<p>Even without that freakish Thanksgiving treat, the Web is full of fun diversions on every topic, including the thankful, enhanced-patted-down long weekend of consumption Americans have ahead of us.</p>
<p>Read on for some of my Thanksgiving ephemeralia picks for this year:</p>
<p><img class="alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-735" title="nixon-thanksgiving-l" src="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/files/2010/11/nixon-thanksgiving-l-150x150.jpg" alt="" width="150" height="150" />Here&#8217;s a historical tidbit I became aware of after reading <a href="http://www.archives.gov/press/press-releases/2010/nr10-25.html">the National Archives</a> online today: Did you know that in 1863 President Abraham Lincoln made Thanksgiving a national holiday to be held on the fourth Thursday in November, but in 1939 President Franklin D. Roosevelt changed it to the third Thursday to &#8220;to lengthen the Christmas shopping season and boost the economy which was still recovering from the Depression&#8221;?</p>
<p>The National Archives Web site also provides some documents from Thanksgiving throughout the years, including this one of <a href="http://www.archives.gov/global-pages/larger-image.html?i=/press/press-releases/images/nixon-thanksgiving-l.jpg&amp;c=/press/press-releases/images/nixon-thanksgiving.caption.html">President Richard Nixon and a turkey</a>.</p>

And there was a pretty good Facebook bit, too. But the rest of you will want to hear and read about the climax of Jon Stewarts&#8217;s &#8220;Rally to Restore Sanity&#8221; yesterday. <p>“I can’t control what people think this was. I can only tell you my intentions. This was not a rally to ridicule people of faith or people of activism or to look down our noses at the heartland or passionate argument or to suggest that times are not difficult and that we have nothing to fear. They are and we do. But we live now in hard times, not end times. And we can have animus and not be enemies.</p>
<p>But unfortunately one of our main tools in delineating the two broke. The country’s 24 hour political pundit perpetual panic conflictinator did not cause our problems but its existence makes solving them that much harder. The press can hold its magnifying glass up to our problems bringing them into focus, illuminating issues heretofore unseen or they can use that magnifying glass to light ants on fire and then perhaps host a week of shows on the sudden, unexpected dangerous flaming ant epidemic.</p>
<p>If we amplify everything we hear nothing. There are terrorists and racists and Stalinists and theocrats but those are titles that must be earned. You must have the resume.  Not being able to distinguish between real racists and Tea Partiers or real bigots and Juan Williams or Rick Sanchez is an insult, not only to those people but to the racists themselves who have put in the exhausting effort it takes to hate&#8211;just as the inability to distinguish terrorists from Muslims makes us less safe, not more. The press is our immune system. If it overreacts to everything we actually get sicker&#8211;and perhaps eczema.</p>
<p>And yet, with that being said, I feel good&#8211;strangely, calmly good. Because the image of Americans that is reflected back to us by our political and media process is false. It is us through a fun house mirror, and not the good kind that makes you look slim in the waist and maybe taller, but the kind where you have a giant forehead and an ass shaped like a month-old pumpkin and one eyeball.</p>
<p>So, why would we work together?  Why would you reach across the aisle to a pumpkin assed forehead eyeball monster? If the picture of us were true, of course, our inability to solve problems would actually be quite sane and reasonable. Why would you work with Marxists actively subverting our Constitution or racists and homophobes who see no one’s humanity but their own?  We hear every damn day about how fragile our country is&#8211;on the brink of catastrophe&#8211;torn by polarizing hate and how it’s a shame that we can’t work together to get things done, but the truth is we do.  We work together to get things done every damn day!</p>
<p>The only place we don’t is here or on cable TV. But Americans don’t live here or on cable TV. Where we live our values and principles form the foundation that sustains us while we get things done, not the barriers that prevent us from getting things done. Most Americans don’t live their lives solely as Democrats, Republicans, liberals or conservatives. Americans live their lives more as people that are just a little bit late for something they have to do&#8211;often something they do not want to do&#8211;but they do it&#8211;impossible things every day that are only made possible through the little reasonable compromises we all make.</p>
