<p>Even as Yahoo&#8217;s board was kibitzing all weekend about how to handle the continuing resume-padding controversy around its recently hired CEO Scott Thompson &#8212; including hiring its own outside crisis communications firm to represent it &#8212; he was working the phones to keep top staff apprised of the evolving situation.</p>
<p>While Thompson told those he spoke to that he was limited in what he could say and blamed a &#8220;personal vendetta&#8221; by an activist shareholder for his troubles, being proactive in this regard is probably a good idea. </p>
<p>That&#8217;s because multiple sources said he said <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120502/all-of-yahoos-top-execs-gather-today-to-talk-strategery-about-what-stays-and-what-goes/">exactly nothing</a> in various strategy meetings with top employees last week about allegations leveled by Dan Loeb of Third Point, which proved correct, that <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120503/dan-loeb-alleges-discrepancies-on-yahoo-ceo-scott-thompsons-resume-related-to-computer-science-degree/">Thompson had not gotten a computer science degree in college</a>, as his longtime bio had claimed.</p>
<p>&#8220;It was the gorilla in the room and it was awkward in the extreme,&#8221; said one exec present at the meetings. &#8220;He never brought it up, which was even worse.&#8221;</p>
<p>At this point, it seems unlikely that Thompson can regain the confidence of many at Yahoo &#8212; even though a company spokeswoman said he received a lot of incoming support too, both externally and internally &#8212; until he can render some cogent explanation about how the borked bio got into both Yahoo&#8217;s public site and also its more critical regulatory filings. </p>
<p>Even more mysteriously, how the error was never present in filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission made by eBay, where Thompson led its PayPal payments unit, although his public eBay bio has also been wrong for close to a decade.</p>
<p>And, most of all, how was it that Thompson never caught the mistake himself &#8212; <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120503/in-2009-interview-yahoo-ceo-does-not-deny-he-has-a-cs-degree-and-calls-himself-an-engineer/">even when directly asked about it</a> &#8212; despite the likelihood of reviewing it multiple times over those many years and ultimately certifying it for Yahoo&#8217;s own SEC filings. </p>

<p>Calling Encyclopedia Brown to solve the Case of the Computer Science Degree That Wasn&#8217;t!</p>
<p>Thompson has given no explanation about the debacle to the bulk of the Yahoo staff at all levels, save for an <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120504/yahoos-thompson-speaks-asks-employees-to-stay-focused-except-not-on-him-memo/">information-free and terse note to employees</a> on Friday afternoon that essentially asked them to focus on their work instead of his bizarre crisis.</p>
<p>Unfortunately for him, many Yahoos are focusing a lot on Thompson, with message boards at the Silicon Valley Internet chastising their CEO and giving him support that is tepid at best. From interviews I have had with two dozen employees this weekend, to say morale is at an all-time low is perhaps understating the situation. </p>
<p>Here is a short selection of comments that were read to me, for example:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p><em>&#8220;Resume padding is one thing, but lying about something that is so easy to check is puzzling.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;There is no reason to let it slide by &#8230; This isn&#8217;t some guy who&#8217;s trying to impress a date &#8230; It&#8217;s sad that we just accept this kind of stuff from corporate heads and politicians.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;Having some document to prove you can do a job is not all that important, lying about it is.&#8221;</em></p></blockquote>
<p>What appears to trouble employees the most in the threads I was read was the nonchalance of the initial Yahoo statement about the issue, which called the addition of a fake degree on Thompson&#8217;s bio an <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120503/yahoos-response-on-computer-science-resumegate-inadvertent-error/">&#8220;inadvertent error.&#8221;</a></p>
<p>&#8220;From a pure employee perspective, it feels like it is a violation of their principles,&#8221; said one person, reflecting a dozen or more conversations I had this weekend up and down the organization. &#8220;And anyone else would probably be immediately fired for this, even with an explanation.&#8221;</p>
<p>Said another: &#8220;He clearly knew and lied for years; and his handling since exposed has been unacceptable.&#8221;</p>

<p>As I noted above, a company spokeswoman said there was also much support for Thompson (pictured here) within the company, but declined to provide any quotes or details.</p>
<p>Presumably, some answers will be coming from a board investigation aimed at getting to the bottom of the situation, including trying to grok who put the error in the bio in the first place.</p>
<p>My bet: They&#8217;ll try to pin it on a lower-level minion, although that will not fly with a lot of people.</p>
<p>Including me, because whoever typed in the faux degree, its presence there has been too long for Thompson not to be responsible for it.</p>
<p>Flunky error or not, there are important questions about whether Thompson himself provided a bio that contained the inaccuracy to the board when he put himself forth for the job via direct emails to Yahoo director and Intuit CEO Brad Smith.</p>
<p>That line of thought basically boils down to: Can Thompson not <em>read</em>?</p>
<p>More problematic is the fact that the placement did not come via Yahoo&#8217;s headhunter on the CEO search, Heidrick &#038; Struggles, which apparently was not charged with doing a background check on Thompson.</p>
<p>Instead, the director in charge of the search, Patti Hart, sources said, hired another forensic firm, which appears to have missed Thompson&#8217;s erroneous academic record.</p>
<p>The only thing completely clear amidst all the confusion: Hart screwed up by botching an extremely simple part of a vetting she was charged with. That makes her vulnerable, of course, along with other Yahoo board members or staffers closely involved in the talent search.</p>
<p><a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120506/as-yahoo-ceo-reaches-out-to-top-staff-board-meets-to-weigh-options-i-e-figuring-out-who-gets-to-take-the-borked-bio-blame/hart/" rel="attachment wp-att-204275"><img src="http://allthingsd.com/files/2012/05/Hart-212x285.jpg" alt="" title="Hart" width="212" height="285" class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-204275" /></a></p>
<p>While Hart (pictured here) is in a much dicier position, Thompson still appears to have initial board backing &#8212; at least for <em>today</em> &#8212; as it&#8217;d be a very tough call to fire yet another CEO so quickly in the middle of several key deals for Yahoo, as well as a proxy fight. </p>
<p>Said one person close to the situation, the board is still considering its &#8220;options,&#8221; in an effort that is being led by independent board member Fred Amoroso.</p>
<p>So, it will be instructive to see how the board will proceed tomorrow &#8212; especially since it is likely that <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120506/yahoo-should-expect-incoming-lawsuit-lobbed-by-loeb-tomorrow-on-ceo-hiring/">Loeb will lob a lawsuit</a> to try to get more information on the Thompson hiring process.</p>
<p>But it&#8217;s started by hiring its own outside communications firm, Sard Verbinnen, which has handled other crises for Yahoo in the past. </p>
<p>Sard&#8217;s Charles Sipkins &#8212; <em>welcome back, Charlie!</em> &#8212; had no comment about the board&#8217;s next move, except to <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120503/yahoos-board-will-review-resume-discrepancy-of-ceo/">reiterate its statement from last week</a> that it is looking into the Thompson bio mess and will make appropriate disclosures at some point. </p>
<p>We can&#8217;t hardly wait.</p>

<p>One of the least-changed parts of <strong>AllThingsD</strong> since we started this site has been our &#8220;Voices&#8221; section, which has attracted robust and ever-increasing traffic over the years.</p>
<p>But today Voices gets a new look as we relaunch an updated section to bring you even more writing and information from outside sources. Voices will be run by senior editor <a href="http://allthingsd.com/about/">Beth Callaghan</a>, and will offer six regular features:</p>
<p><strong>Must-Reads</strong> &#8212; formerly called Voices &#8212; will be the same daily compendium of links from around the Web. These are pieces we&#8217;ve selected editorially because we think they&#8217;re worth your time. We&#8217;ve made two changes in order to clarify the nature of the content and our role in suggesting them: We&#8217;ve renamed the links &#8220;Must-Reads From Other Web Sites&#8221; and we&#8217;ve simplified them to consist merely of outbound links. The links will appear in widgets across the site and in an archive &#8212; but when you click on a headline, you&#8217;ll be taken directly to the original Web site.</p>
<p><strong>Voices</strong> is now made up of exclusive op-eds and posts from outside contributors who are well-versed in <strong>AllThingsD</strong> and have unique perspectives to share. We welcome and will evaluate all such pieces, and also plan to reach out to a range of industry experts on a variety of topics. Our goal is to spur debate and also give smart and engaging content a platform on our site.</p>
<p><strong>Forum</strong> is conceived as an assembly of quick opinions from four or five well-known personalities on a single issue that is in the news. Topics can range from thoughts on the possible bubble in Silicon Valley to what&#8217;s the most interesting new trend to how possible privacy regulation will impact the tech industry. We hope to elicit a lot of different opinions and insights from a wide-ranging panel of execs, academics, venture capitalists, Wall Street analysts, entrepreneurs, bloggers and more.</p>
<p><strong>Eye to Eye</strong> will be even more pointed, pitting a pair of often-opposing viewpoints on a controversial topic of the week &#8212; kind of like a Spy vs. Spy, but with words. The possibilities are endless here: Was $1 billion too much for Facebook to pay for photo-sharing site Instagram? Will Yahoo&#8217;s recent restructuring work? Do you think Google Glasses is a good idea? Where will Apple&#8217;s stock be in a year?</p>
<p><strong>Numbers</strong> is a weekly story told by data &#8212; sometimes scientific, sometimes irreverent, always interesting. We will be working with many top research outfits, and will also be doing a number of our own polls of readers. We love infographics, surveys and pie charts at <strong>ATD</strong> and you&#8217;re going to get a whole lot of them.</p>
<p>Lastly, <strong>Ten Things About Me</strong> finds answers to entertaining and informative questions aimed at prominent people in the digital realm. It&#8217;s a little like the Proust Questionnaire mixed with the kind of queries that we are well known for at our <strong>D</strong> conferences, plus a whole lot of unusual ones, so you can get to know a variety of tech and media figures in a different way. First up: Twitter and Square inventor Jack Dorsey tells us what he&#8217;d be up to if he weren&#8217;t doing what he is doing now.</p>

