			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Microsoft is having a little Bing gathering in San Francisco. I&#8217;m told there will be some mobile stuff, plus I&#8217;m still having withdrawal symptoms after seven years on the Redmond beat, so I&#8217;ll be providing live coverage starting at about 10 am PT.</p>
<p>We&#8217;ll also see what they have to say about the Yahoo search partnership and its efforts to catch up with Google (and trip them up with antitrust headaches).</p>

<p>Okay. I&#8217;m onsite and nearly caffeinated. Yes, there are donuts, but Mobilized is going for the savory option.</p>

<p><strong>10:03 am</strong>: Still waiting for things to get started here.</p>
<p><strong>10:04 am</strong>: Microsoft search engineering head Satya Nadella comes out. &#8220;Okay, let&#8217;s get this thing underway.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>10:06 am</strong>: First up, some momentum stuff. Share is at 11.8 percent per comScore numbers released yesterday, up another 0.2 percent from October. Overall up 48 percent since launch. &#8220;We&#8217;re very, very happy with that growth.&#8221; Now over 90 million users, but the big deal, he says, is more heavy searchers. &#8220;We never had the fans of Bing and the heavy users,&#8221; Nadella says.</p>
<p><strong>10:08 am</strong>: Nadella says Bing is still getting a larger percentage of 18- to 24-year-olds than its share of searchers as a whole.</p>
<p><strong>10:09 am</strong>: &#8220;These are footholds that we have in the marketplace,&#8221; Nadella says.</p>

<p><strong>10:11 am</strong>: Continued focus on specialized verticals (like travel, music, health, image search etc). Overall, such searches account for five percent of all queries, but specialized search makes up of 10 percent of Bing&#8217;s searches.</p>
<p><strong>10:12 am</strong>: Partnerships: Yahoo is obviously the big one, but Nadella shows slide with Facebook, Twitter, Verizon., BlackBerry, Apple, Android, Foursquare and other logos.</p>
<p>There ave been 5.5 million downloads of the iPhone app.</p>
<p>Nadella says the toolbar deals are also important: They just give us a shot at acquiring the users. They have another one coming with Conduit. Also, they are now at least an option on iPhone and Firefox.</p>

<p><strong>10:16 am</strong>: Nadella says the engineering team is focused on three areas, beyond the &#8220;arms race&#8221; of overall search quality&#8211;increasing the visual organization, task-centered nature and social elements of search. </p>
<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re neck and neck in terms of search quality and we are able to maintain it,&#8221; Nadella says.</p>
<p><strong>10:18 am</strong>: Lots of talk about the ins and outs of search tech. Nadella says Microsoft has moved from a &#8220;neural net&#8221; approach to &#8220;boosted decision trees.&#8221; (No idea what that means.)</p>
<p><strong>10:22 am</strong>: Effort to make search more social is important, but just beginning. &#8220;This is a journey we are at the very beginnings of,&#8221; Nadella says, but says social will change search in terms of how results are discovered, formulated and answered.</p>
<p><strong>10:24 am</strong>: Nadella is talking about the importance of visual highlighting to call out various results as well as boosting interactivity, such as including forms within results so users can take action.</p>
<p>Still waiting for any new stuff, but we&#8217;re told it&#8217;s coming.</p>
<p>Nadella says the company has broken down a list of the tasks people are trying to do when they are trying to do more than just navigate to a particular site.</p>
<p>&#8220;We have a pretty granular understanding just looking at the query stream of what people are trying to get done.&#8221;</p>
<p>Microsoft has broken it down to some 150 categories, but here are some of the top ones: 4.6 percent of searches are music related, 1.8 percent clothing and shoes, 1.6 percent consumer electronics, 1.1 recipes, 1.3 percent home furnishings.</p>
<p><strong>10:29 am</strong>: On to some new stuff.</p>
<p>New image search launching today, but first Microsoft is talking about visual search for things like finding movies and giving direct answers for some new types of queries.</p>

<p><strong>10:31 am</strong>: Microsoft is talking about any sort of non-search result as &#8220;answers.&#8221;</p>
<p>In one case, an &#8220;answer&#8221; for the query &#8220;let&#8217;s make a deal&#8221; would be video episodes of the game show.</p>
<p>But Microsoft says that automatically putting it at the top is not necessarily best. What the company says it should do instead is put it below the first two results, such as the show&#8217;s homepage, which get more clicks than the video.</p>
<p><strong>10:35 am</strong>: Also when a user searches flights from Denver to Las Vegas in June, Microsoft pre-populates the fields in a flight search with a guess at the dates, in this case the first weekend in June.</p>
<p><strong>10:38 am</strong>: New image search represents first major changes in a year. Biggest shift is white space is gone with just a ton of tiles of images, with some categories at the top.</p>
<p>For example, search &#8220;Casablanca&#8221; and you get an option for the city in Morocco, another for the movie, a third for the style of wedding dress and another for the Casablanca Lily flower.</p>
<p><strong>10:40 am</strong>: On to shopping. Quadrupled the number of products in its database.</p>

<p><strong>10:43 am</strong>: Bing is adding a new focus on places as &#8220;destinations&#8221; with all the potential content from booking a flight or hotel to maps and attractions. </p>
<p>Which is nice, because I&#8217;m ready to go on a vacation right about now.</p>
<p>They use weather data to show times to go to and times to avoid a particular place.</p>
<p><strong>10:45 am</strong>: Microsoft is beefing up event listings with partnership from FanSnap and other partners. You get ticket info, diagram of stadium, etc.</p>

<p><strong>10:50 am</strong>: Back to social. Nadella says search can change by using one&#8217;s social graph to influence search results.</p>
<p>First example, you will start to see when your Facebook friends &#8220;Like&#8221; a page that is in search results.</p>
<p>For now, such results will only come up fairly infrequently, but Nadella says it will be a big deal when you do see pages that your friends have liked.</p>

<p>Search allows the data your friends share on Facebook to come to you when you actually want the information.</p>
<p>&#8220;In a way you are taking your friends with you,&#8221; says Microsoft&#8217;s Paul Yiu.</p>
<p>An example is when you are shopping for a product or going to visit a place&#8211;that&#8217;s a time when you really want to know what your friends think.</p>
<p>(Seems pretty cool, but wondering just how infrequently this will show up.)</p>
<p><strong>10:57 am</strong>: Another example Yiu gives is a search one might do at 3 am for what will make your baby stop crying. There are lots of results, but one that your friend likes might be worth trying first.</p>
<p><strong>11:00 am</strong>: Bing is also using one&#8217;s Facebook social circle to rank results in people search&#8211;i.e., if you have a friend in common, it will rank that &#8220;John Doe&#8221; higher than one you don&#8217;t know.</p>
<p><strong>11:01 am</strong>: Nadella is back to talk about local and maps and how that integrates with mobile. Behind him Blaise Aguera y Arcas is pulling out several phones to do a demo. (And they look like iPhones.)</p>
<p><strong>11:03 am</strong>: Aguera y Arcas takes the stage to show some changes coming to maps, first on the desktop. He notes the recent shift away from putting its most powerful map features on a Silverlight-powered site. Now it is moving that all to an HTML5-based site that needs no plug-ins.</p>
<p><strong>11:07 am</strong>: Bing is bringing the &#8220;tasks&#8221; concept to searches within maps. A search for a restaurant now brings up not just a map, but more info on the eatery and also the ability to make reservations via OpenTable.</p>
<p><strong>11:09 am</strong>: Aguera y Arcas switches to the iPhone. Shows how people can add their own panoramas to maps using a cellphone.</p>
<p><strong>11:13 am</strong>: iPhone demo over 3G is going really slow. Aguera y Arcas asks how many of the reporters in the room are using 3G.</p>
<p><strong>11:15 am</strong>: Although its going painfully slow, looks like Bing app starts to recognize a restaurant search and pops up options like types of cuisine and price. The goal is to save keystrokes.</p>
<p>Other options are things like get a map, make a reservation, menus, etc.</p>
<p>Still R-E-A-L-L-Y S-L-O-W.</p>
<p>&#8220;This bandwidth situation is really going to suck for what I have to demo next.&#8221;</p>
<p>He switches to a first-person StreetSide view, but all we see are dots.</p>
<p>&#8220;This is so sad,&#8221; Aguera y Arcas says, lamenting that we aren&#8217;t able to see all the cool stuff. There does seem to be some new StreetSide view stuff on the iPhone app that could be neat, assuming it runs faster on the street than inside this demo room.</p>

