It turns out that people responding to our poll about whether they were buying an iPad 3 — which Apple is unveiling this coming week — are overwhelmingly planning to fork over the dough for a new one.

Nearly 70 percent of those who answered said they would be buying the latest iteration of the popular tablet device, while 17 percent said they were sticking with their old one.

Only 11 percent used a competing tablet — powered by Google Android or Amazon Kindle.

And about 4.5 percent of respondents said that they had not decided, but were looking forward to the last “Twilight” movie, now that Bella finally has her fangs as a newborn vampire with a newborn baby, too.

Thus, many want a bite of the latest Apple, but are definitely not Twihards.

Here’s the poll again, if you want to add your vote:

Can a Hollywood star sell online consumers on a healthier lifestyle for them and their kids?

From the Web 1.0 Matt Damon-Ben Affleck debacle to the stunt-casting of Justin Timberlake as a Myspace impresario and everything in between, I have been more than dubious about any online effort by a celebrity.

Not surprisingly, it is usually a lot of special effects but little in the way of substance, from an entrepreneurial point of view.

So it was nice to be actually impressed by actress Jessica Alba’s fledgling effort to break into online commerce, via a new site called the Honest Company.

Using an interesting online subscription model and aimed at the modern mom, Honest sells its own private-label, eco-friendly and hipster baby diapers and biodegradable wipes, as well as organic bath/skin care and green cleaning products.

Alba, who is Honest’s president and one of its co-founders, was inspired to bootstrap the start-up after having kids and being confused as to how to find nontoxic products for them in a marketplace of questionable offerings.

Thus, she and Christopher Gavigan, author of “Healthy Child Healthy World,” hooked up with an experienced entrepreneur — Brian Lee, co-founder of ShoeDazzle and LegalZoom — to create Honest, which just launched.

Selling its own products using a monthly “bundle” model differentiates Honest from comparable sites, such as Gwyneth Paltrow’s GOOP, which focuses on classy recommendations of a wide variety of similar fare.

Right now, the online-only Honest effort is using Alba’s high profile and online clout — many millions of fans and followers on social sites like Facebook and Twitter, for example; and also viral marketing, via mommy bloggers — to get noticed.

But the proof will be if Honest can keep its customers coming back every month for more, as it expands its line. (So far, the reviews of the products have been raves, such as this one from salt & nectar.)

Here’s Alba talking about Honest with Lee, in a video interview at the company’s Santa Monica, Calif., HQ:

Earlier this week, I posted a teaser clip for “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part 1,” and now the entire movie trailer has been released.

It’s pretty much werewolves and vampire pregnancy and, well, the one where Bella and Edward finally …

Enjoy:

Investors are betting they’ve found the next Diapers.com, Etsy or ModCloth, but instead of being a niche marketplace for baby products, crafts or independent designers, this one’s focused on natural and organic products.

Accel has led a $3.4 million round of funding in Abe’s Market, with Index Ventures and other angel investors also participating.

The Chicago-based company was founded by Richard Demb and Jon Polin, who wanted to replicate the idea of a farmer’s market online by selling natural and homemade items and letting consumers get to know the merchants.

“The Web is a great place to learn about products. It’s like Whole Foods or Trader Joe’s, but they don’t sell online,” said Demb, who had previously started an all-natural popcorn distribution company.

Abe’s Market, which launched in October 2009, works with about 300 small businesses, ranging from a New Zealand company that sells organic nail polish, to a woman who was previously a private detective and now sells homemade jam, to three skater dudes who make all-natural play dough in a former funeral home.

Demb said in addition to the homemade and organic products, it introduces the merchants through online videos. “We are trying to be as innovative as possible. We want you to be proud to buy our products. Organic nail polish is something I want to tell my friends about. It’s not Revlon.”

Those willing to share their checkout cart with a few of their friends get 10 percent off their whole tab. Sales at the company have been growing 50 percent month over month.

