<p>Here&#8217;s a new trailer for HBO&#8217;s upcoming series &#8220;The Newsroom,&#8221; by famed Hollywood screenwriter Aaron Sorkin.</p>
<p>The series &#8212; by the man behind the hit television show &#8220;The West Wing&#8221; and the Facebook movie &#8220;The Social Network&#8221; &#8212; is set at a cable news channel under siege in the new-media age.</p>
<p>In other words, lots of hand-wringing over blogs and tweeting, along with the drama.</p>
<p>It looks tasty, and Walt Mossberg and I will be asking Sorkin about it at the 10th <strong>D: All Things Digital</strong> conference at the end of this month, where <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120423/you-can-handle-the-truth-aaron-sorkin-to-appear-onstage-at-d10/">he will be appearing as a speaker</a>.</p>

<p>On the heels of our recent hiring of <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120416/welcome-to-atd-the-very-social-mike-isaac/">Mike Isaac</a> to cover social tech for this site, Bonnie Cha will be joining the staff of <strong>All Things Digital</strong> as a senior reviewer.</p>
<p>She joins Walt Mossberg and Katie Boehret, as well as recent hire Lauren Goode, as part of our <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120311/were-expanding-all-things-digital-would-like-you-to-meet-all-things-reviewed/">expanded <strong>All Things Reviewed</strong> site</a>.</p>
<p>Cha has been covering technology since 2002, most recently spending eight years at CNET reviewing various consumer electronics, including printers, software and smartphones, as well as reporting on the wireless industry. </p>
<p>She also wrote for the Crave blog there, covering such topics as robotics and science, and served as a technical editor on several how-to books for McGraw-Hill.</p>
<p>When not tinkering with the latest gadgets, Cha enjoys spending her free time surfing or checking out live music. She is a graduate of Emory University with a degree in English and of the University of Southern California, where she got her masters in journalism. </p>
<p>Most of all, we think she&#8217;s a perfect fit for our ever-growing staff, so get ready for some insightful reviews and more when she starts in May.</p>

<p>Facebook has just announced that it will acquire Instagram, the popular mobile photo-sharing service, for $1 billion in cash and shares.</p>
<p>The social networking giant posted on the acquisition, its biggest yet, on its site, as well as on CEO and co-founder <a href="https://www.facebook.com/zuck">Mark Zuckerberg&#8217;s Timeline</a> on Facebook.</p>
<p>Photos are critically important for Facebook, which has been <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120409/facetagram-instabook-whatever-you-call-it-all-your-photo-are-belong-to-facebook-for-1-billion/">slow to innovate in the fast-growing mobile arena</a> in the important consumer space. By contrast, Instagram has taken the arena by storm, with its delightful and elegant app and the motto, &#8220;Fast beautiful photo sharing.&#8221;</p>
<p>Consumers have responded (including me &#8212; it is the only non-communications app I use many times a day). The San Francisco-based company &#8212; with only 13 employees &#8212; had <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120403/instagram-by-the-numbers-1-billion-photos-uploaded/">30 million Apple iPhone users</a> before it came to Google&#8217;s Android last week, where it got <a href="http://instagram-engineering.tumblr.com/post/20541814340/keeping-instagram-up-with-over-a-million-new-users-in">more than a million new users in just 12 hours</a>.</p>
<p>Still, despite all the usage, Instagram had not articulated a plan for, you know, making money. Now, that will presumably be Facebook&#8217;s problem to solve.</p>
<p>The Facebook acquisition has been kept very quiet, with its CEO Kevin Systrom working on it in conjunction with <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120406/sequoia-set-to-lead-500m-valuation-round-for-instagram/">new fundraising efforts</a> that would have valued the company at $500 million. Liz Gannes reported on this effort last week, which was poised to close, in fact, before the Facebook deal was struck over the weekend.</p>
<p>Until now, Instagram has <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110202/instagram-raises-7m-led-by-benchmark/">received</a> Series A funding of $7 million led by Benchmark Capital just over a year ago, when it only had 1.75 million registered users.</p>
<p>Seed investors include Andreessen Horowitz &#8212; <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20101110/no-its-not-instagram-photo-sharing-app-picplz-raises-5-million/">which did not follow on later</a> &#8212; and Baseline Ventures. Also in the Benchmark round: Twitter creator Jack Dorsey, former Facebooker Adam D&#8217;Angelo and Chris Sacca.</p>
<p>In a <a href="http://blog.instagram.com/">blog post</a> titled &#8220;Instagram + Facebook,&#8221; Systrom promised no change, except for the $1 billion mountain of cash:</p>
<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s important to be clear that Instagram is not going away. We&#8217;ll be working with Facebook to evolve Instagram and build the network &#8230; The Instagram app will still be the same one you know and love.&#8221;</p>
<p>Zuckerberg also promised that Facebook would keep Instagram independent, and that such a large purchase would be rare for the company, which is set to go public soon.</p>
<p>&#8220;This is an important milestone for Facebook because it&#8217;s the first time we&#8217;ve ever acquired a product and company with so many users,&#8221; he wrote. &#8220;We don&#8217;t plan on doing many more of these, if any at all.&#8221;</p>

<p>The total consideration for San Francisco-based Instagram is approximately $1 billion in a combination of cash and shares of Facebook. The transaction, which is subject to customary closing conditions, is expected to close later this quarter.</p>

<p>I&#8217;m excited to share the news that we&#8217;ve agreed to acquire Instagram and that their talented team will be joining Facebook.</p>
<p>For years, we&#8217;ve focused on building the best experience for sharing photos with your friends and family. Now, we&#8217;ll be able to work even more closely with the Instagram team to also offer the best experiences for sharing beautiful mobile photos with people based on your interests.</p>
<p>We believe these are different experiences that complement each other. But in order to do this well, we need to be mindful about keeping and building on Instagram&#8217;s strengths and features rather than just trying to integrate everything into Facebook.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s why we&#8217;re committed to building and growing Instagram independently. Millions of people around the world love the Instagram app and the brand associated with it, and our goal is to help spread this app and brand to even more people.</p>
<p>We think the fact that Instagram is connected to other services beyond Facebook is an important part of the experience. We plan on keeping features like the ability to post to other social networks, the ability to not share your Instagrams on Facebook if you want, and the ability to have followers and follow people separately from your friends on Facebook.</p>
<p>These and many other features are important parts of the Instagram experience and we understand that. We will try to learn from Instagram&#8217;s experience to build similar features into our other products. At the same time, we will try to help Instagram continue to grow by using Facebook&#8217;s strong engineering team and infrastructure.</p>