<p>It&#8217;s one thing to not be targeted in any regulatory action that strafed your competitors, but SecondMarket CEO Barry Silbert used the opportunity to tout just why his company missed the bullets.</p>
<p>In an unusual and interesting post on social answer service Quora, Silbert gave a long answer to the <a href="http://www.quora.com/SecondMarket/Why-wasnt-Secondmarket-part-of-the-SharesPost-secondary-market-SEC-action-today">question entrepreneur Jason Calacanis asked there</a>: &#8220;Why wasn&#8217;t SecondMarket part of the SharesPost/secondary market SEC action today?&#8221;</p>
<p>That would be the investigation by the Securities and Exchange Commission, which filed charges, <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120314/sec-cracks-down-on-firms-trading-facebook-pre-ipo-shares/">as Arik Hesseldahl wrote</a> earlier this week, &#8220;against two managers of private funds that had raised more than $70 million to acquire and trade pre-IPO shares of Facebook and other tech companies with misleading investors and charging undisclosed fees. It also brought charges against SharesPost, saying it had engaged in securities transactions without being registered as a broker-dealer.&#8221;</p>
<p>The move was part of a year-long inquiry aimed at secondary markets, where firms trade privately owned shares and options of pre-IPO companies.</p>
<p>Silbert, who runs one of the biggest companies in this sector, apparently decided to make hay while the Feds shone (up). In the Quora post, he noted: &#8220;I am proud to say that SecondMarket is not among those investigated or charged, which only reinforces SecondMarket&#8217;s ongoing commitment to being the trusted, compliant and fully-regulated marketplace in the startup and private company ecosystem.&#8221;</p>
<p>If he <em>does</em> say so himself!</p>
<p>All kidding aside, it is actually a novel way to turn a story that could tarnish everyone nearby into a plus. (Plus, ABC &#8212; Always Be Closing!)</p>
<p>Among the reasons that Silbert said SecondMarket was not part of the government probe: &#8220;Fully regulated, soup to nuts, from the start&#8221; (the company is a registered broker-dealer; &#8220;close coordination with private companies on all transactions&#8221; (&#8220;customized secondary markets,&#8221; he noted); &#8220;rigid accreditation process&#8221; of buyers; and &#8220;no disclosure of private company valuation and pricing.&#8221;</p>

<p>Chegg &#8212; best known for online rentals of textbooks to college students &#8212; said it has just bought Zinch, a start-up that links high school students and college recruiters.</p>
<p>Terms of the deal were not disclosed.</p>
<p>The purchase of the San Francisco-based Zinch, said CEO Dan Rosensweig in an interview earlier this week, is part of a larger plan involving a series of acquisitions aimed at &#8220;how we move from two-day relevance to relevance all year around for students.&#8221;</p>
<p>By that, he meant the short time period when students either buy or rent their textbooks for the semester.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s certainly been a good business for Chegg, which is the leader in the online textbook-rental arena, including digital distribution.</p>
<p>But to further solidify its relationship with students and expand its market base to include high schoolers along with college consumers, Chegg has picked up a number of start-ups like Zinch, using its stock and also the whopping $220 million in funding from a number of venture firms, including Kleiner Perkins.</p>
<p>In late September, for example, the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100926/exclusive-chegg-raises-75-million-in-additional-funding-from-asias-ace/">company bought CourseRank</a>, which helps students share course schedules, take classes with friends, and read and write reviews on classes and professors, as well as find out how they grade.</p>
<p>Also scooped up by Chegg: Notehall, which is a student-to-student note-taking trading market; <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20101208/exclusive-chegg-buys-cramster/">Cramster</a>, a social homework helper; and Student of Fortune, a homework-answers site for student questions (which a recent filing by Chegg noted was bought for $5.9 million in stock).</p>
<p>Also being tested are such offerings as deals for students and other ways to leverage the original textbook relationship.</p>
<p>&#8220;This is the beginning of a connected student network that we hope to build into a giant platform,&#8221; said Rosensweig. &#8220;We want to have a student using us all the way through for a 10-year span, from high school on.&#8221;</p>
<p>In related news, Chegg said it has hired former Palm CFO Andrew Brown as its new CFO. Prior to Palm, he served as the CFO of Pillar Data Systems Inc., a storage start-up funded by Oracle&#8217;s Larry Ellison. </p>
<p>While a CFO hiring often indicates a soon-to-happen IPO, Rosensweig said that Chegg has more than enough capital, needs to focus on building up its offerings and is in no rush to go public.</p>

<p>Would it surprise you to know that BoomTown doesn&#8217;t really care anymore if TechCrunch editor Michael Arrington sidelines as a blogger while he makes investments in tech companies his tech news site covers?</p>
<p>In a post yesterday, titled <a href="http://techcrunch.com/2011/04/27/an-update-to-my-investment-policy/">&#8220;An Update to My Investment Policy,&#8221;</a> Arrington made his seemingly cogent arguments that plenty of disclosure made it all &#8220;fine,&#8221; took one of his typical look-at-me swipes at anyone who dared to question this logic (apparently, we&#8217;re crappy &#8220;direct&#8221; competitors, so we haters have no standing to comment!) and presumably went on his merry investing way.</p>
<p>While I was first irked&#8211;because it was an appalling show to many of us cranky standards-insisting whiners&#8211;I soon realized Arrington had made a good argument about who he is and, frankly, who he has always been.</p>
<p>In other words, it&#8217;s a kind of there-he-goes-again thing, vaguely icky but hardly surprising and completely genuine.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, his new boss, AOL content head Arianna Huffington, pointed me to his post in an email.</p>
<p>When I asked her for an on-the-record comment, as usual, she politely and quickly complied, writing in support of Arrington:</p>
<p>&#8220;TechCrunch is committed to transparency. Michael has written about the guidelines he follows&#8211;that he rarely writes about companies in which he is an investor, and that, when he does, he clearly discloses this information. The same rules apply when TechCrunch’s writers cover these companies.&#8221;</p>
<p><em>Hold the phone.</em></p>
<p>Because while I kind of understand where Arrington is coming from, what I don&#8217;t understand is how this kind of convenient and on-the-fly rule-making can govern a much larger company whose strongly and repeatedly stated goal by Huffington herself is to create quality journalism.</p>
<p>Since I believed Huffington&#8211;whom I like very much as an Internet figure and as a friend&#8211;I was confused at what the rules for the whole of AOL content were now.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s why I sent her a long new list of questions to answer, which are:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>1) What are, if any, the ethical guidelines about making investments for the editorial staff at HuffPo media group properties?</p>
<p>2) Since Arrington now seems to have permission to do so from you, can other editors at AOL properties do the same&#8211;that is, make very adjacent investments to what their site covers, as long as they disclose it? For example, can an editor who runs the entertainment site make investments in entertainment companies she/he has coverage responsibility over? (By the way, did you give him permission to make these investments? Did he ask?)</p>
<p>3) Is there anyone who polices what is fair coverage of competitors&#8211;i.e. companies competing with companies your editors invest in?</p>
<p>4) If an editor makes investments in a company and someone who works for them writes about that company, does that editor have to recuse himself from the story? Is that even possible?</p>
<p>5) Since you just fired someone for what you called an ethical breach&#8211;asking freelancers to work for free and also seemingly defending an attempt to curry favor with an advertiser/client&#8211;why is this not an ethical breach?</p></blockquote>
<p>I had a lot more questions, still unanswered by Huffington, but you can see where this is going.</p>
<p>Simply put, does AOL, which is touting itself as a 21st-century media company, need to have 21st-century rules of the road? Or perhaps not so much?</p>
<p><strong>UPDATE:</strong> Now, it is a real clown circus at AOL, with the company declaring that editorial personnel cannot make investments, <em>except Arrington</em>!</p>
<p>&#8220;As a rule, in order to avoid conflicts of interests, AOL Huffington Post Media Group editors, writers, and reporters may not have a financial interest in a company or industry that they regularly cover,&#8221; AOL said in a statement to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/aol-says-reporters-are-not-allowed-to-invest-in-companies-they-cover-except-michael-arrington-2011-4#ixzz1KqjAqGPL">Business Insider today</a>, even though I nicely asked for a comment on the issue yesterday. &#8220;Arrington operates from a unique position.&#8221;</p>
<p><em>And how!</em> Where do I get such a faboo ethical hall pass from Content Principal Huffington?</p>
<p>I suppose I should go all slouching-towards-Bethlehem here,  and wring my hands over this unusual ruling, but what&#8217;s the use?</p>
<p>As you might have read: &#8220;The best lack all conviction, while the worst are full of passionate intensity.&#8221;</p>
<p>How did this all start, especially since I feel like this ridiculous tempest in a Silicon Valley teapot over Arrington&#8217;s investment-making might actually be my fault a little bit?</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s why:</p>
<p>On Tuesday night around 10 pm (just when I start getting revved up), I wrote a testy email to Arrington&#8217;s bosses at AOL&#8211;Huffington and CEO Tim Armstrong&#8211;as well as the Internet portal&#8217;s sharp PR head, asking for a response about what seemed to me to be a glaring conflict of interest at TechCrunch related to new investment activity by Arrington and the site&#8217;s coverage of those particular companies he had invested in.</p>
<p>It was all disclosed, of course, but it still felt, as I said, <em>icky</em>.</p>
<p>And, given the recent and loudly stated goal of promoting quality journalism by Huffington&#8211;including the recent dismissal of AOL&#8217;s Moviefone site editor over what the company considered ethical lapses&#8211;it seemed pertinent to ask.</p>
<p>Mostly because I don&#8217;t think they actually knew much&#8211;if at all&#8211;about Arrington&#8217;s increasing investing action. Armstrong said as much in an email to me, and Huffington assured me they were going to check it out tout de suite.</p>
<p>But rather than the answer I was waiting on, up popped Arrington&#8217;s missive yesterday, which I assume came after his bosses asked for some info on this.</p>
<p>In it, he explained his controversial decision to go back into investing again, in what is clearly a more significant manner.</p>
<p>It was a practice he had abandoned years earlier, apparently after being pecked by detractors for it.</p>
<p><em>But, dear readers, no more! Let Arrington be Arrington!</em></p>
<p>And that seems to be a talented blogger with a flare for the dramatic, with a clearly sharply-honed news nose and sassy writing skills, but a scribe who much prefers to be a <em>playah</em> than just an observer and chronicler of that play.</p>
<p>And, after more reflection, I thought: Well, maybe it is a better idea for Arrington to go play with all the boys in Silicon Valley, which would probably be more fun than taking flack for lack of traditional journalistic ethics he never ascribed to in the first place.</p>

