<p>A group of Melbourne, Australia-based artists is incorporating the scent of a MacBook Pro laptop into an upcoming exhibit titled &#8220;Greatest Hits,&#8221; explained <a href="http://westspace.org.au/calendar/event/de-facto-standard/">here</a> with only a Wikipedia entry about the format wars between Blu-ray disc and HD DVD standards. </p>
<p>According to Macworld, &#8220;The scent created with Air Aroma &#8230; encompasses the smell of the plastic wrap covering the box, the printed ink on the cardboard, the smell of paper and plastic components within the box and, of course, the aluminum laptop which has come straight from the factory in China.&#8221;</p>

<p>Unfortunately, for the time being, average consumers won&#8217;t be able to douse themselves in the scent of Apple magic. As Air Aroma, which worked with the artist trio to create the perfume, <a href="http://www.air-aroma.com/blog/the-scent-of-a-apple-product-sourcing-the-macbook-pro-fragrance">writes on its Web site</a>, &#8220;The Apple unboxing scent was created for use at this particular exhibition only and is not available for purchase on our online retail store for personal use.&#8221;</p>

<p><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-163482" title="fab + fashionstake" src="http://allthingsd.com/files/2012/01/fab-+-fashionstake-371x285.png" alt="" width="371" height="285" />In the past seven months, Fab has grown rapidly, registering 1.65 million users, who have purchased 750,000 products.</p>
<p>It now plans to grow even faster, with the help of this acquisition.</p>
<p>Both companies have a similar mission: To bring independent artists and craftsmen, who make aesthetically appealing and sometimes out-of-the ordinary items, to a large marketplace.</p>
<p>Fab.com does this mostly for home decor, and New York-based FashionStake does it mostly for fashion and apparel. The sites have the flavor of a Gilt Groupe, which sells high-end fashion at a discount, except they offer more undiscovered brands, at more reasonable prices.</p>
<p>In a blog post, Fab CEO Jason Goldberg said FashionStake co-founders Vivian Weng and Daniel Gulati will join the Fab company.</p>
<p>Goldberg did not disclose terms of the deal, but it&#8217;s possible that he tapped into a large cash reserve, which includes a $40 million round of capital raised last month from Andreessen Horowitz and others.</p>
<p>FashionStake, which launched in September 2010, has received investments from a number of players, including Battery Ventures, Forerunner Ventures and Gilt Groupe co-founder Alexis Maybank.</p>
<p>Last year, <a href="http://shop.moxsie.com/">FashionStake acquired Moxsie</a>, another retailer of independent fashion.</p>

<p>The new <a href="http://www.skygrid.com/groups">SkyGrid Groups</a> pages look like another social network, but they&#8217;re not; instead, they link out to fans&#8217; existing profiles and updates on services like Twitter, Facebook and YouTube.</p>
<p>SkyGrid founder and CEO Kevin Pomplun said an artist like <a href="http://www.skygrid.com/u/gagadaily">Lady Gaga</a> (who is a launch partner) could create groups for the local areas where she will be touring (so they can meet and organize rides) or for people who are talking about a particular song of hers (based on a keyword search). Another pilot user is the crowdsourcing project <a href="http://www.skygrid.com/u/ushahidi">Ushahidi</a>, which is using its page to highlight top fans in its community.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Thanks to the popularity of Facebook, it&#8217;s easy to assume that all social networks are designed primarily to connect friends with one another. But many of these networks—think Twitter, Yelp and  LinkedIn—aren&#8217;t focused on that. Instead, they provide information from strangers, business contacts and group postings on a variety of topics. Myspace is now also shifting in this direction after Facebook decisively overtook it as the most popular social network.</p>
<p>Last month, the company rolled out a revamped version of Myspace, which is owned by News Corp., publisher of the Wall Street Journal. I&#8217;ve been testing it to see what has changed and if it&#8217;s worth using. Its interface is cleaner than the old version of Myspace and I found it easy to navigate. It&#8217;s also inviting for non-members or people who&#8217;ve long-since given up on Myspace. But I can&#8217;t definitely say I like it enough to add it to my large list of social networks.</p>

