Will mobile commerce as it has been envisioned for years ever take off?

LivingSocial is killing off its last-minute offers for restaurants and spas in favor of a new full-price service it calls Takeout & Delivery.

“This is the bigger opportunity we see under real-time commerce, based on the adoption we’ve seen with our members and the feedback from the restaurants,” said Greg Mazanec, LivingSocial’s general manager for Takeout & Delivery.

The move is a big step away from the company’s roots of offering large discounts to draw patrons into a store or restaurant. But the step also raises the broader question of whether mobile commerce — as we’ve envisioned it for years — will ever take off.

For the past decade, mobile executives and others have promised that, someday, consumers will be alerted of nearby deals or specials on their phone as they walk by a coffee shop or a restaurant. For example, a free latte with a purchase of a scone, or free fries with a burger and milkshake.

More recently, LivingSocial and Groupon were considered clear front-runners for bringing that promise to scale, because both have a large user base and a dense enough footprint of local businesses for it to work. But now LivingSocial is downplaying the idea of location-based offers, a year after launching.

Groupon, which launched a competing product called Groupon Now soon after LivingSocial Instant, continues to offer these real-time deals.

Mazanec declined to say how Instant performed financially, but said it was the company’s first attempt at “real-time commerce,” and it turned out that the response for takeout and delivery had been extremely high. ”It was the repeat behavior that was important to us,” he said.

Now the value is centralized around convenience instead of discounts. That’s something merchants generally like more, too. Instead of offering discounts to people who may have already been looking for a latte or a burger, now they are drawing in more people at full price.

Mazanec describes the nearby Mexican restaurant that already had a long line during lunch. He said the only way for them to sell more food without expanding physically is to offer takeout and delivery.

“Consumers aren’t pulling their phones out to search for the nearest real-time discount on a car inspection or framing service. They are, however, looking for a faster and better way to order food from their favorite local restaurants,” he said.

Now, Takeout & Delivery will replace Instant on the LivingSocial apps.

The mobile app allows users to place and pay for orders for either pickup or delivery. On the back end, the restaurant receives the order by fax, and is able to say how long the order will take to fill. Consumers who show up for takeout are directed to a specific line and can pick up their order without having to pay. Restaurants that offer delivery are responsible for supplying the drivers.

Discounts can always be layered on top of the transaction if a merchant wishes, but it’s no longer the starting point. LivingSocial shares the revenue from the transaction.

“This helps broaden our offerings and puts us in a place where we can offer fast casual to five-star gourmet,” he said.

By adding the service, LivingSocial also starts competing with other delivery services that have declared this to be a big market opportunity.

Seamless, a New York company focused on online delivery and takeout, recently acquired MenuPages and booked more than $400 million in orders last year. And GrubHub, a Chicago-based company, recently raised $50 million and acquired Dotmenu and Allmenus. GrubHub projected that orders would hit $225 million in 2011.

What TV-app start-up Movl plans to do with its fresh round of funding.

Movl, maker of TV apps that wirelessly sync content across multiple electronic devices, has nabbed $500,000 from billionaire entrepreneur/investor Mark Cuban, to help fund its growth as it rolls out three new features.

The tiny, Atlanta-based company launched in October 2010. Run by CEO Juan Pablo Gnecco and CTO Alan Queen, Movl (pronounced (MOE-vul) develops what it calls “multiscreen, multidevice” apps that are meant to enhance the connected-TV experience.

In early 2011, Movl’s Pictionary-like WeDraw app won $200,000 as part of Samsung’s Smart TV apps competition. Last month, Movl announced that it had developed an app called SwipeIt, which works on Android phones and Samsung TVs (and is technically owned by Samsung), allowing users to “swipe” content from their phones and have it appear on their TV screens.

Now the company is working on something called Direct Connect, which adds to the existing Connect service and is designed to work with both the Wi-Fi and 3G capabilities of mobile devices. One example the company gave was tapping into a smartphone’s built-in accelerometer and using the phone as a game controller.

Movl is also experimenting with a multiscreen, interactive ad platform and something it has code-named Kontrol TV, which will offer shortcuts for users to find multiple TV apps from the same app — and not just channel apps, but also trends, tweets, and other social media references related to TV shows. The company is aiming for a May launch of Kontrol TV.

Essentially, Movl is to Samsung TVs what AirPlay is to TVs using the Apple TV box. While enabling users to “throw” content from their mobile devices to their TV screens, Movl also wants to package all the various TV-related apps on that mobile device into one “shell.”

The apps currently work on Samsung TVs, Google TV-equipped sets, iOS and Android devices. Movl said that it is becoming increasingly focused on developing everything in HTML5, which Gnecco and Queen say they see more smart TVs moving toward.

Cuban explained his interest in the company by saying he thinks smart TVs, as a platform, are getting ready to take off, as new TVs get more powerful by the day.

He also said he feels the introduction of an Apple TV — as in an Apple-manufactured television set, not Apple TV in its current form — wouldn’t necessarily disrupt small fish like Movl, because they might have an already-established user base if or when an Apple TV comes out. Apple won’t ever have 100 percent of the TV market, and both Samsung and Vizio have a solid foothold, Cuban believes.

There’s also the question of whether Movl’s new applications could potentially raise the ire of cable operators, who have been introducing their own apps for mobile devices, and who might not like Movl’s idea to aggregate all TV-related apps into Movl’s Kontrol “shell,” as the company describes it.

But Movl says it’s not looking to usurp other apps — it mainly just wants to make it easier for a user to toggle between various TV apps during a multiscreen viewing experience. The company has been speaking with some cable providers that are interested in using Movl as a possible white-label solution, it says.

Outfit7 says its games on the iPhone and iPad have hit more than 300 million downloads since launching a year and a half ago.

Outfit7 says its games on the iPhone and iPad have hit more than 300 million downloads since launching a year and a half ago.

At that size, it claims to have outpaced Rovio’s Angry Birds, which took 20 months to hit 300 million.

If you haven’t heard of Outfit7, it’s probably because it hasn’t raised any institutional venture capital, it wasn’t founded in the U.S., and much of its application usage is spread across 120 countries.

But the company’s franchise of apps called Talking Friends, which are sort of like a modern-day Neopets, is gathering a large base of users.

The characters include Talking Tom Cat, Talking Ben the Dog and Talking Harry the Hedgehog — in other words, many more brands than Angry Birds alone. Of the 14 in existence, Talking Tom Cat is the most popular, having been downloaded 100 million times.

The animals serve as a virtual pet, which responds to your touch and repeats everything that you say. You can pet him, poke him or grab his tail. A popular activity is to record videos of the pet and send them to friends.

