ShopRunner is expected to announce the acquisition of PickupZone today, which will help the company's brick-and-mortar partners go head-to-head against the Amazons of the world.

ShopRunner is announcing the acquisition of PickupZone today, which will help the company’s brick-and-mortar partners go head to head against the Amazons of the world.

Flickr: fensterbme

Prior to the acquisition, ShopRunner’s main emphasis was on providing an alternative to Amazon Prime, by offering a loyalty program that offers free two-day shipping across several big-name retailers.

Now, with the acquisition of Boston-based PickupZone, it is rolling out a way for retailers to combat one of Amazon’s newest programs, called Lockers.

One inherent strength of physical retailers is that they have stores where users can shop as well as pick up items they’ve purchased online. Likewise, one of Amazon’s weaknesses is that it is entirely online.

But that could be changing.

The e-commerce giant has started testing out a service called Amazon Lockers, which allows consumers to pick up packages from secure mailboxes at 7-Eleven. So far, the service is being tested on a limited basis in Amazon’s hometown of Seattle.

Earlier this month, we reported that Amazon is working hard to expand Prime beyond Amazon.com, and that there are a number of options for additions, including the ability to pick up items in person.

The early tests by Amazon to provide Lockers — and the possibility of combining the service with Prime — is clearly motivating retailers to leverage their physical stores.

As part of the acquisition, ShopRunner said it will launch PickupPoints, a network of locations at retail stores where ShopRunner members can go to pick up their packages. Between PickupZone’s locations in Boston and Chicago, and store footprints from ShopRunner partners, including Toys “R” Us, American Eagle, PetSmart and Sports Authority, it can easily beat Amazon to the punch by offering more than 30,000 potential pickup spots, the company said.

ShopRunner declined to comment on how much it paid for PickupZone, a privately funded three-year-old company. PickupZone is modeled after Kiala in Europe, which has 7,000 pickup points in five countries, and was recently bought by UPS.

ShopRunner said PickupZone’s co-founder Hooman Hodjat will join the company.

Amazon.com is one of the top picks in e-commerce for the year, mostly because of its dominance, but also because of the opportunities it has going forward in mobile and social networks. Here's how the two factors play a role as e-commerce revenues are expected to jump by 13 percent in 2011.

Amazon has one really big thing going for it that others don’t: Its size.

Being the largest e-commerce company is an obvious barrier to entry, but there are at least two opportunities in 2011 that will drive even more traffic to its site and others: Social and mobile.

A 78-page presentation by J.P. Morgan on the Internet Sector Outlook of 2011, which focuses a lot on the e-commerce market, predicts that the big losers will be physical retailers as more spending shifts online.

If you’ve been reading eMoney, you already knew this. Last month, we referred to these trends as the so-lo-mo trifecta, referencing the impact of social, local and mobile on e-commerce.

In 2010, J.P. Morgan found that nearly 8 percent of Amazon’s traffic was coming from Facebook, compared to 20 percent coming from Google, and that e-commerce revenues are expected to grow by 13.2 percent in 2011.

But as more consumers discover products and services through social networks, like Facebook, and compare prices on their smartphones in stores, traditional brick-and-mortars will lose market share and face bankruptcy, J.P. Morgan concludes. (It’s a small coincidence that Macy’s said it expects to add about 725 new positions over the next two years to beef up its Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s Web sites).

Here’s how J.P. Morgan makes the case for the future of e-commerce:

–U.S. e-commerce revenues totaled $28 billion in 2000, soaring to $166 billion in 2010. Revenues are expected to grow by 13.2 percent in the U.S. this year alone.

–In 2010, 36 percent of people said they bought something online at least once a month. Slightly less, or 32 percent of people, said they purchased one to two items online a month. However, less than 2 percent of folks bought more than 10 items a month.

–Traffic to Amazon’s sites is increasingly coming from Facebook, jumping 328 percent over the past year to almost 8 percent. That compares to almost 20 percent of referrals coming from Google.

–Facebook is driving less traffic to eBay than to Amazon, or roughly 4.7 percent, compared to 11.4 percent from Google.

