<p>Say what you will about the status of her effort to turn the company around, but Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz certainly has gumption by the truckload.</p>
<p>Which perhaps is not always such a good thing.</p>
<p>Yesterday, for example, in an <a href="http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/10090449.stm">interview with BBC News</a>, the loquacious exec&#8211;who often uses a dramatic rolling of the eyes to make a point&#8211;slapped at Internet juggernauts Google (GOOG) and Facebook.</p>
<p>Google, posited Bartz, will be in trouble if it was not successful outside of search.</p>
<p>&#8220;Google is going to have a problem because Google is only known for search,&#8221; said Bartz to the BBC. &#8220;It is only half our business; it&#8217;s 99.9 percent of their business. They&#8217;ve got to find other things to do.&#8221;</p>
<p>Yes, other than collecting that Fort Knox of search earnings!</p>
<p>As to Facebook, which is hurtling past Yahoo (YHOO) in pretty much every metric these days, Bartz is here to tell us that it is just not all <em>that</em>.</p>
<p>&#8220;They certainly are taking people&#8217;s attention and time,&#8221; she said. &#8220;But what is kind of wrong about the conversation is that social just means Facebook.&#8221;</p>
<p>Actually, social <em>does</em> mean just Facebook if you&#8217;re comparing the social networking giant to Yahoo.</p>
<p>In any case, these are comments BoomTown has heard Bartz make many times of late, including at a gathering of journalists earlier this year on the occasion of Yahoo&#8217;s 15th birthday.</p>
<p>Also on her hit parade at that event: That it took CEO Steve Jobs many years to turn around Apple (AAPL), and he was &#8220;returning to a company he knew really well.&#8221;</p>
<p>While comparing yourself to the most visionary tech icon in history&#8211;how can I put this delicately&#8211;is insane, in general, all this trash-talk is no big deal and it is a classic way to throw focus off your own problems.</p>
<p>That is, except when it comes to yet another meme Bartz recently trotted out about the continuing exodus of execs from the company.</p>
<p>In Yahoo&#8217;s <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100420/liveblogging-yahoos-first-quarter-earnings">first-quarter earnings call last week</a>, apropos of no question asked, Bartz declared that those who focus too much on Yahoo executive talent, or&#8211;actually&#8211;the departure of executive talent from the company, were &#8220;borderline&#8221; obsessive.</p>
<p>Frankly, Bartz could not be more wrong and there is not nearly enough attention paid to this, since the departures&#8211;which, to be fair, have been an issue well before Bartz arrived&#8211;are simply not typical of the churn you find at any other tech company in Silicon Valley.</p>
<p><img src="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2010/04/brain_drain.jpg" alt="" title="brain_drain" width="260" height="238" class="alignleft size-full wp-image-27894" /></p>
<p>And while some leavings from Yahoo <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100324/hello-goodbye-what-does-talent-exodus-from-internet-companies-like-yahoo-actually-mean">are not a bad thing</a>, the continuous brain drain is perhaps the company&#8217;s most profound dysfunction.</p>
<p>In the last months alone, Yahoo has lost its <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100315/exclusive-yahoos-top-ad-money-maker-bradford-leaving-for-new-job-at-demand-media/">chief advertising sales person</a>, its <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100408/confirmed-yahoo-cto-and-chief-product-officer-balogh-to-leave-company">CTO</a> and several other prominent techies, such as <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100319/yahoos-chief-technologist-sam-pullara-departs-for-benchmark">Chief Technologist Sam Pullara</a>.</p>
<p>And, almost like clockwork, Bryan Lamkin, SVP of the Consumer Products group&#8211;who was <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090424/yahoo-hires-adobe-vet-lamkin-to-run-communications-and-communities-unit-as-dietzen-moves-to-strategy-post">hired by Bartz just one year ago</a>&#8211;said <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20100429/yahoo-loses-another-exec">goodbye</a>.</p>
<p>Sources said was due to clashes with Bartz, as well as the recent <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100419/yahoo-confirms-former-microsoft-exec-blake-irving-hired-as-chief-product-officer/">hiring of former Microsoft (MSFT) exec Blake Irving piece</a> as Chief Product Officer.</p>
<p>Irving&#8217;s arrival is certainly good news for Yahoo, but there simply has to be more of that and soon. Simp;y put, the company needs to show the ever-fickle talent pool inside and outside the company that it means business about innovating and staying relevant.</p>
<p>While Bartz can pooh-pooh this all she likes, as the professional manager brought in by its board to clean up Yahoo, she has but one serious job: The nurturing of its talent to do great things once again.</p>
<p>And while a lot of that talent has already scattered across Silicon Valley&#8211;a lot to Google and Facebook, in fact, as well as to a spate of interesting start-ups&#8211;it&#8217;s Yahoo only hope if it expects to thrive.</p>
<p>While Bartz&#8211;who is clearly someone who knows how to cut costs and restructure&#8211;can talk all she wants about rivals and the need for critics to wait and see, none of that matters unless she can reignite the innovation business at Yahoo.</p>
<p>And innovation only comes through a motivated staff that does not have its eye on the door and the next big thing elsewhere.</p>
<p>In a terrific post this week on his blog on why his venture firm prefers to back companies that have founding CEOs, Andreessen Horowitz partner Ben Horowitz&#8211;a longtime entrepreneur himself&#8211;made a point that applies to any size company in tech:</p>
<p>&#8220;The technology business is fundamentally the innovation business. Etymologically, the word technology means &#8216;a better way of doing things.&#8217; As a result, innovation is the core competency for technology companies. Technology companies are born because they create a better way of doing things. Eventually, someone else will come up with a better way. Therefore, if a technology company ceases to innovate, it will die.&#8221;</p>
<p>So, while Bartz can lecture other companies on a better way to do things&#8211;which, of course, she abhors when such practices are turned on her management of Yahoo&#8211;it&#8217;s pretty much as simple as that.</p>