<p>I once jokingly <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20081218/techcrunchs-yertle-the-turtle-tantrum-over-news-embargoes">nicknamed Arrington Yertle the Turtle</a> after the Dr. Seuss book on one dubious king of one small pond in Sala-Ma-Sond, after he went particularly nuts on the topic of news-embargo breaking.</p>
<p>That diatribe on how he saw news rules&#8211;which is to say, there aren&#8217;t any that bind him&#8211;was vintage Arrington, too. And, after reading his latest post, I suddenly realized that it&#8217;s pointless to give a turtle a hard time for not being a fish.</p>
<p>But Huffington is another story. She has put herself in word and deed right into the center of the debate on where news is going on the Web, especially after <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110206/youve-got-arianna-aol-buys-huffington-post-for-315-million-in-cash">AOL paid $315 million for her Huffington Post</a> news and opinion site.</p>
<p>Huffington has certainly taken a lot of hits over the years as the HuffPo has grown, some deserved, but she has clearly led an impressive effort.</p>
<p>In fact, I think the cute-kitten and celebrity-loving angle played up by her detractors to dismiss her is silliness, because she and the Huffington Post are clearly more than that and are obviously having a major impact on the future direction of content in the digital age.</p>
<p>But that power she has sought also gives her a responsibility to say exactly what that means on a real and granular and consistent level, beyond the platitudes of wanting to make great journalism that she declares all the time now.</p>
<p>In other words, very specifically: What does Arianna Huffington stand for in regards to journalism? What are her rules and standards and codes? And, perhaps more importantly, what does she <em>not</em> stand up for?</p>
<p>These are questions I hope Huffington&#8211;who is really good at smacking back at criticism, too (See: the <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20110310/arianna-huffington-to-bill-keller-who-you-calling-oxpecker">New York Times&#8217; Bill Keller</a>)&#8211;will address in one of her patented blog-xplosions and many times over, too.</p>

<p>In short, besides signing the <a href="http://www.dowjones.com/codeconduct.asp">Dow Jones Code of Conduct</a>&#8211;standard at The Wall Street Journal and other DJ publications&#8211;all our editorial staff is required to also pen their own in-plain-English personal and detailed account of disclosures that are pertinent to their job.</p>

<p>My <strong>ATD</strong> disclosure is probably the most detailed of all of them, since I gay-married Megan Smith a dozen years ago. She later became a VP at Google, which I cover from time to time, especially related to other companies I focus on more, such as Yahoo.</p>
<p>Most of the time, if you care to read my posts on Google, I am probably tougher and snarkier than not, mostly because I know the search giant from its earliest days.</p>
<p>And, even though I once wrote extensively for the Journal about Google since its founding and before Megan arrived there, I thought it wise to lay it all out in detailed detail.</p>
<p>(By the way, if you want to try to tweak me by asking what News Corp.-owned Fox News&#8217; ethics rules are, I don&#8217;t know, as <strong>ATD</strong> belongs to Dow Jones, which has had them forever. I will say, though, that Roger Ailes often freaks me out.)</p>
<p>In any case, as Arrington preaches, the more disclosure the better, and perhaps I should say even more so here, given the current swirl, by noting explicitly that I garner exactly <em>no</em> financial benefits from my relationship with Megan.</p>
<p>That might seem odd, because she certainly earns more. But I don&#8217;t know how much nor do I ask, since we have separate bank accounts and she always pays up&#8211;well, <em>almost</em> always&#8211;when half the bills are due. While it sounds painfully un-romantic, we only spend overall what each of us can afford equally in an exact 50-50 split.</p>

<p>In addition, I also legally signed away all rights to inheritance&#8211;although I had no such marriage rights in the first place, being gay&#8211;of Megan&#8217;s assets, which are in a trust for her relatives and our sons (for when they are too old to have any fun).</p>
<p>More to the point, I believe this makes me the only person to marry an exec at a hot Silicon Valley company with no prospect of any gold-digging.</p>
<p>Thus, I clearly would make the worst investor <em>ever</em>&#8211;not that I ever invest in tech or plan to while I am a reporter covering the sector.</p>
<p>Thank god, I suppose, that Michael Arrington is there to take up the slack.</p>

<p>With a declining market share in the arena and a search technology outsourcing deal with Microsoft, it&#8217;s not a bad question to ask.</p>
<p>But Yahoo begs to differ, introducing a new feature called Yahoo Search Direct at a press event in San Francisco today.</p>
<p>I liveblogged it, natch.</p>
<p><strong>10:14 am:</strong> I was late, as per usual, but walked in just as the session was getting started.</p>
<p>Yahoo&#8217;s Chief Product Officer Blake Irving&#8211;looking fetching in a purple cashmere sweater&#8211;was talking about search.</p>
<p>He immediately turned it over to Shashi Seth, Yahoo&#8217;s head search dude, who immediately said: &#8220;Answers not links.&#8221;</p>
<p><em>Huh?</em></p>
<p>Actually, the product is pretty nifty, showing a lightning-speed box that shows more robust search results, although not unlike offerings from both Microsoft&#8217;s Bing and, of course, Google Instant.</p>
<p>While both have different takes, it is essentially a direction in which search brings in maps, photos, and&#8211;of course&#8211;advertising.</p>

<p><strong>10:23 am: </strong> Wait, it was <em>over</em> before it started! Whoa. No more bells and whistles?</p>
<p>And I still was enjoying Irving&#8217;s sweater and I wanted to touch it, but that would have been wrong.*</p>
<p>Seth then took questions from the reporters.</p>
<p>&#8220;We believe the next generation of search&#8230;people are looking for answers,&#8221; he said.</p>
<p>Very true, but perhaps not so much from Yahoo anymore.</p>
<p>Still, Yahoo Search Direct is a laudable try and it&#8217;s also nice to see some innovation from the long-troubled company.</p>
<p>&#8220;We are the premier digital media company,&#8221; said Seth, parroting a new description of Yahoo that the Silicon Valley company is now using since its recent sales meeting in San Antonio.</p>
<p>I asked a question about whether there is a dedicated app for the tablet of Yahoo Direct Search, which sources had also told me was shown to the troops in Texas.</p>
<p>Yep! It will be ready later this year.</p>
<p>I also asked about how much all this search innovation was costing compared to return on the investment.</p>
<p>No answers from either Irving or Seth.</p>
<p>Someone then asked if there would be a lift in market share from the feature.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s the plan, Stan!</p>
<p><strong>10:41 am:</strong> More questions about the comparisons to Google Instant. Of course, it&#8217;s the same type of thing, in the contest to win the King of Relevancy crown among consumers.</p>
<p>Google Instant. Yahoo Search Direct. Quora. My dentist, who seems to know <em>everything</em>. In case you didn&#8217;t know, dentists are very erudite.</p>
<p>Seth noted that even though Yahoo has only 15 categories covered in Yahoo Search Direct, there will be hundreds to come, as well as more features on top of this feature.</p>

