Google had some mighty high expectations for Android tablets back in 2010.

Google had some mighty high expectations for Android tablets back in 2010.

According to a quarterly Android review presented in 2010 and uncovered by The Verge, Google expected to sell 10 million Android tablets in 2011 and capture a 33 percent share of the market. In 2012, it expected to sell another 10 million for a 22 percent share.

At the time, those might have seemed like reasonable estimates, but history has proven them to be a tad over-optimistic. Speaking at our AsiaD conference last October, Google’s Andy Rubin said there were a little more than six million Android tablets in the wild at that time. That being a cumulative number, it’s well short of the 10 million Android tablets sold per year Google had hoped for.

So in the end, Google failed to capture the 33 percent share of the tablet market to which it had aspired in 2011. And according to Gartner, it won’t quite hit that mark this year either, though it will surpass the 22 percent share first projected. In 2012, the research house expects Android tablets to account for 31.9 percent of the market – though that’s including Amazon’s Kindle Fire, which runs a forked version of the OS.

Andy Rubin, Google’s senior vice president of mobile, was shown during his testimony at a trial in San Francisco a series of emails he wrote about six years ago advising others at Google that the company should buy the right to use Sun Microsystems’ Java technology in Android.

The CEOs of both companies are on the witness list for a patent and copyright case that could have some far-reaching implications.

On Monday, what is being described as the “World Series of intellectual property trials” will get under way with jury selection in a federal court in San Francisco.

The parties are the software giant Oracle and the Internet concern Google. At issue is Java, the software platform Oracle became owner of when it acquired Sun Microsystems in 2010. And the witness list will be interesting: Both Google CEO Larry Page and Oracle CEO Larry Ellison are expected to take the witness stand during the trial; as will former Sun CEO Jonathan Schwartz and Andy Rubin, the Google senior vice president who runs its Android and mobile operations.

The allegations are fairly simple, but the case could have some significant impact if Oracle prevails in some of its arguments. Oracle sued Google in the summer of 2010, alleging that the Android mobile operating system violated seven different Java patents.

Five of those patents have since been tossed out since they were reexamined, leaving two. That reduces the potential amount of damages that Oracle might be entitled to, should it prevail. Google even went so far as to offer to cut Oracle in on Android and $2.8 million in damages, in the event that it prevails. Oracle declined.

The other issue, and the one that has the potential for more lasting impact, is over copyright. Oracle will argue in court that Google violated copyrights on Java. Specifically, Oracle alleges that when Google was creating Android, it copied a lot of material — more than 37 Java application programming interfaces (APIs), and 11 lines of Java source code — and that these are subject to copyright protection like other intellectual property.

This is a new and controversial legal argument that has software developers watching the trial closely. Google has argued that APIs shouldn’t be subject to copyright protection, because they’re more akin to tools and techniques that programmers use to build software. I may be simplifying it a little too much here, but one way of thinking might be to ask if it’s possible to copyright the technique and instructions for hammering a nail or fitting a door.

Google has argued that APIs and programming languages aren’t entitled to copyright protection, for exactly that reason: You can copyright a given program because it’s unique, but you can’t copyright the language it’s written in. Perhaps I’m straining my skills at analogy here, but the way I understand Google’s argument, as put forth in an April 12 brief, is that you can copyright “So What?” but you can’t copyright “jazz.”

As Google puts it in that brief, which is the first two of two legal filings I’ve embedded below:

“That is a classic attempt to improperly assert copyright over an idea rather than expression.” And earlier in the brief, it argues: “Without a computer programming language, the set of statements or instructions cannot be understood by the computer. As such, a computer language is inherently a utilitarian, nonprotectable means by which computers operate. … The protectable material is the computer program (the set of statements or instructions); the unprotectable material is the method or system (the language). So understood, original computer programs may be protected, but the medium for expression in which they are created is not.”

For its part, Oracle outlined its position on the issue in a trial brief filed on April 5, which is the second of the two documents embedded below. Here’s a meaty paragraph summing it up:

“Allowing copyright protection for computer interfaces makes sense because original expressions in software are innovations of an incremental sort that Congress meant to encourage. Trade secrecy law cannot achieve this goal because interfaces can be reverse-engineered. Patent law, because of its novelty and non-obviousness requirements and examination process, protects those substantial innovations, claimed as broadly and generically as possible, and in return gives strong protection against even those who independently develop the same technology. Copyright law protects innovations at a much finer level of detail (where original expression can be found) than patents ever could, but only offers protection against the copyist.”

Obviously, it’s going to be an interesting trial, provided the parties don’t find some way to settle before it’s all over. They tried settlement talks once. It didn’t work.

Oracle has put a potential dollar value on the damages it may claim in its Java-related patent infringement case against Google over its Android operating system. And it's a very large number.

Oracle has put a potential dollar value on the damages it may claim in its Java-related patent infringement case against Google over its Android operating system. And it’s a very large number.

Noting that some 700,000 Android devices are activated every day — each one built around Oracle’s copyrighted Java APIs — the company figures “each day’s worth of activations likely generates approximately $10 million in annual mobile advertising revenue for Google.”

So $3.65 billion — which is over $1 billion more than the $2.5 billion Google claimed Android was generating in ad revenues last October.

Why the discrepancy? That’s tough to say, as Oracle doesn’t explain the calculation used to arrive at that figure or the numbers it plugged into it, aside from the 700,000 Android activations per day metric that was provided by Android boss Andy Rubin last December. Over at FOSS Patents, Florian Mueller speculates that Oracle’s number is based on the assumption of annual advertising revenues of $14 per Android user, though again no rationale for it is offered.

In any event, $3.65 billion is a far cry from the up to $6.1 billion in damages Oracle has claimed Google could owe it for the alleged violations, though that first sum doesn’t reflect Android’s full value. Said Oracle, “This revenue does not even include all the other value Android generates for Google, ranging from Android Market revenue, to other Android-related services, to ensuring that Google will not be locked out of the mobile business, to lucrative relationships with manufacturers of myriad devices on which Android can and does run, to the inordinately valuable access Android provides to customers for its new social network service, Google+.”