Bryan Lamkin, SVP, consumer products group, is leaving the company after little more than a year on the job.</p>
<p>“Bryan Lamkin, SVP, Consumer Products Group, has decided to leave Yahoo! to pursue a new entrepreneurial venture,” Yahoo said in a statement. “His last day will be May 28, and he’ll spend the next several weeks focused on ensuring a smooth transition. We wish him all the best in his new endeavors.”</p>
<p>Why is Lamkin bowing out? Sources say he didn&#8217;t get along too well with CEO Carol Bartz. Lamkin, for his part, says it&#8217;s simply time to move on.</p>
<p>“My time at Yahoo! has been extremely valuable and I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished since I started. While on a personal level, the time is now right for me to transition to a new, entrepreneurial-focused venture, I firmly believe that Yahoo! is in a unique position and has the right strategy in place to create an exciting new wave of consumer experiences.”</p>
<p>Lamkin’s departure is the latest in what’s fast becoming an executive exodus at Yahoo. In March Joanne Bradford, the company’s SVP of U.S. Revenue and Market Development, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100315/exclusive-yahoos-top-ad-money-maker-bradford-leaving-for-new-job-at-demand-media/">left for a new gig at Demand Media</a>. A month later <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100408/confirmed-yahoo-cto-and-chief-product-officer-balogh-to-leave-company/">CTO and chief product officer Ari Balogh</a> said he was leaving as well. </p>

<p>The price for the acquisition, which Yahoo (YHOO) did not reveal, was about $20 million, according to sources.</p>
<p>In its blog post, titled &#8220;Xoopit + Yahoo! Mail = Moving beyond that massive digital shoebox,&#8221; Yahoo&#8217;s SVP of Application Products Bryan Lamkin wrote, in part:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>With the integration of Xoopit&#8217;s platform technology and capabilities, the task of sending photos via email will be as easy as it should be and sharing photo albums with friends and family members will also be a cinch. You&#8217;ll be able to share your pictures among a group of friends or family like never before&#8211;combining pictures from numerous sources into a single album for a private group to view. And soon your inbox will become an organized photo index as well. Just imagine having a tool that collects all the photos you&#8217;ve sent and received over the years into that scrapbook you&#8217;ve never had time to assemble.</p>
<p>In short, Xoopit will bring phenomenal photo organization, improved photo sharing, and the serendipity of discovering forgotten photos to Yahoo! Mail.</p>
<p>Why is this such a big deal? Yahoo! Mail is actually home to one of the largest online photo repositories in the world. And every day, millions of you use Yahoo! Mail as your primary way to share the photos of important moments in your lives. While social networks and community sites are great for sharing photos with everyone you know, we realize it&#8217;s not for everyone or every occasion. For many, email is still best for sharing photos among a more select group of friends or family. And now we&#8217;re making it all that much easier for you.</p></blockquote>
<p>Xoopit finds photos, videos, links and other files in email so that users can surface and then share them on many sites, such as social networking giant Facebook. It also has other products that essentially enliven email.</p>
<p>Xoopit&#8217;s investors&#8211;Accel Partners and Foundation Capital, along with several angel investors&#8211;have pumped about $6.5 million into the company since 2006.</p>
<p>As I previously reported, sources said Yahoo was first impressed with its innovative plug-in that works with Gmail from Google (GOOG), and has been looking at the company for a while, previously offering about $10 million for it.</p>
<p>Xoopit also makes a similar photo-sharing application for Yahoo Mail, which it <a href="http://www.xoopit.com/press/20081215-photos-by-xoopit-for-yahoo-mail">launched late last year</a>.</p>
<p>The opening up of its popular email product to a variety of third-party applications in order to make it more robust has been a goal of Yahoo recently as it seeks to socialize one of its most popular products.</p>
<p>Interestingly, in the Yahoo blog, Lamkin said Xoopit was Yahoo Mail&#8217;s most popular third-party app.</p>

