Jimmy Kimmel's "Unfriend Day" Is A Hot Start-up Idea

Comedian Jimmy Kimmel may just be trying to make a funny late night TV bit by dubbing today Facebook “Unfriend Day.” But he’s also hit on one of the hottest tech start-up ideas.

The idea behind the day is to encourage people to take stock of their ballooning Facebook friend lists and to cull the marginal folks. Kimmel has been pushing the idea on his ABC show “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” this month, including even a theme song from country singers Brad Paisley and Darius Rucker. The idea seems to have some resonance with people, with “unfriend” turning into a trending topic on Twitter earlier on Wednesday.

In an interview Wednesday with the WSJ’s Video Network’s Simon Constable (see below), Kimmel said, “it just seemed to me that people are wasting a lot of time on Facebook talking to people or catching up with people they don’t want to catch up with.”

He said he actually has just 10 to 12 real friends. Most people on Facebook are “annoying,” he said. “No one needs to know what television show you’re watching or what you just ate, or if you’re feeling hungy, or tired or anything. … Share a little bit less, I think is the message here. For those who have Facebook, whittle it down to the people you really talk to.”

Sign o’ the times. Making its debut on the Billboard Hot 100 hit list at No. 89–just below Justin Bieber and Young Jeezy, and a spot above Brad Paisley–is an Internet interloper: The “Bed Intruder Song,” the latest in the Auto-Tune the News series from the Gregory Brothers. It is undoubtedly the catchiest song ever adapted from a TV interview of a man who thwarted an attempted rape. The video became an immediate YouTube hit when it was posted a few weeks ago, and hot sales of an expanded version in the iTunes music store propelled the song onto the mainstream charts.

BoomTown Choice Brad Paisley Rockets to No. 1

Back in July, BoomTown flagged country song “Online” as a surefire hit.

The video of the song by Brad Paisley from his recent “5th Gear” album had just topped the iTunes chart with its star-studded cast, which included Jason Alexander, William Shatner, Kellie Pickler and the original Marcia Brady, Maureen McCormick. It was a feat no country selection had ever accomplished.

Now the song is the No. 1 hit on Billboard’s hot country songs (and rising to No. 39 on the Hot 100 overall.

Not bad for a geek, y’all.

Or at least the hip-swiveling, guitar-picking country music star understands them.

The video of Paisley’s song, “Online,” from his recent “5th Gear” album, recently topped the chart on iTunes, something no country selection had ever done. It could have been the star-studded cast, which included Jason Alexander, Estelle Harris and Patrick Warburton of “Seinfeld,” as well as William Shatner, Kellie Pickler and the original Marcia Brady, Maureen McCormick.

Why? Well, watch the very funny video below and see the tale of someone who is a little different in real life and on MySpace. As the often clever Paisley writes: “Cause online I’m out in Hollywood/I’m 6 foot 5 and I look damn good … I’m so much cooler online/So much cooler online.”