<p>Speaking of purple, the demo dude kept putting Elizabeth Taylor into the query box, which depressed me. Violet eyes now closed forever.</p>
<p>That was the real story today.</p>
<p>As if to round out the event, someone asked whether critics are right about whether Yahoo should still be in search.</p>
<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re in this for good,&#8221; said Irving firmly.</p>
<p>&#8220;Look, we are not focused on the past,&#8221; added Seth, who was not here in this very room at a similar Yahoo search event years ago, when similar promises were made about search going away from a page of blue links. &#8220;I don&#8217;t even know if you&#8217;d call it search in three years.&#8221;</p>
<p>What would you call it then?</p>
<p>&#8220;Find,&#8221; joked Irving. And later, &#8220;It&#8217;s actually &#8216;found.&#8217;&#8221;</p>
<p>Apparently, Yahoo was lost and now is found via Yahoo Search Direct.</p>
<p>*By the way, I touched the sweater, which was&#8211;<em>in fact, Blake</em>&#8211;periwinkle, which is a twee version of purple.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img src="http://newenterprise.allthingsd.com/files/2011/01/logo_ibm-275x144.jpg" alt="" title="logo_ibm" width="275" height="144" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-1903" />Day one of the three-day battle between the human brain and silicon on the game show &#8220;Jeopardy&#8221; ended in a tie.</p>
<p>The IBM supercomputer and human player, Brad Rutter, each had $5,000 on the scoreboard, while Ken Jennings, who had <a href="http://newenterprise.allthingsd.com/20110214/that-human-vs-machine-practice-round-of-jeopardy-didnt-end-the-way-you-heard-it-did/">bested Watson </a>in the much-publicized practice match, ended with $2,000.</p>
<p>Watson missed some questions and in interesting ways. At one point Watson repeated a wrong answer, the &#8220;1920s,&#8221; which Jennings had just said. Host Alex Trebeck referred to these as &#8220;weird little moments.&#8221;</p>
<p>Watson sprang to a huge lead early. By the first commercial break, Watson had $5,200 to Rutter&#8217;s $1,000, and $200 for Jennings. It began a serious run interestingly enough after hitting the Daily Double and making a bet. This is interesting in that Watson, in the practice match which it ultimately lost, showed a weakness in situations where betting was called for. This was a weakness that Jennings exploited to his benefit. This made it a surprise when Watson threw down and bet $1,000, more than it had on the board at the time.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Ask.com is in the process of reformulating itself, <a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/20101109/ask-adds-to-consensus-social-is-the-way-to-compete-with-google/">having dropped its algorithmic search offering</a> and laid off 150 employees in November. The company is billing the changes, which came after a community Q&amp;A launch in July, as a return to its &#8220;Ask Jeeves&#8221; question-answering roots.</p>
<p><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-1681" title="Ask iPhone" src="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/files/2010/12/Ask-iPhone-201x300.png" alt="" width="201" height="300" />I recently had a chance to sit down with Ask.com President Doug Leeds, who was particularly high on the company&#8217;s efforts in mobile: A new iPhone app that includes the Q&amp;A feature has been downloaded 250,000 times since being released in November.</p>
<p>(It might be premature to say mobile is the future of Ask, considering it has yet to launch apps on other mobile platforms.)</p>
<p>Refocusing Ask around Q&amp;A on both the Web and mobile has already had an impact, even if it&#8217;s not fully rolled out. Leeds said 60 percent of Ask queries are in the form of a question now, up from 28 percent last year.</p>
<p>Questions are more monetizable than queries, he attested, because users stay on an Ask.com page rather than clicking to zoom off elsewhere on the Web. Ask has found that users who have their questions answered are 50 percent more likely to click on an ad.</p>
<p>Social search offers Ask.com a way to differentiate itself from the competition. Leeds said the company&#8217;s brand has long been a second-choice search engine: A huge percentage of Ask users go to Ask after Google fails to answer their query. That may not sound like something to brag about, but it&#8217;s made the company profitable, with consistent traffic as the sixth-largest U.S. site, at 90 million monthly visitors.</p>
<p>Ask <a href="http://www.thestreet.com/story/10939398/iac-cfo-we-might-sell-askcom-in-pieces.html">doesn&#8217;t seem to get a lot of love</a> within the halls of its owner, IAC, so it&#8217;s especially important for the company to grow its revenue, if not its traffic. Ask is hiring back 30 of the 150 positions it cut, for a total of 270 employees, said Leeds, who described the layoffs as a removal of satellite offices in order to consolidate operations at its Oakland, Calif., headquarters.</p>
<p>Leeds said that Ask has found social search works especially well on mobile, where, for instance, users can ask a question verbally using the free Ask.com iPhone app with speech recognition, put the phone back in their pocket and wait for a notification saying that a real person has answered the question.</p>
<p><img class="alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-1687" title="DougLeeds" src="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/files/2010/12/DougLeeds-150x150.jpg" alt="" width="150" height="150" />The median answer time for questions posed to the Ask community is approaching five minutes. That&#8217;s eons in search time, but the fact that the answer is created within those five minutes matters, said Leeds.</p>
<p>According to <a href="http://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/right-here-right-now-when-it-comes-to-questions-mobile-trumps-the-desktop-111913089.html">a Harris Interactive survey of mobile users sponsored by Ask</a>, 66 percent of respondents said timeliness matters more when they&#8217;re not in front of their computer, and 40 percent of smartphone users said they&#8217;re more influenced by users&#8217; opinions given within the last 24 hours than those from a month ago.</p>
<p>To be clear, Ask has not completely converted to social. Only 20 percent of visits are currently exposed to community Q&amp;A, and only after users say they want to ask a question or a search has failed to produce results. That&#8217;s because Ask doesn&#8217;t want to overtax its human question answerers, said Leeds. The majority of Ask user questions are answered through a machine process of extracting information from multiple Web pages (similar to the word definitions, flight status information and real-time weather you&#8217;ll get at the top of the search results page if you look for such things on Google or Bing).</p>
<p>To recruit and retain question answerers, Ask has a promotion going where it donates 10 cents per answer to Susan G. Komen for the Cure. &#8220;Altruism is the best incentive,&#8221; said Leeds. &#8220;We don&#8217;t want it to be a game; we want it to be useful.&#8221; Today, 65 percent of questions asked through community Q&amp;A get accurately routed to an answerer.</p>
<p>Next for Ask is a &#8220;nearby&#8221; feature of its iPhone app that will launch early next year. The ideal question, said Leeds, would be &#8220;Why is there a crowd over there?&#8221; Or users could ask about the current state of traffic on roads, crowding in a particular restaurant or whether they should be worried about that smoke they&#8217;re smelling in the air. Of course, for this to work well, Ask will need much deeper penetration than 250,000 iPhone users.</p>
<p>As it tries to get social, another limitation for Ask is it doesn&#8217;t have much of an existing membership system. Unlike, say, Yahoo, where users are virtually always logged in, Ask has never had a portfolio of products, just search. The company introduced a revamped log-in system in July, but it will have to get many more users to sign in before it can make use of personalization, social connections and network effects to get questions answered. (Hmm&#8230;isn&#8217;t this what Facebook Connect does?)</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Q&#038;A is a buzzy tech topic these days&#8211;see <a href=""http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/20101221/twitter-triples-team-in-one-year-buys-qa-startup/">Twitter&#8217;s Fluther deal yesterday</a> (though Twitter didn&#8217;t acquire the Fluther Q&#038;A product, only its personnel)&#8211;but here&#8217;s a start-up trying to stay out of the spotlight, despite some high-profile backers. <a href="http://getsponge.com/">Sponge</a>, which calls itself &#8220;the future of Q&amp;A,&#8221; powers pages for businesses to share and build community knowledge.</p>
<p><a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/files/2010/12/Sponge.jpg"><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-1572" title="Sponge" src="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/files/2010/12/Sponge.jpg" alt="" width="200" height="149" /></a>In practice, Sponge appears to be a sort of community-sourced FAQ, where both representatives of a company and users can answer questions posed by users. You can see an example <a href="http://ask.trueventures.com/">here</a>, for the venture capital firm True Ventures.</p>
<p>Sponge seems somewhat similar to customer service plug-in Get Satisfaction, but with a focus on creating content that will engage an audience on the company&#8217;s own site. There&#8217;s also a company called <a href="http://www.opzi.com/">Opzi</a> that&#8217;s working on &#8220;Quora for the enterprise,&#8221; though it seems more oriented toward internal communications.</p>
<p>True Ventures, incidentally, appears to have led a $500,000 seed funding round for Sponge this past spring, which also included Matt Mullenweg&#8217;s <a href="http://audrey.co/">Audrey Capital</a>.</p>
<p>Sponge is led by CEO Krutal Desai, who had previously been with <a href="http://acsseo.com">ACS</a>, the SEO and social media advisory company that had helped many top blogs grow their traffic significantly a couple of years back. Web developer <a href="http://www.linkedin.com/in/henrykhachatryan">Henry Khachatryan</a> is also a co-founder.</p>
<p>According to a <a href="http://www.petindustryadvisory.com/site/index.php?option=com_content&amp;view=article&amp;id=83&amp;Itemid=108">published bio</a> for Desai, Sponge was founded in 2009 after he graduated from UC Berkeley, and its customers include Intuit, Eventbrite, Vespa, TechStars and the Red Cross. The company maintains an active <a href="http://blog.getsponge.com/">blog about building online communities</a>.</p>

