<p>Asana, the high-profile group collaboration start-up founded by former Facebook execs, is moving out of private beta after a year, and will launch to the general public.</p>
<p>Currently in use by thousands of users at hundreds of beta companies, Asana said it will now put its efforts at tweaking the product to a wider test.</p>
<p>In Sanskrit, &#8220;asana&#8221; means &#8220;sitting down,&#8221; and refers to strong but relaxed postures in yoga, presumably so frustrated workers can achieve a digital form of nirvana.</p>
<p>The product can be used for free by teams of fewer than 30 users.</p>
<p>&#8220;Our beta users have helped us in shaping our prioritization in the workspace,&#8221; said Asana co-founder Dustin Moskovitz.</p>
<p>Moskovitz said that the company &#8212; which <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20091124/asana-gets-9-million-no-its-not-yoga-stance-its-a-new-start-up-from-former-facebookers/">raised $9 million in venture funding</a> two years ago, and $1 million before that from Benchmark Capital, Andreessen Horowitz and angel investors &#8212; is not in need of more funds and will not yet release a paid product. </p>
<p>Co-founder Justin Rosenstein added that one future direction will be the growth of the mobile application arena for Asana, which already has offerings.</p>

<p>The road to rock stardom used to begin with a pawn shop window, a beat-up six string, and mom&#8217;s garage &#8212; or at least that&#8217;s how the song goes.  </p>
<p>But <a href="http://getinstinct.com" target="_blank">Instinct</a>, a stealthy start-up based in New York, is hoping to add &#8220;Web browser&#8221; to the list of future-rockstar prerequisites. </p>
<p>That&#8217;s because the company is building a full-fledged instrument training tool that runs entirely in a browser window.</p>
<p>The company&#8217;s first Web app, Instinct for guitar, has been designed to be very simple, at least for the budding musician. </p>
<p>Users log in, pull out their own guitar and play along with the digital lessons presented on screen. </p>
<p>The whole thing is very visual, with deftly simple animations of fingers, strings and fretboard, all designed to take a potential player through the motions of learning a new riff. </p>
<p>The kicker is that Instinct is one of very few teaching tools that can also listen to what&#8217;s being played and provide live feedback.</p>
<p>Founders Blake Jenelle and Brian Stoner started building the project about six months ago, hoping for a tool that was not complex. &#8220;Anyone could open up and shortly be playing guitar,&#8221; Jenelle said. </p>
<p>Today, Instinct is far enough along to be raising a seed round of capital and counts Gabriel Weinberg, founder of DuckDuckGo, among its early investors.</p>
<p>If the concept behind Instinct&#8217;s app sounds vaguely familiar, it may be because of an Apple iOS app <strong>AllThingsD</strong> covered called <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110415/early-adopter-rock-prodigy-wants-you-to-be-a-real-life-guitar-hero/" target="_blank">Rock Prodigy</a>, that used a sort of Guitar Hero-like interface for teaching similar skills. </p>
<p>Instinct is similar in that its developers have also solved the pitch detection problem, Jenelle said. </p>
<p>Pitch detection is what makes these teaching tools smart, and lets them listen to and differentiate among the various notes a guitar can play. </p>
<p>But just as Instinct&#8217;s similarities to Rock Prodigy may make it a viable competitor, there is a key difference. </p>

<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re looking to tackle the problem of listening to [a user] play, and creating a lesson from that,&#8221; said Jenelle. &#8220;That way users will be able to take any audio and have Instinct create a lesson for them.&#8221; </p>
<p>This is a difficult problem in computing. </p>
<p>And one of the major barriers to scaling apps like Rock Prodigy and games such as Rock Band lies in the difficulty of licensing content and converting it for use in the app or game. </p>
<p>And while other apps rely on expensive licenses and employing specialized labor to churn out lessons, Jenelle and Stoner are attempting to build Instinct to accumulate that precious content more quickly and, theoretically, more cheaply. </p>
<p>If it works, it will be a compelling argument for developing more broadly useable Web apps, rather than native apps, when crowd-sourcing content is part of the growth strategy. </p>
<p>The underlying need for content not withstanding, Jenelle thinks that good technology is just the barrier to entry in the market.  </p>
<p>Ultimately, he said: &#8220;This is all about usability. The market leader will be the product that is most usable.&#8221;</p>
<p>Instinct has no firm plans on when the app will launch out of closed beta.</p>
<p>Whether or not Instinct gets it right, I&#8217;d be willing to bet that the millennial generation&#8217;s Slash will hone his or her skills by the light of a laptop. </p>

<p>Imagine lifting the silver lid on a carefully prepared, elegantly plated and perfectly seasoned culinary masterpiece, only to realize &#8230; your dog is pawing at your leg, begging for a bite.</p>
<p>That experience, or something like it, is precisely what the new start-up Kitchit is trying to bring to its users&#8217; homes.</p>
<p>Launching today, in invite-only beta, the Web service allows anyone with a credit card to book a top-tier chef to prepare the meal at their next dinner party.</p>
<p>The company, which was part of Stanford&#8217;s StartX incubator program, just finished raising a seed round of funding. The value of the round is undisclosed, but it counts super-angel Dave McClure among the early investors.</p>
<p>The three founders &#8212; CEO Brendan Marshall, CTO George Tang and Chief of Product Ian Ferguson &#8212; came together months ago to build a business around the idea of &#8220;democratizing fine dining,&#8221; said Marshall.</p>
<p>Buzzwords aside, Kitchit is opening up what was a previously gray market of transactions made by foodie insiders &#8212; or people who happened to have the connections necessary to find chefs who were looking to make extra money cooking outside the confines of their primary jobs at high-end restaurants.</p>
<p>With Kitchit, even a fish-stick aficionado can arrange for such a meal.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s the exact same kind of hidden economy that companies like Airbnb have built a business on disrupting.</p>

<p>But what does this new opportunity mean for the user/eater?</p>
<p>Potential diners visit <a href="http://kitchit.com" target="_blank">Kitchit.com</a> and pick from a stable of preapproved chefs &#8212; about 40 at last count &#8212; who will prepare their haute cuisine in the client&#8217;s home for any number of guests.</p>
<p>Kitchit takes care of billing, scheduling and making the connection with the chef, taking a cut of the payment.</p>
<p>The end result, said Ferguson, is &#8220;a five-star meal cooked for you and your guests in your home, for less than you would pay in a restaurant.&#8221;</p>
<p>And while the prices fluctuate with the cost of ingredients and demands of individual chefs, Ferguson&#8217;s math does seem to hold, even if it doesn&#8217;t promise an enormous bargain.</p>
<p>He explained that the average per-plate cost of a Kitchit dinner party is somewhere between $50 and $100.</p>
<p>Still, being able to eat at home and drink wine without a restaurant&#8217;s precious liquor markup must mean some savings, right? </p>
<p>While it&#8217;s tempting to draw an immediate correlation between Kitchit and a company such as Airbnb, CEO Marshall insisted the two were after different markets.</p>
<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re really more like NetJets for now,&#8221; he said.</p>
<p>Beyond the initial focus on high-end dining, Kitchit faces some sobering costs of scaling that Airbnb doesn&#8217;t.</p>
<p>For one, the cost of onboarding new chefs is high.</p>
<p>Ferguson noted that many chefs &#8220;don&#8217;t do a great job of writing their own bios, and few have enough high-quality photos of dishes they&#8217;ve prepared &#8212; but that&#8217;s also exactly why Kitchit can succeed.&#8221;</p>
<p>Kitchit, in a sense, has to serve two masters, at least according to Ferguson.</p>
<p>&#8220;Our chefs need to see value in using Kitchit, as well,&#8221; he said. &#8220;It has to make their lives easier, and make it possible for them to make extra money more reliably than other methods.&#8221;</p>
<p>And while the eating public never sees it, Kitchit provides a management interface and a host of other services to chefs who book events using the platform. </p>
<p>Kitchit has also started negotiating bulk deals on certain expensive ingredients, such as caviar, so that it can drive the cost of dinner parties down further.</p>
<p>As for what&#8217;s next, its founders said the company will spend its time and money growing the stable of chefs and expanding to other markets.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s in addition to plenty of &#8220;delicious business development meetings,&#8221; said Ferguson.</p>
<p>The trio of well-fed founders recently sat down for a fairly lengthy video chat about the launch of Kitchit and the difficulties of building a tech business that sells such an analog service:</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Online shopping is quick and easy if you know what you&#8217;re looking for, or only have to decide between a couple of products. But it can get tedious and time-consuming if you&#8217;re making a purchase that requires lots of comparisons over multiple sites.</p>

