According to numerous sources inside and outside the company, Yahoo is poised to slam dunk–I apologize, but sports puns are so easy–an acquisition of an online sports site this week.

And, predicted several of those sources, it is most likely to be San Francisco-based Citizen Sports, a maker of popular apps and games that allow fans to interact on the Apple (AAPL) iPhone and Facebook.

Interestingly, Yahoo (YHOO) CEO Carol Bartz is the keynote speaker at the high-profile sports business conference IMG World Sports Congress Wednesday morning in Los Angeles.

There is a plethora of interesting Web sports sites for Yahoo to choose from, including Yardbarker, SB Nation and Rotowire.

With Yahoo’s strong sports content business, especially in fantasy sports and news, and Bartz’s recent statements about making smaller talent and tech acquisitions–as well as the company’s recent focus on social networking and mobile integration–Citizen Sports is a perfect choice.

Citizen Sports started off in 2005 as ProTrade, an “athlete stock market entertainment company,” with $10 million from Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers partners Kevin Compton and Doug Mackenzie through Radar Ventures.

Other investors included Kleiner Perkins partner Will Hearst, said the Citizen Sports Web site, “as well as major sports figures, including former Dallas Cowboys quarterback and three-time Super Bowl champ Troy Aikman; Arizona Diamondbacks General Partner Jeff Moorad; legendary NFL Hall of Fame coach Bill Walsh; and Northgate Capital Venture founder Brent Jones, the former all-pro San Francisco 49ers tight end.”

But the site has morphed into an innovative digital enabler of interaction among fans of all kinds of sports, via its fantasy sports games and Sportacular iPhone app, as well as numerous apps on Facebook.

It also has tight relationships with Sports Illustrated magazine and other sports partners.

Most interesting is that one of its co-founders, Jeff Ma, was one of the members of the infamous MIT blackjack team, made famous in the book, “Bringing Down the House” and the film, “21.”

It is unclear how much Citizen Sports would sell for, but estimates put its price at about $40 to $50 million.

Both Citizen Sports and Yahoo declined to comment.

Palm (PALM), which has been trying to turn itself around, created a stir last month when it admitted that its phones weren’t selling as well as it had expected. Palm warned that its revenues for the year would be “well below” forecasts.

But Redwood City, Calif.-based Self Aware Games say they liked Palm’s webOS software enough that they took a chance about a year ago and started developing poker and blackjack games like “Word Ace” and “Card Ace: Blackjack” for Palm devices first, closely followed by versions for the iPhone and Facebook.

Since I posted an interview with Social Gaming Network’s Shervin Pishevar today on the announcement of his $15 million funding, it seems only sporting to post this lively video interview I also did with his main competitor, Mark Pincus of Zynga, recently too.

Zynga, named after Pincus’s dog, is one of the two main social-gaming networks that are competing for audience by offering highly interactive games of all kinds. Its aim is to be more engaging and create a series of addictive games that users will return to again and again.

Pincus, who also founded the Tribe social-networking site, is a longtime entrepreneur. I met him way back when as a reporter at the Washington Post when he and Sunil Paul launched one of the few start-ups–Freeloader–in the D.C. area.

And I can report that Pincus is as jumpy and energetic today as he was 15 years ago.

He has certainly been busy lining up a spate of fancy investors, garnering $10 million in funding in January, including from: Union Square Ventures, Foundry Group, Avalon Ventures, Pilot Group, along with personal investments from Silicon Valley players Reid Hoffman and Peter Thiel.

Zynga, which is larger than rival SGN, claims 2.3 million total daily active users across Facebook, with its Texas Hold’em game being the largest it offers. Other games include Sea Wars, Blackjack, Attack! and Scramble.

As I said in my SGN post, while BoomTown often makes fun of viral apps, most of which are faddish and juvenile, the better-made gaming apps actually are likely to be a real business over time, as long they remain engaging and fun to play as the classic real-life games are.

Zynga plans on making money through ads, including creating its own ad network for other gamers, as well as via the sale of virtual goods and premium offerings.

