<p>Endemol makes television shows, such as &#8220;Extreme Makeover: Home Edition,&#8221; &#8220;Big Brother,&#8221; &#8220;Wipeout” and &#8220;Jerseylicious,&#8221; as well as Web series &#8220;Married On My Space 1 &#038; 2&#8243; and &#8220;Coupon Mom.&#8221;</p>
<p>AOL is working on several other content partnerships, said sources, to add to its previous ones.</p>
<p>AOL said the first two &#8220;built-if-sold&#8221;&#8211;meaning some big advertiser has to pony up&#8211;will be:</p>
<p>&#8220;Re-Dressed by America&#8221;: An interactive Web series where online users make over subjects facing a life-changing event (high school reunions, first dates, etc.) by voting on their hairstyles, fashion, accessories and more. The series will be featured on Stylelist.com and MyDaily.com.</p>
<p>&#8220;Mamá&#8217;s Recipe&#8221;: U.S. families compete for the best family recipes and share their secrets with the AOL audience. The series will be featured on KitchenDaily and AOL Latino.</p>

The Google CEO is evidently on a one-man crusade to make it a truism. Discussing the company’s ambitions in the search business, where it now holds a de facto monopoly, Schmidt said the next frontier is to provide us with information that we didn&#8217;t know we wanted to know.</p>
<p>“We&#8217;re trying to figure out what the future of search is,” <a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748704901104575423294099527212.html">he told The Wall Street Journal</a>. “One idea is that more and more searches are done on your behalf without you needing to type&#8230;.I actually think most people don&#8217;t want Google to answer their questions&#8230;.They want Google to tell them what they should be doing next.”</p>
<p>Or, more likely, <em>Google</em> wants them to want that. But that’s really beside the point, because either way, Schmidt’s remark is unsettling. After all, highly relevant search that wholly transcends human agency is really possible only if Google knows most everything about us. Which is a frightening idea. </p>
<p>But not nearly as frightening as the company’s belief that that&#8217;s what most of us want&#8211;our detailed online profile employed by an algorithm to tell us what to do. </p>
<p>But not to worry&#8211;if Google (GOOG) steers us into some bad choices that threaten to dog us forever online, Schmidt favors the option to change identities. From the WSJ:</p>

He predicts, apparently seriously, that every young person one day will be entitled automatically to change his or her name on reaching adulthood in order to disown youthful hijinks stored on their friends&#8217; social media sites&#8230;.&#8221;I don&#8217;t believe society understands what happens when everything is available, knowable and recorded by everyone all the time,&#8221; he says&#8230;.&#8221;I mean we really have to think about these things as a society.&#8221; </blockquote class="memo">

