			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Millennial Media, which is often considered the largest independent mobile ad network in the U.S., has raised $27.5 million.</p>
<p><img src="http://emoney.allthingsd.com/files/2011/01/millenniallogo-275x89.jpg" alt="" title="millenniallogo" width="275" height="89" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-1222" />The funding comes from Bessemer Venture Partners, Columbia Capital, Charles River Ventures and New Enterprise Associates (NEA).</p>
<p>To date, the Baltimore-based company has raised $65 million. But that hardly seems sufficient when fighting Goliaths like Apple and Google, which both made multimillion-dollar acquisitions last year in the space.</p>
<p>Previously, CEO Paul Palmieri said it was Millennial&#8217;s intention to stay an independent company, and therefore aim for an IPO. Is $65 million enough?</p>
<p>The funds will be used for acquisitions in 2011, and to invest in the company&#8217;s international business, which is considered smaller than its competitors&#8217;, such as Google&#8217;s. So far, it has built a team in London, and has begun to expand to the Asia-Pacific region.</p>
<p>Market share statistics are notoriously poor in the space, but in December, IDC estimated that Millennial was the largest independent mobile ad network at 15.4 percent, trailing behind Apple with 18.8 percent share and Google/AdMob with 19 percent share. Millennial&#8217;s share was estimated to be larger than Yahoo&#8217;s 10.1 percent share.</p>
<p>Millennial declined to give specific numbers, but said it achieved &#8220;operational profitability&#8221; in 2010, and tripled its revenues during the year.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The major wireless phone companies have begun building out the next generation of cellular phone systems, called 4G, or fourth-generation, networks. These networks are designed to offer much faster data speeds than the current speediest networks, which are called 3G.</p>
<p>Sprint is leading this race. Its 4G network already is available in 32 cities, and the company plans to add at least 14 more by year end. </p>

<p>Now, Sprint (S) is preparing to release the first 4G-capable phone in the U.S. on June 4. I&#8217;ve been testing it for about a week in two cities: Baltimore, where Sprint has fully rolled out 4G,  and Washington, D.C., where it is in the process of doing so.</p>
<p>This new phone, which also works on Sprint&#8217;s 3G network, is called the EVO 4G. It runs Google&#8217;s (GOOG) Android operating system and is built by HTC, based in Taiwan. It will cost $200 after a $100 mail-in rebate, with a two-year contract. Monthly fees will start at $80 for unlimited data and text messages, 450 talk minutes, and free calls to any mobile phone on any network. That&#8217;s a $10 hike from Sprint&#8217;s comparable plan for 3G phones.</p>
<p>My verdict: The HTC EVO 4G, when used on Sprint&#8217;s 4G network, offers the highest consistent downstream data speeds I have ever seen on a cellular network. It also has a number of other strong features: a front-facing camera for video chatting, and the ability to serve as a Wi-Fi hotspot (for an extra fee of $30 a month) that can simultaneously connect up to eight laptops or other devices to the Internet.</p>
<p>However, the data speeds I got in my tests weren&#8217;t spectacular, or anywhere close to the typical maximum Sprint claims, even in Baltimore, where the company&#8217;s 4G network is mature. And, when using 4G, the EVO&#8217;s battery runs down alarmingly fast. In my tests, it didn&#8217;t last through a full day with 4G turned on. The carrier, in fact, is thinking of advising users to turn off the 4G network access when they don&#8217;t think they need it, to save battery life. This undercuts the whole idea of faster cellular speeds.</p>

<p>In addition, the 4G advantage isn&#8217;t yet available in most cities. And the phone is heavy. Also, like other Android phones, it has limited storage for third-party apps—just 358 megabytes of total memory capacity of 9 gigabytes.</p>
<p>The phone itself is physically similar to T-Mobile&#8217;s HD2, a 3G phone also built by HTC. Like the HD2, it has a larger screen than on other smart phones—4.3 inches measured diagonally versus the more typical 3.5 or 3.7 inches. That makes the EVO, like the HD2, bulkier and heavier than most competitors.</p>
<p>However, in addition to its greater speed due to 4G, the EVO has several other features the HD2 lacks. Notably, it has that front-facing camera, the ability to connect to a big-screen TV using a modern connector port called HDMI, and a built-in kickstand to keep it upright for video viewing. In addition, because it runs Android and not the creaky Windows Mobile software used by the HD2, the EVO offers a much cleaner interface and many more available apps.</p>
<p>But the big deal about the EVO is that it can handle 4G, and I focused my tests on this. </p>
<p>Sprint claims that average users will see downstream data speeds of between 3 and 6 megabits per second on the EVO when 4G is in use. In my tests, in the heart of Baltimore&#8217;s popular Inner Harbor district, I averaged 3.4 mbps downstream over 4G, and just under 1 mbps upstream (the upstream speed is capped by Sprint at 1 mbps.) That downstream speed was double the EVO&#8217;s speed when using 3G, and the upstream speed was about triple.</p>
<p>In D.C., where the Sprint 4G network is still being completed and tuned, downstream streams varied widely, from under 1 mbps to a high of around 4 mbps. </p>
<p>The EVO was much faster than an iPhone using AT&#038;T&#8217;s (T) network, which in Baltimore never got to even 1 mbps downstream and in D.C. averaged about 1.8 mbps. Verizon&#8217;s (VZ) new Droid Incredible, another HTC Android phone, did well in both cities, averaging about 2 mbps downstream, but that was still slower than the EVO.</p>
<p>Sprint explains I never saw anything close to its top claimed speed by pointing out that both cellular reception and test methods can vary greatly, and that my sample was small.</p>
<p>I tested other features successfully. I used the EVO to provide Internet connectivity to a Lenovo ThinkPad and an Apple (AAPL) MacBook laptop simultaneously, and both performed speedily. I also could view photos and videos on my TV by connecting the EVO with a special cable. But I couldn&#8217;t test the video-chatting feature because the necessary software wasn&#8217;t ready yet.</p>
<p>If you are hungry for more cellular data speed, and live in a current 4G Sprint city, the EVO may be just what you need, as long as you&#8217;re prepared for short battery life.</p>

