			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Is there anything you people won&#8217;t watch online? Doesn&#8217;t look like it, based on the newest Web video numbers from Nielsen. While stats show that the overall size of the Internet video audience has increased by 12 percent in the last year, the amount of video consumed has shot up 25 percent.</p>

<p>Note that these numbers are actually all <em>down</em> from August. Apparently some of you spent your last days before returning to work or school in front of your Web browser.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, Nielsen&#8217;s Top 10 list has the usual suspects. That is&#8211;Google&#8217;s (GOOG) YouTube and then everyone else. Interesting to note the disparity between total audience and total streams on Hulu compared to Yahoo (YHOO) and Microsoft&#8217;s (MSFT) MSN. Hulu is attracting a smaller but much more engaged audience than the big portals.</p>
<p>At some point, this could be a problem for the joint venture between News Corp.&#8217;s (NWS) Fox, GE&#8217;s (GE) NBC Universal and Disney&#8217;s (DIS) ABC since advertisers ultimately want reach. But it&#8217;s still astonishingly early for the site&#8211;recall that it only went out of beta in March 2008, and doesn&#8217;t have a major portal promoting it.</p>

<p>One caveat: Note that for whatever reason, Web video publishers tend to push the numbers they get from comScore (SCOR) more than the Nielsen numbers. But directionally, they tend to say the same thing.</p>
<p>Allrighty, then. If you&#8217;re going to spend so much time watching Web clips, best to make sure you&#8217;re watching something excellent. Like this clip from last night&#8217;s &#8220;The Daily Show&#8221;&#8211;a classic evisceration of CNN. Jon Stewart and crew often go after the cable channel and its brethren, but this one is particularly good. Warning! It is more than 11 minutes long!</p>

Microsoft’s new search engine saw its U.S. search share fall to 8.99 percent in September from 9.49 percent in August, according to <a href="http://www.hitwise.com/us/press-center/press-releases/google-searches-sept-09">figures from Hitwise</a> (see table below; click to enlarge).</p>
<p>Troubling news for Microsoft (MSFT). Hitwise&#8217;s latest numbers are the second set of metrics from a Web analytics firm showing Bing’s market share in decline. Last week, StatCounter claimed Bing’s share of the U.S. search market in September had <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20091001/statcounter-bing/">slipped to 8.5 percent from 9.6 percent in August</a>.</p>
<p><a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/files/2009/10/hitwise.jpg" rel="lightbox"><img src="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/files/2009/10/hitwise-250x172.jpg" alt="hitwise" title="hitwise" width="250" height="172" class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-26158" /></a></p>
<p>As I noted then, while a month of slight decline might herald the beginning of a trend, it certainly doesn’t guarantee one&#8211;especially in search, where surges and lulls in market share are quite common. That said, this is the second set of data suggesting that Bing’s traffic may be leveling out. Whether this reflects the end of the big Bing marketing campaign or falling consumer interest remains to be seen.</p>
<p>Incidentally, Microsoft’s new search partner, Yahoo (YHOO), also saw its search share slip for the month, according to Hitwise. Yahoo claimed 16.96 percent in August. In September, it claimed 16.38 percent. Meanwhile, Google (GOOG) took 71.08 percent share for the month, up from 70.24 percent in August.</p>

<p>&#8220;Notwithstanding the slow recovery of demand from the enterprise sector, we are encouraged that industry momentum has turned positive following the steepest downturn in more than a decade,&#8221; said SIA President George Scalise.</p>
<p>Great news were it not for the fact that at $19.1 billion, August sales were down a horrific 16.1 percent year-over-year. Furthermore, for the first eight months of 2009, sales are at $133.8 billion&#8211;about 21.3 percent below this time last year.</p>
<p>So while it’s wonderful that we’re seeing these sequential improvements, it’s important to remember that the industry is still fairly deep in the abyss and has a long way to go before it climbs out.</p>

After months of slight but steady increases in market share, Bing&#8217;s percentage of the search market in the United States and abroad fell in September for the first time.</p>
<p>New metrics from Web analytics firm StatCounter show Bing’s share of the U.S. search market in September falling to 8.5 percent from 9.6 percent in August. Its share of the global market declined as well, slipping to  3.25 percent from 3.58 percent.</p>
<p>Microsoft’s (MSFT) new search partner, Yahoo (YHOO), also suffered a decline. Its market share fell to 9.4 percent from 10.50 percent in the U.S. and to 4.37 percent from 4.84 abroad. Meanwhile, Google&#8217;s (GOOG) September share rose to 80 percent from 77.8 percent in the U.S. and to 90.54 percent from 90 percent globally. (See chart below; click to enlarge.)<br />

