<p>The challenge, which has stumped creators since the dawn of Web video, is getting more urgent as many producers shift their attention from creating one-off viral hits to online video franchises. Media companies and advertisers say they have money to invest, but loyal audiences, while growing, remain elusive.</p>
<p>Sites including Hulu LLC, IAC/InterActiveCorp&#8217;s CollegeHumor, Blip.tv and Demand Media&#8217;s Cracked.com are trying to draw recurring viewership by enticing users to tune in at a certain day of the week, running TV-like promos for Web shows or cross-promoting series against similar content.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/files/2010/11/shufflr.png"><img src="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/files/2010/11/shufflr-275x176.png" alt="" title="shufflr" width="250" height="160" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-25931" /></a>Smart people are sure that you&#8217;re going to watch more and more Web video from the comfort of your couch.</p>
<p>But if that&#8217;s the case, how are you going to decide what to watch? The world of Internet video is exponentially bigger than the 500-channel universe you already have, and usually ignore, via your cable box. Who&#8217;s going to help you navigate that?</p>
<p>Lots of people, it turns out. In fact, that&#8217;s one of the most popular ways to attack the Web video business: Try to create what will turn out to be the Web&#8217;s version of TV Guide, and make money by selling content or advertising once you&#8217;re big enough.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s really what Boxee is up to, if it can get scale. Ditto for Clicker. And Google TV and Apple TV, really. And really, if you think about it, that&#8217;s what Hulu would like to do, if Jason Kilar could get his way. Etc.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s yet one more competitor: <a href="http://shufflr.tv/">Shufflr</a>, a newish start-up run by Bangalore-based Althea Systems. Althea has rounded up $3 million via a Series A round from Intel Capital, and is using the money to build out its product, a browser that works on laptops and, soon, phones running Google&#8217;s Android platform.*</p>
<p>Shufflr&#8217;s pitch is pretty simple: They sort through lots of video feeds&#8211;from everyone from YouTube to Comedy Central to Blip.TV&#8211;and offer up suggestions about what you&#8217;d like to see.</p>
<p>They&#8217;re based in part on what you&#8217;ve said you like on Twitter and Facebook, and in part on what your friends have said they like, by forwarding a link. And Shufflr plays the video for you&#8211;using the original distributors embedded advertising&#8211;on its own player.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s an interesting concept, but the problem with all of these machine-based recommendation engines is that they&#8217;re more clumsy than you&#8217;d like.</p>
<p>Shufflr, for instance, can figure out that I like &#8220;comedy,&#8221; but then it spits up everything that anyone has ever thought is funny. And there&#8217;s a whole lot of not-funny stuff there. At least in my humble opinion.</p>
<p>I think that&#8217;s not that much of a problem when you&#8217;re sitting on a laptop, idling for a few minutes between meetings and just want to watch&#8230;something. If you don&#8217;t like it, you flip away very, very quickly</p>
<p>But on your couch, which is the use case Shufflr is pushing here, I think your standards are higher. Or different, at least: I&#8217;m happy to flip through dud channels on my own, but if some software suggested stuff that I didn&#8217;t want to see, I&#8217;m not sure I&#8217;d stick with it very long.</p>
<p>And I&#8217;m sure that, statistically, I&#8217;m much more likely to enjoy something that one of my Facebook friends likes, or that someone I follow Twittered about. But that&#8217;s a very big group, and the truth is, I probably only care what a very small number of them say about what to watch on the Web. (I&#8217;m still angry at Clicker CEO Jim Lanzone, for instance, for raving about &#8220;Kick-Ass,&#8221; which I ended up renting on VOD. You owe me $4.99, dude.)</p>
<p>But that&#8217;s the problem that <em>most</em> recommendation sites and engines have, no matter what the topic is: You really don&#8217;t care what everyone you know says about everything&#8211;you care what a few people say about something very particular.</p>
<p>In any case, Shufflr is less than a year old, so they&#8217;ve got a bit of time to get better. But they&#8217;d best do it quickly: Plenty of other folks are trying to crack the same code.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>YouTube isn&#8217;t the only Web video company celebrating its fifth anniversary. Blip.TV doesn&#8217;t have a <a href="http://www.youtube.com/user/FiveYear">celebratory channel</a>, but it is marking the occasion in style: The New York-based company has raised $10 million in a C round led by Canaan Partners and Bain Capital.</p>
<p>Blip doesn&#8217;t make Web video&#8211;almost none of the Web video companies that survived the last bubble do that. Instead, Blip helps distribute clips, generally made by small-time producers, and sells ads against them. It splits the proceeds with the producers.</p>
<p>And like many other Web video outfits, Blip still isn&#8217;t profitable, though I&#8217;m told that could change by the end of the year. But Blip has a modest burn rate and has been steadily ramping up its list of big brand advertisers. Which is why it has been able to get away with raising only $8 million prior to its newest round.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s an interview I shot with CEO Mike Hudack yesterday, in which he explains how a Web video company can survive without the backing of Google (GOOG) or big media companies. And he sketches out his vision for Web video&#8217;s future: Lots of people spending very little to make interesting stuff, and making enough money to keep on doing it.</p>
<p>Following that, a clip of Nostalgia Critic, one of Blip&#8217;s most successful shows. I don&#8217;t get it, but plenty of people do.</p>