<p>Look on the screen. This is where we are. This is who we are.  [points to the Jumbotron screen which shows traffic merging into a tunnel]. These cars&#8211;that’s a schoolteacher who probably thinks his taxes are too high.  He’s going to work.  There’s another car-a woman with two small kids who can’t really think about anything else right now. There’s another car, swinging, I don’t even know if you can see it&#8211;the lady’s in the NRA and she loves Oprah.  There’s another car&#8211;an investment banker, gay, also likes Oprah.  Another car’s a Latino carpenter. Another car a fundamentalist vacuum salesman.  Atheist obstetrician. Mormon Jay-Z fan. But this is us. Every one of the cars that you see is filled with individuals of strong belief and principles they hold dear&#8211;often principles and beliefs in direct opposition to their fellow travelers.</p>
<p>And yet these millions of cars must somehow find a way to squeeze one by one into a mile long 30 foot wide tunnel carved underneath a mighty river. Carved, by the way, by people who I’m sure had their differences. And they do it. Concession by concession. You go. Then I’ll go. You go. Then I’ll go. You go then I’ll go. Oh my God, is that an NRA sticker on your car? Is that an Obama sticker on your car? Well, that’s okay&#8211;you go and then I’ll go.</p>
<p>And sure, at some point there will be a selfish jerk who zips up the shoulder and cuts in at the last minute, but that individual is rare and he is scorned and not hired as an analyst.</p>
<p>Because we know instinctively as a people that if we are to get through the darkness and back into the light we have to work together. And the truth is, there will always be darkness. And sometimes the light at the end of the tunnel isn’t the promised land. Sometimes it’s just New Jersey. But we do it anyway, together.</p>
<p>If you want to know why I’m here and want I want from you, I can only assure you this: you have already given it to me.  Your presence was what I wanted.</p>
<p>Sanity will always be and has always been in the eye of the beholder. To see you here today and the kind of people that you are has restored mine. Thank you.&#8221;</p>
<p>*Note that this isn&#8217;t coming from the most obvious sources: Viacom&#8217;s own <a href="http://www.thedailyshow.com/">Daily Show</a> site, which carried a live stream of the event but doesn&#8217;t have any record of it anymore, or <a href="http://www.c-span.org/Special/Live-Social.aspx">C-SPAN</a>, which is running a loop of the rally, but doesn&#8217;t have a handy way to excerpt the three-hour event. 			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>In the weeks before the New Hampshire primary last month, Linda Twombly of Nashua says she was peppered with online ads for Republican Senate hopeful Jim Bender.</p>
<p>It was no accident. An online tracking company called RapLeaf Inc. had correctly identified her as a conservative who is interested in Republican politics, has an interest in the Bible and contributes to political and environmental causes. Mrs. Twombly&#8217;s profile is part of RapLeaf&#8217;s rich trove of data, garnered from a variety of sources and which both political parties have tapped.</p>
<p>RapLeaf knows even more about Mrs. Twombly and millions of other Americans: their real names and email addresses.</p>
<p>This makes RapLeaf a rare breed. Rival tracking companies also gather minute detail on individual Americans: They know a tremendous amount about what you do. But most trackers either can&#8217;t or won&#8217;t keep the ultimate piece of personal information—your name—in their databases.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The tech industry and media are focused on Apple&#8217;s (AAPL) forthcoming iPad tablet computer, a multifunction device that includes an e-book reader. Meanwhile, with much less fanfare, other companies are pressing ahead with conventional, dedicated e-readers aimed at the leader in the category: Amazon&#8217;s Kindle.</p>

<p>These more focused, monochrome devices aren&#8217;t as flashy or as versatile as the iPad, which handles everything from email to games. But they cost less and are aimed wholly at people who seek to read books and periodicals in digital form.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ve been testing one such new e-reader from a company that has been in the business for years, but is mainly known in Europe. It is called the Irex DR800SG and costs $400 at bestbuy.com (BBY)—about $140 more than the Kindle. While the DR800SG uses the same electronic ink screen technology as the Kindle, it has some major differences: in screen size, in user interface, and in the way it wirelessly downloads books and newspapers.</p>
<p>The Irex is shorter but wider than the Kindle, and has an 8.1-inch screen, versus the Kindle&#8217;s 6-inch screen. It&#8217;s slightly thicker than the Kindle, but about 25% heavier. It has a single, thin page-turning and menu button on the left side, while the Kindle has larger, multiple buttons on both sides. Both devices claim to hold about 1,500 books.</p>
<p>Irex, a Los Angeles-based company whose products are engineered in the Netherlands, produced its first e-reader in 2004, but this new model is its first aimed specifically at the American market and its first to use the cellular 3G network for downloading content.</p>