Here’s a chat with Pincus at Zynga’s offices (Pincus owns the building, by the way, which also houses a bunch of other Web 2.0 start-ups) in San Francisco:

That was one iPhone early adopter’s crass assessment of his feelings of self-worth, after Apple unexpectedly cut the price of the device by a third–just two months after it arrived at market. At an unveiling of a new line of iPod music and video players in San Francisco yesterday, CEO Steve Jobs said Apple was dropping the price of its 8-gigabyte iPhone from $599 to $399 to drive sales of the device over the crucial holiday selling period. “The customer-satisfaction numbers for the iPhone are off the charts,” Jobs said. “The customer-sat[isfaction] numbers are higher for the iPhone than for any Apple product ever. They love it. But we want to make the iPhone even more affordable for even more people this holiday season. So we’re going to do something about that today. We’re not going to sell it for $599 anymore.”

Now price cuts for cellphones aren’t unusual. Samsung’s Blackjack and Motorola’s Razr both saw rapid price cuts following their respective debuts. But neither was launched into a market of monomanaical loyalists willing to camp out on a sidewalk overnight just to be among the first to own one–many of whom are today feeling a bit used. “Over time I have owned a 3G iPod, original Shuffle, iBook G4, iMac, new Shuffle, 4G iPod, video iPod, iPod mini and now the iPhone,” one wrote in a post to everythingiPhone. “I can see updates to the product line being made over time, but $200 in two months is a kick in the nads to EVERYONE who bought an iPhone.”

Perhaps, especially if the cut was made possible not by a sudden drop in component prices but a calculated overpricing conceived to exploit early-adopter demand. But ultimately, those who don’t think the iPhone was worth $599 when it debuted probably shouldn’t have bought it. “That’s technology,” Jobs told USA Today. “If they bought it this morning, they should go back to where they bought it and talk to them. If they bought it a month ago, well, that’s what happens in technology.”

One last point worth noting here: Early adopters probably aren’t the only folks to be taken aback by the sudden and precipitous drop in the iPhone’s price. Apple’s rivals in the handset market must be absolutely reeling. Here they were scrambling to produce iPhone-like, and iPhone-lite devices they believed would compete with a $600 phone they could easily underprice. Now, they’ve got to compete with a $399 device that is perhaps one of the best examples of Apple’s design and engineering prowess. And they’ve got to do it in time for the holiday shopping season …

Here are a few questions about computers I’ve received recently from people like you, and my answers. I have edited and restated the questions a bit, for readability. This week my mailbox contained questions about sending large files over the Internet, buying a combo PDA/cellphone, and sharing music on the same local area network.

Did you review a tool that would make it easier to send large files over the Internet? What was it?

Yes. It’s called Pando, and is a free download at www.pando.com. But there’s an even simpler service, which works right from within a Web browser and doesn’t require the download or installation of any software. It’s called YouSendIt and is at yousendit.com. Both work on the same general principle: Instead of emailing a huge file, you upload it to these services. They then send an email to your intended recipient that merely contains a link or tiny special attachment. When the recipient clicks on the link or special attachment, the file is downloaded to his or her computer, without having passed through his or her email inbox. Both services have free versions, and also paid versions which offer greater capacity and other features.

My Handspring Visor has expired. Since I have also have a vintage Nokia cellphone, would you recommend a combo PDA/cellphone with “useable” keyboard or should I buy a distinct replacement PDA and cellphone?

It all depends on your budget, and your tolerance for carrying two devices. But the stand-alone PDA is fading, and is harder and harder to find. If you bought a Palm Treo phone that uses the Palm operating system, such as the $199 Treo 680, you’d have a decent phone with a built-in PDA that works very much like your Visor, only with more speed and added features. On the other hand, if you’d like a change, there are many Windows Mobile phone/PDA combo devices that can cost even less, like the Samsung Blackjack.

If you’re content to keep the Nokia for phone calls, Palm still makes some standalone PDAs which work pretty much like your Visor, only better — like the $99 Z22.

I read your article on using iTunes to share music with others on the same local area network. Must both computers be turned on in order for this to work?

