				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The Web discovery start-up <a href="http://www.stumbleupon.com/">StumbleUpon</a> has hired Japjit Tulsi, who was previously a director of engineering at Google, as its VP of engineering, filling the role it had previously tried to give to former Yahoo CTO and EVP Products Ari Balogh.</p>
<p><a href="http://allthingsd.com/files/2011/07/aribalogh.jpg"><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-95358" title="aribalogh" src="http://allthingsd.com/files/2011/07/aribalogh-189x285.jpg" alt="" width="151" height="228" /></a>What&#8217;s a little odd about the situation is that <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110516/former-yahoo-cto-ari-balogh-joins-stumbleupon/">we wrote only two months ago</a> about StumbleUpon&#8217;s new VP of engineering hire, which at the time was Balogh (pictured at right).</p>
<p>Balogh, it turns out, never got to StumbleUpon. He did the interview about the new gig with <strong>AllThingsD</strong> after agreeing to join, but then decided to take another offer to be VP of storage infrastructure products at Google, where he is now. (Balogh declined to comment on the situation.)</p>
<p>Meanwhile, Tulsi will report to StumbleUpon CEO Garrett Camp, who previously led engineering himself. Tulsi will focus on scaling, advertising and mobile projects.</p>

<p>Tulsi (pictured left) was persuaded to join StumbleUpon after six years at Google spent on products like Google Analytics and YouTube. He said in an interview this week he was particularly interested in working with StumbleUpon&#8217;s &#8220;strong co-founders,&#8221; who sold their company to eBay but then bought it back and continue to be engaged.</p>
<p>Plus, it&#8217;s working; StumbleUpon now has 15 million users and gives one billion content recommendations per month. <a href="http://gs.statcounter.com/#social_media-US-daily-20110601-20110706">According to StatCounter</a>, StumbleUpon has been referring more traffic to other Web sites than Facebook since mid-June.</p>
<p>And StumbleUpon feels like home, in a way. Tulsi is the 20th former Googler at StumbleUpon, and there are only 80 people at the San Francisco-based company.</p>
<p>Tulsi, by the way, actually did start on Tuesday, so it seems unlikely there will be any funny business this time around.</p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Former Yahoo CTO and EVP Products Ari Balogh is to become StumbleUpon&#8217;s VP of engineering, the company said this morning.</p>
<p>Balogh said in an interview that his projects will include &#8220;a continuing and unrelenting focus on the recommendation technology,&#8221; plus improving features that indoctrinate new users and engage returning users, as well as extending StumbleUpon&#8217;s development of the open-source Hadoop database HBase.</p>
<p><a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/files/2011/05/arielogh_0006-150x150.jpg"><img src="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/files/2011/05/arielogh_0006-150x150.jpg" alt="" title="arielogh_0006-150x150" width="150" height="150" class="alignright size-full wp-image-6779" /></a>Balogh had <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100408/confirmed-yahoo-cto-and-chief-product-officer-balogh-to-leave-company/?mod=ATD_search">left Yahoo</a> last April, citing &#8220;personal priorities&#8221; and a specific family situation.</p>
<p>He said that those issues were resolved last summer, and around the beginning of this year he started looking at various technical and operating roles at both larger companies and start-ups.</p>
<p>Balogh will join StumbleUpon June 1, reporting to StumbleUpon CEO Garrett Camp.</p>
<p>StumbleUpon previously did not have a similar role, with its engineering team reporting to Camp directly. With 70 employees, that was getting understandably unwieldy.</p>
<p>But Balogh said he appreciates that StumbleUpon is small compared to where he came from. &#8220;It&#8217;s not like Yahoo where there&#8217;s a huge chain of platforms,&#8221; he said. &#8220;It&#8217;s a rapid delivery model.&#8221;</p>
<p>StumbleUpon has 15 million monthly users and one billion recommendations per month. It recently raised $17 million to support continuing growth after being spun out of eBay in 2009. eBay had bought the company back in 2007 for $75 million in cash.</p>

<p>Sorry, folks, but&#8211;despite reports&#8211;Yahoo will not be unveiling another new organizational structure this week.</p>
<p>In actuality, the beleaguered Internet giant is just cleaning up from last week&#8217;s shake-up&#8211;in which it announced that a chunk of its <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100930/yahoo-confirms-exec-departures-the-internal-memo-from-the-foxhole/">top media and sales leadership was leaving</a>&#8211;as well as settling in new hires made in recent months by its relatively new product head, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100419/yahoo-confirms-former-microsoft-exec-blake-irving-hired-as-chief-product-officer">Blake Irving</a>.</p>
<p>In fact, those changes in Irving&#8217;s unit have resulted in the departure of two more execs. That would be former SVP of Media Products and Solutions Jeff Kinder and SVP for Cloud Computing Shelton Shugar, who are on their way out.</p>
<p>Kinder actually left his job many weeks ago and was offered the chance to find another within Yahoo (YHOO), although sources said he has now definitely decided to leave the company on his own.</p>
<p>CEO Carol Bartz held a meeting Friday with senior leadership to go over the situation and to assure management that changes to come would stabilize the company going forward.</p>
<p>To be sure, Yahoo needs some kind of reassurance and fast.</p>
<p>BoomTown <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100929/exclusive-major-meltdown-at-yahoo-as-more-top-execs-to-depart-including-u-s-head-hilary-schneider/">broke the news last week</a> that U.S. head Hilary Schneider was departing the company (see her goodbye memo below), along with U.S. Audience head David Ko and SVP of Media Jimmy Pitaro.</p>
<p>Pitaro has since landed a big job as <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20101003/yahoos-jimmy-pitaro-lands-digital-co-president-job-at-disney-with-playdoms-john-pleasants/">co-president of the Internet unit of Disney</a> (DIS).</p>
<p>The overall corporate turmoil has put more scrutiny on Bartz. For two years, she has been trying to turn around the company, with only a modicum of success.</p>
<p>While Bartz did strike a search and online advertising partnership with Microsoft (MSFT) to better battle Google (GOOG), she has not <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100720/liveblogging-yahoos-second-quarter-earnings-call-how-do-you-solve-a-problem-like-flat-revenue">goosed flat revenue</a> nor been able to boost <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100630/as-its-stock-languishes-yahoo-does-a-buyback-to-juice-shares">Yahoo&#8217;s moribund stock</a>.</p>
<p>Perhaps more critically, she has not stopped the steady exodus of talent, especially of more senior execs.</p>
<p>Departures in the last six months include U.S. advertising sales head <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100315/exclusive-yahoos-top-ad-money-maker-bradford-leaving-for-new-job-at-demand-media/">Joanne Bradford</a>, Integrated Consumer Experiences SVP <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100528/exclusive-yahoo-front-page-head-tapan-bhat-leaves-yahoo">Tapan Bhat</a>, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100408/confirmed-yahoo-cto-and-chief-product-officer-balogh-to-leave-company">CTO Ari Balogh</a>, as well as the heads of its <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100827/exclusive-yahoo-social-platforms-head-sample-departs-for-ebay">social platform</a> and <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100823/exclusive-yahoos-communications-head-jason-titus-departs">communications product</a> units.</p>
<p>But last week&#8217;s departure trifecta of the execs running Yahoo&#8217;s powerful and successful media unit drove the talent drain issue home for many investors and other observers.</p>
<p>While each departure case was different, of course, the leavings have lent a feeling of instability inside and outside the company.</p>

<p>That has happened more quietly over the several months of reshuffling by Irving (pictured here), who came to Yahoo from Microsoft, and which I have reported on here previously several times.</p>
<p>For example, in September, Irving hired Microsoft exec <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100909/another-microsoft-exec-to-yahoo-joining-other-ex-softies">John Matheny</a> to head the communications products and communities unit.</p>
<p>Previous to that, in July, Irving brought in another old colleague from the software giant&#8211;<a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100708/yahoo-makes-another-major-product-exec-hire-from-microsoft/">Bill Shaughnessy</a>&#8211;as SVP of Product Management.</p>
<p>Thus, Irving&#8211;who is a little too busy traveling to a number of Yahoo product and technology units in Asia and India over the next weeks to announce yet another reorg&#8211;has pretty much already moved his part of the business around, although there are likely to be some more hires to come.</p>
<p>It is not unusual for a new senior exec to do this, of course, but Irving&#8217;s many moves reportedly sparked some tension between him and Schneider.</p>
<p>That might have been moot, since she had decided to leave some months ago, but was asked to stay on by Bartz.</p>
<p>To be sure, in recent months, many sources said that their relationship had become strained too as Yahoo ad sales continue to struggle, and they also disagreed on the company&#8217;s strategic direction.</p>
<p>Still, it should be noted that Schneider is staying on until a new exec is named to replace her.</p>
<p>Whatever the various machinations in the corporate suite at Yahoo, Bartz needs to find a way to convince Wall Street that she still has the ability to complete her much touted turnaround of the Silicon Valley pioneer to a new period of growth and innovation.</p>
<p>How quickly she is doing that will come into sharp relief in a few weeks when Yahoo reports its third-quarter earnings on October 19.</p>
<p>And while executive departures garner a lot of attention, that is the bottom line for Yahoo, the thing most important of all to watch.</p>
<p>Finally, given I love a good internal memo, here is, belatedly, the email that Schneider sent to her staff last week about her leaving:</p>

<p>I&#8217;m sure by now you&#8217;ve all had a chance to read Carol&#8217;s note, and know that I made the decision to move on to the next stage of my career. Our consumers look to Yahoo! as they navigate their lives, our advertisers look to Yahoo! for leadership, and publisher looks to Yahoo! for our amazing scale and reach. Our team, however, is our secret weapon!</p>
<p>Meanwhile, the search for my successor is under way and I will continue to lead our team until we make the transition.</p>
<p>Additionally. David Ko, SVP of Audience and Mobile, and Jimmy Pitaro, VP of North America Media, have decided to leave Yahoo! David and Jimmy are amazing leaders and we will miss them. Yahoo!&#8217;s leadership positions in Sports, News, Entertainment, Finance and Mobile are their legacy that we have to proudly continue.</p>
<p>Raymond Stern will be the SVP of North America Audience and will be responsible for the Audience teams. Raymond has been an integral part of Americas leadership team as the SVP of Business Development and Partnerships. Before joining Yahoo! a year ago, he held a wide range of business leadership positions, including more than 10 years as a Partner the Boston Consulting Group where he ran the Technology and Media Practice on the west coast. He also held senior leadership roles at Intuit, including CMO.</p>
<p>Raymond will immediately start diving in to the Audience business, and David and Jimmy are committed to working with Raymond through the transition. Right now, Raymond will continue overseeing the business development and partnership teams while we think through the best structure for these teams moving forward.</p>
<p>I know that transitions can create swirl&#8211;but our customers, both consumer and marketers, are looking to us for continued leadership&#8230;and I know we can deliver this.</p>
<p>You are Yahoo!&#8217;s magic, and I thank you for your tremendous commitment, leadership, and support.</p>