You may be out of luck: The telco has stopped rolling out its Fios TV service in new cities.</p>
<p>Verizon (VZ) quietly announced last week that it was done seeking out new markets for Fios, which means that cities like Boston, Baltimore and Alexandria, Va., won&#8217;t ever get access to the service. But the company will continue to expand its footprint in cities it&#8217;s already in, like New York.</p>
<p>The telco says it had always planned on winding down its expansion after spending $23 billion to upgrade its network. But its competitors are certainly treating this as a victory, and the halt will fuel speculation that Verizon will end up buying satellite broadcaster DirectTV (DTV) in order to compete with cable guys like Comcast (CMCSA) and Time Warner Cable (TWC) coast-to-coast.</p>

The other telcos have also been upgrading their networks to deliver more services, but they haven&#8217;t been as aggressive&#8230;</p>
<p>For Verizon, it&#8217;s still unclear whether the bet will pay off. Mr. Kula said that in markets that FiOS is available, it has achieved 25% penetration for television service and 28% for Internet.</p>
<p>Growth in FiOS appears to be slowing. In the fourth quarter, Verizon added 153,000 customers each for FiOS Internet and TV, which was down sequentially and from a year ago. In total, the company has 3.4 million FiOS Internet and 2.9 million TV subscribers.</p></blockquote>

<p>Although it has also been rumored to be an acquisition target, after the recent sales of <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20091109/google-acquires-admob-for-750-million-in-stock-the-press-release">AdMob</a> to Google (GOOG) and <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100104/exclusive-apple-to-buy-quattro-wireless-for-275-million">Quattro Wireless</a> to Apple (AAPL), mobile advertising firm Millennial Media is doing some buying of its own.</p>
<p>That would be its just announced acquisition of TapMetrics, a San Francisco-based mobile analytics firm.</p>
<p>Baltimore-based Millennial is one of the larger mobile ad networks in the U.S., but will surely need more scale in the current period of consolidation if it is to stay independent.</p>
<p>Millennial has raised just over $37 million in venture funding, including a $16 million round in November, from firms such as Bessemer Venture Partners, Columbia Capital, Charles River Ventures and New Enterprise Associates.</p>
<p>Terms of the transaction to buy TapMetrics&#8211;which has only raised a seed round&#8211;were not disclosed.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>With Google (GOOG) releasing 100,000 invites to test the beta version of the much-hyped Wave, one enterprising blogger decided to capitalize on all the buzz surrounding the new messaging and collaboration tool by selling his invite on eBay (EBAY).</p>
<p>Hagan Blount, a 30-year-old food blogger based in Baltimore, had been listening to the chatter about Wave and hatched the idea to auction his invite on eBay. &#8220;I figured there’s a whole lot of buzz. I wonder how many hits this would get?&#8221; he said.</p>
<p>Of course, Mr. Blount hadn’t yet received his invite, but he said that a software developer friend of his who did not wish to be identified had promised to procure one for him. Mr. Blount commenced the auction on Tuesday night, and by the time he had woken up at 6 a.m. Wednesday, the day that Google would be releasing Wave invites, his auction had already received 12,000 hits.</p>

