Calico, the company founded to extend lifespans that’s funded by Google and led by former Genentech CEO and current Apple Chairman Art Levinson, said today that it has made some hefty hires. Hal Baron, who led product at Hoffmann-La Roche, is coming on as president of research and development. Princeton genetics professor David Botstein will be chief scientific officer. Oncology researcher Bob Cohen and life extension researcher Cynthia Kenyon will also be part of the team.
News Byteletter to the heads of the U.S. Senate and House Judiciary Committees in support of proposed legislation that would allow them to publish statistics about secret national security surveillance orders. The Center for Democracy & Technology, which organized the group, said the letter was timed to coincide with the U.S. Justice Department’s filing of a brief with the FISA court today opposing many of those companies’ requests to disclose information about when it asks them for user data.