<p>Irving replaces <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100408/confirmed-yahoo-cto-and-chief-product-officer-balogh-to-leave-company">Ari Balogh</a>, who announced last week he is leaving the company as of June 3.</p>
<p>Balogh was also CTO, but Yahoo did not say who would get that title.</p>
<p>In related news, Prabhakar Raghavan, head of Yahoo Labs as chief scientist, will now report directly to Bartz.</p>
<p>The Yahoo announcement confirms a <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100408/exclusive-yahoo-eyes-ex-microsoft-exec-blake-irving-for-top-product-and-tech-job/">post BoomTown wrote last week</a> about the company&#8217;s effort to hire Irving, a longtime Microsoft (MSFT) exec whose last job there was corporate VP of its Windows Live Platform group.</p>
<p>He left the software giant several years ago to spend time with his family and had been teaching at Pepperdine University.</p>
<p>Irving had been at Microsoft for 15 years, always commuting to its Redmond, Wash., headquarters.</p>
<p>According to his <a href="http://www.facebook.com/blakeirving?ref=ts">Facebook page</a>, Irving now lives in laid-back San Luis Obispo, midway between Silicon Valley and Los Angeles.</p>
<p>Sources said after time off, Irving had recently become eager to re-engage in the Internet sector.</p>
<p>Yahoo has long wanted to hire Irving, many said. And in nabbing him, the timing is fortuitous, as the company is in the midst of launching its massive search and online advertising partnership with Microsoft.</p>
<p>The hiring also stems the tide of Yahoo&#8217;s exec exodus. Balogh&#8217;s parting is one of many among top Yahoo execs recently. Ad sales head <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100315/exclusive-yahoos-top-ad-money-maker-bradford-leaving-for-new-job-at-demand-media">Joanne Bradford</a> departed the company to join Demand Media, while longtime tech exec <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20091103/dozen-year-yahoo-tech-veteran-ash-patel-to-take-time-off">Ash Patel</a> said he would not return from a sabbatical he took last year.</p>

<p>Irving was most recently a professor at Pepperdine University’s Graziadio School of Business and Management in Malibu, California. In his prior role as corporate vice president of the Windows Live Platform group, Irving led a team of 4,000 to build and operate Microsoft&#8217;s Internet-scale services platform, advertiser and developer ecosystem. Irving also held a variety of development and general management positions at Microsoft.</p>
<p>Before joining Microsoft, Irving held development and product marketing management positions at Xerox Corp., Oki Electric Industry Co. Ltd. and Compaq Computer Corp. Its current exec in charge, Ari Balogh (pictured here), confirmed in an interview this afternoon that he is leaving the company.</p>
<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s probably bad timing, since we are in the midst of recharging Yahoo,&#8221; said Balogh. &#8220;But this had to do with personal priorities.&#8221;</p>
<p>By that, he was referring to personal issues in Greece, where Balogh was partially raised, related to an uncle to whom he is close. Balogh will be moving his family there this summer.</p>
<p>In a further complication, they cannot travel there by plane, because his daughter cannot fly due to issues around her hearing impairment.</p>
<p>The leading candidate for Balogh&#8217;s job at Yahoo (YHOO), said several sources, is former Microsoft (MSFT) exec Blake Irving.</p>
<p>Balogh would not comment on that, but noted Yahoo was looking at several candidates.</p>

<p>A Yahoo spokeswoman declined to comment when BoomTown asked about its discussions with Irving about the job.</p>
<p>I also reached out to Irving, but he has not responded.</p>

<p>BoomTown <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20091118/yahoos-bartz-shuffles-the-exec-deck-filling-audience-and-other-top-slots-is-the-board-next-for-a-makeover/">recently reported that Ko was the likely person</a> to take over as North American Audience head at Yahoo (YHOO), reporting to U.S. EVP Hilary Schneider.</p>
<p>With purview over programming and more for the main Yahoo media properties, such as News and Finance, he fills a slot left by the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090528/yahoo-audience-head-jeff-dossett-expected-to-depart-company/">departure of Jeff Dossett</a> in May.</p>
<p>Since then, the key Yahoo content division has been run jointly by Jimmy Pitaro, who heads Vertical Audience Experiences for Yahoo, and Tim Mayer, who is in charge of Search &#038; Social Applications, as well as the powerful homepage of Yahoo. Both now report to Ko, who joined Yahoo in 2000, sources said.</p>
<p>But, in a related move, product development for mobile has moved from under Ko to CTO and EVP of Products Ari Balogh.</p>
<p>A similar <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090222/yahoo-media-unit-to-get-a-reorg-too/">move of Yahoo&#8217;s media properties</a> took place earlier this year, shifting key tech development responsibility to a global product organization at Yahoo&#8217;s HQ in Sunnyvale, Calif.</p>
<p>Previously, as had been the case in mobile, such development had been mostly carried out by individual media properties.</p>
<p>The argument for the shift posits that centralizing product development of Yahoo offerings drives efficiencies, saves money, eliminates redundancies and accelerates growth around the world.</p>
<p>Those who do not like the idea think it is wrong to separate the development of a product from programming because the two are intricately dependent and need to be tweaked delicately.</p>
<p>But, said one source, mobile has been deemed by CEO Carol Bartz as &#8220;part of the core&#8221; at Yahoo instead of more an experimental offering as it has been viewed internally.</p>
<p>Thus, mobile apparently needs to be closely aligned to all product development going forward.</p>
<p>Ironically, one of Yahoo&#8217;s more high-profile mobile efforts, its Yahoo Go mobile software application and portal, which was launched to much fanfare at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas almost four years ago, will be shuttered Jan. 12, 2010.</p>
<p>Now, under Ko, Yahoo&#8217;s mobile efforts have been centered around building apps for smartphones, although that market has become increasingly dominated by players such as Apple (AAPL) with its iPhone, Google (GOOG) and its Android effort and many others.</p>
<p>Google also just bought an <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20091109/google-acquires-admob-for-750-million-in-stock-the-press-release">innovative mobile advertising company, AdMob</a>, which gives it a headstart in this nascent arena.</p>
<p>Without its own device and a dominating strategy, Yahoo must use its Web heft to push its content into the mobile space.</p>
<p>Presumably, that is the thinking behind giving Yahoo&#8217;s mobile and media properties the same boss.</p>
<p>Ko, who has worked in a variety of areas at Yahoo, took over as SVP of Yahoo Mobile after <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090225/connected-life-head-marco-boerries-to-leave-yahoo">Marco Boerries left in late February</a> as EVP of the Connected Device Division, which now does not exist under that name.</p>
<p>He had run Yahoo&#8217;s mobile business in the Asia Pacific region.</p>
<p>According to <a href="http://mobile.yahoo.com/newsroom/management">Ko&#8217;s Yahoo bio</a>, he previously worked at Salomon Smith Barney as a senior associate and analyst. He is a graduate of New York University&#8217;s Stern School of Business.</p>
<p>Ko, who lives in San Francisco with his family, the bio notes, inexplicably &#8220;enjoys reading tech blogs.&#8221;</p>

<p>Yahoo (YHOO) confirmed the break to BoomTown.</p>
<p>In recent days, many inside the company had mistakenly thought the 44-year-old EVP for Product Architecture &#038; Strategy was departing the company for good.</p>
<p>Actually, it&#8217;s more of a sabbatical for Patel (pictured here). But it could turn out Patel will not come back from it at all.</p>
<p>For now, Yahoo is saying he will.</p>
<p>&#8220;Ash will be taking some well-deserved time off  to spend time with his family,&#8221; said Yahoo in a statement to me. &#8220;He will be returning to Yahoo! in early 2010.&#8221;</p>
<p>In his latest of many jobs at Yahoo, where he has been employed since 1996, Patel works with its products organization, run by CTO and EVP of Products Ari Balogh, &#8220;to drive the development of a comprehensive product strategy, as well as potential strategic deals, helping to evolve and evaluate its audience product and technology strategy.&#8221;</p>
<p>It&#8217;s one of many leadership positions Patel has had at Yahoo, as the company has reorganized many times over the years, including as EVP of its Audience Products Division, EVP of Platforms and Infrastructure, SVP of Platform Engineering and chief product officer.</p>
<p>He also played a key role as architect of several major Yahoo products, such as MyYahoo!, Yahoo! Finance, Yahoo! Messenger, Yahoo! Chat and many others.</p>
<p>In fact, Patel <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080625/yahoo-reorg-will-be-announced-thursday/">ended up in a major exec role in a reorg</a> that former Yahoo CEO and co-founder Jerry Yang did in the summer of 2008.</p>
<p>But the appointment of Patel to head the new Global Products group was greeted with some internal dissent, since many were pushing for faster change and new management at the Silicon Valley icon.</p>
<p>Yang was said to have insisted that Patel remain on as planned. He reported directly to President Sue Decker.</p>
<p>Patel stayed on after new CEO Carol Bartz got the top job in January, which was the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090225/whither-ash-patel-can-longtime-yahoos-learn-new-tricks/">subject of much interest among longtime Yahoo staff</a>, since he has been one of the few true Yahoo veterans left in a high-ranking role.</p>
<p>In <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090226/new-yahoo-management-structure-the-entire-memo/">another reorg in late February</a>, this time by Bartz, Patel got his latest title and was placed under Balogh.</p>

<p>Editorial employees for Yahoo News&#8211;which is the No. 1 news site on the Web with 48.4 unique monthly visitors, according to comScore data (SCOR)&#8211;will remain in the U.S., largely located at its Santa Monica, Calif., office.</p>
<p>Sources had alerted BoomTown to the change at Yahoo&#8217;s flagship content offering this week and many I spoke to about it were deeply worried about further separating key functions in the creation of Yahoo News.</p>
<p>&#8220;We are losing more and more of our ability to make quick changes and react to new technologies, which has worked pretty well so far, since we are #1,&#8221; said one staffer. &#8220;First, we all worked together across a room, then hundreds of miles away and now it is thousands.&#8221;</p>
<p>Previously, as was <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090220/yahoo-content-model-gets-remixed-as-product-development-is-globally-centralized/">first reported here in February</a>, the distributed and regional method of developing content was shifted to a central global product development organization, with product management, engineering and UI design centered at Yahoo&#8217;s Sunnyvale, Calif., HQ under CTO Ari Balogh.</p>
<p>The argument for the shift posits that centralizing the product development of a Yahoo media offering drives efficiencies, saves money, eliminates redundancies and accelerates growth across the world.</p>
<p>Those who do not like the idea think it is wrong to separate the development of a product from the programming because the two are intricately dependent and need to be tweaked delicately.</p>
<p>In addition, they argue, it makes Yahoo media offerings, which have been largely successful, less unique and more dull.</p>
<p>Well, tough tomatoes, because Yahoo confirmed the transition to me when I inquired about it. It was announced internally several weeks ago.</p>
<p>In an interview I did yesterday afternoon with Jeff Kinder, SVP of media products and solutions, who is spearheading the change, he said it was key that Yahoo News streamline how it makes its products in order to be more innovative and responsive on a global basis.</p>
<p>Before the shift to a global system, he pointed out that Yahoo had 26 different news products worldwide, using nine content management systems.</p>
<p>&#8220;This is part of building a global media platform,&#8221; said Kinder, who leads development of Yahoo&#8217;s anchor media properties, as well as its listings and regional products around the world.</p>
<p>Kinder said the staff in Taiwan was selected to take on Yahoo News because it had been creating top-level news products and was passionate about the arena.</p>
<p>Nonetheless, similar functions for other major Yahoo content categories&#8211;Sports, Finance and Entertainment&#8211;will remain in the United States.</p>
<p>In addition, he noted, with employees in Taiwan taking over these functions at Yahoo News, it would &#8220;free up some of the talent&#8221; in Silicon Valley to work on other critical content projects.</p>
<p>Kinder dismissed worries about any logjams in the ability of U.S.-based Yahoo News staffers to make changes to offerings, either for consumers or advertising partners, noting there were weekly calls between the teams and plenty of ways to communicate online.</p>
<p>But those worried about the change said the reason for the move was more to cut costs in the content arena, which&#8211;like many parts of Yahoo&#8211;has undergone layoffs and expense reductions.</p>
<p>Countered Kinder: &#8220;We are all driving to the same goal&#8230;.This is not about cost savings, but about accelerating change and leveraging a global team.&#8221;</p>