<p>So, I&#8217;ve been testing Digital Folio, a new, free software product to be announced next week. It&#8217;s a browser add-on that lets you save and view potential product choices in a single place, and quickly see how their prices compare among some major online retailers.</p>
<p>You just drag links to products that interest you into a sidebar right alongside your Web browser. This module stays with you regardless of what website you&#8217;re viewing, and its contents can be shared with friends.</p>
<p>Best of all, for certain kinds of products from certain merchants, the sidebar will almost instantly show price comparisons for the same item from other online stores—even if you aren&#8217;t viewing the other stores&#8217; websites. If you decide to buy an item, you just click on its link in the sidebar, and you&#8217;ll be taken to the retailer&#8217;s site, where you can place your order as you normally would.</p>
<p>Digital Folio is labeled as a beta, or test, version. But, in my tests, I found that, despite some limitations and rough edges, it&#8217;s a powerful piece of software that I believe could save shoppers both time and money.</p>
<p>Its maker, a small startup from Denver of the same name, has been showing and testing Digital Folio for awhile, but finally feels it&#8217;s ready for wide use. You can try it now at digitalfolio.com. The company makes money by getting a small cut of purchases made by Digital Folio users at partner online merchants.</p>
<p>Before getting into the details, it&#8217;s important to lay out three key limitations of Digital Folio today. First, while it can save potential choices for any kind of product from any site, Digital Folio only generates automatic price comparisons when you save product listings from its five online retail partners, which it calls &#8220;Smart Retailers.&#8221; These are Amazon, Best Buy, Target, Wal-Mart and Sears. </p>
<p>Second, even at the partner retail sites, Digital Folio&#8217;s price comparison feature works for only 13 categories of items, all of them electronic products or appliances. These include cameras, computers, TVs, printers, refrigerators, dishwashers and microwaves. Oddly, two of the hottest such product categories—smartphones and tablets—aren&#8217;t included now in the price-comparison feature, but the company is planning to add more products.</p>
<p>Third, it only works with the two most popular Web browsers: Internet Explorer on Windows and Firefox on either Windows or Macintosh. And you&#8217;ll need relatively recent versions of the browsers and the computers&#8217; operating systems. I tested it using the latest versions of the two browsers on the latest versions of Windows and the Mac OS.</p>
<p>Mobile versions are planned in the coming months for Windows Phones and Apple mobile devices, with an Android version coming later.</p>
<p>There are other comparison-shopping products, but none that work like this.</p>
<p>Digital Folio&#8217;s sidebar has two main sections, marked by tabs at the top. One called My Folios stores your lists of possible purchases. These can be divided into sections, or folios, for different products. For instance, in my tests, I set up folios for cameras, laptops and TVs. Each folio can also have sections, like laptops with screens in a certain size range.</p>
<p>The second tab is called Compare, and it provides the varying prices at the five partner merchants, though these prices don&#8217;t yet include shipping and handling costs.</p>

<p>Here&#8217;s an example of how it worked for me in my tests. While shopping for a pocket-size digital camera, I noticed on Amazon a certain Canon Powershot model. So I dragged its link into the Digital Folio sidebar. It was $129 on Amazon, but Digital Folio immediately advised me that Sears had it for about $113, and Wal-Mart for $119. It also listed higher prices at other of its partner merchants.</p>
<p>An even more interesting thing happens when you go to a retailer&#8217;s page that lists many items in a category, say a page at Amazon that lists TVs. The Compare tab starts pulsating and, in seconds, it generates a list of all the items on the page, along with prices at the other partner merchants. </p>
<p>In my tests, this allowed me to see that a certain Samsung model was cheapest at Amazon, but a Vizio model that also caught my eye was a lot less at Wal-Mart.</p>
<p>Unlike items you&#8217;ve deliberately dragged into Digital Folio, these instant comparisons at list pages don&#8217;t stay in the sidebar. They disappear when you navigate away from the page. But they&#8217;re amazingly dynamic. For instance, if you narrow down the selection on the list page by, say, brand, size or price, the Digital Folio list with price comparison changes along with it.</p>
<p>So what are those rough edges I was talking about? Well, I found setup to be clumsy on Internet Explorer, requiring multiple steps. I also much preferred using the product on Firefox, because, when you click on an item in the sidebar to revisit its original page, that page opens in a tab. By contrast, in Internet Explorer, it opens a new window and has to slowly reload the Digital Folio sidebar.</p>
<p>Also, you can&#8217;t drag an item directly into a folio in the sidebar. Instead, you have to wade through a dialog box to choose the folio where it should reside. And you can&#8217;t automatically, or rapidly, set up a new folio for a new category of item you find on a site; you have to first manually establish a new folio.</p>
<p>The product also doesn&#8217;t automatically refresh itself on one computer, if you&#8217;ve made changes to your folios on another. And it crashed Firefox repeatedly on one of my test Macs, though not on another.</p>
<p>Still, despite its early limits and design drawbacks, I believe Digital Folio is a good start toward making complicated online buying decisions simpler.</p>

<p>Maybe because it is a Friday in August, it&#8217;s natural that the Apple iPhone 5 rumors would get jacked up again. </p>
<p>Today, it was an erroneous report that Apple would hold a media event on Sept. 7, which was soon countered by <a href="http://www.loopinsight.com/2011/08/12/apple-will-not-hold-iphone-5-on-sept-7/">another post by Jim Dalrymple of The Loop</a> that said the company would not.</p>
<p>The second is the right one, because &#8212; as John Paczkowski <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110801/new-iphone-in-october-not-september/">has previously written</a> &#8212; October is when Apple plans to launch its next-gen iPhone.</p>
<p>Several sources we have rechecked with today underscored that the later time frame &#8212; some had thought Apple would launch its latest products sometime in September, as they had done in previous years &#8212; was accurate.</p>
<p>There are always a myriad of rumors around the exact dates of basic events for Apple, a company which attracts an unusual amount of attention from consumers and the media, unlike any other tech company.</p>
<p>As we noted in our report, which many have also written about, &#8220;the iPhone 5 will use the faster A5 processor on which the iPad 2 runs, a Qualcomm dual mode GSM/CDMA baseband, and a higher resolution eight-megapixel rear camera.&#8221;</p>
<p>Apple will also unveil its <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110801/apple-announces-icloud-pricing/">iCloud offering</a> to consumers then too, which it has already released to developers in beta.</p>
<p>So for now, we&#8217;d like everyone to go back to their beach chairs and chillax to the haunting work of one of Apple&#8217;s favorite bands &#8212; U2 &#8212; called, of course, &#8220;October&#8221;:</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Anyone who has ever tried to dial in to a conference call on a smartphone knows what a pain it can be.</p>

<p>Most phones let you click on a number and dial it automatically, but that&#8217;s not enough when you have to remember a dial-in number, passcode and maybe even a pin number. </p>
<p>Well, if you have a BlackBerry, now there&#8217;s an app for that.</p>
<p>On Friday, Research In Motion is launching a beta of a program specifically aimed at solving this problem. BlackBerry Mobile Conferencing, which works on phones running BlackBerry OS 5.0 or later, allows users to both set-up and dial-in to conference calls via their BlackBerry.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s a smart move that plays to the core of RIM&#8217;s user base&#8211;the corporate set.</p>
<p>The program integrates with the BlackBerry calendar app. When it is time for the conference call, a screen pops up that allows a user to dial-in without having to remember all the various numbers. Even better, if you are dropped from the call, you can also reconnect with just a single click.</p>
<p>Now, if they could just do something about that annoying hold music.</p>