<p><strong>11:23 am</strong>: We&#8217;ve reached a new low. &#8220;Close your eyes and imagine&#8230;.&#8221; Aguera y Arcas says, and then describes what the app would do if we could see it.</p>
<p><strong>11:23 am</strong>: And they have switched to Wi-Fi. &#8220;This is so exciting,&#8221; Aguera y Arcas says. Now he&#8217;s going back to StreetSide. &#8220;That&#8217;s so much nicer.&#8221;</p>
<p>As for directions, Bing now has bus directions with schedule info in addition to driving and walking directions. &#8220;It&#8217;s about time,&#8221; he says. &#8220;I&#8217;ve been waiting for this one myself.&#8221;</p>
<p>Another feature reminds you to do something when you reach a certain place, like call someone or check-in to FourSquare or Facebook.</p>
<p><strong>11:29 am</strong>: Aguera says we are in Search 2.0&#8211;where you do more than just search and get results. </p>
<p>Image search is an example. Shows the coming ability to search for something by using a camera to start a search. Basically you can shoot a picture of a page and use any of the terms there to start searching (It uses character recognition in the background).</p>
<h4 class="subhed">Questions and Answers</h4>

<p><strong>11:32 am</strong>: How big a deal is Google Instant?</p>
<p>&#8220;We are absolutely studying Google Instant,&#8221; Nadella says. Says they could match it. It&#8217;s a question of whether it makes task completion easier. &#8220;Is it a value or a distraction?&#8221; Doing studies and so far Microsoft&#8217;s research says it is mixed at best.</p>
<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s not a game changer. It&#8217;s a nice feature at best.&#8221;</p>
<p>He hedges a bit on whether it is something Microsoft needs to match.</p>

<p><strong>11:39 am</strong>: Mobile features were demoed on iPhone. So when will they come to Windows Phone 7 and other platforms?</p>
<p>Nadella says they now have software for most major phone operating systems, including Android.</p>
<p>&#8220;The different devices have different schedules,&#8221; he says.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>It&#8217;s official, the holiday shopping season has begun and it&#8217;s time to get serious about gift lists. This week, I took a closer look at some online services that could help you—or those shopping for you—find and buy the right gifts.</p>
<p>While there are many services around, I&#8217;ll just touch on a handful of them, including some that take advantage of social networking and group buying.</p>

<p>Bing, Microsoft&#8217;s search engine, is jumping into the wish-list action this holiday season with the Bing Shopping List. Starting Wednesday, this feature lets people add items to a saved wish list by simply check-marking an on-screen box in shopping search results. Shopping search results are displayed by clicking the Shopping tab in Bing search results or by selecting Shopping on Bing.com and going from there. Once an item&#8217;s box has been checked, a small, in-browser visual of all items added to the wish list is displayed in the lower left corner of the browser window. Lists are saved between sessions, so you can close your browser and open it another time and work with the same saved list.</p>
<p>In addition to collecting a list of wished-for items, the Bing Shopping List lets people share those lists with their Facebook friends, giving them a chance to see and buy items from someone else&#8217;s wish list. Or people can use Bing Shopping Lists to select just a couple items, share them with the Facebook community, and ask for friends&#8217; opinions about which product is better. Users may get feedback from friends they wouldn&#8217;t otherwise know were experts in certain areas.</p>
<p>A Microsoft spokesman said the impetus for this came from trends the company saw taking place on the Web—specifically, people using Facebook to solicit opinions about what to buy and to tell others what they want. </p>
<p>A downside to the Bing Shopping Lists is that they don&#8217;t yet offer a way to share items with only certain people, which might mean sharing a private gift with all your Facebook friends. And you can&#8217;t yet create multiple lists. A way to share items with only certain people and options for create multiple lists are on the product road map for next year, according to a company spokesman.</p>
<p>Speaking of social networks, Sears is taking a unique approach to the group-buying concept with Wish Together, a program launched in mid-November. With Wish Together, Sears puts at least one new item on its Facebook page (facebook.com/sears) each day. If enough people click on the item&#8217;s &#8220;Like&#8221; button before a certain time, a steep discount on the item becomes unlocked, like a diamond necklace that originally cost $285 will cost $100 at its Wish Price if it gets the required 200 &#8220;likes.&#8221; People can see the number of necessary &#8220;Likes&#8221; and time remaining (down to the second) displayed on the item&#8217;s Wish Together Facebook page.Once a Wish Together deal is unlocked, it&#8217;s available to everyone—not just those who originally &#8220;liked&#8221; it. But those who &#8220;liked&#8221; the item get an email notification from Facebook as soon as the deal is unlocked so they can buy it while supplies last. </p>

Bing is jumping into the wish-list action this holiday season with the Bing Shopping List</div>
<p>The tried and true Amazon Wish List, which has been around for 11 years, can be used to add wish-list items from any website, not just Amazon.com. This works using the site&#8217;s Universal Wish List. It can be set up by dragging an &#8220;Add to Wishlist&#8221; bookmark (<a href="http://3.ly/G82n">http://3.ly/G82n</a>) into your browser&#8217;s bookmark bar. Then you just click the bookmark whenever you&#8217;re on the specific Web page of an item you&#8217;d like to add to your Wish List. A small pop-up menu lets users designate a specific Amazon Wish List or add their own notes about an item. Universal Wish List browser extensions, or shortcuts built right into a Web browser, are available for Google&#8217;s Chrome, Apple&#8217;s Safari and Mozilla&#8217;s Firefox browser. Some online retailers like <a href="http://ModCloth.com">ModCloth.com</a>, save you a step by offering &#8220;Add To Amazon Wish List&#8221; buttons right on their websites. Amazon Wish Lists can be shared to friends through Facebook or Twitter using a link on the list&#8217;s webpage. </p>
<p>There are many Facebook apps for creating wish lists and sharing them with Facebook friends. I tried a couple apps, including a basic one called Fulfill My Wishlist (<a href="http://3.ly/3u3d">http://3.ly/3u3d</a>). It let me search a shopping portal (that uses Google Shopping in the background) for items to add to my wish list, or let me copy and paste a link for any item to appear in my list. A notes section for each item allows room for describing details like preferred size or style. This list can be emailed to friends or viewed through the Facebook app by friends who use it. </p>
<p>If you&#8217;re planning to go in on buying a pricey gift with several other people, a group-gift option like eBay&#8217;s might be the right tool for you. EBay introduced its Group Gifts feature (<a href="http://groupgifts.ebay.com">groupgifts.ebay.com</a>) in November. It lets several people pool their money to buy one item without one person chasing down those who owe money.</p>
<p>One person chooses an eBay item and selects the Buy It Now option (auction prices aren&#8217;t applicable when you need to tell the group how much they&#8217;ll definitely owe). The initiator tells the group how much he or she will pay and then shares the item with others via email, Facebook or Twitter, in hopes of getting contributions. A PayPal account is required for at least one person in the group to ultimately pay for the item, but gift contributors can chip in using credit or debit cards, and they can add their own notes to a gift. </p>
<p>Thanks to technology, there are many ways to direct your friends and family toward exactly what you want for the holidays, taking much of the guesswork out of giving and receiving this year. </p>