UPDATE: Looks like that $2.5 billion run rate I mentioned earlier is not exclusive to Android. Rather, it includes all mobile revenues. So the discrepancy between Oracle’s number and revenue generated by Android is even larger than originally though.

Android overtook Apple's iOS in the mobile market over the holidays, according to analytics outfit Chitika.

Another metric with which to measure the Android/iOS horse race.

Online advertising network Chitika recently took a look at holiday ad impressions and noted an interesting reversal. In November, Apple’s iOS mobile operating system dominated its network, generating 51.7 percent of the ad traffic on it to Android’s 46.1 percent.

And in December, the two OSes traded places. Android ascended to the lead, claiming a 51.6 percent share of Chitika’s traffic, while iOS slipped to 46.5 percent.

That’s a noteworthy reversal, one likely driven by the bevy of Android handsets gifted over the holidays. As Android chief Andy Rubin claimed in a Dec. 28 tweet, some 3.7 million Android devices were activated over Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

But presumably there were quite a few iPhones given over the holidays, as well. So how is it that Android managed to unseat iOS?

Chitika chalks it up to Android’s openness, which enables a broad presence on a growing number of mobile devices made by a wide variety of manufacturers. That certainly makes sense. But there’s another factor to consider here, as well.

Chitika’s metrics are based on ad impressions. And Android offers significantly more free apps than does iOS. Many are ad-supported. In fact, according to Distimo roughly two-thirds of the apps in the Android Market are available for free. Could it be that Chitika is seeing more Android-related ad traffic on its network simply because Android has more ad-supported apps?

Rubin, who uses his Twitter account mainly to call attention to Android momentum statistics, noted on Dec. 20 that Android activations had reached a rate of 700,000 per day.

Clearly, though, the holidays are a busy time for all devices, not just Android.

Flurry Analytics estimated a total of 6.8 million Android and iOS devices were activated on Christmas Day alone. Assuming both its numbers and Google’s are accurate, that means Apple had quite the holiday, as well. It will be interesting to see if Cupertino comments at all on what it has seen this holiday season.

On the app side, Flurry projected that there were 242 million app downloads for Android and iOS, up from an average of just more than 100 million app downloads a day during a typical 24-hour period earlier in the month.

At least one mobile industry CEO sees that rate more than tripling by the end of next year -- to a whopping 2.5 million per day.

On Tuesday night, Android chief Andy Rubin noted that Google is now seeing 700,000 daily activations of new devices using its operating system.

That’s up from the 550,000 activations-per-day figure touted in July, and 300,000 per day mentioned a year ago.

And that could be just the start. Appitalism CEO Simon Buckingham predicts that, by the end of next year, daily activations could reach an astronomical 2.5 million per day — a run rate of more than 900 million a year.

“My view is it is just going to accelerate,” Buckingham said in an interview. While he acknowledged that is a pretty aggressive target, he maintains that it is achievable, given the momentum behind the operating system and its expansion into emerging markets and to other devices, including tablets and televisions.

That’s one of several predictions Buckingham is making as the year draws to a close. He also sees RIM as likely to sign a Nokia-style deal with Microsoft and adopt Windows Phone.

Other predictions on his list include a continued proliferation of native apps despite all the hype around HTML5, as well as a failure by Windows Phone to gain a significant share of the market — even with RIM as a potential partner.

“Fundamentally, everything Microsoft does still is around getting back to the PC and getting back to their core Windows and Office franchises, or Xbox, even,” Buckingham said. “That’s part of the problem.”

Google, which tried to launch a music service earlier this year but couldn't get all of the big music labels on board, is ready to try it again. But it still doesn't have all of the big music labels on board.

Google, which tried to launch a music service earlier this year but couldn’t get all of the big music labels on board, is ready to try it again. But it still doesn’t have all of the big music labels on board.

The search giant has sent out invitations to a “special event” in Los Angeles next Wednesday, (supposedly from Spinal Tap <del>bassist</del> [Doh! Lead guitarist, that is.]Nigel Tufnel, which is a calendar joke). Every indication is that it will be to launch Google Music — a service that’s supposed to include both a store and a limited sharing capability, tied to its Google+ social initiative.

But as of now Google hasn’t convinced all four of the big music labels to come on board.

Google has EMI Music, the smallest of the big four, locked up. And industry executives I’ve talked to believe that Universal Music Group, the world’s biggest label, is also signed up or will be very soon.

But people familiar with the labels tell me that Sony and Warner Music Group haven’t lined up deals yet, and they’re skeptical that both will be locked in by Wednesday. (Apple, meanwhile, looks like it’s finally ready to show off iTunes Match, its new $25-a-year music service.)

That runs counter to the confidence that Andy Rubin expressed last month, when he told the audience at the AsiaD conference that he was “close” to launching a music service “with a twist.” My hunch is that Google feels the invitations will be a forcing event that will speed negotiations up.

Or perhaps Google feels that some music labels are better than none, and it can add the stragglers in after it launches.

Conventional wisdom in the music business is that you can’t launch a service without three of the big four signed up (Spotify waited to lock up all four before coming to the U.S.). But Google has shown in the past that it’s quite willing to put stuff out there before it’s fully baked. Perhaps this is another one of those.

Siri may still be working to find her voice, but Apple's young assistant shows a ton of promise.

Sure, she may be a bit flighty, and she only knows how to answer a few questions. But don’t let Siri’s youthful shortcomings fool you.

Apple’s personal assistant, which debuted on the iPhone 4S, shows the qualities one wants in an assistant. What she lacks in know-how and dependability, she makes up for by being whip-smart, a quick study and even a bit of a wiseass.

