux than Microsoft in computers.</p>
<p>Rubin also commented on Google&#8217;s shift from its one-time lofty declaration to change the way mobile devices are sold to its obviously now-cozy relationship with wireless carriers.</p>
<p>And he complimented Apple and its iPhone, Android&#8217;s main rival.</p>
<p>As BoomTown said, much to see, including a look at the new Nexus S and a $10,000 Android-based Motorola demo tablet.</p>

<p>That includes this corker with <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20101207/rim-co-ceo-mike-lazaridis-live-at-dive-into-mobile/">Research in Motion&#8217;s co-CEO and co-founder Mike Lazaridis</a> (pictured here).</p>
<p>In it, he did not quite answer our questions about why RIM&#8217;s flagship BlackBerry seems to have missed a step in the highly competitive smartphone wars compared to its new and more innovative rivals, Apple&#8217;s iPhone and Google Android.</p>
<p>While he did make a global argument, Lazaridis also seemed to be putting his big bet on the new PlayBook tablet the Canadian company is launching, as well as RIM&#8217;s reputation for security and reliability.</p>

<p>Earlier this week, the Knight Digital Media Center penned a post on the full disclosure policy of <strong>All Things Digital</strong>.</p>
<p>Titled <a href="http://www.knightdigitalmediacenter.org/leadership_blog/comments/20101207_transparency_for_journalists_allthingsd_shows_what_it_can_look_lik/">&#8220;Transparency for Journalists: AllThingsD Shows What It Can Look Like,&#8221;</a> it&#8217;s a very nice review of what we do on the site.</p>
<p>&#8220;What I like about these statements is that they aren&#8217;t cookie-cutter corpspeak or legalese. They&#8217;re human&#8211;and even humorous&#8211;revelations,&#8221; wrote Amy Gahran. &#8220;Each writer gets to decide which topics she or he wants to cover, and how. This can get pretty personal, and that&#8217;s a good thing. &#8220;</p>
<p>We think so too at <strong>ATD</strong>, which is why you should check in with a whole new bunch of full disclosures we have posted recently, since adding a half-dozen new staffers.</p>
<p>You can click in from our <a href="http://allthingsd.com/about/">About Us</a> page to read a disclosure penned by each person on the site with editorial responsibilities.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s important to us to have them there, as we feel that being transparent and honest to readers is the first step in our commitment to fairness, accuracy and ethical standards.</p>
<p>The Knight story had some good advice at the bottom of its report for crafting a solid disclosure policy:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p><strong>Publish your key disclosures in one place.</strong></p>
<p>By publishing the ethics statements as static pages, they&#8217;re not only easier for readers to find&#8211;they&#8217;re easier for search engines to index and rank. Transparency is not just about disclosure, but about visibility (which in the online age entails findability). If you dole out disclosures in dribs and drabs, buried within specific articles or posts, you&#8217;re less likely to gain the visibility needed to make transparency effective.</p>
<p><strong>Leave what to disclose up to the individual. </strong></p>
<p>The most effective transparency statements are personal, not cookie-cutter. Don&#8217;t require journalists to disclose information that they would prefer to keep private. But similarly, don&#8217;t prohibit them from sharing whatever personal information or context they wish to offer. Ultimately, these disclosures are about people, not organizations. Editors and managers can supply examples and encourage good judgment&#8211;but if a writer really thinks it&#8217;s important to let readers know that he votes Republican, vacations in Brazil, volunteers as an abortion clinic escort, loathes cilantro, or has a favorite Beatle, that&#8217;s his business.</p>
<p><strong>Make it easy for journalists to update their statements.</strong></p>
<p>Life goes on&#8211;which means life circumstances, current concerns, and personal views constantly evolve. New issues always come up, so a journalists&#8217; transparency statement should be a living document that the journalist can modify at will. Make sure your content management system makes this easy. It&#8217;s not a good idea to edit this document daily (that could make you look obsessed with what others think), but it should be revisited at least annually or every few months.</p></blockquote>

<p>There is no question that legendary entrepreneur Marc Andreessen is a power player in Silicon Valley.</p>
<p>Nor that Michael Ovitz, who used to be <em>the</em> power player in Hollywood, is one of the people who did most to disrupt the way business was done in the entertainment industry, with his bare-knuckle approach at his groundbreaking Creative Artists Agency.</p>
<p>So, if you put them together, as happened recently at the Sand Hill Road offices of the Andreessen Horowitz venture firm, you get what turned out to be a very interesting discussion.</p>
<p>In fact, Andreessen actually interviewed Ovitz in front of a private audience about his life and philosophies.</p>
<p>BoomTown attended the event, which had been off the record until now, when a video of the talk was provided to <strong>All Things Digital</strong>.</p>
<p>The pair met up awhile ago, as Ovitz developed an interest in Silicon Valley after his glory days as an &uuml;ber-agent and his fateful stint as a top exec at Disney.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s the video of the full interview, in which he talks about all of that. It&#8217;s long, at one hour, but&#8211;as you&#8217;ll find&#8211;quite riveting:</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Welcome to the grand opening of eMoney.</p>
<p>I&#8217;m Tricia Duryee, one of the latest additions to <strong>All Things Digital</strong>. You may know me from the three years I spent at mocoNews, where I wrote about the mobile industry, or before that, as a technology reporter at the Seattle Times. Going forward, I will write about e-commerce and gaming, as well as all sorts of financial machinations.</p>

<p>As you might expect, I will be reporting on some of the more traditional companies in the space, such as Amazon, Walmart, Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony.</p>
<p>But there will also be strong emphasis on a handful of start-ups that are currently doing their best to upset the status quo. In this bucket, I see three categories emerging: Virtual goods, social-and-group-buying companies and mobile payments.</p>
<p>The dollars are really starting to ring up in these areas, even after such a short period of time. In just three years, Zynga has signed up 320 million registered users, has hired 1,300 employees and is estimated to have $500 million in 2010 revenues with a roughly $5 billion private-market valuation.</p>
<p>Likewise, the two-year-old Groupon is being sought by Google, which <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20101129/googles-groupon-offer-5-3-billion-with-700-million-earnout/">BoomTown&#8217;s Kara Swisher reports</a> may offer up to $6 billion to get a foothold in the social-buying business and gain a local sales force across the country.</p>
<p>And finally, mobile will be an increasingly hot topic as consumers use their devices for every part of this value chain&#8211;from discovering deals to researching recommendations to substituting their wallet for a phone. Among other topics, there’s a flurry of contenders challenging Visa and MasterCard for its merchant fees, which were estimated to have totaled $7 billion in the U.S. over the past year.</p>
<p>Generally, when I think of this coverage area, I see one central theme: How will people make money, and how will consumers pay? Will games be purchased, or will they be ad-supported? Or, will consumers buy one virtual tractor at a time?</p>
<p>The debate reminds me of what Zynga’s CEO and founder, Mark Pincus, said at a recent event, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20101021/liveblogging-unveiling-of-the-sfund-at-facebook-with-guest-stars-kleiner-amazon-and-zynga/">where Kleiner Perkins announced a new fund dedicated to social</a>.</p>
<p>Said Pincus:</p>
<p>&#8220;We are massively under-invested across the board in the &#8216;user-pay economy.&#8217; There’s been this wrong assumption for first-generation Web services that it has to be free with ads. We believe in a model that is supported by users. That&#8217;s not just games and virtual goods. There&#8217;s a lot of newly created valuable digital goods and services products.&#8221;</p>
