IPhone 5 to Headline Apple's Fall Music Event?

It’s looking more and more like Apple’s fifth-generation iPhone won’t debut until the company’s 2012 fiscal year, which begins in late September. That’s the latest intelligence from Avian Securities, which says the supply chain chatter it’s been hearing suggests Apple plans to launch its newest iPhone quite a bit later than it’s launched others in the past.

My Prediction, Palm: Pain.

Palm lost about half a billion dollars in market value last week after the company warned of a nasty revenue shortfall. And it seems that was only the beginning of what may prove to be a long and painful decline. Investors brutalized the company Thursday, slashing nearly five percent from its share price.

Is The Street Too Cautious on 2010 PC Sales?

It looks like 2010 could be an impressive rebound year for the PC sector–and in particular the disk-drive, processor and memory chip companies that provide key parts. In fact, as Avian Securites research chief Avi Cohen asserts in a note this morning, mainstream forecasts for PC unit growth in 2010 could be too low.

VC-Backed Companies Could Be Next On H-P's Shopping List

When Hewlett-Packard Co. announced the $2.7 billion purchase of 3Com Corp., it let the world know that H-P intends to compete fully with Cisco Systems Inc. in the corporate data center. With its strength in Ethernet, 3Com gives HP a major piece of the pie, but it still needs a few more slices if it wants to be a one-stop-shop for data centers.

Semi: No Sign of End Market Improvement, Avian Says

So, did you buy a PC this week? How about a cellphone? A printer? A switch? Probably not. And that could be a problem. The higher the current rally takes the semiconductor stocks–the SMH, the Semiconductor HOLDRS, is up 18.5 percent over the last seven sessions–the more you can expect the Street to dig into the question of whether there has been any real change in demand beyond inventory restocking.

Deep Discounts Fail to Stem LCD Panel Supply Glut

Despite deep discounts in stores, liquid crystal display inventory still far outweighs demand. Even though there are rumors of the Taiwanese government encouraging mergers between panel makers, reduced capacity for production would be unlikely to result–and the glut will most likely continue.

Palm Shares Tumble; Morgan Keegan, Avian Downgrade

Analysts at Avian Securities and Morgan Keegan downgraded Palm stock this morning, prompting a sharp downturn in shares. Reasoning includes the conjecture that smartphone sales will be down for the next few quarters. This is certainly true for the Palm Centro, and the Treo Pro and Treo 800w may not even make it to AT&T and Verizon stores in time for the holiday season. Early demand for the BlackBerry Bold, however, appears to be “robust.”