The number of users who come back to the app is impressive, with more than 90 million monthly active users worldwide. The company also averages more than 25 million downloads per month.

Executive Chairman Narry Singh believes Rovio and Outfit7 have similar growth trajectories; and like Rovio, which was able to create a strong brand from Angry Birds, Outfit7 is angling to create brands, as well.

Today, Outfit7 has offices in Palo Alto, Calif., as well as Slovenia, Cyprus, London and Seoul, South Korea. Its apps are primarily free, but users can make in-app purchases to buy virtual goods.

The company is also announcing today that it is partnering with Iconicfuture and Digital Artists to bring branded virtual goods to Talking Tom Cat. In a testament to its international pull, the merchandise will represent six of the world’s most popular soccer clubs, from Spain, Italy, England, France and Portugal.

Of course, Outfit7 is not the first company to want to replicate Rovio’s successes.

In the end, it won’t be important which company got to 300 million downloads the fastest, but which one was able to build a more long-term and sustainable company.

When you look at it in those terms, the jury is still out on Rovio, as well.

Don't worry, you'll still recognize it -- especially if you use Kayak's iPad app.

Travel comparison site Kayak.com has redesigned its Web site so it looks like its mobile app — not the other way around.

“We run the iPhone and iPad teams separately from the Web team, and the Web team had fallen behind,” said Paul English, co-founder and CTO.

The goal with the site’s design has always been to provide a simple layout, so that users can easily sift through thousands of flights, hotels and car rentals to find what they are looking for quickly.

But up until now, the focus wasn’t really on being beautiful, English said. The new look tries to incorporate a clean and attractive design.

After eight years in business, English said this is the most significant redesign of the site (check out the gallery below to see how the site has changed over the years). But only the most die-hard users are likely to notice many differences. Rather, the larger significance is that mobile is influencing the Web, and not the other way around.

Increasingly, this may be the case in the travel industry as so much of the traffic now comes from phones and tablets. Kayak said more than five million applications were downloaded in the nine months ended in September, a 97 percent increase over the same period a year earlier.

In early testing, English said conversion rates are higher and completion times are shorter as a result of incorporating mobile designs — which, by nature, are always built with speed and ease-of-use in mind. “They [customers] are more confident to compete the purchase because we haven’t worn them out.”

View the slideshow

Here’s some of the more notable changes:

The unibrow is gone: Internally, the company refers to “the unibrow” as the black bar that stretched across the the top of the page that said “Search One and Done.” Now at the top of the screen are several tabs, such as Flights, Hotels, Cars, etc.

Similar to iOS: The iPhone and iPad designers released a new iPad app about a month ago. In the new Web site design, they leaned on the design to bring a consistent typeface and coloring to the Web site.

Fewer ads on the site: When users are looking at photos of a hotel or viewing a map, they won’t see any ads. “Obviously, ads are an important part of the way we make money, but advertisers have gotten clever, and sometimes the ad is jarring and has animation,” English said. Kayak is issuing all-new guidelines that requires advertisements to blend with the site. “If you do a good job, it should be content. If we are showing you ads that are extremely related to what you are doing, it’s useful.”

Most of the changes will go live today, with some of the others — like the new ad guidelines — taking more time to implement.

English declined to provide an update on the company’s IPO. While it continues to file financial updates with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Kayak told AllThingsD in September that it was putting its plans on hold.

In addition to setting a record for the number of smartphones activated in a single day, the world has broken another barrier: The number of applications downloaded in one week.

In addition to setting a record for the number of smartphones activated in a single day, the world has shattered another barrier: The number of applications downloaded in one week.

In a new report, Flurry Analytics estimates that in the final seven days of 2011, 1.2 billion apps were downloaded worldwide across both Android and iOS, representing a 60 percent jump over a typical week.

More important, it is the first time the globe has punched through the billion-download mark, according to the technology company, which builds tools that thousands of developers use to track usage of their mobile applications.

Flurry had said last week that a record-breaking 6.8 million iOS and Android devices were activated on Christmas Day, along with an equally record-breaking 242 million application downloads. For the entire week, it now is estimating that 20 million iOS and Android devices were activated.

Additionally, Flurry discovered that Americans represented the biggest app addicts, downloading 509 million of the worldwide total.

The remainder of the top five countries are: China (99 million); the U.K. (81 million); Canada (41 million); Germany and France (40 million each).

In the new year, Flurry is forecasting that application downloads will frequently break the one-billion-a-week mark.

In 2011, it added, Apple’s App Store was on pace to exceed 10 billion downloads, which was twice the number it recorded over the three previous years combined. Likewise, the Android Market is also setting records. Over the past seven months, it achieved more than seven billion downloads, taking its life-to-date total past 10 billion.

PopCap has set the ambitious goal of getting half a billion people to play Bejeweled, its 11-year-old puzzle game.

PopCap has big goals for Bejeweled, an 11-year-old puzzle game that challenges players to line up three or more matching jewels in order to clear them from the board.

For players, the goal is to clear as many gems as possible, but going forward, PopCap’s goal is to get as many people as possible to play the game.

To do so, the company’s strategy is to make it free.

AllThingsD visited PopCap’s Seattle office this week, and caught up with Giordano Bruno Contestabile, franchise business director for Bejeweled, to see how the game is evolving after more than a decade.

Earlier this year, PopCap was acquired by Electronic Arts for up to $1 billion, thanks to Bejeweled and other hit games, including Plants vs. Zombies.

Up until now, players had to pay for Bejeweled in order to play it, but PopCap has recently launched free versions on Facebook and the iPhone.

In the free version, players can challenge others to score as many points as possible in one minute. They have the option to pay for “power boosts” to increase their odds.

A paid version on the iPhone allows players to knock out gems without a time limit.

With the switch to the free-to-play model, Contestabile said, PopCap has a way of reaching a half a billion users, up from 40 million paid users. That’s comparable to Rovio, which claims to have achieved 600 million downloads in two years — both free and paid.

In this video interview, Contestabile talks about the benefits of the approach, while also disclosing that Microsoft and Electronic Arts had the chance to buy the game a decade ago for cheap, but passed:

Nope, it's not owned by Apple, Google or even Amazon.

Nope, it’s not run by Apple, Google or even Amazon.

A new start-up, Openspace, is launching a physical store where consumers can visit and discover the latest mobile applications.

“If your iPhone has a problem, you take it to Apple. If your Android tablet has a problem, you take it to Verizon, AT&T or Best Buy,” said Openspace founder Robert Reich. “But if you have a question about which camera app would be great for taking pictures this weekend on the slopes, where can you turn?”

