<p>Facebook has <a href="http://developers.facebook.com/blog/post/538/">launched a major redesign for games</a>, bringing back some viral components that were turned off after users complained about random alerts cluttering their news feeds.</p>
<p>The updates were announced Thursday evening, just hours after <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110811/like-it-or-not-google-has-added-games-to-google/">Google unveiled its games network</a> that offers game makers <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110811/how-google-games-undercuts-both-facebook-and-apple/">a larger cut of the revenues than Facebook does</a>.</p>
<p>Facebook&#8217;s new features will likely be favorable to developers, who are constantly looking for new ways to get players to discover their games, but it&#8217;s questionable how the social network&#8217;s audience will react.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s been more than a year since Facebook shut off developers&#8217; ability to post messages to people&#8217;s walls &#8212; messages that asked friends to help look for their lost cow or plow their crops. When users complained, Facebook cracked down significantly, which made it much more difficult for developers to find new players for their games.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, Google announced today that it is trying hard to contain all game activities to a particular tab under a user&#8217;s profile to steer clear of ever being accused of spamming a person&#8217;s communication flow.</p>
<p>Bradley Horowitz, VP of Product for Google+, told me that there&#8217;s a name for unwanted solicitations: Spam.</p>
<p>&#8220;We do not want to inundate you with things that are not relevant,&#8221; he added.</p>
<p>It seems that Facebook is now looking for some middle ground to give developers another way to find new consumers.</p>
<p><a href="http://developers.facebook.com/blog/post/538/">In a blog post</a>, Facebook said its began rolling out a new ranking system with the goal of only surfacing relevant items to friends, including &#8220;high quality content from apps.&#8221;</p>
<p>Messages will even appear in the feed of a person who doesn&#8217;t already use the app.</p>
<p>Apparently some of the responsibility will fall on the users to determine what they end up seeing. For instance, apps that post content which results in high usage will be posted more often; conversely, apps that have content &#8220;that is frequently hidden or marked as spam&#8221; will be posted less often.</p>
<p>Given that users will have to manually participate in marking alerts, it&#8217;s hard to understand how this does not represent a reinstatement of the social network&#8217;s old viral channels that people loved to loathe.</p>
<p>Beyond reinstating some viral components, Facebook users will also notice other obvious changes, like a live ticker of real-time game-related updates; bookmarks, where users can select their favorite apps; and leaderboard-type features, where users can post achievements and scores to make game play more competitive.</p>
<p>Another major update will give developers the ability to expand the size of their games so people can expand the game to the full screen of their browser.</p>

<p>The tool, called uProtect.it, works like this: Users get the app and activate it on Facebook with a bookmark. Then they write a comment and choose which of their friends can see it. Instead of the comment being posted normally on Facebook, uProtect.it posts a message saying that the comment is encrypted and can be seen by clicking on a link. Only those friends who are allowed to see the message can decode it when the link is clicked; even Facebook doesn’t have access.</p>
<p>“Essentially you’re creating an encrypted atmosphere on Facebook, and Facebook can’t control it,” said Michael Fertik, the founder and chief executive of Reputation.com Inc., which makes the app.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>It&#8217;s official, the holiday shopping season has begun and it&#8217;s time to get serious about gift lists. This week, I took a closer look at some online services that could help you—or those shopping for you—find and buy the right gifts.</p>
<p>While there are many services around, I&#8217;ll just touch on a handful of them, including some that take advantage of social networking and group buying.</p>

<p>Bing, Microsoft&#8217;s search engine, is jumping into the wish-list action this holiday season with the Bing Shopping List. Starting Wednesday, this feature lets people add items to a saved wish list by simply check-marking an on-screen box in shopping search results. Shopping search results are displayed by clicking the Shopping tab in Bing search results or by selecting Shopping on Bing.com and going from there. Once an item&#8217;s box has been checked, a small, in-browser visual of all items added to the wish list is displayed in the lower left corner of the browser window. Lists are saved between sessions, so you can close your browser and open it another time and work with the same saved list.</p>
<p>In addition to collecting a list of wished-for items, the Bing Shopping List lets people share those lists with their Facebook friends, giving them a chance to see and buy items from someone else&#8217;s wish list. Or people can use Bing Shopping Lists to select just a couple items, share them with the Facebook community, and ask for friends&#8217; opinions about which product is better. Users may get feedback from friends they wouldn&#8217;t otherwise know were experts in certain areas.</p>
<p>A Microsoft spokesman said the impetus for this came from trends the company saw taking place on the Web—specifically, people using Facebook to solicit opinions about what to buy and to tell others what they want. </p>
<p>A downside to the Bing Shopping Lists is that they don&#8217;t yet offer a way to share items with only certain people, which might mean sharing a private gift with all your Facebook friends. And you can&#8217;t yet create multiple lists. A way to share items with only certain people and options for create multiple lists are on the product road map for next year, according to a company spokesman.</p>
<p>Speaking of social networks, Sears is taking a unique approach to the group-buying concept with Wish Together, a program launched in mid-November. With Wish Together, Sears puts at least one new item on its Facebook page (facebook.com/sears) each day. If enough people click on the item&#8217;s &#8220;Like&#8221; button before a certain time, a steep discount on the item becomes unlocked, like a diamond necklace that originally cost $285 will cost $100 at its Wish Price if it gets the required 200 &#8220;likes.&#8221; People can see the number of necessary &#8220;Likes&#8221; and time remaining (down to the second) displayed on the item&#8217;s Wish Together Facebook page.Once a Wish Together deal is unlocked, it&#8217;s available to everyone—not just those who originally &#8220;liked&#8221; it. But those who &#8220;liked&#8221; the item get an email notification from Facebook as soon as the deal is unlocked so they can buy it while supplies last. </p>