<p>In another high-profile parry in its increasingly aggressive proxy fight against Yahoo, activist shareholder Third Point has launched an extensive Web blog to support its case with investors called <a href="http://valueyahoo.com">&#8220;Value Yahoo.&#8221;</a></p>
<p>Along with a long statement &#8212; a <em>blogifesto</em> of sorts &#8212; about what it will take to fix the Silicon Valley Internet giant, Value Yahoo also tries to keep up the pressure on Yahoo&#8217;s board and management.</p>
<p>The purple-themed site &#8212; this is Yahoo&#8217;s well-known color &#8212; features a humorous take on Yahoo&#8217;s now dearly departed neon sign in San Francisco, with the banner: &#8220;Yahoo Shareholders Deserve Overdue Representation!&#8221;</p>
<p>It includes a section on &#8220;Failed Leadership,&#8221; info on its &#8220;Road to Recovery&#8221; slate of alternate directors and even an FAQ and mission statement.</p>
<p>&#8220;We believe in Yahoo!, its loyal users, committed employees, dedicated partners, and the potential of the brand,&#8221; <a href="http://valueyahoo.com/resources/pov/our-mission-statement">it reads, in part</a>. &#8220;Yahoo! shareholders, employees, and partners have suffered for too long with a revolving door of management teams and Directors who have been unable to seize opportunities despite the Company&#8217;s enduring role as the premier online source for news, sports, business, entertainment and email.&#8221;</p>
<p>By the way, in a clever dig, there is also a <a href="http://www.facebook.com/ValueYahoo?ref=ts&#038;__adt=11">Facebook site</a> for Value Yahoo &#8212; patent lawsuit or no, you can &#8220;like&#8221; Third Point&#8217;s effort.</p>
<p>Here, for example, is one of Value Yahoo&#8217;s charticles:</p>

<p>The goal of all this, presumably, is to get Yahoo to give in to demands for several board seats using its directors, including Third Point&#8217;s Dan Loeb. So far, ongoing discussions between Loeb and Yahoo have failed to stop the shareholder battle, which comes in the midst of the company&#8217;s <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120330/yahoo-layoffs-set-to-begin-next-week-followed-by-restructuring-the-week-after/">wrenching restructuring</a>. </p>
<p>Last week, Yahoo said it had<a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120325/yahoo-appoints-three-new-directors-in-a-smack-to-activist-shareholder-like-i-said/"> appointed three new directors</a> to its board. In a pointed slap at Loeb, the company said it had rejected him specifically, although Yahoo added that it was willing to accept one of his current choices and another that was mutually agreed to.</p>
<p>Loeb reacted to that, um, badly, with another letter last week that said Yahoo leadership was living in an <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120328/third-points-loeb-to-yahoo-about-board-rejection-illogical-alice-in-wonderland-world/">&#8220;illogical Alice-in-Wonderland world.&#8221;</a></p>
<p>The war of words continues with the new site, which Third Point said it will maintain actively like a blog, with updates, charts, filings, outside news stories and more.</p>
<p>(Since Yahoo has apparently banned me from its internal news offering to employees, according to more sources than you can shake a stick at, I hope they can see my work here!) </p>
<p>In its newest post &#8212; titled <a href="http://valueyahoo.com/resources/pov/why-are-we-running-for-election-to-the-yahoo-board">&#8220;Why Are We Running for Election to the Yahoo! <p>(In fact, that&#8217;s an FAQ question on Value Yahoo, <em>natch</em>: &#8220;Yahoo! has made changes to its Board. Hasn&#8217;t Third Point already gotten what it wanted?&#8221; Short answer: Vigilance, since they are well-known backsliders over there!)</p>
<p>As the firm notes in its reasons-why essay, with the original bolding on the Value Yahoo blog:</p>
<p>&#8220;After years of failed leadership and poor governance, Yahoo! shareholders have a chance to inject experienced, independent voices aligned with their interests. <p>The folks over at Encyclopaedia Britannica posted today to say they are discontinuing the 32-volume printed book edition of the invaluable information resource &#8220;when our current inventory is gone.&#8221;</p>
<p>It&#8217;s an obvious and inevitable move &#8212; although I deeply loved my giant set of tomes back in the day. But my favorite part of the transition is how the organization handled it with class and forwardness, with a blog post titled: &#8220;Change: It&#8217;s Okay. Really.&#8221;</p>
<p>Really it is, in this case at least. </p>
<p>In a simple but elegant set of words, <a href="http://www.britannica.com/blogs/2012/03/change/">they wrote</a> about its history:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>For 244 years, the thick volumes of the Encyclopaedia Britannica have stood on the shelves of homes, libraries, and businesses everywhere, a source of enlightenment as well as comfort to their owners and users around the world.</p>
<p>They&#8217;ve always been there. Year after year. Since 1768. Every. Single. Day.</p>
<p>But not forever.</p></blockquote>

<p>In an effort to minimize the impact of <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120305/yahoos-new-ceo-preps-major-restructuring-including-significant-layoffs/">massive layoffs</a> that Yahoo&#8217;s top management has been planning, according to sources close to the situation, one of the latest ideas to save costs and presumably jobs by new CEO Scott Thompson is to sell off much of its advertising technology platform, including Right Media.</p>
<p>And among the possible buyers Thompson has been targeting in recent visits: Google and Microsoft, as well as Silver Lake, the private equity firm that had once been talking to the Silicon Valley Internet giant about making a large investment in the company.</p>
<p>(That <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120126/yahoo-ceo-meets-with-pe-firms-pipe-might-be-dead-but-what-else-is-there/">particular deal</a> has gone south, but there is always yet another scheme on the horizon at Yahoo!)</p>
<p>The concept behind such a sale, according to several sources inside and outside the company, is to turn a cost center into a revenue source, with Yahoo essentially outsourcing a business that was a cornerstone of its strategy. A negotiable number of employees affiliated with those units would then move over to the new owner.</p>
<p>The most ideal plan, said sources, would be to sell Yahoo&#8217;s whole advertising technology &#8220;stack,&#8221; including the Right Media Exchange, a marketplace for advertisers, publishers and ad networks to trade online ads. Yahoo bought it for $700 million in 2007. </p>
<p>According to info on the company&#8217;s site, it has &#8220;300,000 active global buyers and sellers and more than 11 billion daily transactions.&#8221;</p>
<p><a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120314/to-stanch-layoffs-yahoo-has-been-shopping-its-ad-technology-platforms-to-google-microsoft-and-others/yahoo-apt-logo1/" rel="attachment wp-att-186088"><img src="http://allthingsd.com/files/2012/03/yahoo-apt-logo1.jpg" alt="" title="yahoo-apt-logo1" width="300" height="151" class="alignleft size-full wp-image-186088" /></a></p>
<p>Also part of the possible package is APT, a system Yahoo has built to make buying and selling online advertising easier. In addition, Yahoo&#8217;s technologies for display-ad serving have been mentioned as a possibility for sale.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s unclear what the potential sale means for the new ad strategy that U.S. boss Ross Levinsohn and his lieutenant Jim Heckman have been pursuing since last summer. That plan included its own <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111101/yahoo-buys-ad-network-interclick-for-270-million/">acquisition of ad network Interclick</a> and an attempt to sync up with rivals AOL and Microsoft in an effort to fend off Google and some third-party players, like ad networks.</p>
<p>But the reason for contemplating much a major move &#8212; which has been considered before, but never has been seriously offered &#8212; are obvious: While Yahoo once dominated this arena, it has steadily lost ground, especially to Google. The search giant has made almost all of its money in search-related ads, but has been moving aggressively via its DoubleClick and other ad-serving entities into higher-level ads.</p>
<p>Microsoft has also been trying to compete, as has AOL, but it&#8217;s getting to be an expensive race, and one where Yahoo would have to make major investments to once again gain momentum. Building up this business again had been the aim of co-founder Jerry Yang, who wanted to go big in the arena in a number of ways before he left the company earlier this year.</p>
<p>But those days seem to be over at Yahoo.</p>
<p>&#8220;A lot of what has happened so far under Scott [Thompson] has been trying to find more revenue anywhere it can be generated, and get out of businesses that are not growing,&#8221; said one person. &#8220;Right now, it&#8217;s a lot about what we shouldn&#8217;t do rather than what we should.&#8221;</p>
<p>That has meant visits to see both Google and Microsoft about possible deals by Thompson, with the involvement of CFO Tim Morse and Chief Product Officer Blake Irving. </p>