<p>Back on April 7, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090407/tim-armstrong-starts-at-aol-his-entire-100-day-countdown-to-magic-memo">Tim Armstrong sent a memo to the long-battered troops of AOL</a> about a 100-day vision quest the new CEO and chairman was going on to find out &#8220;how to bring back the magic of AOL.&#8221;</p>
<p>It is now Day 86, and Armstrong is closing in on the end of a Where&#8217;s-Waldo commitment that he made then to visit all of the far-flung offices of the Time Warner (TWX) online unit globally.</p>
<p>More importantly, as it is almost over, Armstrong also has to make good on another promise he made in that memo he sent to the staff on his first day:</p>
<p>&#8220;The culmination of the 100-day process will end in Dulles with an All-Hands meeting in mid-July. At that meeting, we’ll review the feedback we’ve received&#8211;both internal and external. We’ll also discuss our strategic direction for the coming years, and highlight areas that will bring AOL and AOL properties into the next decade of digital leadership. Most importantly, we will set a course and focus all of our resources to make that course a success.&#8221;</p>
<p>BoomTown is eager to see what Armstrong has found out on his trip and what path it will ultimately put AOL on.</p>
<p>So far, the broad outlines of his strategy seem to center on expanding AOL&#8217;s content assets, strengthening its advertising network and getting out of businesses the company cannot compete well in, such as social networking.</p>
<p>What other pearls of wisdom Armstrong has gleaned are to still to be revealed, presumably.</p>
<p>His corporate version of &#8220;The Amazing Race&#8221; is certainly a novel idea, born at his first all-hands meeting in Dulles, Va., which used to be the world-wide HQ of AOL and remains its heart.</p>

<p>There, Armstrong (pictured here) joked to the crowd:</p>
<p>“I know that work goes on across the globe and, in the first 90 days, I’m going to try to visit every office we have and sit down and talk to every employee and that will be something that my wife has actually agreed to let me do so.&#8221;</p>
<p>Thus, spouse-approved, the former Google (GOOG) exec has circumnavigated the globe and has held meeting with employees in a wide range of places: Dulles; New York; Baltimore; San Francisco; Mountain View, Calif.; Toronto, Lancaster, Pa.; Denver; Hamburg; London; Paris; Bangalore; Dublin and, this week, Tel Aviv.</p>
<p>But it has not been all tourism, in search of innovation.</p>
<p>During this time, Armstrong has also dispatched employees and top execs, such as advertising head <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090429/exclusive-platform-a-head-coleman-out-at-aol-as-well-as-cfo-and-more-to-come/">Greg Coleman</a> and communications and communities head <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090526/people-networks-president-joanna-shields-leaving-aol/">Joanna Shields</a>, and hired a few key staffers of his own; <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090528/aol-spin-off-approved-last-night-by-time-warner-board-heres-the-inside-details-not-in-the-press-release/">announced a pending spinoff</a> of the company; and <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090611/back-to-the-future-aol-adds-local-with-two-acquisitions-including-ceos-start-up/">bought some stuff</a> (including a company he funded).</p>
<p>It will be interesting to see what comes next&#8211;after the 100-day gathering in Dulles, which should come sometime after Armstrong&#8217;s July 15 deadline, of course.</p>

The company lit up only Xohm in Baltimore today, fulfilling its promise to have the service up and running by the end of September. That said, it&#8217;s still nearly a year late.</p>
<p>Still, it sounds promising. With downlink speeds in the 2-4Mbps range, Xohm is about twice as fast as current cellular broadband networks. Sprint&#8217;s service plans include a $25 monthly home subscription, a $30 &#8220;on-the-go&#8221; plan and a $10 day-pass program. All three require a PC card or modem and a subscriber agreement permitting Xohm to &#8220;use <a href="http://www.xohm.com/en_US/xohm-policies/acceptable-use.html#aup_2b">various tools and techniques designed to limit the bandwidth</a> available for certain bandwidth-intensive applications or protocols, such as file sharing.&#8221;</p>
<p>So much for that <a href="http://venturebeat.com/2008/02/21/sprint-to-open-its-xohm-wimax-still-faces-hurdles/">&#8220;open network&#8221;</a> promise. Well, at least Xohm is up and running, right? Sprint Nextel (S) first announced plans to deploy a nationwide WiMax network in August 2006.</p>

<p>This is a video that is getting a lot of play, which shows a really agitated policeman haranguing a 14-year-old kid, who was skateboarding at Baltimore&#8217;s Inner Harbor.</p>
<p>The officer&#8211;a 17-year veteran named Salvatore Rivieri&#8211;went verbally ballistic without, as you will see, a whole lot of cause from the boy, who was pretty well behaved and exhibited very minor lip. Calling someone &#8220;dude&#8221; is not really deserving of the rage he got in return from the policeman.</p>
<p>While it is not known what went on right before this video and most cops do not act like this, it is pretty appalling and a perfect example of chronicling bad behavior all over using the powerful tool of viral online video.</p>
<p>The person who took the video and posted it on YouTube is unknown as yet, but has a lot of guts to keep rolling, until he or she was almost found out.</p>
<p>Rivieri has been suspended, <a href="http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/local/baltimore_city/bal-te.md.officer12feb12,0,2252685.story">according to the Baltimore Sun</a>.</p>