Bing is jumping into the wish-list action this holiday season with the Bing Shopping List</div>
<p>The tried and true Amazon Wish List, which has been around for 11 years, can be used to add wish-list items from any website, not just Amazon.com. This works using the site&#8217;s Universal Wish List. It can be set up by dragging an &#8220;Add to Wishlist&#8221; bookmark (<a href="http://3.ly/G82n">http://3.ly/G82n</a>) into your browser&#8217;s bookmark bar. Then you just click the bookmark whenever you&#8217;re on the specific Web page of an item you&#8217;d like to add to your Wish List. A small pop-up menu lets users designate a specific Amazon Wish List or add their own notes about an item. Universal Wish List browser extensions, or shortcuts built right into a Web browser, are available for Google&#8217;s Chrome, Apple&#8217;s Safari and Mozilla&#8217;s Firefox browser. Some online retailers like <a href="http://ModCloth.com">ModCloth.com</a>, save you a step by offering &#8220;Add To Amazon Wish List&#8221; buttons right on their websites. Amazon Wish Lists can be shared to friends through Facebook or Twitter using a link on the list&#8217;s webpage. </p>
<p>There are many Facebook apps for creating wish lists and sharing them with Facebook friends. I tried a couple apps, including a basic one called Fulfill My Wishlist (<a href="http://3.ly/3u3d">http://3.ly/3u3d</a>). It let me search a shopping portal (that uses Google Shopping in the background) for items to add to my wish list, or let me copy and paste a link for any item to appear in my list. A notes section for each item allows room for describing details like preferred size or style. This list can be emailed to friends or viewed through the Facebook app by friends who use it. </p>
<p>If you&#8217;re planning to go in on buying a pricey gift with several other people, a group-gift option like eBay&#8217;s might be the right tool for you. EBay introduced its Group Gifts feature (<a href="http://groupgifts.ebay.com">groupgifts.ebay.com</a>) in November. It lets several people pool their money to buy one item without one person chasing down those who owe money.</p>
<p>One person chooses an eBay item and selects the Buy It Now option (auction prices aren&#8217;t applicable when you need to tell the group how much they&#8217;ll definitely owe). The initiator tells the group how much he or she will pay and then shares the item with others via email, Facebook or Twitter, in hopes of getting contributions. A PayPal account is required for at least one person in the group to ultimately pay for the item, but gift contributors can chip in using credit or debit cards, and they can add their own notes to a gift. </p>
<p>Thanks to technology, there are many ways to direct your friends and family toward exactly what you want for the holidays, taking much of the guesswork out of giving and receiving this year. </p>

<p>If you&#8217;re impatient, here&#8217;s the summary of the 90-second video: It shows a bunch of iPad-specific apps.</p>
<p>Beyond that, there&#8217;s not much to say other than the fact that Yahoo (YHOO) and Reuters appear to be the only two media companies that have a spot in iTunes&#8217; coveted &#8220;new and noteworthy&#8221; showcase. But given that we don&#8217;t know if this video is current (or even real), it&#8217;s hard to imbue any of this with much meaning.</p>
<p>I do have a request for iPad leakers, though: If you have access to a review copy, could you let us know which Web sites Apple (AAPL) has pre-bookmarked for reviews? Because that may tell us something.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s why: A Web publisher tells me that Apple approached this source&#8217;s company this winter and encouraged it to prep its site for the device. That is: Lots of HTML5, no Adobe (ADBE) Flash. In return, the publisher is supposed to get a boost from Apple via endorsements like pre-installed bookmarks and the like. Thanks in advance for your help.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Sony, the Japanese electronics giant, was a pioneer in the current wave of electronic book readers, introducing its first Sony Reader model back in 2006. But, it has been overtaken by Amazon.com, whose Kindle e-book reader, introduced in 2007, has become almost synonymous with the category. Now, Sony (SNE) is out with a much-improved model that could make it more competitive. </p>
<p>Unlike the Kindle, Sony&#8217;s readers weren&#8217;t wireless and their owners couldn&#8217;t download books or newspapers directly to the device, instead of via a computer. Now, that problem has finally been solved with Sony&#8217;s new Reader Daily Edition, a handsome $400 wireless model that I&#8217;ve been testing.</p>

<p>The Daily Edition can be bought at Sony&#8217;s stores; at its Web site, sonystyle.com; and at Best Buy&#8217;s (BBY) site, bestbuy.com. It was sold out for the holidays, but Sony says it expects new stock soon.</p>
<p>The Daily Edition isn&#8217;t a mere clone of the Kindle. It has a different design philosophy and is stronger in some areas, weaker in others. In general, I enjoyed using it, once I mastered its user interface, which took several days. I especially liked the fact that it packs a larger screen into a comfortably small device, and mostly uses touch navigation instead of all physical controls. For instance, while the Sony does have a small page-turning button, you can more easily turn pages by just swiping your finger across the screen. It&#8217;s also better at navigating digital newspapers, something I&#8217;ve never found very satisfying on the Kindle.</p>
<p>(Full disclosure: Sony has struck a special deal with Dow Jones, which owns The Wall Street Journal and this Web site. Under the deal, a special late-day edition of the Journal, containing updated news, will be available on the Daily Edition for an extra charge starting later in January.)</p>
<p>On the downside, the Daily Edition has three main flaws when compared with the Kindle. First, it&#8217;s much more expensive—$400 versus just $259. Second, it has only about half of the commercial, copyrighted digital books that Amazon (AMZN) does—around 200,000 versus the Kindle&#8217;s roughly 400,000. Sony also throws in a million out-of-copyright, old books, for a total of 1.2 million. </p>
<p>But many of these added million titles are obscure and of little interest to mainstream consumers. The Reader also has just eight newspapers, versus 92 for the Kindle, though Sony says 10 more are coming soon.</p>
<p>Third, the technology that makes the screen touch sensitive also dims it a bit, so the Daily Edition&#8217;s screen is darker than the Kindle&#8217;s. (Both are unlit monochrome screens with gray-scale graphics.) I found the Sony screen adequate, but it&#8217;s tougher to read in lower light.</p>
<p>The Daily Edition is a slender device with a black metal body that contrasts sharply with the wider, white plastic body of the Kindle. While both products use the same basic screen technology, and the same screen width, the Daily Edition&#8217;s screen is longer; it measures 7 inches versus 6 inches for the Kindle. In my tests, I found this a big advantage, because, when both devices were set for roughly comparable text sizes, the Sony could hold more text on a page, cutting down on the need for page turns, which interrupt reading.</p>
<p>In addition, the Daily Edition is narrower than the Kindle, because the borders around the screen are thinner, since they don&#8217;t have to accommodate the Kindle&#8217;s various large buttons or physical keyboard. (You can enter text for notes or searches on the Daily Edition using a stylus for handwriting or a virtual onscreen keyboard.) This longer, narrower shape gives the new Sony a nice feel in the hand.</p>
<p>I also preferred the Sony&#8217;s method for presenting newspapers, which allowed more headlines to be viewed at once and required fewer steps to navigate through the paper.</p>