<p>Thompson (pictured here) has also recently been talking to Silver Lake about the ad-platform sale, in a deal that might include the Andreessen Horowitz venture fund. This would be a different kind of transaction, said sources, in which a separate company would be formed, with Yahoo owning a piece and contracting with the new entity to provide ad technology.</p>
<p>All this activity is related to the layoffs in the works of perhaps thousands of employees, which were to have been communicated to the company this week. </p>
<p>Sources said those have been delayed for some weeks for several reasons, including whether to consider more deeply if certain larger business units can be spun off, sold or somehow transformed. (To be clear: Major layoffs are still being planned, but now might take place in two parts, said sources, in what is a quickly changing and volatile atmosphere at Yahoo.)</p>
<p>Another area being looked at, said sources, is Yahoo&#8217;s search advertising partnership with Microsoft, which has not been as successful as had been expected. While Yahoo has been working with the software giant about improving the results, Thompson has apparently been contemplating other possibilities, including working with Google (calling all regulators!) and/or laying off up to 900 employees who work on the company&#8217;s search offering.</p>
<p>Any of these moves could, of course, cause a firestorm of controversy, which Thompson appears to not worry much about. He was the driving force in Yahoo&#8217;s <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120312/breaking-yahoo-sues-facebook-for-patent-infringement/">patent lawsuit against Facebook</a> earlier this week, which is largely attracting a negative reaction across the tech landscape. </p>
<p>A number of prominent voices have spoken out against the legal action, including well-known VC Fred Wilson, who yesterday penned a poisonous blog post, titled &#8220;<a href="http://www.avc.com/a_vc/2012/03/yahoo-crosses-the-line.html">Yahoo Crosses the Line</a>.&#8221; </p>
<p>It ends thusly: &#8220;I am not writing this in defense of Facebook. They can and will defend themselves. I am writing this in outrage at Yahoo! I used to care about that company for some reason. No more. They are dead to me. Dead and gone. I hate them now.&#8221;</p>

<p><em>Double ouch!</em></p>
<p>All I can say is that Thompson certainly has a lot of gumption. That has actually been his M.O. from the start, said several sources, with the former president of eBay&#8217;s PayPal payments unit and dark horse cold-emailing his way into the Yahoo CEO job. </p>
<p>True story: He had not been among its list of possible candidates &#8212; largely because he had been placed in his job at eBay many moons ago by Heidrick &#038; Struggles, which was conducting the Yahoo CEO search, and that&#8217;s a talent acquisition no-no to poach someone you placed. </p>
<p>That did not stop Thompson, who thought he might be good for the job and reached out directly to board members at the end of the selection effort, which then led to the search committee and soon enough to the job in what was a very quick vetting and secretive (although <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120103/exclusive-yahoo-poised-to-name-ceo-with-ebays-paypal-head-as-top-choice/">not secretive <em>enough</em></a>!) hiring process. </p>
<p>Since then, Thompson has been on a tear, from working on a restructuring to trying to assuage activist shareholder Dan Loeb to helping put the kibosh on its Asian stake sale talks to suing Facebook. And now this sale effort, too. </p>
<p>If the peripatetic Thompson &#8212; who might need a dose of Ritalin before this thing is over &#8212; wanted to get noticed by the tech powers that be: Mission accomplished!</p>
<p>&#8220;He&#8217;s definitely someone who appears to have decided on shooting the moon with a lot of these actions,&#8221; said one person close to the situation, referring to the move in the card game of Hearts, which is a risky gambit to capture every penalty card worth 26 points in order to win. &#8220;I just hope no one loses an eye in the process.&#8221;</p>
<p>(That would be triple ouch, by the way.)</p>

<p>GigaOM finally fessed up and said that it had bought tech and media news site paidContent, as <strong>AllThingsD.com</strong> media ninja Peter Kafka had <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120206/is-gigaom-buying-paidcontent/">reported earlier this week</a> it would.</p>
<p>The price is reportedly low, according to sources, but we&#8217;ll find out for you, since neither GigaOM nor the former paidContent owner, Britain&#8217;s Guardian News &#038; Media, is talking. As part of the deal, though, the Guardian has gotten some sort of stake in GigaOM, and someone there is joining its board as an observer.</p>
<p>PaidContent founder Rafat Ali left his company a couple years after selling to the Guardian in 2008. The Guardian put it up for sale in the fall.</p>
<p>Malik has sold off chunks of his own business &#8212; one of the pioneering tech and media news blogs &#8212; to venture capitalists such as True Ventures (where he is now a venture partner) and Reed Elsevier Ventures, who have invested a total of $15 million.</p>
<p>In a blast from the past, here is a <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20070624/kara-visits-contentnexts-rafat-ali/">video interview I did with Ali in mid-2007</a> in Santa Monica, Calif., at what was then its new offices, talking about the bright future ahead for paidContent (sorry about the quality, but whatevs!):</p>