<p>Step one of this site&#8217;s rehab was a new focus. Myspace (<a href="http://myspace.com">myspace.com</a>) was redesigned to serve as a source of information about entertainment. People who use it can follow five categories—TV, music, movies, celebrities and comedy—that include more than 100,000 topics. News about these topics comes from  sites all over the Web and is arranged on users&#8217; home pages to show loads of information at a glance. A Discovery tab at the top of the page shows content related to trends on Myspace makes suggestions based on a user&#8217;s preferences and taste. A spokesman said the Myspace topics can be expanded, but for now, if you&#8217;re fonder of, say, books, theater or hard news, Myspace won&#8217;t be a good fit. </p>
<p>Step two for Myspace included making nice with its old competitor. It now works with Facebook Connect to pull in people&#8217;s Facebook &#8220;likes&#8221; and interests, which automatically generate customized Myspace pages for new users. </p>
<p>The final step of the Myspace redesign was its emphasis on music. The site still contains one of the largest Web music catalogs that plays full versions of songs for anyone who visits Myspace. New versions of band profile pages look more organized. And all artists with band profiles will have ReverbNation&#8217;s FanReach email product integrated into their profile to help them create targeted email campaigns for fans.</p>
<p>Was Myspace&#8217;s rehabilitation worth the effort? I&#8217;ve been using it for a week and it has taught me a lot more than I knew about things I care about. I had no idea that one of my favorite TV shows, TNT&#8217;s &#8220;The Closer,&#8221; recently said that 2011 would be its last season. Nor did I know that Anthony Bourdain blogs about his role as a judge on &#8220;Top Chef Masters.&#8221; These items and others appeared on my Home page after I performed the process that the Myspace site refers to as a Facebook Mashup.</p>
<p>The Facebook Mashup does a few things automatically for you, in addition to generating a Myspace page filled with topic-related news. A playlist is created in the Music section of your page that contains artists whom you &#8220;like&#8221; on Facebook (or whom you indicated while setting up an account). And the Videos section of the Myspace page will reflect your tastes in a list of Followed Channels related to your Facebook preferences.</p>
<p>The Home page can be seen in one of three views—List, Grid or Play—and icons at the top of the screen let users toggle among  these views. My favorite was Grid View in the Full Grid View format, visible by clicking a small box at the top of the page. </p>
<p>Some of the content displayed on my Home page was mixed up. For example, a tile representing the story about Mr. Bourdain&#8217;s blog (originally posted on <a href="http://Celebrifi.com">Celebrifi.com</a>) displayed with it a photo of actor Tom Cruise, who wasn&#8217;t mentioned in that post. Another Tom, Tom Colicchio, chef and a &#8220;Top Chef Masters&#8221; judge, was mentioned in the post, but that doesn&#8217;t explain the mix-up. </p>
<p>Anything that falls into the 100,000 plus topics of Myspace&#8217;s realm can be found via a search box in the top right corner of the page, but this box is confusingly labeled, &#8220;Search People.&#8221; Though Myspace still allows users to search for and friend one another, the label on this search box is puzzling, given the greater reach of the site. </p>
<p>You can watch video content from <a href="http://Hulu.com">Hulu.com</a> (of which News Corp. is part owner) without jumping to a new page. And videos also come from other sources like TMZ and the NFL.</p>
<p>Users can earn recognition badges—icons that show up on their page—for their involvement on Myspace, and can become curators of topics, awarded on the basis of users&#8217; involvement and how much other people respond to their activity. </p>
<p>This week, a Myspace mobile app was launched in Apple&#8217;s App Store, and an Android app is due out next year.</p>
<p>Myspace successfully reinvented itself in a way that could very well get people using it again, but Facebook&#8217;s more personalized social network may be more valuable than a rich library of entertainment content.</p>

Though as I noted yesterday, the timing was <a href="http://newenterprise.allthingsd.com/20101214/gawker-password-mess-spreads-to-world-or-warcraft-apparently-yaho/">certainly suspicious</a>.</p>
<p>However, we&#8217;re starting to get more information about how the McDonald&#8217;s incident appears connected to hacking incidents at other sites. <a href="http://www.chicagobusiness.com/article/20101213/NEWS07/101219975/mcdonalds-says-hacker-broke-into-customer-database-fbi-investigating">Chicago Business</a> is reporting that the company responsible for McDonald&#8217;s email marketing is <a href="http://www.silverpop.com/marketing-company/company-overview.html">Silverpop Systems</a>, and that it had been operating under a subcontract from Chicago-based Arc Worldwide.</p>
<p>So who else is a customer of Silverpop? Yesterday I received an email from someone who&#8217;s a customer of <a href="http://about.deviantart.com/">deviantArt</a>, a social network where artists share their creations. DeviantArt has a base of 13 million users. Got an account there? You&#8217;d better change any passwords that overlap with other sites. The site advised customers that their accounts were compromised, and blamed Silverpop.</p>
<p>It could extend much further yet. Silverpop has more than 100 clients, and not all of them are publicly disclosed, though here are a few, found on its <a href="http://www.silverpop.com/clients/client-quotes.html">client quotes</a> page and its <a href="http://www.silverpop.com/marketing-resources/case-studies/index.html">case studies</a> page: Stamps.com, Pitney Bowes/Mapinfo, Encyclopedia Britannica, Santander Consumer Finance and watchmaker Fossil. There&#8217;s no word how any of those other companies are affected, if at all.</p>
<p>Silverpop CEO Bill Nussey said in a blog message to customers that the FBI is <a href="http://www.silverpop.com/blogs/email-marketing/uncategorized/a-special-message-from-silverpop.html">investigating the incident</a>, and that only a small percentage of Silverpop customers have been affected. He also said that Silverpop was &#8220;among several technology providers targeted as part of a broader cyber attack.&#8221; Stacy Kirk, a Silverpop spokeswoman, wouldn&#8217;t say anything beyond what&#8217;s in Nussey&#8217;s message.</p>
<p>I&#8217;m beginning to wonder if there&#8217;s some indirect connection between what happened to Silverpop and what happened to Gawker. I&#8217;m speculating here, but it&#8217;s no stretch of the imagination that numbering among deviantArt&#8217;s 13 million users are some of the 1.5 million people whose accounts were compromised in the Gawkergate affair. And the FBI is <a href="http://www.nypost.com/p/news/business/fbi_investigating_gawker_hacking_8d96mcgcFbgMVhw8Ge3rpJ">investigating both</a>. Thomas Plunkett, Gawker&#8217;s technology chief, told me by email that there&#8217;s no evidence of a connection. Then again, as Business Insider tells it, he hasn&#8217;t yet had his <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/fbi-meeting-with-gawker-tomorrow-2010-12">meeting with the FBI</a>.</p>
<p>Maybe I&#8217;m looking for connections that aren&#8217;t really there, but it&#8217;s really not hard to see how the breach at Gawker could turn out be the start of a domino effect that&#8217;s much larger than anyone has yet realized. There certainly is a lot of  grumbling about <a href="http://search.twitter.com/search?q=%22changing+passwords%22">changing passwords</a> today.</p>