<p>The Sony also claims more battery life with wireless turned off, comes with a cover included—an extra-cost item on the Kindle—and can handle more book formats, including the free digital books offered by public libraries. Built-in memory is the same, but the Daily Edition&#8217;s can be expanded while the Kindle&#8217;s can&#8217;t.</p>
<p>Like the Kindle, the new Sony also allows you to drag songs, pictures and some personal documents onto the device from your computer. I did this with no problems.</p>
<p>The Daily Edition has companion software for buying, reading and storing books on both PCs and Macs. But it has no app for a smart phone, and doesn&#8217;t synchronize your last-read place in your book among the reader and the computer.</p>
<p>Also, I found the Daily Edition required a harder learning process than the Kindle. First, it takes awhile to get the hang of the touch gestures, partly because they require much more pressure than on, say, an iPhone. Second, using touch to bring up features and menus can be a mystery until you consult the manual. For instance, it took days to discover that you could set a bookmark by double-tapping on the upper right corner.</p>
<p>But, all in all, despite its higher price, the Daily Edition is a big leap for Sony and adds another good choice for consumers.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Makeovers are always fun to watch. Someone swoops in on an unsuspecting fashion “don’t,” improves him or her with a new hairstyle, makeup and wardrobe, and presents the finished product to overjoyed friends and family.</p>
<p>Last week, Yahoo (YHOO) unveiled the results of its latest makeover: the revamped home page. Carol Bartz, the company’s relatively new CEO, has said that Yahoo’s home page needed just such  a makeover. After not changing significantly since 2006, the home page fits the role of a fashion don’t. And consumers, like family and friend observing the aftermath of a makeover, will either be overjoyed or nonplussed by the finished product.</p>

<p>I’ve been using this new home page for over a week now and I can report that Yahoo followed one of the most important makeover rules by doing more with less. Gone is the busy screen saturated with advertisements and clutter. The new home page is clean and easier to absorb.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Favorite ‘Apps’</h5>
<p>Yahoo’s home-page makeover goes beyond surface improvements. Its most useful feature is a list called My Favorites, which contains a variety of Web sites from within and outside of Yahoo. When your cursor hovers over one of these entries, which Yahoo calls “apps,” a pane opens with a preview of content from that site. This turns your Yahoo home page into an aggregator of information, bringing glimpses of information to you in one place so you don’t have to waste time navigating to other sites.</p>
<p>But if a greater number of these apps were more robust, you would be able to do more right within the hover pane, like watch videos or play a game. Currently, the hover preview pane only lets you see content, update social-network statuses and enter search terms, the results of which are shown on a new Web page.</p>