The company, which has seven full-time employees and had raised only $1 million prior to this round, will use the money to expand the number of merchants it can support.

In a release, Accel’s Adam Valkin said, “We have seen tremendous growth in specialty e-commerce. With its fragmented base of passionate sellers and a fast growing population of motivated buyers, we see natural products as a particularly attractive category.”

As of right now, the only two people I have done FaceTime video phone calls with using Apple’s new feature for the iPhone 4 are All Things Digital’s Walt Mossberg and John Paczkowski.

While Patches’s kids–who hijacked the device–are very cute, and Walt likes to hold documents up to the screen to see if I can see them, this has gotten old rather quickly.

Which is why when I saw the terrific new video ads for the iPhone 4, I wished I had such quirkily touching Hallmark moments to share on my mobile device.

In one, called “Haircut,” a girl shows her boyfriend her new pixie haircut, which he pretends to like (but actually does not and neither do I). In another, titled “Smile,” which is even more effective, a father tries to make his daughter feel okay about her new braces (she looks great!).

Of course, it’s impossible not to do the baby ones, such as one (“Meet Her”) with granddad meeting his new granddaughter and the other, called “Big News,” about, well, the big news!

Awwwwww…, although nothing tops Lucy telling Ricky the big news on “I Love Lucy.”

In general, the ads are pretty effective–not too mawkish and very simple–delivering a clear product message about FaceTime, perhaps the iPhone 4′s most marketable feature.

Here are all the videos of the new ads, as well as the original longer one Apple (AAPL) used.

I also added, of course, the Lucy-is-pregnant video, as well as one of Walt and me using FaceTime for the first time at the iPhone 4 launch in June:

Rob Glaser, the founder of RealNetworks, is joining Accel Partners as a part-time venture partner.

Ironically, it was Accel that first funded the digital media pioneer, leading a critical $5.7 million round for RealNetworks (RNWK) in 1995.

Glaser said in an interview with BoomTown this afternoon that he will focus on digital media, as well as social and mobile start-ups, especially in Seattle and the Pacific Northwest area where he lives and where he founded RealNetworks.

As for becoming a VC after years of being an entrepreneur, Glaser (pictured here) said he was looking forward to being on the other side, especially at Silicon Valley-based Accel.

“I have never seen a more entrepreneurially-aligned venture firm,” he said. “And it is a really exciting time to be investing in a firm with that kind of high-density intelligence.”

The rest of Glaser’s time will be devoted to his board duties, as well as other political and charitable pursuits, including focusing on new baby: 10-day-old son, Max.

Glaser stepped down as longtime CEO of RealNetworks earlier this year, but has remained its chairman and owns more than one-third of its shares.

Although the company has struggled in recent years, RealNetworks has been a genuine and innovative pioneer in Web audio and video software and an early player in Web music services, although not everyone was a fan of the technology, because of its aggressive deployment.

The company was originally called Progressive Networks after Glaser’s political bent.

There have been several well-known entrepreneurs who have turned into VCs–most recently, Netscape Communications founder Marc Andreessen, who started a firm.

Here’s the official press release:

Rob Glaser, Founder of RealNetworks, joins Accel Partners

Palo Alto, CA, May 25, 2010: Accel Partners, a leading global venture capital and growth equity firm operating in Silicon Valley, Europe, Israel, China and India, today announced that Rob Glaser has joined the firm as a Venture Partner. At Accel, Rob will focus on digital media technology, social media, and mobile service investments.

Rob currently serves as Chairman of RealNetworks, which he founded in 1994. Rob has been a member of the Accel Partners family since it invested in Real(Nasdaq: RNWK) in 1995. In addition to his role as Chairman, Rob served as Real’s CEO from February 1994 through January 2010, leading the company from scratch to over $500 Million in revenue. Real went public in 1997.