<blockquote class="memo"><p>First the news: Yes, the rumors are true. We are indeed buying the assets of ContentNext Media from Guardian News &#038; Media Limited. And no, we are not disclosing the terms of the deal, except that we are buying the entire group of properties &#8212; paidContent.org, mocoNews.net, contentSutra and paidContent:UK and that a representative of Guardian News &#038; Media will join our board of directors as an observer.</p>
<p>A few weeks ago when Paul Walborsky, CEO of GigaOM, came to the board and suggested that we should try and acquire paidContent, my fellow board members &#8212; Jon Callaghan (True Ventures), Ammar Hanafi (Alloy Ventures) and Kevin Brown (Reed Elsevier Ventures) &#8212; didn&#8217;t hesitate for a minute. The ethos of paidContent and our company are in sync. GigaOM&#8217;s core belief is that as connectivity becomes ubiquitous, it changes everything from society to business to we the people. paidContent from the very beginning has been built on the idea that connectedness is and will change media. It makes perfect sense for us to team up. Since then, Paul and his team worked tirelessly to make it happen.</p>
<p><strong>OK, now you know what. Let me tell you why.</strong></p>
<p>Now, why are we doing this deal, clearly the biggest of our five-and-a-half-year history? Two simple but equally powerful reasons &#8212; the first and perhaps most important reason: people. I have been an admirer of paidContent&#8217;s editorial team from the very beginning of its journey. Rafat Ali and Staci Kramer were two of my favorite writers in the early days of professional blogging. And while Rafat (who is on our board of advisers) has moved on to new things, I am glad to have Staci join us. She has been instrumental in building ContentNext from the ground up, and in addition to writing, she has been building the company&#8217;s event business. I am thrilled to announce that she will remain the editor of paidContent.</p>
<p>Ernie Sander who spearheads the ContentNext editorial operations is the kind of veteran everyone on our team, including me, can learn from. And for that precise reason, Ernie is going to become the executive editor of our sprawling online editorial operations. Our managing editor, Nicole Solis, is being promoted to VP of Editorial Operations. And then there is the most awesome team of journalists &#8212; Robert Andrews, Tom Krazit, Daniel Frankel, Laura Hazard Owen, Jeff Roberts and Amanda Natividad. In addition there are a wonderful group of technology, business and sales people who are joining our company. I welcome them all to our growing family and can&#8217;t wait to break bread with them in weeks to come.</p>
<p><strong>Location, location, location</strong></p>
<p>These fine folks are actually going to help bolster our presence in New York and help increase our footprint in Europe, a region of key strategic focus for GigaOM. (We will be hosting Structure:Europe in Amsterdam, October 16-17.) With this deal, we are really pleased that one of the most forward-looking media outlets around, Guardian News &#038; Media, will become a shareholder in our business.</p>
<p>As you all know, I am (and will always be) a displaced New Yorker; New York City is my spiritual home. By increasing our footprint in the capital of the world, I would get a chance to go back more often. But it&#8217;s not an emotional tug that is driving us to this decision. New York is fast becoming a major technology hub, as Ryan Kim outlined in his recent post. And we want to expand our coverage to Boston &#8212; thanks to Barb Darrow who joined us several months ago &#8212; and the Washington DC corridor as well. paidContent&#8217;s New York City offices are now GigaOM East.</p>
<p><strong>Media is the new Wild West</strong></p>
<p>We are quite strategic about our acquisitions &#8212; we acquire media entities only if we love the people and believe that we are at the starting phase of a trend. In 2008, we acquired jkOnTheRun as our tip of the hat to the growing demand for mobile devices and the changes it would bring into society. Later that year, we brought in The Apple Blog because we knew the best was yet to come for Apple. Both of those acquisitions have helped GigaOM cover the issues that matter most to our ultimate customers &#8212; you, the reader &#8212; in a smart, sensible fashion.</p>
<p>&#8220;The question that mass amateurization poses to traditional media is &#8216;What happens when the costs of reproduction and distribution go away? What happens when there is nothing unique about publishing anymore because users can do it for themselves?&#8221; We are now starting to see that question being answered.&#8221; &#8212; Clay Shirky</p>
<p>Shirky&#8217;s observation means that we are in a time of chaos where the very idea of media is being questioned. And as a Chinese proverb says, from chaos emerges opportunity. I believe the best is yet to come for media.</p>
<p>Over the past few years we have started to see the transformation of media by new technologies, new methods of distribution and newer ways to consume information. Mathew Ingram has been writing about these disruptions on a regular basis, and now we are going to double down on what we think is a great new chapter in the media industry.</p>
<p>I have always believed that we&#8217;ve got to stop thinking of media as what it was and focus on more of what it could be. In the world of plenty, the only currency is attention and attention is what defines &#8220;media.&#8221; Zynga is fighting Hollywood for attention (and winning). Instagram is taking moments away from other media. They have attention. There are old companies that are dying and new ones that are being invented. We&#8217;re eager to expand our coverage of social and digital media editorially, in our research and at our events. paidContent is the best chronicler of the media industry, and by blending their coverage with ours, we hope to watch this fast-changing industry ever more closely.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><a href="http://www.tumblr.com/">Tumblr</a> was an accidental social network, said founder and CEO David Karp, speaking at the <a href="http://www.dld-conference.com/">DLD conference</a> in Munich today.</p>
<p>In its early days, the service didn&#8217;t have the &#8220;steep social network growth&#8221; you might expect, because it was about a core community of creators, Karp said. The company originally set out to build novel tools that offered an escape from the restrictive templates of Facebook and Twitter.</p>
<p>When the site really took off was when the curators &#8212; people who primarily respond to other Tumblr users&#8217; content by &#8220;reblogging&#8221; it on their own pages &#8212; came on board.</p>
<p><a href="http://allthingsd.com/files/2012/01/DavidKarpDLD.png"><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-166254" title="DavidKarpDLD" src="http://allthingsd.com/files/2012/01/DavidKarpDLD-380x253.png" alt="" width="380" height="253" /></a>Today, creators are probably 10 percent of Tumblr, and curators are 90 percent, Karp estimated.</p>
<p>And further, the average post on Tumblr is reblogged nine times, he said.</p>
<p>That can mean a single post gets the amplification of nine separate blogs, nine RSS feeds, nine blogs&#8217; page views and followers, and nine bloggers&#8217; syndication on Facebook and Twitter. &#8220;So your content has a huge footprint,&#8221; Karp said.</p>
<p>What&#8217;s next for Tumblr, which just <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20101119/tumblr-falls-into-a-really-big-pile-of-money/">raised a bunch of money</a> and <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111205/longtime-google-policy-guy-andrew-mclaughlin-headed-to-tumblr/">brought in some senior management</a>? Well, monetization, for one thing. Karp said Tumblr is pursuing &#8220;novel approaches to revenue,&#8221; including selling blog themes.</p>
<p>At 15 billion page views per month across more than <a href="http://www.tumblr.com/about">41 million blogs</a>, &#8220;with that many page views we could throw AdSense up there tomorrow and be profitable,&#8221; Karp said. But that&#8217;s not what he wants to do.</p>
<p>Karp said Tumblr is also working to &#8220;try and filter our network in ways that are more appealing to a global market.&#8221;</p>
<p>He added that Tumblr takes pride in being a New York-based company, and in hiring people with experience building things on the Web, rather than degrees from schools like Stanford. Half of Tumblr&#8217;s recent hires have relocated to New York to work for the company, most of them from the West Coast, Karp said.</p>

<p>Here&#8217;s the fifth in a series of videos blogs, or vlogs, being done by director Peter Jackson on his making of &#8220;The Hobbit&#8221; movie.</p>
<p>I really like how he&#8217;s doing this online, especially given the interest from the huge fan base for the fantasy novel by J. R. R. Tolkien.</p>
<p>The prequel to &#8220;The Lord of the Rings&#8221; film trilogy, which Jackson also directed, &#8220;The Hobbit&#8221; is being filmed in New Zealand &#8212; standing in for Middle-earth &#8212; and will be released in two parts, in December 2012 and December 2013.</p>