<p>Microsoft is rolling out a new series of updates to its Bing search service tonight, including a deep dive into a media-rich entertainment vertical, as well as other improvements to its existing offerings.</p>
<p>The software company has been pushing hard in the search arena, trying to gain market share from the dominant Google (GOOG) and the No. 2 player, Yahoo (YHOO).</p>
<p>The effort has so far included a different look and feel and very detailed results in certain niches, such as travel and health.</p>
<p>The push to improve entertainment search is a natural one, given its popularity with consumers.</p>
<p>For example, Microsoft (MSFT) will now allow users to listen to entire songs from its 6.8 million-song catalog rather than just samples of the songs.</p>
<p>It will also offer lyrics and more detailed artist profiles, as well as loads of movie and television information.</p>
<p>&#8220;We want to be one of the two major players in search and we are building out to do that,&#8221; said Yusuf Mehdi, SVP of Microsoft&#8217;s Online Audience Business. &#8220;The economic opportunity of search is as good as it gets in the business, if we can make these inroads.&#8221;</p>
<p>Those inroads have been encouraging, with Bing gaining market share. But they have also been costly, with the Online Services division bleeding cash.</p>
<p>Of course, search is an area Microsoft cannot abandon, so I would imagine the push will continue.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s good for consumers, of course, and it sure is pretty.</p>

<p>Today, Microsoft&#8217;s search engine-that-could, Bing, will begin rolling out another significant upgrade to the user interface seen by consumers.</p>
<p>The software giant also <a href="http://www.bing.com/community/blogs/search/archive/2010/03/24/new-stuff-coming-from-bing-this-spring.aspx">announced on its Bing blog</a> and at an industry conference that it would integrate status data from hot geolocation start-up Foursquare into its Bing maps as an app.</p>
<p>Bing has already been <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20091021/exclusive-guess-who-else-is-coming-to-dinner-twitter-microsoft-bing-deal-confirmed-but-so-is-facebook-bing">weaving updates from a variety of social networking sites</a>, such as Twitter and Facebook, into its services.</p>
<p>The New York-based Foursquare, a location-based social networking site that has been growing quickly recently, lets its users &#8220;check in&#8221; from a variety of locations. In Bing, it will be accessible via &#8220;Map Apps.&#8221;</p>
<p>Wrote Bing&#8217;s Todd Schwartz on the service&#8217;s blog in a post titled, &#8220;New Stuff Coming From Bing This Spring&#8221;:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>The foursquare map app is a powerful combination of the spatial canvas that Bing Maps provides, combined with foursquare&#8217;s user reputation service ability to see who has unlocked specific badges, where and who has been crowned mayor of certain locations making it easier to explore any city in the world as if you were a local. Let&#8217;s say you&#8217;re travelling to New York City for the week, but you don&#8217;t know what&#8217;s hot in Greenwich Village. Selecting the foursquare Map App in Bing Maps, and zooming into to Greenwich Village will get you tips that show you what locals are saying about the hot spots in that area. It&#8217;s like an interactive day planner, designed to help find the best things to do in that area. And if you have questions, you can always contact users through foursquare to get the inside scoop.</p></blockquote>

<p>More interesting, though, is the continuing drive to innovate Bing.</p>
<p>Starting today, pages served up by Bing&#8211;which you can see below compared with the old ones&#8211;will be more focused, with a range of new navigational elements meant to gauge search &#8220;intent&#8221; better.</p>
<p>This means relocating its &#8220;Quick Tabs&#8221; functionality to the top of searches from the side, for example, as well as a more defined &#8220;Bing Box,&#8221; which pulls information together better.</p>
<p>The goal, said Bing Director Stefan Weitz: To differentiate as much as possible from dominant search rival Google (GOOG).</p>
<p>&#8220;Google and Bing are diverging more than ever,&#8221; he said in an interview yesterday with BoomTown. &#8220;Google is focusing on gathering all the world&#8217;s information and we are focused on delivering knowledge based on a user&#8217;s intent.&#8221;</p>
<p>While it sounds a little like goobledygook, it&#8217;s probably a good competitive strategy for Microsoft (MSFT) to avoid competing directly with Google in search.</p>
<p>And so far, it seems to have worked, with Bing&#8217;s share growing slowly but surely over the year since its launch, mostly at the expense of Yahoo (YHOO).</p>
<p>Weitz calls the new look on the pages&#8211;which will start with a focus on celebrity, auto and travel searches and reach about five percent of U.S. users initially&#8211;&#8220;not a radical departure, but an evolution.&#8221;</p>
<p>And, indeed, new page results from searches for Lady Gaga and Miami Beach, for example, look only slightly different, with added navigational tabs on top and a more task-oriented feel.</p>
<p>In contrast, though, a search for Ford Mustang is dramatically different, with a more visual feel that is almost like a really informative brochure.</p>

The company’s new Bing search engine saw its market share jump to 12.5 percent from 10.9 percent in January (see table below; click to enlarge).</p>
<p>That puts it within two percentage points of Yahoo (YHOO), whose share fell to 14.1 percent from 14.5 percent and, heh-heh, within 52.7 percentage points of Google (GOOG), which also saw a decline from January to February. The company ended the month with 65.2 percent share, down from 66.3 percent in January.</p>
<p>It’s slow going, but Bing is clearly whittling away at both Google and Yahoo’s search market share. Of course, the flip side is that with Yahoo in decline, the search side of the Microsoft-Yahoo partnership isn’t showing all that much growth.</p>

<p>Yesterday, the monthly <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100309/yahoo-search-look-out-below-as-bing-gains-again-and-google-remains-as-scary-as-ever/">search market share numbers from comScore</a> (SCOR) were released, showing Microsoft (MSFT) Bing up, Yahoo (YHOO) down and Google (GOOG) maintaining its dominance.</p>
<p>In today&#8217;s <a href="http://www.hitwise.com/us/press-center/press-releases/google-searches-feb-10/">release by Experian Hitwise</a>, Bing is up again, from 9.37 percent to 9.7 percent, while Yahoo is flat at 14.57 percent, and Google gave up a scooch of share to fall to 70.95 percent from 71.49 percent.</p>
<p>This time it appears to be the vertical searches&#8211;such as autos and health&#8211;helping Bing, which has been its strategy to differentiate itself from the Google juggernaut.</p>