–E-Commerce 2011 Top Picks: Amazon, Priceline and Latin American e-commerce provider MercadoLibre.

EBay has acquired Milo as a way to add a physical presence to its e-commerce strategy. Milo’s extensive database of products from 50,000 U.S. retail stores, like Best Buy, Sears and Target, will be integrated into the e-commerce giant’s search results to provide local shopping alternatives.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but both TechCrunch and Business Insider peg the price tag at around $75 million in cash.

Analysts have been critical of eBay’s ability to turn its marketplaces unit around as it struggles to maintain its lead against others like Amazon and Google.

The purchase of Milo will help eBay bridge the gap between online shopping and brick-and-mortar locations. Milo’s database will be integrated into RedLaser, a mobile phone app eBay bought earlier this year that allows consumers to check prices in physical stores by scanning a bar code. Likewise, Milo’s sale to eBay will help give it some additional backing as it faces competition from Google, which in March launched the ability to check stock at nearby stores from smartphone devices.

Barnes & Noble's e-reader entry was supposed to have one big advantage over the Kindle--you could buy one at the retailer's stores. But it has been a long time coming, and in the meantime, you may have heard about another compelling e-reader heading to market.

Remember the Nook? Last fall, when the e-reader race was largely defined by Amazon, Barnes & Noble’s device seemed as if it might make a bit of noise: It had an interesting-looking two-screen approach, and–crucially–the bookseller could sell the gadget at its own stores, giving it a brick-and-mortar advantage Amazon couldn’t counter.

That was way back in October, though, and since then, production delays have slowed the Nook’s entry into the market. The devices were hard to buy online for the 2009 holiday season. And they haven’t been available at all in stores–you could talk to a store rep about one, and if you were lucky, you got to fondle one, but that was it.

Now Barnes & Noble (BKS) says that starting Wednesday, the $259 device will be available in the “majority” of its 775 U.S. stores.

Better late than never. But not a lot better.

Barnes & Noble’s problem, of course, is that in the last couple weeks, the e-reader market has been completely redefined, at least among the chattering classes: It’s now Amazon’s (AMZN) Kindle vs. Apple’s (AAPL) iPad.

It’s still theoretically possible for Barnes & Noble–and Sony (SNE), for that matter, as well as Plastic Logic and the other would-be competitors–to elbow their way in, since the e-book market itself is still pretty young.

But they had better move very, very fast. Even if they offer devices that are as good or better than Apple’s or Amazon’s, they’ll be hard-pressed to combat the other huge advantages those two have over the rest of the pack–established e-commerce relationships with a huge customer base.

Microsoft’s first brick-and-mortar retail store isn’t scheduled to open for another few hours, but the software giant is already selling PC hardware and third-party software titles–on the Web. This morning it unveiled an expanded online store that will better reflect its new real-world counterpart.

“On the new online Microsoft Store, we’ve added a bunch of new products, including Windows 7 PCs as well as select 3rd party software and accessories,” Trevin Chow, senior lead program manager for Microsoft Store, said in a blog post announcing the move. “And let’s not forget a ton of gaming products that have been added including a bunch of the top selling Xbox 360 titles.”

Interesting. Not exactly sure what the upside is to selling PCs online when you don’t make them. It’s not like Microsoft (MSFT) will be offering a better experience than, say, Best Buy (BBY), HP (HPQ) or Dell (DELL). And an online outlet doesn’t afford the company the same opportunity to cultivate the “Microsoft Experience” it’s clearly going for in its brick-and-mortar outlets. So why bother?

A unified experience online and off, I suppose. And, if the infrastructure is in place to sell through one channel, why not sell through both? Of course, the downside is that if you don’t execute well, you risk giving customers another lousy experience with which to associate your products.

Remember the last time you set foot in a real brick-and-mortar bank? Me either. And we’re not the only ones. With more and more people managing their financial affairs via PC and mobile device, a bank’s retail presence no longer need be as ubiquitous as it once was.