But it <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20100925/apple-makes-some-progress-with-ping-still-a-long-way-to-go/">might</a>! And in any case, it&#8217;s Apple, so if you&#8217;re a music act you ignore it at your own risk.</p>
<p>Which means those acts need to create a &#8220;profile&#8221; for Steve Jobs&#8217;s social network. An Apple (AAPL) document <a href="http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/news/1742187/steve-jobs-lays-law-artists-ping?WT.rss_f=Home&amp;WT.rss_a=Steve+Jobs+lays+down+the+law+to+artists+on+Ping">making the rounds</a> (Apple has confirmed its authenticity to me) explains how. You can read the whole thing at the bottom of this post.</p>
<p>Most of it concerns technical specs about things you don&#8217;t care about, like video formats. Here&#8217;s one part you might be interested in&#8211;some of Apple&#8217;s edicts regarding the content of artists&#8217; profiles:</p>
<ul>
<li>Videos, photos, and text posts should not contain pornography, hate speech, racism, nudity, or any references to or depictions of drug use.</li>
<li>Posts should not include advertisements or links to sites outside of iTunes.</li>
<li>Posts should not contain links to other content providers.</li>
</ul>
<p>The first item is sort of obvious, but still worth noting. Because theoretically, if the Beatles ever do make it to iTunes, they&#8217;re going to have a hard time promoting some of their songs. Like <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A7F2X3rSSCU">this one</a>.</p>
<p>But that rule seems like the kind of thing that Apple can change or ignore at will&#8211;just like its &#8220;no porn except sometimes&#8221; ban in the iTunes app store. And anyway, artists have always found ways to <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Let%27s_Spend_the_Night_Together">put up with</a>, or <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=61m_Dm44RHA">ignore</a>, these kinds of restraints.</p>
<p>The rules about not posting to links outside of iTunes are more worrisome. Because it&#8217;s telling music acts to ignore the digital assets they&#8217;ve painstakingly built up on MySpace, Twitter, Facebook and anywhere else on the Web.</p>
<p>Makes sense for Apple, but not for anyone else.</p>

<p>The distinction is hardly academic. Under most recording contracts, artists are entitled to 50% of revenue from licensed uses of their music. That usually means soundtracks for movies, TV shows and ads. Sales, on the other hand generate royalties for the artist at a much lower rate&#8211;generally in the low teens, and rarely more than 20%.</p>

<p>This one isn&#8217;t a total shock, as EMI and Grooveshark had supposedly been close to a deal prior to the lawsuit. And it wouldn&#8217;t be the first time that a label sued a Web company: See Warner Music Group (WMG) and Imeem, as well as Universal Music Group and News Corp.&#8217;s (NWS) MySpace, among others.</p>
<p>No details on the deal from EMI or Florida-based Grooveshark, which offers free streaming music, a la MySpace Music, Imeem, Spotify and others. Unlike those services, though, Grooveshark doesn&#8217;t appear to have licensing deals with three of the big four labels and plays their music anyway. But with the exception of the EMI suit, it has remained unmolested. Interesting.</p>

Gainesville, FL&#8211;Today, digital music service Grooveshark.com announced it has entered into agreements with major label EMI Music and EMI Music Publishing that will give Grooveshark users access to content from EMI’s roster of current and legendary catalog artists and EMI Music Publishing’s songwriters.</p>
<p>Grooveshark offers music fans the ability to stream songs for no fee from a vast catalog of music. Fans can enjoy Grooveshark’s music without having to download client software or register. The basic service is free to fans and supported by visual advertising. Fans who opt for a $3 per month premium service can enjoy unlimited ad-free streaming music. The site was recently named the best way to listen to music on the web by Rolling Stone, and just surpassed one million registered users.</p>
<p>&#8220;EMI Music and EMI Music Publishing have collaborated with us to create a mutually sustainable deal which represents the future of digital music,&#8221; says Grooveshark CEO Sam Tarantino. &#8220;We will continue to deliver the best music service on the Internet to our users, and we will expand our capacity to strengthen fan-to-artist connections through our technology.&#8221;</p>