<p>This makeover comes at an interesting time in the world of online news aggregation. Competitors like Google (GOOG) and Microsoft (MSFT) incorporate data from all over the Web into iGoogle.com and MSN.com, respectively. And the concept of the home page as a starting point isn’t as popular as it once was: Many people now start browsing the Web by first clicking on a link in an email or in one of many social-networking sites, like Twitter.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Traffic Driver</h5>
<p>Of course, Yahoo plans to use this redesigned home page to drive traffic to the company’s own sites like Shine, Answers, Health and OMG (a celebrity gossip site). These Yahoo sites make up half of the 65 apps designed especially for My Favorites. Yahoo says that its apps for other sites, including WSJ.com, were made by Yahoo and the outside company running the Web site. An ad runs on the hover preview page of each app and the revenue for this ad goes to Yahoo, not the content provider.</p>
<p>Yahoo will use your list of My Favorites apps to learn about what sites you use so as to target ads at users. This proved true for most of the ads I saw on my home page, but strangely, the AllThingsD.com app displayed ads for Mars chocolate and Del Monte fruit snacks rather than technology products. </p>
<h5 class="subhed">Module Thinking</h5>
<p>My Favorites is fixed on the far left of the Yahoo home page and a large search box sits prominently at the top of the home screen. </p>
<p>The top middle section of the screen shows a carousel of images and current news that Yahoo calls the Today Module; below this is the News Module, which houses tabs labeled News, World, Local, and Finance. The Local and Finance tabs can be customized by entering a ZIP Code and stock tickers, respectively. The Today and News Modules can switch positions if you click on a small arrow.</p>
<p>The revamped home page will serve as a starting point for the Yahoo Application Platform, or YAP. Sometime around late September, Yahoo will open its YAP (no pun intended) to software developers so they can make all kinds of apps with a variety of functions for the home page, not just apps that are tied to Web sites.</p>
<p>You can customize the home page for style or content changes if you sign on using a user ID and password. Changes should appear the next time you log in. But this didn’t work as well as it should. I set my page to display in a tangerine color, one of six colors offered for customizing the page, but the home page wasn’t tangerine-colored the next time I logged in.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Some Problems</h5>
<p>I had trouble logging into my Gmail account using a special Gmail app, but this and the color problem were fixed by the time this column went to press.</p>
<p>Some apps didn’t work at all, like the Facebook app, which couldn’t connect to my Facebook account. Yahoo said the problem should be fixed this week.</p>
<p>The home page seemed to have a longer memory when it came to the list of My Favorites. I edited my list, adding more pre-made apps and creating some of my own using a built-in tool that lets you enter a Web site. Yahoo has preloaded icons for some popular Web sites such as cnn.com; otherwise, it will use a generic star.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Permanent Apps</h5>
<p>Two apps are permanent fixtures at the top of the My Favorites list: One shows a list of all Yahoo sites and the other shows Yahoo Mail. Everything else can be deleted, added and moved around in the list. One of my favorite apps was for Epicurious.com, the food and recipe site. When I hovered over the Epicurious app, images of food with recipe names appeared in the hover preview pane. One click on an image sent me to the Web site for the full version of the recipe.</p>
<p>After adding many of my own apps to My Favorites, I wished Yahoo had a one-click tool for converting my browser bookmarks into apps. Yahoo says this is something it hopes to introduce in the future.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Mobile Rollout</h5>
<p>This week, Yahoo started rolling out a mobile Web site made to run on the iPhone’s Safari browser that coordinates with the more robust version of the home page. I used this Yahoo home page on the iPhone and liked that it immediately pulled up the My Favorites list I had carefully constructed on my computer. Similar offerings will soon be available for other mobile devices.</p>
<p>The new Yahoo home page is a refreshing way of bringing content to you rather than you chasing around the Web looking for it. The My Favorites apps need a little more power to be truly useful and to encourage people to use the Yahoo home page every day, but Yahoo hopes to solve some of that problem in a couple of months when it opens the site to developers.</p>

<p>This new edition of Firefox is the third big new browser release this year, following new editions of Microsoft’s (MSFT) Internet Explorer and Apple’s (AAPL) Safari. Unlike Firefox, these two browsers come bundled with the two major computer platforms, Windows and Mac. By contrast, Mozilla must convince users to download Firefox, which comes in essentially identical versions for both systems. And it has done a reasonably good job, garnering by most estimates around 23% market share, versus between 60% and 70% for IE, which is by far the leader. Meanwhile, Google (GOOG)—a former Firefox supporter—has joined the battle with its nascent Chrome browser, which so far runs only on Windows, but is due on the Mac one day and is to morph into a whole new operating system next year. And there are other very capable browsers with small user bases, the most notable of which is Opera.</p>
<p>I’ve been using Firefox since its inception years ago, and have been testing this latest iteration, version 3.5, since it emerged June 30. I can continue to recommend it as a fine way to surf the Web. The new version is improved, and worked very well for me on both my Windows and Macintosh computers.</p>
<p>But, in this round of the war, Mozilla’s product no longer stands out as clearly superior, for two reasons. First, Firefox has lost its traditionally biggest advantage: greater speed than its rivals. While Firefox 3.5 is about twice as fast as the previous version 3.0, and handily beat Internet Explorer 8 in my tests, it lagged behind both Safari 4.02 and the beta edition of Chrome 2.0 a bit in most test scenarios. Overall, Safari was fastest in most of my tests, both on Mac and Windows (yes, Apple makes a little-known version of Safari for Windows).</p>
<p>In fact, Mozilla no longer is claiming to be the fastest browser. It now prefers to say it is one of what it calls the “modern” browsers, along with Safari and Chrome, whose under-the-hood technologies make them better at handling a growing breed of sophisticated Internet-based applications that mimic traditional computer programs like photo editors and word processors and spreadsheets.</p>
<p>Second, this version of Firefox has relatively few new features, and some of them are merely catch-ups to those introduced earlier by Microsoft and Apple. Most notable among these is a private browsing mode, first popularized in Safari, and greatly expanded in IE, which allows you to traverse Web sites without leaving traces on your computer to show what you’ve been doing.</p>
<p>Mozilla says its main goal from now on will be to turn Firefox into the ideal platform for running Web-based applications. It shares the belief, also fervently embraced by Google, that consumers will gradually migrate away from programs stored on their computers’ hard disks to those stored in “the Cloud,” the industry’s term for the servers that run the Internet.</p>
<p>To show this, the new Firefox can do a few new tricks, like streaming video directly from Web pages without requiring plug-ins like Adobe’s (ADBE) Flash. Alas, this works only with obscure video formats little used on the Web at the moment.</p>
<p>Firefox 3.5 does include some new features, in addition to private browsing. It can pinpoint your location, so that any properly configured Web site can serve up locally relevant content. It has a nice option that lets you “forget” any Web page in your history, wiping out all traces you’ve been there, even if you neglected to turn on private browsing mode beforehand. And it can recover your open tabs after a crash.</p>
<p>Also, Firefox continues to lead its rivals in the number and variety of third-party add-ons that enhance browsing in myriad ways, such as adding features to sites like Twitter or making bookmarking easier.</p>
<p>As for speed, I tested Firefox 3.5 against its main rivals by timing how long it took to launch into the same home page, and how long it took to completely load popular Web sites like Facebook and YouTube. I tested how long it took to completely load folders containing numerous sports and news sites simultaneously. I also ran an industry benchmark test that measures the browsers’ speed at handling an important Web language called JavaScript. I did these tests on the same home network on both a Dell (DELL) and an Apple computer.</p>
<p>While Firefox won a few of these tests, Safari and Chrome won more of them. In most cases, the speed differences weren’t large, except in the case of IE, which was dramatically slower than the others. But this is the first new version of Firefox I’ve tested that didn’t win most of the tests.</p>
<p>Firefox is still a great Web browser, and still much faster than its main rival, Internet Explorer. But its edge is being eroded.</p>

