<p>Well, Wayn must have liked what he saw at the Silicon Valley Internet giant, since he is bouncing there from his job at the Redmond, Wash. software giant to help run local efforts at Yahoo.</p>
<p>[<strong>UPDATING</strong> local roles at Yahoo.]</p>
<p>Wayn will be working for Chief Product Officer Blake Irving  and will be responsible for product management of Yahoo&#8217;s local &#8220;horizontal.&#8221;</p>
<p>He will work closely with whoever Yahoo finds as a replacement for <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110315/after-ad-changes-yahoo-media-unit-gets-a-management-shakeup/">Matt Idema</a>, a longtime Yahoo exec who shuttled over to Facebook as a director of business operations, working on the local arena.</p>
<p><a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110315/after-ad-changes-yahoo-media-unit-gets-a-management-shakeup/">Luke Beatty</a>, who heads up Yahoo&#8217;s Americas region community and local businesses, including Flickr, Groups, Answers and hundreds of local sites, is doing Idema&#8217;s job for now within Americas head Ross Levinsohn&#8217;s unit.</p>
<p>Local is a hugely hot space right now, with a spate of Web focus from giants like Google and Facebook to powerful start-ups such as Foursquare and Groupon.</p>
<p>Wayn has more recently been working on international for Microsoft&#8217;s MSN portal. The Australian native has also worked at AOL and, interestingly, has an actual medical degree.</p>
<p>In other words: <em>Paging Dr. Local, stat!</em></p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img src="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/files/2011/02/daily-150x150.jpg" alt="" title="daily" width="150" height="150" class="alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-29132" />It&#8217;s time, finally, for News Corp. to show off the Daily, the iPad newspaper it has been building for some six months.</p>
<p>This debut was supposed to happen a few weeks ago in San Francisco, with <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20110113/a-delay-for-the-daily-apple-news-corp-push-back-launch-date/">Rupert Murdoch and Steve Jobs sharing stage time</a>. Instead, Murdoch will show off his new publication at the Guggenheim in New York, with Apple content boss Eddy Cue stepping in for Jobs.</p>
<p>We&#8217;ve got a very good idea of what to expect: <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20110201/rupert-murdoch-gives-guests-a-sneak-peek-of-tomorrows-daily-tonight-heres-what-theyll-see/?mod=ATD_search">A newspaper that&#8217;s both old-fashioned and cutting-edge</a>, which will sell for 99 cents a week or <a href="http://twitter.com/#!/pkafka/statuses/32769157720186880">$40 a year</a>. And the best way to experience the new publication will be on an iPad, not at a museum.</p>
<p>Still, it will be interesting to hear News Corp. pitch this one in real time, and to see how it leverages all of its resources and a very rare Apple endorsement. (This Web site, we should note, is owned by News Corp. as well.)</p>
<p><strong>10:40 am</strong>: Greetings! So excited to be in the Guggenheim that I&#8217;m starting this one a few minutes early.</p>
<p><strong>10:44 am</strong>: And here&#8217;s Jon Miller, who has been shepherding this thing at News Corp. Here&#8217;s some fresh scoop! The Daily will be be live onstage for the demo, he says, but won&#8217;t appear at the app store until noon.</p>

<p>10:48 And Steve Rubenstein, who has been handling PR for the Daily launch. He semi-taunts me by noting that there were tasty canap&eacute;s at Rupert Murdoch&#8217;s private party Tuesday night.</p>

<p><strong>10:52 am</strong>: BREAKING NEWS! Jon Miller says Wi-Fi here at the Guggenheim has been working &#8220;intermittently.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>10:52 am</strong>: WAAAAAAY More interesting is that Engadget&#8217;s Joanna Stern being hassled for daring to take out a camera during a press conference. She is being moved three seats back. Where that&#8217;s OK, apparently.</p>
<p><strong>10:56 am</strong>: Pre-launch music, btw: Some kinda samba thing going on. Festive and, dare I say, a smidge bit sexy. Rowr!</p>
<p><strong>10:58 am</strong>: Slightly curious is that registration staff told media that they&#8217;ll have &#8220;review units&#8221; available after presser. But everyone in media has an iPad, right? It&#8217;s required, no?</p>
<p>Perhaps the notion is that the presser will end before noon, and the Daily won&#8217;t be available until then, so if you want to get hands-on in the meantime, that&#8217;s the way to go. Which would be smart!</p>
<p>On the other hand, if they&#8217;re simply handing out free &#8220;review&#8221; units to the press, well, that&#8217;s kinda smart too. Because the press likes free stuff.</p>
<p><strong>11:03 am</strong>: Our crack tech guy Adam Tow tells me TheDaily.com site is now saying that the app will be available at noon ET. I can&#8217;t see that on my screen, but I&#8217;ll take his word for it.</p>
<p>Especially because that&#8217;s what Jon Miller said a few minutes ago.</p>
<p><strong>11:05 am</strong>: Given News Corp. pub WSJ&#8217;s focus on privacy, and Apple&#8217;s, interesting to review the Daily&#8217;s:</p>

