Video: GroupMe Dudes Talk Group Messaging Phenom (and Drink Beer at the Same Time)

If you had to pick the hotsy-totsy start-up to win the media darling of South by Southwest award for 2011–following in the precious footsteps of Foursquare and Twitter from years past–it would probably have to be GroupMe. Here are the co-founders of he group messaging/conference call/locations/photo sharing service enjoying their day in the sun–quite literally, at their free grilled-cheese-and-beer giveaway this weekend in Austin.

Cash Isn't King–Liquidity Is

Weekend Update 05.01.10–The iPhonetoberfest Edition

A BoomTown Bier-Trinken Visit to the Gourmet Haus Staudt, Home of iPhonegate! (Can You Say Oktoberfest in April?)

When BoomTown was kibitzing with SurveyMonkey CEO Dave Goldberg about where to meet up this week for a chat to catch up, we decided to forgo the obvious and instead choose the complete Silicon Valley cliche of the moment. Destination: Redwood City and the now-infamous Gourmet Haus Staudt. As in, the the beer garden behind the German grocery store where the iPhone 4G prototype was snatched from a birthday-celebrating Apple engineer by person still unknown and sold to the now-police-shookdown Gizmodo gadget site. Here’s our Gemütlichkeit travelogue!

QOTD: Prost!

“I recently read in the news that you lost a very special phone at a German beer bar in California. We all know how frustrating it can be to lose personal belongings, especially when it is such a unique item.

At Lufthansa we also noted with great interest your passion for German beer and culture….Therefore we would love to offer you complimentary Business Class transportation to Munich, where you can literally pick up where you last left off.”

Lufthansa spins a bit of clever PR from this week’s iPhone prototype debacle.

Kool-Aid Guy Too Harsh? Then How About These Visual Metaphors for Twitter's $1 Billion Valuation!

Earlier today, BoomTown wrote a tongue-in-cheek post to depict what I thought of the $1 billion valuation that Twitter recently got from investors. It was meant all in fun, as poking holes in the frothy atmosphere around the microblogging hottie is kind of an easy layup. But someone on Twitter called my use of an image of the Kool-Aid pitcher man as “harsh,” and I got several other emails from those who think bubble-investing is dandy! So, in the interest of fairness, here are some other visual choices for a metaphorical depiction of the amazing valuation.

Tablet Schmablet: How About a Mud PC?

The new Wondertablet the guys at Gizmodo showed off last night looks cool. But you can’t actually touch one right now unless you know someone very connected at Microsoft. But you know what you can touch? Today? A PC you control by shoving your hands in a box full of mud. All you have to do is get yourself to Gizmodo’s awesome gadget gallery in New York during the next few days.