<p>Although it&#8217;s not news that Yahoo has been readying a new version of its homepage and has spent a lot of time doing so&#8211;in fact, it&#8217;s gone all Handy Manny with a whole lot of test renovations&#8211;the Internet giant begins the massive rollout of it tomorrow.</p>
<p>The official launch of what was code-named &#8220;Metro,&#8221; which <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090214/how-is-yahoos-massive-metro-homepage-redesign-going-it-depends-on-who-you-ask/">Yahoo had previously said was coming in the fall</a>, will take place on an opt-in &#8220;beta&#8221; basis for the hundreds of millions of users in the U.S. and will be extended to France, the U.K. and India later this week.</p>
<p>When users log in, they will get a choice&#8211;for now, there will be no forcing it&#8211;to switch over to the new version, which Yahoo&#8217;s Tapan Bhat, SVP of Integrated Consumer Experiences, said in an interview with me today by phone, is the &#8220;the most fundamental change to the homepage ever.&#8221;</p>
<p>And, indeed, the new look is much different, even than previous launch candidates, featuring an almost complete rejiggering of the look and feel of the most important page at Yahoo (YHOO) and one of the most trafficked on the Internet.</p>
<p>The change is an important one for Yahoo, since its front page is perhaps its most powerful calling card to users and advertisers, as well as to Wall Street. Its homepage gets 330 million unique visitors every month.</p>
<p>Yahoo has redone its homepage many times since its founding in the mid-1990s (you can <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090720/yahoo-home-pages-over-the-last-15-years-the-good-the-bad-and-the-ugly-really-ugly/">see the various incarnations of it here</a>), but this new design is perhaps the most dramatic.</p>

<p>The most striking change is a prominent left-side &#8220;My Favorites&#8221; area, with 65 specially designed applications that users can customize, including giving a quick hovering glimpse of email, stocks and of third-party sites like Facebook.</p>
<p>Not quite a dashboard or exactly a social networking page, it feels a little as if Yahoo took a browser tab or a toolbar, put it in a vertical format and gave it some great functionality.</p>
<p>Full disclosure: <strong>All Things Digital</strong>, as well as several other Dow Jones news properties, are in its special alphabetical apps gallery, although I had no idea it would be there.</p>

<p>Yahoo also allows users to create such widgets on the fly from most any Web site and they can have up to 36 apps on the homepage.</p>
<p>There is advertising in the boxes that pop up when hovering over these apps, which is a way of dealing with the issue of purposely sending users away from Yahoo rather than keeping them there. It is a much better version of that trap.</p>
<p>&#8220;We want to be the center of people&#8217;s lives online and want to do it in an open, innovative way, all while providing a compelling experience,&#8221; said Bhat. &#8220;It marks the beginning of a renaissance of Yahoo, a renaissance where every pixel matters.&#8221;</p>

<p>After looking over the history of Yahoo&#8217;s homepages since 1994 <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090720/yahoo-home-pages-over-the-last-15-years-the-good-the-bad-and-the-ugly-really-ugly/">(see them all here)</a>, it has pretty much told a story of a site with increasingly smaller font sizes and more stuff packed on it.</p>
<p>&#8220;It had nothing to do with the user, but what Yahoo wanted the user to do,&#8221; said Bhat, rather frankly.</p>
<p>Thus, he said, everything going forward will focus on what the user wants, which, he explained, essentially boils down to a &#8220;my world&#8221; and &#8220;the world&#8221; outlook.</p>
<p>In the my-world bucket: Email, favorite Web sites, stock info. In the the-world: General news, search, what&#8217;s hot.</p>
<p>But, unlike its highly customized MyYahoo product, Bhat said that Yahoo wanted to make it easier for users to create a page where &#8220;there is destination for everything you are about in just a click or two.&#8221;</p>
<p>The programmed &#8220;Today&#8221; module remains, although users can indicate which kind of information&#8211;finance, news, entertainment&#8211;gets top billing.</p>
<p>The module is also localized, depending on the user.</p>
<p>&#8220;We wanted to provide broadcast and narrowcast in one place,&#8221; said Bhat.</p>
<p>That includes updating status, right from the homepage, including integration with social networks such as Facebook and MySpace.</p>
<p>But&#8211;in a very big mistake&#8211;there is no ability to update status to the popular microblogging service Twitter on this part of the homepage, as yet. You can make it an app, though, as Twitter can appear in your Yahoo updates.</p>
<p>And there is a big advertising module still on the right, along with a what&#8217;s-hot section. And, finally, there will also soon be complete two-way syncing with mobile devices, said Bhat.</p>
<p>Interestingly, although CEO Carol Bartz has often said internally that she does not like the color purple, which has been the company&#8217;s signature one since its founding, the main page keeps up the violet tradition with a lighter tone.</p>
<p>&#8220;Yahoo&#8217;s color is purple and it is known for that,&#8221; said Bhat (deftly not taking my delicious bait).</p>
<p>As to why it has taken so long to get its front page redone&#8211;it was originally set to debut late last year&#8211;Bhat noted that such a major shift of such a trafficked page was, <em>well</em>, complex.</p>
<p>&#8220;It involves bringing users along and also rewiring everything within Yahoo,&#8221; said Bhat, who gave Bartz credit for turbocharging the effort, since she first arrived at the troubled Silicon Valley icon in January and quickly put the brakes on the planned launch. &#8220;Now, we are looking at Yahoo holistically, all centered around the user.&#8221;</p>
<p>Time will tell if it is a success, but it is certainly a good and even innovative effort, in much the same spirit Microsoft (MSFT) has had with its new Bing search offering.</p>
<p>And while some might complain that it is not cutting-edge enough, it seems just the right amount of rejiggering and open feel for the mass of users it serves.</p>
<p>For Yahoo, at least when it comes to this one, change is indeed good.</p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Yahoo (YHOO) isn’t just selling, it is looking to buy, too.</p>
<p>The Internet web search and ad company’s chief technology officer, Ari Balogh, told the Reuters Global Technology Summit that Yahoo is looking to buy companies that will enable it to become a bigger player in social networking and revamp its family of products.</p>
<p>Balogh’s statements shouldn’t come as a complete surprise. Social networking remains a growth business, albeit one that has been hard to monetize. Yahoo has had it shares of stumbles trying to enter the space. In the past few years, the company has shut down or essentially shut down two of its previous forays into the business&#8211;Yahoo Mash and Yahoo 360, according to paidContent.org. Yahoo also fell short in its attempt to buy Facebook for around $1 billion three years ago.</p>

<p>As <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090430/microsoft-on-the-hunt-for-a-new-head-of-worldwide-online-sales-even-as-yahoo-talks-continue">I also reported last week</a>, the latest idea is one in which Yahoo (YHOO) would take over both search and display advertising sales and Microsoft (MSFT) would run the tech for both behind the scenes.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s not clear if trading other assets&#8211;such as content&#8211;or an investment in Yahoo by Microsoft are being considered too.</p>
<p>In any case, any such deal would be a major shift for both companies in their business focus and would also tether them tightly together.</p>
<p>Many think they need to be tethered, given that Google (GOOG) overwhelmingly dominates the lucrative search market. Yahoo is strong in display, although that market has been harder hit in the recent economic downturn.</p>
<p>But whether or not Yahoo and Microsoft can come to a partnership agreement&#8211;given the deep complexities of the situation, the wariness over controlling key technologies and tense history between them&#8211;is a big if, of course.</p>
<p>Still, sources on both sides seem more positive than ever before.</p>
<p>Microsoft execs, for their part, report that new Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz is much more straightforward to work with than former CEO Jerry Yang.</p>
<p>And Yahoo&#8217;s side seems convinced that Microsoft appears more willing to make a deal happen and is more flexible on terms than in previous encounters.</p>
<p>Both sides are using very small teams to discuss the possible partnership, mostly in Silicon Valley. Some of the Redmond, Wash.-based Microsoft team, in fact, are in the Bay area now.</p>
<p>Sources said those involved on the Microsoft side include: Digital head Qi Lu, a former Yahoo tech star; top M&#038;A and strategy exec Charles Songhurst; Online Audience Business SVP Yusuf Mehdi; and several others.</p>
<p>On the Yahoo side: North America EVP Hilary Schneider, who leads the efforts; General Counsel Michael Callahan; top Yahoo ad operations techie Mark Morrissey, who was key to its revival of the Panama ad system and has recently been leading product development on its new ad platform; finance SVP and Chief Treasury Officer Mike Gupta; and Products EVP and CTO Ari Balogh, although he is more in the background.</p>
<p>Of course, the only two execs who will matter, if these teams finally manage to hash out details, are Yahoo&#8217;s Bartz and Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, as well the both companies&#8217; boards.</p>
<p>Interestingly, Ballmer is slated to be at Stanford University&#8217;s Memorial Auditorium to give a lecture on innovation and entrepreneurship as part of the <a href="http://etl.stanford.edu/">Entrepreneurial Thought Leaders Seminar</a> on Wednesday afternoon.</p>
<p>Whether Ballmer is seeing Bartz on this trip or not is not clear.</p>
<p>But he has to at some point. The approval of a deal&#8211;which could be struck soon, if terms can be reached&#8211;will be entirely their call.</p>

Well, Bartz sizzled at its first-quarter earnings conference call today, tossing off some ribald words as she also handed over some tough news to chew on, announcing Yahoo's much-expected weak first-quarter results. The company also said it would cut five percent of its staff of 13,600, which is close to 700 employees.