<p>Q&#038;A has been a field of Web development since at least the early days of Ask Jeeves. After the success of sites like Yahoo Answers, it has surged back again, with Quora, Facebook, many start-ups and even Ask.com launching social Q&#038;A products in the last year.</p>

<p>The <strong>All Things Digital</strong> readership has spoken: Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg was wrong in declaring that the Apple iPad was not mobile.</p>
<p>In fact, 1,671 takers of a <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20101106/take-the-boomtown-vs-zuckerberg-survey-is-the-apple-ipad-mobile-or-not/">survey BoomTown ginned up</a> on the subject using SurveyMonkey disagreed with him 85.1 percent to 14.9 percent.</p>
<p>The larger number picked the answer&#8211; &#8220;No, Mark needs to get out more!&#8221;&#8211;when asked: &#8220;Was Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg correct in asserting last week that the Apple iPad is not mobile?&#8221;</p>
<p>The smaller number agreed with the statement, &#8220;Yes, Mark is a visionary!&#8221;</p>
<p>Well, he actually is, but not about this debate.</p>
<p>A week ago, BoomTown wrote a post titled <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20101105/dear-zuck-the-apple-ipad-is-mobile-so-sorry">&#8220;Dear Zuck: The Apple iPad <em>Is</em> Mobile (So Sorry!),&#8221;</a> countering Zuckerberg&#8217;s sudden statement at a <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20101103/liveblogging-the-facebook-mobile-event-single-sign-on/">recent press event</a> that the popular tablet device was not.</p>
<p>As I wrote about what the kingpin of the social networking giant said:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>Ben Parr of Mashable asked a question everyone has been speculating about recently&#8211;whether and when there would be an iPad app for Facebook coming.</p>
<p>A fumbling &#8220;no comment&#8221; would have worked fine, but the real Zuckerberg seemed to have decided to channel the clever Aaron Sorkin-ish repartee of the fictional Zuckerberg in the movie &#8220;The Social Network.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s not mobile…it is a computer,&#8221; he said flatly.</p>
<p>&#8220;I think Apple would disagree with you,&#8221; noted Parr.</p>
<p>&#8220;Well, sorry,&#8221; Zuckerberg spat out, his voice dripping with the kind of sarcasm that only a super-nerdy Silicon Valley engineer can pull off properly.</p></blockquote>
<p>I disagreed, noting:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>The iPad is a computer, because that is technically true, even though that makes a smartphone a computer too. (And, now that I think of it, my car is a computer.)</p>
<p>But actual civilians don’t make these kinds of distinctions and, if one spends any time watching consumers use tablets, mobile is entirely how they think of it.</p></blockquote>
<p>The post got a lot of comments, and tweets on Twitter too, so I thought I would post a survey so that everyone could cast their own vote.</p>

<p>BoomTown had to park a badillion miles away from Facebook&#8217;s suburban HQ in Palo Alto, Calif. and hoofed it there for a press event that unveiled the sFund.</p>
<p>What&#8217;s that? A <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20101021/kleiner-perkins-announces-250-million-sfund-for-social-start-ups/">$250 million fund for social start-ups</a>.</p>
<p><strong>10:40 am PT:</strong> The excitement was building&#8211;well, not really&#8230;well, not at <em>all</em>, in fact&#8211;at the Facebook cafeteria, as the Silicon Valley press got to see the name of the sFund on screens throughout the room.</p>
<p>Kleiner Perkins power VC John Doerr started off the proceedings with some microphone snafus, when he tried to get out from behind the podium.</p>
<p>&#8220;John, sometimes you have to stay in the box,&#8221; joked Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, who was sitting onstage in what appears to be an Internet Hall of Fame group.</p>
<p>The others would be Facebook CEO and co-founder Mark Zuckerberg, Zynga CEO and Founder Mark Pincus, and giant-man-about-Web Bing Gordon.</p>

<p>Doerr talked on about the importance of social, related to the Internet.</p>
<p>Then, he introed Zuckerberg, hoodie-less, who agreed with him, talking about photos and how social made them hot on Facebook.</p>
<p>Apparently, <em>everything</em> is going social. Personally, I am now contemplating becoming a hermit.</p>
<p>Doerr went full Oprah on him, asking what would inspire him to innovate, if he were starting out today (and presumably there were no Winklevii around to &#8220;borrow&#8221; an idea from).</p>
<p>&#8220;If you take any passion and map it to an industry,&#8221; said Zuckerberg, it will result in disruption.</p>
<p>Then Doerr channeled Barbara Walters at Pincus, tossing him a softball query about the fabulousness of it all.</p>
<p>For example: &#8220;What&#8217;s inspired you to be a CEO at this amazing company?&#8221; (Note to Walt Mossberg: Let&#8217;s file that tough one away for <strong>D9</strong>!)</p>
<p><strong>11:01 am:</strong>Thank goodness then for Bezos, who simply said he hoped these new companies will take some of that $250 million and use Amazon Web Services.</p>
<p>He talked about how these trends grow virally and &#8220;sometimes violently.&#8221;</p>
<p><em>Ouch!</em></p>

<p>Speaking of pinchy, Bezos moved on to some chemical explosion metaphor, and I am now certain I want to be a hermit crab.</p>
<p>Then, after a question about what he would do now, he veered to bioengineering! Doerr wanted a social answer, but Bezos was talking test tubes and &#8220;engineered and synthetic life.&#8221;</p>
<p>But Gordon behaved for John &#8220;Diane Sawyer&#8221; Doerr and talked about how social is the only place to be for the cool kids.</p>
<p>He reeled off the other partners, including Comcast, Liberty Media and Allen &#038; Co.</p>
<p>One more question from Doerr: Five years from now, what is going to make you &#8220;delighted&#8221; about and for the customers you service.</p>
<p>Gordon: He could see the family.</p>
<p>Pincus: He has 12-week twins, not the Winklevii, who are still too young to use Facebook. He was excited it is all getting wired.</p>
<p>&#8220;When everyone is always connected to one another, rather than connected to the Web,&#8221; he said, that&#8217;s the bomb.</p>

<p>He called the big social companies &#8220;dial tones,&#8221; as in Zynga was the gaming dial tone, Amazon was the shopping dial tone and Facebook was <em>the</em> dial tone.</p>
<p>Zuckerberg: I was not sure he was actually answering the question. But I believed his wish was about these social networks getting to scale.</p>
<p>He went on though, talking about how some companies were building a &#8220;light&#8221; social layer versus companies where social was &#8220;built fundamentally into the product.&#8221;</p>
<p>These, of course, have an advantage, according to the gospel of Zuckerberg.</p>
<p>Bezos: He talked about Amazon&#8217;s Web services some more&#8211;this dude is a retailer, so he was <em>sure</em> good at selling.</p>
<p>Gordon, who is apparently like Ed McMahon to Doerr&#8217;s Johnny Carson, rounded up the feel-good session.</p>
<p><strong>11:17 am:</strong> Q&#038;A.</p>
<p>Go Miguel Helft, from the New York Times, who asked a good question, about what took so long for Doerr to do this fund, since social&#8211;i.e., Facebook&#8211;has been around for seven years or more.</p>
<p>Doerr joked, &#8220;Next question.&#8221; Ha.</p>
<p>But <em>really</em>. Doerr did not answer except to say that Zynga only exploded a year ago, so back off, Miguel.</p>
<p>There were two other dullish questions, about new partners.</p>

<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s a quarter-billion-dollar party,&#8221; said Gordon, which I was not quite wanting to attend. Which made me a social party pooper.</p>
<p>Larry Magid from CBS asked about social responsibility around privacy, especially after the recent controversy around the leaking of Facebook user info to advertisers, via third-party apps companies such as Zynga.</p>
<p>Then, there ws a question about whether this is not simply the &#8220;fbFund,&#8221; as in Facebook, since the social networking site was going to benefit the most from all this.</p>
<p>No, it was not, declares Doerr.</p>
<p>More questions&#8211;about monetization, advertising, free versus paid and an off-topic one about rumors of Amazon launching an app store (of course it is!).</p>
<p>Zuckerberg took the monetization one. All of the above, it&#8217;s great, money for all.</p>
<p>The event finished with a very odd poem by Gordon, which ended with a decent joke about the possibility that entrepreneurs, if they are lucky, get a movie &#8220;made about you.&#8221;</p>
<p>He was referring to &#8220;The Social Network,&#8221; which trashed Zuckerberg.</p>
<p>In any case, quarter-billion-dollar party on, Mark.</p>