<p>Announcement &#8220;very soon for other news publications.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>Q: How will you measure impressions, etc. for advertising?</strong></p>
<p>Miller: Will have tech built into app for that. I should have mentioned during presentation that we love advertisers.</p>

<p>A: We want to sell millions. But keep costs low. We have spent $30 million so far, &#8220;all of which has been written off in figures we&#8217;ll announce today.&#8221; But overall costs $500,000 a week going forward.</p>

<p>A: Murdoch: &#8220;The editorial position will be in the hands of the editor.&#8221; Cue Angelo, who sorta hedges. On op-ed page, &#8220;We&#8217;re patriotic.&#8221;</p>

<p>A: Angelo: Thinking it through. We know that people spend a lot of time with these apps&#8211;35 minutes, 40 minutes. &#8220;It&#8217;s unbelievable.&#8221; So how do you create content rich enough to keep people there?</p>
<p><strong>Q: What did Steve Jobs say about this in the last couple of days?</strong></p>
<p>A: Murdoch: &#8220;He did call me last week&#8221; and told me app was &#8220;really terrific. He was extremely flattering.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>Q: How will people find this stuff, since it&#8217;s not on the Web?</strong></p>
<p>A: Cue: We&#8217;ve downloaded 10 billion apps. People can find this stuff.</p>
<p>Miller: We feel really good about this. We didn&#8217;t want to make compromises.</p>

<p><strong>11:47 am: Q: How do you balance a subscription model with a large audience that advertisers want?</strong></p>
<p>Murdoch: &#8220;They&#8217;d pay a much lower rate per thousand if it was free. They realize it&#8217;s something that people want.&#8221; And we can tell them more about who sees it. &#8220;It&#8217;s not just scattered out there&#8230;.We&#8217;ll draw a better class of advertiser, and a better rate.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>11:48 am: Q: What&#8217;s the split between ad and subscription revenue?</strong></p>
<p>Miller: Subscription will be larger at start, and then eventually 50-50, &#8220;which is the magic number.&#8221;</p>

<p><img src="http://emoney.allthingsd.com/files/2011/01/groupon-on-facebook-163x300.jpg" alt="" title="groupon on facebook" width="163" height="300" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-1166" />In an appeal to customers today, Groupon co-founder and CEO Andrew Mason explained <a href="http://www.groupon.com/blog/cities/why-groupon-isnt-in-australia/">in a blog post</a> why it is suing an Australian competitor, Scoopon.</p>
<p>And the story is pretty juicy: Gabby and Hezi Leibovitch, two brothers who started Scoopon in Australia, have purchased the Groupon.com.au domain name, registered the company name of Groupon Pty Limited and tried registering the Groupon trademark in Australia.</p>
<p>&#8220;The way we see things, this is a classic case of domain squatting&#8211;an unfortunate reality of the Internet business,&#8221; Mason wrote. &#8220;As Groupon became internationally known, opportunistic domain squatters around the world started to buy local Groupon domain names, thinking that we’d eventually be forced to buy them at an insane price.&#8221;</p>
<p>But wait, there&#8217;s more: Groupon offered the brothers $286,000 for the Groupon.com.au domain and trademark, and Mason claims they accepted the offer.</p>
<p>Then they changed their minds (presumably around the time Groupon turned down $6 billion from Google, and then was rumored to be raising nearly $1 billion in fresh capital). No doubt, the Leibovitch brothers now have a much richer number in mind.</p>
<p>To that end, Mason says his company is choosing the path of last resort: &#8220;Left with no other options, we’ve filed a lawsuit against Scoopon, claiming that their Groupon trademark was filed in bad faith (amongst other things).&#8221;</p>
<p>In the meantime, the nearly $300,000 offer continues to stand, and Groupon has opened shop under an alias: <a href="http://www.stardeals.com.au/">www.stardeals.com.au/</a>.</p>
<p>If a court doesn&#8217;t come down on his side, Mason is hoping customers will: &#8220;Apologies&#8211;we don’t like to bother our customers with these things, but felt you deserved to understand why it’s taking us so long in Australia,&#8221; he wrote.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.facebook.com/GrouponInAustralia">A &#8220;Groupon in Australia&#8221; Facebook group</a> has been created to raise awareness of the situation, and by this afternoon had already counted 568 members.</p>