		<description><![CDATA[Still suffering withdrawal from an annual holiday-season Hobbit habit? Hope is but a year away.]]></description>

During the prior three years, I had become accustomed to standing in line to see a &#8220;Lord of the Rings&#8221; movie. But there were only three of them and, well, once the trilogy was done, it was done. Ever since, I&#8217;ve kind of moped a bit without a cinematic trip to Middle Earth to look forward to.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ve seen two performances of <a href="http://www.lordoftheringsinconcert.com/">The Lord of the Rings in Concert</a>, which is great fun and has been at New York&#8217;s Radio City Music Hall in previous autumns. But not this year.</p>
<p>But next year &#8212; and the year after that &#8212; I can renew my Hobbit habit. Yesterday the trailer for the first of two films based on &#8220;The Hobbit&#8221; hit the Internet. This one will be called &#8220;The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey&#8221; and will be in 3-D. It will cover roughly the first half of the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J._R._R._Tolkien">J.R.R. Tolkien</a> novel that predates the &#8220;Lord&#8221; trilogy, and includes the finding of the ring that&#8217;s central to the later story. Also there&#8217;s one surprise: The trailer sure makes it look like Gandalf and Galadriel are, or once were, an item. I sure don&#8217;t remember <em>that</em> from the books.</p>
<p>We here at <strong>AllThingsD</strong> have been paying close attention to the progress of these films, hanging on every video-blog posting by famed director Peter Jackson. (And if you haven&#8217;t seen them, they&#8217;re very fun to watch: <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110421/viral-video-the-hobbit-blog/">Part 1</a>; <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110715/viral-video-inside-the-the-hobbit-part-2/">Part 2</a>; <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111109/viral-video-more-hobbit-from-the-vlog-files-of-peter-jackson/">Part 3</a>.) I don&#8217;t think I&#8217;m the only member of the team that has a Hobbit habit. But I&#8217;m probably the only one who will admit it.</p>

<p>As I <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111208/googles-news-reader-now-called-currents-finally-coming/">reported this morning</a> it was close to launching, Google has debuted its news reader product, which is called <a href="http://www.google.com/producer/editions">Google Currents</a>. In a <a href="http://googlemobile.blogspot.com/2011/12/google-currents-is-hot-off-press.html">blog post</a>, the search giant said that the new product, which will compete with many others, including as Flipboard, Yahoo&#8217;s Livestand and AOL&#8217;s Editions, will be available on Google&#8217;s own Android mobile operating system devices, as well as Apple&#8217;s iPhone and iPad.</p>
<p>Google Currents will debut with 150 partners &#8212; including <strong>AllThingsD.com</strong> (my developers can sure keep a secret).</p>

<p>Two of the more interesting online media properties are apparently joining up for a <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/news/tedtalks2011">year-end online idea festival</a>.</p>
<p>The AOL-owned Huffington Post, and TED, the massive conference organization and online site dedicated to its offerings, will jointly feature 18 of the best onstage speeches from TED&#8217;s excellent year-round global events.</p>
<p>The idea-thon will be called &#8220;Best of TED 2011: A Countdown of 18 Groundbreaking Ideas to Reshape the World in 2012.&#8221; A post on the Huffington Post site noted that it will feature the popular TEDTalks and combine them with &#8220;new blog posts written by the people who delivered them, examining how their ideas were impacted by being shared with a global audience.&#8221;</p>
<p>Out of a total of 300 possible choices, the number of speeches has been narrowed down to 18, because TEDTalks are limited to no more than 18 minutes. The talks range over a wide array of topic areas, including science, art, music, tech and more. </p>
<p>In an interview today, HuffPost majordomo Arianna Huffington said that the aim was to spur thinking around big problems the world faces.</p>
<p>&#8220;We are trying to be people to rethink everything in a super engaging way,&#8221; she said. &#8220;That is what TED is famous for and we wanted to shed a lot of light on it.&#8221;</p>

<p>We are thrilled to welcome another strong reporter to the <strong>AllThingsD</strong> team: Lauren Goode, who will cover consumer tech products and issues. She&#8217;ll be based in New York.</p>
<p>Lauren comes to us from the digital arm of our sister news organization, The Wall Street Journal, where she was a video producer and reporter, from 2008 to 2011. She helped launch the Journal&#8217;s live-streaming video programming and produced and co-hosted the daily &#8220;Digits&#8221; technology show, which regularly features our <strong>ATD</strong> staff along with Journal reporters and editors. (We hope to see her there from time to time as a guest herself now.) She was also a contributing writer to the Digits blog on WSJ.com, and wrote posts on consumer technology products.</p>
<p>Prior to joining the Journal, Lauren worked in cable television from 2003 to 2008, producing and writing shows for A&#038;E Television Networks&#8217; award-winning &#8220;Biography&#8221; series, after having started her career as a production assistant at ESPN in New York.</p>
<p>The addition of Lauren to <strong>AllThingsD</strong> is just the latest move in an expansion that has seen our staff more than double in the past year, including adding new reporters, editors and developers. This has allowed us to broaden and deepen our coverage, to break more news and also to begin doing different types of stories than many other blogs offer, such as our recent series on Facebook&#8217;s smartphone effort.</p>

		<description><![CDATA[Organic arugula alert: Disney's interactive unit is calling all urban hipster parents!]]></description>