To help solve that problem, Openspace opened its first physical storefront last week in Boulder, Colo. Open six days a week, the store is staffed by “App Gurus” who make recommendations and try to eliminate “app-rehension.” (Their joke, not mine.)

Previously, Reich founded Boulder-based OneRiot, which uses social data to make mobile advertising more targeted. The company was acquired by Wal-Mart in September.

Openspace is just getting off the ground, so all the details haven’t been nailed down — like how the operation will make money. But in the next year it hopes to partner with developers to take a percentage of sales that result from applications promoted in the store.

Consumers can also do things the old-fashioned way and visit the company’s Web site to get recommendations. On the site, the company categorizes applications by interests — many of which won’t be found on iTunes — including such nontraditional subjects as Occupy Wall Street, zombies or “games a 10-year-old girl will enjoy.”

Developers often complain about how difficult it is for their applications to be discovered, and frequently pay for advertising or third-party promotion. So it’s possible that a physical app store could be one more way to get the word out.

Whether Openspace will be able to make enough money off referrals to offset the high costs of real estate and full-time staff will be the bigger question.

If retailers weren't terrified of Amazon before, the online giant's move to pay customers up to $5 to shop on their mobile phone while in a physical store should do the trick.

Amazon is offering consumers up to $5 off on purchases if they compare prices using the online giant’s mobile phone application in a store.

The promotion goes live Saturday and will serve as a way for Amazon to increase usage of its bar-code-scanning application, while also collecting intelligence on prices in the stores.

This holiday season, mobile commerce is surging as more people become comfortable using applications on their phone to compare prices or simply shop when not at home or at work.

On the Monday after Thanksgiving, the biggest online shopping day of the year so far, mobile sales reached 6.6 percent, jumping from 2.3 percent in 2010, according to IBM’s online retail study.

Amazon is not the only company hoping for a strong mobile Christmas.

Last quarter, eBay started airing TV commercials – its first in the past few years — to promote its mobile applications. The company estimated that mobile commerce merchandise volume this year will hit $5 billion. Additionally, eBay’s PayPal unit is expected to exceed $3.5 billion in mobile revenue.

Amazon has never released figures on how well its mobile applications do.

While the information empowers consumers, it terrifies retailers, who increasingly are feeling like showrooms — shoppers come to to check out the merchandise but ultimately decide to walk out and buy online instead.

Amazon’s Price Check app, which is available for iPhone and Android, allows shoppers to scan a bar code, take a picture of an item or conduct a text search to find the lowest prices. Amazon is also asking consumers to submit the prices of items with the app, so Amazon knows if it is still offering the best prices.

“We scour online and in-store advertisements from other retailers, every day, year-round,” said Sam Hall, director of Amazon Mobile. “Now, we are enabling customers to use the Price Check app to share in-store prices while they search for the best deals.”

While Amazon’s applications and its $5 incentive can be viewed as friendly to consumers, physical retailers will see it only one way — as an attack.

The one-day promotion Dec. 10 will offer 5 percent, or up to $5, off on as many as three items.

A handful of large retailers are opening their doors the night of Thanksgiving to get a jump on Black Friday. But the strategy is angering employees, and may go against online and mobile efforts.

A handful of large retailers are opening their doors on Thanksgiving to get a jump on “Black Friday” sales.

But the strategy might backfire. Not only are employees upset that they’ll have to staff the stores instead of being able to stay with their families, the move could cannibalize the retailers’ own online and mobile efforts.

Historically, shoppers have lined up in the early hours on the day after Thanksgiving — which has come to be known as Black Friday — to race into stores and be the first to scoop up discounts ahead of the holidays.

This year, stores are jumping the gun by opening a day earlier. Wal-Mart will open at 10 pm, two hours ahead of last year’s opening; Toys “R” Us will open at 9 pm, an hour earlier than last season; and Target will open for four hours when the clock strikes midnight.

On behalf of employees, Change.org has kicked off a petition, “Tell Target to Save Thanksgiving,” which argues that night openings rob hourly and salary workers of time off with their families.

But there may also be an economic reason to maintain standard practices.

Most of these retailers have major online presences and multiple mobile applications, including on the iPad. If they are open 24 hours a day online, must they actually open the doors, too?

After all, Amazon.com is never considered closed.

To get a sense of the strategy, we talked to someone who works on mobile and online strategy at one of the major retailers that is opening early. He told AllThingsD that he was worried about the impact opening early will have on mobile traffic, since traditionally their peak traffic hits between 3 am and 5 am, before stores open on Black Friday.

If customers have the option of visiting the stores in person earlier, it’s unclear whether that pattern will continue — and whether people will do some extra shopping while killing time standing in line waiting for the doors to open.

Even though mobile is still a small contributor compared to online traffic or store traffic, the retailer in question has scaled its infrastructure to accommodate this early-morning surge.

In general, the 2011 holiday season is expected to drive record sales online and from mobile devices.

Chase Paymentech, which analyzes information from the Top 50 e-commerce retailers, reports that online sales are up 25 percent compared to last year. A separate study by IBM predicts that traffic to retail sites from mobile devices is expected to more than double this month from the last holiday season, reaching 15 percent of all visits to retail sites. Last year, on “Cyber Monday,” mobile visits totaled only 3.9 percent.

But Andrew Lipsman, VP of industry analysis at comScore, said he did not believe the impact of opening early would be very significant.

“Thanksgiving Day and Black Friday are not huge online spending days,” he said. “So, even if sales are relatively soft, it should not have a significant impact on the full season for online retailers. At the end of the day, it will likely be a rounding error — if anything.”

ComScore’s data excludes sales made on tablets or mobile phones, but it estimates that those devices account for a minor amount of e-commerce spending — roughly 3 percent.

Here are the key online shopping dates in 2010:

Amazon has not returned calls or emails seeking comment, but we have confirmed independently that Charlotte, N.C.-based Yap has been acquired by Amazon.

Reports of the acquisition surfaced earlier today after CLT, a Charlotte-based blog, connected a couple of obscure dots. First, it tracked down an SEC filing that shows that as of Sept. 8, Yap was acquired by Yarmuth Dion. Then, it discovered that Yarmouth Dion has the same mailing address as Amazon’s Seattle headquarters.

Media reports immediately jumped to the conclusion that Amazon was interested in the company’s speech recognition technology so it could compete with Siri, the voice-controlled assistant found on Apple’s newest iPhone.

And, from what we dug up, that sounds about right.

Most recently, Yap’s servers were being used by Sprint and others to convert voicemails to text. It was being shipped on a majority of Sprint’s Android handsets. Yap also had an iPhone app.