<p>The new Irex has some advantages over the Kindle. Its larger screen makes for a better reading experience, allowing many more words to show on the page, at similar font sizes. The screen also seems slightly sharper.</p>
<p>The Irex looks sleeker than the Kindle, because it has a much thinner bezel around the screen, due mainly to the lack of a physical keyboard. It also does a better job of organizing your reading material, grouping items into separate folders for books, newspapers, and personal documents.</p>
<p>And, instead of being linked to a single online store, like Amazon (AMZN), it uses a &#8220;mall&#8221; concept, designed to allow users to choose from many different online stores, though only two are available now. The principal merchant in the mall so far is the Barnes &#038; Noble e-book store—the same one used on the Barnes &#038; Noble (BKS) Nook e-reader—which claims about a million titles. The other store is called NewspaperDirect, which claims over 1,000 newspapers.</p>
<p>However, in my tests, I found the Irex much clumsier to use than the Kindle and, because of that, I still prefer the Amazon device. For instance, the Irex requires a stylus—an ancient and fading navigation device—for some operations. Yet it lacks a holder for this pointer except in the leather cover, so the stylus is easy to lose. The Irex also lacks a Home button, a note-taking function, any way to highlight text and a built-in dictionary.</p>
<p>More important, I found the mall concept for downloading books to be frustrating. Because the Irex isn&#8217;t seamlessly linked to its own online store, I had to establish, or sign into, four different accounts to test the device fully. Even after that, each Barnes &#038; Noble download required multiple steps. On the Kindle, ordering books is a breeze, and they appear almost instantly after you click a single &#8220;Buy&#8221; button.</p>
<p>This last issue is a trade-off between greater choice and simpler, quicker functionality. Some readers will be willing to make that trade-off, especially if Irex is able to add specialized stores in the future that offer, say, a large selection of non-English-language books. But, for most Americans with typical book needs, I find the current trade-off unacceptable.</p>
<p>For example, books I bought from Barnes &#038; Noble appeared slowly on the Irex. The device seemed to have to turn on its radio and establish a new connection each time. Also, until I opened each book, they appeared on the screen identified only by a geeky file name. And, after I opened each, there was a long delay while the device did something called &#8220;counting pages.&#8221;</p>
<p>The company says that some of these shortcomings will be fixed in a software update due as soon as next month. It promises there will be a note-taking function, speedier wireless connections and the elimination of the counting-pages delay. It also says it is working on a universal log-in system for its mall of stores. But highlighting and a dictionary are only being &#8220;considered&#8221; for a future revision.</p>
<p>On the bright side, I was able to easily plug the Irex into a PC and Mac, and manually drag onto it personal PDF files, pictures and even a free book I bought at a Web site.</p>
<p>Irex says it is working on a color model for next year. I hope it works more smoothly than the DR800SG.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img src="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/files/2010/02/fiber_house-150x150.gif" alt="" title="fiber_house" width="150" height="150" class="alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-34628" />For the past few years, we’ve been hearing rumblings about Google leasing hundreds of thousands of square feet of <a href="http://www.lightreading.com/document.asp?doc_id=80968">carrier hotel space</a>, buying up dark fiber, mulling the purchase of hundreds of millions of dollars in DWDM and Ethernet-based telecom equipment and helping build out a <a href="http://www.google.com/intl/en/press/pressrel/20080225_newcablesystem.html">trans-Pacific multi-terabit undersea cable</a>. </p>
<p>Given Google&#8217;s mission&#8211;to organize the world&#8217;s information and make it universally accessible and useful&#8211;and the telecom costs and peering fees associated with this goal, it was inevitable that the company would look to secure additional network capacity.</p>
<p>But evidently, Google (GOOG) had other ambitions here as well&#8211;like deploying its own 1Gbps fiber-to-the-home Internet service.</p>
<p>&#8220;We’re planning to build and test ultra high-speed broadband networks in a small number of trial locations across the United States,&#8221; <a href="http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2010/02/think-big-with-gig-our-experimental.html">Google product managers Minny Ingersoll and James Kelly wrote in a company blog post</a>. &#8220;We’ll deliver Internet speeds more than 100 times faster than what most Americans have access to today with 1 gigabit per second, fiber-to-the-home connections. We plan to offer service at a competitive price to at least 50,000 and potentially up to 500,000 people.&#8221;</p>
<p>Google insists that the purpose of this project is to &#8220;experiment and learn&#8221; in hope of making Internet access better and faster for everyone. That&#8217;s an altruistic goal, but a selfishly altruistic one. By providing Internet speeds of 1Gbps, Google will drive further usage of its various services and the contextual ads it peppers them with. At the same time, the company will humiliate the telcos into improving their own networks and, given <a href="http://www.google.com/appserve/fiberrfi/public/overview">Google&#8217;s stated focus on &#8220;openness and choice,&#8221;</a> perhaps even change market dynamics. </p>
<p>But is this plan setting the stage for Google to become a full-fledged network operator? That seems unlikely. Telecom is a low-margin, capital-intensive business. I can&#8217;t imagine that it is very attractive to Google, which can&#8217;t even be bothered to build out a <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20100112/decent-nexus-one-customer-support-apparently-not-on-list-of-things-google-plans-to-make-universally-accessible-and-useful/">viable support system for its new Nexus One smartphone business</a>.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Google this week is taking two dramatic steps to try to catapult devices using its Android mobile operating system into stronger competition with Apple&#8217;s (AAPL) iPhone and Research in Motion&#8217;s (RIMM) BlackBerry in the battle for supremacy in the super-smartphone category.</p>
<p>First, the search giant is bringing out a beautiful, sleek new Android phone, the Nexus One, built to its specifications. Second, it has decided to offer the new phone—and future models—to consumers directly, unlocked, via the Web, and then invite multiple carriers to compete to sell service plans and subsidized versions of the hardware.</p>

