Skype Working on Android App Flaw That Could Expose Private Info

Skype said on Friday that it is investigating a report that its Android app could leave users’ private information vulnerable if a malicious application is installed on their device. “These files include cached profile information and instant messages,” Skype said in a blog post. “We take your privacy very seriously and are working quickly to protect you from this vulnerability, including securing the file permissions on the Skype for Android application.”

On Tuesday, Facebook discovered a bug: An automated system designed to detect spammers and people with fake accounts spun out of control, and started challenging a wider set of regular users. It disabled some people’s accounts, and asked them send in a copy of their real-world ID. Facebook said the issue only affected a “fraction of a percentage” of the social network’s users, and they fixed it within hours. The company also deleted all the ID information that some people sent in.

Not to be outdone by the Open Sourcerers at Mozilla, Google has raised the bounty it offers to security researchers who report holes in its Chrome browser. The top reward for a single bug is now $3,133.70–$1796 more than it used to be and $133.70 more than the $3,000 fee Mozilla began paying for security bugs last week. Why the odd number? It translates to “elite” in “leet” talk (if you ignore the trailing zero).

Apple has finally acknowledged that a bug in its new Snow Leopard operating system can, on rare occasions, result in a catastrophic loss of data. The glitch, which first surfaced in support forums in early September, is triggered by logging in and out of a guest account and wipes the main user account of all data. Clearly, this is not what Apple meant when it claimed the OS would free up as much as seven gigs of space upon installation.