Rob’s extensive experience as a digital and social media pioneer should prove to be an asset for Accel’s renowned and growing technology portfolio. Jim Breyer, a Managing Partner in Accel’s Palo Alto office, said “We have been delighted to work with Rob as an entrepreneur and CEO since 1995. His thought-leadership in the world of digital media and the consumer internet are well known, and we are very excited to have him join the Accel team in his new role as “Venture Partner.”

“After years of working with Accel as an entrepreneur, I look forward to working side-by-side with the Accel team to help identify companies which will benefit from the same kind of resources and partnership RealNetworks was so fortunate to have,” said Rob. “There are a wealth of promising startups in the world of digital media and I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Accel to help them succeed.”

Prior to founding RealNetworks, Rob worked for Microsoft for 10 years in a number of executive positions, including Vice President of Multimedia and Consumer Systems. Before joining Microsoft, Rob founded his first company, Ivy Research, in 1981 to make games for the newly launched IBM PC. Rob has also been an early stage investor in several successful technology companies including TellMe, PlanetOut, and SmileBox. Rob’s relationship with Accel is parttime, enabling him to keep time open for other engagements, including continuing to serve as Chairman of RealNetworks.

Rob is a 1983 graduate of Yale University, with a B.A. and M.A. in Economics and a B.S. in Computer Science.

While in Los Angeles for a brief second on Friday, BoomTown motored over to the Brentwood home of puckish entrepreneur Jason Calacanis to talk to him about his prank tweets the night before the introduction of the iPad last week.

On Tuesday night before the much hyped launch of the newest device from Apple (AAPL), Calacanis let loose with a series of over-the-top posts to Twitter, claiming he had been a beta tester for the iPad tablet computer for 10 days.

Unfortunately, these were assertions that some in the mostly mainstream media took too seriously.

So was it a jump-the-shark moment for journalism?

It was certainly sloppy, given that Calacanis is well known for slapping Apple around and that the secretive computer giant does not even give its own employees access to new products.

All this might have sent off alarm bells.

But he followed up with a series of tweets on a myriad of features of the new iPad–one nuttier, pricier and heavier than the next, such as a built-in HDTV tuner, a solar recharging pad and more.

For example: “Yes, there are 2cameras: one in front and one in back (or it may be one with some double lens) so you record yourself and in front of u.”

The problem was that a few big media outfits, including CNNMoney.com and WSJ.com, posted reports on the tweets without much of a raised eyebrow or first checking on their veracity with Apple or with Calacanis.

While anyone can get caught in a prank–and this was a pretty elaborate one pulled by Calacanis, who claims he was just trying to point out how ridiculous Apple hype had become–it’s still an instructive moment for journalism.

Here’s my interview with Calacanis, explaining it all (with a little shot of his new baby girl at the end), as well as images of his faux iPad tweets below:

Here’s a new video that has been making the rounds recently featuring “Roller Babies,” which is essentially a computer-generated bunch of babies on skates doing a rap number.

It’s a commercial for Evian Water, but BoomTown laughs every time I look at it anyway–probably because it reminds me of the most famous of all viral videos on the Internet.

I speak, of course, of the dancing baby from the television show, “Ally McBeal.”

Debuting in 1997, doing a bizarre boogie to “Hooked on a Feeling,” better known as the “Ooga-Chaka” song, the innovative video was an instant hit and is one of the first and best examples of the Web’s powerful virality.

I still heart that creepy little virtual nipper.

Compare and contrast:

Gone are the days when giving away your old stuff involved getting in the car and hauling bags to the local Salvation Army. Now, with a little Web know-how, you can find a number of ways to turn your trash into someone else's treasure.

Gone are the days when giving away your old stuff involved getting in the car and hauling bags to the local Salvation Army. Now, with a little Web know-how, you can find a number of ways to turn your trash into someone else’s treasure — from companies that send you prepaid shipping materials to people who will pick up the items from your house.

But even though you can use these services without leaving home, many of them still require you to go to a specific Web site — one you wouldn’t necessarily visit regularly. Sites like Gazelle.com and Venjuvo.com that pay cash for old electronics (or just recycle them) aren’t exactly online destinations.