<p>A major Yahoo investor yesterday told me that he liked what he saw so far from new Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz, but he still remained wary.</p>
<p>&#8220;I like the sizzle,&#8221; he said, referring to Bartz&#8217;s decisive take-no-prisoners style. &#8220;But I am still waiting to see if steak is there too.&#8221;</p>
<p>Well, Bartz handed over some tough news to chew on today, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090421/yahoo-first-quarter-results-are-as-meh-as-expected-will-cut-five-percent-of-staff-plus-the-full-press-release/">announcing Yahoo&#8217;s first-quarter earnings</a>, which were just as weak as expected.</p>
<p>The company reported an eight-cent-per-share profit, down from 37 cents a year ago, a 78 percent drop.</p>
<p>Revenue in the quarter came in at $1.6 billion, a 13 percent decline from last year&#8217;s $1.8 billion.</p>
<p>And Yahoo (YHOO) also said it would cut five percent of its staff of 13,600, which means layoffs of close to 700 employees.</p>
<p>BoomTown liveblogged the Yahoo earnings conference call, with Bartz and outgoing CFO Blake Jorgensen.</p>
<p>(Bartz, well known for her ribald words and sassy phrases, lobbed several, and also tossed out a small F-bomb at the very end of the conference call, so read on to the bottom.)</p>
<p><strong>2:04 p.m.:</strong> The call started off a few minutes late, but who can blame Yahoo, given the poor results? But Bartz finally came on the call with an upbeat tone.</p>

<p>&#8220;What an amazing and busy three months it&#8217;s been,&#8221; she said, outlining what she had learned so far on her whirlwind visits across the Yahoo empire and &#8220;deep dives&#8221; into the products and services of the troubled Internet giant.</p>
<p>&#8220;The most important takeaway was the importance of having a <em>&#8216;Wow!&#8217;</em> experience,&#8221; concluded Bartz, who noted the definition of that particular enthusiasm was different, depending on who you were.</p>
<p>&#8220;Wow!&#8221; did not describe the earning results, to be sure.</p>
<p>But we pressed on.</p>
<p><strong>2:08 p.m.:</strong> Bartz noted that Yahoo remained focused on investment and also renewed investment in the company.</p>
<p>She pointed to content, email, search and advertising as key building blocks of Yahoo and focused on three key goals:</p>
<p>1) Globalizing the Yahoo platform</p>
<p>2) Building &#8220;fantastic products&#8221; that deeply impact users</p>
<p>3) Investing in &#8220;industry-leading&#8221; online ad solutions</p>
<p>You know, getting back to basics of exactly what made Yahoo great <em>before</em>.</p>
<p><strong>2:09 p.m.:</strong> Bartz complimented Yahoo CTO and Product head Ari Balogh, as well as other current Yahoo staff at the Silicon Valley-based company.</p>

<p>Then she announced that Yahoo had hired Jeff Russakow (pictured here) as its new customer advocacy head.</p>
<p>I am guessing he is now the key guy in charge of monitoring the &#8220;Wow!&#8221; level.</p>
<p>Russakow is currently VP of corporate strategy for Symantec, the online security software firm, which does not trumpet Yahoo! to me.</p>
<p>So, I wonder if Yahoo engineers should build a &#8220;Wow!&#8221; meter to help Jeff?</p>
<p>Bartz then noted that Yahoo has been and will continue to &#8220;slim down our portfolio,&#8221; while continuing in investing.</p>
<p>That would mean dumping the non-&#8221;Wow!&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>2:11 p.m.:</strong> CFO Jorgensen hopped on, noting the &#8220;difficult economic environment.&#8221;</p>
<p>We noticed!</p>
<p>Jorgensen then proceeded to go through the unimpressive numbers for a while, in a voice that lulled me into a slight stupor. There was essentially no good news anywhere for Yahoo.</p>
<p>Then, he summed up and said goodbye, as he is leaving Yahoo soon and there will be a new CFO by the next quarter&#8217;s call. Jorgensen said he will be watching Yahoo &#8220;with interest.&#8221;</p>
<p>Blake! We hardly knew you! Call me anytime and we&#8217;ll chat and maybe have lunch (bring lots of internal memos!).</p>
<p><strong>2:20 p.m.:</strong> Bartz complimented Jorgensen, although she did kind of &#8220;part ways&#8221; with him.</p>
<p>Then, <em>finally</em>, came a patented Bartzism, which is that special sassy phrase or ribald word, with her noting that users were looking for a &#8220;kick-ass&#8221; experience from Yahoo.</p>
<p>She obviously could not resist, which was a good instinct.</p>
<p>Bartz soon threw in a &#8220;freakin&#8217;&#8221; too.</p>

<p>Then, she non-answered anticipated questions about Yahoo&#8217;s talks with Microsoft over a search and advertising partnership by noting, &#8220;search is a very valuable asset for Yahoo.&#8221;</p>
<p>And <em>that,</em> she said, in a Forrest Gumpism, &#8220;is all we&#8217;re going to say about search today.&#8221;</p>
<p>Also, life is a box of chocolates.</p>
<p><strong>2:25 p.m.:</strong> Bartz then discussed the economy, especially the impact on branded display advertising, which she said was not going to be killed off.</p>
<p>Brands were always important, she noted, and Yahoo could even help damaged brands revive themselves.</p>
<p>Like, um, maybe, <em>Yahoo</em>?</p>
<p>She closed the talking points part of the call on another upbeat note: &#8220;Let me say again how happy I am to be here.&#8221;</p>
<p>Us too, cuz Bartz is a definitely a live wire, as it later turned out.</p>
<p>(Bartz also announced an analysts day on Oct. 28.)</p>
<p><strong>2:29 p.m.:</strong> Now began questions from said analysts (media folks are muted, of course).</p>
<p>The first was about ad price differences, which was dull.</p>
<p>The second, though, touched on the Microsoft (MSFT) talks, with someone essentially asking if Bartz was smart enough about search to be able to entertain an offer.</p>
<p>Well, what do you think she was going to say?</p>
<p>That&#8217;s right: &#8220;I am well versed enough in the search business to say it is critical to Yahoo.&#8221;</p>
<p>Bartz also noted that she thought advertisers prefer a combined search and display experience, which felt like she was channeling Yahoo EVP Hilary Schneider.</p>
<p>But Bartz also managed to keep the door open, saying&#8211;and I just know she had a mischievous smile while she said this&#8211;&#8220;Relative to anything else related to Microsoft, no comment.&#8221;</p>
<p>She was also not gaming the economy, noting that no one knows what will happen in the future.</p>
<p>&#8220;A wise person stays to the sides and lets the economists figure it out,&#8221; said Bartz.</p>
<p><em>As if!</em></p>
<p><strong>2:33 p.m.:</strong> More questions were asked about costs and layoffs (sad!) and about ad inventory.</p>
<p>Bartz underscored the importance of its premium ad sales staff and placement over ad networks and randomness.</p>

<p>&#8220;Chanel does not want to end up next to Harley-Davidson. It kind of doesn&#8217;t work,&#8221; she asserted.</p>
<p>Well, it works for me! I mean, black leather and more black leather&#8211;what&#8217;s not to like?</p>
<p><strong>2:39 p.m.:</strong> More about globalizing the Yahoo platform, which Bartz said would take a while.</p>
<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s not like flipping a switch,&#8221; she said. &#8220;This is work, this is not just words.&#8221;</p>
<p>Bartz also talked about how non-easy the current ad management systems at Yahoo are. <em>Several times</em>.</p>
<p><strong>2:46 p.m.:</strong> A question then came about reinvestment, which was really about selling off stuff like the Asian assets.</p>
<p>No answers were forthcoming, although <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090416/yahoos-jumpcut-jumps-off-cliff-but-you-can-send-your-videos-to-yahoos-flickr">weak product groups are getting tossed off</a> the good ship Yahoo quite quickly under Bartz.</p>
<p>More questions about the economy, the ad business and another attempt to find out about the Microsoft talks.</p>
<p>&#8220;Search is important,&#8221; to consumers and advertisers of Yahoo, Bartz underscored again, noting she was not going to fall for a &#8220;tricky&#8221; question.</p>
<p>Good lord, she&#8217;s a sharpie.</p>
<p><strong>3:03 p.m.:</strong> Last up is a question about the investment in the global platform and the reorganization.</p>
<p>And, in the end, Bartz uttered the naughty word many had expected sooner.</p>

<p>It came when Bartz was on a roll about how engineers have been &#8220;scattered to the winds&#8221; at Yahoo and that there have been too many product managers overseeing things and annoying those windswept engineers.</p>
<p>She was dead right about this nagging issue at the company, as it has slowed down innovation and rollouts of key services and products.</p>
<p>&#8220;Nobody&#8217;s <em>f#*king</em> doing anything,&#8221; Bartz stated with apparent exasperation.</p>
<p>She tried to take it back quickly, adding, &#8220;I knew <em>that</em> would slip out some time.&#8221;</p>
<p>But Bartz should not take it back. <em>Never ever</em>.</p>
<p>In fact, most would agree that it was well past time that such an assessment should slip out of Yahoo.</p>

