Microsoft and Toyota Drive to the Cloud With Azure-based Electronics Systems for the Car

Redmond has struck a deal where the Japanese automaker will use the Windows Azure cloud-based operating system to power a new generation of in-car electronics. In a Webcast, the CEOs of both companies outlined the deal, and reflected on the impact of the recent earthquake in Japan.

AOL Confirms Tim Stevens as New Engadget Editor in Chief

As BoomTown reported earlier, AOL has confirmed that Tim Stevens (pictured here as Speed Racer) will replace Josh Topolsky as Editor-in-Chief of Engadget. Stevens has been working at the site since 2007, most recently as its automotive editor and also–until recently–part time. The appointment comes as eight former staffers at the giant tech news site said they were joining together to create a competing gadget site.

Jim Bankoff, the fomer AOL exec responsible for buying Engadget for the Internet portal, has grabbed eight staffers who had recently left the huge tech site amid tensions, in order to start a new gadget property for his SB Nation sports and news platform. The site–which is still unnamed and will be run by outgoing Engadget Editor-in-Chief Josh Topolsky–will debut sometime in the fall. Meanwhile, AOL has zeroed in on a new leader to replace Topolsky.

TI Reports Strong Results, Outlook

Texas Instruments Inc.’s fourth-quarter profit soared on stronger sales and higher margins, aided by a return of demand from industrial markets. The Dallas-based chip maker’s results benefited from a 27 percent jump in sales of analog chips, used in everything from cell phones and manufacturing equipment. The company also said its first-quarter results could surpass its fourth quarter, rather than the typical seasonal slowdown.

No big surprises here. The souring economy and related uncertainty in consumer and enterprise technology markets continue to drag the chip sector down into the mud. While world-wide sales of semiconductors in March rose 3.3 percent from February, they were down nearly 30 percent from last year.

It’s no surprise that financial advertising has slowed down in the first three quarters of 2008. The surprise is that it’s only been a 10 percent reduction, according to Nielsen. But next year will be worse, of course.