<p>In one of the more interesting battlefields of the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100305/google-and-microsoft-look-at-clouds-from-the-same-side-now/">multifront war between Google and Microsoft</a>, Bing Maps today added what it calls its &#8220;largest imagery update to date, adding 6.7 million square kilometers of new imagery.&#8221;</p>
<p>That includes the Russian Federation, Australia, Mexico and most places in the United States where there is existing black-and-white imagery, as well as bird’s-eye imagery for Sweden.</p>
<p>The ongoing innovations to online mapping by both Google (GOOG) and Microsoft (MSFT) have been a boon to consumers, who are getting increasingly cool and substantive looks at our world.</p>
<p>In February, Microsoft <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100211/microsoft-demos-live-fish-throwing-in-bing-maps-at-ted/">debuted a series of eye-candy features</a> in its ongoing one-upmanship with Google with a new series of enhancements to its spatial search offerings.</p>
<p>Coolest new ones from Microsoft: Indoor panoramas to move mapping inside and real-time video overlays to maps.</p>
<p>Google Maps is also not resting, adding a series of features over the last months from Google Goggles (which takes pictures of an object or location and then identifies it via search) to spoken, turn-by-turn directions on its Android-powered smartphones.</p>
<p>I, for one, can&#8217;t wait to see what&#8217;s next from these archrivals.</p>

<p>Well, BoomTown did not expect Microsoft to toss fish and bench-press crabs during its <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100210/boomtown-heads-to-ted-and-promises-no-pretentious-tweets/">demo today at the TED conference</a>, but that&#8217;s just what it did.</p>
<p>Debuting a series of eye-candy features in its ongoing oneupmanship with Google (GOOG) in the increasingly competitive mapping arena, Bing Maps architect Blaise Aguera y Arcas unveiled a new series of enhancements to its spatial search offerings, some of which are available today.</p>
<p>I am not sure which tech giant is going to prevail in the online mapping battle, but it is certain that consumers will be enjoying some innovative advances over the next few years.</p>
<p>Coolest new ones from Microsoft: Indoor panoramas to move mapping inside and real-time video overlays to maps.</p>
<p>In the demo, a Microsoft (MSFT) team was at the famous Pike Place Market in Seattle showing off some fish-tossing and giant crabs there back to Long Beach, Calif., in real time as Aguera y Arcas showed off the feature.</p>
<p>Here’s a quick summary of what Microsoft demonstrated:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p><strong>Streetside Photos application</strong> (in technology preview): Available today, this tech preview mines geo-tagged photos from Flickr, and relates them to the Streetside imagery in Bing Maps. As more people contribute and share imagery, we can reunite those photos with the location where they were taken. This application will also enable the layering of historical imagery, so people can go back in time and see a location as it existed decades prior.</p>
<p><strong>World Wide Telescope Integration</strong>: We&#8217;re not just stopping at the street, and are excited to announce our vision for the initial integration with the World Wide Telescope, a project out of Microsoft Research. Once launched, you will literally be able to<br />
&#8220;walk&#8221; outside in Streetside mode, look up, and see what&#8217;s above&#8211;way above, with constellations coming to life.</p>
<p><strong>Indoor Panoramas</strong>: At the same time as we&#8217;re getting more &#8220;universal&#8221; with World Wide Telescope, we&#8217;re also getting more intimate. Today, we&#8217;re showing the first results of our indoor panoramas work. This will provide an experience identical to Streetside, but won&#8217;t be limited to places you can take a vehicle. Whether you’re exploring Seattle’s Pike Place Market, or your favorite theme park, Bing Maps will give you the most immersive experience of the place.</p>
<p><strong>Video Overlay Technology</strong>: Today, Blaise also demonstrated a preview of our new video overlay technology, which enables real-time video to be overlaid seamlessly on street-level imagery, adding another dimension to the mapping experience. In the coming year, we think you will be pleasantly surprised with how far Bing takes this new technology. Stay tuned.</p></blockquote>

<p>It is still the bazillion-dollar question&#8211;and I do mean a bazillion dollars, since that&#8217;s about what Microsoft (MSFT) has lost online after many years of trying&#8211;whether Bing can gain some truly significant share in the search market and challenge the sector&#8217;s behemoth, Google (GOOG).</p>
<p>But there have been nascent signs of progress, helped by an aggressive attempt to keep innovating and differentiating its Bing product, which is new for Microsoft, long used to dominating.</p>
<p>And, despite various criticisms&#8211;over the use of Microsoft&#8217;s Silverlight video technology in the cool new map offering, for example&#8211;I always like to see competition, because it is the only way consumers win as these tech titans battle it out.</p>
<p>So, after the demo today, I talked to two of the Microsoft search execs there&#8211;Harry Shum, a corporate VP who is leading core search development, and Brian MacDonald, corporate VP for Core Search Program Management&#8211;about their thoughts on Bing so far.</p>

<p>This morning, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20091202/liveblogging-bing-new-features-demo-no-donuts/">Microsoft (MSFT) showed off some new features</a> of Bing and reviewed how the search service has been doing since its launch.</p>
<p>Here are the slides that the company&#8217;s top search execs used in the presentation, which included not much new stuff, except for a cool update to its mapping and getting third-party developers to do &#8220;mash-ins.&#8221;</p>