<p>But despite Digg’s move, the controversial practice of framing seems to be making a comeback on the Web. Danny Sullivan, editor of the Web site Searchengineland.com wrote in an article about Digg’s toolbar changes, that Facebook, Ask.com and StumbleUpon have all begun framing links recently.</p>
<p>Web usability expert Jakob Nielsen argues that “frames break the fundamental user model of the web page.” “All of a sudden, you cannot bookmark the current page and return to it (the bookmark points to another version of the frameset), URLs stop working, and printouts become difficult. Even worse, the predictability of user actions goes out the door: who knows what information will appear where when you click on a link?”</p>

<p>The changes alarmed some publishers and Web developers, who worried that sites could lose traffic&#8211;which can affect advertising dollars&#8211;if visitors were bookmarking Digg URLs and not their own, or if the Digg addresses would appear in Google (GOOG) results.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=aapl'>Apple </a>Inc. last summer brought out a promising new service called MobileMe designed to synchronize email, contacts and calendars among any combination of its own Macintosh computers and rival Windows PCs, plus Apple&#8217;s iPhones and iPod Touch devices. It also offered online email, contacts and calendar, online photo galleries, syncing of Web bookmarks and 20 gigabytes of online storage.</p>
<p>The main idea was to replicate for consumers the kind of seamless, over-the-air email, plus contact and calendar updating, available to corporate users via systems like Microsoft&#8217;s (MSFT) Exchange.</p>

<p>The only problem was that MobileMe, which costs $99 a year after a 60-day free trial, and is available at <a href="http://MobileMe.com" rel="external">MobileMe.com</a>, was so buggy and ragged that I couldn&#8217;t recommend it. Apple (AAPL) pledged it would fix MobileMe. So, I have just spent a few weeks testing it again on multiple Windows and Mac computers, and an iPhone.</p>
<p>This time, my verdict is different. Apple has fixed all of the speed and reliability issues I encountered last year. In my new tests, MobileMe&#8217;s email was prompt and reliable. I was able to add, delete or edit a contact or calendar entry on one device, and see these changes almost immediately on all the others, and on the MobileMe Web site. The Web-based photo gallery, which can also house videos, worked fine on both Windows and Mac, and I was able to upload photos to it from my iPhone. The file storage also worked well, and now has a feature that allows you to share files too large to email. And each MobileMe account works with an unlimited number of computers, iPhones and Touches.</p>
<p>But there is one major caveat. While MobileMe works with Windows, it works better with Macs. The main reason for this is that, as I noted last year, its synced calendars and contacts show up in an odd manner in Microsoft Outlook, the most popular calendar and contact program in Windows.</p>
<p>Apple acknowledges the Outlook problems, which show up only in a mixed environment of Macs and Windows PCs, and pledges they will be fixed by the fall. The company says that if you are using MobileMe solely on Windows PCs, with or without an iPhone, the Outlook problem shouldn&#8217;t appear in most cases.</p>

<p>There are other drawbacks for Windows users. While the Web version of MobileMe works fine on Windows in the Firefox Web browser, or with the Windows version of Apple&#8217;s Safari browser, Apple warns that it might not work properly in Microsoft&#8217;s Internet Explorer 7. The site worked well in the new Internet Explorer 8.</p>
<p>In both versions of IE, my tests showed that another MobileMe feature, bookmark syncing, didn&#8217;t work as advertised. Some bookmarks didn&#8217;t appear at all; others were listed alphabetically instead of in their original order. Apple is promising to fix this problem as well.</p>
<p>Some features are available only on Macs. For example, you can upload photos and videos to your MobileMe galleries directly from Apple&#8217;s iPhoto and iMovie programs. On Windows, you have to upload these using the MobileMe Web site.</p>
<p>The Outlook problem works this way. If you have a mixed group of Macs and PCs, and your Mac&#8217;s calendar isn&#8217;t named Calendar, its information won&#8217;t sync with the main calendar in Outlook. It will appear as a separate calendar that requires extra steps to make visible. Worse, if your Mac or iPhone address book contains subgroups of contacts, these appear as separate address books, which require extra steps to make visible and may not properly sync up the same names as the Mac contact groups.</p>
<p>However, MobileMe now finally does a fast, reliable job of syncing calendar and contact items. In my tests, I was repeatedly successful in doing this in a variety of scenarios. I added a new phone number to a contact on my iPhone and, a minute or two later, it was added to that contact in Outlook, in the Mac&#8217;s Address Book program and in the Web-based MobileMe address book. I then changed the contact again in Outlook, and again in the Web-based address book, and the changes appeared everywhere else.</p>
<p>The same process worked with calendar items. None of this required cables (though, for Windows computers, you must first download and install a MobileMe control panel that runs in the background). The only glitch I ran into, which Apple is promising to fix, is that when I switched my iPhone to sync with MobileMe, it wiped out all the custom ringtones I had assigned to particular contacts.</p>
<p>Apple&#8217;s $99 price may seem high, given that you can get some features for much less, even free. And MobileMe lacks some obvious features, like online backup or automatic syncing of all files. Also, there&#8217;s no way to create limited access to allow an assistant or family member to use just your MobileMe online calendar.</p>
<p>But MobileMe finally does give consumers the main email, contact and calendar convenience corporate users rely upon daily.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>As I predicted in my <a href="http://ptech.allthingsd.com/20090225/amazons-kindle-2-improves-the-good-leaves-out-the-bad/">review of Amazon.com&#8217;s Kindle 2 e-book reader</a> last week, the giant bookseller has moved quickly to make the 240,000 book Kindle catalog available on other devices. On Tuesday night, the first Kindle software reader appeared, and it&#8217;s a free iPhone app. Called Kindle for iPhone, the app replicates the basic book-reading functions of the hardware Kindle device, and can be thought of as a complement to that device, which has more features. However, you don&#8217;t have to own a hardware Kindle to use this app. You can now choose instead to use your iPhone or iPod Touch as the reader for books from Kindle&#8217;s catalog.</p>
<p>I tried the new iPhone Kindle app moments after it became available on Apple&#8217;s App Store (AAPL), and my first impression is generally positive. But first, let me note the key features of the hardware Kindle that aren&#8217;t carried over to the iPhone app. It doesn&#8217;t support periodicals. It doesn&#8217;t read books aloud. It doesn&#8217;t allow you to enter notes or highlight text, look up words in a dictionary, or perform searches.</p>