<p>Disney, which has been busy reorganizing its interactive group, is buying <a href="http://www.babble.com">Babble Media</a>, a New York-based parenting platform that features several hundred mom bloggers.</p>
<p>The entertainment giant declined to provide the purchase price for the New York-based start-up, which was founded by aiming at urban hipster parents and has garnered more than $6 million in funding since it was spun off from Nerve Media several years ago.</p>
<p>Babble&#8217;s venture investors include Greycroft Partners, Village Ventures and iNovia Capital.</p>
<p>Co-founders Rufus Griscom and Alisa Volkman and the rest of the 40-person Babble staff will join the Disney Interactive Media Group unit as part of its Moms and Family portfolio, Disney said in its official press release (see below).</p>
<p>Disney described Babble as the &#8220;premier blogging platform for a new generation of connected parents.&#8221; To me, that roughly translates into Brooklyn-living, Bugaboo-pushing, organic arugula-eating, yoga-calm moms and sensitive New Age dads. </p>
<p>But don&#8217;t take my word for it &#8212; today&#8217;s front page features on Babble include &#8220;15 Vegan Recipes for Thanksgiving&#8221; and &#8220;Is It Selfish to Have One Child?&#8221; (Yum and <em>kinda</em>!)</p>
<p>The next obvious stop for its audience, after the kids get a little bigger: Gwyneth Paltrow&#8217;s fabulously twee and irksomely addictive <a href="http://www.GOOP.com/">GOOP</a>.</p>
<p>But Brooke Chaffin, who is SVP of Moms and Family in the Disney Interactive Media Group, said in an interview that the highly interactive content site with a definite &#8220;sophisticated&#8221; editorial voice has become mainstream, and is actually where the whole category is going.</p>
<p>&#8220;Babble is sharing the experience and stories on a daily basis through the parents lens,&#8221; she said. &#8220;And it brings in a blog network that is so important to this audience, because it&#8217;s by, for and about parents, and that&#8217;s far more important for them than experts.&#8221;</p>
<p>There will be that, too, said Chaffin, who noted the site has grown 100 percent year over year. It is now up to four million unique monthly visitors.</p>
<p>Disney plans to add its more evergreen family-focused content to Babble, to give it more heft to compete with other similar parenting sites, such as Johnson &#038; Johnson-owned BabyCenter, NBC&#8217;s iVillage, Parents.com and CafeMom.</p>
<p>Interestingly, Disney had taken a gander at <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20100817/exclusive-yahoo-eyes-cafemom-for-100-million-acquisition/">buying CafeMom</a> a while back.</p>
<p>Chaffin, who <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110105/disney-interactive-hires-brooke-chaffin-to-oversee-content-for-women-and-families/">came to Disney earlier this year</a> after a stint at Auditude and a long time at Yahoo, said Babble has carved out a unique niche in combining content with social &#8212; the current gold ring for a lot of publishers. </p>
<p>&#8220;What Babble is doing is best of breed &#8230; it is just a different approach to blogging,&#8221; she said. &#8220;It felt like we at Disney are about storytelling and Babble does an amazing job doing just that.&#8221;</p>

<p>In a <a href="http://blogs.adobe.com/conversations/2011/11/flash-focus.html">blog post by one of its execs</a>, titled &#8220;Flash to Focus on PC Browsing and Mobile Apps; Adobe to More Aggressively Contribute to HTML5,&#8221; Adobe said what had already been reported: That it would no longer be developing its well-known Flash for mobile devices.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s the key graph:</p>
<p>&#8220;Our future work with Flash on mobile devices will be focused on enabling Flash developers to package native apps with Adobe AIR for all the major app stores. We will no longer continue to develop Flash Player in the browser to work with new mobile device configurations (chipset, browser, OS version, etc.) following the upcoming release of Flash Player 11.1 for Android and BlackBerry PlayBook. We will of course continue to provide critical bug fixes and security updates for existing device configurations. We will also allow our source code licensees to continue working on and release their own implementations.&#8221;</p>
<p>Last night, <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111108/gone-in-a-flash-adobe-said-halting-development-on-mobile-version-of-its-plug-in/">reports surfaced</a> that the high-profile software company &#8212; whose Flash technology has been a flagship product &#8212; was halting development on the mobile version of its browser plug-in.</p>
<p>Now, Adobe will focus its PC Web browser business on tools that allow Flash developers to create mobile apps by packaging their code to run on Adobe&#8217;s AIR platform.</p>
<p>The move has big implications for Adobe going forward and also for mobile device makers, such as Google and Research In Motion. But <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111109/horse-flash-apples-steve-jobs-on-adobe-vendetta-in-2010-at-d8-video/">not Apple</a>.</p>
<p>As Ina Fried wrote: </p>
<p>&#8220;The move, if true, would be a major blow to Android device makers, who have long touted Flash compatibility as a key competitive advantage over Apple&#8217;s iPhone and iPad.</p>
<p>It would also mark a posthumous vindication for former Apple CEO Steve Jobs, who took a controversial stand by not supporting Flash on Apple&#8217;s mobile products.&#8221;</p>

<p>Adobe is all about enabling designers and developers to create the most expressive content possible, regardless of platform or technology. For more than a decade, Flash has enabled the richest content to be created and deployed on the web by reaching beyond what browsers could do. It has repeatedly served as a blueprint for standardizing new technologies in HTML. Over the past two years, we&#8217;ve delivered Flash Player for mobile browsers and brought the full expressiveness of the web to many mobile devices.</p>
<p>However, HTML5 is now universally supported on major mobile devices, in some cases exclusively. This makes HTML5 the best solution for creating and deploying content in the browser across mobile platforms. We are excited about this, and will continue our work with key players in the HTML community, including Google, Apple, Microsoft and RIM, to drive HTML5 innovation they can use to advance their mobile browsers.</p>
<p>Our future work with Flash on mobile devices will be focused on enabling Flash developers to package native apps with Adobe AIR for all the major app stores. We will no longer continue to develop Flash Player in the browser to work with new mobile device configurations (chipset, browser, OS version, etc.) following the upcoming release of Flash Player 11.1 for Android and BlackBerry PlayBook. We will of course continue to provide critical bug fixes and security updates for existing device configurations. We will also allow our source code licensees to continue working on and release their own implementations.</p>
<p>These changes will allow us to increase investment in HTML5 and innovate with Flash where it can have most impact for the industry, including advanced gaming and premium video. Flash Player 11 for PC browsers just introduced dozens of new features, including hardware accelerated 3D graphics for console-quality gaming and premium HD video with content protection. Flash developers can take advantage of these features, and all that our Flash tooling has to offer, to reach more than a billion PCs through their browsers and to package native apps with AIR that run on hundreds of millions of mobile devices through all the popular app stores, including the iTunes App Store, Android Market, Amazon Appstore for Android and BlackBerry App World.</p>
<p>We are already working on Flash Player 12 and a new round of exciting features which we expect to again advance what is possible for delivering high definition entertainment experiences.  We will continue to leverage our experience with Flash to accelerate our work with the W3C and WebKit to bring similar capabilities to HTML5 as quickly as possible, just as we have done with CSS Shaders.  And, we will design new features in Flash for a smooth transition to HTML5 as the standards evolve so developers can confidently invest knowing their skills will continue to be leveraged.</p>

<p>The man keeps his promise with a new installment that has lots more action. </p>
<p>I read the classic book when I was but a wee lass, so I will be very interested to see how it comes to life.</p>

<p>Saul Hansell, the prominent former New York Times tech reporter who went to AOL several years ago to head one of its content efforts called <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20091211/aols-newest-hire/">Seed</a>, will leave the company to become an entrepreneur in residence at Betaworks.</p>
<p>The move to the New York venture firm is the right one now, said Hansell in an interview today. </p>
<p>&#8220;I have been watching people go starts thing for a long time and now I want to go start things,&#8221; he said. &#8220;I&#8217;ve got some ideas around news that I want to explore.&#8221;</p>
<p>Hansell, in a <a href="http://saulhansell.blogspot.com/2011/11/heading-into-workshop.html ">blog post</a>, did try to not paint the move as as anti-AOL one:</p>
<p>&#8220;I know my friends in the technology press well enough to suspect some of them will see my move as part of a broader trend at AOL. I&#8217;m not sure the easy take is the right one. Based on my experience, I am more bullish on [AOL CEO] Tim Armstrong&#8217;s clear vision of a company built from the ground up for online journalism and the potential of AOL&#8217;s assets to achieve that vision.&#8221;</p>
<p>Hansell joined AOL the day after it split from Time Warner to run what he jokingly calls the &#8220;free-range, organic content farm&#8221; of Seed and has remained through its many iterations, including the purchase of the Huffington Post. </p>
<p>He is currently the &#8220;Big News&#8221; editor in that unit, which centers around topics. </p>
<p>Here&#8217;s Hansell&#8217;s blog post on the move:</p>