<p>Adam D&#8217;Angelo (pictured here) is too shy to subject himself to a BoomTown video&#8211;or perhaps too savvy&#8211;but he did agree to a sit-down for a short interview recently in a nondescript room in the Palo Alto, Calif., office building that houses Quora, the hot social answers start-up.</p>
<p>D&#8217;Angelo was, of course, the CTO and VP of Engineering at Facebook, as well as a prep school friend of the massive social networking site&#8217;s co-founder and CEO, Mark Zuckerberg.</p>
<p>But D&#8217;Angelo <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080511/facebooks-cto-dangelo-to-leave">left the company in mid-2008</a> and with former Facebooker Charlie Cheever launched the question-and-answer site in January, after much venture capitalist shoving to get on board.</p>
<p>With more than $10 million in funding from Benchmark Capital and a whole lot more hype to contend with, D&#8217;Angelo and his small team have been trying to move the site well beyond its Silicon Valley-tech-dudes forum to one in which a plethora of topics and memes thrive.</p>
<p>As was the initial goal, D&#8217;Angelo said the aim remains to become the best place to find pertinent information about just about anything.</p>
<p>&#8220;The Web is a great place for finding information, but a lot of information that is really important is actually in people&#8217;s heads,&#8221; said D&#8217;Angelo. &#8220;If I had to pick one, I would say Wikipedia is a good comparison [to Quora], but there is room for more.&#8221;</p>
<p>Not such an easy task, which is why D&#8217;Angelo believes most Q&#038;A sites still come up short for users.</p>
<p>&#8220;Quora is a simple interface, but it is very complicated underneath,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Q&#038;A sites in the past had good systems, but they did not add in identity, reputation and quality.&#8221;</p>
<p>The hope is that by adding those elements, as it develops, Quora can more correctly answer the questions people are looking for.</p>
<p>&#8220;We are really interested in info that changes quickly and in unstructured info,&#8221; said D&#8217;Angelo, which he noted was at the heart of a lot of searches and well beyond data that search engines such as Google (GOOG) provides.</p>

<p>And for answerers, D&#8217;Angelo believes, it also gives them a place to feature their expertise in a much easier way than if they used their own Web site.</p>
<p>&#8220;We think people have found that Quora is different from a blog, in that people now have to think up what they think people might want to know,&#8221; said D&#8217;Angelo. &#8220;Here, they are given the topics and the questions, which means they are hitting areas they already know their audience is interested in.&#8221;</p>
<p>Interestingly, D&#8217;Angelo said he has wanted to turn down the spotlight on the site in recent months, as he hopes to get Quora on as solid footing as possible.</p>
<p>&#8220;We want to make a product that markets itself and not because we are big in Silicon Valley,&#8221; he said. &#8220;So, we want to tone down anything that does not have to do with improving Quora itself.&#8221;</p>
<p>Perhaps one of the reasons is the competing effort by his old pal and employer at Facebook, which launched its own Answers product soon after D&#8217;Angelo did.</p>
<p>D&#8217;Angelo declined to answer any questions related to the obvious and decidedly odd competition, although it is clear the move irks him, since it was a longtime interest Facebook was never interested in until he was and Quora attracted a giant amount of attention.</p>
<p>&#8220;There were a lot of different things I could have done [when I left Facebook]. But I felt this was an area that was completely neglected compared to other stuff,&#8221; is all D&#8217;Angelo will say.</p>
<p>Luckily for Quora, so far the Facebook Answers product has not garnered a whole lot of buzz, although D&#8217;Angelo discounted that as being a sign of Quora&#8217;s success.</p>
<p>&#8220;This thing is up to us, whether we succeed or fail is something that only we can determine,&#8221; he said.</p>

Silicon Valley&#8217;s latest Goliath versus Goliath battle is officially on.</p>
<p>Google today responded to <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100812/new-silicon-valley-battle-oracle-sues-google/">Oracle&#8217;s (ORCL) claims that its Android OS infringes copyrights and patents related to Java</a>, which Oracle acquired as part of its purchase of Sun Microsystems earlier this year. This morning, the search sovereign filed an answer to Oracle&#8217;s suit, denying all seven of its patent-infringement charges, and asking that the company&#8217;s copyright-infringement claim be dismissed because Google (GOOG) feels it is &#8220;legally deficient.&#8221;</p>
<p>And, interestingly, the answer calls Oracle out as a hypocrite&#8211;a company that pushed for a fully open Java platform when the OS was owned by Sun, only to blatantly ignore the open source community’s requests to fully open source it after its acquisition of Sun closed.</p>
<p>&#8220;It’s disappointing that after years of supporting open source, Oracle turned around to attack not just Android, but the entire open source Java community with vague software patent claims,&#8221; the company said in a statement. &#8220;Open platforms like Android are essential to innovation, and we will continue to support the open source community to make the mobile experience better for consumers and developers alike.”</p>
<p>Google&#8217;s prayer for relief makes that disappointment quite clear. In it, the company asks not only for a judgment dismissing Oracle’s complaint against it with prejudice, but also for a judgment in favor of Google on all of its counterclaims; a declaration that Google has not infringed, contributed to the infringement of, or induced others to infringe, either directly or indirectly, any valid and enforceable claims of the Patents-in-Suit; a declaration that the Patents-in-Suit are invalid; a declaration that Oracle’s claims are barred by the doctrines of laches, equitable estoppel, and/or waiver; a declaration that the Oracle’s claims are barred by the doctrine of unclean hands; a declaration that this case is exceptional and an award to Google of its reasonable costs and expenses of litigation, including attorneys’ fees and expert witness fees; and such other and further relief as this Court may deem just and proper.</p>
<p>Here are three of the more pointed graphs from the answer, followed by a copy of the document in its entirety.</p>
<blockquote class="memo" style="background:#faf5e5;font-style:normal;"><p>
<strong>7.</strong> Sun came under significant criticism from members of the open source community, including Oracle Corp., for its refusal to fully open source Java. For example, in August of 2006, the Apache Software Foundation (“ASF”), a not-for-profit corporation that provides organizational, legal, and financial support for open source software projects, attempted to obtain a TCK from Sun to verify Apache Harmony’s compatibility with Java. Although Sun eventually offered to open source the TCK for Java SE, Sun included field of use (“FOU”) restrictions that limited the circumstances under which Apache Harmony users could use the software that the ASF created, such as preventing the TCK from being executed on mobile devices. In April of 2007, the ASF wrote an open letter to Sun asking for either a TCK license without FOU restrictions, or an explanation as to why Sun was “protect[ing] portions of Sun’s commercial Java business at the expense of ASF’s open software” and violating “Sun’s public promise that any Sun-led specification [such as Java] would be fully implementable and distributable as open source/free software.” However, Sun continued to refuse the ASF’s requests.</p>
<p><strong>8.</strong>	Oracle Corp., as a member of the Executive Committee (“EC”) of the Java Community Process (“JCP”), the organization tasked with managing Java standards, voiced the same concerns regarding Sun’s refusal to fully open source the Java platform. Later that year, in December of 2007, during a JCP EC meeting, Oracle Corp. proposed that the JCP should provide “a new, simplified IPR [intellectual property rights] Policy that permits the broadest number of implementations.” At that same meeting, BEA Systems – which at the time was in negotiations that resulted in Oracle Corp. purchasing BEA – proposed a resolution that TCK licenses would be “offered without field of use restrictions . . . enabling the TCK to be used by organizations including Apache.” Oracle Corp. voted in favor of the resolution.</p>
<p><strong>9.</strong>	Just over a year later, in February of 2009, Oracle Corp. reiterated its position on the open-source community’s expectation of a fully open Java platform when it supported a motion that “TCK licenses must not be used to discriminate against or restrict compatible implementations of Java specifications by including field of use restrictions on the tested implementations or otherwise. Licenses containing such limitations do not meet the requirements of the JSPA, the agreement under which the JCP operates, and violate the expectations of the Java community that JCP specs can be openly implemented.”<br />
 </blockquote class="memo" style="background:#faf5e5;font-style:normal;">
<p><strong>UPDATE:</strong> Oracle has issued this statement on Google&#8217;s answer.</p>
<p>&#8220;In developing Android, Google chose to use Java code without obtaining a license. Additionally, it modified the technology so it is not compliant with Java&#8217;s central design principle to &#8216;write once and run anywhere.&#8217; Google&#8217;s infringement and fragmentation of Java code not only damages Oracle, it clearly harms consumers, developers and device manufacturers.&#8221;</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-20051" title="faceglobe" src="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/files/2010/05/faceglobe.jpg" alt="" width="150" height="150" />Facebook is beta-testing a product in the same space that so many giants have attacked and fallen short&#8211;a curated question-answer, which has stumped the biggest of bigs. Has it been about social scale all along?</p>
<p>I just clicked on an innocent-looking Facebook ad asking for beta testers. What followed was a page explaining how Facebook is launching a new product that involves getting users to ask and answer questions that will be published to Facebook as a whole.</p>
<p><em>Note: I&#8217;ve copied and pasted the beta user offer from Facebook at the bottom of this post. Decide for yourself if I&#8217;m reading this right.<br />
</em></p>
<p>For those with only a moderate level of tech obsession, the service I&#8217;m talking about is one in which users interact with one other, posing and answering questions that are available to all users. Sort of what user forums are for software.</p>
<p>Google has tried it, Yahoo has tried it, and Quora, a tech darling of the moment&#8211;which just happens to be run by former Facebook CTO Adam D&#8217;Angelo, with guidance from original Facebooker Matt Cohler&#8211;is trying it. I&#8217;m a beta tester for Quora, and have used several ask-answer type services online. A weakness has always been the scale of the user community.</p>
<p>We&#8217;ve all heard the &#8220;if Facebook were a country&#8221; statistics&#8211;or, if you haven&#8217;t, here&#8217;s a handy infographic, which is already two months old (click to enlarge).</p>