<p>Yes, more layoffs are indeed coming to Yahoo, sources confirmed to BoomTown, but perhaps even <em>more</em> than have been reported.</p>
<p>But that&#8217;s not all, as even more top-level managers are either leaving or being moved around the ever-changing organizational structure at Yahoo (YHOO).</p>
<p>That includes a longtime top sales operations exec, Dan Foehner, who is about to start at Facebook next week, as well as others contemplating leaving, on their way out or are being reshuffled.</p>
<p>In other words, business as usual at the tumultuous company, whose nickname should be &#8220;Reorg.&#8221;</p>
<p>First, the layoffs, which the <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2009/04/15/technology/companies/15yahoo.html?ref=technology">New York Times was first to report yesterday would be announced Tuesday</a> (side note to Damon&#8211;<em>this</em> is how you link to scoops) during Yahoo&#8217;s first-quarter earnings call and could impact several hundred employees.</p>
<p>The quarterly results are expected to be weak by most analysts, which is why more layoffs&#8211;which had been mentioned by the company as a possibility&#8211;are an obvious move.</p>
<p>But several internal sources said Yahoo staff is bracing for employee departures that might to be even higher, as many as 500 or more.</p>
<p>That could mean a complete lopping off or sale of various business units that Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz has been evaluating since she arrived in January.</p>
<p>Why? Well, several employees said they were told the new round of cuts will not actually take place until June and that Yahoo HR is now preparing to follow the rules required by the <a href="http://www.doleta.gov/layoff/warn.cfm">Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act.</a></p>
<p>Under the complex federal guidelines, Yahoo must provide a written WARN notice to affected employees &#8220;at least 60 calendar days in advance of covered plant closings and mass layoffs.&#8221; WARN notices are triggered for a variety of reasons, although a smaller number of layoffs across many units typically does not require it.</p>
<p><a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2009/04/no-jobs-signjpg.jpeg"><img src="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2009/04/no-jobs-signjpg.jpeg" alt="no-jobs-signjpg" title="no-jobs-signjpg" width="214" height="217" class="alignleft size-full wp-image-12286" /></a></p>
<p>A WARN notice is required, for example, when an employer shuts down a facility or operating unit within a single site of employment and lays off at least 50 full-time workers, as well as when an employer lays off 500 or more full-time workers at a single site of employment.</p>
<p>In its last two layoffs, Yahoo issued WARN notices and slashed about 2,500 jobs in total last year, leaving it with about 13,600 employees world-wide at the end of 2008.</p>
<p>But some of Yahoo managers are still leaving on their own.</p>
<p>Many top engineers, for example, <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090327/microsoft-acquiring-yahoo-one-employee-at-a-time">have taken jobs of late at Microsoft</a> (MSFT) after the software giant installed a Yahoo tech star, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20081204/microsoft-confirms-qi-lu-hired-as-digital-chief-mcandrews-out">Qi Lu</a>, as its top online exec.</p>
<p>And, BoomTown reported earlier, there have also been numerous departures of key staff recently, including: PR head <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090202/yahoo-pr-head-jill-nash-to-depart-the-company">Jill Nash</a>, Zimbra founder <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090121/zimbra-founder-satish-dharmaraj-to-depart-yahoo">Satish Dharmaraj</a> and soon, high-ranking techie <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090331/another-yahoo-to-go-venkat-panchapakesan-on-his-way-out">Venkat Panchapakesan</a>.</p>
<p>And more still, it seems.</p>
<p>Yahoo&#8217;s VP of Sales Operations Foehner, for example, is headed out after a long stint at the company and is going to Facebook, said several sources inside and outside the company.</p>
<p>On <a href="http://twitter.com/foehner">Foehner&#8217;s Twitter</a> page, he tweets about a new unnamed job, as well as an athletic endeavor (Foehner is a dedicated triathlete): &#8220;back in pleasanton. starting bike adventure on thurs. start new gig on monday. 9 weeks til CdA!&#8221;</p>
<p>There is also a lot more movement inside Yahoo, as the reorganization done by Bartz in February shakes out.</p>
<p>Typical of this is Mike Walrath, the high-profile former CEO of Right Media, an online ad exchange snapped up by Yahoo for $720 million in 2007, who is now an advertising-focused SVP at Yahoo.</p>

<p>Now Walrath is moving out from under the purview of Yahoo North America EVP Hilary Schneider and will report to Ari Balogh, EVP of Products and CTO, as all search products seem to be rolling up through his organization. (Both Balogh and Schneider are pictured here.)</p>
<p>While there are other key execs at Yahoo&#8211;see <a href="http://yhoo.client.shareholder.com/press/management.cfm">this drastically downsized Yahoo management page</a>, which used to be a <em>lot</em> longer&#8211;Balogh and Schneider have roughly split the company into two parts, product and engineering for Balogh and the bulk of the content and advertising businesses under Schneider.</p>
<p>Bartz is at the top, of course, and moving parts is not a complete surprise, said one exec, as she gets more control of the company.</p>
<p>&#8220;The last reorg was a blunt instrument, so now she is starting to surgically move people around or even out, after seeing what staff can and can&#8217;t do and what fat there still is,&#8221; said one exec close to the situation.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s no small comfort to Yahoo&#8217;s reorg-and-layoff-weary staff, especially at its Sunnyvale, Calif., HQ in the heart of Silicon Valley.</p>
<p>When Bartz <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090226/one-last-yahoo-reorg-missive-bartz-tells-employees-what-she-already-said-again/">announced her big reorganization in late February</a>, she declared a moratorium to the endless reorganizations that had plagued the company&#8217;s troops for far too many years.</p>
<p>Wrote Bartz in an email to Yahoo employees about her new management lineup:</p>
<p>&#8220;I know you guys have reorg fatigue. Hang in there&#8211;our intention is to leave this structure in place for two to four years. We&#8217;ll continue to make adjustments as needed, but we expect this core structure to stay put.&#8221;</p>
<p>Perhaps the core is still solid, but a lot is still quite undefined at Yahoo, as it seeks to right its shaky fortunes.</p>

<p>You must know by now how much BoomTown loves internal Yahoo (YHOO) memos. But this is getting ridiculous.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s been like a flash flood after a long drought at Sunnyvale HQ today, as Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz turns on the fire hose of a whole lot of communicating.</p>
<p>A lot. <em>A real lot</em>.</p>
<p>&#8220;I know you guys have reorg fatigue,&#8221; wrote Bartz, in the latest email to employees about the management reorganization finally announced this morning.</p>
<p>Also memo fatigue at <strong>All Things Digital</strong> HQ, if you can believe it.</p>
<p>Okay, I give, Carol! Well, for now, until another juicy internal memo you aren&#8217;t handing out freely lands in my inbox, for example, such as one about a search deal with Microsoft (MSFT). I&#8217;d like one of those to go, please!</p>
<p>But, in a gesture of a leak-free peace (can the drop-kick bounty be suspended for just today?), I am posting this last memo about the management reorganization from Carol &#8220;Chatterbox&#8221; Bartz.</p>
<p>(Although, I wish she would stop insulting the press, as she does below again. We are just doing our job&#8211;and <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090225/more-on-yahoo-reorg-in-process-ari-and-hilary-rule-but-who-is-joel-jones/"><em>very</em> accurately, as it turned out</a>&#8211;yet the jibes continue. Which is odd, frankly, given that Bartz has had mostly glowing coverage in the media her entire career.)</p>
<p>But Bartz did seem to leave a little mystery in the email still, as if even more rearranging were to come.</p>
<p>Writes Bartz (my bolding):</p>
<p>&#8220;As soon as decisions were made, I wanted you to know about them&#8211;<strong>even if that means we don&#8217;t have all the details nailed down yet&#8221;</strong>.</p>
<p>Wait, are the deets all nailed by Bartz&#8217;s productive hammer or aren&#8217;t they?</p>
<p>At least, thankfully, the note is capitalized properly, unlike the quaint no-caps stylings of former CEO Jerry Yang.</p>

<p>As I&#8217;ve gotten to know Yahoo! over the past several weeks, I&#8217;ve developed a point of view on how our organization should be structured to set us up for success.</p>
<p>Our goal is simple: to consistently deliver awesome consumer and advertiser experiences, everywhere in the world we do business. Delivering great customer experiences is everyone&#8217;s job at Yahoo!&#8211;and each part of our organization will have a clear role in making that happen every day.</p>
<p>The timing of this announcement is important. As soon as decisions were made, I wanted you to know about them&#8211;even if that means we don&#8217;t have all the details nailed down yet. Yes, there&#8217;s been a lot of speculation in the media over the past few days&#8230;that&#8217;s been a little frustrating, but I&#8217;m not willing to speak publicly about decisions before they&#8217;re final. Today, they are&#8211;so I&#8217;ll lay out our new organizational structure for you now.</p>
<p>I know you guys have reorg fatigue. Hang in there&#8211;our intention is to leave this structure in place for two to four years. We&#8217;ll continue to make adjustments as needed, but we expect this core structure to stay put.</p>
<p>The structure outlined below will enable us to make big improvements in our product quality and operational efficiency. Part of that is simplicity&#8211;I&#8217;m frankly amazed at how complicated some things are here! We&#8217;ll have much clearer decision making and accountability. Product and regional teams will share responsibility for revenue targets and expense management, but we&#8217;ll have one P&#038;L, for which I&#8217;m accountable.</p>
<p>We will also be in a better position to really listen to and understand our customers&#8211;both consumers and advertisers. I think we&#8217;ve gotten into the habit of focusing internally too much and we sometimes forget who we&#8217;re here to serve. You&#8217;ll notice that our management structure puts a renewed focus on the customer, with stronger feedback loops across the company…and they all come through me.</p>
<p>Also, as you know, no organizational structure is a substitute for collaboration, communication and trust. We&#8217;ll all need to evolve our behavior a bit&#8211;as teams and as individuals – to make this structure work the way it&#8217;s designed.</p>
<p>So here&#8217;s the overview, with the roles that will report directly to me. As you&#8217;ll see, some of our leaders are still to be determined. I know you&#8217;ll<br />

<p>Products: We&#8217;ve combined Tech and Product groups under one roof, led by Ari Balogh as EVP Products &#038; CTO. Ari&#8217;s charter is to deliver global products that enable extraordinary consumer and advertiser experiences. Ari&#8217;s direct reports now include one leader for each product group&#8211;we&#8217;ve taken care of the &#8220;two in a box&#8221; problem.</p>
<p>One important note: The Connected Life team has been integrated into various parts of the new organization. Our mobile strategy remains a key part of Yahoo!&#8217;s focus going forward and all of our product groups will own mobile innovations. After leading Connected Life for four years, Marco Boerries has resigned from the company to spend more time with his family in Europe. We thank Marco for his important contributions at Yahoo!.</p>
<p>Regions: There are now two: North America and International. As I&#8217;ve said before, international growth is critical for Yahoo!, which has become too reliant on its U.S. business over the years.</p>
<p>The regions deliver Yahoo!&#8217;s products, programming and services to consumers, partners and advertisers in local markets. They will partner closely with the newly formed Regional Solutions &#038; Products group in Ari&#8217;s organization to help drive a significant shift in how Yahoo! develops products for different geographies. The goal is to have global platforms on which regional product offerings are based.</p>
<p>The North American region&#8211;comprised of the U.S. and Canada&#8211;is led by Hilary Schneider. The leader of our International region, to be hired soon, will be responsible for a cohesive Yahoo! global strategy and seizing our international growth opportunities. Until we determine who&#8217;ll lead the International region, Rose Tsou (Asia), Rich Riley (Europe) and Keith Nilsson (Emerging Markets) will continue to report to me.</p>
<p>Marketing: Elisa Steele will be joining Yahoo! as our Chief Marketing Officer (CMO), effective March 23. Elisa joins us from NetApp where she was SVP, Corporate Marketing. Previous to NetApp, she held executive positions in marketing at Sun Microsystems. Elisa will oversee our global marketing strategy and provide direction for our marketing function. She&#8217;ll bring together the various Yahoo! marketing teams that have been spread across the company. Reporting into Elisa will be Brand Marketing, Audience Marketing, Corporate Communications, Insights, Policy &#038; Privacy, Community Affairs and related central teams. I&#8217;m delighted to have Elisa joining the team.</p>
<p>Customer Advocacy: As I said, we can do much better in hearing the voice of the customer across Yahoo!, and incorporating what we hear into all of our work day-to-day. We have opened a search for a leader, who will oversee Customer Care and Ad Operations globally with the goal of improving how we support Yahoo!&#8217;s users and advertisers. In the interim, these teams will continue to report to Hilary.</p>
<p>Service Engineering &#038; Operations: This new team is responsible for delivering common technology services at scale, including application management and infrastructure. No matter how cool our products are, the customer&#8217;s experience won&#8217;t be great unless our applications consistently deliver. Note that we&#8217;re bringing Service Engineering together as one group because these engineers bring expertise that is best applied horizontally. Leading this organization is David Dibble, who joined Yahoo! in December. David&#8217;s team also will be accountable for delivering more effective corporate IT systems.</p>
<p>Corporate Functions: Blake Jorgensen will be leaving Yahoo! and I am searching for a new CFO. Blake will remain through a transition with his successor, and I want to thank Blake for all of his great contributions to Yahoo! over the past two years. Mike Callahan will continue to lead our Legal team, and David Windley leads our Human Resources function. Joel Jones joins the team as my Chief of Staff.</p>
<p>So that&#8217;s the high-level view. These changes are effective immediately, but we&#8217;ve got more work to do in filling out the structure of each group. In the short term, this transition will be challenging for many of our people. My executive staff will be working with their organizations as quickly as possible to create further clarity. For example, we&#8217;ll need to recast budgets and adjust work areas so we have the right people working side-by-side.</p>
<p>I want to thank all of you who&#8217;ve shared your ideas and views with me since I arrived. Several leaders across Yahoo! came together to design this new structure&#8211;I&#8217;ve been very impressed with their dedication to the right outcomes, particularly how they&#8217;ve embraced the need to eliminate the silos that have been a drag on this organization for so long.</p>
<p>I think this organizational structure has the potential to solve many of the issues you&#8217;ve helped me better understand. Of course, new issues will emerge. But I know we&#8217;ll be aligned and nimble in tackling them together.</p>