<p>Two years ago, when I explained to my children why I left the New York Times, one of the greatest spots ever to be a reporter and writer, I told them that I wanted to be an inventor. Since then, I&#8217;ve had the thrilling experience of being part of AOL, which is doing more than nearly anyone else to rethink the way that news is gathered, presented and paid for.</p>
<p>Now it&#8217;s time to strike out on my own and seek my fortune as an inventor. I&#8217;ve left AOL, and Monday I started as an entrepreneur in residence at Betaworks. If you&#8217;re not familiar with it, Betaworks has started and invested in a number of companies that are on the vanguard of real-time social experiences &#8212; several of which relate to news and publishing &#8212; including Bit.ly, ChartBeat, TweetDeck, and News.Me. It&#8217;s run by John Bortwick, whom I first met in 1997 when he sold his startup, Total New York, to America Online. We&#8217;ve become friends, and I couldn&#8217;t think of a more fertile environment in which to germinate a new idea than the bustle of creativity bursting out of the Betaworks loft in the meat packing district.</p>
<p>I know my friends in the technology press well enough to suspect some of them will see my move as part of a broader trend at AOL. I&#8217;m not sure the easy take is the right one. Based on my experience, I am more bullish on Tim Armstrong&#8217;s clear vision of a company built from the ground up for online journalism and the potential of AOL&#8217;s assets to achieve that vision. At AOL, I&#8217;ve had the pleasure of working with some of the smartest and most dedicated journalists, engineers and product executives I&#8217;ve ever met. And the brilliant acquisition of the Huffington Post brought in many more people who have been outpacing the industry through journalistic innovation.</p>
<p>I will always be grateful to Tim for giving me the chance to prove that I had more to contribute to a journalistic organization than simply articles and to Arianna for inviting me to join the HuffPost team. And I&#8217;m in debt to so many who offered so much advice &#8211;some of which I ignored to my own detriment &#8212; on the nuances of technology, product design, PowerPoint, and the ways of big companies. Yet as AOL continues to refine its organization, it became clear that this was the time for me to try my hand at starting a company.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s too soon to say much about what I&#8217;m doing. But I think there is a lot left to invent around both how to present news to people that takes advantage of the technology available today.</p>

<p>Tonight at 1 am PT, techies who have nothing else to do &#8212; that would be <em>me!</em> &#8212; can click onto a brand new tech site called The Verge.</p>
<p>Well, kind of &#8212; it&#8217;s the result of many months of work by the gang that <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110312/engadgets-top-editors-topolsky-and-patel-exit-from-aols-giant-tech-site/">defected from AOL&#8217;s popular Engadget</a> tech powerhouse,<a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110403/sb-nation-sacks-aol-in-raid-of-former-engadget-team-for-competing-new-tech-site/"> set up temporary shop</a> under the Web site name This Is My Next and busied themselves with <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110718/new-tech-gadget-news-site-name-the-verge/">creating The Verge</a>.</p>
<p>I have another screenshot below of the new site that will be focused on news, reviews and features about tech, and which has been getting a final tweaking all today.</p>
<p>From my quick perusal, it has a vibrant and slick design, with a lot of packed boxes, swooshy movement and plenty of content.</p>
<p>Along with the launch, The Verge&#8217;s parent company &#8212; formerly doing business as SB Nation, focused on sports &#8212; will also transform into Vox Media. </p>
<p>In a chit-chat with Vox&#8217;s CEO Jim Bankoff, top exec <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110406/former-aol-media-exec-marty-moe-to-join-engadget-gang-of-eight-at-sb-nation/">Marty Moe</a> and Josh Topolsky, The Verge&#8217;s Editor-in-Chief, the trio of former AOLers all said they were going to for the big time.</p>
<p>&#8220;We want to build the platform for talented native Web voices, in sports and tech for now, and then we plan to grow more verticals,&#8221; said Bankoff.</p>
<p>&#8220;We want to create more than a news site or blog about tech &#8212; the frustration at AOL was that we did not get the resources or manpower to realize that bigger vision,&#8221; said Topolsky.</p>
<p>(You&#8217;re speaking to the choir, <em>brother</em>!)</p>
<p>Said Moe: &#8220;We think this category has not had a large enough vision&#8230;not enough has been innovated over the years and we think it is a big opportunity.&#8221; </p>
<p>Topolsky said the site, along with a mass of original content from 30 writers, will also be helped by a strong database of information about all its topics and gadgets and also focus a lot on community input.</p>
<p>&#8220;What we want to do was graduate beyond the blog,&#8221; he said.</p>
<p>(Hmm&#8230;and here I just got the hang of this blog thing.)</p>
<p>Bankoff, who would not say how much Vox spent on launching The Verge &#8212; my back-of-the-envelope guess, several million dollars &#8212; said that costs were spread out between the tech and sports sites with centralized sales and product teams.</p>
<p>Initial launch sponsors are BMW, Sony and Samsung, said Moe, who is aiming to sell &#8220;major brand advertisers on the idea that we will be the premiere destination of consumer tech coverage.&#8221;</p>
<p>It has to grow past big sites like Engadget to do so, but Topolsky said that This Is My Next had three million unique visitors in the last month and more than 10 million page views. </p>
<p>&#8220;We have done that with a lot of editorials and in-depth reviews,&#8221; he said. &#8220;I think people are really hungry for great content and stories.&#8221;</p>
<p>As to competitors, Topolsky said that &#8220;this not to necessarily I win if you lose,&#8221; although his clear aim is to unseat sites like CBS-owned CNET, Engadget and Gawker Media&#8217;s Gizmodo and perhaps even newsier sites such as TechCrunch and <strong>AllThingsD</strong> (<em>as if!</em>).</p>
<p>&#8220;We are going to do the nuts and bolts stuff,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Somewhere between Engadget and Wired.&#8221;</p>
<p>Topolsky compared The Verge to a &#8220;boutique hotel &#8212; we have the same stuff everyone else has, but it is a much more elegant experience.&#8221;</p>
<p>Later, that will change, he promised, noting that &#8220;this is only version 1.0.&#8221;</p>
<p>Of course &#8212; but what else would you expect from a gadget site?</p>