Now one of those ways to unload your stuff involves a Web site you might visit many times a day. A site that has considerable sway in the social-networking world, where over 175 million active users go to share personal stories, photos and videos with hundreds of “friends.”

That’s right, I’m talking about Facebook. Tuesday, the social-networking giant announced its new Facebook Marketplace, Facebook.com/Marketplace, an integrated application powered by Oodle, known for its work with online classified ads. Marketplace uses colorful icons to represent four actions you can take in its app: Sell It; Sell for a Cause; Give it Away; and Ask for It.

Facebook Marketplace users can pick from 12 categories of listings, as well as buy or sell items for a favorite cause.

Oodle granted me early access to the Marketplace app before it became available Tuesday. A friend of mine and I were both set up with test accounts so that we could see one another’s fake Marketplace items and interact with one another within Marketplace; hundreds of Oodle employees also were testing this. (It was fun to see what people offer for sale when they’re just pretending, like one person who offered to sell everything on a colleague’s desk when he was out.)

Facebook’s original iteration of Marketplace started back in 2007, but was geared toward services like housing and jobs. The Oodle-powered Marketplace is merchandise-centric and includes more detailed organization, deeper integration with Facebook, and ways to buy or sell things to raise money for 1.7 million causes.

It still lacks a built-in electronic payment system, such as PayPal or Discover card, for exchanges between users or donations to causes. Instead, Marketplace encourages its users to exchange money however they choose, like traditional classified ads. And that could cause some obvious problems. For instance, if an item were sold for a cause, the seller could later donate the amount via credit card after closing a listing. But there’s no guarantee that the seller will actually do this. Oodle says it will listen to feedback from the Facebook audience and will try to integrate e-payments, if preferred.

Every posted item can include a location, description, category, photo and an explanation of why it’s in the Marketplace. Each item is reviewed by Oodle’s fraud-detection program, which looks for inappropriate content and suspicious activity, and a post could take up to 30 minutes to appear online after you submit it. My posts displayed almost instantly in the Marketplace newsfeed. Users also can opt to publish their posts to their Facebook profiles.

One example of Marketplace’s newly detailed organization comes in its browsing options. The old version of Marketplace had options to browse through jobs and housing, but not specific categories of items for sale. Now, users can browse through 12 categories of specific items including “Home & Garden,” “Baby & Kid Stuff,” “Tickets” and “Musical Instruments.” Items that don’t fit into these 12 categories are put into an “Everything Else” category.

Each item in Marketplace integrates with Facebook’s familiar format, like having its own online “wall” where questions and comments appear. If you’re looking for something in Marketplace by using the “Ask for It” option, you can recruit people to help you find the item by selecting from your list of friends, which works the same way people can suggest Facebook people to friends who might know them. Glancing at an item shows the seller’s profile photo, a link to all of the person’s listings and a brief history of his or her overall Marketplace activity, such as “3 listings in the last month.”

The integration of charitable causes into Marketplace gives supporters new ways to raise money for a favorite group like the World Wildlife Fund or Habitat for Humanity International. On the Marketplace home page, causes are displayed in a right-hand panel with a daily featured cause. This Featured Cause shows who else supports it and how many items you can buy or sell to support it.

Privacy is a natural concern in online marketplaces. By default, your posted listings are visible to any Facebook member in Marketplace. Users can opt to remain anonymous — they’re listed as “Facebook user is selling a bike,” for example. In that case, the only way someone can contact that person is by posting a comment and waiting for the seller to respond.

People who aren’t members of Facebook can see your listings by browsing and searching Marketplace, but they can’t post, comment or contact users. Unlike online marketplaces or services that can be used by anyone, Marketplace requires that users be members of the site to interact with sellers, which can be a downside. Plenty of people who aren’t on Facebook might not want to join the social-networking phenomenon just to offload the old couch gathering dust in the garage.