Google’s Andy Rubin may be publicly dismissive, but both Google and Microsoft also know that voice will be the key input method in the future — especially on the phone, with its touchscreen keyboards, even the best of which are still a pain today.

Siri already shows flashes of brilliance. While the assistant app only does a handful of tasks, one can ask those to be done in almost any construction and she will hammer away. Ask her the weather and she will tell you; ask how hot it is, or whether you need an umbrella or sunscreen, and she will tell you that as well.

It is only a matter of time before Apple expands her repertoire to handle more tasks. The company said as much during the announcement of Siri, saying she would be slapped with a beta tag until she finished her training and her foreign-language requirement.

In the meantime, Google and Microsoft are investing heavily in speech, as well. Microsoft spent a fair chunk of change buying Tellme a few years back, and has been working to make it a key component of Windows Phone and the Kinect, among other products. Google, meanwhile, has already built a series of “voice actions” into Android, and one can expect it to expand those efforts.

That said, Apple would be well-served to get its servers performing better. Siri has been frequently inaccessible since her launch. And while everyone likes a smart assistant, those who can’t reliably fetch coffee can find themselves quickly unemployed.

Running a cable TV operation is an expensive, messy, un-Googley business. Which is why there's no way Larry Page is going to do that, says Sanford Bernstein.

Google, which is launching a broadband service in Kansas City, has been thinking about adding cable TV to its offering there, The Wall Street Journal reports. The search giant has been talking to the likes of Time Warner and Disney about deals to carry some of their TV channels along with high-speed Internet.

But before you envision the rollout of a nationwide Google pay TV service, consider: Building out and maintaining a cable TV (and broadband) service is enormously time-consuming, expensive and messy.

Think, for example, of all those angry/confused service inquiries your local cable guy has to deal with. And recall that last year, when Google tried to sell its own line of smartphones, it was hoping to get by without setting up a customer service operation that gave buyers the ability to talk to a real live human.

Verizon spent some $23 billion on its FiOS rollout, and by the time it stalled out last year, it still wasn’t clear if it was a good idea for the telco to build out a cable/broadband service. So why does Larry Page think it makes sense for him?

He doesn’t, according to Sanford Bernstein analysts Craig Moffett and Carlos Kirjner in a note this morning. Instead, they argue, Page and Google have to be thinking about Kansas City as an R&D experiment meant to accomplish three things:

First, it helps Google (slightly) on the public policy front as it promotes the agenda of faster broadband, and it potentially adds to their status in promoting net neutrality. Faster broadband means more Internet usage, more searches, and more ads. Of course, the real regulatory game is a few orders of magnitude more sophisticated, but every little arrow in the quiver helps.

Second, it is a laboratory for Google to learn about technology and consumer behavior, ranging from the impact of higher speed access on Internet usage to the potential and economics of different ad formats and models, on different platforms, particularly when it comes to advertising associated with video and TV.

Third, it is an opportunity for Google to learn about the economics of deploying and running infrastructure. And learn they will…

Analysts like to pull their punches, but Moffett and Kirjner are crystal clear here: There’s no way they think Google becomes the “world’s biggest cable company” or anything like that.

Just to beat this into the ground, here’s another excerpt from their report (well worth reading the whole thing) where they spell out just how ugly the economics of this kind of venture would be:

From a [return on invested capital]-based perspective, the difference between Google’s current business model and that of a facilities-based wireline service provider like Verizon could not be starker. In 2011, we expect Google to post an ROIC of 56%, or 38% when including goodwill. In 2010, Verizon’s wireline segment (which includes FiOS) sported an ROIC excluding goodwill and “one-time items” of… wait for it… just 1.6%. Including goodwill and similar intangible, and smoothed one-timers, it was -1.0%.

Still. It’s quite obvious that something has changed in Google’s thinking over the years.

The company that strove to stay away from anything approaching the content business has now leapt in with both feet. See, for example: Google Music, Google Books, YouTube, and YouTube’s new “channels” project. And recall that Google just made a plus-sized bid for Hulu.

So the notion that Google is now willing to consider even testing out life as a cable TV service is still telling. As is the notion, buried lower in the Journal piece, that Google has floated the idea of turning YouTube into an “over the top” cable service, though that doesn’t seem like it’s on the table right now.

Android boss Andy Rubin even spelled it out at the AsiaD conference in Hong Kong last month: “Google is in the very, very early phases of adding consumer products to our portfolio.” So even if that doesn’t mean it’s ready to become a cable guy, it’s still going to evolve into something much broader than a search company.

Today, we start posting the full videos from the recent AsiaD conference, which took place in Hong Kong earlier in October.

Over the next two weeks, we’re going to follow the schedule of the actual event, starting with the opening-night speaker, Google Android head Andy Rubin.

In this wide-ranging onstage interview with Walt Mossberg, Rubin talks about an array of mobile topics, including: Ice Cream Sandwich, which is Android 4.0; Google’s launch of the new Galaxy Nexus, the next-generation lead device, with its partner Samsung; Google’s upcoming music store; the integration to its pending acquisition of Motorola; and the impact of Apple’s Steve Jobs on technology.

And there’s a lot more from Rubin, so click away:

In an interview, Rubin says that his philosophy is that a phone should be a tool for connecting people to each other, not for replacing human interaction.

Andy Rubin thinks there is a lot of potential for phones to be more useful companions, but says he is not interested in turning Android devices into personal assistants.

“I don’t believe that your phone should be an assistant,” the Android chief said in an interview on Wednesday just after appearing on stage at AsiaD. “Your phone is a tool for communicating. You shouldn’t be communicating with the phone; you should be communicating with somebody on the other side of the phone.”

Of course, several million people have already gone out and bought the iPhone 4S, which has as one of its chief selling points the voice-controlled assistant known as Siri.

Rubin said the jury is still out on whether people will take to talking to their phones to control them.

“To some degree it is natural for you to talk to your phone,” Rubin said, but historically that has meant talking to another person. As for talking to your phone without actually trying to connect to another person, Rubin says he’s not so sure. “We’ll see how pervasive it gets.”