<p>Since getting to the company in 1996&#8211;which essentially means he was present at the creation&#8211;Patel (pictured here) has, as the corporate page on its top execs notes, played &#8220;key roles across the company including architecting MyYahoo!, Yahoo! Finance, Yahoo! Messenger, Yahoo! identity and the user database, and many other products that continue to impact millions of Yahoo! users.&#8221;</p>
<p>Now as EVP of the Audience Product Division, he presides over pretty much all of Yahoo&#8217;s well-known consumer products, from its homepage to its email to its search to, more recently, the product development of its media offerings.</p>
<p>But, because of his longevity, vast purview and clear impact on the company, Patel has also become a symbol for many inside Yahoo (YHOO) right now, who mention him most often in the should-he-stay-or-should-he-go-now debates about the future of the company and who should be in charge of that.</p>
<p>Thus, Patel&#8217;s fate is seen as a key indicator of what is to come at the company, especially whether he and it can change with the very fast-changing times. While his love and loyalty to Yahoo are unquestioned, like many at Yahoo, can he be a true agent of change who could upend all he has built?</p>
<p>The big question, of course: Can old Yahoos learn new tricks?</p>
<p>That, of course, is all now up to new CEO Carol Bartz, who is <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090225/more-on-yahoo-reorg-in-process-ari-and-hilary-rule-but-who-is-joel-jones/">busy restructuring the company to her liking</a>, in decisions that are about to come down after only six weeks into her tenure.</p>
<p>Bartz is clearly casting herself as the agent of dramatic change and speed, as she <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090220/carol-bartz-friday-memos-chick-flicks-the-need-for-speed-and-wow-also-here-comes-the-rerorg/">noted that in a recent memo to staff</a>:</p>
<blockquote><p>What does this have to do with the need for speed? Many of the things I just talked about could have and should have been decided earlier but we haven’t been an organization that has embraced the need for speedy decisions, even when they are the tough ones. We can all be part of changing this and getting back to an organization that is fast on its feet.&#8221;</p></blockquote>
<p>With the reorganization in flux, even as big departures occur <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090225/connected-life-head-marco-boerries-to-leave-yahoo/">(mobile head Marco Boerries today, for example)</a>, it could start to feel like the rapture at Yahoo, as the old ways make way for, <em>well</em>, the unknown.</p>
<p>Right now, it seems Patel might stay, reporting to CTO Ari Balogh, who is about to also get control over all of Yahoo&#8217;s products. Previously, Patel reported directly to outgoing President Sue Decker.</p>
<p>But others are convinced he will go, if not right away in the current upheaval, then soon enough, with Bartz and Balogh on the hunt for a crackerjack new outside product exec to take over and, more importantly, take a fresh look Yahoo&#8217;s many offerings.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s been Patel&#8217;s job for a long time, after a long rise to the top from when he arrived from Oracle (ORCL). He&#8217;s been SVP of platform engineering, chief product officer and EVP of the Platforms and Infrastructure Division, before getting his most recent title in one of Yahoo&#8217;s umpteenth reorgs.</p>
<p>&#8220;Ash is the symbol of old Yahoo, and now he is really actually one of the only ones with longevity in top management,&#8221; said one person at the company. &#8220;What happens to him&#8211;whether he stays and transforms or simply goes&#8211;says a lot about the future of Yahoo.&#8221;</p>

<p><strong>Ari, Ari, Ari!</strong></p>
<p>As <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090223/the-yahoo-management-structure-who-is-in-and-who-is-out/">BoomTown reported earlier this week</a>, it looks like CTO Ari Balogh will be the biggest winner in the management restructuring, getting to ride herd over the entire product organization, both development and technology.</p>
<p>Most interesting is that Audience Product head and longtime Yahoo veteran Ash Patel is still staying&#8211;at this point at least&#8211;and report to Balogh (Patel had previously reported directly to outgoing President Sue Decker).</p>
<p>Many at Yahoo think Patel will eventually leave, even if he is not out in the current set-up.</p>
<p>But, if he stays, Patel will apparently focus more on product architecture, if he does remain, which is kind of the purview of Venkat Panchapakesan, EVP of the Audience Technology Group, who already reports to Balogh.</p>
<p>Superman exec Ari will surely sort it all out!</p>
<p>In this scenario, Front Doors head Tapan Bhat could get more product development responsibility, especially since media product development is being moved centrally under Patel.</p>
<p><strong>Hilary Gets More Stuff</strong></p>
<p><a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2008/09/hilary.jpg"><img src="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2008/09/hilary-225x300.jpg" alt="" title="hilary" width="100" height="150" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-3549" /></a></p>
<p>As someone perceived internally as a favorite of Decker, U.S. head Hilary Schneider seems to be scoring anyway.</p>
<p>She&#8217;ll run a new U.S. division, with media head Jeff Dossett under her, as well as advertising sales head Joanne Bradford.</p>
<p>Some Yahoos, though, think Bradford could report directly to Bartz, given her purview is the most important part of Yahoo&#8217;s business.</p>
<p>Schneider will also apparently get a much diminished Connected Life unit, which focuses on mobile and other devices, after the departure of its longtime head Marco Boerries.</p>
<p>I posted <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090225/connected-life-head-marco-boerries-to-leave-yahoo/">news of his leaving earlier today</a>, which now means that part of Yahoo will not stand on its own as a separate fiefdom.</p>
<p><strong>Who Is Joel Jones?</strong></p>
<p><a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2009/02/3e03524.jpg"><img src="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2009/02/3e03524.jpg" alt="3e03524" title="3e03524" width="80" height="80" class="alignleft size-full wp-image-10322" /></a></p>
<p>Indeed. Yahoo&#8217;s current VP of corporate strategy and former McKinsey consultant, Joel Jones (pictured here), is one of the nominees to be tapped to be Bartz&#8217;s chief of staff.</p>
<p>In the new, more centralized organization that Bartz is obviously creating, that will be much more than a bag-carrying role, to be sure.</p>
<p>&#8220;Joel is as sharp as they come,&#8221; said one former Yahoo. Sharp enough to help Bartz negotiate with Microsoft (MSFT) CEO Steve Ballmer?</p>
<p>No news on a possibly COO for Bartz, but she is getting a chief marketing officer to head up the brand and PR functions. Many are suggesting an exec like Pepsi-Cola North America interactive marketing exec John Vail, as I have previously reported, although Yahoo brand exec Allen Olivo is the internal candidate.</p>
<p>Also apparently staying for now is another Decker favorite, CFO Blake Jorgensen.</p>

<p>On Friday, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090220/hurricane-carol-bartz-could-announce-major-yahoo-management-reorg-next-week/">BoomTown first reported that new Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz is likely to be announcing a sweeping new management structure</a> soon, which can only mean the possibility that some existing top execs are likely to be broomed out, even as some new ones are ushered in.</p>
<p>&#8220;This is going to be a full-scale peanut butter recall,&#8221; joked one exec, referring to the infamous <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080627/a-garlinghouse-memorial-boomtown-decodes-the-infamous-peanut-butter-manifesto/">&#8220;Peanut Butter Manifesto,&#8221;</a> which was sent around the company several years ago by former exec Brad Garlinghouse. It laid bare the problems at Yahoo (YHOO), most especially a decided lack of decision-making and lugubrious levels of managers.</p>
<p>But the reorganization of Yahoo&#8217;s top-heavy management structures&#8211;I once dubbed it the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20070928/day-73-the-sleepy-attack-of-the-yahoo-vice-presidents/">&#8220;attack of the Yahoo vice presidents&#8221;</a>&#8211;will be a bit sticky, given all the (slow-)moving parts at Yahoo (YHOO).</p>
<p>Nonetheless, Bartz signaled a <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090220/carol-bartz-friday-memos-chick-flicks-the-need-for-speed-and-wow-also-here-comes-the-rerorg/">&#8220;big week&#8221; ahead in one internal memo</a> I obtained, which was sent out Friday.</p>
<p>So what&#8217;s to come?</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s a rough primer, based on talking to numerous sources inside and outside of Yahoo:</p>
<p><strong>The Basics:</strong></p>
<p>In order to start to revive Yahoo, Bartz is likely to impose a more top-down management style on the hopelessly confusing <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090209/will-tough-talking-bartz-reorg-yahoo-soon-and-finally-blue-pill-the-matrix/">&#8220;matrix&#8221; organization now in place</a> at the company.</p>
<p>She has spent the last six weeks touring Yahoo, getting to see a lot of presentations on its many, many products and <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090210/bartz-holds-first-exec-offsite-as-the-yahoos-turn-and-twist-in-the-wind/">conducting a whirlwind of meetings with execs</a>.</p>
<p>Broadly, most expect Bartz to severely roll back a variety of previous reorganizations done by former CEO Jerry Yang and outgoing President Sue Decker, in order to impose more centralized control over the place and focus it more narrowly.</p>
<p>Presumably, lattes&#8211;paid for by Yang and co-founder David Filo&#8211;will remain free.</p>
<p><strong>Out With the Old:</strong></p>
<p>There&#8217;s no question that Yahoo is going to see the departure of several top execs, along with the elevation of others.</p>
<p><a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/wp-content/blogs.dir/4/files//2009/02/aristotle_balogh-5313-final.jpg"><img src="http://kara.allthingsd.com/wp-content/blogs.dir/4/files//2009/02/aristotle_balogh-5313-final.jpg" alt="Aristotle Balogh" title="Aristotle Balogh" width="200" height="250" class="alignleft size-full wp-image-10211" /></a></p>
<p>Among those who are more likely to be definitely in, though, is CTO Ari Balogh (pictured here), a relatively recent hire who has been a popular exec within Yahoo.</p>
<p>The <a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB123532397353742621.html">Wall Street Journal first noted the possible rise of Balogh</a> in a follow-up piece to this column&#8217;s story on the overall reorg over the weekend, noting that he would become head of product.</p>
<p>Presumably, Balogh will be one of the point men on what to do about search, in the should-I-stay-or-should-I-sell-now debate that never seems to end at Yahoo.</p>
<p>One interesting idea floating around Yahoo is that he becomes head of all its products, as well as continuing to run its tech arm.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s a good idea, since Yahoo has desperately needed an empowered leader under Bartz, who focuses like a laser beam on products.</p>
<p>&#8220;It all starts with that,&#8221; said one former exec. &#8220;One single person has to be the champion of what Yahoo makes.&#8221;</p>
<p>But what does that mean for Ash Patel, EVP of Yahoo&#8217;s Audience Product Division? Well, the longtime Yahoo veteran could now report to Balogh (he had previously reported to Decker directly) or, presumably, leave.</p>
<p>Patel&#8217;s fate, of course, impacts that of many others, such as Front Doors head Tapan Bhat, who is in charge of a major homepage redesign that Bartz just delayed the launch of to make it better.</p>
<p>Venkat Panchapakesan, EVP of the Audience Technology Group, seems safer, given that he reports to Balogh already and is responsible for the company&#8217;s overall product technology and platform strategy, such as its open efforts.</p>
<p>Also safer than not is General Counsel Michael Callahan, as well as U.S. EVP Hilary Schneider.</p>
<p>But Schneider&#8217;s purview might change a bit if U.S. advertising sales head Joanne Bradford&#8211;who now reports to her&#8211;is elevated to a higher position or if sales is taken out from under Schneider.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s not a stretch to imagine Bartz wanting more control of the part of Yahoo that brings in the bucks.</p>
<p>The fate of Connected Life Division EVP Marco Boerries is dicier&#8211;think Yahoo mobile and other devices&#8211;as it is for CFO Blake Jorgensen and David Windley, who heads human resources.</p>
<p>Both Jorgensen and Windley were favored by Decker, which does not necessarily make them goners. But both are in jobs on which Bartz will have to rely much more, so she might want her own choices in place.</p>