<p>One carrier is ready to support the Nexus One on day one: the U.S. arm of T-Mobile, a longstanding Google (GOOG) partner. The new Google Phone, built by HTC of Taiwan, will cost $529 unlocked direct from Google, at google.com/phone. It will cost $179 from T-Mobile online with a two-year contract that will set you back $79.99 a month.</p>
<p>Verizon Wireless (VZ) in the U.S. and Vodafone (VOD) in Europe will sell the Nexus One eventually at subsidized prices that haven&#8217;t yet been announced. All of this will take place on a Google-hosted Web site, a much easier way to buy a phone and service than is typical today, and one that promises to further weaken the power of the carriers.</p>
<p>The company also plans to sell the costlier, unsubsidized version to consumers in the U.K., Hong Kong and Singapore immediately. Like Americans who buy this unlocked version, these customers will have to purchase carrier service separately, something they should be able to obtain right away by just buying and inserting a SIM card from a carrier with compatible technology. (This initial unlocked phone won&#8217;t work with Verizon or Sprint in the U.S., nor on AT&#038;T&#8217;s 3G network, only the latter&#8217;s slower network.) </p>

<p>I&#8217;ve been testing the Nexus One for a couple of weeks and I like it a lot. It&#8217;s the best Android phone so far, in my view, and the first I could consider carrying as my everyday hand-held computer. It is a svelte gray device with a 3.7-inch, high-resolution screen; a thin strip of buttons underneath for home, back, menu and search; and a trackball.</p>
<p>The Nexus One finally has the right combination of hardware and software to give Android a champion that might attract more people away from their iconic iPhones and BlackBerrys. It has a larger screen than Apple&#8217;s phone, and is a bit thinner, narrower and lighter—if a tad longer. And it boasts a better camera and longer talk time between battery charges.</p>
<p>Also, because it will be available on the large, well-regarded Verizon 3G network, the Nexus One could tempt American iPhone users, tired of problems with AT&#038;T (T), to switch.</p>
<p>The iPhone still retains some strong advantages. It boasts well over 100,000 third-party apps—around 125,000 by some unofficial estimates—versus around 18,000 for the Android platform. And it has vastly more memory for storing apps, so you can keep many more of them on your phone at any one time. On the Nexus One, only 190 megabytes of its total 4.5 gigabytes of memory is allowed for storing apps. On the $199 iPhone, nearly all of the 16 gigabytes of memory can be used for apps.</p>
<p>In fact, the $199 iPhone 3GS has roughly four times as much user-accessible memory out of the box, though the memory on the Nexus One can be expanded via memory cards. Apple also has a more-fluid user interface, with multitouch gestures for handling photos and Web pages.</p>
<p>As for the BlackBerry, its user interface looks older and clumsier with each passing day, but it has a beautiful physical keyboard many users love, while the Nexus One has a virtual, onscreen keyboard.</p>