Rubin noted that one of his Android co-founders, Rich Miner, had a cellphone speech company called Wildfire, while General Magic also pursued the idea.

“This isn’t a new notion,” he said. “In projecting the future, I think Apple did a good job of figuring out when the technology was ready to be consumer-grade.”

In an interview after his onstage appearance at AsiaD, Google's mobile chief talks about Android's new look as well as its future on screens of all sizes.

It turns out that ice cream isn’t the only dairy product the Android team has been working on.

The big focus with the new version of Android was on improving the user interface, Google’s mobile chief Andy Rubin said in an interview on Wednesday. That interface, which builds on the holographic look that debuted with Honeycomb, was designed to be like butter.

“We want everything to be smooth as butter,” Rubin said. In addition to the new look, Rubin said the software includes all kinds of other features, from being able to control music from the lock screen to allowing developers to tap the phone’s graphic processor for image-intensive tasks.

The other big goal of Android 4.0, of course, was to unify the tablet and phone versions of the operating system. Google offered the first look at Ice Cream Sandwich on Wednesday at an event with Samsung, where the two companies announced the Galaxy Nexus, which will be the first device running the new software. Other devices will follow within weeks after that one, Rubin said.

While Andy Rubin is most focused on getting Android running on as many phones, TVs and tablets as possible, he sees opportunities well beyond that.

Already, he notes, the operating system has spread to watches from Motorola and car dashboards from Mercedes.

“Tell me what screen Android shouldn’t be on,” Rubin said, speaking to AllThingsD just after he finished his onstage appearance at AsiaD in Hong Kong.

Virtually any screen can be better if it is running Android, he insists. There are actually only two screens where Rubin says he doesn’t want to see Android: Nuclear reactors and weapons systems. (And the licensing terms already prohibit those, he notes.)

I’ll have more from my interview with Rubin, including his thoughts on Apple’s Siri, in a follow-up post shortly.

AsiaD, the inaugural international expansion of our D: All Things Digital conference, kicked off in Hong Kong Wednesday evening with a wide-ranging interview with Google mobile chief Andy Rubin. Fresh off the launch of Ice Cream Sandwich, the latest iteration of Google’s Android operating system — and the Galaxy Nexus, the flagship handset running it — Rubin had plenty to talk about. Below, video highlights from the session:

"I don't think you should consider Google's acquisition of Motorola as Google entering the hardware business."

When Google acquired Motorola Mobility, the search giant insisted other Android manufacturers had nothing to worry about. It would run Motorola as an entirely separate unit, granting it no special privileges. During a Wednesday evening interview at AsiaD, Google mobile chief Andy Rubin reiterated this claim, saying the company didn’t buy Motorola for its hardware, but for its patents.

“I’m focused on delighting a lot of consumers, but there are other folks focused on putting me out of business,” Rubin said, suggesting that Motorola’s patent portfolio will be a potent weapon in the intellectual property spats that riddle the mobile industry these days.

As for the hardware business, Rubin reiterated that a Google-owned Motorola would operate “at arm’s length” from its Android unit.

“I don’t think you should consider Google’s acquisition of Motorola as Google entering the hardware business,” Rubin said. “This is going to be an arm’s-length thing … Motorola isn’t going to get any special treatment.”

What took so long? Andy Rubin offers a new explanation: He says Google is no longer just a search company, but that the big media companies took a while to figure that out.

Google worked for a long time to get a music store/service up and running with the blessing of the big music labels. Last spring, all of that broke down, so Google launched a cloud-based music locker on its own.

But Google is finally close to launching a music service with help from the labels, Android boss Andy Rubin said today, confirming earlier reports for the first time. When? “I think we’re close,” Rubin said onstage at the AsiaD conference in Hong Kong.

Both Amazon and Apple already sell music and offer cloud lockers, but Rubin promised that Google’s version “will have a little twist – it will have a little Google in it. It won’t just be selling 99-cent tracks.”

Still, Google needs all of the big labels on board, and the most recent reports said only EMI Music was close to a final deal. So, “close” could be a relative term.

Meanwhile, about those earlier label deals. Why did they fall apart, anyway?

Rather than accuse the labels of taking an unreasonable stance, as Google executives have previously done, Rubin takes a new tack — he says media companies in general haven’t been able to figure out what Google is up to. Just like Steve Jobs’s company used to be called “Apple Computer” and evolved into “Apple,” he says, Google is morphing, as well.

“Google is in the very, very early phases of adding consumer products to our portfolio,” he said. “The media industry didn’t see us as that. They saw us a search company.”

You can connect some dots here and make an educated guess: Rubin is probably referencing media companies’ insistence that Google help them fight piracy by making some sites harder to find. And the search giant has complied, to some degree. But there’s likely more to the story than that.

Will Apple lose its way following the passing of co-founder Steve Jobs? Google mobile kingpin Andy Rubin doesn't think so.

What will become of Apple without Steve Jobs, its charismatic founder? Might it lose its way or its edge following Jobs’s death?

Google mobile kingpin Andy Rubin doesn’t think so.

During a Wednesday evening interview at AsiaD, Rubin, a former Apple employee, said he was confident that Apple will remain the innovator it has always been, even without its co-founder’s day-to-day leadership.

“Will Apple lose step with Steve’s passing? I don’t think so,” said Rubin. “The DNA in the people walking the halls at Apple is a very powerful combination of the arts and computer science, and I don’t think that’s changed with Steve’s passing. That combination of creativity and computer science, it’s still there. … Obviously, Steve had a big role at Apple and I think he gave guidance to a lot of the employees, but now it’s time for some of the other guys to kind of step up and demonstrate that they can do the creative plus computer science.”

Fresh from debuting Ice Cream Sandwich, the Android chief sits down with Walt Mossberg at AsiaD to talk about Google's mobile future.

At AllThingsD, we like to eat our dessert first.