<p>Earlier today, BoomTown posted about a visit this morning from a <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20091202/bing-keeps-up-the-new-features-rollouts-boomtown-will-liveblog-a-microsoft-showcase-at-10-am/">passel of top Microsoft search execs</a> rolling into downtown San Francisco to show off even more new features for Bing.</p>
<p>I am here, but the donuts are not. Um, Google always has organic donuts!</p>
<p>In any case, the lineup included: Satya Nadella, SVP for research and development for the Online Services Division; Harry Shum, a corporate VP who is leading core search development; and Brian MacDonald, corporate VP for Core Search Program Management.</p>
<p>As I previously wrote:</p>
<p>&#8220;The rolling-stone-gathers-no-moss team at the software giant&#8211;which has been seeing some<a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20091111/bing-back-with-a-bang"> promising progress in its quest to raise its search market share</a> with its snappy new service&#8211;<a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20091111/bing-keeps-the-changes-coming-but-will-it-work">has announced an ongoing series of features</a> since <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090701/microsoft-ceo-steve-ballmer-the-full-d7-session-badda-bing">Bing was launched earlier this year</a>.&#8221;</p>
<p>It&#8217;s 10:07 am PT and I await new wisdom from Microsoft (MSFT).</p>
<p><strong>10:10 am:</strong> Nadella, the point man on Bing technology, begins.</p>
<p>He kicks off the show with some stats and a main point: Microsoft&#8217;s search share has, as his first slide reads: &#8220;Still a long way to go.&#8221;</p>
<p>At 9.9 percent versus Google&#8217;s (GOOG) share of more than 70 percent, Nadella is correct. But that is up from eight percent in a short time, so not bad.</p>
<p>Unique monthly visitors are also up from 71.7 million to 83.3 million. And perception, which was low, is now 48 percent.</p>
<p>In other words, more consumers seem to know what Bing is.</p>
<p>Personally, if I were Microsoft, I would declare victory and quit now!</p>
<p><strong>10:19 am:</strong> A demo dude arrives to show &#8220;task&#8221; pages, which cluster around intent of searchers.</p>
<p>These are cool, and he&#8217;s showing a John Mayer page, which includes concerts and more. I hate <em>that</em> whiny singing dude, demo dude. He was mean to Jennifer Aniston, so he is dead to me.</p>
<p>Phew, the demo dude moves on to Miami. I love Miami. Trying to gauge intent, there is a slideshow available, better weather (rainy but 82 degrees!) and flight info. Plus no John Mayer!</p>
<p>Next, demo dude does movies. He shows times for the freaky &#8220;Paranormal Activity&#8221; and then offers hi-def trailers. Demo dude&#8217;s wife wants him to see it. I advise against it, unless he wants to be looking under the bed for the rest of his life.</p>
<p>Now the cheeky Softies, showing off how good Bing&#8217;s info is about Apple, (AAPL); display financial info and even the customer service number. I contemplate ordering a Mac.</p>
<p>This is followed by moves through universities and diseases (with related drug cards).</p>
<p><strong>10:30 am:</strong> The demo dude moves on to an early look-see of Bing&#8217;s its upcoming Facebook deployment, using its already-announced Visual Search.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s apparently going to be very easy to be a stalker on Bing!</p>
<p>On to Twitter, with access to tweets in a variety of ways, from the most tweeted to most popular. Ashton Kutcher pops up like an inevitable Twitter weed, of course.</p>
<p>Nadella comes back and explains that this is being done to &#8220;browse to your intent.&#8221;</p>
<p>And now it is time for a mobile search update.</p>
<p>Guess what? Intent and search completion in a mobile context is time-sensitive! Who knew?</p>
<p>Actually, I did know and so did the whole world. Here is my typical mobile search: &#8220;Where the *&#038;%# is that restaurant/kid party/gas station?&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>10:38 am:</strong> A new demo dude (let&#8217;s call him demo dude #2) is showing off the recent mobile app for Bing, which came out a few weeks ago.</p>
<p>Lots of maps, although he says, &#8220;it&#8217;s more than just finding something on a map.&#8221;</p>
<p>Demo dude #2 types a &#8220;T,&#8221; which stands for AT&#038;T, and stock info pops up.</p>
<p>He talks into the phone now for weather in Redmond, Wash., where Microsoft has its HQ. Cold and rainy! Which is a shocker for the Seattle area this time of year.</p>
<p>Demo dude #2 does movies and sports, showing a lot of what is on the Web. This is not much different than many mobile apps, but it works nicely.</p>
<p>Nadella seems to be promising an iPhone app soon too, noting that Microsoft will have them for all platforms, but he does not say it outright.</p>
<p><strong>10:47 am:</strong> Now, Nadella is onto spatial search, which I like to call &#8220;oooh-that&#8217;s-pretty search.&#8221;</p>
<p>Therefore, we need a third demo dude. Demo dude #3 has a beard!</p>
<p>But he has a real new feature! A new mapping technology, powered by Microsoft&#8217;s Silverlight video technology, in beta within minutes. <a href="http://www.bing.com/maps/explore">You can see it in action here</a>.</p>
<p>It includes a Google competitor that has been called &#8220;streetside&#8221; before, with several new twists, which demo dude #3 is calling a &#8220;mash-in&#8221; (compared to a mashup, which is done a lot with Google by third-party folks).</p>
<p>The demo appears very seamless in comparison, using 3-D modeling and photorealism by integrating its <a href="http://photosynth.net/">Photosynth</a> research work.</p>
<p>He shows a cool look at a museum and then the French American International School in San Francisco.</p>
<p>In this demo, demo dude #3 was looking at restaurants, which shows reviews and also the whole scene around it, including info on the parking garage you can see.</p>
<p>There is now a Map App gallery, most of which made by Microsoft right now.</p>
<p><strong>11:07 am:</strong> A Twitter dude is brought up to show how the microblogger is part of this new mapping stuff from Microsoft, which he calls an &#8220;ecosystem.&#8221;</p>
<p>Using new geolocating tools on the microblogging service, it shows all kinds of geospatial information of tweets.</p>
<p>Twitter recently signed a data-mining deal with Microsoft, as well as Google.</p>
<p>So, it looks like Microsoft and Google are really going to be duking it out in the online mapping of everyone&#8217;s lives. And I look forward to this fight and the eventuality that they will want to map my every move. Bing it on!</p>
<p><strong>11:10 am:</strong> Nadella wraps up, essentially trying to keep differentiating Bing from Google.</p>
<p>&#8220;We do hundreds of experiments a day,&#8221; he says, releasing as many features as possible.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s a good stance for a lesser competitor to have: Bing, We Try Harder!</p>
<p>Big words for Microsoft: Intent versus query. Whole page versus blue links. Minimizing time versus task completing. Search hit-or-miss versus dialog.</p>
<p><strong>11:16 am:</strong> Q&#038;A!</p>
<p>A question about human versus technology in perfecting this intent goal.</p>
<p>MacDonald and Nadella note that humans are important, but Bing is built around the big computing systems that do this automatically.</p>
<p>Will the structured page be indexable? Meaning Google? No real answer! But I would love to see Microsoft go all Rupert Murdoch on the search giant!</p>
<p>Then comes a question about premium or &#8220;non-Google&#8221; content. Nadella avoids the question and instead focuses on the &#8220;scaffolding&#8221; the data.</p>
<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re not as focused on getting exclusive content,&#8221; he says flatly. Uh-oh, publishers! As I reported, Microsoft is not forking over the dough.</p>
<p>MacDonald also tries to stress that Google wants folks off its site and onto the query result and that Bing is focusing on delivering that result right.</p>
<p>Everything is not a command line, declares MacDonald.</p>
<p>On a question of openness and the need to use Microsoft Silverlight technology for some of the rich visual mapping, versus Ajax, Nadella points out the service is too small not to be. Good point!</p>
<p>But Microsoft execs, who often shove their tech right down consumers&#8217; throats, are nearly apologetic about having to use Silverlight (except they add, of course, that it is better!).</p>
<p>Nadella gets another question about paying to de-index Google.</p>
<p>&#8220;There is no real intent here that is focused on getting a whole bunch of content that is de-indexed from Google,&#8221; he said.</p>
<p>Some more questions about Bing monetization (it had better make money!) and global share.</p>
<p>Since Google is cleaning the clocks of everyone even worse abroad, Bing is focusing on the U.S.</p>
<p>I ask about how the Yahoo (YHOO) deal is going. &#8220;Well!&#8221;</p>
<p>And while Yahoo seems to be losing some search share to Microsoft, Nadella said his company would provide any &#8220;core&#8221; technology Yahoo wants to use given that Microsoft will be providing the search platform.</p>
<p>It would have been nice if Yahoo search had done this itself, of course, but Nadella said Yahoo could use the mapping and even task pages.</p>