<p>As it gets ramped up for a wider launch, Asana, the high-profile workplace collaboration start-up founded by top former Facebook execs, has hired former SolarWinds product strategy exec <a href="http://www.linkedin.com/in/kennyvanzant">Kenny Van Zant</a> in a &#8220;COO-type of role.&#8221;</p>
<p>Van Zant, who will be Asana&#8217;s first business-side hire, has also worked at a variety of tech companies, including Cisco.</p>
<p>Co-founders Dustin Moskovitz and Justin Rosenstein remain at the top of the leadership at the productivity software company, which&#8211;perhaps in keeping with its yoga-style name&#8211;does not have official titles.</p>
<p>But Van Zant will essentially fulfill the COO role, focusing on bringing Asana to the enterprise market in a socially-fueled, &#8220;bottom-up&#8221; approach.</p>
<p>&#8220;We now have a great product and are ready for our next phase of bringing it to the market,&#8221; said Moskovitz, in an interview this afternoon with BoomTown. &#8220;While Justin and I continue to work on product and engineering, Kenny will be the driver of that launch.&#8221;</p>
<p>Specifically, in a blog post today, Moskovitz wrote:</p>
<p>&#8220;Kenny will be leading functions outside of product and engineering, and serve as a key driver for Asana&#8217;s marketing and corporate strategy.&#8221;</p>
<p>Asana, which is aimed at helping people work on projects together in groups, is now in private beta.</p>
<p>It tackles the often unexciting, but very large and problematic, workplace collaboration and communications software market.</p>
<p>In Sanskrit, “asana” means “sitting down” and refers to strong but relaxed postures in yoga, which presumably means the product will help frustrated workers achieve a digital form of nirvana.</p>
<p>The San Francisco-based start-up, which <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20091124/asana-gets-9-million-no-its-not-yoga-stance-its-a-new-start-up-from-former-facebookers">has raised $9 million</a> in venture funding from Benchmark Capital and Andreessen Horowitz, now has 15 employees.</p>
<p>Asana had previously garnered just over $1 million in an angel round, which included a spate of Silicon Valley bigwigs.</p>
<p>Still, it has not, thankfully, received the intense hype of other innovative start-ups from former Facebookers&#8211;<em>hello, Quora!</em></p>
<p>That said, many who are using Asana think it will make a huge splash as it is rolled out and attempts to bring consumer-style tools to the workplace.</p>
<p>There are, of course, a range of companies doing this in different ways&#8211;from Jive to Yammer to LinkedIn and to a variety of cloud-based enterprise efforts by Google and Microsoft.</p>
<p>In an interview, Van Zant said the time was ripe for big changes in the way enterprise-aimed products were bought and sold.</p>
<p>&#8220;I will be focused on selling our enterprise software product from the bottom up, rather than targeting the CIO,&#8221; said Van Zant. &#8220;It is clear the world of enterprise is being impacted by consumer behavior.&#8221;</p>
<p>While he does not start until Monday, Van Zant speculated that Asana&#8217;s free product offering will remain, with a premium version to come.</p>
<p>Benchmark&#8217;s Matt Cohler, who made the Asana investment for the firm and is on its board, said the time is right for such businesses aimed at enterprise transformation.</p>

<p>Yesterday, BoomTown paid a long overdue visit on the Mountain View, Calif., HQ of Mozilla, the unusual public-private company that makes the Firefox browser, to chat with its (relatively) new CEO Gary Kovacs (pictured here).</p>
<p>There is a lot to talk about with the new exec, especially the near-to-official launch of Firefox 4, the increasing coopetition with Google and its Chrome efforts and where Mozilla goes next (mobile).</p>
<p>Kovacs, in fact, has a deep mobile background, <a href="http://voices.allthingsd.com/20101014/mozilla-has-a-brand-new-ceo">having arrived in the late fall of 2010</a> to take over from <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100511/exclusive-mozilla-ceo-john-lilly-to-step-down-replacement-search-underway">John Lilly</a>, who moved on to a stint as a venture capitalist.</p>
<p>Before Mozilla, Kovacs worked on a range of products at Sybase&#8211;until after its purchase by SAP&#8211;and also on mobile and devices at Adobe. Before that, he played a key role at Zi Corporation, a company specializing in embedded software and services for mobile and consumer devices.</p>
<p>He&#8217;ll need all that expertise if Firefox is to do as well on mobile devices as it has in gaining market share on the desktop, an effort that has been challenged by a continual and intense effort at upgrade and improvement by No. 3 Google especially.</p>
<p>According to a recent poll, for example, Microsoft&#8217;s Internet Explorer holds the dominant 56 percent share, with Mozilla&#8217;s Firefox at almost 23 percent and Google at just above 10 percent. Apple&#8217;s Safari and Opera follow.</p>
<p>Of course, Firefox has been playing nicer with Chrome cousin Android, which is beginning to dominate the smartphone market and is moving aggressively into the tablet arena. In fact, Mozilla just released a new beta in the marketplace for Google&#8217;s mobile operating system.</p>
<p>Still, some have fretted as Mozilla delayed its official release of Firefox 4 several times since last fall.</p>
<p>Nonetheless, by dislodging IE from its dominant market position, Firefox has proved not only that open-source projects can provide better software, but that it’s possible for a particularly well done one to become an everyday consumer application.</p>
<p>Despite its success, Mozilla still has to keep up its innovation and technical prowess. But given its unusual status as both a profit and nonprofit, it is hindered in that it is not likely to go public and shower its Silicon Valley employees with giant gobs of overhyped stock.</p>

<p>Sonos&#8211;the maker of innovative wireless music systems that has been boosted by its Apple iPhone and iPad Controller app&#8211;is set to roll out one for Google&#8217;s Android mobile operating system.</p>
<p>The Sonos Controller for Android will officially introduce the app at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona next week, although the Santa Barbara, Calif., company is announcing it today.</p>
<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s a no-brainer,&#8221; said Sonos CEO John MacFarlane in an interview with BoomTown yesterday. &#8220;It basically doubles our market space.&#8221;</p>
<p>The free app allows you to control Sonos&#8217;s various players wirelessly with a smartphone or tablet.</p>
<p>The impact of the iPhone and the iPad on sales of its various devices has been clear enough, said MacFarlane, as registrations of the app have escalated.</p>
<p>&#8220;There is more usage of the smartphone, but tablets are clearly happening, said MacFarlane. &#8220;But I have the same view of both that these devices are the Holy Grail everyone has always wanted.&#8221;</p>
<p>The move to Android will take longer to beta test, he said, since its ecosystem has a plethora of unit types from a variety of handset makers.</p>
<p>The app will be out in March.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Call it a flair for the dramatic or a love of telling and hearing juicy stories. Whatever the reason, people have a tendency to talk more about their bad customer-service experiences than the good ones.</p>

<p>This week, I tested Tello (Tello.com), a new customer-service website and mobile app that encourages users to chime in on their customer-service experiences, good or bad. Businesses, or specific employees at those businesses, can be rated with a thumbs up or thumbs down and a detailed comment. </p>
<p>Tello was released in the Apple App Store this week, but I got special permission to test it early. It&#8217;s currently available for use at Tello.com, on other devices via mobile browsers at m.tello.com or as a native app on Apple&#8217;s iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. Tello&#8217;s founder and CEO, Joe Beninato, said an Android app is due out this spring.</p>
<p>At first glance, Tello seems to be another location-based service like Foursquare or Gowalla, which encourage people to &#8220;check in&#8221; while they&#8217;re at a specific place to find friends who are checked in there, or to earn badges and titles for checking in there more than anyone else. Broader review sites like Yelp let people comment on various aspects of a place or experience. But people using these services aren&#8217;t rating customer service specifically.</p>
<p>On the upside, Tello&#8217;s narrow scope means people know they&#8217;re reading solely about customer service, without hearing numerous details about other aspects of a business. </p>

<p>The downside to Tello is that it can be hard to sum up an entire experience without considering other factors involved. If someone visits the new Italian restaurant down the street and its ambiance and food are outstanding, yet the wait staff is deplorable, a thumbs up or thumbs down doesn&#8217;t tell the whole story. For expert complainers, or people who like more space for expressing their opinions, Tello may seem too succinct. Its app and home page display portions of comments along with user ratings, so if you waxed on for a thousand words about a hotel&#8217;s poor Wi-Fi, bad lighting and slow room service, most people wouldn&#8217;t see those remarks at a glance. </p>
<p>Part of Tello&#8217;s appeal is that it offers a peek in on customer-service experiences around the country, so before I flew to California this week I took a look at Tello to see what businesses are getting good ratings out there. Only a relatively small group of beta testers were using Tello when I was testing it, limiting the number of rated businesses. But this will improve as more people use the service.</p>
<p>The Tello app uses GPS to recognize a user&#8217;s location and then displays a list of nearby businesses; nearby, in this case, is defined as within two-tenths of a mile. If people type in the name of a business and search, this broadens the location range search to within five miles. </p>
<p>On a few occasions, including a trip to my Washington, D.C., neighborhood&#8217;s independent coffee shop, a Greek restaurant and a Potbelly Sandwich Shop, I came up empty handed when I looked for reviews of these places. Mr. Beninato explained this was because some aspects of the search engine weren&#8217;t finalized at the time I was testing, and in one case, I was too far away from the business. Sure enough, after a final update, I had better luck finding businesses. A business can be manually added to Tello by selecting a plus icon and typing in details including the business&#8217;s name and address. </p>