That’s why we’re kicking off AsiaD with a little Ice Cream Sandwich. Google mobile chief Andy Rubin is taking the stage with Walt Mossberg to talk about the future of Android, just hours after unwrapping the latest version here in Hong Kong.

Rubin is just one of the many mobile-focused speakers here at the show, which will also include talks with Windows Phone head Andy Lees, along with executives from Samsung and HTC. Rubin is due to start speaking just after 6 pm local time. (That’s 3 am for you West Coast types, and 6 am on the East Coast.)

5:50 pm: Folks are just getting their seats, so feel free to do the same.

5:58 pm: Two-minute warning. And you have no time-outs left.

6:02 pm: Don’t worry folks. Still here. Just finishing up my bubble tea as the guests get seated. You probably have a couple minutes to grab a beverage yourselves, if you want.

6:08 pm: Um, still waiting.

What to do.

“Siri: Do you know a joke?”

“Two iPhones walk into a bar … I forget the rest.”

6:11 pm: Welcoming remarks are starting.

6:13 pm: The chief secretary of Hong Kong is on stage, and there is a very loud lion dance making its way through the tables in the convention hall.

6:17 pm: Lions still dancing. There will be ice cream. I promise.

6:19 pm: Walt Mossberg takes the stage.

“It’s the first time I’ve ever followed that kind of act,” Mossberg said.

6:19 pm: Apple’s Phil Schiller won’t be appearing at the conference, Mossberg notes, as he needs to be at the Steve Jobs memorial at Apple’s campus on Wednesday.

6:22 pm: And now, Andy Rubin …

6:26 pm: Mossberg: You had a big event here in Hong Kong as well today.

Rubin: With our partner Samsung, we launched the Galaxy Nexus, which is our next-generation lead device with Android 4.0 — Ice Cream Sandwich.

6:27 pm: Rubin is explaining what makes a “Nexus” phone, as opposed to any old Android phone. Basically, Google gets deeply involved in the design, working with the hardware maker and the chipmakers.

Rubin notes there are over a million lines of code in Android.

“You don’t want to build it generically and then throw it over the fence.”

“I look it as a reference design,” Rubin said of the lead device.

6:29 pm: Rubin explaining how Ice Cream Sandwich reunifies the tablet and phone versions of Android.

Android 4.0 will support both phones and tablets.

There’s a notion of fragments, introduced in Honeycomb, that lets apps run in different configurations for screen sizes.

Walt noted that Rubin said a year ago that Android was still for geeks, and maybe their spouses. Honeycomb was a little better about surfacing the hidden technology, Walt said. How does Ice Cream Sandwich stack up?

Rubin said the company has always been trying to improve the user interface.

“We want it to be intuitive,” Rubin said, saying Android devices should be an extension of people’s daily lives, and the company aims to keep getting closer to that goal.

“Ice Cream Sandwich is the best we’ve ever done,” Rubin said.

6:34 pm: Rubin is now showing off the just-introduced Galaxy Nexus, which bears both the Samsung and Google logos. It’s got a Texas Instruments processor and a sensor to tell how high off the ground it is, among other hardware features.

One of the features is the ability to unlock the phone using facial recognition (a demo that didn’t go so hot).

6:37 pm:

“We’re going to try it again here,” Rubin said. “Let’s see if this works.”

And it does.

“Hi, Andy,” the phone said.

Rubin notes the technology came from a recent acquisition.

6:38 pm: Now Walt is giving it a try.

“Sorry, don’t recognize you,” the phone tells Walt.

The Android phone is actually using the graphics chip on the phone rather than the main processor to do the facial recognition, Rubin notes.

Now Rubin is showing the phone doing some real-time effects on the camera, distorting Walt’s face in various ways.

“This will all reflect on the review,” Walt said.

The effects are similar to those found in desktop software for a while now.

6:42 pm: Let’s talk about competition.

Who’s your main competition?

Rubin doesn’t really answer directly.

“Maybe you need the translator,” Walt quipped.

“I guess my competitors would be anybody who is in the platform business. Apple builds an operating system. Microsoft builds an operating system.”

What’s your sense about RIM?

“I think they’re very smart. They’re Canadian.”

Rubin said he went there once and they were completely vertical, building their own antennas and even building whole phones in Canada. “There’s a lot to be said about that approach,” he said, noting it eliminates a lot of dependencies.

“The problem with it is it limits agility,” he said.

I think it is real easy to retool. They acquired QNX so they have some future they can seize.

6:46 pm: Are you, as a competitor of Apple, thinking they will lose a step with the death of Steve Jobs?, Walt asked.

“I don’t think anything like that,” Rubin said. “I used to work at Apple,” he said, noting it was his first big job.

Rubin noted that Apple still has the same ingredients that have made it a success, though it will miss Steve’s leadership. “Now it is time for some of the other guys to step up.”

6:48 pm: Asked about Windows Phone, Rubin noted that Microsoft did what smart companies do when they are late or behind in a market, which is to innovate on a different axis.

“I think that’s what Microsoft did with their Metro UI,” he said. “I think it is a bold move.”

That said, “from my taste and my perspective, it could be very dangerous for Microsoft,” he said. He suggested that Windows Phone leaves less room for creativity and for software and hardware makers to express themselves.

“If you want to take over the screen, you should be able to take over the screen,” Rubin said.

Rubin said it is kind of like what happened on the PC, which left hardware makers creating something of a commodity.

6:52 pm: “How come Android tablets have completely flopped in the marketplace?”

“I wouldn’t say completely flopped,” Rubin said.

Rubin said there are a little more than six million Android tablets out there running Google’s services, not counting other tablets (such as Barnes & Noble’s Nook Color)

“Six million is pretty healthy, but it is not 30 million,” he said. “Obviously, we need to get there.”

6:55 pm: Walt: When are you going to sell music?

“Today, it’s not there,” he said.