<p>Besides the joy of driving the Google (GOOG) search bigfoots nuts&#8211;said one exec at the search giant to me recently in an indignant tone: &#8220;You know, we have all those features ready and could add them anytime!&#8221;&#8211;it&#8217;s probably fun to crow about being innovative at Microsoft (MSFT), not exactly the company that would pop to mind when that Silicon Valley prayer word is invoked.</p>
<p>So, what&#8217;s next? BoomTown has no idea, but I will be letting you know as soon as I do, via liveblogging the event, which starts at 10 am!</p>
<p><strong>UPDATE:</strong> <a href="http://www.neowin.net/news/main/09/12/02/bing-set-to-announce-new-features-today">Tom Warren at Neowin.net</a> speculates that the features could include a &#8220;Bing Explorer,&#8221; which &#8220;aims to seamlessly search and browse to find, re-find and discover.&#8221; Would that this event were that interesting!</p>

<p>Until the <a href="http://www.bing.com/community/blogs/search/archive/2009/11/30/top-bing-searches-in-2009.aspx">Microsoft (MSFT) search service revealed on its blog</a> last night that Perez Hilton&#8211;the irksome entertainment gossip blogger&#8211;beat out &#8220;Transformers&#8221; hottie Megan Fox and &#8220;Twilight&#8221; hottie-er Robert Pattinson for the top celebrity searched using Bing in 2009.</p>
<p>Clearly, its algorithm needs some tweaking by real people.</p>
<p>Bing is the first of the top search lists to come up for 2009, to be followed soon by Google (GOOG) and Yahoo (YHOO).</p>
<p>&#8220;If you&#8217;re curious how we determined the top searches, we analyzed billions of search queries and developed the list based on searches made with Bing,&#8221; wrote Bing GM Danielle Tiedt.</p>
<p>&#8220;Not surprisingly, we saw a lot of folks using Bing for quick access to favorite sites like Facebook, MSN, YouTube and Craigslist. We also saw a lot of more complex searches such as product related queries in which people used Bing to help decide what MP3 player to buy and travel searches to help find the best deals on a tropical vacation.&#8221;</p>
<p>But this time of year, it is mostly about the lists, so Bing noted that Michael Jackson&#8211;no surprise&#8211;was the top trending topic, followed in order by: Twitter, swine flu, stock market, Farrah Fawcett, Patrick Swayze, Cash for Clunkers, Jon and Kate Gosselin, Billy Mays and Jaycee Dugard.</p>
<p>In other words, Bing users are celebrity death-obsessed, econalypse-worried, plague-wary people who cannot be without information about the worst married couple ever.</p>

<p>This is one of those weeks for Bing, which started off yesterday by renaming its video properties on MSN, now integrated with search, to <a href="http://www.bing.com/videos">Bing Videos</a>. Microsoft also rejiggered its <a href="http://www.bing.com/community/blogs/search/archive/2009/11/10/bing-maps-is-looking-good.aspx">Bing Maps</a>.</p>
<p>And today, the company is rolling out more features, including integration related to diet and nutrition with fancy search service Wolfram|Alpha, an &#8220;enhanced hover preview&#8221; and full-page weather and events results to add to its niche search offerings.</p>
<p>But whether all this will spell significant changes in market share compared to dominant rival Google (GOOG) is still an open question, with Microsoft (MSFT) eking out solid gains since Bing launched.</p>
<p>Today, <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20091111/bing-back-with-a-bang/">Hitwise figures have Bing up seven percent</a> to 9.57 percent in October, at the expense of both Google and Yahoo (YHOO).</p>
<p>Money is also coming in slightly better. A recent report by IDC noted that Bing&#8217;s search revenue has gained 6.1 percent to 6.8 percent from the second-to-last quarter.</p>
<p>But spending on advertising, as well as these new features, is also costly.</p>
<p>Still, Microsoft is pressing on.</p>
<p>The Wolfram feature, for example, adds a nutrition quick tab when searching on food items, as well as a body-mass index tool.</p>

<p>Bing will also improve the ability of users to get quick info by hovering over a link. Frankly, this annoys me  more than bad clicks, but most people will probably like seeing snapshots of the actual Web sites, a search-within-this-site box and deep links.</p>

According to <a href="http://www.hitwise.com/us/press-center/press-releases/google-searches-oct-09?j=13425356&amp;e=kara@allthingsd.com&amp;l=1771711_HTML&amp;u=159130959&amp;mid=34732&amp;jb=0">the latest figures from Hitwise</a>, Bing’s share of the search market increased seven percent in October to 9.57 percent, evidently at the expense of both Google (GOOG) and Yahoo (YHOO). The search market share for both companies declined by one percent, Google’s to 70.60 percent and Yahoo’s to 16.14 percent. (See table below; click to enlarge.)</p>
<p>Good news for Microsoft (MSFT). Clearly, Bing’s traffic is not yet leveling out. That said, it should be noted that according to comScore (SCOR), whose search data are most highly regarded by Wall Street, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20091013/bing-still-has-zing-google-more-bling-but-yahoo-no-thing/">Bing never lost search market share in the U.S.</a><br />

<p>In it, an Edward Cullen type, aided by a comely young woman, is looking for a place to &#8220;eat.&#8221;</p>

Because while being first is generating quite a bit of attention for Bing&#8211;which is for once leading search innovation instead of following Google’s&#8211;that’s about all it’s good for right now.</p>
<p>Why? As research house Jefferies &#038; Co. explains in a research note to clients today, if Twitter hasn’t yet managed to transform its popularity into significant revenue, how will Microsoft (MSFT) or Google (GOOG)?</p>
<p>&#8220;While we believe Microsoft pulled off a little bit of a media/PR coup by announcing the Twitter deal and forcing Google to rush into a similar deal, we do not believe Microsoft will be able to capitalize on its first mover advantage in the short run since neither search engines nor Twitter have figured out how to monetize the data streams from Twitters (affectionately known as Tweets),&#8221; Jefferies analysts wrote.</p>
<p>&#8220;We believe that users focused on real-time data would be less tolerant to advertising,&#8221; the research note adds. &#8220;That said, we can see new business models emerging down the line where the realtime tweets blended with local information (traffic conditions, flight arrivals, etc.) could be more easily monetized and where &#8216;premium&#8217; tweets from celebrities could be included for a premium subscription. For now, the real-time data integration would mean more refreshes from the users to get up to the minute updates, which should translate into higher query volume, all else equal.&#8221;<br />

<p>Microsoft digital head Qi Lu took to the stage at the <a href="http://www.web2summit.com/web2009">Web 2.0 Summit</a> conference this morning, where he confirmed a &#8220;strategic&#8221; deal with both Facebook and Twitter to integrate real-time information into Microsoft&#8217;s Bing search service.</p>
<p>BoomTown <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20091021/exclusive-guess-who-else-is-coming-to-dinner-twitter-microsoft-bing-deal-confirmed-but-so-is-facebook-bing/">broke news of those twin deals</a> earlier today.</p>
<p>Bing&#8217;s <a href="http://www.bing.com/twitter">Twitter integration in beta form is now live here</a> (see an image of it below; click on it to make it larger).</p>