On Oct. 20, Yap voicemail was discontinued.

But the company, founded by brothers Igor and Victor Jablokov, started out in a different direction. Four years ago, the company was eager to build technology that allowed people to interact with Web services using speech recognition. The company, which raised about $10 million, presented at the TechCrunch40 event in 2007.

At the time, the idea was a little far-fetched.

Wireless networks weren’t very fast, not many people owned smartphones and distribution was tough because of the lack of app stores. With many of those problems resolved, we heard the 50-employee company was beginning to return to its roots. Now, it works for Amazon.

We can hear it now:

– “Yap, what are this season’s most popular boots?”

– “Yap, buy me the first Harry Potter novel.”

– “Yap, what’s the new hit song from Justin Bieber?”

Wal-Mart is launching its first iPad app ever and is refreshing its iPhone app, providing a glimpse of what mobile commerce will be like for the mass market.

Wal-Mart is launching its first iPad app and is refreshing its iPhone app just in time for the holidays.

Both applications will enable consumers to shop online or see what’s available locally. Orders can be shipped or picked up.

The apps are being released ahead of the end-of-the-year shopping frenzy, which many retailers are hoping will be one of the busiest mobile commerce events ever.

“As customers use more smartphones and tablets, the Wal-Mart customer is doing the same thing,” said Gibu Thomas, the company’s SVP of mobile and digital.

That’s true, and it’s scary for big retailers. Increasingly, consumers are scanning barcodes to get reviews and compare prices before deciding whether to make a purchase or go somewhere else.

Thomas said the apps are not a defensive move against this trend, but rather a way to give consumers what they want. ”We want to know how we can help our customers shop better with us, which will make them shop more with us,” he argued.

Wal-Mart’s first iPad app launched about a week ago.

It lets people browse inventory in their local store, while also seeing what else is available online. Instead of duplicating the online experience, they’ve created categories. For instance, in the home section, shoppers will browse a catalog-like experience, where they’ll see pots and pans, stereo speakers and outdoor fireplaces without any additional information.

To see prices or more details, a user will have to choose an item.

The major new feature of the iPhone application, which originally launched more than a year ago, will be a shopping list with integrated voice dictation using Nuance’s speech recognition, and discounts through a partnership with Coupons.com.

The app will be available as soon as it receives Apple’s approval.

This app gets pretty close to what many companies have been describing as mobile commerce — minus near field communication that would allow users to tap and pay. And, at Wal-Mart’s scale, this is truly something for the mass market.

Thomas said 90 percent of consumers who come to a Wal-Mart store on a weekly basis come with a shopping list.

The iPhone shopping list feature will allow people to enter items manually using predictive text. Type “cheddar,” and you’ll see a number of cheese brands and the price of each item.

Consumers will also be able to enter items using their voice. When Thomas demonstrated it to me, the app was fairly accurate. It recognized orange juice and sour cream as one item each, but Campbell’s soup came up as two.

Because the real price is listed, budget-conscious shoppers can decide how much to pay for groceries before even getting to the store. Coupons from Coupons.com will also be integrated into the shopping experience. You might type in “yogurt,” but decide on Yoplait for the discount.

For some stores, Wal-Mart has given consumers the ability to find out what aisle the items are in from the phone. That capability will roll out to more stores as it comes out of beta. Eventually, the information could be overlaid on a map to show the most efficient route for getting all of your items.

Thomas also said the company anticipates being able to store shoppers’ receipts electronically, so that items purchased will be uploaded to an individual’s device, making it easier to create shopping lists in the future.

“We think of your mobile phone as your loyalty card. We don’t have cards but we think of it in the sense that you can use your phone to surface real-time discounts,” he said.

The applications were built by @WalMartLabs in Silicon Valley, which serves as the technology hub for the Bentonville, Ark.-based retailer.

In the mobile payments game of one-upmanship, Square has thrown down the gauntlet by making mobile payments hands-free.

With mobile payments, we’ve seen the tap, the swipe, the passcode and all sorts of other innovations.

But in this game of one-upmanship, Square has thrown down the gauntlet by announcing this morning that it has made the payment process hands-free.

The San Francisco company, which was recently valued at $1 billion, said it has made it as easy to pay as saying your name.

A new version of its application, called Card Case, will leverage geo-fencing capabilities in Apple’s latest operating system update for the iPhone. The technology will identify when a person is within 100 meters of a favorite merchant.

Square’s Director of Products Megan Quinn explains that when a shopper is within range, a tab at that establishment will automatically open — without that person ever touching his or her iPhone. Once the user places an order and goes to pay, all they have to do is give their name.

The merchant will see on its iPad that a tab has been opened in that person’s name from inside the Square app.

Once a customer gets outside of the 100-meter range again, the tab will automatically close, whether a transaction was conducted or not. In theory, this means it would only be open for a few minutes if the shopper simply walked by a coffee shop and didn’t stop.

In addition to having to have an iPhone with the latest operating system, the consumer will also have to designate shopping establishments at which tabs could be automatically opened.

Since Square opened it up eight weeks ago, 20,000 merchants nationwide have joined the Card Case app’s directory.

In May, Square unveiled its mobile payments strategy for small retailers, including the iPhone and Android applications for consumers and the iPad software for merchants. Before that, it had focused primarily on allowing small businesses to accept credit cards using a swipe accessory plugged into a smartphone’s headphone jack.

Quinn said the most obvious benefits to the new features are speed and ease of use; however, there’s a more touchy-feely reason, too. “We’ve removed the artifacts from the experience, so it’s about the interaction between the merchant and the customers.”

In other words, it’s like walking into Cheers, where everybody knows your name.

While there may be an app for that, there's likely not a mobile Web site. Google kicks off an awareness campaign with an initiative to learn how mobilize your Web site.

Despite the proliferation of smartphones, very few companies have bothered to make surfing the Web a good experience on the phone. That’s how Google sees it, anyway.

To address that perceived problem, Google is kicking off an awareness campaign today to promote building sites that render better on smaller screens.

After all, maybe there’s not always an app for that — or there doesn’t always have to be.

The project, called HowtoGoMo.com, is a public service announcement of sorts that explains why you may need a standalone mobile site — and, if you agree, what to do about it.

The promotional site, which has been delayed for a week, was officially rolled out this morning and detailed in a blog post.

In an interview, Google’s director of mobile, Jason Spero, explained that the purpose of the site is to walk companies through the process of deciding to build a standalone mobile site. Spero joined Google through the acquisition of AdMob, the mobile ad network.