All user notifications — messages indicated in red at the bottom right of a Facebook page — will reflect friends’ activities in the Marketplace, unless you reset the notifications of the Facebook Marketplace app to not notify you. I suggest doing this, unless you really want to know about all your friends’ activities in Marketplace.

Four color-coded icons represent activities in Marketplace and are useful when reading lists of items at a glance: A green dollar sign represents Sell It and a red heart represents Sell for a Cause, for example. And details about each cause are integrated within Marketplace.

The Oodle-powered Facebook Marketplace is straightforward and well organized, and if you’re a Facebook user, its format will be familiar. If you’re not, and you’re looking for a way to sell or give items away for a charity or otherwise, Marketplace might encourage you to join the giant social network. But its payment program could be made a lot easier with electronic options.

Good thing we’ve resolved the global financial crisis, the global terror crisis, and the global warming crisis. Otherwise the blogosphere wouldn’t have had time to rail about a Web video ad campaign from Motrin over the weekend.

The story: Big pharma Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) has rolled out a Web clip (below) in which a snarky, knowing commentator gripes about the social pressure to “wear” babies in slings, carriers, etc–and the Motrin-ready aches that “wearing” a baby can cause. And in the last few days lots of blogger/Twitterers have agreed that:

The ad is offensive.

Motrin/JNJ doesn’t “get” social marketing.

Something should be done! Maybe a boycott.

How many bloggers/Twitterers are actually complaining about this? And are there enough to hurt JNJ, which made an estimated $1 billion in profit from Motrin each year? Mmmmmmaybe.

Tools like Google’s blog search and Twitter’s Summize search will tell you that, yes, some number of people are chattering about this on the Web. And as of 8:07 a.m. Monday, the Motrin.com site was down, whatever that means. But from what I can tell, only a few thousand people have actually seen the ad on Google’s (GOOG) YouTube. I’ve asked video watcher TubeMogul for info on the ad’s audience and will update when I get it.

But even if the outrage is widespread, it’s going to be hard make a connection between online chatter and real-world results. Otherwise Ron Paul would be the 44th President of the United States.

Meanwhile, at the risk of a cyber-stoning, let me say that I don’t think the ad–which seems to be aiming at the same set of people who buy very expensive strollers but feel a bit conflicted about doing so–is an outrage. And neither does the person who does most of the baby-wearing in my house.

I ran it by her in the twilight hours this morning, between feedings, and she shrugged: “It’s true.” Then she went back to sleep.

UPDATE: Twitter Moms unite! JNJ has apologized, and is very, very sorry. Kathy Widmer sends Forbes.com this mea culpa:

I am the Vice President of Marketing for McNeil Consumer Healthcare. I have responsibility for the Motrin Brand, and am responding to concerns about recent advertising on our website. I am, myself, a mom of 3 daughters. We certainly did not mean to offend moms through our advertising. Instead, we had intended to demonstrate genuine sympathy and appreciation for all that parents do for their babies. We believe deeply that moms know best and we sincerely apologize for disappointing you. Please know that we take your feedback seriously and will take swift action with regard to this ad. We are in process of removing it from our website. It will take longer, unfortunately, for it to be removed from magazine print as it is currently on newstands and in distribution.”

Lesson: Carping on Twitter does indeed work. Sometimes.

While BoomTown can be a bit, shall we say, sharp-tongued about Yahoo (YHOO), the company Jerry Yang co-founded, when it comes to anyone’s baby we go all sentimental.

Thus, everyone at AllThingsD.com extends its warm congratulations to Yang and his wife, Akiko Yamazaki (both pictured here), on the birth of their second daughter, which we found out about from–where else?–sources close to the company.

And, despite the current turmoil at his corporate baby, in the wake of Microsoft’s (MSFT) unsolicited takeover bid, I am guessing Yang must be over the moon with the new arrival.

(Memo to Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer: Give Yang a break and back off, at least for today, or you’ll have wearing-our-mama-hat BoomTown to answer to. A lovely floral arrangement or muffin basket would be a nice touch too.)