<p>One source said Xoopit was a good fit for Yahoo because it allowed the company&#8217;s email to be the platform that could knit together other social networking services, such as Facebook. This is seen as a core feature, although the Silicon Valley-based company is also opening its email products up to outside developers.</p>
<p>Yahoo has been planning on announcing the acquisition on Thursday at Fortune magazine&#8217;s Brainstorm Tech conference, where SVP of Applications Products Bryan Lamkin is appearing on a panel titled, &#8220;Dollars &#038; Demographics: Capitalizing on Demographic Trends.&#8221;</p>
<p>Lamkin, a former Adobe Systems (ADBE) exec, now runs the Yahoo unit that includes email and other communications and communities products. He was <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090424/yahoo-hires-adobe-vet-lamkin-to-run-communications-and-communities-unit-as-dietzen-moves-to-strategy-post/">hired in April by CEO Carol Bartz</a>.</p>
<p>That panel topic is a little ironic, several sources joked, since Xoopit is not profitable and has very small revenues thus far.</p>
<p>The <a href="http://blogs.wsj.com/digits/2009/07/22/yahoo-in-talks-to-acquire-xoopit/">Wall Street Journal also reported on the deal</a>, although it said Yahoo and Xoopit were still in late-stage talks and the deal was not complete yet.</p>
<p>But, according to my sources, it is done.</p>

<p>More musical chairs at Yahoo, which <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090415/stop-me-if-youve-heard-this-one-yahoo-management-and-staff-set-on-shuffle-again/">BoomTown predicted recently</a>, as top execs at the company move in and out of jobs, and new ones from the outside move in.</p>
<p>Perhaps the most important change to occur is the replacement this week of SVP Scott Dietzen&#8211;who has been in charge of all communications and communities products at Yahoo (YHOO)&#8211;by former Adobe Systems (ADBE) exec Bryan Lamkin, several sources said.</p>
<p>Lamkin will become SVP of Applications Products.</p>

<p>According to his <a href="http://www.linkedin.com/pub/dir/bryan/lamkin">profile on LinkedIn</a>, Lamkin (pictured here) was most recently SVP of Creative Solutions, Adobe’s largest business unit, where the software exec &#8220;led product strategy, marketing and product development for Adobe’s flagship software applications, including Photoshop, the Creative Suite, Dreamweaver, Flash and Illustrator.&#8221;</p>
<p>Lamkin, who was at Adobe for 14 years, has more recently been an executive-in-residence at two venture firms, New Enterprise Associates and Sutter Hill Ventures.</p>
<p>He will take over for Dietzen, who came to <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20070917/yahoo-zimbra/">Yahoo in 2007 after its $350 million Zimbra open-source email acquisition</a></p>
<p>Dietzen&#8211;whom sources said is more entrepreneurial than managerial and did not want to lead such a big organization at the Internet giant&#8211;will become VP of strategy in the move. Many said they expect he will eventually leave Yahoo to try his hand at another start-up.</p>
<p>His colleague, Zimbra founder and CEO <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090121/zimbra-founder-satish-dharmaraj-to-depart-yahoo">Satish Dharmaraj, left Yahoo earlier this year</a> to join <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090323/zimbra-founder-and-ex-yahoo-exec-dharmaraj-to-redpoint-ventures">Redpoint Ventures as a VC</a>.</p>
<p>In his job since, Dietzen has been <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20081007/yahoos-scott-dietzen-speaks-about-its-new-online-calendar-which-is-about-a-decade-late">busy fixing Yahoo&#8217;s mail and calendar offerings</a>. (See my video interview with him below from last fall.)</p>
<p>But that&#8217;s not all.</p>
<p>Also afoot is a restructuring of Yahoo&#8217;s North American sales unit, with the unexpected promotion of Mitch Spolan, who was a regional sales exec and will now be in charge of all North American field sales.</p>
<p>The <a href="http://www.paidcontent.org/entry/419-yahoo-centralizes-sales/">paidContent Web site reported the sales changes</a> first, which have been rumored around Yahoo recently.</p>
<p>Spolan jumped over two more senior execs, sources said, who run sales operations for the East and West coasts. One of those execs, Beth Lawrence, will now run Yahoo&#8217;s relations with agencies. Both report to U.S. sales SVP Joanne Bradford.</p>
<p>Over the last 18 months, Yahoo has seen a bleeding of its advertising staff to a wide range of Silicon Valley Web companies, including, most recently, Yahoo’s VP of Sales Operations Dan Foehner to social-networking site Facebook.</p>
<p>Lastly, one of Yahoo&#8217;s most senior communications execs, Brad Williams, was let go as <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090421/yahoo-first-quarter-results-are-as-meh-as-expected-will-cut-five-percent-of-staff-plus-the-full-press-release/">part of its recent round of layoffs</a>. He had been running PR&#8211;admirably and with good cheer, I might add, despite all the bad news&#8211;since its <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090202/yahoo-pr-head-jill-nash-to-depart-the-company">head, Jill Nash, departed earlier this year</a>.</p>
<p>Williams&#8217;s departure was <a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB124061817277555167.html">first reported by The Wall Street Journal</a> tonight. He came to Yahoo in early 2008 from eBay (EBAY).</p>
<p>New marketing head Elisa Steele, who was hired by CEO Carol Bartz, had recently hired a headhunting firm to find a new PR chief, sources said, and Williams was not considered as a candidate for the job.</p>
<p><em><strong>UPDATE</strong>: Yahoo confirmed my report above.</em></p>
<p> A spokesman sent me the following info about Lamkin&#8217;s appointment:</p>