Facebook&#8217;s integration will come later, said Microsoft (MSFT).</p>
<p>Before announcing the deal, Lu&#8211;who is a quintessential techie&#8211;first went a bit deep into the weeds to talk about &#8220;how we think about search.&#8221;</p>
<p>Said Lu: &#8220;To start with, we think about search holistically&#8230;it&#8217;s about user intent. What it amounts to is that you are trying to build a mind reader.&#8221;</p>
<p>Top MSN exec Yusuf Mehdi then bounded onstage to talk about the deals with Twitter and Facebook and do a demo, which was what the audience gathered in San Francisco wanted to hear about and see.</p>
<p>&#8220;If today&#8217;s search is about getting to the UPS or the FedEx site, tomorrow is much more complicated,&#8221; said Mehdi, who described the deals as &#8220;strategic.&#8221;</p>
<p>Google (GOOG) is also in talks with both Twitter and Facebook about a similar arrangement, but Microsoft&#8217;s move was a clear one-upsmanship with its search rival.</p>
<p>And what Mehdi showed was impressive, with the ability to sort tweets in a number of ways.</p>
<p>Such information in search will obviously improve results.</p>
<p>Lu gave few specific monetary or operational details of the service&#8211;such as if Facebook and Twitter get a cut of its search advertising revenue or if Microsoft will archive the status updates&#8211;mostly focusing on Twitter, since it is first to roll out.</p>
<p>&#8220;This is just the beginning,&#8221; said Lu. &#8220;The Twitter corpus&#8230;is still evolving and emerging.&#8221;</p>
<p>Added Lu at the end: &#8220;Give us a try!&#8221;</p>

One of the most interesting things going on today on the Internet is the notion of the real time web. The idea of accessing data in real time has been an elusive goal in the world of search. Web indexes in search engines update at pretty amazing rates, given what it takes to crawl the entire web and index it for searching, but getting that to “real time” has been challenging.</p>
<p>The explosive popularity of Twitter is the best example of this opportunity. Twitter is producing millions of tweets every minute on every subject you can imagine. The power of those tweets as a form of data that can be surfaced in search is enormous. Innovative services like Twitter give us access to public opinion and thoughts in a way that has not before been possible. From important social and political issues to keeping friends up to date on the minute-by-minute of our daily lives, the web is getting more and more real time.</p>
<p>Search needs to keep up. Shortly after we launched Bing, we did an experiment with the team at Twitter, where we took a fairly small number of “celebrities” from Twitter and provided access to their tweets as part of the search result. Here is a great example.</p>
<p>But what if we take that to the next level? What if we indexed basically the whole public Twitter stream and made it available to customers?</p>
<p>We’re glad you asked that. Because today at Web 2.0 we announced that working with those clever birds over at Twitter, we now have access to the entire public Twitter feed and have a beta of Bing Twitter search for you to play with (in the US, for now). Try it out. The Bing and Twitter teams want to know what you think.</p>
<p>How does this all work?</p>
<p>Were you as fascinated by the 6-year-old boy floating away in a balloon as we were? Was it a hoax? We know that people are going to twitter more and more for information surrounding all the latest chatter.</p>
<p>You can now search for what people are saying all over the web about breaking news topics, your favorite celebrity, hometown sports team, and anything else you use Twitter to stay on top of today.</p>
<p>If you want to keep an eye on this topic, you can just watch the Tweets roll in. Or, click on &#8220;See more Tweets about…&#8221; to go to a page full of Tweets. On that page, you can change the ordering to “Best Match.” Here we arrange Tweets differently. If someone has a lot of followers, his/her Tweet may get ranked higher. If a tweet is exactly the same as other Tweets, it will get ranked lower. For example, I saw a Tweet from ABC News ranked pretty high in the Best Match mode during the &#8220;boy in the balloon&#8221; fiasco. By the way, you won’t see any of your tweets if you protected or deleted them, and tweets don’t last more than 7 days in our index.</p>
<p>Are you a Taylor Swift fan? Just think of all the links that are shared on twitter that have to do with Taylor. To help you find these links we sift through and find the most interesting and hot trending links that other search engines usually don’t pick up on. Below you can see a couple of interesting links shared by Twitter users&#8211;some news and some gossip.</p>
<p>Instead of the usual captions that are used for links, we decided to give you a “social caption” and show you what people are saying about these links.</p>

<p>According to sources, Microsoft (MSFT) digital head Qi Lu will announce the deal onstage in a few hours at the Web 2.0 Summit.</p>
<p>BoomTown <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20091021/update-is-microsoft-poised-to-integrate-twitter-into-bing/">reported earlier today that the Microsoft data-mining deal with Twitter was poised</a> to be announced.</p>
<p>But the addition of Facebook raises the stakes considerably because it has the largest pool of status updates, despite all the hype around Twitter. Facebook has previously stated that it has 40 million updates a day, on average, from its 300 million-plus audience.</p>
<p>Twitter has been talking to Google (GOOG) about a similar arrangement, and, according to sources, so has Facebook.</p>
<p>But the deal is a definite blow to the dominant search engine, since&#8211;for the first time&#8211;data will be available on Bing that are not available on Google.</p>
<p>Neither of the services is expected to be up and running for weeks, if not months. But there is the possibility of a demo today by Qi Lu of what it will look like.</p>
<p>What&#8217;s interesting about the deals, which have been in the works for several weeks, is that they will be very different.</p>
<p>Much of what is posted on Twitter is public by design, while Facebook users prefer the closed nature of the service to disperse a wide variety of personal information only to their friends, and they want to control it.</p>
<p>Thus, sources said, not all Facebook updates will be included in the real-time feed to be searched by Bing, but only those its users choose to make available to the wider public. Facebook will apparently provide users with a number of new tools to do so.</p>
<p>BoomTown <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20091008/twitter-talking-separately-to-microsoft-and-also-google-about-big-data-mining-deals/">first reported several weeks ago that Twitter was in advanced talks</a> with both the search rivals about such a real-time search arrangement.</p>
<p>When asked about the talks onstage at Web 2.0 yesterday, Twitter CEO Evan Williams turned coy, according to numerous reports, joking &#8220;Whose deals?”</p>
<p>But, in fact, the San Francisco-based microblogging service was very much engaged in dealmaking aimed at gaining more visibility for the billions of tweets from its 54 million monthly users.</p>
<p>And so was Facebook, and it is probably a little irksome to Twitter that the rival social networking site will steal some of the thunder over the deal, which is sure to break out in the blogosphere today.</p>

<p>The deals with Microsoft might include a payment of several million dollars to both Facebook and Twitter, along with various revenue-sharing proposals that would give them a piece of the advertising revenue made from search results.</p>
<p>Doing these kinds of data deals with big search players does make a lot of sense, since it would be hard for both companies to turbocharge their own search engines without running into the big cash-laden guns at both Google and Microsoft, which recently launched the Bing search service.</p>
<p>Being deeply integrated into big search services would give both companies an even huger footprint.</p>
<p>Microsoft did a small experiment this past summer by integrating Twitter data into search results, starting with tweets of bloggers like me.</p>
<p>And the company provides search services to the Silicon Valley-based Facebook, part of a major investment deal it made several years ago.</p>
<p>Both Microsoft and Google had separately contemplated buying Twitter and Facebook in deals that never materialized.</p>
<p>But, if they both strike data deals with Twitter and Facebook, they will get the next best thing&#8211;an ability to offer all that real-time information to the masses from its most innovative sources.</p>