6:56 pm: “I feel we are close,” Rubin said of being able to offer some sort of music acquisition service — sales or subscription. “It will have a little twist … it won’t be just selling 99-cent songs.”

But others have gone in during the time that Google was unable to reach a deal with Hollywood and the record companies, Walt noted, point out that device makers such as Samsung now sell content on their own. “Obviously, people went in and they filled the gap,” Rubin said.

6:59 pm: Walt asked about tablets such as the Kindle Fire and Grid 10 that use Android under the hood, but do their own thing and hide Android from the user.

How do you feel about that? Is it good for Google?

Rubin: “I create an open operating system and somebody uses it. Am I okay with that?”

On Kindle Fire: “I think it is fine for Google. It is Android. It adheres to the APIs of Android.”

“I don’t view this as some kind of walled garden.” Rubin noted that Google can even create programs for Amazon tablets.

“Maybe this is going to solve the tablet problem,” he said.

7:03 pm: Walt is trying to get Andy Rubin to confirm that Galaxy Nexus will launch on Verizon first. Rubin doesn’t bite.

As for when Ice Cream Sandwich will show up on other Android devices, Rubin said it will be a matter of weeks after the Samsung device.

7:04 pm: Why should other Android makers not worry about Google buying Motorola?

Rubin: Part of it is clearly about patents. I’m focused on delighting a lot of consumers, but there are other folks focused on putting me out of business.

As for the hardware business, Rubin reiterated that a Google-owned Motorola would operate “at arm’s length” from the Android unit.

7:07 pm: On to Q&A.

First question is on how Google will protect app developers and others from patent issues.

Rubin: “In general, if we achieve patent peace where people aren’t suing each other for competitive advantage … that’s my goal.”

Rubin notes that there are mechanisms to license the patents for GSM and for MP3 and that would be a nice model to see for smartphones.

“It would be beautiful, in my view, if there was one clearinghouse to get all these rights,” he said.

7:11 pm: On Android Market

“It’s getting a lot better,” Rubin said, noting that the site finally uses Google’s actual search technology to find more relevant apps. “It’s going to get better exponentially very soon.”

Rubin acknowledged it hasn’t always been as good as it should have been.

“I recognize that we were a little behind.”

7:13 pm: Rubin on HTML5:

It’s not yet an alternative to building separate apps for different mobile operating systems.

“That would be the holy grail,” Rubin said, but it’s probably a way off.

7:17 pm: One of the pain points of Honeycomb has been the lack of tablet apps. When are we going to see ICS coming to tablets?

Rubin said he doesn’t think there should be apps specific for a tablet, necessarily. With Ice Cream Sandwich, Rubin said, all apps will run great on tablets.

Going forward, I think it would be wrong to make that distinction.

7:23 pm: Last question. Going to the digital home, what about televisions? How can we possibly see a single app working on phones, TVs and tablets?

Google TV is a product that exists, and it’s Android. The 2.0 version of Google TV is Honeycomb-based. There are differences, he said. TV is relatively passive. But Android can tie all of those together.

7:25 pm: And that’s a wrap for the keynote. I’ll have more later from Andy Rubin.

And so our international expansion of D: All Thing Digital starts and we could not be more proud that it begins here in Hong Kong, with AsiaD. So why Asia? It seemed the most obvious choice for us, as we looked at the global landscape for tech.

And so our international expansion of D: All Thing Digital starts and we could not be more proud that it begins here in Hong Kong, with AsiaD.

So why Asia? It seemed the most obvious choice for us, as we looked at the global landscape for tech. While the whole world has now been engulfed in the powerful trends of digitalization, perhaps nowhere else has been as important a place for understanding where it is headed next than this region, which is home to companies critical to the next phase of innovation.

There’s no question that Silicon Valley, which has been the base for most of the key players — such as Google, Apple, Facebook and more — has driven the digital revolution over the past decade. But as we look out onto what’s to come, it’s clear to us and many others that what’s coming next and even the next great company might be born here.

That’s why we have created a conference that mixes both important speakers from U.S. tech and also from all over Asia.

Given that smartphones are in ascendance globally, having Andy Rubin, who runs Google’s Android efforts, is a no-brainer. The longtime mobile exec is at the top of an aggressive push by the Internet giant to dominate the important sector across the world.

Speaking of domination, Alibaba Group’s Jack Ma efforts to make the company a powerhouse in China and elsewhere are hard to ignore. His recent tussle and interest in Yahoo, as he has built a wide-ranging Internet giant, should make for an interesting interview.

Expect a deep dive into what makes the future Web work with Twitter and Square founder Jack Dorsey, who is someone breaking new ground as he tears down old digital paradigms. With Twitter, Dorsey redefined the real-time world and how the virtual one communicates; with Square, he is upending the payments arena.

Nvidia is not only a pioneer of graphics chips, but now its processors are widely used in the latest mobile devices. That’s why its founder and CEO Jen-Hsun Huang has a lot to say about the future of the fastest-growing sector of computing, from smartphones to tablets and whatever’s next.

Asus Chairman Jonney Shih has presided over the Taiwanese tech giant since the early 1990s. Most recently, the company pioneered the netbook market and is now plunging deeply into the tablet business, making Shih perfect to discuss these key issues in Asia and around the world.

Kazuo “Kaz” Hirai is widely considered the second in command at the consumer electronics giant Sony, in charge of its key computer entertainment division, as well as now serving as executive deputy president of the whole company. As Sony struggles to reassert its dominance in tech, Hirai will be a key player in that effort.

Bradley Horowitz — as head of product management for Google+, the search giant’s aggressive effort to break Facebook’s hammerlock on social networking — has a perfect perspective to talk about the fast-growing area and where it is going globally. With locally-based social companies springing up all over Asia, can Google establish one the whole world will use?

At Microsoft, Andy Lees is leading one of the software giant’s most important initiatives, as president of its Windows Phone division. His come-from-behind-Google-and-Apple job includes mobile software and hardware, as well as its key partnership with Nokia, and Lees will need to win in markets globally, especially in Asia.