<p> “The trend has been downwards for Bing since mid August,” <a href="http://gs.statcounter.com/press/bing-records-first-monthly-decline-since-launch">StatCounter CEO Aodhan Cullen said in a statement</a>. &#8220;The wheels haven’t fallen off but the underlying trend must be a little worrying for Microsoft.&#8221;</p>
<p>Mmm, I doubt it. While a month of slight decline might herald the beginning of a trend, it certainly doesn’t guarantee one, especially in search, where surges and declines in market share are quite common. Furthermore, we haven’t yet seen search metrics from <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090917/bing-growing-8-times-faster-than-google/">Nielsen</a>, <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090922/more-modest-results-for-microsofts-marketing-blitz-now-its-yahoos-turn/">comScore</a> (SCOR), and <a href="http://www.hitwise.com/us/press-center/press-releases/google-searches-aug-09/">Hitwise</a>. And all three showed Bing gaining share in August, a month that <a href="http://gs.statcounter.com/press/bing-slows-in-race-against-google">Statcounter claimed shows the  beginning of a downward trend</a>.</p>

<p>Per <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090818/two-months-plus-a-big-ad-blitz-equal-a-modest-move-for-bing/">usual</a>, you can either argue that these modest gains are good news for Microsoft (MSFT), especially because they come after months of declines. Or you can argue that they are way too modest, given the hype and the media blitz that accompanied the launch.</p>
<p>My question: If you&#8217;re Carol Bartz and company and you&#8217;re about to launch a <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090913/exclusive-yahoo-set-to-unveil-massive-new-marketing-campaign-at-advertising-week-declaring-size-does-matter/">Bing-sized marketing campaign </a> of your own, do Microsoft&#8217;s results give you encouragement or pause?</p>
<p>Again, the half-full argument is that the Bing blitz proves that given enough brute force, you can indeed use offline advertising to change online behavior, at least in the short term.</p>
<p>Half-empty: At least Microsoft&#8217;s pitch has an intriguing come-on&#8211;&#8221;Hey you! We&#8217;ve got a search engine that works better than Google (GOOG)! Come see for yourself!&#8221; But unless I&#8217;m missing something, there&#8217;s nothing equally compelling powering Yahoo&#8217;s &#8220;Its You!&#8221; push.</p>
<p>Maybe I&#8217;m wrong: Yahoo (YHOO) formally takes the drapes off its campaign this morning at a series of Advertising Week events. I&#8217;ll report back a little later today.</p>

<p>According to the research outfit, Mac sales for July and August are up seven percent year-over-year. If this proves true, Apple (AAPL) should sell somewhere around 2.75 and 2.8 million Macs in the quarter, which would match or slightly exceed Wall Street consensus estimates. IPod sales should meet estimates as well, though NPD reports that year-over-year sales during July and August were down 16 percent.</p>
<p>Munster figures Apple will sell  9.5 million to 10.5 million iPods for the quarter. The Street is looking for 10 million, and with the launch of the newest nano, Apple will likely meet this goal.</p>
<p>&#8220;We are expecting reacceleration in the final month of the quarter given the new iPod nanos that shipped on 9/9,&#8221; Munster explained. &#8220;Also, iPod international is growing faster than domestic. In other words, we believe the actual reported numbers for iPod will be slightly better than NPD would suggest.&#8221;</p>

<p>If it was, surely we wouldn’t be seeing the sixth consecutive month of declining sales reported by NPD. According to the market research firm, overall sales in the United States in August of hardware, software and game accessories were $909 million&#8211;<a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/internetNews/idUSTRE58A09X20090911">a 16 percent drop from the same period a year ago.</a></p>
<p>Hardware sales were down 25 percent for the month and 17 percent for the year. Software fared little better. It was down 15 percent for the month and 14 percent for the year.</p>
<p>Six straight months of falling sales. Overall, the industry is down 14 percent for the year, earning nearly $9.1 billion so far in 2009, according to NPD. Is this a trend that can be dismissed with <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601087&amp;sid=aptOxeZjA738&amp;refer=home">the standard &#8220;well, software drives console sales&#8221; explanation</a>? I’m not so sure. It’s not like Mario Kart and Madden NFL 10 have disappeared from the shelves. Indeed, they’re still  top-selling titles. They’re still driving sales. They’re just driving a hell of a lot fewer of them.</p>
<p>Indeed, Electronic Arts (ERTS) CEO John Riccitiello bemoaned this very fact in an email to employees, released yesterday. &#8220;It is discouraging that one of our highest-rated and best-marketed ‘Madden’ titles in years is facing strong headwinds,&#8221; he said, adding industry trends &#8220;present a challenge.&#8221;</p>
<p>Perhaps that’s because we’re in the middle of the worst American recession in 50 years and $40 for a videogame is still $40. I&#8217;ll bet $5 and my old Intellivision that the videogame industry will post its first year-over-year loss since 2004 this year.</p>