<p>The full trailer from Sony (SNE) film unit Columbia Pictures, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100715/the-facebook-movie-full-trailer-creepier-pokier-anti-zuckerbergier/">released last week</a>, uses a creepy Vega Choir version of the Radiohead song &#8220;Creep,&#8221; and has all kinds of dramatic flourishes&#8211;making it perfect for spoofs.</p>
<p>Here are three, from: 1938 Media (in which co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg is played by a 2&#215;4 piece of wood); from Australian comic Dan Ilic; and one that&#8217;s not exactly a trailer, but is the interview Walt Mossberg and I did at the eighth <strong>D: All Things Digital</strong> conference with <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100610/full-d8-video-facebook-ceo-mark-zuckerberg/">Zuckerberg</a> set to &#8220;Creep&#8221; (it oddly enough works).</p>

The ensuing debate made us realize we needed to be a lot clearer and more explicit about what we are doing in our Voices section, which includes short excerpts of third-party content from outside our site, and to make those policies more prominent and transparent.

Some will disagree with the changes we have made and some will not think they go far enough. But we hope we have addressed the key issues.]]></description>

<p>As of today, we have made important changes to the <strong>All Things Digital</strong> Voices section, which should be of interest to some (and not at all to others).</p>
<p>Why? Well, a few weeks ago, <strong>ATD</strong> was caught up in a bit of the controversy that broke out due to louder-than-usual complaints by several traditional media companies about how their content is treated on the Web.</p>
<p>Without going into a long explanation: They expressed displeasure that some sites were misusing their content via aggregation.</p>
<p>In fact, Robert Thomson, Dow Jones editor-in-chief and also The Wall Street Journal managing editor, was widely quoted in an <a href="http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/business/story/0,28124,25293711-7582,00.html">interview in The Australian</a> saying, &#8220;There is no doubt that certain websites are best described as parasites or tech tapeworms in the intestines of the internet.&#8221;</p>
<p>That sounds <em>very</em> painful, digitally speaking.</p>
<p>Many on the Web were incensed by that remark and then <a href="http://gawker.com/5204940/outrage-wsj-in-blog-duplicity-scandal">quickly pointed to the fact</a> that <strong>ATD</strong>&#8211;which is owned by Dow Jones&#8211;has a section called Voices that publishes original columns done for our site and posts from other Dow Jones properties, but <em>also</em> points to third-party posts we admire and want our readers to be aware of.</p>
<p>Instead of using simple blue links, we feature these three kinds of content in a marked section on the front page and also in the Voices section itself, using their original headlines and short excerpts from the posts directly. We do not change the text we use, nor do we synopsize it.</p>
<p>We also identify the authors by title and picture (until now, we used a <strong>D</strong> icon if we could not get a picture, but have changed that going forward), and provide links to the original sites so readers can read the entire piece there.</p>
<p>But what we have been doing in Voices was not perfect or as clear as it should have been, which was written about by many, including <a href="http://waxy.org/2009/04/all_things_digital_and_transparency_in_online_journalism/">Andy Baio of Waxy.org&#8217;s thoughtful piece</a> on the issue.</p>
<p>In it, Baio talked to both bloggers and writers who were unhappy about being featured in Voices, as well as those who liked it.</p>
<p>While we did not agree with all the complaints in the story, the debate did make us realize we needed to be a lot clearer and more explicit about what we are doing, and to make those policies&#8211;which we had not posted in as much detail as we have, for example, about our ethics statements (<a href="http://allthingsd.com/about/kara-swisher/ethics/">you can see mine here</a>, for example)&#8211;more prominent and transparent.</p>
<p>Some will disagree with the changes we have made and some will not think they go far enough.</p>
<p>But we hope we have addressed the key issues, including making it clearer that these posts are <em>not</em> ours, posting our policy prominently to avoid confusion about exactly what Voices is and removing all comments and sharing icons from posts that are not original to our site.</p>
<p>We are also now linking directly to original sites from the front page excerpt, without forcing anyone into the Voices section, where we also link to original sites.</p>
<p>We made a number of other changes, described below in their entirety, and are also now easy to find on both the front page and on the Voices page.</p>