<p>In a new experiment, the New York Web-video network, whose shows include Rocketboom and Wallstrip, will share its videos with a new NBC channel available in New York, NY Nonstop.</p>
<p>NBC called the local-television project a way of harnessing videos as they become popular. Vickie Burns, vice president of content and audience development, cited &#8220;JK Wedding Entrance Dance,&#8221; a wedding video that drew millions of eyeballs in the past few days. “For us, Blip is playing the role of agent,” said Meredith McGinn, senior manager of special projects for NBC.</p>

<p>And a good reminder that even though Google&#8217;s (GOOG) YouTube generates more than five billion streams a month and <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090514/april-video-winners-hulu-of-course-and-mtv/">Hulu has grown 490 percent in the last year</a>, no one has really figured out a good way to turn all those eyeballs into dollars. Yet.</p>
<p>A short cheat sheet: The guys on the left side of the table are College Humor co-founders Josh Abramson and Ricky Van Veen, who sold their company to IAC (IACI) in 2006, yet remain employed by Barry Diller. <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20081219/a-taco-truck-in-the-office-and-a-dude-in-a-cage-behind-the-scenes-at-college-humors-mtv-show/?mod=ATD_search">They&#8217;re also pretty sharp business guys</a>, it turns out. The guys on the right side are <a href="http://www.jakeandamir.com/">Jake Hurwitz and Amir Blumenfeld</a>, College Humor employees who have had a long-running series of clips on the site. Dina Kaplan, who gets name-checked several times, is COO of New York-based video site <a href="http://blip.tv/">Blip.tv</a>, which happens to be the distributor of this clip.</p>

Something to think about as you ponder data from a variety of sites reporting increased traffic in January--the same month that 600,000 Americans lost their jobs.]]></description>
			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/files/2009/02/unemployed.jpg"><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-4213" title="unemployed" src="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/files/2009/02/unemployed.jpg" alt="" width="187" height="250" /></a>File under &#8220;not quite sure what to make of this&#8221;: Americans lost 600,000 jobs last month. And a wide variety of Web site operators tell me they&#8217;ve seen eye-popping traffic numbers last month. Anyone want to connect the dots?</p>
<p>First, some data points:</p>
<ul>
<li>Gawker Media&#8217;s Nick Denton reports a big traffic spike at his sites in January&#8211;298 million page views, a 30 percent year-over-year increase. That&#8217;s even though one of his biggest annual eyeball attractors&#8211;Steve Jobs at MacWorld&#8211;<a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20081216/apples-last-macworld/">never materialized</a>.</li>
<li><a href="http://blip.tv/">Blip.tv</a> CEO Mike Hudack tells me that uploads to his Web video network have increased 50 percent so far this year.</li>
<li>Now News Corp.&#8217;s (NWS) MySpace, citing comScore numbers, notes that its U.S. traffic shot up last month as well: Unique visitors were up 10 percent, which is worth noting for a (relatively) old social network, and those folks spent 30 percent more time on the site than they did a year ago. (News Corp. is the owner of Dow Jones, which owns this Web site.)</li>
<li>Obligatory Twitter traffic stat: 2.6 million uniques in January, up 1,362 percent over the last year.</li>
<li>ComScore&#8217;s (SCOR) overall numbers for Web usage for the last month: Uniques up 4.1 percent, page views up 3.1 percent, time spent per visitor up 2.5 percent.</li>
</ul>
<p>Is any of this meaningful? Hard to say: Any single site can argue that it has done something to generate more visits and engagement from its users: MySpace has its MySpace Music site, Twitter is the buzziest start-up of the last 12 months, etc.</p>
<p>And last month also happened to feature Barack Obama&#8217;s inauguration, which was a <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090128/obamas-big-day-on-the-web-smaller-than-you-thought/">huge Web traffic driver</a>.</p>
<p>Still&#8230; there aren&#8217;t that many more Americans who are getting online for the first time at this point. Isn&#8217;t it reasonable to assume that a wide variety of sites is posting big traffic gains because many of us are now unemployed or underemployed? And that we&#8217;ve got more a lot of downtime to surf and click?</p>
<p>Alas, all those eyeballs aren&#8217;t translating to dollars for many of these publishers: Just ask Time Warner&#8217;s (TWX) AOL, which saw page views increase 69 percent during the last three months of 2008, but <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090204/aols-old-news-last-quarter-was-as-bad-as-we-thought/">saw ad revenue drop 18 percent</a>.</p>
<p>But I digress. If for some reason you do find yourself with more time on your hands, might I suggest this trio of themed YouTube videos? Enjoy. And good luck.</p>