<p>&#8220;In July, our checks had indicated store managers were strongly recommending the legacy iPhone,&#8221; Munster notes, &#8220;as we believe this was partially driven by store representatives hoping to make the sale with the 3GS stocked out combined with efforts to reduce existing inventory levels of the legacy iPhone. However, in August, our checks indicate store managers are increasingly recommending the 3GS, and we believe this is driven by improved availability of the 3GS at most AT&#038;T stores.&#8221;</p>
<p>Munster summarizes: &#8220;Overall, the iPhone remains the best selling device and our August checks indicate the iPhone took share from BlackBerry, the Nokia E71x, and most other competitor products. Finally, in our checks at Best Buy, store managers indicated the iPhone was their best selling device with stores selling out of stock as soon as they received the Apple smartphones.&#8221;</p>

<p>&#8220;Based on our channel checks, the iPhone remains the best selling device at AT&#038;T with both the new $200/$300 iPhone 3GS and $100 legacy iPhone selling very well,&#8221; Piper Jaffary analyst Gene Munster said in a research note today. </p>
<p>&#8220;In July, our checks had indicated store managers were strongly recommending the legacy iPhone,&#8221; Munster notes, &#8220;as we believe this was partially driven by store representatives hoping to make the sale with the 3GS stocked out combined with efforts to reduce existing inventory levels of the legacy iPhone. However, in August, our checks indicate store managers are increasingly recommending the 3GS, and we believe this is driven by improved availability of the 3GS at most AT&#038;T stores.&#8221;</p>
<p>Munster summarizes: &#8220;Overall, the iPhone remains the best selling device and our August checks indicate the iPhone took share from BlackBerry, the Nokia E71x, and most other competitor products. Finally, in our checks at Best Buy, store managers indicated the iPhone was their best selling device with stores selling out of stock as soon as they received the Apple smartphones.&#8221;</p>

<p>Thus, here&#8217;s a doozie Yahoo (YHOO) CEO Carol Bartz recently sent to her troops.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s actually from mid-August, although it took me this long to get my hands on it, as people at the company are justifiably a little memo-leaking shy after this missive that complains of the sugar-low mood of the staff.</p>
<p>One in a series of weekly Friday communications from her, some of which I have posted before, this one got a lot of attention internally, especially among the down-in-the-dumps engineering staff, who were less than pleased with the damn-the-torpedoes-stop-yer-whining tone of the memo.</p>
<p>Whatever the reaction, it is certainly a classic Bartz times 10&#8211;a definite back of the hand for those Yahoos who perhaps dwelled too much on whether or not they liked the recent search deal she struck with Microsoft (MSFT).</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s the basic gist of it: Fie on naysayers, stop bellyaching, Yahoo rocks and get back to work!</p>
<p>And here&#8217;s the memo&#8211;referencing the tough week, her knee surgery and the need to <em>focus, people!!!</em>&#8211;with the email address section omitted:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>I&#8217;ve had one! All the work, all the explaining, all the opinions!</p>
<p>I wanted to crawl into a hole and eat chocolate (and of course my knee boo-boo made me feel even sorrier for myself). Making the search decision and driving this much change for us was hard, but it is done.</p>
<p>So I am out of the hole, ready to attack the future. We are Yahoo! 581 MILLION PEOPLE came to us last month. Our audience increased 1.9% month-over-month, faster than the overall Internet population (1.2%).</p>