Peter Chernin is one of Hollywood’s top players and execs. But he’s also been increasingly active in media investing in Asia of late, and has a lot to say about the global nature of entertainment in the digital age.

John Roese heads the North American R&D team for Huawei, the Chinese telecom giant making everything from heavy-duty gear for networks to mobile phones and tablets. Roese will also talk about the phenomenon of a Chinese-owned company emerging on the world technology stage.

We also felt that it was important to hear from Silicon Valley start-ups, which have enjoyed unprecedented growth and funding in the Web 2.0 era. But as they seek to expand beyond the U.S., a critical move for them all, we’ve assembled a panel of entrepreneurs to discuss it, including: Brian Chesky, CEO and co-founder of Airbnb, the popular online vacation rental site; former Google exec Sukhinder Singh Cassidy, who is running the recently funded Joyus, a new premium video commerce site trying to pioneer a new way to shop online; and David Goldberg, who is now running one of tech’s most successful start-ups at SurveyMonkey, the dominant online survey company.

Yahoo co-founder and former CEO Jerry Yang, who will appear with the Internet giant’s Asia head Rose Tsou, needs little introduction. For all of the noise around the company these days, Yahoo has a huge footprint in the region, maintains a big e-commerce business there and holds massive stakes in key firms, such as Yahoo Japan and China’s Alibaba.

And so does LivingSocial, whose CEO and co-founder Tim O’Shaughnessy, who will appear along with founders of two of its Asian units, Daniel Shin and Paul Srivorakul, which the daily deals site just bought as part of its aggressive move into Asia.

Because of Samsung’s increasing importance as a global player in smartphones and tablets, it was natural to invite Dr. Won-Pyo Hong, who heads global product strategy for the Korean giant’s mobile business. That has surged in the past year to make Samsung a leader in Android-based phones and tablets, and a significant challenger to Apple.

Also key in the mobile arena is Cher Wang, chairman of HTC, the important and innovative handset and tablet maker which has been a key player in Android’s success story. Add to that HTC buying an operating system, which would further strengthen its hand in the competitive market, and it’s clear it is in a pole position on the critical mobile market going forward.

Finally, we are also glad to bring back Al Gore, who had a memorable interview at the fourth D: All Things Digital conference in 2006. The former VP and Nobel Peace Prize winner is now chairman of Current TV and also continues as a prominent environmental activist. He is also on the board of Apple, while also being a senior adviser to Google, as well as a partner in the famed Silicon Valley venture capital firm, Kleiner Perkins.

In total, along with some very cool demos to show off, it’s going to be an exciting AsiaD, and we are thrilled most of all to welcome our first international audience. So get ready for a busy three days here and we hope you will like what we have to show you.

The move puts the Ice Cream Sandwich launch event just ahead of the AsiaD conference, where executives from both companies are slated to speak.

Samsung and Google have rescheduled the Ice Cream Sandwich launch event that was to have taken place this past Tuesday. The companies postponed the event in the wake of Steve Jobs’s death.

The event, which is expected to see the debut of the next version of Android as well as the first device running the operating system, will now take place on Oct. 19 in Hong Kong. The new timing and locale is perfect for those coming to our AsiaD conference, which kicks off later on Oct. 19 in Hong Kong. Both Android chief Andy Rubin and a top Samsung executive are slated to speak at AsiaD.

Initially, Samsung didn’t explicitly say that its event was for Ice Cream Sandwich, though it did signal it would be an Android-focused event and sources indicated it would be for the launch of the next version of Android. The invite to the rescheduled event, however, features Google’s Droid guy in the shape of an ice cream sandwich.

The new version of Android is designed to bring together the phone and tablet versions of the operating system, which were forked in order for Google to hurry out the tablet-oriented Honeycomb. Google has yet to go into great detail on other Ice Cream Sandwich features.

Apple hasn't postponed the launch of the iPhone 4S with the death of Steve Jobs, but Google and Samsung have put off the launch of their jointly developed product.

Well, Apple isn’t stopping its launch of the iPhone 4S, but Samsung and Google have decided to postpone an event announcing their next jointly-developed device because of the death of Steve Jobs.

The pair had been scheduled to announce the first phone based on Ice Cream Sandwich at an event Tuesday, coinciding with a wireless industry trade show in San Diego. However, on Friday the companies announced that the event was being postponed to an unspecified new date.

Sources said the companies just felt it was the wrong time to hold a launch event, as the world continues mourning Jobs, who died on Wednesday.

“Samsung and Google have decided to postpone the Samsung Mobile Unpacked event during the CTIA in San Diego, previously scheduled for Oct. 11,” Samsung said in a statement. “Under the current circumstances, both parties have agreed that this is not the appropriate time for the announcement of a new product.”

Although the event was being hosted by Samsung, Google’s Andy Rubin had been scheduled to speak.

The decision to postpone was made late last night at the top levels of both companies, sources said, with Jobs’s death being the reason. There are no delays with the product itself, sources insisted.

Jobs’s death has provoked a global outpouring of support, including tributes from many of those with whom Apple has clashed, of late. Adobe, for instance, had a tribute to Jobs on its home page, while Microsoft lowered its corporate flag to half-mast at all offices across the world.

UPDATE 9:04 am PT: In an updated statement, the companies confirmed they were making the move out of respect for Jobs.

“We believe this is not the right time to announce a new product as the world expresses tribute to Steve Jobs’s passing,” the companies said.

Those looking for their first bite of Ice Cream Sandwich -- the next version of Android -- may have to wait a bit.

Well, this is curious.

Samsung had scheduled an event for Tuesday at the CTIA show in San Diego, where it was widely expected to introduce the lead device running Ice Cream Sandwich, the next version of Android. Among those on tap to appear was Android boss Andy Rubin, AllThingsD had reported.

Now, though, that event appears to be off, according to a report from Stuff.