Amazingly, while Apple has successfully convinced everyone that there needs to be an application for everything found on the Internet, mobile needs have not translated as widely to the need for mobile Web sites.

A survey conducted by Equation Research found that two out of three mobile users have encountered problems when accessing Web sites on their phones over the past 12 months. Load time is the top complaint; more than half reported that they had trouble accessing a site from the phone, and 40 percent said they’d use a competing site if they had to.

Beyond being able to view a Web site on a smaller screen, a mobile version could make it easier to book reservations, buy tickets or look up information with fewer clicks.

The new Google site is a resource center that links to a growing list of 15 to 20 vendors and agencies that can help with all aspects of building a mobile site. The site also has an emulator that shows how your site looks on a phone, and offers case studies from other companies.

Spero said the site is not about making money for Google — well, at least not directly.

If more sites were mobile-ready, Google could conceivably help them with mobile ad campaigns. But right now, Spero said, so many conversations for Google’s mobile advertising division start from scratch because so many companies still don’t have mobile properties.

“Google’s interest here is people being able to do business on mobile phones, and once they can, we can offer a great marketing solution for them,” he said. “Having a proper mobile Web site or an app is a prerequisite to marketing to mobile users.”

Shopify has secured $15 million in a second round of funding -- which might give it the extra padding it needs after eBay announced last week that it had entered the same space.

Ten months after announcing its first round of capital, Shopify has secured $15 million to continue to fuel its growth.

And it might just need that extra padding, since eBay announced — at a big, splashy event last week — that it had entered the same space.

Shopify creates tools and templates to power online storefronts that sell merchandise ranging from stuffed Angry Birds to the latest in protective cases for the iPad.

Investors include Bessemer Venture Partners, FirstMark Capital, Felicis Ventures and Georgian Partners. The first round for $7 million was closed in December.

Tobias Lütke, Shopify’s CEO and co-founder, told me that over the past year the company managed to blow through its two-year plan in six months. Shopify has grown from 10,000 storefronts to 16,000 in 80 countries and has more than doubled its staff to 80; it expects to have 130 employees in the next year.

Lütke declined to provide any specific figures, but back in December he said Shopify was processing more than $100 million in revenues from all of the sites combined.

Along with supporting the growth, Lütke said, some of the capital will go toward unspecified acquisitions.

One acquisition is already making a big contribution: Shopify purchased a company that supported e-commerce on an iPhone application, and already 5 percent of sales on all of the sites it supports come from Android, iOS and mobile Web (not including tablets, because Lütke doesn’t believe those are mobile devices).

The funding will also go toward the Shopify Fund, a $1 million kitty that will finance developers to create e-commerce widgets that plug in to Shopify’s architecture. So far, a number of plugins have been developed, starting with QuickBooks, Mail Chimp and Hubspot.

Shopify was founded in 2006 as an online storefront selling snowboards and other winter apparel. That’s when Lütke figured out how difficult it was to start an online store — he decided to shut down the storefront and focus on reselling the software it had built for Shopify’s own use.

Other merchants Shopify works with include Tesla Motors, Amnesty International and the Foo Fighters.

Last week, eBay unveiled X.commerce, which is designed to help any size retailer — from family-owned stores to Toys “R” Us — stay current as shopping goes online and mobile. The platform has been slowly coming together over the past year as eBay has made several acquisitions, including the purchase of Magento, one of Shopify’s main competitors.

It is eBay’s goal to provide a package of e-commerce services to retailers for free, and use it as a lead-generation tool for its more high-margin services, like PayPal and GSI Commerce.

Shopify charges a flat monthly fee depending on the size of the retailer, and also charges developers a percentage of each application sold on its platform, just like eBay.

Zynga is planning to unveil "brand-spankin' new play" at a press event tomorrow in San Francisco, where it is expected to share its plans for leveraging Facebook's new mobile platform.

Zynga CEO Mark Pincus

Zynga is planning to unveil “brand-spankin’ new play” at a press event tomorrow in San Francisco, where it is now expected to share its plans for leveraging Facebook’s new HTML5 mobile platform.

Facebook’s platform, which was announced this afternoon, will run on Apple’s iOS devices and across the mobile Web. It will allow game developers to connect versions of the same application on PCs and mobile devices.

To do so, developers will build the applications in HTML5, which is an emerging common Web language, rather than the more commonly used Adobe Flash technology.

In addition to “selected titles” from Zynga, game developers EA, Moblyng, Storm8 and Wooga are expected to launch games on the platform. A Zynga spokesperson declined to say too much about tomorrow’s event, but confirmed it “will have HTML5 games coming soon to Facebook’s mobile apps site.” The event is likely to include other announcements, as well.

CJ Prober, SVP at EA Interactive, said, “HTML 5 is going to allow us to bring our Facebook social games to mobile users while addressing recent fragmentation challenges faced by the industry. While Flash has worked great for us in a PC environment, it is not supported on iOS and it performs inconsistently on Android, rendering most of our Facebook games unplayable in mobile browsers.”

The Sims Social will be playable immediately on the new iPad app, and the Sim’s mobile app for Facebook’s platform is coming later this fall.

Storm8 CEO Perry Tam is looking forward to all the new eyeballs for the three games that are already live on Facebook’s mobile apps. “Facebook has created a viral channel where millions of people can encounter our games,” he said. “That definitely makes us more interested in developing for Facebook.”

Zynga’s event tomorrow is called “Zynga Unleashed,” hinting at how its games will work on mobile or without wires.

But the struggle to make one cohesive game play across multiple devices has not been totally fixed. Apple does not want to relinquish its lucrative relationships with game players, where it collects 30 percent of all in-app purchases. Facebook, meanwhile, takes the same cut on the Web.

On the new mobile platform, Apple’s payments will take precedence on iOS devices. As Liz Gannes wrote in her story today:

On the downside, there’s one place Facebook wasn’t able to negotiate a consistent experience for users: payments. This was a major sticking point in ongoing discussions with Apple, as I’d written last week.

Facebook Credits can’t be used to pay for virtual goods within native iOS apps or mobile Web apps running within a Facebook app on iOS. Instead, users will have to buy separate in-app currency through Apple’s own in-app payment system.

And this after Facebook just required all of its game developers to switch to exclusive use of Credits earlier this year.

“We realize there’s some inconsistency,” [Facebook CTO Bret] Taylor admitted. He wouldn’t say if Facebook gets a share of revenue for in-app purchases it refers to Apple.

EBay's new ad campaign kicked off this week to promote something a little unexpected: Shopping from a mobile phone.