<p>As for rating individual employees, on most occasions, I didn&#8217;t think to ask the name of the person who helped me at the business so I could comment on their service. I did catch the name of a terrific waitress at the Greek restaurant because she signed the bill with a smiley face. In that case, I was able to make a specific comment about an employee, rather than a general comment about the restaurant. I gave Mara a thumbs up and commented she took time to make useful wine suggestions in the midst of a bustling evening with every table filled. The more I used Tello, the more I started to notice employees&#8217; names.</p>
<p>After using Tello over a period of time, each user builds up a personalized page of ratings, which is helpful for remembering which places are worth a return visit and which ones to avoid. Any Tello rating is, by default, instantly shared on the Tello.com site as well as to users of the app; it can be posted out to Facebook and Twitter in the same step.</p>
<p>Tello aspires to be more than the destination where happy customers go to cheer or wronged customers go to whine. An option on the screen where ratings comments are entered lets users request a reply from a business if they had a bad experience. When someone selects this option, Tello contacts the user via email and asks how he or she wants to be contacted by the business—email or phone—so the business has a chance to fix things. </p>
<p>Starting this spring, Tello plans to roll out new features aimed at businesses that will allow them to claim their business on Tello by going through a verification process. They will then be automatically notified of bad experiences so they can decide how to handle a customer&#8217;s problems. And in the future, customers who rate businesses might be able to receive coupons. </p>
<p>Another new feature due out this spring will let businesses add lists of employees for Tello users to see, which may help them remember who served them or how to spell an employee&#8217;s name. Employees who receive good ratings could be acknowledged and rewarded by their employers, motivating them to work harder.</p>
<p>Though Tello is just getting started, it could be an incredibly helpful service through which satisfied customers get to tell friends about their experiences—or disappointed customers get to complain with a chance of actually being heard. Just know that Tello&#8217;s thumbs up or thumbs down ratings don&#8217;t allow for much ambiguity. </p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Ngmoco CEO and Electronic Arts veteran Neil Young does not downplay the opportunity in front of him.</p>
<p>He&#8217;s building a network that he thinks can be as meaningful to today&#8217;s generation as MTV was to the rock &#8216;n&#8217; roll era.</p>
<p><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-1880" title="ngmocowithjapanese" src="http://emoney.allthingsd.com/files/2011/01/ngmocowithjapanese-275x96.png" alt="" width="275" height="96" />The opportunity doesn&#8217;t come around very often, he admits, but he believes we are at a tipping point, where games, mobile devices and high-speed networks will lead to a new entertainment channel, saying such moments &#8220;are infrequent, but when they do come along, a lot of value will be generated.&#8221;</p>
<p>Young&#8217;s plans were only accelerated three months ago after the game developer sold for $400 million to a company that is far from a household name in the U.S.&#8211;Japanese-based DeNA (pronounced D-N-A).</p>
<p>We caught up with Young at the company&#8217;s headquarters in San Francisco to understand how Ngmoco&#8217;s mission has changed, and to learn about what the two have in store for the U.S. market.</p>
<p>DeNA is a publicly traded mobile social network that has a market cap of $4.5 billion and annual revenues of $1.25 billion.</p>
<p><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-1876" title="mobagetown" src="http://emoney.allthingsd.com/files/2011/01/mobagetown.png" alt="" width="150" height="891" />The company has been on an acquisition spree over the past few months, buying U.S. mobile game-makers, like Icebreaker and Gameview Studios, along with making a handful of other U.S. investments.</p>
<p>In Japan, DeNA is known for its mobile-only social network called Mobage-town (pronounced Mo-bah-gay), which runs on lower-end feature phones and makes all of its money selling virtual goods within its network of games.</p>
<p>Now DeNA is looking to expand into the U.S., and to transition from feature phones to smartphones in Japan.</p>
<p>Ngmoco will become the backbone for both.</p>
<p>Ngmoco was spawned from the iPhone application boom, having received investments from Kleiner Perkins&#8217; iFund and, more recently, Google Ventures. It created iPhone games like We Rule, and We Doodle and Rolando.</p>
<p>Then, last summer, it played down the development of games in favor of creating a gaming platform, called the Plus Network. The network allowed players to log in to the same account across multiple games and to participate in leaderboards and awards. In other words, it was a social network of sorts.</p>
<p>Not very coincidentally, Young&#8217;s idea for the Plus Network was modeled after DeNA&#8217;s Mobage-town in Japan. He even presented it to investors that way in slides when raising money. The Plus Network will now become the basis for Mobage in the U.S. and Japan.</p>
<p>The network will be open to third-party game developers who are looking for a single log-in experience, a community of users playing within a social network and a monetization platform. It will run on Android because the platform is more open than Apple&#8217;s iPhone.</p>
<p>Already, Ngmoco has some traction.</p>
<p>It has signed a deal with Samsung to become its default Game Hub on all the Android phones and tablets, and it has 40 developers participating in a beta. Within the next two months, Ngmoco expects to launch &#8220;We Rule&#8221; on Android and to launch the fully integrated Mobage service in the second quarter.</p>
<p>One way to think about Mobage is a Facebook-like platform on top of mobile phones that companies like FarmVille&#8217;s Zynga could leverage. Young prefers to compare it to MySpace, except that MySpace failed to catapult itself from its leadership position on music to become a entertainment destination.</p>
<p>One stark difference between social networks on PCs and Mobage is that users won&#8217;t necessarily be playing with friends, but rather a network of game players you may or may not know. Young argues that&#8217;s a benefit: &#8220;It&#8217;s difficult to escape if everyone is watching you.&#8221;</p>
<p>If it sounds ambitious, it is.</p>
<p>But it&#8217;s something Young is comfortable with.</p>
<p>When Ngmoco originally launched, its first logo read ng:moco :) with a few Japanese characters written underneath. Roughly translated, the Japanese characters said &#8220;future entertainment company.&#8221;</p>
<p>Young said it was in Japanese for two reasons: It looked cool, and because it was too cocky to come out in say it.</p>
<p>Today, he doesn&#8217;t hesitate: &#8220;Now we have the chance to do it.&#8221;</p>
<p>Young has a set of three priorities: Launching and executing Mobage as a brand on Android; building a small number of games to show off the platform&#8217;s potential; and finally to move the Mobage platform from mobile to tablets, and then to the TV.</p>
<p>In a video interview, Young describes in more depth how Ngmoco could become the next MTV, and proves that he really did use the word &#8220;cocky&#8221;:</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Sundar Pichai, the man in charge of Chrome and Chrome OS at Google, is being aggressively courted by Twitter to be its next head of product, according to sources with knowledge of the situation.</p>

