Paul Allen’s Suit Against Tech Industry: Take Two

Paul Allen’s Interval Licensing has revived a patent lawsuit against a number of tech companies, including Google and Apple, filing a new set of court papers on Tuesday. Allen sued Google, Apple, AOL, eBay, Facebook, Netflix, Office Depot, OfficeMax, Staples and Yahoo in August, but the case was dismissed earlier this month, with Tuesday set as the deadline for Interval to file an amended complaint. As noted by open source industry blogger Florian Mueller, the new claims include allegations that Android infringes on Interval patents, adding to a growing list of legal claims being leveled in the mobile arena.

Salesforce.com Honored With Rare Microsoft Patent-Infringement Suit

In a January Securities and Exchange Commission filing, Salesforce.com listed among its risk factors “a communication from a large technology company alleging that we were infringing upon some of their patents.” The company didn’t identify the source of that communication or the extent of its allegations, only that the two were in discussions and no litigation had yet been filed. Well, on Tuesday litigation was filed–by Microsoft.

Before Apple lobbed a patent infringement lawsuit at Taiwanese handset manufacturer HTC yesterday, we were lucky to get its CEO, Peter Chou, to agree to appear at the eighth D: All Things Digital conference to talk about its work making smartphones for Google and others. That interview obviously got a whole lot more interesting with the epic legal action by Apple alleging that HTC infringed some 20 patents related to the iPhone’s graphical user interface, underlying architecture and hardware.