The latest institution to realize this–Bank of America (BAC) which, according to The Wall Street Journal, plans to close up to 10 percent of its 6,100 branches across the country over the next three-to-five years. It’s not yet known when the closures will begin or exactly how many locations will be closed. BofA says only that “Our vision is the network will be managed downward over time.”

About time too. With fewer and fewer consumers banking at their local branches and remote deposit capture an easy matter via ATM, it seems foolhardy to maintain them.

“They are not economically viable,” Rochdale Securities analyst Dick Bove wrote in a recent note to clients. “The branches are likely to be closed for three reasons: a) branch economics are changing; b) the need for positioning has been reduced; and c) the fear of regulation suggests closing branches now makes sense.

“When America was building new houses in the millions,” Bove continues, “it was creating new neighborhoods. Banks competed with each other to get branches into the new communities in the choicest locations. Branches were often built in supposed choice locations just to keep the competitors out. This strategy has now been abandoned. Many of the new communities have been abandoned. These branches need to be abandoned.”

Blockbuster says it has big plans to grow its business. But if inking a video-on-demand deal with a declining DVR pioneer is one of them... well, that's not much of a plan, is it?

Blockbuster says it has big plans to grow its business. But if inking a video-on-demand deal with a declining DVR pioneer is one of them… well, that’s not much of a plan, is it?

I suppose when your financial statements look like Blockbuster’s, I suppose you cling to life however you can (Blockbuster shares have fallen about 80 percent over the last 12 months). And so, beginning in the second half of 2009, the company will make its Blockbuster On Demand service available to TiVo subscribers. The agreement also calls for Blockbuster’s brick-and-mortar stores to sell TiVo DVRs. “We are excited to be teaming with TiVo, the company that created the DVR, to make Blockbuster’s entertainment content readily available to their millions of subscribers,” said Blockbuster CEO Jim Keyes. “Ultimately, our vision is to work with TiVo so that their subscribers can access movies not only through our On Demand service but also from our stores and through our by-mail service as well.”

For Blockbuster (BBI), the deal is a means of capitalizing on the rising popularity of on-demand video. But to really do that effectively, the company needs alliances with more electronics manufacturers than just TiVo (TIVO). After all, the DVR pioneer isn’t in the greatest of health these days. And Netflix (NLFX) already delivers online video to TiVo and PCs, Macs, Xbox 360s, and selected LG and Samsung Blu-ray players as well. Clearly, Blockbuster is as late to on-demand as it was to DVD-by-mail.

Seems the econalypse and the absence of a “must-have product” really played havoc with spending during our annual consumer binge. Said Baker, “Not only was there not a really hot product, not only did the economy tell people that they shouldn’t buy stuff, but the stuff I have [is] more than good enough in most cases.”

ComScore, the Web analytics company which has been bringing us a weekly installment of grim news about Christmas sales since November, weighs in with its newest update. You may have heard this one before.

ComScore, the Web analytics company that has been bringing us a weekly installment of grim news about Christmas sales since November, weighs in with its newest update. Want to hazard a guess?

Yup, more of the same: Holiday sales from Nov. 1 through Dec. 19 are down one percent compared to the same period in 2007. Which is right in line with comScore’s (SCOR) prediction of flat online sales for the holiday.

If you’d like a rosier glow to these numbers, comScore tries to oblige, by noting that average online spending between Thanksgiving and Dec. 19 is actually up five percent per day. But since there are fewer days between Thanksgiving and Christmas this year compared to previous years, that won’t help retailers’ top or bottom lines.

What are people buying on Amazon (AMZN) and other electronic storefronts? Fewer flat screen TVs, ComScore says, either because promotional discounts have tapered off or because those who need a 42-inch LCD on their walls have already got one.

Meanwhile, I’m not sure what constitutes an online “Sports and Fitness” purchase, but ComScore says people have been making many more of them this year, because the category is up 31 percent. Music, movies and videos are much more familiar, and much less popular. Sales are down 24 percent, which mirrors what Best Buy (BBY) said about its brick and mortar sales for the same goods earlier this month.