<p>I include the table above only to illustrate that if Facebook has anything, it has scale. Even considering the recent privacy hullabaloo, 80 percent of Facebook users who couldn&#8217;t care less still add up to a ferociously huge user population for an ask-answer service.</p>
<p>Okay, okay. Yes. Google (GOOG) has scale. Yahoo (YHOO)&#8211;well, it once had scale. But both sites boast core services based on moving freely in and out of their pages. Nothing keeps users in like a walled garden.</p>
<p>Additionally, there is something inherently social about asking questions that early ask-answer crowd seems to have missed.</p>
<p>Yes, I want an expert to answer my question about how a catalytic converter works (or Wikipedia), but if I want to know how to throw the best dinner party, I am just as likely to take notes on an answer from a friend of mine who throws great parties as I am from Paula Dean. Maybe more so.</p>
<p>Quora realizes this. It has built out a whole social networking component to its service, and encourages you to connect the other networks you are already a part of.</p>
<p>But what&#8217;s harder? Getting people to know one another or getting wannabe pundits to pontificate about something they are interested in&#8211;on the Internet? I know I&#8217;m an easy sell on the latter. Just ask me</p>

<p>Check out the interesting observations made by a range of media and tech folks in a post by Technologizer titled, <a href="http://technologizer.com/2010/03/08/future-windows/">&#8220;The Future of Windows: 28 Perspectives and Proposals&#8221;</a> on the 25th anniversary of the 1.0 version of the groundbreaking operating system.</p>
<p>The simple question being asked: How can Microsoft keep Windows relevant?</p>
<p>My wisecracking first answer: &#8220;Well, a more liberal policy on Windex, I suppose. Wait, you mean the software?&#8221;</p>
<p>Actually, I did try to recover, noting that I was not wedded to Apple (AAPL) systems, which I have mostly been using for years now, if Microsoft (MSFT) nailed touchscreen technology and worked better at innovative integration of social networking, software, Web and devices.</p>
<p>No surprise, blogger Robert Scoble had a laundry list of requests, such as these:</p>
<p>&#8220;I want everything I touch to be socialized. Why doesn’t Outlook know anything about Facebook? Why don’t my photos automatically get pushed to Flickr? Why don&#8217;t I have a news app on my desktop that brings in Tweets from Twitter? Why aren&#8217;t notifications built into the system at a deep level?&#8221;</p>
<p>ZDNet&#8217;s most excellent Microsoft watcher Mary-Jo Foley was more dramatic:</p>
<p>&#8220;But what Microsoft really needs to do to insure Windows&#8217; continued relevance is to be unafraid of introducing a whole new operating system at some point. At some point, in the not-too-distant future, Windows is going to need to be supplanted by &#8216;the next big thing.&#8217;”</p>
<p>USA Today&#8217;s Ed Baig would not go that far:</p>
<p>&#8220;Now, I&#8217;m by no means suggesting that Microsoft has to start from scratch when it comes to the traditional Windows OS for computers, much less prescribing specific changes&#8230;But what I am saying is that Microsoft shouldn’t be burdened by the shackles of legacy computing as it looks ahead.&#8221;</p>

<p>No matter what, of this I am still certain: More Windex!</p>
<p>Or as Toula Portokalos said in the movie comedy, &#8220;My Big Fat Greek Wedding&#8221;: &#8220;My dad believed in two things: That Greeks should educate non-Greeks about being Greek and every ailment from psoriasis to poison ivy can be cured with Windex.&#8221;</p>

<p>When <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100211/aardvark-confirms-it-has-been-acquired-but-not-by-what-company">Aardvark was sold</a> to Google (GOOG) for $50 million last week, a lot of folks wondered about the fate of <a href="http://www.hunch.com">Hunch</a>, another hot start-up in the space.</p>
<p>Except, as correctly noted by two of its four co-founders, Caterina Fake and Chris Dixon, in a chat BoomTown had yesterday, Hunch is quite different&#8211;more of an algorithmically hopped up recommendation service that makes use of a mass of data from user-generated questions and answers than a simpler social search site.</p>
<p>That doesn&#8217;t make Hunch into either a Yahoo Answers or a Wikipedia with more charm or allow for annoyingly querying your friends on Facebook or the masses on Twitter.</p>
<p>Personally, Hunch reminds me of a crowd-sourced decision-making mosh pit without the sharp elbows, making all kinds of cool, if odd, connections.</p>
<p>This mass of varied data is what Dixon and Fake think is key to making better decisions.</p>
<p><em>Got it?</em></p>
<p>The New York-based Hunch launched about last June to a lot of hype&#8211;somewhat due to Fake&#8217;s success with her last start-up, Flickr, the popular photo-sharing site Yahoo (YHOO) bought in 2005.</p>
<p>And so far, Hunch has been growing decently, with 1.2 million unique monthly visitors now and tens of millions of questions asked and answered.</p>
<p>(Its other founders are Tom Pinckney and Matt Gattis.)</p>
<p>With $6 million in funding, where Hunch goes from here will be interesting to watch, as it adds perhaps more profiling features, both fun and helpful.</p>
<p>The business goal said Fake: Basic lead generation, for which Hunch will presumably be paid by all kinds of vendors.</p>

<p>Yesterday, BoomTown <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20091007/microsoft-yahoo-deal-regulatory-update-eh/">wrote about the status of the regulatory approval</a> for the Microsoft-Yahoo search and online advertising pact.</p>
<p>While none of the key constituencies wanted to comment or make predictions about the outcome of the government scrutiny, most seem to agree that the MicroHoo partnership is more likely to be approved than not.</p>
<p>One of the few vocal critics of the deal, though, is Jeffrey Chester, the executive director of the <a href="http://www.democraticmedia.org/">Center for Digital Democracy</a>, a public interest group.</p>
<p>CDD, along with several other consumer groups, <a href="http://www.democraticmedia.org/letter/usdoj-letter-20090921">recently sent a letter</a> to the Justice Department&#8217;s antitrust head, Christine Varney, expressing concern about the control and collection of consumer data in the deal.</p>
<p>CDD also has been querying Microsoft (MSFT) and Yahoo (YHOO) directly about the data collection and privacy implications of the deal, which is something the government <em>should</em> be doing.</p>
<p>So, to further get a glimpse into MicroHoo&#8217;s arguments, here is a set of important questions Chester asked then that were answered in a memo by the pair:</p>

<p>Today, Yahoo! collects data about Yahoo! visitors to our search product and uses that information to deliver products and to customize advertising and content, among other purposes described in its Privacy Policy. Microsoft and Yahoo! have each adopted industry-leading privacy practices with respect to search. For instance, under Yahoo!’s global data retention policy, Yahoo! anonymizes user log data within 90 days with limited exceptions for fraud, security and legal obligations. For search specifically, Yahoo! will convey certain data to Microsoft to fulfill a user&#8217;s search request.  This includes the query and the IP address. Microsoft will anonymize this data sent to it by Yahoo! in accordance with Yahoo!’s announced data retention policies. Microsoft is only permitted to use search data that it obtains under the deal to operate and improve its search services and for no other purpose.</p>
<p><strong>Will Yahoo&#8217;s behavioral targeting technologies for search still be used?</strong></p>
<p>Yahoo! does not currently employ behavioral targeting in search. [Ed. note: Not completely true; see <a href="http://yhoo.client.shareholder.com/press/releasedetail.cfm?ReleaseID=367244">press release from Yahoo here</a> on new targeting capabilities.]</p>
<p><strong>Will any of Yahoo&#8217;s targeting apparatus be incorporated in any way with Microsoft Advertising, including with Bing?</strong></p>
<p>No. This deal is limited to search, and as noted above, Yahoo! does not employ behavioral targeting in search.</p>
<p><strong>Will search ads be sold by either Yahoo or Microsoft that provide for multimedia results, such as video?</strong></p>
<p>Video advertising is still a small and growing area and as such, it&#8217;s impossible to predict what video ads in any form, including what a potential video search ad, could look like several years from now.</p>
<p><strong>How may this deal affect the Yahoo! Newspaper Consortium?</strong></p>
<p>The partnership Yahoo! has with the newspapers is broad and includes everything from content distribution, advertising cross sales, and technology platform development, to the display of Y! sponsored search listings on the newspapers&#8217; own Web sites. Yahoo! Does not see the Microsoft deal as having an immediate impact on its newspaper consortium dealings. However, by combining its platform with Microsoft&#8217;s, Yahoo! and Microsoft will be in a position to offer the Newspaper Consortium and other web publishers more competitive bids for search syndication deals than either company can offer separately.</p>
<p><strong>What ad research and development will be shared or done in common?</strong></p>
<p>It is premature to speculate about the exact research that will be done, but the increased scale that will result from this search deal is expected to significantly enhance the ability to conduct meaningful research in a timely manner.</p>
<p><strong>What rationale was used to embrace the 3 month data retention time?  Why isn&#8217;t a shorter retention time adopted?</strong></p>
<p>Yahoo! did an extensive analysis and review of all our data systems globally in 2008. Yahoo! arrived at 90 days retention as the right timeframe for most of its log file data that allows it to deliver the industry-leading products and services its users expect from them, but that also minimizes the duration of time Yahoo! holds data in identifiable form. It&#8217;s important to note that some of Yahoo!’s log file systems retain identifiable data for less than 90 days but none will hold data longer except for a limited number of specific systems dedicated to fraud and abuse and to meet legal obligations.</p>
<p><strong>How do you envision Yahoo remaining viable when it no longer has a meaningful independent search service, given the need to have a coordinated search/display environment for digital marketing?</strong></p>
<p>Future growth in online marketing will come from shifting spend from offline advertising to the online world. Offline advertising spend is disproportionately held by the largest advertisers and they control the vast majority of ad spend. Yahoo! has the leading position in branded advertising and Yahoo! also serves the needs for the growing market of performance advertising. So this deal with Microsoft enables Yahoo! to deliver a fully integrated solution that meets marketers&#8217; needs at scale. Through this deal, Yahoo! retains a revenue stream in search without incurring the costs of developing a search platform or engine. Yahoo! will get paid an 88% TAC rate while eliminating significant expenses, enabling Yahoo! to invest more heavily in other areas of focus: amazing audience properties, web products, enhanced display advertising capabilities, and fantastic mobile experiences.</p></blockquote>