<p>This should change early next year, but in the most limited way. Hulu plans to let users in the U.K., and most likely, other countries, access its U.S. site to watch a single show: The made-for-the Web reality series, &#8220;If I Can Dream.&#8221;</p>
<p>The show comes via 19 Entertainment, owner and creator of the &#8220;American Idol&#8221; franchise, and has a similar theme: It will follow five would-be stars as they try to make their way as actors, singers, etc. They&#8217;ll live in a Hollywood house wired with HD cameras and microphones, and viewers will be able to follow them live, seven days a week, via a <a href="http://www.ificandream.com/">streaming Web video site</a>.</p>
<p>That footage will be edited down to a 30-minute weekly highlights show for Hulu. And that&#8217;s the show that should provide many international viewers with their first glimpse of Hulu, owned by GE&#8217;s (GE) NBC, News Corp.&#8217;s (NWS) Fox and Disney&#8217;s (DIS) ABC.</p>
<p>The <a href="http://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/simon-fullers-19-entertainment-partners-with-hulu-clear-channel-myspace-pepsi-and-ford-motor-company-in-innovative-entertainment-venture-79454407.html">press release</a> announcing &#8220;If I Can Dream&#8221; says &#8220;it will be the first recurring show to be available to select international audiences via Hulu,&#8221; though it doesn&#8217;t spell out which countries or a time frame. But I&#8217;m told the series is set to start running early next year and that the U.K., where 19 Entertainment is based, is one of the countries slated to get access.</p>
<p>There&#8217;s still a possibility that the international plans could fall through. However, 19 Entertainment owns the show outright, which ought to make things easy. And both Ford (F) and Pepsi (PEP), which have already signed on to underwrite much of the show&#8217;s costs, advertise internationally, which ought to make things even easier.</p>
<p>But since &#8220;If I Can Dream&#8221; will use recorded music as a soundtrack, clearing the rights to every song in every territory could pose a problem.</p>
<p>That uncertainty should also help explain why Hulu has taken so long to expand the rest of the site to other countries: Even when Hulu finds major TV partners that want to work with it&#8211;which isn&#8217;t always a given&#8211;sorting out rights problems for every show or movie can be a lot of work.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, a few notes on &#8220;If I Can Dream&#8221;:</p>
<ul>
<li>Hulu and 19 Entertainment, which is owned by Bob Sillerman&#8217;s CKX (CKXE) licensing shop, don&#8217;t seem exactly sure how to describe the new venture. Hulu&#8217;s <a href="http://tvbythenumbers.com/2009/12/16/hulu-partners-with-19-entertainment-to-launch-original-programming/36510">press release</a> calls it a &#8220;post-reality entertainment show.&#8221; But 19 Entertainment&#8217;s PR guy asked me specifically to avoid calling it a reality show. &#8220;It&#8217;s a Web experience,&#8221; he explains. Okay, then.</li>
<li>Whatever you want to call it, at least parts of &#8220;If I Can Dream&#8221; will seem familiar: There&#8217;s the Peeping Tom component of &#8220;Big Brother,&#8221; mixed with &#8220;Idol&#8217;s&#8221; star-making. And if we&#8217;re lucky, some drunken debauchery a la &#8220;The Real World.&#8221;</li>
<li>The most interesting element is the show&#8217;s path to Hulu: 19 Entertainment originally pitched the show to broadcast and cable networks, which hemmed and hawed, I&#8217;m told. But sources say Hulu jumped at the chance to run the show as an exclusive. Theoretically, if it does well enough on the Web, it could end up on conventional TV next year, too. But &#8220;If I Can Dream&#8221; is designed to turn a profit without leaving the Internet.</li>
<li>The show is synergized from the get-go: In addition to the Ford, Pepsi and Hulu connections, it will also use promotion from News Corp.&#8217;s MySpace, which will help run a talent search to find new faces as the old ones cycle out. And Clear Channel (CCO) will use its network of radio stations to promote the talent.</li>
<li>The cast of five seems to be composed of exceptionally good-looking people. If you&#8217;re trying to view this clip from outside the U.S., you&#8217;ll have to take my word for it:</li>

<p>And Google (GOOG) appears to have lost a tussle in Italian court today.</p>
<p>Mediaset, a commercial broadcaster controlled by Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, has won a copyright-infringement ruling, and a Rome court has ordered YouTube to remove all of Mediaset&#8217;s content from the site.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.variety.com/article/VR1118012827.html?categoryid=19&amp;cs=1&amp;ref=vertintl">Variety</a>:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>The broadcaster began legal action in July 2008 following a trawl through the YouTube site revealed 4,643 clips and 325 hours of unauthorized Mediaset material, the company claimed.</p>
<p>In his written report, judge Tommaso Marvasi referred in particular to the prevalence on YouTube of Mediaset&#8217;s Italo version of &#8220;Big Brother,&#8221; which he described as the most important reality show on Italian television. It is also the Mediaset program most viewed on the Internet.</p>
<p>In a statement, Mediaset said that the ruling was historic because for the first time the rights of the broadcasters and program editors to their exclusive products had been fully recognized.</p></blockquote>
<p>Mediaset is reportedly looking for more than $730 million in damages, but no word on how that phase of the trial will proceed.</p>
<p>YouTube&#8217;s response, via a spokesman:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>We are considering our next steps, including a possible appeal. Under European and Italian law, service providers such as YouTube are not responsible for screening the content people upload. But we actually go beyond the law by offering copyright holders effective tools which allow them to manage how and whether their content is made available. It&#8217;s a programme called Content ID. More than 1,000 broadcast partners including Rai and Fox Channels Italy have chosen to use it. Mediaset could simply join these other partners and use the tools as well. Alternatively, it would be enough for them to provide us the URLs of the videos and we would remove them.</p></blockquote>
<p>Win some, lose some. Earlier this year, YouTube&#8211;along with most other Web companies that rely on user-generated and/or uploaded content&#8211;was celebrating <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090914/universal-music-gets-slapped-in-court-what-does-that-mean-for-veoh-and-youtube/">Veoh&#8217;s U.S. court victory against Universal Music</a>.</p>
<p>If that ruling stands, it appears to put almost all of the onus on content owners to keep their stuff off of video sites. Which could pose a problem for Viacom (VIA) and its billion-dollar lawsuit against Google.</p>