<p>The Nexus One is packed with its own tricks. Its version of Android is essentially the same improved edition as the one that appeared on the Motorola (MOT) Droid back in November. But it has a few new features, including an experimental dictation capability. You just press a microphone icon on the keyboard and start talking, and the words appear. In my tests, this worked only adequately at best, and very poorly at worst, but Google insists it will learn and improve.</p>
<p>The phone also has handsome new visual features, including &#8220;live wallpaper,&#8221; with waving grass or pulsing colored lines; and a new zooming effect when you want to view icons that aren&#8217;t on your main screens. In addition, you can now view miniatures of your five main screens to help you navigate to the one you want.</p>
<p>The Nexus One also has all the key software features introduced in the Droid, including free turn-by-turn voice-prompted navigation.</p>
<p>In my tests, overall, the Nexus One worked very well. The latency I had seen in earlier Android phones is gone, due to a slicker version of the operating system and faster chips. The phone feels good in the hand and the screen is magnificent, with much greater resolution than the iPhone&#8217;s. </p>
<p>I like very much the way social-networking information, including status messages, is integrated into the contacts app. One tap on a person&#8217;s picture in Contacts lets you quickly choose whether to call, email or message her, or map her address—all without opening the contact card itself.</p>
<p>I also liked the pictures and videos I was able to take with the five-megapixel camera and flash, which I preferred to my iPhone&#8217;s camera. You can even view a photo slideshow or listen to music when the phone is in the optional desktop dock.</p>
<p>But there are some downsides to the Nexus One. Like all Android phones, it relies too much, in my view, on menus that create extra steps, including some menus that have a built-in &#8220;more&#8221; button to display a secondary menu of choices.</p>
<p>I also found the four buttons etched into the phone&#8217;s bottom panel sticky and hard to press. In addition, although the Nexus One claims seven hours of talk time versus five hours for the iPhone, most of its battery-life claims for other functions are weaker than Apple&#8217;s. </p>

<p>For instance, Google claims just 6.5 hours of Wi-Fi Web use per charge, versus nine for the iPhone, and 20 for music playback versus 30. Google claims this is because, unlike Apple, it allows the simultaneous use of third-party apps, which can drain the battery faster.</p>
<p>In addition, the Nexus One, and other Android devices, still pale beside the iPhone for playing music, video and games. The apps available for these functions aren&#8217;t nearly as sophisticated as on the Apple devices.</p>
<p>Finally, the iPhone is still a better apps platform. Not only are there more apps, but, in my experience, iPhone apps are generally more polished and come in more varieties. </p>
<p>But, with its fresh phone and bold business model, Google is taking Android to a new level, and that should ramp up the competition in the super-smartphone space.</p>

Which means you must be spending less time on something else. Like reading, perhaps?</p>
<p>Nope. At least not according to a <a href="http://hmi.ucsd.edu/howmuchinfo.php">new study out of the University of California, San Diego</a>, which says reading tripled from 1980 to 2008 &#8220;because it is the overwhelmingly preferred way to receive words on the Internet&#8221;:</p>
<p>From <a href="http://www.wired.com/epicenter/2009/12/reading-expands-study/?utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+mediaredef+%28jason+hirschhorn%27s+Media+ReDEFined%29&amp;utm_content=Google+Reader">Wired</a>&#8216;s summary:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>Americans consumed 3.6 billion terabytes of information last year, averaging 11.8 hours of information consumption per day. Video and videogames constituted 55 percent of those bytes, but on average, Americans read 36 percent of the 100,500 words they consume each day, according to the San Diego study, which analyzed more than 20 data sources. The study doesn’t cover writing, but a simple glance at Facebook feeds reveals that we’re almost certainly writing more than we used to, as well.</p></blockquote>
<p>Obligatory &#8220;to be sure&#8221; graph: To be sure, the study&#8217;s definition of &#8220;reading&#8221; is as broad as possible. So it&#8217;s not just talking about grappling with Pynchon, but many less demanding forms of &#8220;receiving words&#8221; as well. Like skimming this text. Or a text message. Or a tweet. Etc.</p>
<p>Also, there&#8217;s a good chance that you&#8217;re &#8220;reading&#8221; while you&#8217;re watching TV and maybe watching some Web video at the same time. The UC San Diego study allows for lots of multitasking.</p>
<p>Still, this isn&#8217;t bad news, right? As long as you&#8217;re reading, you&#8217;re reading. And the more you read, the better the chances we&#8217;ll avoid an <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0387808/">&#8220;Idiocracy&#8221;</a>-like dystopia.</p>