<p>Let us be clear: We have always aimed for our Voices section to point to other posts around the Web that we find laudable, interesting or provocative in ways we think our readers should be aware, and we want readers to read them in full on their original site.</p>
<p>The myriad of issues around aggregation and linking is clearly likely going to result in a long and difficult debate, as the ways in which media are discovered by and delivered to consumers changes in the digital age.</p>
<p>Our site obviously believes deeply that linking and pointing and sharing are all an important part of the new media landscape and we remain open to trying to create a system that all players think is fair and equitable.</p>
<p>And, most of all, we hope no one will get too nauseous in the process.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s the new explanation of what Voices is, which is permanently and prominently posted on the site:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>This is a section of the <strong>All Things Digital</strong> Web site featuring posts from around the Web, from other Dow Jones properties and also original pieces we solicit. The section is now explicitly labeled that it comes &#8220;from other Web sites.&#8221;</p>
<p>We are fully aware of the controversies around how linking and aggregating are done on the Web, and we in no way are attempting to &#8220;scrape&#8221; original content created by others. Instead, regarding third-party posts, we are trying to point readers of this site to other posts from around the Web that we admire, and are trying to do so in the quickest manner possible.</p>
<p>The Internet is full of terrific content that is not ours and we want to help our readers find it by making editorial suggestions&#8211;<em>Look, Mom, no algorithm!</em>&#8211;of posts we think are worth their time.</p>
<p>That is why we have made even more changes to Voices to ensure we do this in the most transparent and timely way. While we don&#8217;t expect that everyone will agree with our policies, we have made changes that reflect our intent in pointing to content outside our site.</p>
<p>So here is exactly what we do:</p>
<p>We link directly to the post&#8217;s original site from the <strong>headline</strong> on the front page of <strong>All Things Digital</strong> and use the smallest amount of text possible to give readers a sense of the topic of the post.</p>
<p>Instead of using simple blue links, we feature these three kinds of content in Voices in a marked section on the front page and also in the Voices section itself, using their original headlines and short excerpts from the posts directly. We do not change the text we use, nor do we synopsize it.</p>
<p>We fully identify the site the author is writing for, to make sure readers are aware that this is not written for our site. We take attributions from the originating site, but if we have made an error or it is incomplete, we will make sure it is corrected as soon as we are informed of any problems.</p>
<p>We use pictures of the authors from their sites and, if one is not available, we now will be using generic male and female icons going forward, to minimize any confusion that the piece was written for our site.</p>
<p>You can also see the posts when you visit the Voices section, where we feature them, again with the smallest amount of text possible and direct links to the original site. In that section, we pick our favorite post of the day.</p>
<p>We have also removed comments and sharing icons from the posts that are not original to our site.</p>
<p>All content for Voices is selected by, and/or solicited by, the editors of <strong>All Things Digital</strong>.</p>
<p>If you do not want your pieces selected for our Voices section, please let us know immediately and we will refrain from pointing to any of your work. We will also, on request from an author or site, remove past posts, if so requested.</p>
<p>Regarding original material, we are open to proposals at any time. If you have an idea for an original Voices post, please send it, in the form of a short paragraph, to voices@allthingsd.com. Include a second short paragraph describing yourself and your relevant credentials.</p>
<p>If we like it, we may invite you to submit the full post, and consider publishing it. However, we lack the staff and time to acknowledge such proposals or to engage in a debate or discussion about their suitability. You will only hear from us if we are interested.</p>
<p>We reserve the right to edit the original posts we publish in Voices, but all legal responsibility for their content rests solely with their authors.</p>
<p>We do not make editing changes to posts from other Web sites we point to, except to add ticker symbols when appropriate. We obviously claim no copyright over any content that is not original to our site.</p>