<p>While many police forces are boosting video monitoring, video-surveillance experts believe Chicago has gone further than any other U.S. city in merging computer and video technology to police the streets. The networked system is also unusual because of its scope and the integration of nonpolice cameras.</p>
<p>The city links the 1,500 cameras that police have placed in trouble spots with thousands more&#8211;police won&#8217;t say how many&#8211;that have been installed by other government agencies and the private sector in city buses, businesses, public schools, subway stations, housing projects and elsewhere.</p>

<p>BoomTown is here at Microsoft HQ in Redmond, Wash., where a panoply of top execs from the company is giving a full day of presentations to a roomful of Wall Street analysts and media folks at its <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090730/microsofts-financial-analysts-meeting-today-billion-dollar-belly-flop-with-a-side-of-yahoo/">annual Financial Analyst Meeting</a>.</p>
<p>First up, as you might imagine, is CEO Steve Ballmer, who is as bouncy and braggy as I have ever seen him, probably because he is fresh from getting his mitts on a long-sought-after prize&#8211;the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090729/complete-coverage-yahoo-microsoft-deal/">search business of Yahoo</a> (YHOO).</p>
<p>But, while the media and investors think Microsoft (MSFT) made out well in the online search and advertising deal, the opinion about Yahoo&#8217;s side of the deal has been not so positive.</p>
<p>Actually, tragic, with Yahoo shares down another five percent today already, after plummeting 12 percent yesterday. Look out below!</p>
<p>Thus, Ballmer to the rescue!</p>
<p>&#8220;This is the one that stuns me, that people haven’t figured it out,&#8221; said Ballmer, pointing out that Yahoo cut costs and gets to keep revenue. &#8220;It’s sort of, like, unbelievable.&#8221;</p>
<p>Believe it, Steve, especially since everyone thinks Microsoft pulled a fast one on Yahoo.</p>
<p>Otherwise, Ballmer gave a relatively upbeat speech about the software giant, even after a tough year for Microsoft, due to the weak economy and the fall-off of sales of personal computers.</p>
<p>Ballmer had computers on the brain, especially those of competitors, like Apple (AAPL), which was popular with the audience.</p>
<p>&#8220;We have low share, by the way, in the investor audience. I can see the Apple logos versus the PC logos,&#8221; he joked. &#8220;Our share is lower in this audience than the average audience. Don’t hide it. I’ve already counted them. I have been doing that since we started talking.&#8221;</p>
<p>I wonder if Big Brother, oops, Ballmer, also took note of my iPhone and browser open to Google (GOOG) search.</p>
<p>As is part of the reliable Ballmer act, along with Apple-bashing, there was Google-bashing, Linux-bashing and general Anybody-But-Microsoft-Bashing.</p>
<p>But, bullies, be warned! There will be no more Yahoo-bashing from you or Microsoft&#8211;well, on the record, at least!&#8211;or you&#8217;ll apparently have to answer to He-Man Ballmer.</p>

<p>YouTube has a high percentage of personal or response videos, he said, while Hulu is where consumers go to watch an entire TV episode. Metacafe.com, in contrast, is pared down to channels for movie trailers, sports clips and music videos. It had about 7.3 million unique video viewers in April, according to comScore (SCOR), compared with Hulu’s 40.1 million uniques.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>For the past week, I&#8217;ve been stalking my sister, my boyfriend and my boss. They&#8217;ve also been stalking me, and we still like one another.</p>
<p>All four of us have been using an application that, once downloaded onto a mobile device, uses location-based technology to track its users&#8217; movements. The app then displays the user&#8217;s location on a map for friends to see, so they can know where the person is at all times.</p>
<p>We used <a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=goog'>Google</a> Latitude, a new feature in the search giant&#8217;s Google Maps mobile application as of today. People can get this if they upgrade their current version of Google Maps or install Maps for the first time. It works on Google&#8217;s G1, most color BlackBerrys, most Windows Mobile devices and some other smart phones. Google says it will soon work on the iPhone, iPod touch and Sony Ericsson phones.</p>