<p>Where? In Sweden, of course, which is where Spotify started, and which acts as a sort of test lab/best-case-scenario provider for the service.</p>
<p>The company has announced a two-year deal with Telia, a European telco/Internet service provider, &#8220;to work together developing Spotify&#8217;s music service for computers, mobile phones and eventually TV as well.&#8221; No details about what that TV service might be, but the companies say a mobile offering will be available for Swedes within a &#8220;few months.&#8221;</p>
<p>That&#8217;s interesting, since Spotify already has a mobile offering: Subscribers to its premium service can use the company&#8217;s iPhone app, which Apple (AAPL) approved last month. No description of how the new service will differ.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s also worth noting that this is Spotify&#8217;s second deal with a Swedish ISP. It already has a linkup with Bredbandsbolaget, owned by Telenor, a Scandinavian telco, which allows users to bundle their subscription fees with their Internet bills.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s also the only territory where the service has a bundling deal, and industry observers think that tie-up has a great deal to do with the company&#8217;s much talked about success there.</p>
<p>Everywhere else, though, Spotify remains a work in progress. It claims 5.5 million users, but as of last month only about 100,000 of them were paying the company a monthly fee, according to people familiar with the service. It is currently trying to break into the U.S. market, but has been mired in discussions with the big music labels&#8211;the same ones that have licensed the company in Europe&#8211;for months.</p>

In fact, it&#8217;s still growing, says Nielsen: More Americans spent more time watching TV this spring than they did a year ago.</p>
<p>The numbers come from Nielsen&#8217;s quarterly &#8220;Three Screen&#8221; report, which measures eyeballs watching video on TV, on the Web and on mobile devices. And just like <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090520/americans-cant-find-a-screen-they-wont-watch-tv-web-video-both-up/">the report Nielsen put out three months ago</a>, it shows that even while Americans gobble up more online video, they&#8217;re still watching as much TV as they ever have. More, even: The number of viewers increased by 0.9 percent, while the time they spent watching TV increased 1.5 percent.</p>

<p>Two different theories, which are not mutually exclusive, may explain the ever-increasing amount of video we&#8217;re supposedly gorging on:</p>
<ul>
<li>We&#8217;re out of work or underemployed, and we&#8217;re filling those hours with sitcoms and dogs-on-skateboard clips.</li>
<li>We&#8217;re multitasking and gorging on all of this stuff at the same time.</li>
</ul>
<p>On that last theory: Nielsen says 57 percent of us are spending at least an hour a month watching Web video and TV at the same time. We&#8217;re much more likely to turn on the TV while we&#8217;re Web-surfing than vice versa, though.</p>

<p>No surprise, by the way, to see that people are spending more time watching Web video. But interesting to note that while the universe of mobile video watchers has increased, they&#8217;re spending less time watching.</p>
<p>For what it&#8217;s worth, Nielsen says that short-form clips&#8211;like those from Google&#8217;s (GOOG) YouTube&#8211;make up 83 percent of Web video viewing, while &#8220;name-brand TV network content&#8221; makes up the majority of mobile video. Note that Hulu, the joint venture between News Corp.&#8217;s (NWS) Fox, GE&#8217;s (GE) NBC and Disney&#8217;s (DIS) ABC, doesn&#8217;t have a mobile option, so it can&#8217;t claim credit for those eyeballs.</p>
<p>Too many numbers! Time for video. Here&#8217;s a clip of the Minnesota Vikings&#8217; (!) Brett Favre from this week&#8217;s &#8220;Monday Night Football&#8221; game. This one has been seen more than half a million times, but there&#8217;s no way it&#8217;s legal. So it will go down sooner or later&#8211;both the NFL and ESPN are pretty zealous about this stuff.</p>
<p>But right now it&#8217;s promoted for all to see on YouTube&#8217;s homepage. Which means there are still some kinks in the company&#8217;s vaunted &#8220;ContentID&#8221; program.</p>