<p>And, if you wish to purchase a new e-book, the Kindle app sends you over to the iPhone&#8217;s Safari Web browser to go the Amazon (AMZN) Web site; it lacks a built-in Kindle store. </p>
<p>However, it is a solid basic app for reading books, and is especially valuable if you already own a hardware Kindle, as I do. In my brief tests, the iPhone app synchronized rapidly and perfectly with my purchased library of Kindle books on Amazon&#8217;s servers, and allowed me to retrieve a previously purchased e-book, without paying again, just as my hardware Kindle does. It also synchronized to the furthest page I had read in that book on my Kindle. After reading for awhile on the iPhone, I performed that process in reverse, and my Kindle took me to the same spot where I had quit reading on the iPhone.</p>
<p>This means that, if I were in line at the grocery store with my iPhone, I could read a few pages of my book, and then, when I picked up my Kindle at home, I could continue reading, starting from the same spot.</p>
<p>I also was able to buy a new book using the iPhone&#8217;s Web bowser, and Amazon gave me a choice of auto-delivering it to either my Kindle or my iPhone, which it treats as just another Kindle. I did so, and it appeared very quickly. I later downloaded it as well to my Kindle.</p>
<p>Reading on the device was easy. You turn pages using the iPhone&#8217;s horizontal swiping gesture, and you can change the font size on the fly, and create bookmarks, which then can be synced back to a Kindle device. You can view any notes you made on a hardware Kindle. And there&#8217;s a slider to quickly go back and forth through chunks of the book.</p>
<p>The only flaw I encountered in my brief testing: if you turn pages too fast you get a fleeting blank page or two.</p>

<p>In two key respects, using the iPhone app seems superior to using a Kindle. First, the iPhone&#8217;s screen is brighter, and supports color, so book covers and illustrations in my test books looked much better on the iPhone than they did on the Kindle. Second, the iPhone is smaller and thus much more portable.</p>
<p>The new Kindle app isn&#8217;t as full-featured as some other e-reader apps for the iPhone, which do allow annotation, searching, and so forth. But it gets the job done and it gives you access to Amazon&#8217;s large catalog, which contains more popular and current commercial titles than other e-book sellers offer.</p>

<p class="question"> <em>Should I install Microsoft&#8217;s &#8220;SP3&#8243; upgrade to Windows XP? I hear opinions on both sides.</em></p>
<p class="answer"> In general, I recommend this upgrade, officially called Service Pack 3, because it beefs up security, and that helps not only you, but all Windows users, to avoid the spread of malicious software. If your PC is more secure, it is less likely to be used as a source from which other PCs can be infected.</p>
<p>I have upgraded a couple of XP PCs to SP3 without any downside. However, like you, I have also heard from some users that the upgrade caused them problems.</p>
<p>As with any major operating-system upgrade, either outcome can occur, depending upon your computer&#8217;s particular configuration and condition. So, if you&#8217;re on the fence, consider your level of concern about security.</p>
<p class="question"> <em>How do cellular data cards compare with fast cable modems in terms of Internet speed? Are these cards more secure than Wi-Fi?</em></p>
<p class="answer"> In my experience, using and testing cellular data cards on various laptops, they typically deliver, in real day-to-day use, somewhere between 300 kilobits per second and 1.5 megabits per second. By contrast, a fast cable Internet service can actually deliver up to 16 mbps. So cable is much faster.</p>
<p>Your security question is much more complicated. Wi-Fi security can range from very poor to quite good. It depends on where and how you use Wi-Fi, how you or others have set up the wireless network, and how you have configured your own computer.</p>
<p>Accessing the Internet over a cellular network is a more controlled process, because the cellphone-network operator manages the transmission, and in most cases supplies and configures the software on your computer. So, it is likely to be safer than the worst Wi-Fi setups. But I would never suggest that cellular data card transmissions are invulnerable to hackers or criminals.</p>
<p class="question"> <em>What&#8217;s the difference between file-based backup and image-based backup software? Why would I choose one over the other?</em></p>
<p class="answer"> Image-based backup software copies an image of your entire hard-disk, including all the programs, settings and obscure files that you never see. While it can be used to recover individual files, in some cases, it is mainly designed to allow you to restore your entire hard disk in the event that you lose it all.</p>
<p>File-based backup software, which is more common among consumers, is typically designed to preserve a copy of only your personal data, the material you can&#8217;t re-purchase or re-install if your hard disk dies.</p>
<p>That includes word-processing files, spreadsheets, presentations, emails, contacts, calendar items, photos and other items you created. It also is often used to back up music and video files that would be time-consuming, or very expensive, to re-acquire. And in some cases, it can preserve settings and preferences, such as Web bookmarks.</p>
<p>Both types of backup generally begin with a time-consuming initial session, followed by shorter sessions to update the backup with incremental changes.</p>
<p>Many people choose file-based backup because it occupies less space, and is generally quicker and also less expensive. Image-based backup is for folks who are willing to spend the added money and time to be sure they can restore their whole computer, or clone its contents completely to another machine.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=goog'>Google</a> has introduced a new Web browser, called Chrome, aimed at wresting dominance of the browser market from <a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=msft'>Microsoft</a>&#8216;s Internet Explorer. The move takes the Google-Microsoft rivalry to a whole new level. If Google succeeds, it will be a big deal, with major ramifications for the future of the Web.</p>
<p>But just how good is Chrome? How does it differ from IE and from less popular, but still important, browsers like Mozilla&#8217;s Firefox and <a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=aapl'>Apple</a>&#8216;s Safari?</p>
<p>I&#8217;ve been testing Chrome for about a week, trying out all its features and using it side by side with Microsoft&#8217;s latest iteration of IE, which came out just last week.</p>