<p>According to sources, Microsoft is close to striking a nonexclusive data-mining deal with Twitter to integrate the microblogging service&#8217;s full feed into the results of its Bing search service.</p>
<p>News of the deal, which was still being worked on by engineers and execs at both the software giant and the start-up as late as yesterday, could even come as early as today at the Web 2.0 Summit conference in San Francisco.</p>
<p>Qi Lu, the head of Microsoft&#8217;s online services division, is <a href="http://www.web2summit.com/web2009/public/schedule/detail/9179">being interviewed at the event</a> at 11:30 am PDT.</p>
<p>Note: Lu is scheduled to appear onstage after Yahoo (YHOO) CEO Carol Bartz, who is now too sick to attend, the company said. She also missed Yahoo&#8217;s third-quarter conference call due to an unspecified illness.</p>
<p>Thus, Lu is the main event of Web 2.0 tomorrow morning and it would be a good place to make a big announcement, if the talks are successful.</p>
<p>But sources close to the situation caution that the deal could still run into a snag and was not yet complete, although it seems more likely than not that a deal will soon be struck with Microsoft (MSFT) first and then Google (GOOG), which is the other company Twitter has been negotiating with.</p>
<p>BoomTown had <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20091008/twitter-talking-separately-to-microsoft-and-also-google-about-big-data-mining-deals/">previously reported that Twitter was in advanced talks</a> with both the search rivals about just such a real-time search arrangement.</p>
<p>There could be other possibilities on the table, said sources, such as one of the big companies advertising on Twitter or any number of other Twitter partnerships with either one.</p>
<p>When asked about the talks onstage at Web 2.0 yesterday, Twitter CEO Evan Williams turned coy, according to numerous reports, joking &#8220;Whose deals?”</p>
<p>But, in fact, Twitter, which is based in San Francisco, is very much engaged in dealmaking in this regard.</p>
<p>Here is what I wrote previously, as to what and why:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>Sources said a number of scenarios are being discussed to compensate Twitter for its huge and potentially valuable trove of real-time and content-sharing information, generated from the data stream of billions of tweets from its 54 million monthly users.</p>
<p>These include a number of structures, including a payment of several million dollars to Twitter, along with various revenue-sharing proposals that would give Twitter a piece of the revenue made from search results.</p>
<p>The deals, stressed sources close to the situation, are nonexclusive, especially because Twitter’s management is keen to remain independent and also nonpartisan in the growing search battle between Google and Microsoft.</p>
<p>This means Yahoo&#8211;which recently struck a search-technology and online-advertising partnership with Microsoft&#8211;could also license Twitter’s feed to make its search results even more robust, although Boomtown could not determine if the company is in talks with the San Francisco start-up.</p>
<p>Sources said it is also possible that no agreement would be reached with either company.</p>
<p>And execs at Twitter, Microsoft and Google had no comment when asked about talks.</p>

<p>Twitter has also been considering offering premium services to these groups and is contemplating some form of advertising offering.</p>
<p>But, most of all, Silicon Valley’s hot start-up is focusing now on spurring growth and engagement, along with fine-tuning its product offering.</p>
<p>Being deeply integrated into big search services would give Twitter a huge footprint.</p>

<p>How much indexing of its data Twitter will allow is unclear, but the company has certainly bought itself time to think carefully about all its options, given that it now has a lot of money in the bank.</p>
<p>Late last month, Twitter raised another $100 million in new funding, after already having raised $55 million.</p>
<p>This has given it a $1 billion valuation, despite negligible revenue.</p>
<p>The valuation also effectively stated that the innovative company was pretty much putting itself out of play to be acquired and is very interested in forging its own destiny.</p>
<p>Both Google and Microsoft execs have contemplated the idea of buying Twitter in the past, although no serious talks ever moved forward.</p>
<p>If they both strike data deals with Twitter, they will get the next best thing&#8211;an ability to offer all the information disseminated on Twitter in search results.</p></blockquote>

<p>According to the latest data from comScore, which are the most widely regarded by Wall Street, Bing has not lost search market share in the U.S., as some recent reports had suggested.</p>
<p>The September qSearch report, which was released to clients today, shows the Microsoft (MSFT) search service with a 9.4 percent share, compared to 9.3 percent a month earlier.</p>
<p>Dominant search giant Google (GOOG) also saw a slight uptick to almost 65 percent. Yahoo (YHOO), which just began a $100 million marketing campaign, saw share drop a half-point to just under 19 percent.</p>
<p>Both the market shares of Ask and AOL remained constant at almost four percent and three percent, respectively.</p>
<p>The comScore (SCOR) data on Bing counter two earlier reports that showed declines.</p>
<p>Here is J.P. Morgan analyst Imran Khan on the new data, as well as a table from comScore (click on it to make it larger):</p>

After months of slight but steady increases in market share, Bing&#8217;s percentage of the search market in the United States and abroad fell in September for the first time.</p>
<p>New metrics from Web analytics firm StatCounter show Bing’s share of the U.S. search market in September falling to 8.5 percent from 9.6 percent in August. Its share of the global market declined as well, slipping to  3.25 percent from 3.58 percent.</p>
<p>Microsoft’s (MSFT) new search partner, Yahoo (YHOO), also suffered a decline. Its market share fell to 9.4 percent from 10.50 percent in the U.S. and to 4.37 percent from 4.84 abroad. Meanwhile, Google&#8217;s (GOOG) September share rose to 80 percent from 77.8 percent in the U.S. and to 90.54 percent from 90 percent globally. (See chart below; click to enlarge.)<br />

<p> “The trend has been downwards for Bing since mid August,” <a href="http://gs.statcounter.com/press/bing-records-first-monthly-decline-since-launch">StatCounter CEO Aodhan Cullen said in a statement</a>. &#8220;The wheels haven’t fallen off but the underlying trend must be a little worrying for Microsoft.&#8221;</p>
<p>Mmm, I doubt it. While a month of slight decline might herald the beginning of a trend, it certainly doesn’t guarantee one, especially in search, where surges and declines in market share are quite common. Furthermore, we haven’t yet seen search metrics from <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090917/bing-growing-8-times-faster-than-google/">Nielsen</a>, <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090922/more-modest-results-for-microsofts-marketing-blitz-now-its-yahoos-turn/">comScore</a> (SCOR), and <a href="http://www.hitwise.com/us/press-center/press-releases/google-searches-aug-09/">Hitwise</a>. And all three showed Bing gaining share in August, a month that <a href="http://gs.statcounter.com/press/bing-slows-in-race-against-google">Statcounter claimed shows the  beginning of a downward trend</a>.</p>

<p>Think of Microsoft&#8217;s innovation as iTunes Cover Flow for search. And though it currently works only for mainstream queries (celebrities, dog breeds, iPhone apps, FBI&#8217;s Most Wanted, etc.) it&#8217;s quite impressive. And if Microsoft (MSFT) works quickly to extend it beyond its currently limited purview, Visual Search could do much to differentiate Bing from Google (GOOG). Certainly, Google doesn&#8217;t offer anything quite like it at the moment.</p>