<p>It&#8217;s going to be a rough couple of months for the wireless industry.</p>
<p>As <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090821/wireless-industry-attorneys-stack-up-on-nodoz-frozen-pizzas/">expected</a>, the Federal Communications Commission on Thursday <a href="http://hraunfoss.fcc.gov/edocs_public/attachmatch/DOC-293118A2.pdf">approved</a> a broad inquiry into the wireless market. In a unanimous vote, the agency&#8217;s five commissioners&#8211;three Democrats and two Republicans&#8211;approved two so-called notices of inquiry, <a href="http://hraunfoss.fcc.gov/edocs_public/attachmatch/DOC-293120A1.pdf">one that will examine competition and innovation</a> and <a href="http://hraunfoss.fcc.gov/edocs_public/attachmatch/DOC-293117A1.pdf">another that will evaluate truth-in-billing practices</a>.</p>
<p>&#8220;I can&#8217;t think of a more important moment to be considering these issues,&#8221; FCC chairman Julius Genachowski told a hearing in Washington. &#8220;Many Americans are learning to do more with less. A surprise charge on a monthly bill, or a new service that does not perform as advertised, can be a major budget-buster, especially as household spending on communications grows ever larger. This FCC will have a relentless focus on innovation and investment, on competition and consumers.”</p>
<p>Genachowski added that these inquiries could lay the groundwork for the examination of other industries such as cable and Internet. &#8220;I hope the new wireless competition report will help set a standard for fact-based, analytically deep analysis of the mobile industry,&#8221; he said. &#8220;It is essential that the commission develop policies that encourage a new generation of innovators, working with new tools, on new platforms, and having an extraordinary impact on our economy and society.&#8221;</p>
<p>The wireless industry&#8217;s trade group, CTIA, welcomed the inquiry through gritted teeth, saying  it &#8220;appreciates the opportunity to respond&#8221; to the FCC’s questions. &#8220;The wireless ecosystem&#8211;from carriers to handset manufacturers to network providers to operating-system providers to application developers&#8211;is evolving before our eyes and this is not the same market that it was even three years ago,” said president and chief executive Steve Largent. &#8220;In this industry, innovation is everywhere.&#8221;</p>

<p>Priceline (PCLN) this morning posted Q2 revenue of $603.7 million, well ahead of the Street consensus of $575.1 million, with pro forma profits of $2.02 a share, crushing the Street at $1.75. Gross travel bookings in the quarter were $2.38 billion, up 12.8 percent from a year ago. Pro forma EBITDA was $126.2 million, up 24.6 percent year over year.</p>
<p>In a statement, the company said that despite the recession, “leisure travel demand for the summer peak season has been stronger than expected, driven in part by the availability of compelling discounts.”</p>

After all, you’d have to be pretty dim to text while driving, a practice that widespread research and more than a few fatal accidents have proven to be a dangerous distraction. My God, people can’t even <em>walk</em> and text at the same time.</p>
<p>According to a new survey from Vlingo, a company that develops speech-recognition technology for mobile phones, <a href="http://news.idg.no/cw/art.cfm?id=5F0E1F9B-1A64-6A71-CE9B7CDBC34C12E0">26 percent of its nationwide sample of 4,816 mobile phone users said they sent texts while driving</a>. This despite laws against Driving While Texting in some seven states and <a href="http://www.boston.com/news/local/breaking_news/2009/05/ems_49_taken_to.html">some nasty DWT-related accidents</a>. The states with the highest percentage of DWT drivers: Tennessee (42 percent), New Jersey (35 percent), Alabama (34), Idaho (33) and Oklahoma (31.7).</p>
<p>Ironically, 83 percent of the people surveyed said they feel texting while driving should be illegal.</p>
<p>“In just one year, the public conversation about the issue of DWT has escalated, particularly in the wake of some high-profile accidents,” <a href="http://vlingo.com/pdf/Vlingo%20DWT%20FINAL.pdf">Dave Grannan, chief executive of Vlingo, said in a statement</a>. “Texting is such an integral component of our daily lives, and the cautionary tales about DWT danger have not stemmed the tide. We predicted last year that this problem would get worse, and it has since more people are texting. The good news is that many state legislatures are starting to take up this issue, and today more advanced technologies exist that can increase safety on the roads.”</p>
<p>My God, if one in four drivers admit to driving while texting, how many more were too ashamed to?</p>