<p>However, added sources, Google is fighting hard to counter the Twitter offer, so Pichai could easily stay with his current employer. At Google, which he joined in April 2004, Pichai is a VP of Product Management.</p>
<p>If successful, the hiring of Pichai would be a major raid for Twitter, and mark its place next to Facebook as an up-and-comer in the race to entice away top Google executives.</p>
<p>More importantly, Twitter could use the product help.</p>
<p>The San Francisco microblogging company, which <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20101215/exclusive-twitter-raises-200-million-at-3-7-billion-valuation-adds-mccue-and-rosenblatt-to-board/">just raised a massive funding</a>, has done relatively little product development recently, in large part because its focus has been absorbed by overwhelming growth and infrastructure problems.</p>
<p>Pichai certainly fits the bill as a head of product for Twitter, given his job at Google. The well-regarded tech exec heads the Silicon Valley search giant&#8217;s high-profile Chrome browser and Chrome OS efforts.</p>
<p>Pichai was front and center at an <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20091119/a-first-look-at-googles-chrome-os-on-thursday">unveiling of Chrome OS plans</a> in November, and touted the Chrome browser&#8217;s 40 million users only a year after its debut in 2009.</p>
<p>But not everyone is so sanguine. Paul Buchheit, founder of Gmail (and FriendFeed) predicted a very short life for Google’s still-in-beta Chrome OS, noting&#8211;<a href="http://mobilized.allthingsd.com/20101214/gmail-founder-says-chrome-is-doome/?mod=ATD_search">on Twitter</a> in December&#8211;that he thought the product would be axed or fused with Android in 2011.</p>
<p>As Mobilized&#8217;s Ina Fried wrote at the time:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>Google originally hoped to have Chrome OS-based computers for sale this year, but has run into some delays. Last week, the company released a beta version of the software and <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20101207/google-shows-off-chrome-web-store/">distributed to testers an unbranded laptop</a> running the operating system. However, it&#8217;s worth noting that in doing so, Google has hardly made the strongest hardware case for the operating system, using a relatively bulky netbook with a reliable, but hardly power-sipping Intel Atom processor.</p>
<p>The idea of merging the two operating systems has some merit. Doing so would pair a top-notch browser with an ecosystem that already has a lot of applications and developers.</p>
<p>For now, the operating systems are distinct, with Android running hundreds of thousands of applications and used largely on phones, along with a few tablets, such as Samsung&#8217;s Galaxy Tab. However, Google VP Andy Rubin confirmed after his <a href="http://mobilized.allthingsd.com/20101206/googles-andy-rubin-dives-into-android/">appearance at last week&#8217;s <strong>D: Dive Into Mobile</strong></a> that the company is working on a new version of Android, known as Honeycomb, that is <a href="http://mobilized.allthingsd.com/20101207/backstage-at-d-mobile-googles-andy-rubin-/?mod=ATD_search">geared exclusively to tablets</a>. <p>Acer and a couple of other hardware makers have<a href="http://mobilized.allthingsd.com/20101129/acer-ceo-on-why-hes-waiting-on-android-tablets/"> said they plan to do Chrome OS netbooks</a> next year once the software is ready.</p></blockquote>
<p>If hired, Pichai would fill an open spot left by the departure of longtime Twitter VP of Product Jason Goldman, who <a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/20101209/help-wanted-twitter-seeks-product-direction/">stepped down</a> at the beginning of December.</p>
<p>The attempt to bring on Pichai to lead product brings into question former CEO Evan Williams&#8217;s role at the company. When he <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20101004/breaking-twitter-replaces-ceo-ev-williams-with-deputy-dick-costolo/">stepped down as CEO</a>, Williams said it was in order to focus on product strategy, and when Goldman gave up his position, many assumed Williams was the natural substitute.</p>

<p>While Pichai would be a strong choice for the job, he has not been an active user of the product.</p>
<p>Until recently, that is.</p>
<p><a href="http://twitter.com/#!/sundarpichai">Pichai&#8217;s own Twitter account</a> has a grand total of 118 tweets, with about a third of them posted in the last month.</p>
<p>Yesterday, in an <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20110107/live-twitter-ceo-dick-costolo-at-dces/">interview with BoomTown&#8217;s Kara Swisher at <strong>D@CES</strong></a>, Twitter CEO Dick Costolo said some product goals for Twitter included a better experience for passive users and a more &#8220;agnostic&#8221; experience across platforms.</p>
<p>Costolo also mentioned a new zero tolerance policy for infrastructure problems, and said that Twitter does not consider itself a &#8220;platform company,&#8221; but rather one that has APIs.</p>
<p>The Google-Twitter connection is strong, and not just on the we-want-to-buy-you front&#8211;Google has often cast its acquisitive eyes at Twitter and still does.</p>
<p>And many Twitter employees were formerly Googlers, although not all in the same era or area.</p>
<p>Costolo himself came to Twitter after being at Google, which had acquired his last start-up, FeedBurner.</p>
<p>Other former Googlers include many on Twitter&#8217;s product team, such as Othman Laraki and Elad Gil, who were product managers at Google Mobile Maps and Google Toolbar before joining Twitter through its <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20091223/twitter-now-one-acquisition-closer-to-improved-stalking/">acquisition of their geo start-up Mixer Labs</a>.</p>
<p>In addition, last year, Twitter <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090712/a-google-lawyer-waves-goodbye-lands-at-twitter/">nabbed</a> Google lawyer Alexander Macgillivray as its general counsel.</p>
<p>And, of course, Twitter co-founders Williams and Biz Stone had worked at Google after it bought Blogger. They created Twitter after they left the company.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s possible that Pichai leaving Google might have something to do with the company favoring the Android mobile operating system over Chrome OS, but seems more likely that the Twitter role would just be a compelling opportunity for him.</p>
<p>Twitter declined comment, and Google has not responded to an inquiry about Pichai.</p>

<p>Microsoft&#8217;s Internet Explorer browser is still the world&#8217;s most popular, but its dominance is being steadily eroded by competition from Mozilla, Google and Apple. Can a new, aggressive approach to privacy change that? Can Microsoft really protect users from tracking across the Web&#8211;and do users really care?</p>
<p>Dean Hachamovitch, who oversees IE for Microsoft as a corporate VP, gives Walt Mossberg an update on the browser wars.</p>
<p>Greetings! We&#8217;ll be starting shortly. If you were in the room right now with our select crowd, you would have just heard some Aerosmith. <p>An update on the state of the ATD empire, which is getting much bigger.</p>
<p>Walt brings on Dean Hachamovitch.</p>
<p>Dean, by the way, is wearing a black long-sleeve shirt that says &#8220;private&#8221; in big white letters. Hope someone asks him about it.</p>
<p>Ah, and Dean has a &#8220;private&#8221; shirt for Walt, too. We&#8217;ll get to privacy in a bit, it seems.</p>
<p>DEAN: Working on IE 9, in beta, downloaded over 20 million times. Most important is its performance. It&#8217;s amazingly fast. Also, it blurs the boundary between Web sites and apps. And also, some talk about privacy.</p>
<p>WALT: Okay, that was a nice ad. But please talk about reports that you&#8217;ve been eclipsed in Europe by Firefox.</p>
<p>DEAN: Yes, we used to have 90 percent market share back in the &#8217;90s. But now we look at how many people choose to use our most recent versions. &#8220;We are delighted that IE 6 market share is going down. We are delighted that IE 7 market share is going down.&#8221;</p>
<p>DEAN: And bear in mind how much the Internet is growing. &#8220;There are a lot of different factors. It&#8217;s a very complex situation.&#8221;</p>
<p>WALT: Okay, on to privacy. Safari used to have some kind of privacy feature, but that&#8217;s old. Then in IE 8, you introduced a new feature, not by default, which tried to extend that protection to other sites on the Web you traveled to.</p>

<p>DEAN: You were describing &#8220;over the shoulder privacy.&#8221; But we&#8217;re also concerned about tracking. There are two kinds of tracking: &#8220;Expected tracking&#8221; and &#8220;creepy stalking.&#8221;</p>
<p>Pandora and Amazon are expected tracking. You want them to know what you&#8217;re doing. But the important thing is that you have visibility and control, and you get benefits.</p>
<p>For instance, when I go to Amazon, they know that I bought Spice Girls and Fergie, and they tell me other stuff I should get.</p>
<p>WALT: Some of that tracking isn&#8217;t sophisticated enough.</p>
<p>DEAN: Anyway, creepy stalking is bad. Because consumers aren&#8217;t aware of what&#8217;s going on, and they don&#8217;t have control of it.</p>
<p>WALT: We don&#8217;t allow slides at our conferences usually, but we&#8217;re going to make an exception. Please show us some slides!</p>
<p> </p>
<p>Dean is showing people a monitor that shows you what cookies were attached to a certain NPR page, which includes tracking info that comes from Facebook integration.</p>
<p>Now a Fox News page with similar info.</p>
<p>A reminder that cookies, by the way, aren&#8217;t the only tracking info involved here. Also pixels, etc.</p>
<p>But even once you root around and look at the pixels and tracking info, you might not really understand what you&#8217;re looking at or who is behind them.</p>
<p>WALT: Microsoft is a big Internet advertiser and publisher. Don&#8217;t you do some of this stuff?</p>
<p>DEAN: Yes, and in addition to us and Google, etc, there is an amazing ecosystem of information brokers. There&#8217;s a huge industry around this.</p>
<p>WALT: So what&#8217;s coming?</p>
<p>DEAN: With the new rev of IE 9, first quarter of 2011, you&#8217;ll be able to &#8220;go to a Web page, click on a button and you&#8217;ll be protected from tracking.&#8221; Any Web page can do this.</p>
<p>It will block content on that page. It will be an open publishing platform.</p>
<p>WALT: Why would a publisher want to do this? They have a legitmate need to want to know things about you, to serve you better ads, right?</p>
<p>DEAN: We have a lot of interest from a lot of different organizations that want to make lists. Publishers, government agencies, consumer advocacy, etc.</p>
<p>WALT: So, I have to download a list from someone I trust to make this work. Will you maintain this list?</p>
<p>DEAN: No. People will find these lists the same way that they find other things on the Web they like. From Facebook, or friends, or wherever.</p>
<p>We think it&#8217;s important to have people exercise judgment in making these lists. The most important thing is that you go off to the Web and find one you have confidence in.</p>
<p>WALT: But why do I have to hope that I go to sites that have these buttons?</p>
<p>WALT and DEAN are trying to explain how the list and button combination will work. Frankly, I&#8217;m confused. We&#8217;ll have to circle back to this.</p>
<p>WALT: A cynical journalist might suggest that you&#8217;re embracing privacy and wearing a shirt because Firefox et al are eating your lunch.</p>