<p>Google (GOOG) is arriving late to the party where location-based apps like Loopt (<a href="http://Loopt.com" rel="external">Loopt.com</a>) from Loopt Inc. and Where (<a href="http://where.com" rel="external">where.com</a>) from uLocate Communications are already following people on a variety of mobile devices ranging from basic cellphones to iPhones. These apps rely on GPS satellites, Wi-Fi or cellular towers to locate you and your friends, and then use this data to encourage people to find nearby attractions, local information or social networks.</p>
<p>Latitude is an opt-in-only feature, meaning no one can see your location &#8212; or vice versa &#8212; without permission. It uses either GPS satellites or cell-tower and Wi-Fi location technology depending on your mobile device&#8217;s specifications and what&#8217;s most available in certain spots. My trusted testers and I used Google Latitude on three different kinds of BlackBerrys: the Pearl 8130, Curve 8320 and two Curve 8900s. Of these, only the 8900s made use of GPS.</p>
<div class="media-CENTER" style="width: 262px;"><img src="http://online.wsj.com/public/resources/images/PJ-AO376_MOSSBE_DV_20090203131416.jpg" alt="Google Latitude" height="394" width="262" /><br />Latitude, a feature in Google Maps, shares someone&#8217;s location, status and photo with friends. Location data can update every several minutes when a user is moving.</div>
<p>Along with their locations, friends can share other information on Latitude by updating a status line or changing their picture, which appears as a tiny representative icon on a map. Changes to one&#8217;s status or picture will be reflected in Google Talk, Google&#8217;s instant-messaging tool, but this doesn&#8217;t integrate with other status-related social-networking programs like Facebook or Twitter, and thus may saddle people with another status entry to update.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s easy to find fault in Latitude since it often spots people inaccurately, including showing my sister in Boston&#8217;s Charles River, rather than in a neighborhood along the river. It&#8217;s worth noting that tracking technology in general, including GPS, can be inaccurate. But even with these inaccuracies, my friends and I liked finding one another on our respective maps and used this geographic information to send location-specific messages to each other: I joked with my boyfriend about not leaving his house on time for a dinner and commended my sister on getting up early for church on Sunday.</p>
<p>Usability issues aside, location-based services like Latitude can be just plain creepy, especially when a Big Brother like Google is tracking your whereabouts. So Google incorporated easy-to-change privacy settings so that locations can be automatically detected, manually entered or completely hidden from other people. Or people can sign out of Latitude altogether.</p>
<p>Likewise, users can adjust the level of geographic information they&#8217;re willing to share with each person. For example, I might want to share with my boyfriend my best available location information, like a specific spot on a street, and share only city-level location information with my boss.</p>
<p>The city-level information would be helpful for my parents, who often wish they had a better idea of when I&#8217;m traveling for work and where I&#8217;ll be. But my parents aren&#8217;t likely to download Google Latitude onto their mobile devices anytime soon. For them, a special Latitude widget in iGoogle &#8212; Google&#8217;s personalized home page feature on a PC &#8212; might be best. This widget is also useful for people who may have Latitude on a mobile device but are sitting at their desks and want to see where their friends are.</p>
<p>As expected, Latitude worked differently between me and the people who live in the same area, compared with how it worked between me and people who live hundreds of miles away, like my sister in Boston. For example, my boyfriend and I are more likely to use our respective locations to plan where we&#8217;ll meet for dinner, while my sister&#8217;s current location is just fun to see. Still, my sister and I know one another&#8217;s neighborhoods well enough to have an idea of where the other was, and we felt a little more plugged in with each other&#8217;s lives when we saw one another on our maps.</p>
<p>People who live in urban settings will likely use Latitude differently than those who live in the suburbs. One of my testers noted that it could be fun using Latitude to see where friends are out in a city on any given night. But because Latitude sometimes pegs people&#8217;s locations as a lot farther away than they are &#8212; one test spotted a friend 1.5 miles away from his real location &#8212; this might be tough data to go on.</p>
<p>After using Latitude for a while, I grew to recognize familiar location mistakes like home or work, and knew where my friends actually were. But it&#8217;s unfortunate that locations aren&#8217;t more accurately marked.</p>
<p>Latitude returned the most precise location results when determining where the two GPS-using BlackBerry Curve 8900s were at any given time, though these spots still weren&#8217;t perfect. If a mobile device doesn&#8217;t have GPS or if GPS simply isn&#8217;t available in the area, cellular towers and Wi-Fi will help a determine location. These alternate methods use less battery than GPS, so they will work instead of GPS when Google Maps isn&#8217;t running in the foreground of a device.</p>
<p>Latitude users can opt to allow their location to automatically update every several minutes while they&#8217;re moving. A Friends List that appears with the map lists people in order of who is moving starting with who moved most recently. Users can send text messages or call friends directly from this list, or find nearby spots like bars or movie theaters by typing into a search box; restaurant information includes ratings and reviews. Directions to and from friends&#8217; locations are also available, and you can plan your route via car, mass transit or walking.</p>
<p>Location-based services like Latitude are great for keeping tabs on friends and could even come in handy in other situations &#8212; such as when parents want to know where their kids are or when elderly relatives want to let someone always know their whereabouts. But I wouldn&#8217;t want to depend on them in an emergency.</p>