Without official numbers from Palm or Sprint, it’s nearly impossible to tell. But that hasn’t stopped analysts from taking a stab at it. Earlier this week, Pali Research analyst Walter Piecyk issued a research note claiming <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090709/pre-sales-slow-again/">channel checks show a gradual tapering off of Pre sales</a>, from an estimated 50,000-60,000 units sold the week ending June 26 to just over 30,000 last week.</p>
<p>Today brings another Palm-related research note, this one from Pacific Crest analyst James Faucette. He claims that Pre sales are &#8220;robust.&#8221; According to Faucette’s channel checks, Palm is selling about 40,000 Pres per week, a  &#8220;normalized&#8221; sell-through rate that he says will continue through August.</p>
<p>So who’s right? Piecyk or Faucette? Who knows? Until Palm (PALM) and Sprint (S) go on record with real sales metrics, we’ll have to use our imaginations. Which is pretty much what all these analysts appear to be doing right now, anyway. Honestly, they might as well be issuing research notes on jelly bean jar guessing games.</p>
<p>Oh, and for what it’s worth, Palm and Sprint are not willing to release sales numbers right now. Reached for comment, Sprint told me, &#8220;We&#8217;re excited by the response to Palm Pre. Demand continues to be strong, and we are working closely with our partners at Palm to meet the needs of every customer as quickly as possible.&#8221; And Palm told me me to call Sprint&#8230;</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><em>Here are a few questions I’ve received recently from people like you, and my answers. I have edited and restated the questions a bit, for readability.</em></p>
<p class="question">In your review of the new iPhone 3GS, you said that AT&#038;T had changed its upgrade policy so some buyers of the previous model could get the new-customer price earlier than planned. Can you explain this in more detail?</p>
<p>Almost all cellphones in the U.S. are subsidized by the carriers to bring down prices. Typically, existing customers—who have already benefited from a subsidy—can’t upgrade at the lower new-customer price (in this case $199) until they reach a point in their contracts where this subsidy has been recovered. These dates vary, based on a formula that takes into account things like the customer’s monthly spending rate.</p>
<p>When some early adopters of the 2008 iPhone model, the 3G, discovered they wouldn’t immediately qualify for this $199 “standard upgrade” price—the same as the new-customer price—they got angry. So AT&#038;T made a concession, but only a partial one. It declared that any customer who had been told he or she couldn’t get the $199 price until sometime in July, August or September of 2009 would in fact now be able to qualify for that lower price starting on the first day of availability.</p>
<p>This concession doesn’t apply at all to owners of the original 2007 iPhone, or even every owner of the 2008 3G model. And it isn’t based on when you bought your 3G, but when the system told you that you could buy the new model at the “standard” upgrade price of $199. You can check the price AT&#038;T or Apple will charge you for an upgrade by going to www.att.com/iPhone and clicking on “Check upgrade eligibility.”</p>
<p class="question">I’ve recently heard that the new Palm Pre smart phone is unable to import data from the old Palm Desktop program. In other words, if you have Palm Desktop filled with data from a previous Palm model, you’ll be unable to get that data into your new Palm Pre. Is this true?</p>
<p>No. While the Pre isn’t designed to repeatedly sync with the old Palm Desktop software, Palm does offer a program, for Windows and Mac, that will perform a one-time import of your old data from Palm Desktop. It can also do a one-time import of data from certain other desktop programs as well, including Microsoft Outlook on Windows, and iCal and Address Book on the Mac. This program will help you move your data to one of the online services, such as Google, with which the Pre is designed to sync continuously. The software is called the Palm Data Transfer Assistant and is free at <a href="http://bit.ly/3lIaZ">http://bit.ly/3lIaZ</a>.</p>
<p class="question">I am contemplating purchasing the 17” MacBook Pro rather than the 13” or 15” models because the antiglare matte screen is offered only with the 17”. How bad is the glare on the smaller screens and how cumbersome do you find the larger 17” MacBook Pro?</p>
<p>For a laptop of its size, the 17” MacBook Pro is remarkably thin and light. But I did find it cumbersome to use in coach seats on airplanes and to cram into small briefcases. As for the glossy screens, which are now the most common option on many laptops, they bothered me at first, but I don’t notice the glare now. However, both of these are personal issues. So my suggestion is to go to a store and see for yourself. </p>

<p>It seems that morbid interest in the stock market&#8217;s decline is driving up Yahoo (YHOO) video streams, as well. The much diminished Internet major claimed 265 million video streams in September, a 56 percent increase  over the 169 million it claimed in August. And that puts it in <a href="http://www.beet.tv/2008/10/yahoo-video-str.html">the No. 2 spot on Nielsen Online’s monthly VideoCensus</a>. Impressive, no?  Presumably, October will be even better, given the upcoming presidential election.</p>
<p>That said, as in search, Google (GOOG) is the one to beat in Web video. The company&#8217;s YouTube property served up an astonishing 5.3 billion streams.</p>

Yahoo Finance had 19.9 million unique users in the month of September,  according to comScore&#8211;an all-time high for the site (see chart; click to enlarge). </p>

According to research outfit Net Applications, <a href="http://marketshare.hitslink.com/report.aspx?qprid=8">Apple&#8217;s share of the operating system market rose nearly four-tenths of a percentage point in September</a>, its biggest one-month gain since May (click on the chart below for a larger version).</p>
<p><a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/files/2008/10/sept_os_marketshare.jpg"rel="lightbox"><img src="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/files/2008/10/sept_os_marketshare-300x111.jpg" alt="" title="sept_os_marketshare" width="300" height="111" class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-6103" /></a></p>
<p>Today, Mac OS X runs on 8.23 percent of the machines accessing the 40,000 sites monitored by Net Applications. Two years ago it was running on a little over 5 percent. That&#8217;s a 58 percent gain. Quite an achievement, though at 8.23 percent, Apple&#8217;s (AAPL) share of the OS market is still dwarfed by the 90.29 percent held by Microsoft and its Windows OS. That said Windows&#8217;s market share does appear to be slipping. It dropped 0.4 percent from August to September.</p>