<p>DEAN: Paying Windows customers want a great experience that includes privacy, including through their browser. But another way to view people who use browsers is that they&#8217;re objects to be boxed and sold. We don&#8217;t believe that. We believe Windows customers should have a great experience with their browser.</p>
<p>WALT: As opposed to?</p>
<p>DEAN: Well, Chrome, for instance, is funded by advertising.</p>
<p>WALT: So is The Wall Street Journal.</p>
<p>DEAN: I think advertising is great. But be careful about connecting advertising with tracking. We have advertising customers, and we want them to be delighted. And we have Windows customers, and we want them to be delighted. We have a unique position on this that gives us an opporunity to lead.</p>
<p>WALT: All the other browsers have a privacy mode.</p>
<p>DEAN: But that&#8217;s for &#8220;over the shoulder&#8221; privacy, not tracking.</p>
<p>WALT: Some of this tracking stuff is very hard to block. Can you really protect a user from all of it?</p>
<p>DEAN: Good question. Flash, for instance, enables tracking &#8220;Flash cookies&#8221; and they&#8217;re inherent in Flash. Only way to turn them off is to turn Flash off.</p>
<p>WALT: So this won&#8217;t block Flash cookies?</p>
<p>DEAN: It will if you tell it to.</p>
<p>WALT: But that&#8217;s pretty extreme.</p>
<p>DEAN: Yes. We&#8217;re touching on the ambiguity to the consumer about what actually is important and worthwhile tracking, and what isn&#8217;t.</p>
<p>We want to help consumers make progress being in control, but it&#8217;s a work in progress. It&#8217;s happening in Berkeley and in Brussels.</p>
<p>WALT: Let&#8217;s switch gears. Some people, not mainstream people, are debating whether the future of entertainment and progress and productivity will be on the browser and in the cloud. Google is pushing that via Chrome OS, and they also have Android apps that store local cloud on the device. Where do you come down on that?</p>
<p>DEAN: It&#8217;s a great case of &#8220;and&#8221;&#8211;you&#8217;ll have local apps and cloud versions. Like with Office mail, etc. We&#8217;re doing work on speed and safety so you can feel more comfortable in the cloud. &#8220;I think it&#8217;s the best of both worlds.&#8221;</p>
<p>WALT: So not a religious issue? Just practicality?</p>
<p>DEAN: Yes.</p>
<h4 class="subhed">Questions and Answers</h4>
<p><strong>Q: What do you think of what the FTC says about privacy?</strong></p>
<p>DEAN: The paper they put out in December is a good framework. And they&#8217;ve responded positively to what we&#8217;ve put out. They&#8217;re in favor of self-regulation, and we&#8217;re eager to work with them. I&#8217;ve had conversations with them, and what they say makes sense.</p>
<p>WALT: You&#8217;ve been talking to competitors about working together on this?</p>
<p>DEAN: We&#8217;ve been talking across the industry.</p>
<p><strong>Q: Who is supposed to make banking, etc., more secure? This isn&#8217;t just about someone saying something on Facebook, but opening up the wrong window and having your bank account drained.</strong></p>
<p>DEAN: We take it very seriously. &#8220;Security is an industry issue. I have to say it that way, because anything that we can talk about here has multiple parties involved.&#8221; if your Facebook is hacked, was it using your banking password?</p>
<p><strong>Q: I&#8217;m talking about a national security issue.</strong></p>
<p>DEAN: There&#8217;s a lot of working going on within the industry, working with law enformecement, to make things more secure.</p>
<p>WALT: But since you have the biggest market share, there&#8217;s a lot of responsibility on you. What do you do about that?</p>
<p>DEAN: Well, one thing we do is put out updates every eight weeks, because things change.</p>
<p>But really, &#8220;the best thing you can do to remain secure is to keep all your bits updated&#8230;.That would make such a  difference.&#8221;</p>

<p><strong>Q: Firefox has plug-ins like AdBlock, that let you block ads. They seem to be effective at blocking things like beacons, too. Are they effective and can you do something analogous?</strong></p>
<p>DEAN: Add-ins require installation, etc. You need a list, too. But we&#8217;re building that functionality into IE, so you don&#8217;t need to download anything else. We&#8217;re also working with people who make lists for AdBlock Plus, and they&#8217;re eager to work with IE 9 as well.</p>
<p>WALT: But AdBlock blocks ads, too. You&#8217;re not going to do that, right?</p>
<p>DEAN: It comes down to the list. If a list author lists sites that involve ads, then they&#8217;ll go away, too.</p>
<p>WALT: So you could surf the Web without seeing ads?</p>
<p>DEAN: It depends on the list.</p>
<p>WALT: I do think ads are good, by the way. [Me too!]</p>
<p>DEAN: Right. &#8220;Ads are great!&#8221;</p>
<p>But this is one of the reasons the ad industry wants to create lists for this. So they can distinguish tracking from nontracking.</p>
<p><strong>Q: You&#8217;ve been talking about desktop browsers. Will these features come to mobile as well?</strong></p>
<p>DEAN: &#8220;We&#8217;ll be talking about our mobile browser very soon, and I&#8217;ll just smile, and you can infer from that.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>Q: How much more value does tracking really add to advertising?</strong></p>
<p>DEAN: Hard for me to answer that. Maybe the next time you have one of these things, you could have someone from the ad industry.</p>
<p>WALT: Good idea.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The same variety of apple has apparently been falling from trees all over Silicon Valley, hitting Web entrepreneurs on the head and inspiring them to create better ways to connect personal and professional social networks.</p>
<p>Beyond the directory-style LinkedIn, that could mean facilitating professional profiles on social sites, pushing job postings through networks, introducing contacts, soliciting referrals and sharing resources.</p>
<p>Part of the reason this idea has been so resonant with Web entrepreneurs&#8211;and investors too&#8211;is the trouble they&#8217;re having with hiring qualified people to work at their own companies.</p>
<p>(Unlike in other parts of the world right now, unemployment rates are not as much of a problem among techies.)</p>
<p><a href="http://www.assetmap.com/">Assetmap</a>, a pre-launch San Francisco-based start-up, for example, wants to help companies and nonprofits understand what assets they may have at their disposal through their networks.</p>
<p>These connections already exist, but they&#8217;re often unexploited, according to Assetmap co-founder Nathaniel Whittemore, who let me in on a bit of what he&#8217;s doing.</p>
<p>Whittemore told NetworkEffect the failings of sites like LinkedIn include &#8220;forcing a distinction between personal and professional that is becoming less and less obvious and failing to recognize that the one-to-one friend-based social graph isn&#8217;t the only graph that has value for business.&#8221;</p>

<p>Whittemore and co-founder Danny Moldovan hail from the world of social entrepreneurship. Former Northwestern classmates, they had both been at the fast-growing activism platform <a href="http://www.change.org/">Change.org</a>.</p>
<p>They have teamed with Jayson Vantuyl, co-founder of <a href="http://www.engineyard.com/">Engine Yard</a>, the Ruby on Rails hosting service. At the moment, they are funded by friends and family while looking for outside capital, and plan to launch this spring.</p>
<p>There are many early companies in this space with fancier pedigrees.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.topprospect.com/">Top Prospect</a>, a social recruiting site that rewards users with $10,000 or more for helping friends find jobs, was <a href="http://www.topprospect.com/about/investors">funded</a> by Andreessen Horowitz, Spark Capital, Ron Conway, David Goldberg, Dustin Moskovitz, Rick Thompson, Chamath Palihapitiya and other angels.</p>
<p>Also based in San Francisco, Top Prospect was founded by Rotem Perelmuter, who formerly sold an online radio service to MTV Networks during the dot-com boom (and more recently ran a hedge fund). The site is currently in open beta.</p>