<p>The site has held similar online events twice in the transition period, but questions were then answered by White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs and not Obama.</p>
<p>This time, it will be the President, taking questions picked from those voted most popular.</p>
<p>The site is using Google (GOOG) Moderator technology, although there is no branding of it, as well as Google-owned YouTube for the video from Obama posted below.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Here are a few questions I&#8217;ve received recently from people like you, and my answers. I have edited and restated the questions a bit, for readability.</p>

<p class="question"> <em>Last week, when you wrote about the ChaCha cellphone search service, you didn&#8217;t say how they make money. Are they collecting phone numbers from customers so they can send spam text messages, or sell the numbers to others who will do so?</em></p>
<p class="answer"> ChaCha allows you to ask any Web-searchable question, by speaking it or texting it over a mobile phone, and then it sends you the answer via text message. The company charges consumers nothing, but says it is hoping to make money by striking deals with cellphone carriers to incorporate the ChaCha service into their current 411 phone-number look-up services. Also, it hopes to eventually include ads in the text message answers it provides.</p>
<p>In addition to the message that includes the answer, ChaCha sends you a message saying it is working on your request and restating your question, so you can see if it understood you correctly. It also sends an introductory text message to first-time users and occasional tips on how to use the service. Scott Jones, ChaCha&#8217;s chief executive, asserts that &#8220;we do not spam&#8221; and &#8220;we never make phone numbers and/or email addresses available to others.&#8221; He said the company is updating its privacy policy to make that clearer.</p>
<p class="question"> <em>We have DSL service. I use several Web-based applications, one of which is online backup, and my husband is concerned that they degrade his use of the Web, which includes creating Web sites. I contend that that is like saying turning on one light bulb is using too much electricity, that two people on one DSL line aren&#8217;t using up too much bandwidth. Who is right?</em></p>
<p class="answer"> Every situation differs, depending on exactly which programs you are each using, how you have them set, whether you are using them simultaneously, and how fast your DSL connection is. However, in general, your husband is correct that it is possible for heavy Internet usage on one computer in a home to slow down Internet speeds on another.</p>
<p>This is especially true with something like online backup, because it relies on your DSL account&#8217;s upload speed, which is typically far slower than the download speed. If your online backup program is trying to push a bunch of files over a slow upload connection, while he is in another room trying to upload new versions of a Web site over the same narrow upload pipe, it could affect the speeds he gets. You might try coordinating or staggering those online activities that involve heavy uploading. Normal Web surfing or emailing shouldn&#8217;t require any such coordination.</p>
<p class="question"> <em>I am thinking about purchasing a Dell (DELL) XPS One all-in-one desktop, but I have one question. Does the Dell&#8217;s built-in TV tuner require any extra attachments to watch TV right out of the box?</em></p>
<p class="answer"> You can watch over-the-air stations and analog basic cable stations right out of the box, without added equipment. However, you may want to connect a small desktop antenna to improve reception, which is what I did when I tested this machine. To use the XPS One with digital or premium cable or satellite stations, you would have to connect it to a cable or satellite receiver, just as most people do with their TV sets. This requires the use of an adapter that comes with the machine.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>If you&#8217;re sitting in front of a computer, it&#8217;s easy to look up information on the Web. It&#8217;s almost as easy if you have a sophisticated cellphone with a decent Web browser and you&#8217;re in a place with a good Internet connection where it&#8217;s possible to type.</p>
<p>But what if you only have a standard cellphone with a lousy Web browser &#8212; or even the best Web-browsing phone, but it lacks a fast data connection? What if you&#8217;re speeding down the road in a car, where typing is dangerous?</p>

<p>Now, there&#8217;s a way to get your questions answered despite those hurdles. It&#8217;s a free cellphone service that lets you ask any question answerable via a Web search, using any cellphone, by simply making a voice call. It&#8217;s called ChaCha, and I&#8217;ve been testing it out.</p>
<p>To use ChaCha, you just dial 800-2chacha (800-224-2242) and state your question. In a few minutes, you&#8217;ll get an answer via text message. In one test, I asked ChaCha who was the winning pitcher in the previous night&#8217;s Red Sox victory against the Yankees. In a few minutes, I received a text message with the correct answer: Daisuke Matsuzaka.</p>
<p>ChaCha requires no registration and works on any cellphone carrier. It needs no special codes or key words. You just state your question as if you were asking a friend. If you prefer to type your question, you can text it to &#8220;ChaCha,&#8221; or 242242. Though ChaCha itself charges no fees, your phone carrier may charge for the minutes you use, or for the text messages.</p>
<p>The service works by routing your questions to one of 10,000 hired &#8220;guides&#8221; &#8212; students, stay-at-home parents, retirees and others &#8212; who look up the questions on the Web and reply. They get paid 20 cents per answer.</p>
<p>Naturally, these guides vary as to their speed and accuracy. If you don&#8217;t like the answers they give you, or you want related information, you can call back or reply to the text message with a follow-up question. For instance, after learning which pitcher had won for Boston, I asked who lost the game for New York. I was quickly informed it was Phil Hughes.</p>
<p>Overall, I liked ChaCha. In most cases, I received fast, accurate, useful answers. But it has two weaknesses. One is that the low-paid, part-time guides can provide inconsistent service. When I asked for the best Mexican restaurant in D.C., for example, ChaCha came up with a choice that few locals would cite.</p>
<p>The other is that, unlike many other cellphone information services, ChaCha doesn&#8217;t automatically know your location. So, unless you include a location in your query, it&#8217;s clueless about questions such as &#8220;Where&#8217;s the nearest drugstore?&#8221;</p>
<p>ChaCha is hardly the only information service for cellphones. Google offers a text-message service where you can ask questions on a wide variety of topics, and a voice-based service that locates businesses near your location. Microsoft&#8217;s TellMe subsidiary just introduced a voice-based service that answers location-specific questions about businesses, weather, traffic and movies, and displays the answers on the screens of BlackBerrys.</p>
<p>But these competitors are more limited than ChaCha in key respects. Google&#8217;s broader mobile-search service, Google SMS, requires that questions be sent via text message using special key words. Its voice service, Goog411, finds only local businesses. TellMe&#8217;s new service is limited to location-based information and works only on certain phones.</p>
<p>I tested ChaCha using three very different phones: a cheap, bare-bones Samsung flip phone from Sprint; a midrange Motorola Razr from Verizon; and an Apple iPhone running on AT&amp;T. I asked questions via voice and text from various locations, including my car, where I used a hands-free microphone.</p>
<p>I asked about sports, TV shows, journalism, history, weather, nutrition, demographics and shopping. ChaCha handled most of these inquiries correctly and was able to fix most of its errors after I asked follow-up questions. For each question, it sends two text messages: one restating your query and saying it&#8217;s working on it, and the second containing the answer.</p>
<p>Each ChaCha answer is accompanied by a Web link. If your phone has a decent browser, you can go to that link to learn who the guide was, and what his or her Web-site source was.</p>
<p>ChaCha gave me the weekend weather forecast in Boston, the date of death of Abigail Adams and the cast of the TV show &#8220;Brothers &amp; Sisters.&#8221; It provided Peyton Manning&#8217;s salary and the sodium content of a McDonald&#8217;s quarter pounder. Its most impressive performance came when it correctly answered an obscure historical question: &#8220;When was the <em>Gaspee</em> burned?&#8221; The <em>Gaspee</em> was a British tax-collection ship burned in Rhode Island in 1772 in what is often considered the first act of war of the American Revolution.</p>
<p>The company is working on adding automated location knowledge, at least on certain carriers and phones. For now, you can tell it your location by sending a special command via text message. But even without the location features, ChaCha is a fun and useful service.</p>