EBay’s new marketing campaign kicked off this week, with six 30-second TV commercials appearing on some of the most popular cable shows to promote something a little unexpected: Shopping from a mobile phone.

The spots will appear on “Top Gear,” “SportsCenter,” “Tosh.0,” “The Daily Show,” “Top Chef” and “The Rachel Zoe Project.”

The campaign’s tagline is “When it’s on your mind, it’s on eBay.”

We knew that the ad campaign was coming. While eBay hasn’t advertised in awhile, it decided now is the right time, after spending the last year redesigning its site to no longer focus exclusively on auctioning off used goods.

In fact, 62 percent of eBay’s current listed items are being sold for a set price, and 70 percent are new.

The ad campaign, which will also feature QR codes and online ads — including YouTube and Yahoo homepage takeovers — was created by independent San Francisco ad agency Venables Bell & Partners.

It’s not too shocking that eBay is targeting mobile users for this campaign.

This holiday season will likely be the biggest shopping event ever for mobile (only because it’s still so new), with tablets driving a lot of so-called “couch commerce.”

By the end of the year, eBay expects mobile sales to exceed $4 billion. Other e-commerce leaders, such as Amazon, are not as vocal about their mobile revenues, but are equally investing in applications and tools for shoppers to use on the go.

EBay’s apps have been downloaded 50 million times and generate an astonishing amount of traffic — one purchase is made every second. That breaks down to a pair of shoes sold every nine seconds, and 2,000 cars every week.

New York-based CityPockets is expanding into one of the biggest trends in daily deals by acquiring DealBurner, which sends a text message to users when a deal is located nearby.

New York-based CityPockets is expanding into one of the biggest trends in daily deals by acquiring DealBurner, which sends a text message to users when a deal is located nearby.

CityPockets, which is only about a year old, is acquiring the company in an all-stock transaction. As part of the deal, DealBurner founder Jason Fertel will become director of engineering.

Both Groupon and LivingSocial are pushing aggressively to roll out offers that can be purchased and redeemed immediately, rather than having to wait a day. Currently, users must search for offers, rather than having deals pushed to them automatically, based on their location.

Today, CityPockets lets users manage their daily deals purchases in one place, whether they were bought from Groupon, LivingSocial or any of about 30 other providers. In April, it launched a marketplace that allows people to sell deals that they are unlikely to use.

Co-founder Cheryl Yeoh said that with the addition of DealBurner, the goal will be for users to be able to buy those unwanted vouchers on the go, and use them immediately for a restaurant or spa they might be visiting — whether it’s new or something someone else bought but won’t be using.

“I see it going to a more mobile solution, where you can buy and redeem instantly, rather than having to wait for a day. It’s the aggregation of past, present and instant,” she said.

Yeoh said DealBurner will aggregate the secondary marketplace with offers from both Groupon Now and LivingSocial Instant, which are the company’s respective marketplaces for same-day offers.

If you sign up for DealBurner and link your Foursquare and other check-in services to the app, it will send you a text message when one of these deals is available for your location, eliminating the need to have to manually open multiple applications and look for deals around you.

Foursquare and other services are already aggregating offers and showing them in their apps. Yeoh says CityPockets isn’t trying to compete with Foursquare, since it is trying to be a more comprehensive service.

Yeoh says CityPockets currently has 100,000 vouchers loaded into its system, with a cumulative value of about $5 million. She said that the average user has purchased 24 deals, of which nine are unused and still valid. That’s way above the four deals that Groupon reports as the average for its customer.

Yeoh launched the company with Jhony Fung at LaunchBox Digital’s Fall 2010 incubator program and has raised $750,000 from Great Oaks Venture Capital. With the addition of DealBurner’s Fertel, there will now be five employees.

Apple's new Lion operating system is a giant step in the merger of the personal computer and post-PC devices like tablets and smartphones, says Walt.

With its iPhones and iPads, Apple has led people toward a new way of operating digital devices that relies on direct manipulation of items with finger gestures, not a mouse and scroll bars. App icons are arrayed front and center, not buried deep in a file system or limited to a strip at the bottom of the screen.

<param name="flashvars" value="videoGUID=2AFD402A-58B5-4890-810C-E0EDB55A2EBD&playerid=4001&plyMediaEnabled=1&configURL=http://m.wsj.net/video-players/&autoStart=false" base="http://s.wsj.net/media/swf/"name="microflashPlayer">
[ See post to watch video ]

Now, Apple is bringing those concepts and others to the personal computer via its most radical new Macintosh operating system version in years. It’s called Lion and it goes on sale Wednesday for $29.99—a price that allows installation on as many personal Macs as you own.

Lion is a giant step in the merger of the personal computer and post-PC devices like tablets and smartphones. It demotes the venerable scroll bar at the side of windows and documents, relying primarily on direct manipulation of documents and lists. It eliminates the need to save your work, automatically saving every version of every document. It resumes programs right where you left off. It can display programs, or an array of all your app icons, in multiple full screens you simply swipe through. And it elevates the role of multitouch gestures and adds new ones.

The new system doesn’t turn a Mac into a tablet. It retains traditional computer features not present on smaller devices—like the usual file system, multiple windows, the mouse and physical keyboard. It still runs traditional Mac programs, still can handle Adobe Flash, and doesn’t run iPhone or iPad apps. It doesn’t use a touch screen, instead continuing to rely on the touch pad to perform finger gestures.

But it’s a big change. Lion also is a harbinger of things to come. Apple’s historic rival, Microsoft, is working on its own radical overhaul of the dominant Windows PC operating system, due next year, which is also aimed at putting multitouch and other concepts borrowed from smartphones and tablets front and center.

I’ve been testing Lion on four Macs, and I like it. I believe its many new features—250 in all—make computing easier and more reliable. I found upgrading easy, and compatibility with existing apps to be very good. Only one app I use frequently proved incompatible, and its maker says a new revision solves that problem.

I only suffered one crash in Lion. It occurred on one of many occasions I used iTunes, but Apple says a forthcoming version of iTunes made for Lion should eliminate that.

Pressing a special key on a new Mac, or an icon on an old one, brings up a full screen, iPad-like display of app icons.

To take full advantage of new features such as full-screen mode (which hides menus), auto-saving and auto-resuming, programs will have to be rewritten. But, in my tests, current versions ran fine. I am writing this column on a MacBook Air running Lion using an unrevised version of Microsoft Word for the Mac, with no problems.

An Adjustment Process

There are, however, downsides to anything this new and major. In my view, the biggest of these is that switching to Lion will require a major adjustment even for veteran Mac users, though it will be easier for those who use iPhones or iPads. Lion will significantly increase the learning curve for Windows users switching to the Mac.