<p>Delicious founder Joshua Schachter&#8217;s Tasty Labs, which has <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20101124/joshua-schachter-goes-from-delicious-to-tasty/">gotten money from Union Square Ventures</a>, hasn&#8217;t said much about what it is doing, but is also working on something similar to the idea of an asset map.</p>
<p>Elsewhere, <a href="http://branchout.com/">BranchOut</a>, which bills itself as offering &#8220;your professional profile on Facebook,&#8221; <a href="http://techcrunch.com/2010/09/17/branchout-6-million/">raised</a> $6 million from Accel Partners, Floodgate, Norwest Venture Partners and many angels.</p>
<p>And <a href="http://hashable.com/">Hashable</a>, a network for introductions, <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20101122/meet-hashable-which-wants-to-make-money-by-introducing-you/">raised $4 million</a>, also from Union Square Ventures.</p>
<p>And <a href="http://namesake.com/">Namesake</a>, from Ad.ly and Newroo co-founders Brian Norgard and Daniel Gould, offers a pretty site for &#8220;opportunity routing,&#8221; with features such as a real-time stream and chat.</p>

<p>It goes on&#8211;other young start-ups in the space include <a href="http://www.sumazi.com/">Sumazi</a>, <a href="http://www.pursuit.com/">Pursuit</a>, <a href="http://www.identified.com/">Identified</a> and <a href="http://www.gild.com/">Gild</a>. (You knew this would happen: Gild turns the social recruiting concept into an online game.)</p>
<p>It wouldn&#8217;t really make sense to combine social and professional networks by starting from scratch, so these sites are built on top of existing networks like LinkedIn and particularly Facebook. If you want to try them out, be prepared to cough up those Facebook Connect credentials a whole bunch of times.</p>

<p>Let&#8217;s get this out of the way right now&#8211;WakeMate co-founder Arun Gupta said the start-up is finally shipping all pre-orders of the long-awaited sleep tracking gadget.</p>
<p>Gupta said, “Our goal is to fill all pre-orders by Christmas.”</p>
<p>And I can even verify that the unit exists, since I have been using one for a week now.</p>
<p>So why all the skepticism?</p>
<p>Because WakeMate&#8211;which began as an idea for a smart alarm clock back in 2006 and graduated out of the Y Combinator incubator in summer of 2009&#8211;has had more than a few delays in delivering product.</p>
<p>To be fair, the tiny company might have bit off a fair amount to chew. WakeMate chose a solution to the sleep-tracking problem that required it to build original hardware, a main Web application, as well as apps for Apple&#8217;s iPhone, Google&#8217;s Android and Research in Motion&#8217;s BlackBerry.</p>
<p>Thus, Gupta describes the first version of its product as “really, a public beta.&#8221;</p>
<p>And, WakeMate is indeed a little rough around the edges.</p>
<p>For example, the unit itself&#8211;with its semi-exposed electronics and shrink-tube wrapper&#8211;looks a little more like something hacked together on top of one of the mini DIY Arduino boards than it does a finished consumer electronics device.</p>
<p>But if you have any experience programming microcontrollers, you might appreciate the sort of sophistication that goes into coordinating this sleepy symphony of data gathering.</p>
<p>(Pardon us for a minute, while I get a little &uuml;ber-geeky and explain how the WakeMate wristband works. If this doesn&#8217;t concern you, feel free to fast-forward a few paragraphs to get to Gupta&#8217;s predictions for WakeMate&#8217;s future.)</p>
<p>When you flick the small switch on the WakeMate wristband, just prior to going to sleep, the device connects via Bluetooth to your iOS, Android or BlackBerry device.</p>
<p>You then open the WakeMate app and enter a 20-minute window during which you&#8217;d like to be woken.</p>
<p>The app talks to the wristband and transmits that time information. Then, both app and device enter a sort of low-power state. At this stage, the WakeMate becomes little more than a data logger.</p>
<p>There is a fairly standard, solid-state, three-axis accelerometer on board, much like the one that allows you to &#8220;shake to shuffle&#8221; your iPhone.</p>
<p>WakeMate then spits out three fields of data&#8211;X,Y and Z axis readings&#8211;40 times per second, which are stored in its flash memory all night.</p>
<p>That means an eight-hour sleep cycle will produce about 3.5 million unique data points, not including metadata.</p>
<p>The onboard clock&#8211;for the computer, not for human time-telling&#8211;waits until your pre-selected 20-minute window and then figures out, based on frequency and severity of wrist movement, when you are closest to being awake on your own.</p>
<p>When that moment comes, it wakes the Bluetooth connection, connects to the phone, sounds the alarm and starts uploading the data it collected all night directly to the phone and immediately sends the information to WakeMate&#8217;s servers.</p>
<p>And, not to worry, if the WakeMate dies mid-sleep, the phone knows to sound the alarm anyway.</p>
<p>It is quite a concert that needs to be played flawlessly for connectivity and battery life to remain intact.</p>
<p>Impressive data tricks aside, the world in which WakeMate was conceived looked a little different from the one into which it has been born, and that means a different set of competitive realities.</p>
<p>When WakeMate left Y Combinator, the world of iOS device-connected movement sensors was limited to the Nike Fit, which links running performance via a shoe-attached device.</p>
<p>It was also a world without Fitbit, another popular activity and health tracker.</p>
<p>And, unlike now, there were no sleep apps claiming to do what WakeMate does.</p>
<p>But now, even with all the new rivals, Gupta believes WakeMate still has the edge.</p>
<p>He explained: &#8220;In the early days of sleep-tracking studies, doctors decided to monitor non-dominant wrist movement as part of the data collected to determine sleep state. That continues today, so there is a ton of research that has been collected over the years on correlating wrist movement with sleep cycle.&#8221;</p>
<p>He added that WakeMate has built an algorithm that fits the data collected by its wristband to these medically relevant sleep-cycle models and spits out graphs mapping your sleep states, your waking moments and even times when you were in deepest sleep.</p>
<p>&#8220;All the competing tools out there aren&#8217;t at all based on any kind of accepted research&#8211;no one is studying pillow movement or waistband movement or anything,&#8221; Gupta said. &#8220;But we know how you are sleeping when you move your wrist.&#8221;</p>
<p>The major questions facing WakeMate as a company revolve around what one might expect from a start-up with such a complex beta product.</p>
<p>Gupta said it will focus on innovating and revising its wristband, as well as doing more interesting things with the data it will collect.</p>
<p>&#8220;On the macro level, we&#8217;re really doing the biggest sleep study that has ever been done,&#8221; he said. &#8220;We&#8217;ll be able to tell you how people are sleeping in San Francisco versus New York, based on seasons and all kinds of things.&#8221;</p>
<p>Gupta added that while he doesn’t know what the next step is, WakeMate is prototyping ideas where it could correlate sleep data with other metrics about health, occupation and stress to provide a more complete tool set.</p>
<p>But as more companies work on the problem of digitizing the analog data of human life, the harder questions to answer are really in front of the consumer.</p>
<p>Gupta said he doesn&#8217;t know what a world would look like if a health insurance company could access your sleep data, or when information about your apparent insomnia is grabbed by some hacker.</p>
<p>What WakeMate hopes for, he said, is a world where more people have access to the kind of medical data collection that has previously only been collectable by trained technicians in controlled settings.</p>
<p>But more data is better, as far as WakeMate is concerned&#8211;it is hoping that its vision puts its products at the center of an all-day biometric data collection future.</p>

<p>As promised, <strong>All Things Digital</strong> will be publishing the full videos of the interviews we did two weeks ago at our <strong>D: Dive Into Mobile</strong> conference in San Francisco.</p>
<p>The first extension of the event, it produced some very newsy sessions. We&#8217;ll be posting them all.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s <a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/20101207/flipboard-ceo-mike-mccue-live-at-dive-into-mobile/">Flipboard CEO and co-founder Mike McCue</a>, a longtime Silicon Valley entrepreneur whose latest Apple iPad app is giving publishers and readers a glimpse of what digital reading could be.</p>
<p>The effort is not without some controversy, as how content is being delivered on the new devices is an ongoing debate.</p>

<p>Flipboard had resisted adding feeds because its mission is to curate content through social channels. However, said co-founder Evan Doll, the company decided Google Reader wouldn&#8217;t be too much of a compromise, because it is synched through the cloud and has social sharing features.</p>
<p>Also, now that Flipboard has access to RSS feeds, it will display the full text of many articles when they are shared by a Flipboard user&#8217;s contacts on Facebook or Twitter.</p>
<p>(If publishers provide only excerpts in their RSS feeds, that&#8217;s all Flipboard users will get. If publishers are part of <a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/20101202/flipboard-partners-with-web-publishers-for-full-content-full-disclosure-including-atd/?mod=ATD_search">Flipboard&#8217;s Pages program</a>, their stories will be displayed in specially formatted &#8220;magazinified&#8221; pages no matter where they appear in the app.)</p>