<p>My verdict: Chrome is a smart, innovative browser that, in many common scenarios, will make using the Web faster, easier and less frustrating. But this first version &#8212; which is just a beta, or test, release &#8212; is rough around the edges and lacks some common browser features Google plans to add later. These omissions include a way to manage bookmarks, a command for emailing links and pages directly from the browser, and even a progress bar to show how much of a Web page has loaded.</p>
<p>Chrome&#8217;s interface has some bold changes from the standard browser design. These new features enhance the Web experience, but they will require some adjustment on the part of users. For instance, Chrome does away with most menus and toolbar icons to give maximum screen space for the Web pages themselves. Also, Google has merged the address bar, where you type in Web addresses, with the search box, where you type in search terms. This unified feature is called the Omnibox.</p>
<p>One striking difference in Chrome is how it handles tabs, which display a single Web page. In Chrome, each tab behaves as a separate browser. The bookmarks bar, Omnibox, menus and toolbar icons are located inside the tab, rather than atop the entire browser. The tabs appear at the top of the computer screen. Chrome also groups related tabs. If you open a new tab from a link in a page that&#8217;s already open, that new tab appears next to the originating page, rather than at the end of the row of tabs.</p>
<p>Despite Google&#8217;s claims that Chrome is fast, it was notably slower in my tests at the common task of launching Web pages than either Firefox or Safari. However, it proved faster than the latest version of IE &#8212; also a beta version &#8212; called IE8.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, Microsoft hasn&#8217;t been sitting still. The second beta version of IE8 is the best edition of Internet Explorer in years. It is packed with new features of its own, some of which are similar to those in Chrome, and some of which, in my view, top Chrome&#8217;s features.</p>