One of the biggest changes is in scrolling. Instead of moving the top of a page upward by dragging the scroll bar down, or moving your fingers downward on the touch pad, you do the opposite—you just push the page up. A scroll bar appears only while scrolling. (Older programs may still have the traditional scroll bar.)

Standard programs and features like Apple Mail are significantly different, too, and there are smaller changes in almost every corner of the operating system, including some keyboard shortcuts. Just mastering all the new and altered touch-pad gestures—a couple of which are so unnatural I actually had to practice them—will take time. (Luckily, almost all of the actions performed by the gestures can also be done with a mouse, icons, menu commands, or keys.)

If you dislike some of these changes, Apple provides settings to return to traditional scrolling, the classic Mail layout, and to turn off gestures and other things.

Upgrading

Another big change is in the way Lion is being distributed. It won’t be sold on a disk, initially only via download from the Mac App Store. Since it’s a 4 gigabyte download, that could be a problem for people with slow Internet connections. Apple says its stores will help such users with the download, and that it will sell Lion on a USB thumb drive for $69 in August.

In my tests, the download alone took under half an hour on a very fast connection, and about an hour and a half on a more typical one. Once I downloaded the product, the rest of the installation took about an hour.

Also, you can only upgrade to Lion directly from the prior OS version, Snow Leopard. So, if you’re running an earlier version, you’ll first have to pay to upgrade to Snow Leopard.

Each auto-save creates a “version” of a document and all the versions can be viewed in a visual stack.

In addition, Macs with the older PowerPC processors can’t run Lion, and even some of the earliest Macs with Intel processors are shut out. These are mainly machines released in 2006. Older programs originally designed for PowerPC, which still ran on Snow Leopard, will no longer work in Lion. The best known of these is Intuit’s Quicken 2007.

Migrating

Even if you buy a new Mac with Lion pre-installed and your older Mac has Snow Leopard, you’ll have to download a new version of Apple’s migration program for Snow Leopard in order to move over all your programs, settings and files. The company made this new migration utility available on Tuesday. When I tried to migrate my stuff from a Snow Leopard machine to Lion using the current migration program—normally a strength for Apple—the process failed. Apple sent me the new version and it worked.

Lion also introduces a new migration feature that will move data and settings—but not programs—from a Windows PC to a Mac, though it requires a free Windows migration utility that Apple couldn’t provide in time for this review.

New Macs

Speaking of Macs with Lion pre-installed, Apple also is upgrading its thin and fast MacBook Air laptops so they use faster chips from Intel. It’s killing off the bottom model of its laptop line, the plain MacBook. But the new MacBook Airs, available Thursday, have the same design, prices and base storage capacity as their predecessors, so this review is focused on Lion.

Features

Here are some of the main new features in Lion:

• Auto-Save and Versions: Apps running in Lion automatically save your work when you pause or every five minutes. There is no interruption during this process and you can still save manually. This isn’t a new idea, but it’s implemented beautifully and can work on all programs whose authors issue new versions to take advantage of it. Right now, it works on some of Apple’s own programs.

The best part of this is that each auto-save creates a “version” of your document and you can view all these versions in a visual stack arranged by date, next to your current version. You can swap back to an older version, or even copy and paste text from one version to another. These versions are created by storing the changes behind the scenes, not by creating numerous files.

To prevent auto-saving, you can lock a document and, for privacy, when you share or transfer a document, only the latest version is copied or sent.

• Resume: If you relaunch a program, any document you were working on appears again with the cursor right where it was, and even any highlighting is preserved. If you restart the Mac, all your programs are resumed in this manner, unless you check a box to prevent this.

• Full-screen apps: You can launch some apps, or individual browser tabs, in a full screen, by just clicking on an icon at the top right. In full screen, the menu bar and other controls are hidden unless you move the cursor to the top of the screen.

• Launchpad: Pressing a special key on a new Mac, or an icon on an old one, brings up an iPad-like display of all your app icons in full screen. If they occupy more than one screen, you just swipe through them.

• Mission Control: One of the nicer features on the Mac was called Exposé, which, with one click, showed all your open windows in miniature. Now, it’s been subsumed into something called Mission Control, which does the same thing, but also displays any fullscreen apps or extra desktops. I found it cluttered and wished the simpler, prior feature had been retained.

• Gestures: The Mac already had a variety of iPhone-like gestures you could perform on the touch pad. But Lion has changed some of these and added more. One I liked: You can double-tap with two figures to resize a section of a Web page or PDF to zoom in to fill the screen, just like on the iPhone or iPad. Two I dislike: the gestures for calling up Launchpad and Mission Control require pinching or zooming with three fingers and a thumb—a clumsy method for such important features.

• Mail: Apple’s Mail app has been totally overhauled to look and work more like the Mail app on the iPad. One particularly nice feature is that it sports a beautiful optional conversation mode, which combines and numbers each message in a thread. It also hides duplicate emails. There are too many changes to detail here, but, after hating the new Mail at first, I have come to like it. And you can switch to Classic mode if you wish.

The Bottom Line

The past two major computer operating system releases, Windows 7 and Snow Leopard, were incremental. Lion is very different. It’s a big leap, and gives the Mac a much more modern look and feel for a world of tablets and smartphones. If you are willing to adjust, it’s the best computer operating system out there.

Harry Potter's final installment of the massively popular film franchise is on its way to breaking all kinds of records, assisted by nearly magical online and mobile presales that took place in the 45 days leading up to its debut.

Harry Potter’s final installment of the massively popular film franchise has already garnered at least $43.5 million in ticket sales as of this morning and is on track to break the opening day record currently held by Batman’s “The Dark Knight.”

Helping to achieve these records were nearly magical online and mobile presales that took place in the 45-days leading up to its debut.

Comcast-owned Fandango, which sells tickets online and through mobile applications to more than 16,000 screens, reports it sold more midnight and early morning show tickets for “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2”’ than it did for the late night openings of any other movie (including “The Dark Knight” and “Twilight”‘s “New Moon”).

It said many of the sales were for screenings starting at midnight, and that in total, more than 6,000 showtimes sold out on Fandango between midnight and the wee hours of the morning.

In all, the movie represented 93 percent of the day’s total ticket sales from its site.

Fandango charges a service fee of $1.25 for each ticket sold, but it’s difficult to say how much it would have grossed from the movie since a spokesperson declined to say how many individual tickets the 6,000 showtimes represented.

Fandango’s closest competitor MovieTickets.com also reported strong sales, reports MovieCityNews.com. As of Wednesday, it had sold more tickets for “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2″ than any other movie released in 2011 — and that sales exceeded all ticket sales for “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.”