<p>Flipboard is also adding Flickr feeds, something that had long been on the company&#8217;s list, said Doll. For users who curate their Flickr contacts and favorite pictures, viewing them on Flipboard will be a &#8220;personal life magazine,&#8221; as Doll put it.</p>
<p>The other big change Flipboard is making is that it will load full Web pages as soon as a user clicks on a story, rather than asking users to take the extra step of clicking a &#8220;read on Web&#8221; button.</p>
<p>And for good measure, Flipboard will now allow readers to update Facebook and Twitter (as pictured), rather than just consume their content.</p>
<p>Now that Flipboard has caved and added RSS feeds to its app, I asked Doll if it would ever add search to complement social discovery.</p>
<p>&#8220;That&#8217;s a great question,&#8221; he said, before not really answering it.</p>
<p>Flipboard launched last July and has received wide acclaim, including being named <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20101209/top-ios-apps-of-2010-flipboard-hipstamatic-plants-vs-zombies-and-osmos/">Apple&#8217;s top iPad app of 2010</a>. However, it has not yet disclosed user numbers.</p>

<p><a href="http://www.trialpay.com/">TrialPay</a> is bringing the concept of enticing shoppers with the latest tabloid magazine, a pack of gum or a Snickers bar from the line at the grocery store to the online checkout world.</p>
<p>However, there&#8217;s a twist: If you bite, you&#8217;ll also get a discount on your original purchase.</p>
<p>Up until now, the Mountain View, Calif.-based company&#8217;s offers were most likely seen by people playing Facebook games.</p>
<p>Through a fairly exclusive partnership with Facebook Credits, TrialPay can offer a virtual good for free if a player considers buying another deal, like a cup of Starbucks coffee or a Chipotle Mexican Grill burrito.</p>
<p>TrialPay&#8217;s founder and CEO Alex Rampell explains that Starbucks or Chipotle pays TrialPay for the sales lead, and TrialPay pays FarmVille. Rampell said it&#8217;s a system consumers are comfortable with, because they are often buying physical goods, rather than intangible goods.</p>
<p>TrialPay&#8217;s new service, which is coming out of a long beta today, is bringing these alternate payment options to the online shopping cart. The goal is to convert more sales before they are abandoned at the point of sale.</p>
<p>One of its guinea pigs was <a href="http://www.playon.tv/">MediaMall Technologies</a>, which sells online streaming TV subscription packages. It offered customers a $15 discount on its PlayOn Premium software (normally $40) in return for signing up for a particular offer.</p>
<p>One such offer required users to also sign up for a <a href="http://www.gamefly.com/">GameFly</a> subscription, which sends videogame rentals to your door, or a RealPlayer SuperPass.</p>
<p>Rampell said MediaMall immediately saw a 10 percent increase in revenue and a dramatic increase in average order value. The increase in average order value was due to the fact that it received a bonus commission based on every in-cart offer completion.</p>
<p>TrialPay is calling it a hosted shopping cart because it also handles the various payment systems, including PayPal and credit cart providers, on behalf of the retailer.</p>

<p>&#8220;If I have a mobile app and a bunch of ad inventory and I assign it all to AdMob or iAd, I don’t have a lot of control over what happens,&#8221; Payne said in an interview. &#8220;This is really about putting control back in the hands of the publishers.&#8221;</p>
<p>The field used to be dominated by mobile-specific start-ups, but <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20100527/google-closes-admob-deal/">Google&#8217;s purchase of AdMob</a> and Apple&#8217;s launch of iAd (and <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100104/exclusive-apple-to-buy-quattro-wireless-for-275-million/">purchase of Quattro Wireless</a>) have <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20101206/google-expected-to-outgrow-apple-in-mobile-display-ad-market-in-2011/">changed that landscape significantly</a>.</p>
<p>The service, which MoPub likens to a DoubleClick for mobile publishers, is still in private beta testing. MoPub itself is still tiny though, with basically just the founders and their vision. Payne said the company hopes to staff up to about 10 using the new funding, the size of which he declined to disclose.</p>

<p>That jibes with <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20101027/how-to-find-the-google-chrome-app-store-wait-till-december/">what I&#8217;d heard in October</a>, as well as with reporting this week from <a href="http://techcrunch.com/2010/11/30/chrome-web-store-3/">TechCrunch</a>. And there&#8217;s a decent chance that Google will be showing off more than just a store that day. <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/12/03/sources-google-branded-chromebook-to-launch-on-december-7th/">Engadget</a>, for starters, thinks we&#8217;ll see a Google-branded netbook designed for Chrome that day as well.</p>
<p>As far as the store goes: My understanding is that the marketplace, designed to showcase Web apps, will be available for anyone who&#8217;s using the <a href="http://www.google.com/landing/chrome/beta/">beta version of the Chrome browser.</a> So the rest of you have a couple of days to upgrade.</p>
<p><strong>UPDATE:</strong> There you go: &#8212; Google&#8217;s Chrome Team just announced a media event to &#8220;share some exciting news about Chrome&#8221; on Tuesday, Dec. 7.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Yesterday, I wrote about <a href="http://www.alphonsolabs.com/products">Pulse</a>, a news-reading app with innovative design, <a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/20101201/pulse-news-app-gets-social/">going social by integrating Facebook</a>.</p>
<p>Now <a href="http://www.flipboard.com/">Flipboard</a>, a social news-reading app based around Twitter and Facebook, is adding publisher feeds.</p>
<p>One thing&#8217;s clear: There&#8217;s a lot of excitement and energy going into how the iPad can re-create content consumption.</p>
<p><img class="alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-958" title="FlipboardMossberg" src="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/files/2010/12/FlipboardMossberg-150x150.png" alt="" width="150" height="150" />Flipboard is launching a beta test with eight publishers, including, full disclosure, <strong>All Things Digital</strong>.</p>
<p>The other publishers are ABC News, Bon App&eacute;tit, Lonely Planet, SB Nation, SFGate, Uncrate and the Washington Post Magazine.</p>
<p>Participating advertisers, through a partnership with OMD, include Pepsi, Gatorade, Infiniti, the CW Television Network, Showtime, Levi’s, Dockers, Hilton Worldwide, GE, Hawaii Visitors and Convention Bureau, Project (RED), Standup2cancer.org and Charity: Water.</p>
<p>They are contributing full-page ads that are inserted into longer-form articles.</p>
<p>During the beta period, no money will change hands between any of these parties, including our site, according to Flipboard CEO Mike McCue.</p>
<p>Later, McCue said he expects to add many more publishers to the Flipboard app, and perhaps help publishers create their own &#8220;iPadified&#8221; content experiences to distribute themselves.</p>
<p>Instead of prompting users to go to the iPad&#8217;s Safari browser to read full versions of articles, as it has done to date, Flipboard will now import partner publisher content and lay it out automatically. For these stories, Flipboard formats images, divides them into pages and offers different layouts for portrait and landscape modes.</p>
<p>McCue said Flipboard users&#8217; No. 1 most requested feature is the ability to add content through RSS feeds.</p>
<p>But he&#8217;s not giving them that with this update. Users can still only subscribe to publishers through Twitter accounts and lists. The reason, according to McCue, is Flipboard is dedicated to the social aspect and beautiful design of content, and RSS contains neither of these things.</p>
<p>McCue speaks of scrolling through Web pages with advertising units and side bars as a relic of the early Web and crappy Internet connections, saying Flipboard represents a return to the pagination and image emphasis of print.</p>
<p>Unlike print, though, Flipboard doesn&#8217;t work offline; that&#8217;s a future feature, said McCue. He also said his team is still singularly devoted to developing for iPad, and will divert focus to Android tablets only after they have an established user base.</p>
<p>By the way&#8211;more full disclosure&#8211;seeing <strong>ATD</strong> content get iPadified in McCue&#8217;s demo wasn&#8217;t as fun and glossy as you might imagine, especially given our small images.</p>
<p>And in what might be a problem for other content publishers like us, the quick blog posts we often write are not as easily transferable to this layout, given Flipboard does not yet differentiate between short stories and longer articles.</p>