<p>For example, while IE8 also groups related tabs, it assigns a different color to each such tab group and allows you to close them all with one click. It has a &#8220;smart&#8221; address box of its own, that drops down a list of suggestions as you type, though it retains a separate search box.</p>
<p>IE8 also has breakthrough privacy features that exceed Chrome&#8217;s, and includes a new technology called Accelerators, which allows you to take rapid action on any selected word or phrase on a Web page, such as generating a map for a place name, without switching to a new page.</p>
<p>As they develop, each of these browsers has a good chance of besting Firefox 3.0, which I have regarded as the best Web browser for Windows, the only operating system on which Chrome currently runs. But they will have to get faster at loading pages. And, to best Firefox on the Macintosh, Google will have to make good on its promise to produce a Mac version of Chrome, something it says it will do in the coming months. Microsoft has no plans to produce a Mac version of IE8.</p>
<p>Chrome and IE8 are far more advanced than Apple&#8217;s Safari. Safari is speedy on both Mac and Windows platforms, but lacks many of the key intelligent features of its newer Google and Microsoft rivals.</p>
<p>Why is Google igniting a new browser war? There are two main reasons, and both involve competing with Microsoft. First, the search giant fears that because its search engine and other major products depend on the browser, Microsoft &#8212; with its rival online products &#8212; might be able to gain an advantage by altering the design of IE, which has roughly a 75% market share.</p>
<p>Second, and more important, Google sees the Web as a platform for the software programs, or applications, that currently run directly on computer operating systems, notably Microsoft&#8217;s Windows. It says current browsers lack the underlying architecture to enable future, more powerful Web applications that will rely more heavily on a common Web programming language called JavaScript. Chrome was designed to be the world&#8217;s speediest browser at handling JavaScript.</p>
<p>That move might one day make Chrome a sort of online operating system that competes with Windows. &#8220;Think of Chrome as more than a simple Web browser,&#8221; Google declares. &#8220;It&#8217;s a platform for running Web applications.&#8221;</p>
<div class="media-LEFT" style="width: 257px;"><a href="http://online.wsj.com/media/WSJ_PTECH2_090208.jpg" rel="lightbox"><img src="http://online.wsj.com/public/resources/images/OB-CF590_ptech2_NS_20080902211553.jpg" alt="Google Chrome" height="186" width="257" /></a><br />Microsoft&#8217;s IE8 has an &#8220;Accelerator&#8221; feature that lets users select any Web text and then map, translate, search or email their selection without leaving the page.</div>
<p>I tested Chrome, and IE8, on a plain-vanilla Lenovo ThinkPad laptop running Windows XP, and equipped with a modest processor and one gigabyte of memory.</p>
<p>To gauge Chrome&#8217;s speed at loading Web pages, I launched two large groups of typical Web pages simultaneously, each site opening in its own tab. One group included 15 sports sites, the second 19 news sites. In both tests, Chrome&#8217;s speed fell in the middle, at 35 and 44 seconds, respectively. IE8 was slower, taking 49 and 75 seconds to open the two groups of sites. But Firefox and Safari were much faster, notching identical speeds of 19 seconds for the 15 sites and 28 seconds for the 19 sites.</p>
<p>Google claims that future, more sophisticated Web applications relying more heavily on JavaScript than today&#8217;s sites do would run faster on Chrome. Of course, I couldn&#8217;t test any claim about future scenarios, but I did run Chrome on several JavaScript test sites, used by developers. It handily beat the other browsers. However, Google doesn&#8217;t claim users would see much difference on current Web application sites.</p>
<p>I also tested Chrome&#8217;s compatibility with scores of common Web sites. In general, it did well, rendering the sites properly. But I ran into problems with video. Some video sites refused to recognize Chrome, because its development has been a secret. On others, like Major League Baseball&#8217;s site, videos mostly played properly, but sometimes didn&#8217;t.</p>
<p>IE8 also has some compatibility issues, for different reasons. It&#8217;s the first version of Internet Explorer to hew closely to Web standards. Earlier versions used some nonstandard ways of rendering Web sites, prompting some site designers to adopt techniques that made their pages work in IE, but look odd in Firefox and Safari. Now, ironically, these pages also look strange in IE8. So Microsoft was forced to build in a special Compatibility View button that users must click to see the sites properly.</p>
<p>Chrome is built on three core design principles. The first is its spare user interface: just two menus and a handful of toolbar icons. IE introduced a similar approach in its version 7, but with a difference. Microsoft allows users to restore a traditional menu bar; Google doesn&#8217;t. The only toolbar icon you can add in Chrome is a Home button.</p>
<p>The second principle is that a user can type anything into a single place, the Omnibox, and instantly get suggestions on where to go, gleaned from the user&#8217;s own browsing history and Google&#8217;s rankings of popular sites. Whether you type in a Web address or a search term, the Omnibox is very smart. In my tests, it sometimes came up with the right destination after I typed only one or two letters of the name of a site I often visited.</p>
<p>The Omnibox has another cool feature: Tab-to-Search. If you type in the name of another site that includes its own search feature, like Amazon.com, the Omnibox lets you just press the tab key to search within that site, without opening it first. Chrome, through its Options settings, also lets you change the default search engine used by the Omnibox. Instead of Google&#8217;s own search service, you can use Microsoft&#8217;s Live search, Yahoo search, or others.</p>
<p>The third big principle behind Chrome is that each tab runs, under the hood, as a separate browser. Tabs can be dragged off the main browser and turned into separate windows. If one tab crashes, the rest of the browser keeps running. But this doesn&#8217;t work perfectly. In my tests, all of Chrome died on me when I tried watching an Olympics video on the NBC site.</p>
<p>You can even make a tab a standalone application that runs from the Start Menu, or the desktop, as if it was a separate program.</p>
<p>Chrome has a few other key features. When you open a new tab, you don&#8217;t get a blank page, but a set of thumbnails for your most-visited pages, plus lists of recent search engines you&#8217;ve used, recently used bookmarks and recently closed tabs.</p>
<p>Like other browsers, Chrome puts up a warning when you try to visit a malicious or phony Web site, and it has a private browsing mode, called Incognito, which allows you to browse without leaving any history on your computer &#8212; a feature popularized in Safari.</p>
<p>Chrome also has a pop-up blocker, but it&#8217;s annoying because it flashes a notice that a pop-up has been blocked. IE also does this, but unlike in Chrome, the warnings are much less intrusive.</p>
<p>Internet Explorer 8 has some new features Chrome lacks. Its private browsing mode, called InPrivate, is the first I&#8217;ve seen that not only leaves no traces on your own computer, but also bars Web sites from collecting some types of information on where you&#8217;ve previously been surfing.</p>
<p>While IE8&#8242;s address box and search box remain separate, each also offers rapid suggestions; and both are organized better than Chrome&#8217;s. For instance, the suggestions that drop down from its address bar are divided neatly into categories drawn from the browser&#8217;s own guess, your history and your favorites. One downside: For this to work in Windows XP, you must first install Microsoft&#8217;s desktop search product.</p>
<p>Like Chrome, IE8 lets you switch your default search provider, but it also allows you to switch search engines on the fly. When you type in a search term, icons for alternate search engines appear at the bottom of the suggestion list, and you need only click on these to see search results from, say, Google, instead of Microsoft&#8217;s own Live search engine.</p>
<p>IE8&#8242;s Accelerators feature presents a blue-arrow icon above any text on a Web page that you have selected. Clicking on the icon brings up a list of actions you can take using the selected text, such as posting it to a blog, emailing it, mapping it or searching it. While these actions are set by default to use Microsoft&#8217;s own Web services, you can change them to use Google&#8217;s, Yahoo&#8217;s, or those from other companies.</p>
<p>Microsoft also has built in a feature called Web Slices. These are portions of a Web site that a site developer can designate to appear in the IE8 Favorites bar and to constantly update themselves. An example might be bidding on eBay.</p>
<p>Like Chrome, IE8 also displays useful information whenever you create a new tab, including a list of recently closed tabs and a list of Accelerators.</p>
<p>With the emergence of Chrome, consumers have a new and innovative browser choice, and with IE8, the new browser war is sure to be a worthy contest.</p>

<p class="answer"> There&#8217;s a $20 program for Windows called Window Washer from Webroot that will wipe an entire hard disk so that its data is unrecoverable. To switch it on again, go to the &#8220;View&#8221; menu, select &#8220;Toolbars&#8221; and then click on &#8220;Navigation Bar.&#8221; The missing panel should reappear, and the next time you view that menu option, you will notice a check mark next to &#8220;Navigation Bar,&#8221; indicating it is on.</p>

<p>However, all current Macs can run Windows and Windows programs. I suggest you pick up a copy of one of two programs &#8212; Parallels Desktop or VMWare Fusion. Both allow you to run Windows programs right alongside your Mac programs, even without displaying the Windows desktop. Microsoft Money would just appear in its own window, as if it were another Mac program.</p>
<p>This method works well, but it carries a price. Fusion and Parallels cost around $60-$70 each, plus you will have to buy and install a full, fresh, boxed copy of Windows.</p>