Variety is reporting that as of 1 pm Pacific time on Friday, the movie had already collected $24 million in domestic day-time sales, putting it on pace to break the record currently being held by “The Dark Knight.” That’s in addition to the $43.5 million in midnight sales.

If the pace continues, it may garner $80 million, which would far exceed Dark Knight’s $$67.2 million in opening day receipts.

The InterContinental Hotels Group has been experimenting with mobile for years, but it wasn't until recently that it started to pay off.

The InterContinental Hotels Group has been experimenting with mobile for years, but it wasn’t until recently that it started to pay off.

The hotel group, which includes such properties as the Holiday Inn, Hotel Indigo and Crowne Plaza brands, said it recorded $10 million in mobile revenues in April, jumping from only $1 million in the same period a year earlier.

Michael Menis, InterContinental Group’s VP of Global Interactive Marketing, said the growth is not a surprise, since they’ve been anticipating it for awhile.

“I think we are at an interesting time related to mobile. We are seeing the convergence of consumer adoption and platforms.” But, he said, “it’s still in its infancy.”

InterContinental, which does all of its own mobile development in-house, hopes to build off what it has learned over the past year by launching seven new iPhone applications — one for each of its properties.

In 2010, it released a Priority Club Rewards app, which catered to its most loyal users, for iPhone and Android. That application, which is only accessible through a free membership, has generated a bulk of the revenues.

Here are some of the lessons InterContinental has learned:

A full 65 percent of bookings occur within one day of the actual visit (despite offering no last-minute incentives on the application).

Roughly half of users book reservations from the app, whereas half use the mobile browser.

Of the people who use the browser, about half use it to find a phone number and make a call, while the more frequent bookers use the apps.

The rewards app, launched last year, has been downloaded more than 200,000 times on iPhone and 60,000 times on Android.

In just over a year, the hotel group has seen a nearly 1,000 percent increase in room night bookings from mobile devices, and in the first five months of the year, it has already surpassed last year’s total nights booked from mobile.

With the introduction of several branded apps for each hotel property, the company hopes to generate even more revenues, and also create more ways for guests to connect with the various properties, which include InterContinental Hotels & Resorts, Hotel Indigo, Crowne Plaza Hotels & Resorts, Holiday Inn Hotels and Resorts, Holiday Inn Express, Staybridge Suites and Candlewood Suites.

The new applications will allow users to find and book hotel rooms, check rates and view or cancel reservations. They will also emphasize finding last-minute rooms by quickly identifying a person’s location to offer nearby locations and available rooms.

InterContinental is not the only one to discover that customers are frequently scrambling to book a last-minute reservation by phone. In fact, several companies have recently launched mobile initiatives with similar ambitions.

Other features will be rolled out over time to each app that fits with the individual hotel’s brand.

Bill Keen, InterContinental Group’s Director of Mobile Solutions, said, for example, that the Crowne Plaza typically serves business customers, so the application may offer tips on how to be more productive, whereas the Holiday Inn brand is more about family.

One specific feature could also use location-based services. Keen said it could use geofencing to identify when the guest is getting close to the hotel and push out a coupon for dinner, preempting the person from stopping to get something to eat on the way there.

Facebook's payment system will be available virtually worldwide starting next month with additional support coming in 13 countries in Latin American and Asia.

Update: A Facebook spokesperson clarified that it was already these 13 markets, however, they will now be offering additional payment methods through Live Gamer that were not previously available. The biggest change is that developers in these countries have the opportunity to be paid out directly to their bank accounts. The story has been updated to reflect these changes.

Facebook’s payment system will be available virtually worldwide starting next month with additional support coming in 13 countries in Latin American and Asia.

For those who don’t know, Facebook Credits is the currency inside all games on the social network and acts very similarly to Apple’s iTunes.

And, just like Apple, Facebook keeps 30 percent of the revenues and shares 70 percent with developers.

The expansion to more countries coincides with the looming July 1 deadline, which will require all developers on Facebook to use credits instead of other third-party payment systems.

To add payment methods in these final countries, Facebook has partnered with Live Gamer, a New York-based company that powers microtransactions in 23 countries around the world. Facebook has similar deals with companies, such as PlaySpan, which was recently acquired by Visa. Here’s a full list of all the payment providers Facebook works with around the globe.

For Facebook, partnerships are key since the billing solutions can vary drastically from country-to-country.

In a blog post, Facebook told developers: “Through these improvements, we’re now able to support developers in virtually all countries.”

The countries affected are: Japan, Korea, Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, Singapore, Brazil, Argentina, Chile and Mexico. The deal is expected to go live in July.

In addition, Facebook will also support payouts to developers in all countries, except where the government has prohibited it. That means, developers will be able to receive revenues through bank accounts or PayPal.

Facebook is able to operate in 15 currencies, including the Japanese Yen, the Australian dollar, the Hong Kong dollar, the Norwegian Krone, the Turkish Lira and others.

Today, Zynga is rolling out a mobile version of CityVille, the most popular game on Facebook. The game will be familiar to those who already play, except for a couple key differences.

Today, Zynga is rolling out a mobile version of CityVille, the most popular game on Facebook.

But it has fews ties to the social network version, which is being played by more than 18 million people a day.

In fact, CityVille Hometown is a standalone game for iPhone and the iPad. It will launch in Canada as soon as this week, and then become available later globally in four additional languages.

Justin Cinicolo, Zynga’s General Manager of Mobility, said the game will be familiar to those who already play, but there will be a couple of key differences.

For example, the mobile version will be used to build a small town vs. a large metropolis on Facebook. Players will also have their choice of choosing computer-generated people to live in their buildings, instead of real-life friends.

One area where there will be some overlap between the games is in gifting and sharing resources. Mobile players will be able to swap energy and send and receive special limited edition items to players on Facebook.

The free game will be monetized through virtual goods, which users will be able to purchase through in-app payments on the iPhone.

In an earlier interview, Zynga’s SVP of Mobile David Ko told me the company is taking two approaches to the market: building games first for mobile that are not on the PC, and developing applications that are an extension of mobile.

Last week, it launched Hanging With Friends on iPhone, a hangman game that closely follows the popular Scrabble-like game Words With Friends. Ko said it will soon be on pace to release one game every quarter.

Many social game companies are looking at mobile as a way to diversify, given the dominance of Facebook.

Ko said using mobile to hedge their bets on Facebook “is the wrong way to think about it. … Where are people going today to be social? It’s on Facebook. But mobile has the opportunity to be larger than the PC.”