Yes, all the computers whose music you want to share must not only be turned on, but iTunes must be running on them.

I attended the iPhone launch event, and was able to use one for a little while. That’s too brief an encounter to allow me to write a proper review. But I can say that it has the largest and most beautiful screen I’ve ever seen on a cellphone, even though it’s incredibly thin. It felt great in my hand. It has a brilliant new user interface; the handsomest email program and Web browser I’ve ever seen on a phone; a full-blown iPod music and video player built in; and even a cool new voicemail system.

The iPhone has some potential downsides — it doesn’t use a physical keyboard, instead relying on a virtual keyboard on the screen, which may put off heavy email users. It runs on the relatively slow EDGE cellular data network, though that flaw is partly offset by the fact that it can also use speedy Wi-Fi wireless networking. And, with a $499 base price, it’s expensive.

Still, the iPhone made my relatively new Treo 700p seem primitive in many respects when I compared them side by side. And the Apple product isn’t Palm’s only problem.

Palm’s position as the design leader in smart phones has been under assault for months. Major phone makers like Motorola and Nokia have introduced models that have most of the Treo’s capabilities but are thinner, sleeker and lighter — and much less expensive.

The Treo maker is starting to respond, but haltingly. It has brought out a couple of slightly smaller new models, but they’re no match in sleekness or style for competitors like the Motorola Q. They also aren’t as cheap. They do, though, have some advantages in software and functionality that, for some users, will make them preferable.

I’ve been testing the latest skinny contender, the Samsung BlackJack, along with Palm’s newest Treo, the slimmed-down Treo 750. Both of these phones — like the Apple phone — run on the Cingular Wireless network. Both also use Microsoft‘s Windows Mobile software.

The new Treo 750 is slimmed down a bit from the familiar Treo 700 and 650 models. The 750 is also a little shorter, because it does away with the protruding antenna. In addition, it’s a hair thinner and about 16% lighter.

But next to the new Samsung BlackJack, the Treo 750 looks bulky. The BlackJack is a striking, all-black model in the slim tradition of the Motorola Q. It manages to cram a full keyboard, like the Treo’s, into a body that is much sleeker and better looking. The BlackJack is 35% lighter — and 36% smaller overall — than the Treo 750. It has a physically smaller screen, but that screen has a third better resolution than the Treo’s. (Of course, both screens look tiny and grainy compared with the display on the new Apple phone.)

Also, the BlackJack claims 38% better battery life than the Treo, and it runs on a faster data network than the Treo. (Neither phone includes Wi-Fi.) And, to top it all off, the BlackJack is half the price — $199, compared with $399 for the Treo 750.

One of the Treo’s biggest advantages has been its Palm software, which I consider to be better designed for email and phone calls than the Windows Mobile software from Microsoft. But the new 750 model can’t claim that advantage because, while it has Palm hardware, it uses the Microsoft software.

The Treo does have a small software advantage over the BlackJack. It uses a fuller version of Windows Mobile that has more features than the stripped-down version used on the BlackJack and the Motorola Q. And, because it has a touch screen, the Treo is easier to navigate than the BlackJack, which must be controlled with buttons and a scroll wheel on the side.

Also, the Treo’s control pad felt better to me than the BlackJack’s, which was cramped. I kept hitting other buttons on the BlackJack while trying to scroll or select icons.

In my tests, both the Palm and the Samsung sent and received voice calls well. Both also exhibited the clumsiness that is inherent in Windows Mobile — multiple key presses were needed to do simple tasks. Both have basic cameras with resolutions of 1.3 megapixels. (The Apple iPhone’s camera will be two megapixels.)

The BlackJack runs on Cingular’s new broadband data network, called “3G” or HSDPA, while the Treo 750 uses a slower network called UMTS. Oddly, however, in my tests, the Treo was generally as fast or even faster at retrieving Web pages than the BlackJack.

Of these two phones, I prefer the BlackJack. But if you’re in the market for a smart phone and can afford $499, you might want to wait until June for the Apple iPhone. The Apple entry is so full of promise that anyone buying a smart phone in 2007 should at least wait for the full reviews and a chance to try it out.