That report quotes a statement from Samsung’s Korean HQ, though a U.S. Samsung representative said he couldn’t immediately comment on things. A Google representative was not immediately available for comment.

The cancellation has been extremely sudden, as both companies were talking about logistics for the event as recently as yesterday.

UPDATE, 8 am PT: I’ve independently confirmed that the event is off. Still working on the “why” part though.

AsiaD is now ready for launch, with a little taste of Apple and the Veep.

And then there was Schiller and Gore.

That would be Apple’s SVP of worldwide product marketing Phil Schiller and former Vice President Al Gore, who round out the stellar list of speakers at our upcoming AsiaD conference.

Taking place from Oct. 19 to 21 in Hong Kong, the lineup is already impressive, with a mix of speakers from China, Japan, Korea and Taiwan, as well as Silicon Valley and elsewhere.

The previously announced speakers include: Alibaba Group’s Jack Ma; Google Android head Andy Rubin; Twitter inventor and product guru, as well as Square co-founder and CEO, Jack Dorsey; Nvidia founder and CEO Jen-Hsun Huang; Asus Chairman Jonney Shih; Sony president and second-in-command Kazuo “Kaz” Hirai; Google+ guru Bradley Horowitz; Hollywood big shot Peter Chernin; Huawei’s North American R&D head John Roese; Microsoft’s Windows Phone head Andy Lees; and a panel of Silicon Valley start-up stars — Joyus’ Sukhinder Singh Cassidy, SurveyMonkey’s Dave Goldberg and Airbnb’s Brian Chesky; Yahoo co-founder Jerry Yang and Asia head Rose Tsou; LivingSocial’s Tim O’Shaughnessy, along with founders of two of its Asian units, Daniel Shin and Paul Srivorakul; Samsung mobile head Dr. Won-Pyo Hong; HTC CEO Peter Chou, who replaces Chairwoman Cher Wang.

Schiller, who reports to Apple’s CEO Tim Cook (and before that, Steve Jobs) is a member of the executive team of the tech icon, where he has worked for 17 years. He is responsible for a swath of Apple’s outward-facing businesses, including product marketing, developer relations and business marketing.

Today, in fact, he was onstage at Apple’s iPhone event, outlining some of its new product offerings. In addition, Apple just opened its first retail store in Hong Kong.

Gore, who had a memorable interview at the fourth D: All Things Digital conference in 2006, needs little introduction. The former VP and Nobel Peace Prize winner is now chairman of Current TV and also continues as a prominent environmental activist.

Gore is on the board of Apple, while also being a senior adviser to Google, which is a neat trick. At the same time, he is a partner in the famed Silicon Valley venture capital firm, Kleiner Perkins, and co-founder and chairman of Generation Investment Management, a partnership that is focused on sustainable investing.

And, as most people know, he knows a thing or two about the Internet.

Walt Mossberg and I could not think of two better people to add to the lineup we have for AsiaD, which has very few seats left.

See you in China in two weeks!

You want more AsiaD speakers, we got more. And there are more to come, too!

With AsiaD just a little over a month away, Walt Mossberg and I are adding even more speakers to the list, for what we hope will be an awesome event in Hong Kong.

Taking place from Oct. 19 to 21, the conference lineup is already impressive, with a mix of speakers from China, Japan, Korea and Taiwan, as well as Silicon Valley and more.

The previously announced speakers include: Alibaba’s Jack Ma; Google Android head Andy Rubin; Twitter inventor and product guru, as well as Square co-founder and CEO, Jack Dorsey; Nvidia founder and CEO Jen-Hsun Huang; Asus Chairman Jonney Shih; Sony president and second-in-command Kazuo “Kaz” Hirai; Google+ guru Bradley Horowitz; Hollywood big shot Peter Chernin; Huawei’s North American R&D head John Roese; Microsoft’s Windows Phone head Andy Lees; and a panel of start-up stars — Joyus’ Sukhinder Singh Cassidy, SurveyMonkey’s Dave Goldberg and Airbnb’s Brian Chesky.

Now, to add to the kitty:

Yahoo co-founder and former CEO Jerry Yang, who will appear with the Internet giant’s Asia head Rose Tsou. For all of the noise around the company these days, Yahoo has a huge footprint in the region, maintains a big e-commerce business there and holds massive stakes in key firms, such as Yahoo Japan and China’s Alibaba. One of Yahoo’s first big investments came from Asian investor Masa Son, in fact, way back when.

Also on deck is LivingSocial’s CEO and co-founder Tim O’Shaughnessy, who will appear with Daniel Shin, the CEO and co-founder of South Korea’s Ticket Monster, which the daily deals site just bought as part of its aggressive move into Asia. Competing there with its U.S. rival Groupon, as well as a myriad of local social buying services, the market is a tough one.

Because of Samsung’s increasing importance as a global player in smartphones and tablets, we thought it was important to have Dr. Won-Pyo Hong. He heads global product strategy for Samsung’s mobile business, which has surged in the past year to make the Korean tech giant a leader in Android-based phones and tablets, and a significant challenger to Apple.

Also key in the mobile arena is Cher Wang, the chairwoman of three Taiwan companies, including HTC, the important and innovative handset and tablet maker which has been a key player in Android’s success story. But just this week she talked about the possibility of HTC buying an operating system, which would further strengthen its hand in the competitive market.

That’s it for now, but we will have more big names to come, as well as some pretty cool demos we will be putting onstage at AsiaD. So stay tuned.

At the core of Google Inc.’s $12.5 billion Motorola deal is Silicon Valley engineer Andy Rubin, who in six years has reordered the wireless market and positioned the Internet giant as a central player in it.

Mr. Rubin, 48 years old, has changed Google’s organizational structure and become one of the most powerful people at the company. Under his leadership, the operating system known as Android has become the most widely used software on smartphones — surpassing the creations of Apple Inc. and Nokia Corp. — and powering tablets from many companies.