<p>Let’s get this out of the way: Yes, <a href="http://blip.tv/">Blip.tv</a> CEO Mike Hudack was one of the 20 20-somethings who appeared in &#8220;the video&#8221;&#8211;the now <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20081009/dear-web-20-you-might-want-to-stop-believin/">sort</a>-<a href="http://www.techcrunch.com/2008/10/10/team-cyprus-move-to-undo-the-video/">of</a>-<a href="http://valleywag.com/5062424/its-the-end-of-web-20-as-we-know-it">infamous</a> lip synch clip made by a bunch of vacationing Web kids.</p>
<p>And no, Hudack doesn’t feel bad about it or the brief blogstorm the clip created.</p>
<p>In any event, Hudack has real-world worries, like how to keep his video distribution site afloat.</p>
<p>The thesis behind Blip.tv, and every other video site, is simple: Lots of people are spending lots of time watching Web video and advertising will eventually follow.</p>
<p>But there are lots and lots of video sites out there (there will be fewer, soon), and advertisers have yet to really embrace Web video. Those who do buy Web video ads generally view them as experiments.</p>
<p>And experiments are hard to justify during a recession.</p>
<p>The good news, Hudack says, is that Web video only gets cheaper to produce and distribute&#8211;he says bandwidth costs have come down 40 percent in the last year. He&#8217;s now paying about a penny every time someone views one of his videos.</p>
<p>And the number of views keeps increasing: In September, Blip.tv said it had served up 51 million video views, up 250 percent year-over-year, and Mike says that number bumped up to 55 million in October.</p>
<p>And since Blip.tv only distributes clips made by pros and semi-pros, he can attach ads to most of those views, unlike YouTube, the Google (GOOG) video unit which can only monetize a small fraction of its inventory.</p>
<p>And the really good news is that Hudack has a new slug of cash to keep him afloat and allow him to expand. He won&#8217;t disclose the size of his newest round, led by Bain Capital Ventures, but I&#8217;m told it&#8217;s in the $3 million to $5 million range.</p>
<p>(Irony alert: Hudack doesn&#8217;t mind showing up on a widely distributed vacation video, but he won&#8217;t go into his company&#8217;s financials).</p>
<p>[This is normally the point in the post where I'd play you a clip of a video interview I've conducted with Hudack. But since the Amazon (AMZN) "Next Day Shipping" feature apparently just means "give us an extra $19 and we'll get it to you when we feel like it," MediaMemo is still camera-less.]</p>
<p>Instead, take a look at this episode of &#8220;Political Lunch,&#8221; a Blip.tv-distributed show and note the way that sponsor HBO has been integrated into the clip.</p>
<p>The hosts give the Time Warner (TWX) pay-cable channel a shout-out at the beginning. Then, there&#8217;s a brief overlay ad early in the piece, followed by a preview of an HBO show at the end of the clip.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s a good example of what Web video can offer an advertiser&#8211;a chance to get right in front of viewers, when they&#8217;re already engaged in the screen, without being too obtrusive.</p>
<p>Now the trick for Blip.tv, and everyone else in Web video, is convincing a lot more advertisers that this is worth their while.</p>

<p>But the video gave me flashbacks to heedless-partying-until-the-bomb-fell attitude before the popping of the Web 1.0 bubble. It obviously still burns.</p>
<p>The group rollicking includes Blip.tv&#8217;s Mike Hudack, Facebook&#8217;s Dave Morin, Drop.io&#8217;s Sam Lessin and&#8211;<em>well, um, eek, bad idea, awkward!</em>&#8211;tech reporter Jessica Vascellaro of The Wall Street Journal.</p>