<p>Boerries (pictured here), a talented but more freewheeling exec under Yang, is another question all together. Already wealthy from selling several companies, the entrepreneurial exec is most often mentioned by sources as someone unlikely to stick around, especially if Bartz tries to rein him in more. (In addition, Boerries has family issues requiring that he spend a lot of time in his native Germany.)</p>
<p>As to the many Yahoo SVPs and VPs? Let&#8217;s just say it is likely there will be many fewer of them, as Bartz cuts, consolidates, simplifies and centralizes divisions more.</p>
<p><strong>In With the New:</strong></p>
<p>One hire that is definitely coming is a new chief of marketing to take over Yahoo&#8217;s brand, as well as its PR function. Yahoo has not had that kind of powerful exec in a long time, and it is more likely Bartz will go for an outside star here.</p>

<p>One outside name skittering around Yahoo for the role is John Vail (pictured here), director of interactive marketing for Pepsi-Cola North America, who knows Yahoo well.</p>
<p>(An obvious internal candidate for the job would be Yahoo&#8217;s Global Brand Marketing SVP, Allen Olivo, who could hit the road if not selected.)</p>
<p>Also a possibility is adding a COO with more Web experience to come in to help Bartz. There are plenty of candidates for that job all over the Internet sector.</p>
<p>But Bartz seems to be the kind of exec who favors flying solo and having key execs report to her to keep a finger on the pulse of a company. She is most definitely not going to have an entourage around her.</p>
<p>In fact, said one person familiar with the situation: &#8220;It&#8217;s long past time for new plumbing, and [Bartz] seems ready to flush a lot out that has long needed to go.&#8221;</p>

<p>According to numerous sources inside and outside the company BoomTown has spoken to this week, board Chairman Roy Bostock (pictured here) has been asserting a new CEO will be named by the new year.</p>
<p>Only 28 more shopping days left until management clarity!</p>
<p>Well, maybe not so much.</p>
<p>Why?</p>
<p>Because there&#8217;s actually no &#8220;official&#8221; search committee that has been appointed by Yahoo&#8217;s board, sources said.</p>
<p>Instead, an informal group&#8211;with Bostock and board member Gary Wilson at the lead, with help from all the rest of the board&#8211;is conducting the effort jointly, along with exec search firm Heidrick &#038; Struggles.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s almost like a Berkeley collective!</p>
<p>The board, though, has apparently made a list of six&#8211;I have no idea why that is the number chosen&#8211;clear criteria for the new leader of Yahoo (YHOO).</p>
<p>The first is that the candidate have &#8220;extensive&#8221; experience as the CEO of a public company. Another calls for media and advertising expertise. And mergers and acquisitions experience. Also strategic skills.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s a tall order, of course, to deliver on in such a short time.</p>
<p>In addition, the idea of bringing in at the same time a No. 1 and No. 2 exec has been considered, with one stronger in media and the other in product and technology.</p>
<p>It is hard to find an exec with skills in both, even in the best of situations.</p>
<p>Think pairing someone like News Corp. (NWS) COO Peter Chernin with Google (GOOG) exec Tim Armstrong or DoubleClick exec David Rosenblatt with, say, Yahoo CTO Ari Balogh and you get the concept.</p>
<p><a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2008/11/maggie-wilderotter.jpg"><img src="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2008/11/maggie-wilderotter-300x300.jpg" alt="" title="maggie-wilderotter" width="200" height="200" class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-6630" /></a></p>
<p>But many who have spoken to board members at Yahoo said they get the distinct impression that they are leaning toward one of their own&#8211;former Nextel head John Chapple, former media exec Frank Biondi, Jr. or former Microsoft (MSFT) exec Maggie Wilderotter (pictured here).</p>
<p>That is due to wanting someone who has operational skills, but also can get things moving at Yahoo, while also being able to continue to work with Yang.</p>
<p>He will remain on the board and regain his title of Chief Yahoo. Sources said Bostock and other board members believe that Yang remains an important and beloved figure at Yahoo among the rank and file and needs to remain involved going forward.</p>
<p>Another key reason for wanting to pick an insider is that Bostock has also intimated that Yahoo was ready to do a deal at any time in the next week or so to merge with AOL&#8211;with or without a new CEO in place.</p>
<p>Consummating that might irk an outside candidate, who would have to manage the complex merger without input into its making, rather than a board member, who has been involved.</p>
<p>Talks between Yahoo and AOL have been never-ending and due diligence extensive, as this column has previously reported, although slower of late, because of the uncertainty around Yahoo leadership.</p>
<p>And the price&#8211;or, more specifically, the percentage&#8211;Yahoo has been willing to fork over to AOL owner Time Warner (TWX) has been the key sticking point, especially as Yahoo&#8217;s stock has waned in price.</p>
<p>Yahoo has long wanted to give Time Warner about 20 percent of the merged company, while Time Warner has wanted one-third. At current prices, that&#8217;s about $3 billion in value versus $5 billion.</p>
<p><a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2008/10/yang.jpg"><img src="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2008/10/yang-205x300.jpg" alt="" title="yang" width="175" height="250" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-5397" /></a></p>
<p>But, if such a deal could finally be struck, it might be a <a href=" http://kara.allthingsd.com/20081117/jerry-yangs-entire-memo-to-his-employees-on-stepping-down-as-ceo/">dramatic and apt swan song move for Yang</a> (pictured here), which could inject a bit of excitement into the mostly lackluster situation for both Yahoo and AOL.</p>
<p>Yang and others at Yahoo have also long felt that the company would have more leverage with Microsoft if it also controlled AOL&#8211;when and if it formally restarts its talks with the software giant about some sort of search deal.</p>
<p>Interestingly, many close to the situation said that there is still resistance among the &#8220;old guard&#8221; of the Yahoo board to doing a search deal at all.</p>
<p>New board member and activist shareholder Carl Icahn has loudly called for such a partnership with Microsoft.</p>
<p>But there is still extensive internal debate about whether it is wise to decouple search from Yahoo, many sources said, even if it brings in massive guaranteed revenues and allows Yahoo to cut costs in its engineering ranks.</p>
<p>Said one person close to the situation: &#8220;A lot of what has been going on is the board trying to figure out what kind of company does Yahoo aspire to be. That determines the type of person they bring in.&#8221;</p>

<p>Yahoo&#8211;because it has decided its living-inside-a-cave press strategy has been, <em>shall we say</em>, a bust&#8211;has invited a passel of media tomorrow to its Sunnyvale, Calif., HQ and will trot out a range of top execs to talk specifically about the various facets of its &#8220;open&#8221; strategy.</p>
<p>In an attempt to redefine and refocus itself, Yahoo has correctly wed itself to the trend toward more-open platforms, rather than locking consumers into its once tightly closed portal gates.</p>
<p>Yahoo (YHOO) has been accelerating its open activities of late, mostly related to its search and ad infrastructure. Now it is trying to show that it can be open all over the company.</p>
<p>Neither CEO Jerry Yang nor President Sue Decker will be at tomorrow&#8217;s event (he is at a Cisco board meeting, while she is in London&#8211;and BoomTown now sounds like the official Yahoo exec stalker). But the company will feature many key players.</p>
<p>The gathering will be kicked off by Yahoo&#8217;s CTO, Ari Balogh, for example, who has been a <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080418/open-season-at-yahoo/">prime mover in the company&#8217;s open-platform strategy</a>.</p>
<p>Also on deck: Yahoo Audience Product Division EVP Ash Patel, who will be talking about the opening up of platforms and products like email; Hilary Scheider, Yahoo U.S. EVP, who will discuss opening up Yahoo&#8217;s ad business; Yahoo Media Group head Scott Moore, who will cover how Yahoo&#8217;s content properties integrate third-party partners and also become more distributed; and Marc Davis, Yahoo&#8217;s &#8220;social media guru&#8221; in its Connected Life division, who will do the open dance related to mobile.</p>
<p>As I have previously written, this kind of conceptual shift toward open platforms is something many have felt Yahoo has needed to do in a bolder manner, as consumer interest in massive centralized portals like Yahoo has waned.</p>
<p>Following in the path of start-ups like Facebook, the vision is of a more widgetized and social Yahoo and a Yahoo available everywhere.</p>
<p>Yang has also made open a core Yahoo strategy, saying at one point:</p>
<p>&#8220;These key strategies will be enhanced by our adoption of new, more open technology platforms that will encourage the development of new applications and the involvement of third-party developers&#8211;and help enrich the user experience.&#8221;</p>
<p>Now if Yahoo could just open up a can of excitement to jack up its moribund stock price-now in the $17 range again&#8211;things would <em>really</em> be looking up.</p>