<p>It&#8217;s official: Seven billion people are alive in the world at this moment, a high population point of all time.</p>
<p>Births are obviously outstripping deaths by a little more than two to one.</p>
<p>Here is a really cool site called <a href="http://www.worldometers.info/">Worldometers</a> that has the countdown and all kinds of other cool stats, accounting for our little and now more crowded world. </p>
<p>The section on society and media is particularly terrific, showing how many cellphones are being sold, emails sent, tweets posted and, of course, blogs created. Like this one, blink and you will definitely miss it.</p>
<p>And note how much slower new book titles published and televisions sold are in comparison to digital stats.</p>
<p>Facebook, by the way, is now closing on one billion users, sources said &#8212; although the <a href="http://www.facebook.com/press/info.php?statistics">official number for the huge social networking site here</a> is 800 million.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The long saga of a lost iPhone prototype has finally come to an end.</p>
<p>Brian John Hogan, 22 years old, and Sage Robert Wallower, 28, pleaded no contest on Tuesday to misdemeanor theft of lost property for selling an Apple Inc. iPhone prototype for $5,000 to a technology blog in 2010. The pair was sentenced to one year of probation and 40 hours of public service, according to San Mateo County District Attorney Stephen Wagstaffe.</p>
<p>Messrs. Hogan and Wallower are also required to pay Apple a total of $250 in restitution. Mr. Wagstaffe said the pair are allowed to keep the $4,750 they made on the sale.</p>
<p>The sentencing brings to a conclusion a particularly weird episode &#8212; even by Silicon Valley&#8217;s skewed standards. At one point, a special police task force kicked in a reporter&#8217;s door in search of evidence.</p>

<blockquote class="memo"><p>Michelle and I are saddened to learn of the passing of Steve Jobs. Steve was among the greatest of American innovators &#8211; brave enough to think differently, bold enough to believe he could change the world, and talented enough to do it.<br />
By building one of the planet’s most successful companies from his garage, he exemplified the spirit of American ingenuity. By making computers personal and putting the internet in our pockets, he made the information revolution not only accessible, but intuitive and fun. And by turning his talents to storytelling, he has brought joy to millions of children and grownups alike. Steve was fond of saying that he lived every day like it was his last. Because he did, he transformed our lives, redefined entire industries, and achieved one of the rarest feats in human history: he changed the way each of us sees the world.<br />
The world has lost a visionary. And there may be no greater tribute to Steve’s success than the fact that much of the world learned of his passing on a device he invented. Michelle and I send our thoughts and prayers to Steve’s wife Laurene, his family, and all those who loved him.</p></blockquote>

<p>The Huffington Post Media Group, which says it has topped one billion page views for the month of August, has bought an online grassroots platform called Localocracy.</p>
<p>The price for the site, whose key execs will join the AOL content unit, is under $1 million, said sources close to the situation.</p>
<p>The HuffPost also announced it was hiring Lisa Belkin from the New York Times to be a senior columnist covering parenting and family issues.</p>
<p>The latest hiring and purchase are part of a number of moves at the news and blog site, which has been frantically expanding its offerings since it was acquired by AOL.</p>
<p>That now includes four more sections launching this week &#8212; Huff/Post50; HuffPost Gay Voices; HuffPost Weddings; and HuffPost High School &#8212; bringing the grand total of new sites to 21 since the Huffington Post officially merged with AOL in March.</p>
<p>&#8220;We want to launch sections for every interest and passion our readers have.&#8221; said HuffPost head Arianna Huffington in an interview yesterday. &#8220;Whatever your interest, we want to provide the latest content and stories and most advanced tools for engagement.&#8221;</p>
<p>And, presumably, get the most traffic from it all. Along with the record one billion page views, the site also said it had 37 million unique visitors in August, the largest number it has posted yet, with 5.1 million comments.</p>

<p>Think about the <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110831/doj-seeks-to-block-att-t-mobile-merger/">federal government&#8217;s blocking of the $39 billion AT&#038;T and T-Mobile merger</a> and you might want to reread Google&#8217;s blog today, penned in reaction to the news that the Justice Department is <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110928/feds-taking-close-look-at-google-motorola-deal/">making a second request</a> for information about its $12.5 billion acquisition of Motorola Mobility.</p>
<p>&#8220;This is pretty routine,&#8221; wrote Google&#8217;s Motorola integration exec <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110924/googles-woodside-to-lead-motorola-mobility-integration/">Dennis Woodside</a>. &#8220;We&#8217;ve gotten these kind of requests before.&#8221;</p>
<p>Maybe Google has (and it has with other purchases) &#8212; but in actuality, only four percent of transactions got such a follow-up request from regulators.</p>
<p>To be fair, it is much more common in high-profile, big-money deals like this one, but it means a longer closing period and more uncertainty around the Android mobile ecosystem until it&#8217;s done. </p>
<p>Still, Google has good reason to be patient. Despite tough criticism and brutal lobbying, it won approval from Justice for its $700 million deal to <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110413/google-ita-software-acquisition-now-complete/">buy flight data service ITA Software</a> in April, after nine months of scrutiny and a number of conditions imposed.</p>
<p>And the search giant waited out an intense six-month Federal Trade Commission approval process last year for its $750 million acquisition of <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20100521/ftc-gives-google-admob-deal-green-light-a-big-bouquet-of-flowers-sent-to-apple/">mobile advertising start-up AdMob</a>. It had an even harder time with the FTC&#8217;s nod of its 2007 <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20070502/microsoft-247/">DoubleClick purchase</a> for $3.1 billion.</p>
<p>One that it lost &#8212; an <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20080410/microhoo-jesus-is-coming-look-busy/">obvious bridge too far</a> that I dubbed <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20081105/google-dumps-yahoo-which-should-come-as-a-shock-only-to-yahoo/">Yahoogle</a> &#8212; was Google&#8217;s 2008 effort to meld a troubling partnership with Yahoo in search advertising.</p>
<p>So, we&#8217;ll see soon enough which way D.C. &#8212; which just had Google Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt up to the <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110921/liveblogging-googles-schmidt-at-senate-antitrust-hearing/">Senate for an antitrust hearing chit-chat</a> &#8212; will go.</p>

<p>Since we announced our plans to acquire Motorola Mobility, we&#8217;ve been excited about the positive reaction to the proposed deal &#8212; particularly from our partners who have told us that they&#8217;re enthusiastic about our defense of the Android ecosystem.</p>
<p>And as David Drummond said when we announced our plans in August, we&#8217;re confident that this deal will be approved. We believe very strongly this is a pro-competitive transaction that is good for Motorola Mobility, good for consumers, and good for our partners. </p>
<p>That said, we know that close scrutiny is part of the process and we&#8217;ve been talking to the U.S. Department of Justice over the past few weeks. Today we received what is called a &#8220;second request,&#8221; which means that the DOJ is asking for more information so that they can continue to review the deal. (This is pretty routine; we&#8217;ve gotten these kind of requests before.)</p>
<p>While this means we won&#8217;t be closing right away, we&#8217;re confident that the DOJ will conclude that the rapidly growing mobile ecosystem will remain highly competitive after this deal closes. We&#8217;ll be working closely and cooperatively with them as they continue their review.</p></blockquote>
