Tonight’s D: Dive Into Mobile kicked off with an in-depth interview with Andy Rubin, Google’s head of Android. The discussion went a little long, but that didn’t keep the attendees and All Things D staff from partying the night away. Walt, Kara and the D staff gobbled up mountains of tiny cupcakes and sipped a drink or two.

The International Consumer Electronics Show didn’t break any attendance records this year, but it did post a slight increase in visitors–which is something in a down economy.

The Consumer Electronics Show starts Thursday and will feature thousands of technology vendors clamoring for attention. They’ll have their work cut out for them. The Apple tablet, an Internet-connected, touch-screen device, has dominated the tech blogosphere in recent weeks, even though it hasn’t been formally announced by the secretive company.

CES Honcho Is Upbeat, But So Is Macworld Chief

Gary Shapiro is quick to admit that last year’s Consumer Electronics Show–held during the darkest days of the recession–was pretty depressing. But his enthusiasm has recovered. “I’m more excited about this CES than any in the 28 years I’ve been attending the show,” says Shapiro, president and chief executive of the Consumer Electronics Association, which organizes the event.

With registration down by 20 percent over last year, there are likely to be far fewer attendees, and with a growing list of companies pulling out of the show, there’ll be fewer booths for them to crowd. Earlier this week, Adobe said it had decided against exhibiting on the show floor. A coterie of other companies is joining it, top among them, Belkin, which has also pulled out of exhibiting at CES. What’s next–a Super Bowl boycott?