<p><em>YAHOO! ANNOUNCES REALIGNMENT TO SUPPORT CORE STRATEGIES</p>
<p>Centralizes Audience Product Development; Forms New U.S. Region;</p>
<p>Realigns Technology Organization</p>
<p>SUNNYVALE, Calif., June 26, 2008&#8211;Yahoo! Inc. (Nasdaq:YHOO), a leading global Internet company, today announced changes to its organization aimed at improving its products, technologies and execution. The moves support its strategy to be the starting point for the most users, the must-buy for the most advertisers and the platform of choice for developers.</p>
<p>Key elements Yahoo! announced are the centralization of consumer product development to enhance the company&#8217;s ability to release products worldwide; the creation of a U.S. region focused on bringing products to market for users, advertisers and publishers; formation of an insights strategy team; and enhancements to the technology infrastructure to optimize the use of data and improve coordination between product and engineering teams.</p>
<p>&#8220;These moves accelerate the ability of our deep and talented team to build great products, grow our audiences and improve monetization globally,&#8221; said Jerry Yang, CEO. &#8220;They are designed to put us in an even better position to leverage our leading global audience and capture the opportunity we see in the convergence of search and display advertising.&#8221;</em></p>

<p><em>Business and Product Changes</p>
<p>The company is creating three new teams that will report to President Sue Decker. An Audience Products Division will assume responsibility for companywide product strategy and product management. It will be led by Ash Patel who previously managed the company&#8217;s Platforms &#038; Infrastructure group. A U.S. region with accountability for all go-to-market activity in the U.S. will be led by Hilary Schneider, who previously headed the company&#8217;s Global Partner Solutions group. Finally, an Insights Strategy team will assume responsibility for centralizing and executing a common strategy for the use of data and analysis across Yahoo!. The company plans to name this group&#8217;s leader within the next few weeks.</p>
<p>&#8220;The changes we&#8217;re making today will help deliver superior global products for users and enable faster and better decision-making,&#8221; said President Sue Decker. &#8220;This is a logical next step in light of our success last year in moving to a more centralized approach to developing world-class marketing products. We have planned these changes deliberately over the past several months to clarify responsibilities and to capitalize on the scale advantages while allowing for fine tuning to meet local market needs.&#8221;</p>
<p>Technology and Infrastructure Changes</p>
<p>Yahoo! is making changes to its technology organization, led by Chief Technology Officer Ari Balogh, to better position the company to execute on its strategic priorities. Principal changes are developing a world-class cloud computing and storage infrastructure; rewiring Yahoo! onto common platforms; and creating a stronger partnership between product and engineering teams.</p>
<p>&#8220;Since my arrival at Yahoo! earlier this year, we&#8217;ve carefully evaluated the best possible configuration of our technology group to support our business strategies,&#8221; said Balogh. &#8220;I&#8217;m excited by the depth of our team which—combined with the talent we continue to recruit—will execute even better under this new structure.&#8221;</p>
<p>In order to expand its cloud computing capabilities, the Company will form a Cloud Computing &#038; Data Infrastructure Group, charged with developing a computing infrastructure that balances scalability with cost effectiveness. It will move all consumer-facing platform teams to the Audience Technology Group, led by Venkat Panchapakesan. In addition, it is putting new leadership in place behind Yahoo!&#8217;s search group, naming Prabhakar Raghavan to direct search strategy and Tuoc Luong as the interim leader of the search product team. <p>Sources said a more substantial public announcement has been pushed by Yahoo&#8217;s board&#8211;apparently, an internal email to employees was considered too&#8211;to show Yahoo&#8217;s new team and that the company still has a strong bench, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080619/qi-lu-departure-a-blow-mahijani-out-too-garlinghouse-not-quite-yet/">despite a lot of exec departures of late</a>.</p>
<p>As we already wrote, the structure will pivot on several key execs, reporting to President Sue Decker.</p>
<p>EVP of Yahoo&#8217;s Platforms and Infrastructure division Ash Patel as head of a new Audience Products group (its name was changed from Global Products); Global Partner Solutions EVP Hilary Schneider as the head of a new U.S unit; various folks running around the rest of the globe.</p>
<p>There will also be another strategy team group with a new head, who has not yet been chosen.</p>
<p><a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2008/06/scott-dietzen.jpg"><img src="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2008/06/scott-dietzen-231x300.jpg" alt="" title="scott-dietzen" width="115" height="150" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-2230" /></a></p>
<p>And Yahoo will name Scott Dietzen (pictured, right) to take over part of the job of SVP Brad Garlinghouse, who running was running all communications properties and products. Dietzen will get the communications portfolio, which includes email and messaging, all under Patel.</p>
<p>(Community properties like Flickr will actually move under Front Door Head Tapan Bhat, who also reports to Patel.)</p>
<p>Dietzen was the president and CTO of Zimbra (and before that CTO of BEA Systems), the highly innovative open-source email startup Yahoo <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20070917/yahoo-zimbra/">bought last fall for $350 million</a>.</p>

<p>Garlinghouse (pictured, left), as we reported last night, will not be officially leaving until the end of the summer, though. He is currently traveling in Asia, sources said, and has not yet decided on a new gig.</p>
<p>He is, of course, the man who wrote<a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080619/is-yahoos-peanut-butter-man-toast/"> the infamous &#8220;Peanut Butter Manifesto,&#8221; </a>which first revealed deep tension within Yahoo.</p>
<p>Yahoo is likely to also announce changes in the engineering organization under CTO Ari Balogh, who is also <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080418/open-season-at-yahoo/">orchestrating some massive and much-needed changes</a> in the arena at Yahoo.</p>

<p>Company in crisis? Employees morale plummeting? Shareholders in revolt? Stock slumping? Barbarians at the gate?</p>
<p>The <em>perfect</em> time to get out the Rubik&#8217;s Cube for yet another Yahoo reorganization!</p>
<p>BoomTown now has the outline of the likely sweeping management changes at Yahoo (YHOO), which we reported on earlier this week <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080617/boomtowns-short-list-of-yahoo-ceos-sorry-jerry-but-fortune-favors-the-prepared/">here</a> and <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080619/whos-next-to-go-at-yahoo-as-reorg-looms/">also here</a>, to be announced next week by the troubled Internet company.</p>
<p>The reorg, which will drastically change the structure of management, explains a lot about the spate of recent departures by top execs at the company.</p>
<p>Let&#8217;s just dive in, <em>shall we</em>?</p>

<p>First off, a spanking new Global Products group, which will be headed by Ash Patel (pictured here), who is currently EVP of Yahoo&#8217;s Platforms and Infrastructure division.</p>
<p>Much of the Network division, which until recently was under the leadership of the <a href="http:///kara.allthingsd.com/20080612/weiner-will-leave-yahoo-but-might-not-be-replaced/">now departed Jeff Weiner</a>, will move under Patel, including search, mail, instant messenger, front page, platforms and social networking.</p>
<p>All these products are considered &#8220;global&#8221; properties and products and will be managed out of Yahoo HQ in Sunnyvale, Calif.</p>
<p>That means the fiefdoms of communications and communities SVP Brad Garlinghouse, Search SVP Vish Makhijani and Front Door head Tapan Bhat will move into Global Products.</p>
<p>Which would explain why <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080619/qi-lu-departure-a-blow-mahijani-out-too-garlinghouse-not-quite-yet/">Makhijani is now headed out the door and Garlinghouse is on the fence about his own departure</a>.</p>
<p>Bhat is also reportedly unsure about the new structure and is considering his options.</p>
<p>Unlike Qi Lu, Yahoo&#8217;s EVP of Search and Advertising Technology, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080619/whos-next-to-go-at-yahoo-as-reorg-looms/">who is also leaving and is considered a tech rock star at Yahoo</a>, the prospect of working for Patel is not a welcome one for some Yahoo execs in the old Network division.</p>
<p>Patel has been at Yahoo since 1996, which makes him one of the oldest of old guards at the company.</p>
<p>&#8220;No one wants to report up through him,&#8221; said one Yahoo exec. &#8220;He&#8217;s a Yahoo lifer and not the kind of dynamic leader we need.&#8221;</p>

<p>More welcome&#8211;although not by all&#8211;is likely to be the move to give Global Partner Solutions EVP Hilary Schneider (pictured here) purview over the entire U.S. region.</p>
<p>She will be Patel&#8217;s peer in the new organization and both will report directly to Yahoo President Sue Decker.</p>
<p>Schneider&#8217;s arena will include all of ad sales and also the Yahoo Media Group under Scott Moore, who was Weiner&#8217;s other direct report.</p>
<p>That shift will bring together Yahoo&#8217;s vast content properties, like Yahoo Finance, with ad sales and align them more closely.</p>
<p>In addition, some other consumer-facing products will move to Moore under Schneider.</p>
<p>In the last reorganization, Moore got autos and real estate, as well as all entertainment and sports.</p>
<p>Several sources said Moore, a former Microsoft (MSFT) exec, is satisfied about the new arrangement and the prospect of reporting to Schneider.</p>
<p>But other sources said he also has been scouting out a new start-up venture that could include some significant investors.</p>
<p>In addition, some execs are worried about the likable Schneider&#8217;s ability to handle such a large job.</p>
<p>&#8220;There is lot on her plate and, while she is good at the business side, she is not a products person,&#8221; said one in a common refrain about her.</p>
<p>The rest of the world will be split up between three other regions: Europe, headed by Toby Coppel; Asia, run by Rose Tsou; and emerging markets, headed by Keith Nilsson.</p>
<p>Yahoo&#8217;s relatively new CTO Ari Balogh will take over a lot of Lu&#8217;s team with various engineering execs under him.</p>

<p>Top managers, most of whom had little input in the reorg, which was run by Decker (pictured here) and top HR execs, are reeling from the changes being presented with what most say is little consultation.</p>
<p>&#8220;I am not sure right now, with all this drama and all this tension from Microsoft&#8217;s failed takeover and the rest of it, why we have to do this,&#8221; said another exec. &#8220;This feels crazy.&#8221;</p>
<p>Maybe not so much. Yahoo shareholders are becoming restless after Microsoft dropped its $33 a share bid for Yahoo and want some action soon.</p>
<p>And billionaire activist investor Carl Icahn is still pursuing his proxy fight to remove Yahoo&#8217;s board and management.</p>
<p>Insiders within Yahoo suspect that top execs want to make changes before the Aug. 1 annual meeting, so they can show momentum.</p>
<p>The question is whether that will include another more significant change&#8211;the stepping up to Chairman for Yahoo CEO Jerry Yang and the handing over the CEO reins to Decker.</p>
<p>Many execs said that Yang has been strangely absent from the communications around the reorg, which has been driven largely by Decker.</p>
<p>&#8220;Where&#8217;s Jerry here? He is like a ghost,&#8221; said another exec. &#8220;It is nerve-wracking.&#8221;</p>
